Downhill Movement

Aches and pains.

Walking downhill may seem to be a breeze. After you crest a hill, it will feel great to catch your breath and have an easier time while descending. While it takes less energy to go downhill, you will still be getting exercise and health benefits.

However, you will be adding stress to your joints and some people experience knee pain. You can take steps to make your downhill walking pleasant and have less risk of pain or injury .

Walking downhill puts more strain on your knees and ankles than walking uphill or on level ground. You hit the ground harder with each step and the angle does your knees no favors.

Downhill walking is eccentric exercise , lengthening the muscles under load and applying a braking force. This is in contrast to uphill walking, which is concentric exercise , shortening the muscles during contraction. Eccentric exercise is known to produce more delayed-onset muscle soreness , but also to help build and train muscles.

The specific muscles that get a better workout going downhill as compared to level walking include the gluteus maximus (your large butt muscle), quadriceps (front of the thigh muscles), soleus (back of the calf), peroneus (outer side of calf) and tibialis anterior (front of shin). You may feel the effects of exercising these muscles during your bout of downhill walking.

Your body has lower energy demands when going downhill. For example, downhill running consumes only half of the oxygen as running uphill. You burn fewer calories over the same distance. However, because eccentric exercise stimulates muscle building, you also improve your resting metabolism.

When going downhill you only burn 6.6 percent fewer calories per mile than walking on flat ground. That means burning 5 calories per mile less for a 150-pound person.

One of the biggest benefits of downhill walking is that in the natural environment it helps provides balance. When you walk uphill, you work a little bit harder. You'll notice your heart rate increase and the muscles in your lower body work harder to carry you uphill. On the downhill side, the effort will be decreased (although you'll still be working).

Research shows that downhill walking and other eccentric endurance exercise has surprising metabolic benefits improving lipid metabolism and insulin resistance. It improves your lean body mass, which can mean you burn a few more calories even at rest.

The beneficial effects of downhill walking have been seen not only in young, healthy subjects but also in older ones and those with a variety of chronic health conditions.

Downhill walking is better tolerated than uphill or level walking for people with many different conditions, such as cardiac rehab, or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). It can be used to help these people maintain or improve their fitness.

There are some people, however, who may not feel comfortable walking downhill. People who are obese and/or have joint issues such as knee pain may find that walking downhill makes the problem worse. In fact, some research shows uphill walking may be better for those with obesity than faster walking on level ground.

Research bears out what walkers report, that you can end up with muscle aches and soreness the next day. You are most likely to feel this if you aren't used to walking downhill, such as if your typical workout is on a treadmill that doesn't have a decline setting (negative incline), or you do most of your walking on level ground.

Many walkers report that they hate going downhill due to knee pain. Iliotibial band friction syndrome is an overuse injury that causes pain along the outside of your leg and knee, especially when walking downhill.

If you have knee osteoarthritis or other knee conditions, you may feel more pain when walking downhill. Chondromalacia patella or runner's knee is another condition where you can feel pain under the kneecap when going downhill or uphill.

Working on your walking form can help you walk downhill with less risk of pain or slipping.

  • Relax and Flow : Your stride will naturally elongate going downhill. This overstriding is bad on the level, but going downhill it helps to brake you a bit while gravity keeps you moving faster than usual. If you find yourself going too fast, shorten and/or slow down your steps and keep it natural.
  • Don't Lean Back : Leaning back will put you off balance, instead stay upright over your hips and knees or lean very slightly forward.
  • Straight Posture or Lean Slightly Forward: Keep your torso upright or lean slightly forward for stability.
  • Bend Your Knees : On steeper slopes, keep your knees slightly bent at all times.
  • Switchbacking : On very steep slopes or those with a loose surface, take a serpentine path by angling across the slope for a few steps left, then a few steps right. This switchbacking is a common trail design to reduce steepness either uphill or downhill.
  • Take Care on Loose Surfaces: Going downhill has a greater risk of slipping on loose gravel or loose dirt. Although you may want to speed through a downhill, you should take caution on natural surfaces.
  • Use Trekking Poles: Research confirms that trekking poles can help take some of the impact off as you go downhill, plus give you a little extra stability. You may have to adjust the length when you start the descent to make your poles longer.
  • Faster May Be Better for Stability: Oddly enough, going a little faster rather than picking your way down a slope may result in fewer slips. Your balance system will go into gear automatically if you jaunt down a slope, and if you hit a loose rock you are immediately stepping off it and on to the next one. This is the parkour technique. If you take careful steps you are going to have to make sure of stable footing with each step and you are thinking it through rather than using the instinctual balance.

If you are preparing for a long walk that will have both uphill and downhill, you need to do both. Don't limit yourself to doing incline workouts on a treadmill or stair-stepper machine, only going uphill. You also need to train with some sustained downhill. If you will be walking the Camino de Santiago , take this into consideration.

You can check your local terrain for hills that will give you a nice long downhill to walk. You can use online maps and mapping apps to see where the hills are. Check for favorite routes added by local users on apps such as MapMyWalk.

If you live in the flats with no natural hills, you can use ramps of parking garages or overpasses. However, those are shorter and have risks of tangling with traffic.

If you have a health condition such as COPD, or you have a low fitness level and are easily out of breath with exercise, discuss downhill walking with your doctor.

It is more and more being recognized as a good way to get the health benefits of exercise with less of a challenge in breathing. However, since you may wish to avoid going uphill, it's best to find a treadmill that has a decline feature.

Treadmill Decline

Most treadmills have an incline feature , which you can adjust to simulate hills . It's less common that they have a decline feature to simulate going downhill, although this is being seen on more and more models. Check the treadmills available for you to use at local health clubs or community gyms for a decline feature.

Walking Down Stairs

Walking down stairs isn't quite the same as walking downhill, as it creates different stresses on your muscles and joints. But If you tolerate stairclimbing well, find a building of five stories or more and do one or more sets of climbing the stairs. If you hate going up, you can still get good health benefits by taking the stairs down and the elevator up.

A Word From Verywell

Downhill walking has benefits beyond just giving you a breather when you've crested a hill. With a few precautions for those with knee problems , it is a healthy part of a walking workout. Enjoy the views as you get in some healthy strides.

Gone, But Not Forgotten – The Many Meals I Miss

In the quarter-century that I’ve been writing about Utah’s food and drink scene, I’ve seen far too many restaurants come and go. And there are plenty I miss. A jaunt down memory lane conjures up a multitude of meals and people I wish I could break bread with one more time.

Gone, But Not Forgotten

Former Utah Restaurants

Salt lake city.

I miss the late John Williams and Tom Sieg, and I miss Gastronomy Inc., the founders’ flagship restaurant, The New Yorker. Although the cuisine wasn’t always cutting edge, we could always count on The New Yorker for its consistent high quality, and for its luxurious art deco ambiance. It always felt to me like an escape to more refined times, when people still dressed up to go out for a fine dining experience.

There were always fresh flowers adorning the posh dining room, a natty crew of top-notch servers, and of course, Tom Sieg seemingly permanently ensconced at the bar where he would meet and greet guests like they were family. When we lost The New Yorker, we lost a true Salt Lake City treasure.

Another lost treasure—one that endured for 30 years—was Max Mercier’s Le Parisien restaurant, where longtime server Flo Blank was part of the heart and soul of that eatery. With a classic menu featuring continental cuisine such as Chateaubriand, quiche Lorraine, and escargots de Bourgogne, maybe it’s not surprising that Le Parisien didn’t last far into the new millennium. It closed in 2000, but I’ll remember it for being a Utah culinary cornerstone of the last millennium.

9th & 9th

Flo worked for many years at another great French restaurant, The Paris, which closed at the end of last year. Chef/owner Eric DeBonis and chef Emmanuel Levarek brought the flavors of France to the 9th & 9th brasserie with delicious dishes such as moules mariniére, sweetbreads, duck confit, steak au poivre, and so much more. Sitting at the zinc bar made one feel as though they’d just hopped a plane to Paris. Au revoir mon vieil ami.

Downtown SLC lost an inordinate number of really good restaurants in years past; among them were Capitol Cafe, Globe by Moonlight, Mr Z’s, Baci Trattoria, Zola, Tavola, Cafe dell’ Arte, Mikado, Firenze, Cafe Pierpont, Au Bon Appetit Absolute!, The Barking Frog, Brumby’s, D.B. Cooper’s, Tipica, Dijon, Ikigai; and in my opinion, the best restaurant to ever grace Utah’s dining scene: The Metropolitan.

Many of these restaurants were simply ahead of their time and would probably be doing great today serving from the same menus as when they were in business.

In The Mountains

For many years, one of my very favorite restaurants was the original Il Giardino, located on Main Street in Heber City. The food was authentically Italian; I still recall enjoying the most ethereal gnocchi I’ve ever eaten in the small stone house in which the restaurant was situated. Thankfully, chef Paulo Celeste – the backbone of Il Giardino – returned to Utah after time away in Italy and opened his namesake restaurant, Celeste Ristorante, in Murray a couple of years ago.

If you were lucky enough to dine at David Berkowitz’ and Scott Albert’s Campagne in Park City, I’m sure you wish it was still around as much as I do. Ditto Valhalla in Deer Valley at Stein Eriksen Lodge, Bistro Toujours in The Chateaux, Thea’s in the Treasure Mountain Inn, Jean Louis at the Gateway, and one of the finest restaurants to ever open (and close) in Park City: Joe Jafarian’s Chenez restaurant, where I proposed to my wife. Smartest reservation I ever made!

I keep hoping that someone will open a new restaurant in the beautiful Emigration Canyon location that was home to Santa Fe Restaurant and Cactus Club, which sported one of the most gorgeous decks on which to dine in warm weather, surrounded by stunning views and home to terrific dishes like PEI mussels in ancho chile and roasted garlic broth.

Farm-to-Table

Long before it was trendy to do so, chef Don McCradic utilized locally-grown produce and other ingredients, some from Santa Fe’s own garden. C’mon, there must be one restaurateur out there who can bring this delightful dining spot back to life.

And let’s not forget Bowman Brown and Viet Pham’s phenomenal farm-to-table restaurant, Forage. These chefs created some of the most delicious and mind-bending dishes I’ve ever encountered. Gone. Too. Soon.

Not all of the restaurants I long for were fancy. Bill & Nada’s comes to mind, as does Cafe Creole which was located in the ZCMI food court. Marco Schlenz’ Bubba’s restaurant gave us stick to the ribs barbecue and other good things like homemade meatloaf; I still miss the fiery kick of the chili con carne at Elvis Nixon’s Chili Palace in Sandy.

I’d be remiss if I didn’t mention a larger-than-life chef we all miss: Garry Maxwell, who left us way too soon. He cooked at downtown eateries like Fuggles and Panache before opening up his own place: Cafe Bacchus. I give almost anything to be able to enjoy a cocktail and a nosh with Garry again.

Do you have a favorite now-closed restaurant that you dearly miss? Let us know!

Decades seem to dissolve when you sashay along Peacock Alley, the grand promenade through this 112-year-old (and very pink) property. A massive recent renovation transformed the former Hotel Galvez into a Gatsby-esque vision, with harlequin black-and-white marble flooring, brass banisters, crystal chandeliers, and pink-and-white-striped pool cabanas. As the only historic hotel along the Texas Gulf Coast, Grand Galvez leans into its lore with regular tours recounting paranormal activities.

Think access to 10 pools, six restaurants and “treat suites,” rooms on each floor of the inn stocked with drinks and snacks (including ice cream!) available 24/7. Sharing sand with Grayton Beach State Park means nearly 2,000 biodiverse acres to explore, from beach to coastal forest.

Omni Amelia Island Resort, Fernandina Beach, Florida

Even if you’re not a regular golfer, Omni Amelia Island Resort is a fun spot to give it a swing (and soak up some beach relaxation, too). New in 2022, the Little Sandy Short Course has 10 easy holes and an 18-hole putting course, both playable in an hour or two, with a gourmet hotdog bar at the finish. More experienced players can tee off on the Oak Marsh, where beautiful scenery—think moss-draped oaks and most holes on the water—offsets the challenging narrow fairways.

Off Property: Nearby Fort Clinch State Park has fantastic birdwatching, with more than 100 species inhabiting full-time or migrating seasonally. Look for great horned owls, painted buntings and bald eagles.

I bought a house in London and was miserable as soon as I moved in. The single-person tax is higher than I expected.

  • Daniela Vilu became a first-time homeowner in London in 2023 after a challenging journey.
  • The process took years and was filled with sacrifices and outbidding in the city's housing crisis.
  • Despite the fulfillment, she faced post-purchase depression and struggles with financial management.

Insider Today

London is a city designed with young people in mind, but it's almost too expensive for the young. Yet, I feel I've conquered it. I became a first-time homeowner in May 2023, although it took almost everything in me.

When the pandemic hit, I was 34 years old, studying and freelancing in Sweden. I worked part-time as a social-media manager to make ends meet.

In between semesters, I returned to London for a freelance work contract and crashed on a friend's sofa. My two-week stint ended up being an eight-week lockdown. I decided then I would move mountains to get my own place in London.

Three years and many sacrifices later, I signed a contract and was handed the keys to my own flat. As soon as I moved in, I fell into a depression . I didn't have time nor did I allow myself to ask the difficult questions while I was in the midst of it.

When you achieve a goal, the rest of your life begins. I'm one of the lucky ones and yet I felt so miserable after my dream of owning my own place was fulfilled.

The process took longer than expected

The build-up was extraordinary — I spent years dreaming, looking at Pinterest boards, planning, and decorating in my mind.

I started seriously looking for a place in 2021, after finishing my studies and returning to full-time employment. While I was searching, I stayed with different friends. I didn't sign a lease because I didn't expect it to take this long, and I didn't want to pay for someone else's mortgage while saving for mine.

Related stories

I put in my first offer on a flat in early 2022, but it fell through. The search continued. I saw more properties and put in more offers. Because there's a housing crisis in London , I made an offer and got outbid several times.

When I found the flat I ended up buying in October 2022, I was not impressed. It was a relatively new build (2007), spacious, yes, but no character, and it was £20,000 over budget. They accepted my £300,000 offer anyway. I thought I'd be moving in within a few months, but the process took seven months to complete.

Because the process was so long, I felt I had climbed a treacherous mountain of conveyancing, solicitor questions, months of back and forth, and emails upon emails. At the top, the view was worth it, but I felt like I could fall of the cliff at any time.

I can no longer choose how to spend my money

My pre-homeowner nomadic lifestyle that permitted me to splurge on a night out or a quick jaunt to my hometown in Eastern Europe had ended. Every penny has to be accounted for.

My mortgage is quite something, and then there are utilities, water, gas, electricity, and internet — and then the boiler breaks. If I'm finding it hard to manage a budget considered generous by many standards, what about the people working minimum wage?

Then there's the single-person tax . The harsh reality is being a single person sucks, for practical and financial reasons if not for romantic ones.

It's not that I want a partner to share my woes with — strangely enough, I've never factored that in. But when the bills come, it's only me paying for everything. I wouldn't want to enter a relationship just to share the grocery bill with someone, but being single is challenging.

Now I have walls, but I have no youth left in me

Right after I moved in, I was torn between focusing on my accomplishment and my instinct to keep chasing whatever was left unconquered in my life, either personal or professional.

Looking in from the outside, I'm relatively young and successful, I've achieved a great deal, and I'm a first-generation immigrant who managed to become a homeowner in one of the most expensive cities in the world . But none of that feels like it matters if I'm fearful and lonely.

Now that I've been here almost a year, there is light at the end of the tunnel. I do like living alone — I can close my door to the world and be free to run around naked from the bedroom to the kitchen through the hallway and scream my head off if I choose to do so.

I now enjoy the peace and quiet of my flat, although it was eerie and unnerving at first. I may have had to leave my old life behind, but I can smile again. It just took much longer than I expected.

Watch: Was Italy's $1 home scheme worth it?

Liner Notes: Norah Jones lets the sun shine in on ‘Visions’

"Visions," Norah Jones

"Visions," Norah Jones (Blue Note)

It might be tempting to view Norah Jones’s latest, excellent LP “Visions” as the logical counterpart to 2020’s almost-as-excellent “Pick Me Up Off The Floor.” The latter’s dour vibe turned out to be a valuable companion in a time when the world endured its own dour vibes as it shut down due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Her new effort, meanwhile, opens the shades that kept the darkness inside and allows in a healthy dose of sun — as well as a much-needed shot of optimism.

Yet while that may suggest the two sets are yinning and yanging their way in concert, the perfect precursor to these 12 songs is actually her magnum opus, 2009’s “The Fall.” Whereas that sad, lonely effort proved to be a perfect soundtrack to the autumn and winter months during which it was released, “Visions” feels ideal for the spring and summer seasons, serving as a welcome smile for someone who doesn’t do much of it. Her First Lady of Gen Z Alt Rock aura is still there and the music is equally as fuzzy as the tracks that make her better moments better than others’ best, but the doom and gloom that sprinkles some of her most memorable albums are traded in for more expansive, almost existential thinking.

Or, for that matter, the desire to dance.

Case in point: The aptly titled “I Just Wanna Dance.” Jangly in nature and low-key in energy, it sums up the entirely of “Visions” as a more-fun-than-you-think collection, complete with embedded horns and Southern Funk organ riffs. Plus, it’s mindless. Jones, to her credit, vocally does little more than repeat the track’s title, occasionally noting how she doesn’t want to either talk or laugh about “it” as a precursor. Whatever “it” is, this song makes it sound like “it” was never needed in the first place.

That evolution begins from the start here. “All This Time” is a hopefully yearning R&B jaunt lush with backing harmonies and simple drums that could transport listeners to the best parts of ‘70s soul, complete with obligatory falsetto. Single “Paradise” follows that same template with a poppier edge that evokes “Last Time I Saw Him”- era Diana Ross. Jones’s piano playing is scrumptious on it as she trades in virtuosity for taste.

Actually, that’s probably the set’s secret ingredient: While Jones can hang with the best of today’s pop pianists, she’s actually better when she focuses on The Song rather than The Talent. “On My Way” is a fruitful left turn that embodies the dreamy aesthetics the singer was going for when she sat down to write the album (word has it that most of the ideas painting these songs came to Jones in the middle of the night as she was sleeping). “Running,” meanwhile, is simple and charming with the way Jones leans heavily on the call-and-response attack to vocals. And then there’s “Queen Of The Sea,” which is the type of garage blues that has become her signature in recent years.

It adds up to an impressive second outing for the singer and producer Leon Michels, who came over from working with the late Sharon Jones to initially begin collaborating with Norah on her 2021 Christmas album, “I Dream Of Christmas.” That holiday set marked a fuzzy, blurry change in sound for the songstress and those values only increase with each spin here. It makes the future exciting because while “Visions” is a welcome collection, it leaves the feeling that these two have only scratched the surface of what they can do together.

“You get lost, you get found,” Jones sings on the memorable final track, “That’s Life,” before ending the stanza with the regressing, “You break up, you break down.” Turns out, in the case of Norah Jones, sometimes breaking down can lead to seeing clearer than perhaps even she ever thought possible.

2024’s best-looking horror game finally gets a release date.

'Still Wakes the Deep' looks like it could be 2024's scariest horror game.

Still Wakes the Deep , the claustrophobic narrative horror game from indie developer The Chinese Room, has finally got itself a release date–and it’s coming to Game Pass on PC and Xbox from day one.

The first-person claustrophobic horror, which takes place on an oil rig in the North Sea, will land on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC on June 18–a warm summer release that offers a sharp contrast to the freezing, windswept location that terror will unfold on.

Publisher Secret Mode unveiled the game’s release date in a new trailer at the Future Games Show Spring Showcase 2024, bringing both life and death to Still Wakes the Deep ’s irresistible premise–one that even scaredy cats like me will torture themselves with because it just looks so damn good.

In Still Wakes the Deep , you play the role of Caz McCleary, a soon-to-be-divorced Scottish everyman who finds himself spending the Christmas of 1975 on the stormy, cold, bleak Beira D oil platform. However, the drilling process uncovers more than oil, and a malevolent force soon begins to tear the installation apart.

Coinbase Revealed To Be Backing BlackRock s 5 Trillion By 2030 Crypto Game Changer After Bitcoin Ethereum And XRP Price Pump

Google suddenly reveals surprise android update that beats iphone, negative dragon s dogma 2 reviews pour in as players discover its microtransactions.

Its creator The Chinese Room knows a thing or two about storytelling–previous titles include Dear Esther , Everybody’s Gone to the Rapture , and Amnesia: A Machine for Pigs –but Still Wakes the Deep could set a new bar, not least because the studio aims to tap into multiple players’ deepest fears: heights, the dark, the unknown, drowning, loneliness, helplessness, narrow spaces, and much more.

...like body horror.

I was lucky to see sections of Still Wakes the Deep ’s pre-alpha gameplay at last year’s Gamescom, which was so impressive that I put it at the top of my list of games to look out for in 2024 . One can only wonder just how far the game’s come in the months since.

At the time, Still Wakes the Deep was billed as “ Annihilation meets The Poseidon Adventure ”, but the given the oil rig is potentially opening a gate to hell, there was a more fitting mashup name for it in my mind: Event (Deepwater) Horizon . Let’s hope it’s just as indelibly horrific as Paul W. S. Anderson’s epic space jaunt.
