Nazjatar is a dangerous and beautiful place, filled with coral forests and unfathomable deep-sea creatures skittering through passageways and clinging to rockfaces. Secrets that have remained submerged for millennia are now exposed to the surface world, including the ancient ruins of Zin-Azshari , the once-glorious capital of the kaldorei . Further in the depths, the beautiful and terrible city of the naga — and the palace of the Queen of Tides herself — awaits.

The naga of Nazjatar are masters of sorcery and natural dwellers of the ocean deeps. The naga reinforcements sent to Azuremyst Isle for Warlord Sriss'tiz came directly from Nazjatar.

While the Alliance struck a decisive blow to the Horde in the Battle of Dazar'alor , it was not without some casualties. With both sides reeling from the events and healing their wounds, the naga made their move and begin striking against the two. Taking any remaining ships, the Horde and the Alliance set sail and arrive in the ancient land of Nazjatar: the land of the naga and the location of Azshara's seat of power, her Eternal Palace , where they will face Queen Azshara herself.

History [ ]

On March 7th, 2022, Blizzard revealed several upcoming announcements for the Warcraft franchise, including Hearthstone's next expansion and Core set to be revealed on March 15th. [3] However, on the 14th it was announced that the Hearthstone announcement was being moved to March 17th instead. [4]

On March 16th, the official Hearthstone twitter posted a short video of the porthole of a submarine passing by various locations, with the accompanying text "It's almost time to set sail, adventurers!" [5] Shortly afterwards, information about the expansion was mistakenly uploaded to Google Play a day early, revealing the expansion's name and pre-order hero. [6]

Voyage to the Sunken City is NOW LIVE!

Voyage to the Sunken City is NOW LIVE!

All aboard! Grab your snorkel and your flippers, Voyage to the Sunken City is now live worldwide with 135 new collectible cards, the new Naga minion type, new Colossal and Dredge keywords, sunken treasures, and more!

What’s Included: Naga

The vengeful Naga are Hearthstone’s newest minion type. Naga are drawn to magic and tend to have stronger effects if you cast spells while they watch from your hand.

What’s Included: Colossal Minions

Colossal minions are so big, they don’t fit on one card! Minions with the Colossal keyword come with additional appendages that synergize with the minion’s main body. Those appendages are part of the Colossal minion, so they are summoned whenever the main body is summoned, even if it was not played from hand. Each class has its own Legendary Colossal Minion in Voyage to the Sunken City .

What’s Included: Dredge and Sunken Treasures

Dredge is a new keyword that lets you look at the bottom cards of your deck and choose one to bubble up to the top. Azsharan cards are cards that put a more powerful “Sunken” copy of themselves on the bottom of your deck. Use Dredge to find that pivotal removal spell, that key combo piece, or your powerful Sunken treasures!

Hearthstone Voyage to the Sunken City trailer has audio description

A new Hearthstone cinematic trailer for the upcoming Voyage to the Sunken City expansion is also available with audio description.

Blizzard’s first audio described trailer has been published and it’s for a new Hearthstone expansion coming next month. As noted by senior UX researcher Nikki Crenshaw , the game has seen “a lot” of new fans joining the community since Hearthstone Access , a mod that makes the game accessible for players who use screen-readers, launched last year.

The trailer teases the lore behind the upcoming expansion for the free-to-play digital card game by Blizzard and will find players searching for powerful sunken treasures, sea monsters, and discovering a lost ancient city.

Watch #AudioDescription Voyage to the Sunken City Cinematic Trailer on YouTube

Hearthstone features lead Chadd Nervig, detailed on Twitter that improving Hearthstone’s accessibility is a goal that the team “is actively working on.” Activision Blizzard has been implementing accessibility into its games with an update to World of Warcraft last year that saw text-to-speech implemented for messages. The same featrue was implemented into Diablo 2: Resurrected along with other improvements to the remaster .

For audio description, YouTube looks to be rolling out a multi-audio track feature that was previously first used by Ubisoft with Assassin’s Creed: Valhalla. The feature will allow the creator to upload multiple audio tracks for a single trailer, in this example, having an audio described audio track available on a main trailer.

Hearthstone is available on PC with Voyage to the Sunken City being available on April 12, 2022.

General Information

  • Release Date – April 12, 2022
  • 135 New Cards  – Reveal Schedule Here!

New Keyword/Mechanic – Dredge

New keyword/mechanic – colossal minions, new minion type – nagas.

  • Two Pre-Purchase Tiers – $49.99 and $79.99

Cinematic Trailer

Announcement Video

Dredge is a new keyword/mechanic that works a bit similarly to Scry from Magic: The Gathering, but in reverse. Instead of looking at the cards from the top of your deck with  the ability to send them to the bottom – you look at bottom 3 cards from your deck and have the ability to send one of them to the top. The card you pick will – of course – be the next card you draw.

voyage to the sunken city cinematic trailer

Dredge mechanic will be a great way to control your draws and ensure the highest chance of getting what you need. Not only it gives you knowledge of what you will draw next, but also of the cards that you WON’T draw because they’re at the bottom.

What’s important is that there are also cards that are synergistic with Dredge. Some of the new cards will have the ability to “sink” a card to the bottom of your deck, which you can then retrieve with Dredge. It should lead to some really interesting shenanigans and planning ahead.

Voyage to the Sunken City expansion also features a new mechanic called “Colossal”. Colossal minions come in a few parts – main one + appendages. It doesn’t matter if you play them directly from your hand or summon them through any means, they split into the board (e.g. Colossal +3 will summon the original minion and 3 appendages, so 4 minions in total).

voyage to the sunken city cinematic trailer

The main minion often has some kind of synergies with its extra parts, possibly forcing the opponent into some tough decisions regarding removals.

It’s been a while since Hearthstone has got a new minion type. Technically one was added exactly a year ago, in Forged in the Barrens. But Quilboars didn’t have any specific synergies in Constructed and were mostly added for the sake of Battlegrounds. This time, however, Nagas should be a full-fledged minion type with its own Constructed synergies.

voyage to the sunken city cinematic trailer

Naga are spell-focused minion type that usually give you some sort of bonus for playing spells while you’re holding a Naga minion in your hand.

Pre-Purchase

Once again, we’ll have two different pre-order bundles. You can get the bundles here. Here’s what they include and how much they cost:

Voyage to the Sunken City Pre-Purchase Bundle ($49.99)

Hey there! Just a note: The visual card list always gets ‘destroyed’ in Chrome when there’s an add banner inbetween the shown cards. Then, almost all of those cards (under one group, like all Mage cards if there’s a banner in that section) are shown very tiny (like 10 x 20 pixels) and thus are unreadable.

Don’t know if I’m the only one with that problem but maybe it’s fixable!?

Nonetheless, thanks for all your work!

voyage to the sunken city cinematic trailer

warlock’s clossal image is not fixed in deck builder

Now I see it’s the banner indeed. So yes you’re not the only one. I’m using Chrome as well.

Seems like it’s already fixed. Wow!

No it isn’t, same exp on an iPad.

Yeah you’re right, seems I got lucky. There are 2 kinds of ads; one has the width of a card (works fine), the other is very wide and that’s the one that ‘kills’ the correct view of the cards.

Would be nice to have some portrait badges update. I want to pick Ambasador Faelin as my new one.

Wait what? All Naga characters are females? Weird. If anyone plays Warcraft 3 FT, there’s plenty of Naga males.

Blizzard would absolutely make every character female if they could, smh lol

voyage to the sunken city cinematic trailer

We have a bunch of male Naga: Coilskar Commander, Raj Naz’jan, Wrathspine Enchanter, Blackscale Brute, Naga Giant (I think male? maybe?), Slithering Deathscale, Crushclaw Enforcer

(Maybe they weren’t revealed when you wrote that comment yet though,)

voyage to the sunken city cinematic trailer

I suggest this expansion to be super minion heavy. All classes get minions that summon minions. Prolly everyone got tired of self playing questlines based on spells.

voyage to the sunken city cinematic trailer

Hello Stonekeep, I think there’s been a slight mixup in the cards. Miracle Growth (Druid) appears in the Demon Hunter section. Not a problem at all but thought I’d let you know!

I updated it a few days ago but forgot to reply. Thanks for the comment though! 🙂

So, here’s my take on this new expansion. Colossal, good mechanic, won’t be interrupted by tech cards like Dirty Rat and the like, although I still don’t know how it works when someone get Colossal minion by Evolve or Copy effect. Probably gonna see some tech cards that can increase Colossal X token.

Dredge, not really good. The idea of dredge is to draw a card from the bottom. In order for this to be an effective bottom draw, is to manually put something on the bottom 1st and that takes planning time. Comparing this to effect like Spellburst or Frenzy, or even tutor card, or even Polkett effeck, where it’s faster.

New tribe Naga, it would be good if they actually print a lot of Naga synergies. But in fact, new tribe like Naga and Quillboar doesn’t have that much synergies like the old tribes (Beast, Murlocs etc). It can be good, but it’ll take maybe another year to accumulate more synergies.

New Mega Bundle probably keeps including Merc Packs. Can’t complain there, since it’s doesn’t reduce the value from previous M.Bundle.

Love the flavor of this expansion and am excited to see the rest of the colossal cards! Really cool to see a new take on legendary cards.

Hmmm revealing most of the expansion, and then doing a final reveal(perhaps all cards for an unannounced class) along w/ the 2022 theme + core set changes. Just baseless speculation – but this would be one way to introduce monk…

I suspect that a new class would be announced immediately, to maximize the amount of hype. And I seem to remember Iskar saying the next class was a while off.

Also, I don’t think there is an overriding theme for this year. Three separate, fairly independent expansions.

I thought so too, but then they said “tie in to this Hearthstone year’s theme” at the end of their reveal post.

If they’re going to introduce, it would either be at the very beginning(like we saw for demon hunter) or the very end. Tying together the final reveal and Hearthstone year announcement is unusual timing, but would make sense if introducing a new class

Voyage to the Sunken City - Queen Azshara Returns in Hearthstone

The search for zin-azshari, colossal minions and dredge keyword, queen azshara and the naga - an addition long overdue, this voyage is an homage, comment by readiit.

No Kapp Nazjatar is one of the best designed zones in the game from an immersion/art standpoint.

Comment by Dexstar09

Nazjatar music is so beautiful especially when you go to the area where the Highborne ghosts wanders around.

Comment by Nymrohd

I love the idea of Colossals tied with Naz'jatar. I really wish Naz'jatar had more world bosses that looked like massive sea beasts because that fits the underwater fantasy as well as how Sassz'ine introduced us to a talented Sea Witch. Hope one of the other two expacs is Pandaria and brings the monk.

Comment by pawpurr

tbh I think they missed the boat not doing more of this in WoW, the underwater zones and queen azshara storyline are tight as $%^&. If BFA had her as the main villain instead of N'Zoth I don't think anyone would have been upset. Hearthstone always gets the real dev passion though :) :(

Comment by Dorkfishes

Sounds like a Blizzard employee wrote this, is this a wowhead article or a blue post?

Comment by Arakara

Ah so Hearthstone is the true Seat of Power Azshara was talking about, eh?

Comment by Illanyss

While following some links on this article I became aware of one thing about one of the whispers of Il'gynoth and the ones of N'zoth: The five keys to light their master's way, the five lights! They're not 5 of the same type of thing! We (the character/hero) are one of the keys, the dagger Xal'atath was in is another key, Odin (the lord of ravens) have or will have something that counts as a key and there should be two more keys. And, think, they might not be objects at all! They could be events! In fact, if the next WoW expansion is really Dragonflight, the Aspects will be trying to get something to get their power/immortality back and that is one of the keys as well! -gasps- THAT LEAVES ONLY ONE KEY UNIDENTIFIED!

Comment by hobbidaggy

We have the stone now and that was keeping the water at bay.

Comment by ChunkyCoffee

While World of Warcraft players look up to the skies in hopes of a Dragon-centric expansion Personally I am looking towards the veiled and forbidding seas, but I'm sure Blizzard will just throw a dart at a blank part of the map and go "HEY THE ISLANDS WERE HERE THE WHOLE TIME, NEAT HUH?" Instead of finally having us go to the seas where every single expedition has failed and none return. If all people in Azeroth flat out to refuse to go there, and those that do never come back, how can anyone claim nothing is there? The idea that it's an unexplored (successfully) part of the world full of danger just makes me think that there's a definite source for all that danger. One of these days they'll have to clear up what is beyond those two seas and actually put something there, and I'm afraid the gamestate will be too damaged for me to want to even see it by then.

I love that trailer, nice Daft Punk vibe, there.

Critic Reviews for Hearthstone: Voyage to the Sunken City

A good expansion that, however, needed an incisive external help to show what it is capable of. The course of the New Year of the Hydra is now correct, but the first few days made more than one player tremble.

It took decisive help from the dev's nerf and a bit of patience from the fans, but in the end Voyage to the Sunken City managed to find a good and healthy balance. Hopefully its interesting mechanics bide well for the rest of the Year of the Hydra.

Our judgment for the moment is positive, albeit with some reservations.

We are thrilled to have once again provided the art and illustrations for another exciting Hearthstone cinematic trailer. Grab your wetsuits and brace yourselves for "Voyage to the Sunken City," a Hearthstone expansion from Blizzard that delves into the mesmerizing depths of Zin-Azshari, the submerged ruins of the ancient night elf capital within the Kaldorei Empire (for those clued up on their World of Warcraft lore!).

voyage to the sunken city cinematic trailer

Behind the scenes, many talented teams join forces to create these polished productions. And speaking of talented individuals, our brilliant artists play a pivotal role in the process. It begins with a storyboard and initial direction from the Blizzard team, setting the stage for a collaborative effort involving up to seven skilled artists, overseen by our dedicated project managers and art directors.

voyage to the sunken city cinematic trailer

One of our greatest benefits is that many of our artists have previously worked on Hearthstone; on card art, game boards and other cinematics. Their understanding of the game's distinctive visual style is an invaluable asset, enabling us to achieve a consistent look throughout all of the illustrated shots we provide. Each illustration is incredibly complex and with layered elements so that it can be 2.5D animated.

“I was really excited when I first saw the colour keys for this project. They were so moody and evocative, so was quite easy to get into the right frame of mind to paint it. What I love the most about working on any of the cinematics is seeing the final product of the combined effort from us as a team as well as all the other teams involved in the process. I’m always surprised by the results!” Mattia Rangoni, Concept Artist

voyage to the sunken city cinematic trailer

There's something truly magical about watching our illustrations come alive through the incredible animations and magnificent music. The ongoing collaboration between our artists and Blizzard’s cinematic team ensures that our illustrations blend seamlessly with the Hearthstone universe, delivering unforgettable visuals. So hold your breath as we dive down into the forgotten world of Zin-Azshari...
