Katie Holmes' Daughter Suri Sings 'Blue Moon' Cover in New Movie: 'I Let Her Do Her Thing'

Katie Holmes is endlessly proud of her little girl.

During a discussion about her new film Alone Together , the Dawson's Creek alum, 43, told Yahoo! Entertainment that she wanted "the highest level of talent" for her new film, which is how daughter Suri became involved.

Holmes shares that she asked her 16-year-old daughter to record the cover of "Blue Moon" that appears in the film's opening credits. "I always want the highest level of talent, so I asked her!"

"She's very, very talented. She said she would do it and she recorded it, and I let her do her thing," Holmes — who wrote, directed and stars in the film — says. "That's the way I direct in general: It's like, 'This is what I think we all want — go do your thing.' "

That's not the only project Suri is involved in, either. "She actually did sing in Rare Objects , which is the film we did last fall," Holmes says, referring to the period drama based on the 2016 bestseller by Kathleen Tessaro.

While Suri's having fun participating in her mom's projects, she's not launching a singing career quite yet. "Other than that, she's a 16-year-old kid doing high school," Holmes says, laughing.

Holmes also explains that she and Suri have a special connection to "Blue Moon." Holmes was inspired to write Alone Together , in part, by the 1987 Diane Keaton comedy Baby Boom . Keaton sings "Blue Moon" in the 2014 Rob Reiner film, And So It Goes .

"Diane met my daughter when she was a year old," Holmes tells Yahoo! Entertainment, noting that it made her daughter singing the classic 1934 ballad in her film a full-circle moment for Holmes, a devoted Keaton fan.

In November 2020, Holmes wrote a piece for Vogue Australia's November issue about how the COVID-19 pandemic — which Alone Together focuses on — allowed for more introspection and quality time with her daughter.

"Hobbies such as sewing, painting and writing became new hallmarks of satisfaction and having had time at home to just be. To listen," she wrote at the time. "To live for a moment in time without the pressure of results and instead appreciate the natural rhythms of mother and daughter was the most precious gift ."

The Batman Begins actress went on to recall how she reinforced her mantra to be more present in her daily life during isolation.

"During this time of uncertainty, remembering to be creative and positive has been something I have tried to keep at the forefront of my mind," said Holmes. "Throughout this experience the through-line for me has been a heightened awareness of each moment and really taking it in and appreciating it."

"I always want the highest level of talent, so I asked her," the "Dawson's Creek" actress said of Suri's involvement in the project during a recent interview with Yahoo Entertainment . 

According to Yahoo, the 16-year-old sings a cover of "Blue Moon" that plays at the beginning of the romantic comedy during the opening credits. "Alone Together" follows two people (played by Holmes and costar Jim Sturgess) in failing relationships who end up at the same Airbnb during the coronavirus lockdown.

Suri and Holmes now live together in New York City.

Is Suri Cruise considering a musical career? Not quite, but the daughter of Katie Holmes and Tom Cruise is indeed honing her singing chops with the help of her mom.

In a new interview with Yahoo! Entertainment , Holmes reveals that her 16-year-old daughter recorded a cover of the classic song "Blue Moon" for the opening credits of Holmes' latest film, "Alone Together."

“I always want the highest level of talent, so I asked her! She’s very, very talented,” the 43-year-old explained.

Holmes pulled triple duty for the recently released film, which she wrote, directed and starred in. The proud mom gushed about her daughter's skills and said she gave her plenty of creative space to explore her passion.

“She said she would do it and she recorded it, and I let her do her thing,” she said. “That’s the way I direct in general: It’s like, ‘This is what I think we all want — go do your thing.'"

Holmes, who recently explained why there will not be a reboot of her classic TV show “Dawson’s Creek,” said she and Suri are particularly fond of the song "Blue Moon" for a few reasons. For starters, Diane Keaton's 1987 film "Baby Boom" was one of the influences on "Alone Together," and Keaton happened to cover the song in the 2014 film "And So It Goes."

“Diane met my daughter when she was a year old,” Holmes explained.

The actor is notoriously private and only rarely shares photos of Suri, so her fans might be surprised to hear that the teenager sings in her new film. But as it turns out, this isn’t the first time Suri has contributed to one of her mom's projects.

“She actually did sing in 'Rare Objects,' which is the film we did last fall,” Holmes said. That movie has yet to be released.

Suri clearly has a budding interest in music, but Holmes is very much focused on giving her daughter a normal childhood.

“Other than that, she’s a 16-year-old kid doing high school,” she said with a laugh.

Over the years, Holmes has sporadically shared photos of her daughter. She posted a video of the teenager running and jumping in an empty street in 2020.

The same year, she also shared a photo of the back of Suri's head to celebrate her 14th birthday.

In 2021, the mom posted a few black-and-white throwback photos of her pride and joy as she turned 15.

“Happy 15th Birthday Sweetheart! I love you!!!!!!!!” she captioned the post. “I can’t believe you are already 15!”

Hollywood movie star Katie Holmes is promoting her new film, Alone Together . She stars as the protagonist who shares a house with a stranger ( Jim Sturgess ) with whom she falls for romantically, during the pandemic. It is the second film Holmes has directed. See trailer below.

During a recent interview , Katie confirmed that her 16-year-old daughter Suri Cruise (daughter of Top Gun star Tom Cruise ) sings a cover of the famous 1934 song ‘Blue Moon’ in the opening credits of Alone Together . (Fans will have to watch the film in order to hear Suri singing!)

Katie also confirmed that she was (and continues to be) inspired by Diane Keaton , who sang the song in Rob Reiner’s 2014 film And So It Goes .

Suri Cruise is stepping into the spotlight. In a July 26 interview with Yahoo! Entertainment , Katie Holmes revealed her daughter, Suri, whom she shares with Tom Cruise, sings in the actor's new film, "Alone Together."

"I always want the highest level of talent, so I asked her," Holmes said, sharing that Suri sings a cover of "Blue Moon" that appears in the opening credits of "Alone Together," a movie about two strangers forced to live together during the first weeks of Covid-19 lockdowns. Holmes wrote, directed, and stars in the film. "Blue Moon," originally written by Richard Rodgers and Lorenz Hart in 1934, was famously covered by Diane Keaton in the 2014 movie "And So It Goes," and Holmes added that Suri has a connection to the song because Keaton "met my daughter when she was a year old." It also doesn't hurt that Holmes has long been a fan of the "Baby Boom" actor.

She also revealed that 16-year-old Suri sang in her film "Rare Objects," which came out last fall, and praised her daughter's vocal prowess. "She's very, very talented," Holmes said. "She said she would do it, and she recorded it — and I let her do her thing. That's the way I direct in general: it's like, 'This is what I think we all want — go do your thing.'" Still, she emphasized that Suri still lives an ordinary life despite her Hollywood credentials, adding that "other than that, she's a 16-year-old kid doing high school."

In a July interview with Yahoo! Entertainment , the Dawson's Creek actress opened up about the 16 year old singing in the film she wrote, directed and starred in. According to Katie, Suri's cover of Frank Sinatra 's " Blue Moon " made it in the movie when she was searching for powerful vocals and one name came to mind.

"Well, I always want the highest level of talent, so I asked her," she told the outlet . "She's very talented. She said she would do it and she recorded it, and I let her do her thing. That's the way I direct in general. It's like, 'This is what I think we all want and then go do your thing.'"

Reacting to Suri's singing, it seemed like fans weren't expecting to hear that from her. Many quickly turned to YouTube to share their supportive thoughts.

"Of course Katie Holmes' daughter would be so talented! Good on you, Suri!" one viewer wrote in the comments section. "I cannot stop playing this!! She sounds so wonderful and has so much control in her voice. I'm so impressed," another added. "Wow! She sings soooo well! Way to go! Hope we’ll [hear] more songs from her!" one more fan replied.

Suri Cruise, daughter of Hollywood actors Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes, made her onscreen singing debut in the recent film Alone Together, which Katie wrote, directed, and starred in. Suri, 16, performed a cover of Blue Moon, which plays in the film’s opening credits. In a new interview, Katie discussed her daughter’s musical talents and how she ended up getting involved in her latest film. The romantic drama released in the US on July 22. Suri is the only daughter of Katie and Tom, who was recently seen in the blockbuster Top Gun: Maverick. The couple first met in 2005, and Suri was born in 2006. Later that same year, Tom and Katie married in Italy. However, after five years of marriage, Katie filed for divorce from Tom in 2012. Days later, the couple reached a settlement, which gave Katie primary custody of Suri. The mother-daughter duo lives in New York City.

Katie praised Suri in a new interview with Fox News as she spoke about her daughter’s artistic prowess. “I always want the highest level of talent. So, I asked her. She's very, very talented. She said she would do it, and she recorded it, and I let her do her thing. That's the way I direct in general. It's like, 'This is what I think we all want – go do your thing.'"

Katie clarified that while Suri might be musically-gifted and featured in the soundtrack of her film, she was still a student. She also said this was not be her daughter’s only onscreen singing gig. Katie said, “She actually did sing in Rare Objects, which is the film we did last year. Other than that, she’s a 16-year-old kid doing high school.”

In Alone Together, Katie stars alongside Jim Sturgess. The romantic comedy is set during the Covid-19 pandemic. It follows a man and woman fleeing New York City during the first wave of the pandemic in 2020.

Suri Cruise Makes Her Big-Screen Debut 25 Years After Her Mom Katie Holmes Did

Holmes is one proud mom as her 16-year-old sings "Blue Moon” in Alone Together.

Her long brown hair and gorgeous smile aren’t the only things Katie Holmes and ex Tom Cruise passed down to their lookalike daughter Suri Cruise. The 16-year-old also got a big dose of talent from her famous parents. Recently, Suri officially made her big-screen debut in an appearance in Alone Together , a romantic comedy that Holmes wrote, directed, and starred in. Suri sings “Blue Moon” in the film, which was released 25 years after Holmes made her own feature film debut in Ang Lee’s The Ice Storm. It’s a cool full-circle moment and Holmes couldn’t be prouder of her daughter.

“I always want the highest level of talent," Holmes told Yahoo Entertainment on July 26 about her daughter guest starring in Alone Together. “So I asked her! She's very, very talented. She said she would do it and she recorded it, and I let her do her thing. That's the way I direct in general: It's like, 'This is what I think we all want — go do your thing.'"

Holmes was only a few years older than Suri is now when she appeared in her breakout role as Joey Potter on Dawson’s Creek , which ran for 6 seasons from 1998-2003. She’s since transitioned to a film career, starring in Batman Begins, Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark, and Miss Meadows among others.

Holmes reflected on her first film in 1997. "That shoot was so exciting for me — it was my first job," she told Yahoo. "When I was there, I didn't really understand what was happening, but in looking at the film many times after, Ang's ability to capture worlds is so incredible. I think that he's such a poet in the way that he shoots a scene, and the dialogue he uses and how that tells the story in a very simple way. It's all about finding the simplest way to get your story across."

Now, Holmes is telling her own stories, and she loves having her daughter work with her. Later this year, Suri’s voice will appear in another one of Holmes’ movies.

"She actually did sing in Rare Objects , which is the film we did last fall," says Holmes of her third feature, a period drama based on the 2016 bestseller by Kathleen Tessaro that will be released on December 31, 2022.

"Other than that, she's a 16-year-old kid doing high school," Holmes added.

The song is not only Suri’s film debut, but the story behind it has a special meaning. Alone Together was in part inspired the 1987 comedy Baby Boom, which starred Diane Keaton. “Diane met my daughter when she was a year old," Holmes told Yahoo Entertainment of Keaton, who sang “Blue Moon” in the 2014 Rob Reiner film And So It Goes.

Holmes’ creative nature likely influenced Suri’s spark for singing and acting. In December 2021, Holmes told Romper , “I like spending time with people way more than worrying about gifts and things,” about her holiday traditions. “The arts and crafts and the good food… that's what I love doing during the holidays and just making it very creative.”

In an interview with Yahoo Entertainment , Holmes discussed her daughter’s musical talents and how she ended up involved in her film, “ Alone Together ,” which Holmes wrote, directed, and starred in.

“I always want the highest level of talent,“ said Holmes. ”So I asked her! She’s very, very talented. She said she would do it and she recorded it, and I let her do her thing. That’s the way I direct in general: It’s like, ‘This is what I think we all want — go do your thing.’“ And while Cruise is musically gifted and will be featured in the soundtrack of Holmes’ upcoming film, Holmes makes it clear that her daughter is still a student. “She actually did sing in ‘ Rare Objects ,’ which is the film we did last fall,” she said. “Other than that, she’s a 16-year-old kid doing high school.”

Holmes also discussed why the song “Blue Moon,” explaining that it’s featured in “ Baby Boom ” a movie starring Diane Keaton that’s one of the inspirations behind her own film. “Diane met my daughter when she was a year old,” Holmes shared.

“Alone Together” is Holmes’ latest film, following a love story between two people who end up quarantined in the same Airbnb during the start of the pandemic. “It feels very satisfying. It’s my second film that I directed and I feel like I learn every single time. And with this, I have a special sense of pride because it’s all of our film and there was so much collaboration,” she said of the experience in an interview with Reuters .

“Alone Together” is currently screening in select theaters and will be available to stream starting July 29th.

WASHINGTON: Hollywood stars Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes' daughter, Suri Cruise, made her on-screen singing debut with the newly released movie 'Alone Together', which has been directed by her mother.

According to Fox News, in an interview with an entertainment news outlet, Holmes said, "I always want the highest level of talent. So, I asked her. She's very, very talented. She said she would do it, and she recorded it, and I let her do her thing. That's the way I direct in general. It's like, 'This is what I think we all want -- go do your thing.'"

In 'Alone Together', Suri has sung a cover of 'Blue Moon', which plays during the opening credits of the film. Holmes told the outlet this will not be her daughter's only on-screen singing gig.

"She actually did sing in 'Rare Objects,' which is the film we did last fall. Other than that, she's a 16-year-old kid doing high school," Holmes explained.

Cruise and Holmes were married from 2006 to 2012. Suri is their only child together, and Suri's parents opted to keep her out of the public eye for the majority of her childhood, reported Fox News.

A romantic comedy set during the coronavirus pandemic, 'Alone Together' has been written and directed by Holmes, also starring Jim Sturgess.

The movie follows a man and woman fleeing New York City during the first wave of the pandemic in 2020. The duo ends up booking the same Airbnb and ultimately decide to stay at the upstate property together.

As per Fox News, Sturgess praised Holmes' directing style and shared that she gives actors wide latitude when they are in front of the camera. "She gives you this incredible space between action and cut," Sturgess said of his co-star.

He added, "She very rarely shouted, 'Cut!' actually. You'd think the scene had ended and she just kind of left it hanging. I love that she was always searching for those little nuggets of authenticity." (ANI)

She kept it casual for the midday stroll, wearing gray sweatpants, a T-shirt, a navy blue jacket and brown flats.

Suri went makeup-free for the outing as she tied her hair up in a ponytail and accessorized with drop earrings.

It’s unclear where the teenager was off to, but she held on to a pink water bottle as wired headphones hung out of her pocket.

The brunette beauty is occasionally seen wandering around the Big Apple , often out on errands.

A few months before, the two made another rare appearance together as they celebrated the “Dawson’s Creek” alum’s 45th birthday in the city.

In 2019, the “Batman Begins” actress gushed over her mini-me in an interview with Shape magazine, revealing they like to work out together.

“I feel very blessed to have such a special daughter. Being her mom is absolutely the greatest gift and privilege,” she told the outlet. “Sometimes I work out with my daughter. It just depends on the day.”

Last year, Holmes also shared she’s always been protective of her daughter “because she was so visible at a young age” due to her and Cruise’s fame, per Glamour.

However, Suri is rumored not to hold the same bond with her father amid reports she’s been estranged from the “Top Gun” actor , 61, since his 2012 divorce from Holmes.

The “First Daughter” star and Cruise welcomed their daughter in April 2006 and wed a few months after her birth.

The last person the actress was romantically connected to was musician in Bobby Wooten III from April 2022 until December 2022 .

Meanwhile, the “Mission Impossible” star was dating Russian socialite Elsina Khayrova , but cooled off a little bit after an insider claimed Cruise “felt things were moving too fast.”
