2022 Honda NT1100 review | Like a sports-touring Africa Twin for the road

A side view of the Honda NT1100

  • New Africa Twin-based tourer
  • Easy to get on with
  • Supremely comfortable

At a glance

Overall rating.

Put simply the new Honda NT1100 is a low-ride, sports-tourer version of the Africa Twin with new bodywork and road-going 17in wheels.

Designed to be friendly, easy-going and comfortable, Honda talk about it in the same breath as the old Deauville and Pan European. It has a whiff of CBF1000 about it in the flesh, too.

It’s a hugely competent tourer - soft, friendly, comfortable, well-built and generously equipped. It takes the spacious, upright stance of the Africa Twin and mixes it with more road focussed handling and a low seat to help shorter riders feel more comfortable.

Riding the Honda NT1100 on the road

Power delivery is spritely, if not outright sporty and although the DCT gearbox works well enough, we’d go for the manual version and save a grand.

It’s stable, light steering and its tyres are excellent in the wet. It may be too sensible for some and the screen can be noisy, but it’s a great value all-rounder.

Ride quality & brakes

To ride the NT1100 feels more like a softer, cuddlier version of the tall-rounder style sports-tourers (think tame Yamaha Tracer 9 GT ) rather than the Suzuki GSX-S1000GT style bikes that’ve grabbed headlines lately.

It’s a tourer through and through, but doesn’t have the muscle, or playfulness of bikes like the Kawasaki Ninja 1000SX .

Based on the Africa Twin the NT1100 is unsurprisingly spacious (the riding position is canted forward 10 degrees from its adventure sibling) and the seat is so comfy there’s neither a leg stretch or bum-shuffle during our day’s riding at the Honda’s world launch near Barcelona.

A front view of the Honda NT1100

We don’t have a friendly pillion on hand, but their pegs are nice and low, too and the 60mm back seat looks just as plush.

There’s plenty of weather protection, which is handy in today’s rain and the lower wind deflectors do a great job to keep the spray off your feet. You should also be able find one of the five screen positions to suit you, but the mechanism is too stiff to adjust on the move (it pulls up and down by hand).

Buffeting can also be quite loud when it’s windy and if that puts you off, a more road bike-shaped tourer with a raked screen will be much quieter. The left switchgear block is a messy mass of buttons, too, which are fiddly to find, especially wearing thick gloves.

Exploring tight turns on the Honda NT1100

Although the frame is the same as the Africa Twin’s, the NT1100 has a new swingarm, slightly sportier steering geometry and shorter travel suspension. It weighs a not insignificant 248kg in DCT trim (the manual version is 10kg lighter), but the Honda carries its weight well.

It’s stable at high speed and although softly sprung, is nicely balanced in the bends, nimble around town and when it’s time to stop, low enough to get your feet flat on the floor.

We never see dry tarmac during our test, but it gives the standard Metzeler Roadtec 01 sports touring tyres a chance to show off their immense wet grip – so much so, the traction control and ABS never make an appearance. Braking feel and power in the conditions are top notch, too.

With tweaks to the mapping, longer intake ducts and a new exhaust can the 101bhp 1084cc SOHC eight valve parallel-twin engine’s power has been smoothed-off to suit its new life on the tarmac.

It has a smooth spread of power, a gusty exhaust note and purrs along at 70mph at 4000rpm in top. But this is a bike designed to waft, so if you’re after a slightly less sensible tourer, the NT1100 may not be the bike for you, but then you’d probably guessed that already.

After our 150-mile test we fill up with one bar showing on the fuel gauge. You could probably eek out more, but probably not as much as the 250 miles Honda claim.

Honda NT1100 parallel-twin engine

On the face of it, a semi-automatic touring bike sounds perfect and indeed it adds to the NT’s friendliness when you’re cruising or around town. But the DCT often won’t change down enough gears into slow corners (giving a slightly unnerving freewheeling feeling) or for swift overtakes and can be clunky at low speed.

You can use the DCT as a 'flappy paddle' manual, but it’s synthetic feeling and isn’t as engaging as the real thing. We’d save money and weight and go for the manual version.

Reliability & build quality

Honda reliability is never in question and the Africa Twin it’s based on has had no major faults, but paint finishes around the frame on a handful of bikes (including MCN’s 2020 long termer) have been below par and caused rust problems.

Only time will tell how the NT1100 will survive a winter, but from new it appears robust and well finished.

Value vs rivals

In base trim the NT1100 isn’t exactly loose change, but it’s similarly priced to close rivals like the Yamaha Tracer 9 GT, BMW F900XR TE and Kawasaki Versys 1000 Tourer.

The Yamaha is the most charismatic and lively of the bunch with its inline-triple CP3 engine. The BMW is more sensible but still more exciting than the Kawasaki or the NT1100. That's not to say that the NT is necessarily boring, though.

But the Honda comes with the best array of standard issue touring goodies and electronics for the price. Office Manager Ali Silcox rode an NT1100 on the MCN long-term test fleet in 2022 and did the sums on what it would cost to own one. You can read the full breakdown and see her working out but the final figure was 31p per mile.

Styling and colours (grey, black, white) might be typically conservative, but the NT’s sparkle comes from what you get for your money: cruise control, a centre stand, two chargers (USB and ACC), five stage heated grips, five rider modes (three pre-set and two custom), combined three-way adjustable torque and wheelie control, ABS, LED lights, self-cancelling indicators and remote preload adjuster.

It also gets a manually adjustable, five position screen that raises by 164mm and its angle straightens the higher it goes. Hands and feet get extra wind deflectors.

65 litre panniers (33 litres left, 32 right) are standard, but not deep enough to take a full-face helmet. 50 or 38 litre accessory top boxes are also available.

Honda NT1100 TFT dash

A multi-function 6.5in colour TFT touch screen from the Africa Twin has three layouts, Apple Car Play and Android Auto. Extra LCD display seems pointless.

If that wasn’t enough, Honda also have a full range of NT1100 accessories including Urban, Tour and Voyage Packs. Keyless ignition and electronic suspension are conspicuous by their absence, but that would no doubt push up the price.

Despite its generous level of spec and excellent build quality, it’s still a lot of money, but times have sadly changed and it’s more palatable with a PCP deal.

Review your HONDA NT1100 (2022 - on)

Version: Manual with quick shifter

Typical Honda does what it says on the tin Excellent bike would give it 5 stars if the fuelling was slightly better although this has improved since its service Being vertically challenged the seat would be better for me if it was an inch (25mm) lower Typical motorcycle horn next to useless why can’t Honda fit the same horn as fitted to the Goldwing. Niggles over now the best bits It is the most comfortable bike I have ridden I did add the comfort seat after I was lent bike with one fitted when mine went for its 600 mile service and would recommend (shop on line I got both front & rear seat for the recommended price of the front from a Honda franchised dealer) Quick shifter is very good The 5 rider modes are great Average MPG is 59 and I get over 200m a tank Screen is excellent and I can ride at motorway speeds with my visor up I found I can knock the screen down when riding if gets too warm but you do need to stop and use both hands to raise it The little wings by the screen work well to keep the wind from your hands Luggage is slim enough that you can still filter in traffic and the optional top box is worth the money Lights are excellent Looks good with and without the luggage fitted From the front it can be a bit Marmite but I like it The left hand switch gear looks complicated with the large number of buttons but is very intuitive and only takes approximately 10mins to learn the twin screens are a good feature allowing the top touch screen to be used as a sat nav or media info. The bottom slim screen give the required info of speed gear etc

Ride and brakes are excellent Although a heavy bike, once on the move the balance is good and it feels very light Handling is typical Honda neutral and gives great confidence. Braking is good and has one of the best rear brakes I have used (I would have preferred it to have linked brakes) I use It for commuting and ride outs with with friends. I would not call it a sports tourer but an excellent long distance tourer and I have not felt any fatigue after a full days ride

Engine is well proven being from the Africa Twin The pull from low down revs is very good and you do need to keep an eye on you speed Engine braking is excellent You hear moans about its HP but real world rinding it is plenty even with full luggage Optional quick shifters is very smooth Having the 5 rider modes with 2 you set up is a nice touch and adjustable traction control As a whole the power delivery is smooth The only niggle is it’s very jerky in slow town traffic switching to a rider mode with everything dialled down helps and it has improved since it’s service at 4500miles

Typical Honda build and ultra reliable The engine is well proven being from the Africa twin I have had a few stone chips at the bottom of the down tube and marks on the radiator. I have now fitted a fender extender and radiator guard I would call it a great all rounder does everything you ask of it

Have a Honda service plan given by dealer

Centre stand, panniers with inner bags, heated grips, cruise control, rider modes, adjustable traction control, USB & 12v sockets & Apple/Android make it good value I have fitted the following Quickshifter Comfort seat Top box Fog lights Scorpion tracker (Honda gave away free just paid for fitting) These are available in different Honda Packs I purchased them separately so did not get the inner bag for the top box I’m still running with the OEM RoadSmart tyres which are lasting well now nearly 5000miles I have been informed the Michelin road pilots are good tyre to change to

Buying experience: The buying experience from my dealership was a bit disappointing to start with None of the accessories had arrived on my collection date but I was not informed The 600 mile service and accessories fitted was a disaster, I had the email with the date and duly turned up to find they forgot to log it in workshop so I had to re book On the plus point they did not 40% off the cost of the accessories I had ordered and gave me the Honda service plan for free

Annual servicing cost: £350

Just a bit disappointing really

Not great in the wet - brakes are a bit "grabby" I can last about 2 hours max in the saddle (compared to 3+ on my triumph trophy)

It's honda bulletproof. But don't expect huge amounts of grunt - it is a good balance though. But - and it's a big but for me - riding at city speeds (40mph or lower) is almost impossible - the bike becomes totally skittish and the only way to combat that is by constantly balancing the clutch - even in urban mode

Much of it feels like a Honda and it's not missed a beat (the engine is great) - but cables visible due to short housing, very flexible screens and a rock hard saddle really let it down

Heated grips are great and bluetooth is fab - but the controls aren't easy to find - I've lost count of how many times I've hit the horn by mistake.

Version: DCT

So easy to ride, typical Honda quality build. DCT gear box takes a bit of getting used to. Using in standard Drive mode isn’t brilliant defiantly work to do in the software but slip it into S2 and you’ll enjoy the ride.

Annual servicing cost: £250

If it’s going to be the go to tourer then improved suspension is a must.

Soft suspension, great for touring but needs firming up when you pick up the pace.

Solid and plenty of torque

Typical Honda

Reasonable price level. Well on par with rivals.

Fantastic to have Apple Car Play.

Buying experience: Honda dealer in Gothenburg. Great service

Follow Us On:

24YM HONDA NT1100

Introduced in 2022 it’s designed to draw those with a long memory of similar Honda machines of the past, but also attract a much younger rider. Employing the frame and characterful twin-cylinder engine of the CRF1100L Africa Twin as a base, engaging performance is assured. But the NT1100 is also packed with features and technology that build and broaden any motorcycle’s appeal. With this combination of performance and rich specification, it’s no surprise that the NT1100 was Europe’s most popular Touring bike in 2023 so far, with nearly 12,000 models sold since its introduction.

Sleek, subtle styling delivers efficient aerodynamic performance with a riding position tailored for touring. Screen height and angle are 5-way adjustable and upper and lower wind deflectors also work to protect the rider. A 6.5-inch TFT touch screen provides full colour, customisable displays and offers Apple CarPlay® and Android Auto® connectivity. Cruise control, heated grips and sizable integrated panniers are standard equipment. A centre stand is also standard fit.

The NT1100’s steel semi-double cradle frame employs a relatively short wheelbase and sharp steering geometry while suspension is via 43mm Showa cartridge-type inverted front forks and single-tube rear shock. Rear spring preload adjusts hydraulically. Dual 310mm front discs are paired with 4-piston radial-mount calipers; tyres are sized 120/70-17 front and 180/55-17 rear.

It also features full-fat performance from the twin-cylinder engine (inherited from the Africa Twin) but with intake and exhaust tuned for super-smooth acceleration and a pleasing low-rpm sound. The performance does not come to the detriment of fuel economy: the engine’s efficiency allows a 400km range from the 20L fuel tank.

The electronic package includes 3-level Honda Selectable Torque Control (HSTC), Wheelie Control, full LED lights, self-cancelling indicators and Emergency Stop Signals. And, finding a natural home in the NT11000, Honda’s six-speed Dual Clutch Transmission (DCT) is an option.

For 24YM, the NT1100 will be available in the following colour options:

**NEW** Matt Jeans Blue Metallic with Matt Ballistic Black Metallic rear carrier

**NEW** Candy Chromosphere Red with Matt Ballistic Black Metallic rear carrier

Matt Iridium Gray Metallic with **NEW** Matt Ballistic Black Metallic rear carrier

Sleek styling offers excellent aerodynamic performance 5-stage screen height and angle adjustment plus upper/lower wind deflectors Panniers standard equipment, as are heated grips and cruise control 5-inch TFT touch screen includes Apple CarPlay®, Android Auto® and Bluetooth connectivity USB socket, centre stand and ACC socket as standard

The NT1100 has been designed, from the outset, as a sporting, agile bike but one that’s also enjoyable to ride all day with efficient, protective aerodynamics and easy-going ergonomics centred around rider comfort. Styling is subtly sophisticated with straightforward surfaces that emphasise key character lines. Dynamic elegance front to back are the defining features of the design language of the NT1100. And of course, this motorcycle’s sleek form is also about function – aimed to elevate the quality of the riding experience.

Fitted as standard, upper and lower deflectors provide wind and weather protection around arms and lower body. The screen offers 5-stage adjustment for height and angle through a total 164mm between the high/low position. Set low, it sends air around the shoulders; set high it moves air over the rider’s helmet. Heated grips are standard equipment, as is cruise control. The rider integrates into the machine neatly, enveloped by the protection offered by the fairing. A wide, thick seat material offers a luxurious expanse for two; seat height is set at 820mm. A large grabrail for the passenger extends from the rear rack. The exhaust muffler too is set low to maximise pannier volume. And it’s the standard-fit, detachable panniers that are one of the NT1100’s key features. Deliberately designed to be as slim as possible for around-town riding they are just 901mm across at their widest point. Pannier volume is at 33L left and 32L right.

Bright and easy to read, the 6.5-inch TFT touch screen offers 3 choices of screen display; GOLD shows all numeric and mode information. SILVER centres on the speedometer and rev-counter, BRONZE on the rev-counter. The background colour has a default setting plus the choice of black or white. Apple CarPlay®, Android Auto® and Bluetooth connectivity allows access to smartphone functions via the TFT display. The premium specification is rounded out by full LED lights – with Daytime Running Lights (DRL) – self-cancelling indicators and Emergency Stop Signals; practicality is further elevated by USB socket, centre stand and ACC socket as standard.

CRF1100L steel semi-double cradle frame and bolt-on aluminium subframe Sharp steering geometry and high spec suspension front and rear Showa 43mm inverted front forks and rear shock with hydraulic preload adjustment Dual 310mm front discs and 4-piston radial-mount calipers

The NT1100’s underpinnings are well-proven and tough – the Africa Twin CRF1100L’s steel semi-double cradle frame and bolt-on aluminium subframe. To suit the all-round, sporting purpose of the NT1100, the off-road ready suspension of its sibling has been replaced by road-focused equipment matched to sharper steering geometry. The 43mm Showa cartridge-type inverted front forks feature 150mm travel and are preload adjustable. Like the forks, the single-tube pressurised Showa rear shock offers 150mm axle travel; it uses a 14mm diameter rod. To make carrying a pillion and/or luggage easier spring preload adjusts hydraulically, and remotely. The wheels are aluminium, fine die-cast with a sand core allowing a hollow hub centre for the front. An intersecting spoke design (with the spokes attaching to the rim diagonally) offers several benefits: it smooths road vibration in a straight line and offers high rigidity for cornering. Tyres are sized 120/70-17 front and 180/55-17 rear. Wheelbase is set at 1535mm, with rake and trail of 26.5°/108mm and 175mm ground clearance. Kerb weight for the NT1100 with manual transmission is 238kg, 248kg with DCT. Dual 310mm front discs are squeezed by lightweight, 4-piston radial-mount calipers. The rear 256mm disc uses a 1-piston caliper. All braking is ABS-controlled.

1,084cc SOHC 8-valve parallel twin-cylinder engine Power and torque output of 75kW/104Nm Intake and exhaust tuned to deliver smooth, powerful acceleration and pleasing low-rpm ‘throb’

The 1,084cc SOHC 8-valve parallel twin-cylinder engine is the well-proven unit from the CRF1100L Africa Twin, with peak power of 75kW @ 7,250rpm and 104Nm @ 6,250rpm peak torque. Compression ratio is identical at 10.1:1. Another shared feature is the 270° phased crankshaft and uneven firing interval. Throttle By Wire (TBW) provides engine management and PGM-FI feeds the throttle bodies. Where the engine tune differs to the Africa Twin – and immediately noticeable to the rider – are the optimisation of both air intake duct length and muffler internals to produce a pleasing, low-rpm ‘throb’ and smooth, powerful acceleration married to relaxed highway cruising – perfect for the wide-ranging duties the NT1100 is built for.

The crankcases are split horizontally, and the water pump is housed within the clutch casing with a thermostat integrated into the cylinder head. Manual and DCT versions of the engine share common crankcases with only minor external differences. Secondary vibrations are neutralised by the mutually reciprocating motion of the pistons, while primary inertial and coupling vibrations are cancelled by the use of biaxial balance shafts. The water and oil pumps are driven by the balancer shafts.

A crank pulsar – with relator teeth spaced at 10° intervals – manages misfire detection, important for OBD2/EURO5 compliance. In addition, Linear Air Flow (LAF) sensors in the downpipes give accurate measurement of the air/fuel mixture ratio.

3 default riding modes to choose from, plus two customisable USER modes 3-level Honda Selectable Torque Control 3-level Wheelie Control

24YM HONDA NT1100

TBW manages engine performance and character, plus Honda Selectable Torque Control (HSTC) and Wheelie Control. There are 3 pre-set modes for the rider to choose covering a wide variety of riding conditions and 3 levels of management for Power and Engine Braking, with level 1 delivering the maximum of either parameter. For HSTC and Wheelie Control level 3 provides the highest intervention. Mode selection is managed from the left-hand switchgear; an indicator in the instrument display activates when HSTC is working. URBAN is standard and offers an all-round middle setting of engine power and engine braking.RAIN reduces engine power and engine braking for extra reassurance on wet or slippery surfaces. TOUR gives full engine power and standard engine braking, for strong acceleration while carrying a pillion and luggage. USER 1 and 2 modes offer the ability to customise between the settings for the preferred combination. Once set, the USER setting is automatically stored so there’s no need to re-set each time the ignition is turned on.

DCT offers choice of Automatic (AT) or Manual Transmission (MT) 3-levels of S mode for wide-ranging sporty AT shifting performance

Honda has sold over 240,000 DCT-equipped motorcycles across Europe since the system first appeared as an option on the VFR1200F in 2009. Testament to its acceptance in the marketplace, since the NT1100’s introduction, 66% of customer have chosen the DCT option over the manual. The system delivers consistent, seamless gear changes and very quickly becomes second nature in use. It uses two clutches: one for start-up and 1st, 3rd and 5th gears, the other for 2nd, 4th and 6th, with the mainshaft for each clutch located inside the other for compact packaging.

Each clutch is independently controlled by its own electro-hydraulic circuit. When a gear change occurs, the system pre-selects the target gear using the clutch not currently in use. The first clutch is then electronically disengaged as, simultaneously, the second clutch engages.

The result is a consistent, fast and seamless gear change. Furthermore, as the twin clutches transfer drive from one gear to the next with minimal interruption of the drive to the rear wheel, any gear change shock and pitching of the machine is minimised, making the change feel direct as well as smooth. Extra benefits include durability (as the gears cannot be damaged by missing a gear) impossibility of stalling, low stress urban riding, reduced rider fatigue and – crucially – the ability to concentrate more on riding lines, braking and acceleration points.

The DCT system offers two distinct riding approaches – Automatic Transmission (AT), with pre-programmed shift patterns which constantly read vehicle speed, gear selected and engine rpm to decide when a shift should occur, and Manual Transmission (MT), for gear changes using the paddle-shift style triggers on the left handlebar.

There are two settings within AT to choose from; D mode offers effortless riding and maximum fuel efficiency. S mode serves up 3 levels of sports-based shifting. Level 1 is the most modest, changing gears in the medium rpm range. Level 3 is the most aggressive and operates at high rpm with Level 2 is the intermediate point between the two. The preferred selection can also be saved.

There are a range of accessories tailor made ready for the NT1100, including quickshifter with autoblipper function, and aluminium cosmetic panels for the luggage. To make it easy for an owner to get their NT1100 the way they want it, 3 packs are also available (all items can also be purchased separately):

The Urban Pack has been developed to enhance the NT1100 commuter abilities and features:

50L top box with inner bag, comfort back rest, 5L tank bag.

The Touring Pack increases the luggage capacity of the NT1100, further strengthening the touring comfort and features:

Rider/pillion comfort seats, comfort pillion footpegs fog lights.

The Voyage Pack is the ultimate accessory pack for the NT1100 and combines both the Urban and Touring Packs and features

50L top box with inner bag, comfort back rest, 5L tank bag, rider/pillion comfort seats, comfort pillion footpegs fog lights.

Other accessories available for the NT1100 include:

38L top box Parking lever and cover 3L Tank Bag Quick Shifter for MT version Aluminium pannier and top box panel Decorative stripes set

All technical information and features about the NT1100 presented in this article were provided by Honda .

Top 10 Touring Bikes For Beginners

Model overview.

Honda claims the NT1100, which debuted in 2022, is a new breed of Honda tourer, delivering agile handling and enjoyable performance without compromising comfort, for both rider and passenger. The seat height is low at just over 32 inches and the steering geometry is sharp to easily turn directions. All this is paired with a high-end suspension system to create a sporty package and a fast tourer . The NT1100 is ergonomically designed with rider comfort in mind. The low seat offers a good amount of lumbar support and is wide enough at the back to comfortably hold and distribute the rider's weight, while being narrower as it nears the fuel tank, allowing for more rider engagement with a flexible riding position.

A wide, five-way adjustable windshield helps protect rider and passenger from the elements, while at the same time, not getting in the way of the rider's view of the road. The bike's versatility is further enhanced by its luggage choices, ideal for those yearning for longer trips. As most Hondas, the NT1100 is well-designed, engineered and thought out, and it has earned a coveted place in Honda's touring lineup, alongside the legendary Honda Gold Wing .

Engine And Electronics

The NT1100 shares its engine with the Africa Twin. This parallel twin had its intake and exhaust tuned for smooth acceleration and a pleasing low-rpm sound, ideal for long stints of highway riding. The bike rides on 120/70-17 tires up front and 180/55-17 at the back. The 5.3 gallon fuel tank offers nearly 250 miles of range. This engine choice is on point as it has proven to be quite a versatile powertrain, equipping other Honda models as well such as the Rebel 1100 , which also got a different tune to prioritize the cruiser riding style. The power delivery is strong, and yet, predictable and controllable, making it well suited for commuting and long-distance touring.

NT1100 Engine Specs

Honda only disclosed the torque figures for the NT1100, which is about one lb. ft. less than the 2023 Africa Twin, so the 98 horsepower number was estimated based on that small torque reduction. As a reference, the Africa twin makes about 101 horsepower. The Dual Clutch transmission is an optional and works just like an automatic transmission does, but it also offers the rider a chance to manually shift gears in manual mode. The NT1100 electronic package includes three-level selectable torque control and wheelie control. The lighting is full LED and the turn indicators are self-canceling.

The New Honda Africa Twin Is Out And It Packs More Punch!

The Chassis of the NT1100 also comes from the Africa Twin, a most reassuring feature. The steel semi-double cradle frame with bolt-on aluminum subframe is tested and proven and suits the sport-tourer nature of the NT1100. A key difference from its more adventurous sibling, the off-road suspension was replaced for a more on-road focused system matched to that sharper steering geometry. The inverted 43mm Showa front forks have 5.9-inches of travel, just like the single-tube, pressurized rear shock. The rear spring preload is hydraulically adjustable for when the rider needs to carry a passenger and luggage.

The aluminum wheels made with intersecting spoke design, which means the spokes connect to the rims diagonally helps smooth road vibrations while in a straight line, while providing high rigidity during cornering. The 17-inch wheel size is more practical on paved surfaces as well since they're easier to change directions than bigger wheels like the 21-inch front, 18-inch back wheels of the Africa Twin , that make for a better off-road package since they need to be big to overcome bigger obstacles with more control. On paved surfaces, though, they end up becoming more of a hindrance.

On the safety and performance side, the Honda NT1100 comes with radial mounted four-piston front brake calipers for outstanding braking power and feedback. In addition, the emergency lights activate in the case of an abrupt stop while riding at over 31 MPH. These emergency lights, like the indicators, are also self-canceling.

Might Well Come Stateside

Honda's quality products and commitment to providing an enjoyable riding experienced has proven to be a good strategy. In the U.S. its market share sits in second place, close to the leader, Harley-Davidson . The NT1100 offers an excellent touring package that's accessible, both for a wide range of riders, but also in price.

The NT1100 is equally adept at being your daily commuter or conquering long trips through the continental USA. In addition to its dynamic capabilities, the bike proves Honda's commitment to rider and passenger comfort, which is something of great importance in touring motorcycling, so that a long trip stays pleasant, rather than feeling like a chore. With the parallel twin power full of low-end torque, and its dynamic on-road tuned chassis and suspensions, the NT1100 just begs to be ridden on U.S. highways and country roads. Alas, Honda has not yet announced any concrete plans of bringing it Stateside. We'll keep our fingers crossed.

2022 Honda NT1100 review | What is the NT1100 like to live with?

Alex Strange's picture

To find out what the Honda NT1100 is like to live with, Toad has spent the last couple of weeks touring and commuting around the UK

BEING completely honest, I was a bit gutted that I had to miss the launch of the Honda NT1100 last winter, and even more frustrated that my calendar kept me from riding it for most of this summer! This update has been written by Toad Hancocks .

To read  Alex 's launch report, click here.

That frustration was eased slightly though when a man and van from Honda arrived to swap my Honda CBR1000RR-R SP 30 th Anniversary Edition for a sleek-looking Grey Metallic version of the NT, complete with a trick DCT gearbox.

I’ve only seen the new Honda NT1100 in the flesh once before, and that was at EICMA in 2021, just before Alex flew off to Almeria for the road-riding launch. With it being based on the Africa Twin’s frame and engine platform, it’s obviously a big bike, with brilliant road presence. I am though impressed by how hard you have to look to spot any of its adventure-derived underpinnings. Like every other big-capacity Honda, the fit and finish is great, and while you’d never call it pretty, it does seem solidly put together, and sensibly designed.

What is the NT1100 like to live with?

2022-NT1100-review

The first trip I had on the 2022 Honda NT1100was to a trackday at Silverstone where I was checking out the Ducati Streetfighter V4 S on the Silverstone GP circuit. Now, I’m not trying to say that this 40-mile jog down the A5 was a thorough test or anything, I thought of it more like an easy-going introduction.

2022-NT1100-review

Pulling away from home on the morning of my track day, I left in plenty of time and kept the bike in its most conservative DCT mode, D. It’s the most relaxing of all the shifting schedules on the bike, changing up extremely early until at around 35mph you land in top gear. It might not be exciting in any way shape or form, but it is efficient, helping me to achieve close to 60mpg on the ride over to the track - under normal riding conditions I was getting around 55mpg average. If needs must, the shift switches on the left handlebar will override the system, so long as you aren’t asking it to do something outside of its comfort zone.

The ride to the track was pleasant enough and was impressed by the ride quality of the bike. It’s shod with traditional Showa suspension at both ends, not the electronically adjusted kit found on the Africa Twin Adventure Sports and Gold Wing . Sure, some self-levelling kit on a bike like this would be the dream, but the Show Separate Function Big Piston forks are well set up for UK roads.

2022-NT1100-review

Taking the NT for a sportier ride was actually quite eye-opening. Despite its Africa Twin DNA and 238kg kerb weight, it dances about on the road surprisingly well. It has brilliant poise on the brakes too and is nicely balanced when you do tip it into a corner. I was extremely impressed by the latest generation Metzeler Roadtec 01 SE tyres when I tested them in Italy, and the Honda NT1100 is just the kind of bike they are aimed at. They provide excellent grip and feel in all weather and a profile that just sits somewhere between conservative cruising and sporty riding.

2022-NT1100-review

Is the Honda NT1100 a good bike for carrying a pillion passenger?

Mid-way through the loan of the N1100 I popped over to Aldeburgh on the East coast with my other half for a spot of lunch. It was around a 350-mile day in total and was a great opportunity to get to grips with the bike on a longer ride. The first impressions from my pillion were that the NT1100 was an extremely nice place to be. The grab rails and comfy seat were the two biggest talking points, although she also liked the DCT gearbox and its smooth as silk shifting system. The weather protection for the rider from the adjustable screen is mega, a proper Honda case study in getting the profile and angle of the screen just right. I was told that the protection offered by the screen could just about be felt from the back seat, although not to the same degree. The bubble was definitely there, but you couldn’t ride with the visor up on the motorway as the rider can.

2022-NT1100-review

After the ride, I checked in with the good lady to dig a little bit deeper into the way the bike performed from her perspective. From a comfort and security point of view, she really couldn’t fault it. The grab rails are in easy reach, and the overall riding position was described as perfect. We both ended the day ache-free and feeling fresh. If there was one slight grip of the trip, it was when we wanted to dump the bulky textiles before heading for lunch, we really struggled to her jacket and mine into the cases, and you have no chance of fitting in a full-faced lid. You get 33 litres on one side and 32 on the exhaust side. Now, that is a decent amount of space, but the packaging of the bike is overall very slim – likely to make filtering a little easier. The squished pannier design means you are going to have to pack cleverly on longer trips, and if you are the kind of rider that ditches the helmets when you reach your destination, go for the optional 38 or cavernous 50-litre top cases.

2022-NT1100-review

What is the Honda NT1100 like to live with?

Is it the most inspiring motorcycle Honda has ever made? No. Does it have massive headline-grabbing specs and numbers? No. Does it make you go ‘ohhh, I’m gonna ride the wheels off you’ every time you open the garage? Not really. Does any of that detract from how good it is on two-up trips and tours? Again, no. The 2022 Honda NT1100 for me is an example of Honda doing what Honda absolutely does best, taking a very specific design brief and executing it perfectly. Some of the best bikes from Honda’s back catalogue have also been a little bit bland. Bikes like the VFR1200F, Crosstourer, and Pan European, none of them really had one thing about them that made them such big hitters with riders, they just did every really rather well. That’s kind of how I feel about the Honda NT1100.

That’s not to say I don’t have some gripes with the bike though, narrow panniers being one, another being the way the positional lights (in the indicator) reflect off the wind deflectors making me think I’ve left my indicators on, and the screen is a ball ache to adjust - and cannot be done on the fly. And don’t even get me started on the switchgear…

Honda NT1100 2022 review

2022 Honda NT1100 launch review | Written by Alex Strange

Adding to a popular yet ever-growing segment of sports tourers, we were invited out to Barcelona to test the new Honda NT1100 due for release in 2022. Just how much tourer is packed into this sports tourer?

We got our first look at the new tourer around a month ago when it was revealed by Honda, and the ultimate goal for the Honda NT1100 is an attempt at making a road-focused tourer capable of providing top levels of rider comfort and practicality two-up or solo, allowing for tours in all weather conditions laden with full luggage and pillion.

With the superbly popular engine and chassis from the Africa Twin acting as a foundation, the NT has an emphasis on on-road ergonomics & weather protection, promising the perfect setup for long days in the saddle.

2022 Honda NT1100 review | What is the NT1100 like to live with?

We were out in Barcelona, exploring the nearby hills and mountain roads of Muntanyes de Prades on a DCT equipped model, accessorised with the ‘Urban Pack’ (standard-fit 65-litre panniers and 50-litre top box, with a 4.5-litre tank bag).

Side note on the route - absolutely incredible. Despite setting off in wind & rain (were we in Spain or Skegness?) the asphalt on the Spanish roads is consistently smooth, topped with endless views and filled our twisty dreams. Plus there was little to no traffic. Add it to the list if you are after a tour.

2022 Honda NT1100 review | What is the NT1100 like to live with?

Honda NT1100 2022 price and availability

Due to be available in UK dealers in the first few months of 2022, the 2022 NT1100 will be priced at £11,999 for the manual model, and £12,999 for the DCT model.

Compared to the Suzuki GSX-S1000GT (£12,400 with panniers), Yamaha Tracer 9 GT (£12,200) and BMW K1600 range (all over £20,000) - amongst others - the NT1100 is priced competitively to do battle with its big-touring counterparts.

2022 Honda NT1100 review | What is the NT1100 like to live with?

Chief amongst the battle stats is the engine. Utilising the Africa Twin 1084cc parallel twin with 101 bhp @ 7250 rpm and 104 Nm / 77 lb-ft @ 6250 rpm, the twin unit with 270º crank is transplanted into the NT1100, nestling low within the chassis and protected by the huge front fairing.

It’s a lovely motor to ride with, plenty of low-end pull with smooth top-end power, but catch it in the low rev-range in high gears, and it’ll ‘chug-chug-chug’ until it finds some torque. Keep on top of gear changes and this isn’t much of an issue.

2022 Honda NT1100 review | What is the NT1100 like to live with?

With ride-by-wire, there are 5 modes to pick from: Tour, Urban, Rain, User 1 & User 2. Tour is the designated high-power mode, with the display returning the most info. Urban is in the middle, and rain is the lowest power output & lowest engine braking.

Honda Selectable Torque control features, as well as slip rate control, and you can personalise all of the above with the User modes to craft your own ‘super tour’ or ‘pillion mode’ settings.

If matched to the DCT the machine becomes an immensely capable touring unit, with all the on-road guile you’d expect from the Big Red Wing firm. It’s surprisingly agile despite weighing in at 248kg with DCT you’ll be pleased to hear it’s perfectly balanced, with the majority of weight low on the bike, making it well set up for carving up the road.

DCT

Dual Clutch Transmission

The Dual Clutch Transmission is certainly worthy of its own segment here. Honda says that over 200,000 DCT-equipped models have been sold in Europe since it was launched with the 2009 VFR, with the rider granted more focus on the ride, line choice and a bit of scenery on their tours.

Refined for the Honda NT1100 with bespoke settings, the ‘box is unsurprisingly smooth, automatically clicking through gears with barely any interruption to power - though it was extremely keen to shift up to high gears at any opportunity when holding a steady throttle.

For motorway and tour riding that’s fine, but it became a bit tiresome in the hills and mountains if you don’t adjust the shift rate, with the downshift button becoming the most used on the bike. - flick to manual mode, and it opens the door to ride exactly how you need to with well-placed up/down buttons on the left switchgear.

2022 Honda NT1100 review | What is the NT1100 like to live with?

Namely, the lack of disturbance or pitching when shifting up and down - pillions will be glad to hear that, it’ll limit helmet clashing!

2022 Honda NT1100 review | What is the NT1100 like to live with?

Continuing the Africa Twin theme, the steel semi-double cradle main frame is inherited with a slim straight main spar, 6 engine mounts and new NT-specific headlight and radiator stays. The bolt-on aluminium subframe is set to support a pillion and luggage, and is completed with a new 644mm swing arm from gravity die-cast aluminium.

The project leaders for this machine also have a history in the Crossrunner, Crosstourer, VFR & CRF models, and the Gold Wing, so some of that experience has paid dividends here.

It has a fairly long wheelbase at 1535mm, making it stable on the roads but somehow not sacrificing the manoeuvrability, particularly when moving the bike around at walking speed.

2022 Honda NT1100 review | What is the NT1100 like to live with?

Brakes & suspension

Starting with the suspension, 43 mm Showa separate function USD front forks with 150mm stroke are set with 20-clicks of pre-load adjustment, with a rear pro-link swingarm with mono-shock damper (preload adjust and 150mm travel).

The Honda engineers were keen to hear what we thought of the suspension, and it was so smooth and effortless I had to genuinely think about my response.

There’s little to no dive under normal braking, and they contribute to superb road feel once moving - it was genuinely impressive how sporty it felt on twisty roads, and I hadn’t even thought about the suspension. That’s a positive in my book.

2022 Honda NT1100 review | What is the NT1100 like to live with?

Fitted to 17 inch front and rear wheels (with Metzeler Roadtec 01 hoops) are dual 310mm front floating Nissin discs, radially mounted with 4 calipers - and a single 256mm disc on the rear. Initial bite is sharp and crisp, with progressive power provided without unsettling the bike or activating the ABS - but heavy braking will activate the hazard lights, which I’m always hesitant to do.

All in, the NT110 is supremely stable, and again I’ll use the adjective ‘smooth’ to describe the responsiveness on the road.

2022 Honda NT1100 review | What is the NT1100 like to live with?

I think it’s worth covering the style of this NT up close. Designed in the Rome R&D facility, we first locked eyes on the CB4X at EICMA 2019, but we’re told this NT1100 had been in the pipeline for around 2-3 years, despite becoming a parallel twin in its final form.

The styling of this machine is rather surprising. In photos and videos, it looks almost top-heavy and ‘bulbous’ for lack of a better word. But in person, you can see hints of the sleek concept drawing, and even with conservative colour options, it’s not as bad in the metal.

The huge fairing and wind deflectors serve a purpose, too. With a 5-step adjustable screen, top & bottom wind deflectors and that big ol’ fairing, you enter an almost cocoon-like realm at speed.

With the screen at its highest setting, a slight lean forward grants me a noiseless ride, with arms stretched naturally to a wide bar and legs placed nicely on pegs beneath - I came off the bike with no aches.

2022 Honda NT1100 review | What is the NT1100 like to live with?

Touring features

Last, and perhaps most important for most riders looking at this, are the touring features. Standard fit: cruise control, 65 L panniers (33 L on the left, 32 L on the right), 5-step heated grips, a 6.5” touchscreen TFT display with secondary LCD, USB and ACC sockets as standard in the dash, LED lights all round, and a wide pillion seat (60mm thick) with grab rails, low pegs and 175mm ground clearance.

The standard seat height for the NT1100 is 820mm, with a 51 front / 49 rear weight distribution. Fully fuelled, the 20.4-litre tank is said to provide around 250 miles of range - in real-world riding, I’d expect lower. Our ride was 220 km and at the end of the ride we were on the last bar.

Special mention to the 6.5” TFT screen, which as standard allows the Android Auto and Apple CarPlay functionality, which is an absolutely huge feature for some (myself included). Connecting your phone will mean all the music, phone and navigation you could ever need, and you can flick between the smartphone and Honda display easily.

2022 Honda NT1100 review | What is the NT1100 like to live with?

Panniers will unfortunately not fit a lid in, but add the 50L top box and you should be able to fit yours in there. Some may be after a larger pannier box, but that would increase the width and make filtering difficult - so they say.

Riding in adverse weather is no problem, either. Grippy and comfortable to push on in the wet, the weather protection is seriously good when you’re moving.

But as far as tourers go, this NT1100 ticks all of the boxes. Perhaps the fuel range would be worth a look, given our ride seemed to return less than the 400km given range, but considering you can fill up and continue on in a matter of minutes it’s palatable (yes, that’s an electric motorcycle joke).

2022 Honda NT1100 review | What is the NT1100 like to live with?

Like /dislike

Like: TFT screen, top rider comfort for long days in the saddle, very easy to ride thanks in part to DCT.

Dislike: Miles per gallon is in question, DCT box loves to shift up (without fiddling with settings), some may say it’s fairly conservative in style.

2022 Honda NT1100 review | What is the NT1100 like to live with?

Honda will hope that its on-road based tourer will tempt the touring market, and with the gadgets and tech (like the TFT dash and DCT), it’s certainly worth a look.

Personally, I think Honda has gone for function over form here. With a long-running history of reliability and cutting-edge design, the package on offer is absolutely a head-turner - whether that’s for the eyebrow-raising style or the touring capability here.

It’s all designed in a way to make riding comfortable, easy and ultimately fun. DCT, smooth riding experience, touring gadgets, cocoon weather protection. It’s rolled up in a package that makes an all-day ride simply a joy.

2022 Honda NT1100 review | What is the NT1100 like to live with?

It’s fairly understated in the sense that a Honda would typically be, it’s not as lairy as the Yamaha Tracer 9 GT, not as ‘sporty’ as the GSX-S1000 GT, but it slots right in as a ‘function over form’ machine that many Honda fans will appreciate.

When reviewing bikes, I think one of the most important barometers is seeing whether I’d want to do it all again the next day - was it any fun? The answer tends to be yes, because who doesn’t love riding motorcycles, but ultimately I was extremely keen to go and do it all again.

I’ll admit that I wasn’t brimming with anticipation prior to riding it, but I’m happy to say this did it all.

Waking up the next day and seeing the bikes being readied for the next group, I’d have happily donned my RST gear and gone for another ‘mini tour’. The NT1100 was effortless to ride, so smooth and balanced, filled with tech, and certainly a happy place to be - it’s a big tick in the box.

View this post on Instagram                       A post shared by Visordown.com (@visordown)

I’d certainly recommend a go on one of these, they should be ready for test rides in January in UK dealers, and the DCT box is a huge distinguishing factor - particularly for tourers who may enjoy the ease of use of the DCT.

Huge thanks to Honda for having us out on the launch, check the Honda site for full details , specs and to build your own.

2022 Honda NT1100 Details Price Spec_01

We revealed way back in February that Honda was planning to launch an Africa Twin-based tourer under the NT1100 name for 2022. Now it’s here and despite sharing its main parts with an on-trend adventure bike the NT is an out-and-out touring machine in the mould of several Honda favourites of the past.

Speaking about the bike’s inspiration, NT1100 Large Project Leader Koji Kiyono said: “At Honda we have a long tradition of catering for owners who desire a ‘traditional’ touring bike. Our previous Pan European and Deauville models have enjoyed a very loyal following for many years. So, when it came time to design a new touring model we wanted to produce something that would resonate – and appeal broadly – to these traditional touring bike customers.”

2022 Honda NT1100 Details Price Spec_04

Although references to the Deauville and Pan European might conjure worries that the NT1100 will be a stodgy, staid machine, Koji Kiyono is keen to emphasise the NT1100’s handling prowess, saying: “We also wanted to stoke desire in riders of all ages and tastes who are looking for a genuinely new and versatile fun bike. That’s why we’ve created our new NT1100, offering thoroughly modern engine performance, a fun-to-handle chassis, a suite of modern technology and completely fresh, distinctive styling.”

Although we’ve long known the NT1100 will inherit the Africa Twin’s 1084cc, SOHC parallel twin engine – and it does, with power and torque figures of 101hp at 7500rpm and 77lbft of torque at 6250rpm – the motor gets fractionally tweaked with a revised intake duct and exhaust silencer. Less expected is the fact that the NT1100 also carries over the Africa Twin’s steel double cradle frame, allied to a bolt-on aluminium subframe, instead of getting a purpose-made chassis of its own.

Allied to Showa suspension at both ends – 43mm inverted SFF-BP forks with adjustable and a monoshock at the rear, both ends adjustable for preload and offering 150mm of travel – and a relatively short 1535mm wheelbase, Honda claims sharp handling. A 26.5-degree head angle doesn’t promise ultra-quick steering, but with a relatively light 238kg kerb weight for the base model the NT1100 should be a lot more fun than an ST1300 Pan European.

The use of radial brakes, with two four-pot calipers gripping 310mm discs at the front and ABS but – perhaps surprisingly – no linked braking system, emphasises the performance aspects of the bike.

2022 Honda NT1100 Details Price Spec_07

When it comes to styling, the main driver appears to have been aerodynamics and rider comfort, with Honda putting a lot of focus onto the five-height adjustable screen, with additional wind deflectors, and bodywork that manages to deflect air around the rider despite not being a complete full-fairing design.

Luggage is standard, with a pair of detachable panniers that offer a combined 65 litres of storage space (33 litres for the left, 32 litres for the right pannier, which sits above the low-slung exhaust silencer). A 50-litre top case with built in pillion backrest is an optional extra as part of either the ‘Urban’ or ‘Touring’ options packs. A large, 20.4 litre fuel tank gives a theoretical range of around 250 miles between fill-ups.

Even though it shares its chassis with the Africa Twin, the NT1100 manages a respectably low 820mm seat height.

Heated grips are standard, along with cruise control and Bluetooth connectivity via an instrument pack – shared with the Africa Twin and featuring a 6.5in colour TFT above a smaller LCD display – that includes Apple CarPlay and Android Auto as well as three display modes.

The dash also accesses the bike’s riding modes, wheelie control and traction control settings, each offering three pre-set levels. Urban mode combines mid-level engine power and engine braking, Rain setting reduces both power and engine braking and Tour mode gives full performance and a ‘standard’ level of engine braking. There are also two ‘User’ modes that can be customised and stored.

2022 Honda NT1100 Details Price Spec_10

Like the Africa Twin it’s based on, the NT1100 can also be had with Honda’s DCT semi-automatic transmission. Based on the dual-clutch system that debuted on the 2009 VFR1200 and has appeared on a host of Hondas since then, the DCT box offers seamless changes thanks to the ability to select two gears simultaneously, shifting by simply disengaging one clutch and engaging the other. As on other models, the DCT box has both a fully-auto setting where it changes gear without any rider input – with four selectable settings to tailor the aggression of the changes and how long the engine holds each gear – and a manual mode allowing the rider to take control of shifts via paddles on the left bar.

As on other DCT models, the complex electro-hydraulic box adds 10kg to the bike’s weight, bringing the NT1100 to 248kg wet.

Opt for the lighter, cheaper manual version of the NT1100 and you can still experience clutchless shifts by adding a conventional quickshifter and autoblipper, available as an option.

2022 Honda NT1100 Details Price Spec_13

Other options include three packs (although the items in them can also be ordered separately). The first ‘Urban’ pack includes the 50 litre top box, comfort back rest and a 4.5 litre tank bag. The ‘Touring’ pack swaps the stock rider and pillion seats for ‘comfort’ versions, adds different pillion pegs and auxiliary fog lights, while the ‘Voyage’ pack combines the two – with the tank bag, top box, comfort seat and pegs, and fog lights all included.

2022 Honda NT1100 Price

How much for all this? Perhaps surprisingly, the NT1100 is significantly cheaper than the Africa Twin it’s based on. The entry-level model comes in at £11,999 (the cheapest Africa Twin is £13,049), and the DCT version is £1000 more at £12,999 (Africa Twin DCT: £13,949).

In keeping with the NT1100’s subdued looks and its heritage in bikes like the Pan European and Deauville, the initial colour options are subdued, with the choice of ‘matte iridium grey metallic’, ‘pearl glare white’ or ‘graphite black’.

Dealers are expected to get demonstrate bikes in early January, with customer deliveries expected to follow in February or March 2021.

Honda NT1100 Tourer Unveiled For Europe

NT1100

Just a few days ago, we showed you Honda’s teaser video of its upcoming touring machine .   Now, Honda Europe is pulling the wraps off and is unveiling the NT1100 touring motorcycle.   Honda says the bike “ushers in a New Touring Era for 2022.”

Honda says that the new NT is for those who want “…performance, handling, long-range comfort and a full range of technology but not necessarily the image or physical dimensions of ‘adventure” bike.  They believe that many want a “straightforward” touring bike but with high specs and a sporty edge to its roadgoing performance.  And Honda thinks that its NT1100 is the sort of bike that can be a weekday commuter or an extended tour mount.  And it can do it all two up and fully loaded.

NT1100

The 2022 HONDA NT1100 has an aggressive-looking front end.

In making comparisons to its touring heritage, Honda says that the NT1100 is a comfortable, agile, and enjoyable “New Touring breed.” Their design thesis hopes to draw those with memories of previous similar Hondas of the past and attract younger riders looking to “move up from a middleweight machine.”

Aero and rider wind protection

According to Honda, the NT1100 uses subtle styling to deliver efficient aerodynamic performance. Protecting the rider from the elements is a 5-way height-adjustable windscreen.  Complementing the screen are both upper and lower wind deflectors which provide additional rider protection.  The NT1100 also offers a riding position tailored to touring comfort.

2022 Honda NT1100 Guide

2022 Honda NT1100

2022 Honda NT1100: RACING DNA INSIDE.

Introducing the 2022 honda nt1100….

A new breed of Honda tourer makes its debut. Taking the heart of the CRF1100L Africa Twin as a starting point, the NT1100 builds on the platform to offer comfortable, agile, enjoyable performance. A low seat height and sharp steering geometry combine with high specification suspension to create a sporting package. 5-way height and angle adjustable screen and upper/lower wind deflectors ensure high-speed aero efficiency and outstanding weather protection; cruise control is standard, as are slim panniers and heated grips. Rider aids include 3 default riding modes, 2 USER custom options, Honda Selectable Torque Control (HSTC) and Wheelie Control. Radial-mount four-piston front calipers provide the braking power, 120/70-17 and 180/55-17 front and rear tyres the grip. A 6.5-inch TFT touch screen rounds out a premium specification and features Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity.

Comfortable, agile, enjoyable. The NT1100 in a nutshell. Sleek, subtle styling delivers efficient aerodynamic performance with a riding position tailored for touring. Screen height and angle are 5-way adjustable and upper and lower wind deflectors also work to protect the rider. A 6.5-inch TFT touch screen provides full colour, customisable displays and offers Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity. Cruise control, heated grips and sizable integrated panniers are standard equipment.

The NT1100’s steel semi-double cradle frame employs a relatively short wheelbase and sharp steering geometry while suspension is via 43mm Showa cartridge-type inverted front forks and single-tube rear shock. Rear spring preload adjusts hydraulically. Dual 310mm front discs are paired with 4-piston radial-mount calipers; tyres are sized 120/70-17 front and 180/55-17 rear.

It also features full-fat performance from the twin-cylinder engine, inherited from the Africa Twin, but with intake and exhaust tuned for super-smooth acceleration and a pleasing low-rpm sound. The performance does not come to the detriment of fuel economy: the engine’s efficiency allows a 400km range from the 20 litre fuel tank.

The electronic package includes 3-level Honda Selectable Torque Control (HSTC), Wheelie Control, full LED lights, self-cancelling indicators and Emergency Stop Signals. And finding a natural home in the NT11000, Honda’s six-speed Dual Clutch Transmission (DCT) is an option.

2022 Honda NT1100 Totalmotorcycle.com Key Features

  • DCT offers choice of Automatic (AT) or Manual Transmission (MT)

In a motorcycling landscape full of adventure-styled bikes, there is a gap. And that gap exists for riders that desire performance, handling, long range comfort, and technology but not necessarily the image or physical dimensions of ‘adventure’. In other words, what they want is a straightforward touring machine, but one with a rich specification list and a sporty edge to its performance – the sort of bike that deals with the weekday commute efficiently and usefully and is also ready for an extended tour, fully loaded.

The NT1100 is precisely that bike. A new breed of Honda tourer, it’s designed to draw those with a long memory of similar Honda machines of the past, but also attract a much younger rider. Employing the frame and characterful twin-cylinder engine of the CRF1100L Africa Twin as a base, engaging performance is assured. But it’s also packed with features that build and broaden any motorcycle’s appeal.

Koji Kiyono, Large Project Leader, NT1100:

“At Honda we have a long tradition of catering for owners who desire a ‘traditional’ touring bike. Our previous Pan European and Deauville models have enjoyed a very loyal following for many years. So, when it came time to design a new touring model, we wanted to produce something that would resonate – and appeal broadly – to these traditional touring bike customers. But we also wanted to stoke desire in riders of all ages and tastes who are looking for a genuinely new and versatile fun bike. That’s why we’ve created our new NT1100, offering thoroughly modern engine performance, a fun-to-handle chassis, a suite of modern technology and completely fresh, distinctive styling.

We sincerely hope that many new owners will try exploring to the maximum all of its many capabilities.”

2022 Honda NT1100 Totalmotorcycle.com Features and Benefits

Styling & equipment.

Sleek styling offers excellent aerodynamic performance 5-stage screen height and angle adjustment plus upper/lower wind deflectors Panniers standard equipment, as are heated grips and cruise control 5-inch TFT touch screen includes Apple CarPlay, Android Auto and Bluetooth connectivity USB socket, centre stand and ACC socket as standard

And of course this motorcycle’s sleek form is also about function – aimed to elevate the quality of the riding experience.

The exhaust muffler, too is set low to maximise pannier volume.

Apple CarPlay, Android Auto and Bluetooth connectivity allows access to smartphone functions via the TFT display.

The premium specification is rounded out by full LED lights (with DRL), self-cancelling indicators and Emergency Stop Signals; practicality is further elevated by USB socket, centre stand and ACC socket as standard.

The NT1100 will be available in the following colour options:

Matte Iridium Gray Metallic

Pearl Glare White

Graphite Black

Wheelbase is set at 1535mm, with rake and trail of 26.5°/108mm and 175mm ground clearance Kerb weight for the NT1100 with manual transmission is 238kg, 248kg with DCT.

Dual 310mm front discs are squeezed by lightweight, 4-piston radial-mount calipers. The rear 256mm disc uses a 1-piston caliper. All braking is ABS-controlled.

1,084cc SOHC 8-valve parallel twin-cylinder engine Power and torque output of 75kW/104Nm Intake and exhaust tuned to deliver smooth, powerful acceleration and pleasing low-rpm ‘throb’

The NT1100’s 1,084cc SOHC 8-valve parallel twin-cylinder engine is the well-proven units from the CRF1100L Africa Twin, with peak power of 75kW @ 7,250rpm and 104Nm @ 6,250rpm peak torque.

The crankcases are split vertically and the water pump is housed within the clutch casing with a thermostat integrated into the cylinder head.

In addition for EURO5 Linear Air Flow (LAF) sensors in the downpipes give accurate measurement of the air/fuel mixture ratio.

Engine Electronics

3 default riding modes to choose from, plus two customisable USER modes 3-level Honda Selectable Torque Control 3-level Wheelie Control

URBAN is standard and offers an all-round middle setting of engine power and engine braking.

RAIN reduces engine power and engine braking for extra reassurance on wet or slippery surfaces.

Dual Clutch Transmission (DCT)

DCT offers choice of Automatic (AT) or Manual Transmission (MT) 3-levels of S mode for wide-ranging sporty AT shifting performance

Honda has sold over 200,000 DCT-equipped motorcycles across Europe since the system first appeared as an option on the VFR1200F in 2009. Testament to its acceptance in the market place, across Honda’s model range, 53% of customers chose the DCT option over the manual in 2020.

Accessories

There are a range of accessories tailor made ready for the NT1100, including quickshifter with autoblipper function, and aluminium cosmetic panels for the luggage. To make it easy for an owner to get their NT1100 the way they want it, 3 packs are also available (all items can also be purchased separately):

Walking on Red Square in Moscow: one of the unmissable things to do in Moscow

Iconic place and one of the must-see places in Moscow and even in Russia! Besides, if there was only one place to visit in Moscow in 2 days, this place would then be Red Square, without hesitation. Therefore, starting the city tour with Red Square is ideal . Several buildings are on the square, but not all of them have to be visited. Check out my blog post about Moscow’s Red Square in detail to learn more and not miss anything.

Red Square Moscow

Visiting Saint-Basil’s Cathedral inside

Even more emblematic than Moscow’s Red Square! Built in the middle of the 16th century under the orders of Tsar Ivan Le Terrible, this cathedral is one of the most beautiful monuments of Orthodox art, and definitely one of the unmissable places in Moscow. Visiting Saint-Basil’s Cathedral inside is one of the most beautiful things to do in Moscow!

Saint Basil's Cathedral

Take a walk in Zariadye park: one of the coolest things to do in Moscow after visiting Red Square

Zaryadie Park is just a 10-minute walk from St. Basil’s Cathedral, so it’s easy to include in your itinerary if you’re going to visit Moscow in 2 days. From its heights, you can see the red walls of the Kremlin. But, the most impressive point of view is the platform which overlooks the Moskva river. A must see! And clearly one of the coolest things to do in Moscow!

  • Open 24 hours a day
  • Good to know! Park Zaryadye is also a place to visit in Moscow in winter. Find out more here: What to do in Moscow in winter?

In addition, several pedestrian or one-way streets are located north of the theater. It is therefore very pleasant to find them to leave the main axes of the megalopolis.

Visit the Moscow Kremlin

Visit Kremlin is on top of things to do in Moscow. A place of power for centuries, the Kremlin then shows us a whole different image when viewed from the inside. If you want to visit Moscow in 2 days, the Kremlin is certainly one of the must-see places in Moscow.

  • Opening hours : Daily from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., except Thursday.
  • See our blog post about visiting the Moscow Kremlin

Moscow Kremlin: skip-the-line tickets and 8 things not to miss

Visit the Cathedral of Christ the Savior

This impressive Moscow Cathedral is the seat of the Russian Orthodox Church. It is a must see if you visit Moscow in 2 days and clearly one of the things to do in Moscow. The Cathedral of Christ the Savior was first built in 1883 in memory of Russia’s victory over Napoleon’s Grand Army. Then in 1931 Stalin ordered its destruction. It was then rebuilt again (identically) only in 2000.

  • Where? Ulitsa Volkhonka 15. At the foot of the Kropotkinskaya metro station.
  • Opening hours . Daily: 10: 00-17: 00, except Monday: 13: 00-17: 00
  • Free entry (some closing restrictions, for example a short)

Good to know! In orthodox religious places, one must avoid excessively uncovered clothing. Women should cover their heads. After visiting the Cathedral of Christ the Savior, you can explore Bolotny Island and Gorky Park. This is one of the routes our guide to Moscow.

Cathedral of Christ the Savior

The old Krasny Oktyabr factory: one of the coolest things to do in Moscow

If you cross the Moskva River by a pedestrian bridge which is located just in front of the Cathedral of Christ the Savior, you will enjoy a beautiful view of the city and at the same time you can discover Balchug Island. Furthermore, if you want to visit Moscow in 2 days, you can include this island in your itinerary between the cathedral and Gorky park. Here is the old confectionery factory Krasny Oktyabr, which has gradually turned into a fashionable micro-district. There are then some elements of street art, cafes and restaurants and some Moscow bohemian side. At the end of the island you can see a gigantic 98-meter-high monument dedicated to the Russian reforming tsar Pierre The Great.

Good to know! You can find on this island are the trendiest nightclubs in Moscow. On weekends, there are taxi caps after midnight so there are so many people. On the other hand, if you go there in winter and during the day, the island is quite empty and less interesting to see.

Gorky Park is one of the TOP places to visit in Moscow, because it allows you to better understand the life of the locals and their rhythm. In fact, it’s a huge entertainment park. For example, in winter there is a giant ice rink and in summer – free dance or yoga lessons, sandy beaches for playing volleyball, an outdoor cinema. So, like the locals, have a Stakantchik (ice cream or cooked corn), and enjoy the atmosphere of the place: that’s one of the interesting things to do in Moscow to discover the city.

  • Where? Krymsky Val 9. 20 minutes’ walk from Krasny Oktyabr, along the quays.

Sparrow Hill and Moscow State University

The Sparrow Hill, Vorobiovy Gori in Russian, is the highest point in Moscow. It is rather known to Russians, but less to travelers. A nice view on Moscow opens from the hill, and in particular on the Luzhniki Stadium. In addition, on the hill itself is the Moscow State University: an impressive skyscraper from the Soviet era.

  • How to get there? By bus T7 (35 min) from Oktyaborskaya station, near Gorki Park. By metro (Vorobiovy Gorki station) + climb the hill on foot. On foot along the Moskva along the Gorky Park (1h30) + climb in funiculars.

Good to know! It is possible to cross the Moskva river by funicular. We actually tested it and it was pretty cool! That is one of our favorite things to do in Moscow!

What to do in Moscow

What to do in Moscow in 3 days?

If you are going to visit Moscow in 3 days, it would be interesting to dive into the Soviet era which strongly marked the country and the city. After the Bolshevik Revolution, the capital was transferred from Saint Petersburg to Moscow, in order to mark the change of power. Moscow then became the world showcase for communist ideology. Here are the best things to do in Moscow for 3-day-trip!

VDNKh, visit Moscow of the Soviet era

VDNKh is a large exhibition center in the north of Moscow, where there are still several striking witnesses of the USSR. The most interesting are the Museum of Cosmonauts and the Statue of the Worker and the Kolkhozian , which will certainly impress you with its size!

Visit

GULAG History Museum

The explanations of the museum are very well done. We really have the feeling of going back in time. If you are going to visit Moscow in 3 days and you are interested in history and this subject in particular, I recommend this museum. Visit the GULAG History Museum is one of the most interesting things to do in Moscow.

Discover the Patriarche Pounds district

It’s a nice neighborhood in Moscow where you can come across rather affluent locals, but not necessarily very bling-bling. Take a walk in this area is really a cool thing to do in Moscow! In addition, the Ponds of Patriarch is one of the places of Bulgakov’s novel “Master and Margarita”. As this is an interesting area to see, we have included it in a walking tour of Moscow. The route ends at the Moscow Kremlin, which is very convenient, because you will be able to visit Moscow in 3 days by optimizing your trips.

What to visit in Moscow in 4 days: TOP things to do in Moscow in 4 days

If you want to visit Moscow in 3 days, you will already see a lot of things. On the other hand, if you stay one more day, you have plenty to do! The Novodevichy Convent, the Tchistie Proudy district and the Izmaylovo Kremlin are very good candidates for you, if you are going to visit Moscow in 4 days.

Visiting Novodevichy Convent in Moscow

The Novodevichy Convent is one of the most brilliant examples of Russian architecture, according to UNESCO. This beautiful complex was built in 1524 and today consists of the convent, but also of a cemetery whose status could be compared to that of Père-Lachaise in Paris. Visiting Novodevichy Convent is one of the great things to do in Moscow, if you want to go a little bit outside of the center!

What to see in Moscow in one day

Discovering Tchistye Proudy district

It’s one of the most popular areas of Moscow, with many cafes, restaurants and bars nearby. It is therefore a place to discover if you want to visit Moscow in 4 days. It is just as pleasant for a stroll as for the discovery of local life. For example, in winter the pond turns into an ice rink.

Visiting the Izmaylovo Kremlin, one of the coolest things to do in Moscow!

The Izmaylovo Kremlin is more of a tourist than a historic place. On the other hand, it is a pretty impressive place to discover, especially on weekends. Inside the Kremlin, there is a flea market where you can find a little bit of everything, but mostly good souvenirs to bring from Moscow. For example, chapka, traditional Russian scarves or matryoshka (Russian dolls). Add the Kremlin and the Izmaïlovo market to your itinerary if you are going to visit Moscow in 4 days, because it is a nice and very colorful place! Visiting the Izmailovo Kremlin is one of the things to do in Moscow, if you want to put colors in your Instagram account! 😉

Things to do Moscow blog

In 4 days, we will have the opportunity to see several Moscow: Classic Moscow, Moscow of old Russia, Soviet Moscow and a little bit of the new Moscow. So what to visit in Moscow on the 5th day of travel?

What to visit in Moscow in 5 days?

Art lovers will be delighted to discover the Tretyakov Gallery and the Pushkin Museum of Fine Arts, while others will prefer to stroll along Arbat Street, see the buildings of Moskva-City or visit Bunker 42.

Admiring Russian art at Tretyakov Gallery

Founded in 1856 by an industrialist and great lover of art, the gallery has grown over the decades, and then bequeathed to the state. Today the collection includes more than 140,000 pieces, 15,000 of which are paintings. Visiting the Tretyakov Gallery is one of the things to do in Moscow if you want to discover Russian art!

  • Where? Pereoulok Lavrouchinski 10. A 5-minute walk from Tretiakovskaya station
  • Opening hours. Open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. until 9 p.m. Thursday and Friday. Closed on Mondays.
  • Entry tickets. 500 RUB.

Museum to see

Visiting the Pushkin Museum of Fine Arts

The Pushkin Museum of Fine Arts presents the treasures of ancient Egypt, the paintings of Rembrandt and Cézanne, a fine collection of Impressionism.

  • Where? Ulitsa Volkhonka 12
  • Opening hours. Daily: 10: 00-20: 00, except Thursday: 11: 00-21: 00. Closed on Mondays. The boxes close an hour before closing.
  • Entry tickets. The prices vary according to the collections from 300 to 750 RUB.

Walking on Arbat Street

All Russians know Rue Arbat. So, walking on Arbat street is one of the things to do in Moscow. However, after the years, little by little it became very touristy. This is a pedestrian street only. There are souvenir shops, restaurants and cafes there, but it is no longer the most authentic neighborhood in the city.

Seeing the buildings of Moskva-City (Moscow City)

Moskva-City is Moscow’s business center, much like Paris’s Defense district. The skyscrapers of Moskva-City are among the tallest in Europe: 373 meters high! Very nice place to see at dusk.

Good to know! You can admire a nice view of Moscow City from the docks of Tarasa Shevchenko. It’s especially beautiful in the evening with all the lights on.

Bunker 42, one of the most unusual things to do in Moscow

Bunker 42 is a secret military complex which was to be used by the Soviets in the event of a nuclear attack: a space of 7000 m² 65 meters underground!

  • Where? 5 Kotelnitcheski Lane, 11.
  • Prices. 2200 RUB per person
  • Opening hours. Open daily from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.
  • Restaurant inside. Original, but rather a tourist trap.

What to visit in Moscow in 6 days or more?

There are still so many places to see, because Moscow is a big megalopolis and there is always something exciting to do there. For example: the ancient Kolomenskoye village or the WINZAVOD contemporary art center .

If you are interested in history and want to see Russian cities on a rather “human scale”, it would certainly be interesting for you to discover the cities of the Golden Ring . For example, it is very easy to get to Sergey Posad from Moscow (less than 2 hours in train). Visiting the Golden Ring is one of the best things to do in Moscow if you are staying more than a 5-6 days.

There are still plenty of places to see in Moscow, however I did my best to list here the best things to do in Moscow, what to see in Moscow in one day, but also in 2, 3, 4 or 5 days in Moscow!

Moscow travel tips:
