Tour de Suisse 2023 Route stage 5: Fiesch - La Punt

The riders hit the Furka Pass after 23 kilometres. It’s a 16.5 kilometres climb at 6.4% to an elevation of 2,433 metres above sea level. The Furka is the highest point of the Tour de Suisse.

The riders fly down into Andermatt and tackle the Oberalppass straight away. The second climb of the day is 10.7 kilometres long and averages 5.5%.

A descent of roughly 50 kilometres precedes the ascent up the Abula Pass. The first 7 kilometres are, at over 8%, the steepest. The route continues to climb for another 10.4 kilometres, while the average gradient of the entire climb sits at 6.8%.

There are still 9.5 kilometres left on the summit. Which is all on descent.

Rui Costa outsprinted Bauke Mollema and Tejay van Garderen ten years ago in La Punt, while Domenico Pozzovivo soloed to victory in 2017.

There are still 9.5 kilometres left to race at the summit. Which is all on descent.

Starting at kilometer 195.2 – or, 6 kilometres before the summit of the Abula Pass -, the Golden Kilometre serves two opportunities to gain time bonuses of 3, 2 and 1 seconds. The first three riders on the line take 10, 6 and 4 seconds.

PREVIEW | Tour de Suisse 2023 stage 5 - Yellow jersey battle continues among Evenepoel, Skjelmose and Gall

Preview . Perhaps the queen stage of the race, stage 5 of the Tour de Suisse will be a proper Alpine day, filled with tough ascents, high altitude and a downhill finish which is well known to the riders.

The final mountain stage. It's the third consecutive tough day in the race and possibly a decisive one. Three passes, but the attacks will come late on. The Albulapass' summit is over 2000 meters in altitude and it's a proper long and steep climb. At the end of a whole 211 kilometers the finale into La Punt should decide a lot in the race.

Departure and arrival times (estimated CET):

- June 15 - Stage 5: Fiesch - La Punt, 211km. From 10:43 a.m. to 4:35 p.m.

Felix Gall turns Tour de Suisse on it's head as he wins stage 4 with long-range attack and takes over yellow jersey

PREVIEW | Tour de Suisse 2023 stage 5 - Yellow jersey battle continues among Evenepoel, Skjelmose and Gall

It's a real high-mountain day, although two of it's climbs are in the opening third of the stage. Nevertheless, at any point the Furkapass will cause damage, having it's summit at over 2400 meters of altitude with 16.5 kilometers at 6.4%.

The descent will then lead the riders into the Oberalpass which is 10.7 kilometers at 5.6%. It will set up some more fatigue, to be honest it won't likely have much of an impact on the racing itself throughout the day. The riders descent into a long valley run and then gradually build up towards the decisive climb of the day.

Prize Money 2023 Tour de Suisse €130,100 on offer for teams

PREVIEW | Tour de Suisse 2023 stage 5 - Yellow jersey battle continues among Evenepoel, Skjelmose and Gall

Another long one. This is a different finale to those of previous days, the Albulapass ends with just 9.5 kilometers to go before a straight finish into La Punt. The gaps at the top are most likely those at the finish line after a very fast descent.

The climb itself is 18.5 kilometers at 6.6%, it features two sections where the gradients are at a regular 9/10% in it's first half. It then gets more constant in it's final kilometers but at around 7% gaps can always be created. It's a difficult one, the altitude will be key as well with over 2300 meters at the summit, it's a matter of pacing and managing it very well.

The Weather

PREVIEW | Tour de Suisse 2023 stage 5 - Yellow jersey battle continues among Evenepoel, Skjelmose and Gall

The wind will come from the north, covered in the Albulapass, however if it is felt it comes as a crosswind. Not directly preventing attacks on the final climb, however it can make for difficulties attacking if the gusts of wind become strong - which is not assured, I point out.

The Favourites

Felix Gall - Gall's job is mostly done. Unfortunately for him, the losses he sustained in the TT on the opening day mean that despite his great form the GC win is unlikely. He'll have a defensive role here I would imagine, however if he has the same legs he should surely attack. I don't know if he can handle these long ascents as well, but his win today and the inevitable strong GC mean there won't be too much pressure.

Mattias Skjelmose - Skjelmose put in a very tactical and risky ride today, he's got good form and is handling the climbs, here on this long ascent he can just pace it out and not worry about attacks. It'll be a test, I don't know how well he'll deal with the different type of terrain and altitude, but stage 3 has shown that at least until 25-minute efforts he remains just as strong as you'd imagine.

Remco Evenepoel - Evenepoel has decent legs, not his best form but good enough to win the race, and good enough to win this stage. The long climbs, specially the final one, will suit his style. When it comes to the GC he sits only 16 seconds away from Gall and 14 from Skjelmose, on paper he is currently the man to beat for the yellow jersey so he has no need to attack. A conservative day, but today he showed signs that he has the legs to win currently.

2023 Tour de Suisse. Race Center - TV, Startlist, Profile & Previews

The high altitude and longer passes will make for a more difficult challenge then previous days. This may not suit all riders, whilst it can benefit others who prefer this terrain. Colombians Rigoberto Urán and Harold Tejada will be interesting to follow as they'll be in ideal conditions.

The GC fight has been quite open and with several cards to play for the podium or possibly even higher. Pello Bilbao , Wilco Kelderman , Cian Uijtdebroeks and Romain Bardet have all looked good and will all stand chances here, as they fight for GC and stage simultaneously. The likes of Juan Ayuso , Ion Izagirre and Sylvain Moniquet should also be up there in the fight.

The breakaway also stands chances on the day, albeit I recon they're somewhat low. Some brilliant climbers have not had their legs here, if they do happen to give it a go and have a good day however they can take the win here such as Neilson Powless , Sergio Higuita and Jakob Fuglsang . Gino Mäder and Mattia Cattaneo will also be options for this scenario.

Prediction Tour de Suisse 2023 stage 5:

*** Felix Gall, Remco Evenepoel ** Mattias Skjelmose, Wilco Kelderman, Pello Bilbao * Romain Bardet, Cian Uijjtdebroeks, Rigoberto Urán, Harold Tejada, Sylvain Moniquet, Neilson Powless

Pick : Remco Evenepoel

Commentary David Loosli

The opening stage will be a difficult one for the cyclists. It could even be considered the Queen Stage. Even though it is just under 60 kilometres long, there are still over 1,500 meters of altitude to climb. The circle of favourites for the overall victory already narrows here as only the best climbers will have a chance of overall victory.

Tour de Suisse 2024 route

The eight-day stage race in Switzerland features two time trials and almost 18,000 metres of climbing

Maps and profiles of the 2024 Tour de Suisse

Stage 8: Aigle - Villars-sur-Ollon (ITT), 15.7km

The Tour de Suisse returns in 2024 with the shortest edition in the race's history in terms of distance but as tough as ever with nearly the same amount of climbing as last year packed into eight stages.

A year after the tragic death of Gino Mäder , who crashed on the descent from the Albula pass, the entire region around the site of his fall is absent from the route.

Instead, the race begins in Vaduz and traverses the centre of Switzerland from north to south before a trip west for the final two stages around Villars-sur-Ollon.

The race will include two time trials and four mountain summit stage finishes, making for a tough week covering 948.9 kilometres and 19,000 metres of climbing.

"Only the best mountain riders will be able to have their say for the overall victory. However, different types of riders will be possible for stage victories," says Tour director Olivier Senn.

Stage 1: Vaduz - Vaduz, 4.8km

Maps and profiles of the 2024 Tour de Suisse

The Tour de Suisse starts with a short time trial in Vaduz, just 4.8 kilometres long and pan-flat. The stage will most likely not be a major factor for the general classification but instead, gives the sprinters and power riders a chance to take the lead before the race heads into the high mountains.

Stage 2: Vaduz - Regensdorf, 177.9km

Maps and profiles of the 2024 Tour de Suisse

The second day of racing is a punchy course, leaving Vaduz and heading to Regensdorf. Although it's just 177.9 kilometres, it's the longest stage of the 2024 Tour de Suisse. With three classified ascents and 2,400 metres of climbing, it will give the mountain goats a chance to warm up their legs after the explosive effort on the opening stage but ultimately could end up in a bunch sprint.

Stage 3: Steinmaur - Rüschlikon, 161.9km

Maps and profiles of the 2024 Tour de Suisse

Stage 3 of the 2024 Tour de Suisse heads from Steinmaur to Rüschlikon and, aside from stage 1, is the flattest of the week and one suited to the sprinters even if it climbs almost 2,000 metres. There is a short climb ending with 10km to go and a quick descent and an uphill drag to the line.

Stage 4: Rüschlikon - San Gottardo, 170.5km

Maps and profiles of the 2024 Tour de Suisse

The roads begin to reach into the thousands of metres in altitude on stage 4 of the 2024 Tour de Suisse. After a relatively flat first 140 kilometres, the race heads up the only climb of the day, the undulating Gotthard Pass from the Schöllenen gorge side to the north, a 13.2km test at an average of 7% grade.

Stage 5: Ambri - Cari, 148.8km

Maps and profiles of the 2024 Tour de Suisse

Stage 5 gives riders an out-and-back route of 148.8km from Ambri to Cari, starting with a loop around Ambri that takes in the Altanca ascent almost from the flag drop and offers little respite before the first ascent of the mountain to Cari, coming from the western side. Riders then descend past the finish line and race toward Biasca and complete a flat loop through Gorduno before coming back the way they came to summit Cari from the eastern side.

With double-digit gradients and an average of 8%, it's a major test for the GC contenders, especially at the end of a short stage with 3,200 metres of climbing.

Stage 6: Locarno - Blatten-Belalp, 151.2km

Maps and profiles of the 2024 Tour de Suisse

More mountains meet the riders on stage 6 with the highest point of the 2024 Tour de Suisse coming on the mid-stage Nufenenpass from Airolo and ascending to over 2,400 metres in altitude. Also known as the Passo della Novenà, it's a beast of a climb - 24.1km long and averaging 5.5% - but only the warm up for the 7km final ascent to Blatten at the end of the 151.2km stage.

Stage 7: Villars-sur-Ollon - Villars-sur-Ollon, 118.7km

Maps and profiles of the 2024 Tour de Suisse

Stage 7 is very short and will be a free-for-all starting on the Col de la Croix out of the gates, and covering the climb a second time mid-stage before ending at Villars-sur-Ollon partway up the third ascent. The climb itself is 18.5km long and averages 6.8% and makes up most of the day. The riders will be very familiar with each switchback by the time they reach the finish after 118.7 kilometres and 3,070 metres of climbing.

Maps and profiles of the 2024 Tour de Suisse

As if the riders hadn't gone up the Croix enough, the final stage time trial uses a piece of the course from stage 7, heading from the UCI headquarters in Aigle back up to Villars-sur-Ollon covering 15.7km and 879 metres of climbing. It's a sting in the tail after a week packed with ascending.
