When someone visits Indian Motor Works for the first time, “jaw dropping” is usually a phrase thrown around. Everything from the easy music, the original signs, memorabilia and character of the building takes you on a nostalgia trip through time. The IMW shop was designed and built for efficiency. Complete with full access to hand and machine tools, a full and balanced inventory of Indian parts and a relaxed aesthetic appeal not often found in machine shops. Outfitted extensively with hand tools, jigs, dies, and fixtures, and full welding and fabrication equipment all nestled in a hospital like setting. With all the tools left in their place and the clean atmosphere, it has been said on more than one occasion, “you could eat off the floor.”

One can sense the workflow of the machinists, the different processes feeding one into the next, moving from one work station to another as parts are refined, repaired and restored… The aroma of seasoned oil and grease mixed with the lingering notes of metal dust tell of the hours and hours of dedication and passionate work that takes place in this shop. On the main floor, an impressive line of restored, refurbished and a few unrestored originals sit ready to turn the key and go. Walking deeper into the back halls of the shop, the extent of the IMW inventory is realized. Isles and isles of original Indian parts, all inventoried and archived in labeled bins, cabinets and racks sit ready and waiting to be installed on the right machine. The library-like nature of the inventory conveys both the dedication and meticulous nature the IMW team applies to their projects.

When left to explore the shop one quickly realizes every wall, beam and nook is filled with Indian history and memorabilia. An original neon sign hangs like a mast over the assembly floor, colorful racing posters and vintage oil cans hang on the walls amongst other vintage Indian memorabilia… The collective effect and museum like atmosphere of the shop moves one back through time… through the decades, following an amazingly innovative company and their journey at the forefront of the motorcycle scene. Mixed in with the countless signs and memorabilia are pictures of past customers and old friends on their Indians. The smiling faces always standing next to a motorcycle tell of IMW’s dedication to their craft and the hundreds of satisfied customers that have come through the shop.

Get a behind-the-scenes look at Charlotte Motor Speedway, The Dirt Track and zMAX Dragway! Learn the illustrious history of each track while taking in the sights and sounds of Americas Home for Racing! 

Check out our special race week tours that can take you behind the scenes of some of the most famous race teams ever or show you what the speedway looks like when it gets ready to host a NASCAR race weekend. 

Daily Tours

Fast pass tour.

ALL-NEW Fast Pass Tour puts you behind the wheel of your own vehicle taking in the sights and history of Charlotte Motor Speedway! This touchless tour keeps you and your family safe while still having an unbelievable experience. Our tour guides will lead you through an hour-long tour using your vehicle's radio.  We will meet you in the Fan Zone by the Charlotte Motor Speedway marquee, to start the tour. Tours operate rain or shine.

Price:  $50.00 per vehicle

*All tour participants under 18 years old must print, sign and bring the Parental Consent, Release and Waiver of Liability Assumption of Risk, and Indemnity Agreement.

Fast Pass Tours are open with limited availability, Monday - Friday, with our one-hour tours at 12 p.m. In keeping with guidelines set by state/local health guidelines, you will remain in the comfort and safety of your personal vehicle and tune in via your vehicle's radio to listen to your tour guide. A tour guide will lead you on an exciting tour around our facility, as you follow. During the hour-long tour, you will learn the history about the track, take a drive by the NASCAR garages, pass by the media center and view the second largest HD TV screen.  You will be able to enjoy a ride on the apron around the 1.5 mile superspeedway and a pass through Winners Circle where you will have your photo taken of you while in your car!  We will meet you in the Fan Zone by the Charlotte Motor Speedway marquee, to start the tour. Tours operate rain or shine.

Price: $50.00 per vehicle

Visit the NASCAR Cup Series garage area and take a ride through two infield race tracks. After you make your way down Pit Road, stop in Winner’s Circle for a photo opportunity. Learn the history of Charlotte Motor Speedway while enjoying a comfortable van ride around the Superspeedway where you will feel the full-tilt force of the 24-degree banking. Plus, visit zMAX Dragway and The Dirt Track at Charlotte on this exciting tour!  Reserve your seat by calling 704-455-3223 or visit the Tour Desk on the second floor of Smith Tower.

STEAM Field Trip Opportunities

Our STEAM Program offers various educational experiences for students of all ages. Fun and education come together in all of our options from the Daily program to Special Event days. Kids will engage in the principles of STEAM relating to Motorsports. Programs last approximately 3 hours. Click below for more details!

School groups may choose from one of the following options:

Option A Students will rotate through 3 interactive STEAM stations focusing on force and motion, traction and friction and speed and acceleration. Each station lasts approximately 25 minutes.

Option B Students will collaborate in teams to engineer, test and race a car. Teams will choose from various materials for the design in this 90 minute session.

Infield Experience Tour

Experience the breathtaking view of Charlotte Motor Speedway from a 14-passenger van ride around the inside and outside of our NASCAR infield (no on-track access). Cruise around the NASCAR garages and stroll through the winner's circle with an opportunity to take photos. Tour the media center and take a walk down memory lane as you view timeless photos of CMS history.

(You will not be able to pass the tour guide's vehicle or exceed 70 mph).

18+ for insurance, valid driver’s license, no convertibles. Seatbelts required.

My wife & I recently had the need to book a bus to transport our guests to a wedding. She had worked with Rene to make the arrangements and couldn't have been easier were both very pleased how everything worked out. We did have a last minute request by the venue that we get a certificate of insurance and Rene & team came thru providing the necessary documents quickly. Our driver Ed was fantastic, very friendly and helpful. If we ever have the need to book something similar we wouldn't hesitate to go with RC again.

We were 110% satisfied with our experience. Our driver, Paul was a true professional. He offered up his extensive knowledge of Yosemite and San Francisco to make our trip better. He even suggested places I could get a vegan meal! The students enjoyed his lively banter and his insights on the area. The bus was clean and beautifully maintained. Kristine a Royal is top notch. Polite, thoughtful and a complete professional in the review of and selection of coach process. Paperwork a breeze. Communication outstanding. On to the driver, Jim. Can't say enough good things about this gentleman, period. He is, hands down, a complete gentleman and professional bus driver. Hard working he is and only after two things...his client's safety and complete enjoyment of the experience. Right on the mark, Jim, as you carried us to and from Napa for a great day and evening. I can't wait to book another event with Royal. I recommend them highly and without reservation as do our 20 or so San Jose-based friends. An awesome time and the only way to go!

I love love love Royal Coach! I have used their services and buses for over a decade now for transportation to wineries and other events. The staff is on top of it, personable and efficient. And the drivers have all been safe with sweet personalities too. I recommend them with two huge thumbs up!

I use Royal Coach as my go-to for groups for senior trips. They are responsive to my quote requests, usually on the same day or by the next day. Their rates, if using locally, are competitive to other motor coach companies around. Buses are clean, comfortable, and they have the best drivers around.

Had a great experience working with Royal Coach Tours. Justin was extremely responsive to all my questions. Bus was comfortable and I can't say enough about our driver JR. He was fabulous - great driver, cool guy and really made our trip to Tahoe! Company was a bit picky about making any changes to itinerary but other than that, it was all good. Would definitely use them again, especially if we could request JR!

From The Rodder’s Journal Vault: Photos From The Fremont Nostalgia Drags Circa 1986!

(Photos by Steve Coonan) –  A first for Bangshift – the guys over at The Rodder’s Journal supplied us with a file of old photos taken at Baylands Raceway in Fremont, California, back in 1986. Steve Coonan (Publisher of The Rodder’s Journal ) would drive to Fremont in his old Deuce highboy roadster to shoot photos on a freelance basis back in those days. Some of these photos were published in American Rodder before Steve created The Rodder’s Journal . What we find remarkable about the event – a quarter of a century later is just how many famous cars were actually making full passes down the quarter-mile. Steve said “I remember the Fremont Nostalgia Drags being a whole lot of fun, but looking at the list of famous cars that were there and racing seems truly remarkable today.”

Just a quick look through an old stack of 8×10 black & white prints showed Art Chrisman making a 170+ mph pass in the “Hustler”, the old Mooneyham & Sharp “554” ’34 coupe smoking the tires the length of the track along with the Glass Slipper dragster, the Stone, Woods & Cook Willys, the “Pure Heaven” Fuel Altered and even Chrisman’s #25 dragster in action. This was also at the peak of the rivalry between “Fat Jack” Robinson’s ’46 Ford coupe and Jerry Moreland’s ’40 Ford sedan. Even Pat Ganahl was on hand and racing his “Low Buck Special” Hemi-powered Altered.

The event was officially titled the “6th Annual Nostalgia Nationals” and was put on by the Nostalgia Drag Racing Association. The NDRA was the brainchild of Nor-Cal hot rodders Tom Prufer and Brian Burnett. It was truly a treat to see this group of cars smoke the tires down the drag strip.

Chrisman Hustler

Art Chrisman made several fully smoked-in passes in the original, but freshly restored Hustler dragster at Fremont the first weekend in May back in 1986.

Pure Heaven Altered

Bob Nylander faithfully restored and campaigned the Leon Fitzgerald’s Pure Heaven back in the ‘80s. The Fuel Altered was powered by a blown big block Chevy.

Both Tom Prufer and Brian Burnett, promoters of the event, ran cars that weekend at Fremont. Tom was on hand with one of his “Power King” dragsters, while Brian was running the freshly restored 554 coupe. Both Brian and Tom are still active in the sport. Prufer has moved to Texas, while Burnett now calls east coast home.

Mike Cook has been racing his father’s famed Stone, Woods and Cook Willys since the 1970s. It ran at OCIR with a tunnel rammed big block Chevy. By the 1980s he had restored it to its original blown-Hemi AA/GS configuration. Mike still owns the car and his dad’s ’37 Chevy coupe today.

Glass Slipper

The Glass Slipper was one of the prettiest dragsters of the 1950s. Ed Cortopossi was still at the controls in the mid-‘80s when it was hazing the slicks to half-rack at Fremont. It used an injected smallblock Chevy on alcohol.

Low Buck Special

Pat Ganahl along with Bob McCray and Gene Adams teamed up to run the Nostalgia Drags back in the ‘80s. First with this Altered and then with an injected dragster. The stroked 354 Hemi powered the fiberglass T-bodied roadster to 9-second times. We believe that is Bob McCray driving.

Fiat Fuel Coupe

The Mews and Poncia Fiat-cloaked dragster was a regular at nostalgia meets of the era. It originally ran at Half Moon Bay back in the ‘60s. The supercharged Hemi provided more than enough horsepower to smoke the tires the full length of the strip. These weren’t burnouts, but full-power runs.

Fat Jack and Jerry Moreland

Fat Jack and Jerry Moreland were at the forefront of the rivalry for Super Street bragging rights. Both were powered by blown big block Chevys. Moreland’s efforts were spearheaded by Bob Bauder, while George Striegel (owner of Clay Smith) supplied the alcohol-burning rat motor used in Fat Jack’s ’46 Ford coupe. This weekend, however, both succumbed to mechanical difficulties. Cole Cutler won the class with his Boss 429 motivated ’34 Ford coupe.

I was there too but its was 1985 wasnt it ?

I remember when Fat Jack rolled that ’46 into a cube….with round corners – wasn’t that think all steel & running in the 9’s???

bolt-in cage that NHRA wouldn’t certify. It was running 8s. Both of those cars were on my wall as a kid as was Cole’s ’34.

same here with the pics – l remember Cole built a 2nd, less street, type of car. didnt something happen to Cole too?

All steel for sure. Times? I don’t remember, but I was there.
