Top Shopping Destinations to Love

best shopping travel destinations

Do you consider shopping fun? Whether you have post-wedding cash to spend, simply enjoy browsing, or want a getaway most females will love, include time to shop on vacation.

America's best shopping spots are destinations in themselves. They remind us what we miss when shopping online: Personal service, the ability to feel and try on garments before buying, serendipitous unadvertised sales. Since you can't spend all your vacation time shopping, each place below is near a great place to visit.

Shopping California: Rodeo Drive - Beverly Hills

 TripSavvy / Maritsa Patrinos

Synonymous with Hollywood style and mega-budgets, Rodeo Drive was immortalized in the film Pretty Woman as an ultra-snobby place where sales clerks' hauteur melts at the flash of cash. While few budgets can afford a trinket from Tiffany, Cartier, Van Cleef & Arpels, or Harry Winston, glittery Rodeo Drive is incomparable for window shopping and people-watching. For a wider array of more-affordable retail, visit South Coast Plaza in Costa Mesa on your LA vacation.

Shopping Nevada: Las Vegas

Las Vegas News Bureau/LVCVA.

Big winners and big spenders mingle on vacation in Las Vegas. The Fashion Show Mall, a cornucopeia of retail conveniently located in the middle of the Las Vegas Strip, offers the largest selection. It has 250 stores and restaurants. A good portion of the retail is high-end; Saks Fifth Avenue, Neiman Marcus, and Nevada's only Nordstrom store are located here.

Another shopping destination not to be missed is the recently expanded Caesars Forum Shops (pictured), which recreate Rome as it never was.

Shopping New York: Madison Avenue, NYC

While tourists flock to Fifth Avenue and its commercial landmarks such as Tiffany & Co. and Saks are certainly must-sees true shopping aficionados on vacation head straight for Madison Avenue, from 57th Street up to 72nd. Here the world's best designers, including Armani, Dior, Donna Karan, Etro, Prada, Ralph Lauren, and others display their wares in exquisite boutiques. Don't have all day to shop? The Barneys flagship is located on East 61st.

Shopping New York: Woodbury Common - Woodbury

Every designer mentioned above has an outlet store in Woodbury Common, which is one hour north of New York City. This mega outlet mall goes way beyond the usual suspects to feature brands not normally found at discount: Tse cashmeres, Judith Leiber bags, Donald J Pliner shoes, Eileen Fisher apparel, and yes, even Prada (hint: it's located with Miu-Miu inside a store named Space). Neiman-Marcus Last Call and Saks Off Fifth are worthy anchors.

Shopping Florida: Sawgrass Mills - Sunrise

If you believe bigger is better, you'll appreciate 350-store Sawgrass Mall. One drawback for serious shoppers on vacation is that it attracts lots of families with strollers and young kids to navigate around. The newly opened and more upscale Colonnade Outlets at Sawgrass features upscale brands including Ferragamo, David Yurman, and Burberry at discount. But for true shopping splendor, nothing beats Worth Avenue in Palm Beach.

Shopping Massachusetts: Newbury Street - Boston

There are no temperature-controlled, indoor malls for the hardy New England shoppers of Newbury Street. And there aren't many bargains to be found, either. But quality hounds on vacation appreciate this elegant throwback. The street retains its carriage-trade aura and features many jewelers, silversmiths, antiquaires, and Boston originals including the always-dapper Louis, Boston .

Shopping Minnesota: Mall of America - Minneapolis

Grand-daddy of USA mega-malls, the 520-store Mall of America was showing its age the last time I visited. Its Chapel of Love outside Bloomingdale's offers a way to get married without taking valuable time away from the serious business of shopping on vacation. With attractions that include Underwater Adventures Aquarium, LEGO Imagination Center, Dinosaur Walk Museum, Flight Simulation, and NASCAR Silicon Motor Speedway, this mall attracts many, many families with kids.

Shopping Virginia - Tysons Corner

The Tysons Corner retail megalopolis off I-495 consists of multiple shopping centers. These include the 125-store Galleria that boasts its own Ritz-Carlton Hotel, the 230-store Tysons Corner Center , and Fairfax Square . Just about 15 minutes from Washington, DC, Tysons Corner is a destination that serious shoppers on vacation can get happily lost in for days.

Shopping South Carolina: Charleston - King Street

This gracefully curving street is a fine place to wander and window shop on vacation but do it early in the day, as Charleston weather can get steamy. There's a Saks Fifth Avenue on the corner, a Starbucks, Abercrombie & Fitch, and numerous antiques stores. When it gets too hot, duck into the air-conditioned Shops at Charleston Place Hotel , where conservative dressers outfit themselves with duds from the likes of Lacoste, St. John, and Talbots.

Shopping Texas: The Shops at La Cantera - San Antonio

Although The Galleria in Houston is that city's no. 1 tourist vacation destination and the fourth-largest mall in America, San Antonio's Shops at La Cantera is a hipper, open-air marketplace. Its merchants include Nordstrom, Sephora, Abercrombie & Fitch, BCBG/Max Azria, Juicy Couture, Betsey Johnson, and many more well-known brands.

World's best shopping destinations: The guide to what to buy where

Although online delivery means now we can get most things from all over the world, there’s still magic to be had in shopping overseas, and that purchase you make somewhere special is guaranteed to remain a favourite.

Forget vive la France, it’s vive le shopping in Paris, as the city celebrates the art form.

“What is everyone queueing for?” I asked my taxi driver on arrival in the fashion capital of the world last month. It was the first time I had returned since lockdowns and I was intrigued about why there were people everywhere, patiently waiting behind red velvet ropes.

“Shopping,” he stated, giving a Gallic shrug.

Everyone knows Parisians dress well – just ask  Emily in Paris  – but the city has definitely shifted a gear, despite global downturns. Designer stores dominate – their glass fronts lining the Champs-Élysées.

I splurged on French skincare, raiding  la pharmacie  in the hope I’d get a little French glow-to-go, but I was foolishly frugal when it came to fashion. Before I left, one of my friends reminded me to treat myself, saying, “You always regret it when you get home.” I didn’t and I did; I should have bought those shoes.

Visitors outside the Chanel store on Champs-Elysees, Paris.

Although online delivery means now we can get most things from all over the world, there’s still magic to be had in shopping overseas, and that purchase you make somewhere special is guaranteed to remain a favourite. Every time you wear or use it, you remember your trip and the sights, smells and sensation when you bought it.

Years ago, I splashed out on a Diane von Furstenberg suit from Barneys in New York, and although the store and the job I bought it for have long gone, the suit remains one of my best buys and travel memories.

But it’s not just fashion. Chefs and home cooks know that to achieve samurai status in the kitchen, they must visit Kappabashi Street in Tokyo, where craftsmen of the sharpest blades sell their wares.

The beauty-obsessed know that South Korea’s capital, Seoul, has the most forward-thinking skincare brands in the world. Yes, K-beauty is just as big, if not bigger than K-Pop.

Turn your next stopover into a shopover, with our guide to what to buy where.

The iconic Louis Vuitton building on the Champs-Elysees, Paris.

Best for designer chic and skincare

Wandering around Paris, you can’t help but admire the effortless chic of the Parisians, who somehow manage to make scoffing a baguette look stylish.

Visitors can easily get lost in the eclectic charm of cobbled streets in Le Marais where trendy boutiques sit alongside galleries, kosher restaurants and gay bars. Or the glamorous people-watching that’s impossible to ignore while sipping  un café  on the Champs-Élysées.

There are two things you’ll want to spend your euros on here and they are designer goods and skincare. Walk around Louis Vuitton Maison Champs-Élysées, the largest LV store in the world, and Dior’s new concept store, 30 Avenue Montaigne, which includes a permanent fashion exhibition, La Galerie Dior. Well worth the queue – it’s simply magical.

For a real fashion buzz, visit during Fashion Week, every February-March and September-October, or the couture shows in January and July when the streets are alive with outrageous ensembles.

At the other end of the scale, don’t leave without visiting  la pharmacie  and sorting out your skincare with inexpensive products French women swear by, such as La Roche-Posay and Nuxe.

Carnaby Street is one of London's essential shopping zones.

Best for high street buys

Don’t bypass a visit to the world’s most expensive department store, Harrods, on Brompton Road in Knightsbridge. It’s not too far from the Ritz Hotel where you could spend your spare quids on a lavish high tea, where royalty, playwrights and Hollywood have sipped, before browsing the eight floors of luxury items.

For those on more of a budget, London is High Street heaven. Mid-range clothes are what this city does well and you can find some lovely quality labels in fail-safe places such as Carnaby Street and in department stores Selfridges and John Lewis on Oxford Street, which can be accessed by the Tube or a double-decker bus ride for that true tourist experience.

Cool Britannia’s capital is also home to quaint shopping districts such as Covent Garden, Marylebone Village and King’s Road where you can find British brands like Barbour, Ghost, Hobbs, Reiss, Joules, LK Bennett, Whistles and The White Company.

Interestingly, British designer brands are also stocking preloved items – Mulberry has second-hand bags in its stores, as does Selfridges. The biggest sales are in January and June-July.

Handbag shopping at Gucci in Rome.

Best for bags and shoes

When in Rome… you’ll be mostly salivating at window displays of leather shoes and bags, which is part of the fun of visiting. In fact, in all of Italy, leather goods are crafted like nowhere else in the world. From high-end designer labels such as Gucci and Prada to the handmade bags and shoes of Fausto Santini, this is a leather lover’s paradise – particularly if you make your way to Via Francesco Crispi, near the Trevi Fountain, where leather stores are lined up and overflowing with bags, gloves, jackets and shoes in multiple colours and styles that will last a lifetime.

Shopping at Istanbul's Grand Bazaar.

Best for the Grand Bazaar

Since 1461, traders have sold their wares in the world’s largest covered marketplace, which is home to some 4000 shops.

Its arcaded streets and laneways are impossible to traverse without getting lost, but this is all part of the fun. Bright-coloured lanterns loom overhead, enthusiastic carpet-sellers beckon you with woven textiles crafted through storytelling, and handpainted ceramics and earthenware stand out as the perfect gift for loved ones.

For the more adventurous, perhaps a Turkish nargile (water pipe) or jewellery set with semi-precious stones would make the ideal souvenir. Be sure to haggle over the price, and sip a mint tea while deciding which flavour of Turkish delight to pack in your carry-on. I still wear – and love – my silver bangle from here, years later.

Shopping at the Dubai Mall.

Best for gold and malls

There’s a reason Dubai is known as the City of Gold – the Gold Souk is a traditional marketplace in the area of Deira and it features hundreds of gold jewellery and gemstone retailers. Gleaming and glistening as far as the eye can see, this is beyond any other jewellery shopping experience you will ever have and it’s where you will find unique gold trinkets at negotiated prices.

The most authentic way to get there is by crossing the Dubai Creek on an abra – a water taxi whose name means “to cross”. This short ride gives you a sense of what this city was like when it was but a tiny pearl-trading port. The creek is still a bustling trading zone where you’ll pass by wooden dhows and merchants bustling between the nearby spice and textile souks.

It’s a rare cultural shopping experience compared with the city’s massive malls like the Dubai Mall, which includes an aquarium and the Mall of the Emirates – where you can ski on an indoor slope.

SoHo is one of New York's top shopping destinations.

Best for department stores

Anyone in New York for a few days should always schedule in time for shopping. Although the city is full of cool boutiques, there’s still a special Big Apple thrill in wandering around its famous department stores, from Macy’s to Saks Fifth Avenue, Bloomingdale’s to Bergdorf Goodman and FAO Schwarz toy shop, now in the Rockefeller Center.

From the hustle and bustle of yellow cab-filled streets, sidewalk hustlers and endless sirens, shoppers can get respite with collections of every designer in the one place and frequently on sale.

For cooler finds, head to the boutiques of SoHo where famous cobbled zones such as Prince, Greene and Spring streets house everything from stores like Rag and Bone and Acne Studios to the Moma Design Store.

Honolulu's Ala Moana Center is the world's largest outdoor shopping mall.

Best for outlet shopping

Another great shopover, for those heading to the US, is Hawaii. Thanks to “Hawaii pricing”, big brands are cheaper here, so it’s the next best thing to flying to Europe.

Wander around the world’s largest open-air shopping centre, Ala Moana Center, which has all the designer names, or Kalakaua Avenue, Oahu’s Fifth Ave.

The biggest sales occur around Memorial Day weekend in May and Black Friday in November.

But for real bargains, take a shuttle bus from your hotel to Waikele Premium Outlets, which has brands including Armani, Calvin Klein, Kate Spade and Polo Ralph Lauren for a fraction of regular retail prices. You can join its VIP club for extra deals. You might not feel like shopping on a beach break, but trust us, you’ll regret not snapping up a bargain.

The Grove shopping centre in Los Angeles.

LOS ANGELES

Best for street style.

If stopping over in LA, you can head to Rodeo Drive for your  Pretty Woman  tourist moment, but the city is also renowned for its cool street style. There are lots of outdoor retail centres, such as Platform in Culver City and The Grove in Fairfax District. Look out for celebrity-approved Reformation and arty Just One Eye in the Sycamore District. For vintage finds, visit American Rag Cie and the Melrose Trading Post Flea Market in Fairfax High School every Sunday. It’s here you’ll find one-of-a-kind pieces that will remind you of LA forever.

Ion Orchard in Singapore's famous Orchard Road shopping district.

Best for mall shopping

King of the shopovers is Singapore, which has so many air-conditioned malls, you only need stagger a few steps from your hotel to find one. They also house much of the country’s entertainment and amazing restaurants, too. You can buy everything here, from Chanel and Louis Vuitton in Ngee Ann City to Uniqlo in Ion Orchard. Don’t discount stores like Zara – they have different stock to Australia. My Singapore Zara jacket is still a classic. Check out hip stores Actually and Surrender for unique buys. It’s not all fashion; Singapore is a great place to buy electronics, too. You’ll find the best bargains in September-October.

The 10 Best Holiday Shopping Destinations in the World (And Where to Stay)

author image

See recent posts by Jane Reynolds

Black Friday is quickly approaching. Prepare yourself. While this day is famous for holiday music and amazing deals, it's infamous for long lines and crazed shoppers who seem to need that last toy on the shelf just a little too badly -- and there's no way their kid was better than yours in 2014! But while we may advise avoiding leaving your hotel room on this hectic day, we TOTALLY recommend exploring some of the world's best shopping destinations during your holiday travels. Here we bring you the list of the top 10 holiday shopping destinations around the globe, and the shopper-friendly hotel to stay in for each. Happy hunting!

New York City

Where do we even start? New York City is a shopper’s paradise, and we mean every kind of shopper: Time Warner Center keeps mall-goers happy, SoHo has boutiques for unique and vintage pieces you won’t find anywhere else, Fifth Avenue is replete with flagships of high-end brands and designers, and Bryant Park and Union Square are home to pop-up holiday shops. You can also find plenty of eats, like hot chocolate and pretzels, at these stands, and Bryant Park boasts an ice-skating rink.

Where to Stay: Bryant Park Hotel

Not surprisingly, this hotel overlooks the park, and is just a few blocks away from the core of Fifth Avenue’s shopping mecca. Plus, it has a sleek, high-design feel with a see-and-be-seen restaurant and a sexy underground bar.

El Rastro Market; Photo Credit: Eduardo Balmaseda

Like NYC, Madrid offers extremely varied shopping, meaning you can take care of everyone on your list in just one short (or long!) trip. Reasonably priced, fashion-forward brands — such as Desigual, MANGO, and Zara — are native to Spain, and can be found throughout the capital city. But if you’re jet-setting off to Madrid, we recommend spending your time in the local markets. Only open on Sundays, El Rastro is the city’s largest flea market. It features locals selling homemade crafts, and there is often live music to accompany your shopping. The Chueca District, on the other hand, is probably the best-known neighborhood for shopping; it’s particularly festive during the holiday season, with plenty of vendors and tourists huddled under cheery strings of lights.

Where to Stay: Room Mate Oscar

The Room Mate chain uses funky, bright design throughout their hotels, and the 75-room Oscar — situated in Chueca — is no different.  Rooms  are quirky with curving furniture, tons of space, flat-screen  TVs , and modern  bathrooms .

Los Angeles

best shopping travel destinations

Hong Kong is a great shopping destination all year-round, and it takes holiday decorations very seriously (in a not-so-serious, “Hello Kitty” kind of way). Massive shopping malls such as Times Square, with 10 floors of luxury brands, put up massive Christmas caricatures; Langham Place, known for it’s more affordable, exclusive-to-Asia shops, does the same, and often incorporates a Hello Kitty theme. For those searching for local, vintage, and artisan wares, we recommend the Jade Market (where you can find, no surprise, gorgeous jade knick-knacks and jewelry), as well as Temple Street Night Market. After dusk, this market comes alive with lights, vendors, fortune tellers, and performers.

Where to Stay: Langham Place, Hong Kong or The Ritz-Carlton, Hong Kong

Both situated in Kowloon, these luxury hotels are great bases for a shopping trip. While Langham Place right next door to the Langham Place shopping complex, the Ritz-Carlton is attached to the Elements Mall, which is home to numerous high-end retail and dining establishments.

Okay, so when you go to London, you have to make a trip to Harrods. This upscale shopping center is world-renowned, and you can make a day of it there — even taking a break from festivities for an elegant tea service in the afternoon. But the city is also replete with holiday markets and pop-up shops come December. The Southbank Centre Christmas Market in Westminster is one of the most festive; each wooden stand resembles a tiny chalet, complete with ribbons and holly, and the market winds along the River Thames. Visitors can feast on tasty local treats while perusing handmade goods. The Winter Wonderland in Hyde Park is perhaps the city’s best-known Christmas market, complete with shops, shows, a skating rink, restaurants, bars, and, of course, the observation wheel.

Where to Stay: Millennium Hotel London Mayfair

This upscale spot is just a couple blocks from Oxford Street, a major shopping thoroughfare, and just a few more from Hyde Park. An award-winning restaurant is a plus, and rates are pretty good for the swanky Mayfair location.

Christkindlmarkt on Rathausplatz; Photo Credit: Brian Colson

Vienna — with its stunning architecture and plethora of snow — looks like a Winter Wonderland for a large portion of the year, but it’s never as festive as it come Christmastime. It has holiday markets galore, and many (such as Schönbrunn and Belvedere) claim beautiful palaces as their backdrops; slightly outside of the city, there’s a Christmas market at Grafenegg castle. But the most popular, with three million visitors annually, is the Christkindlmarkt on Rathausplatz. You may find yourself focusing in on the refreshments — roasted chestnuts, mulled wine, local pastries — but there are plenty of goods to be found as well. Locals sell handmade ornaments, toys, candles, soaps, and more.

Where to Stay: Hotel Rathaus Wein & Design

The modern Hotel Rathaus Wein & Design is actually built inside a restored historic town house in Josefstadt, Vienna’s eighth district. It’s a short walk to the Rathaus Christkindlmarkt, as well as numerous museums. The breakfast buffet gets high marks.

Buenos Aires

The Be Hollywood is a hip, modern boutique hotel located in the lively Palermo Hollywood neighborhood, near fun shopping and dining. The highlight here is the  terrace  where the  pool  and fabulous  views of the city  can be found, and the free breakfast and Wi-Fi add value.

Oh Bej! Oh Bej! Market; Photo Credit: Gloria Chang

Milan is perhaps the most fashionable city in the world; after all, it plays home base to luxury fashion houses such as Prada, Valentino, Armani, Versace, Missoni, Miu Miu, Etro, Dolce & Gabana, and many, many more. The main shopping area is known as the Fashion Quadrangle, where almost all of the previously mentioned labels can be found. During the weeks leading up to Christmas, the city offers even more markets and bazaars for local and luxury goods, the most renowned being the annual Oh Bej! Oh Bej! Christmas market. Over 400 stalls selling gifts, eats, and clothing gather around Castello Sforzesco.

Where to Stay: Bulgari Milano

The super luxurious Bulgari Milano is one of the best places to see and be seen in the fashion scene of Milan, with a price tag to match. An 18th-century renovated mansion on 4,000 square meters of private gardens, the 58-room property is within walking distance of shopping venues like Prada and Gucci yet still manages to feel secluded.

Faneuil Hall Marketplace; Photo Credit: jienni

Similar to the Time Warner Center in NYC (but bigger), Boston’s Prudential Center mall has a little bit of everything (including dining), and always feels festive with lights, decorations, and music during the holiday season. Those looking for a more boutique experience can’t miss Newbury Street, and Faneuil Hall Marketplace is transformed into a winter wonderland, with a Christmas tree, lights, music, and holiday treats like hot cocoa.

Where to Stay: Newbury Guest House or Mandarin Oriental, Boston

These are two very different options, although both are great. While Newbury Guest House provides a cozy, bed-and-breakfast experience right on Newbury Street, the Mandarin is all about luxury — and is attached to the Prudential Center mall, so you don’t even need to brave the cold to hit up the shops.

Whether you’re looking for souvenirs to take back home, hunting special deals at outlet malls, or picking up branded products at the duty-free, shopping is a travel experience that requires its own budget. For some, worldly cities with luxury brands and trendy boutiques are the destinations to visit—the purpose of touching down here revolves around fashion.

Enthusiast shoppers and reluctant buyers both have great options when they are in cities with an exhaustive collection of brand stores, local markets, outlet malls, and designer boutiques. HeyDisocunt.Co.UK has analyzed the 25 top shopping destinations by allocating points out of 10 on the basis of number of shopping locations, number of shops within a mile, number of malls within a mile, number of boutiques within a mile, and number of top designers/retailers in the city.

America's best shopping streets.

America's Best Shopping Streets

Holiday shopping can be stressful, cutthroat and, at its worst, fruitless. Sometimes the journey to the perfect present starts with an hour-long line at the mall parking garage. Talk about frustrating: You can't take your foot off the brake, let alone step into a store. So, we decided to ditch our wheels and take to the streets on foot.

Spotting glamorous couture on waifish mannequins and gawking at this year's holiday window displays are just two of the allures to "on-the-ground" shopping. And these come free of charge. We think picking presents should be fun, so we've searched far and wide for America's best commercial boulevards. Here is what we've found. On these select avenues, stores are deemed historic sites, sidewalks become catwalks and shopping bags equal merit badges.

Southern California winters are nothing short of nirvana. Once you get past the fact that Christmas lights hang atop palm trees instead of pine ones, the snow-less holidays can be quite enjoyable. There's no better way in L.A. (or more specifically, Beverly Hills) to prep for the gift-giving season then to motor your convertible down to Rodeo Drive for some designer duds. This strip of luxury stores is iconic, gorgeous and as pricey as ever. Nearly every big-name designer has an outpost: Chanel, Fendi, Jimmy Choo, Prada, YSL … the list goes on. But can you put a price on living out your "Pretty Woman" fantasy? Yes you can, and the total comes to: astronomical credit card debt.

Michigan Avenue hosts some of Chicago 's most beloved monuments, the Chicago Water Tower, the Art Institute of Chicago , Millennium Park and, of course, the " Magnificent Mile " -- a collection of hundreds of stores and restaurants. The city decorates this wonderful commercial stretch with twinkling lights, while the shops do their part to engineer creative holiday displays in their windows. We admit that strolling Michigan Avenue in Chi-Town's bitter cold conditions can be a challenge, but most shoppers don't mind retreating into department stores like Neiman Marcus and Nordstrom to warm up.

It's a hard to be glamorous wearing a parka (just ask those Minnesotans). But in New England, there's one premier place to go to learn how to look trendy while staying warm -- Boston 's Newbury Street. Despite its regal appearance, this avenue (along with the surrounding neighborhood) was once underwater as part of Boston Harbor until the late 19th century. Considering itself the "Rodeo Drive of the East," Newbury Street's varied architectural styles and wide sidewalks give it a relaxed prestige. In early December, the retailers put on a " Holiday Stroll " -- complete with festive snacks and generous discounts -- to kick-off the shopping season. With a full belly and an even fuller wallet, perusing winter collections is much more fun.

Some people think that, apart from Chicago , Midwest fashion is non-existent. Those people are flat-out wrong. North of the Windy City, Minneapolis flexes its buying power on Nicollet Avenue, specifically the 13-block stretch called the Nicollet Mall . Here, you'll find stores that cater to a range of budgets. And while the city's indoor Mall of America still attracts some of the most die-hard shopaholics (not to mention cold-weather phobics), we think you'll appreciate the friendly atmosphere exhibited on this urban street. Minneapolis' holiday spirit is best seen during the Holidazzle parades, which proceed through Nicollet Mall every Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday starting at 6:30 p.m. between Thanksgiving and the weekend before Christmas.

Portland concocts shopping streets as only the Northwest can: Quirky, fun and chic. The best example of the region's commercial eccentricity is NW 23rd Avenue. Don't expect the skyscrapers of Michigan Avenue or the Italian designers of Rodeo Drive . Here, you'll find homegrown talent -- case in point, shop owner and Portlander Lynn Medoff, who creates fabric wonders in her dress boutique Lena Medoyeff . There are also special-interest boutiques, like The Hip Hound , which caters to dog lovers. Plus, Portland's easygoing attitude makes shopping along NW 23rd Avenue much less stressful.

Counterbalancing New York as a coastal heavyweight, San Francisco (with some assistance from Los Angeles ) establishes West Coast culture. However, shopping in San Fran is surprisingly decentralized: While the Union Square area hosts the most recognizable stores, Fillmore Street is the best place to catch the up-and-coming trends. The stretch between Jackson Street and Geary Street is lined with retailers and eateries, waiting to be explored. And unlike other commercial areas, Fillmore appeals to those with varied interests; it has three quaint bookstores, three flower shops and even three hardware outlets scattered among the upscale clothiers. Like Boston 's Newbury Street, Fillmore Street gets into the spirit with a "Holiday Stroll" in December, when you can enjoy festive entertainment, sweets and discounts.

While many consider Atlanta to be the shopping destination of the South, we find Charleston to be much more appealing. In our opinion, Buckhead's mega-malls can't compete with the charms of King Street. This historic avenue pulses with pedestrians in search of the perfect outfit or gift. Beautiful buildings house big-name brands like Apple and Banana Republic; however, it's the number of family-owned boutiques and male clothiers that really distinguishes King Street. Gentlemen should head to Bob Ellis for shoes and M. Dumas & Sons for apparel, as both are third-generation family-operated Charleston landmarks. Although King Street bustles with pastel-clad patrons particularly in the spring, you'll find Southern hospitality persists year-round.

Most people don't come to Washington, D.C. to shop. Capitol Hill politics dominate the city's social scene. But, take one look at C-SPAN, and you'll see the congressmen aren't dressing too shabby these days. There's only one place to go for the latest styles, and that's M Street NW in the classic Georgetown neighborhood. With its Wisconsin Avenue offshoot, the M Street area hosts preppy mainstays like Ralph Lauren, Vineyard Vines and Brooks Brothers, as well as an assortment of dining options. The crowded thoroughfare has seen many of its independent retailers replaced by luxe brands like Michael Kors and Barbour. But you can still find several sovereign shops -- such as Wink and Sangaree -- holding their own among their new neighbors. This year's winter shoppers will relish " Merriment in Georgetown ," a 12-day event featuring holiday-themed food and, of course, shopping specials.

This is perhaps the most exhausting street on our list, but we promise that Las Vegas Boulevard (otherwise known as the Strip) is well-worth a visit. Sin City's main thoroughfare is lined with a multitude of palatial casino-resorts, and nearly each one contains a labyrinth of shops that could put your local mall to shame. Plus, meandering these commercial corridors is like traveling around the world and finding the same contemporary styles. Our favorite venues on the Strip are the Forum Shops at Caesars , the Grand Canal Shoppes at the Venetian , the über-luxurious Via Bellagio and the brand-new Crystals at CityCenter. All we can say is that we hope you hit the jackpot, because Vegas will certainly show you how to spend it.

Classic, iconic, majestic … Fifth Avenue is America's premier shopping street. With old monuments like Tiffany & Co. and new ones like the Apple Store, this avenue's Midtown stretch validates commercial success. A company that secures a Fifth Avenue address is making a statement to the world that it has "made it." And the payoff is that consumers can find many of their favorite brands on one street, carefully aligned like dominos. We recognize that the Upper East Side's Madison Avenue also demonstrates a fashionable flair, while SoHo's trendy designers cater to the uniquely hip. But in our opinion, Fifth Avenue still reigns supreme. Even if you aren't looking to buy, at least pass by Bergdorf Goodman, Lord & Taylor and Saks Fifth Avenue for a peek at their holiday window displays.

The 50 Best Places to Travel in 2022

From far-flung destinations to hometown favorites, 2022 is the year to get back out there and turn your dream trips into reality.

Since 1971, Travel + Leisure editors have followed one mission: to inform, inspire, and guide travelers to have deeper, more meaningful experiences. T+L's editors have traveled to countries all over the world, having flown, sailed, road tripped, and taken the train countless miles. They've visited small towns and big cities, hidden gems and popular destinations, beaches and mountains, and everything in between. With a breadth of knowledge about destinations around the globe, air travel, cruises, hotels, food and drinks, outdoor adventure, and more, they are able to take their real-world experience and provide readers with tried-and-tested trip ideas, in-depth intel, and inspiration at every point of a journey.

Planning new adventures as a new year approaches is always a thrill, but finding the best places to visit in 2022 is unique. After two years of border closures, cruise cancellations, and travel restrictions galore , 2022 is the year we hope to get back out there, uninhibited (albeit vaccinated and COVID tested ), return to our favorite destinations, and cross new ones off our lists.

Though the hospitality industry was hit hard by the pandemic, many properties used the forced downtime to renovate rooms, add new amenities, and expand outdoor spaces to offer even more once guests return. 2022 is when many travelers will venture further from home, and even overseas, for the first time since the start of the pandemic, finally reaping the benefits of these valiant efforts.

Although COVID variants remain, regulations are still evolving, and precautions must still be taken, many of the destinations we chose for 2022 offer what we believe travelers are looking for in a post-pandemic world, from hotels with private accommodations to destinations teeming with fresh-air activities . Others, like Las Vegas, are for those who are ready and raring to make up for all the social time they missed — with a few splashy headliners, including Adele and the Raiders, thrown in for good measure.

As cruising makes its comeback , we included unforgettable places to see by water, from Antarctica to the Nile, and as hard-hit destinations like Italy and Asia recover, we found the buzziest reasons to return. Of course we didn't forget about all the stateside gems we got to know while domestic travel was surging, from Alaska and California to Florida and Michigan.

Our 2022 list, organized alphabetically, doesn't hold back, with aspirational trips as far away as India, Mozambique, Qatar, and even space — but we're also including hometown favorites, like Walt Disney World and its new Star Wars hotel ; the wellness retreats of beautiful Sedona; and the simple pleasures of small-town , farm-to-table living in Franklin, Tennessee. Because no matter what type of trip you've been dreaming of, we want to help you turn 2022 into the year you get back out there and make it a reality.

1. Abruzzo, Italy

Stretching from the heart of the Apennines to the Adriatic Sea on the peninsula's southeastern side, Abruzzo, Italy has long been one of the country's most overlooked destinations despite its unspoiled villages, picturesque Trabocchi Coast, and stunning natural escapes. Over the past few years, however, it has gone from a sleepy underdog to an ambitious harbinger of slow travel, sustainable gastronomy, and conscious hospitality. Villa Corallo , a 19th-century mansion near Civitella del Tronto was transformed into a five-star hotel in 2019. Dimore Montane , an eco-lodge opened in 2020 in Majella National Park, marries glamping with environmentally-friendly facilities with a zero waste policy. Meanwhile, restaurants like Bottega Culinaria in San Vito Chietino and Materia Prima in Castel di Sangro are redefining the region as one of Italy's most exciting food hotspots for their innovative and sustainable takes on local produce and traditional dishes (in case Niko Romito's three-Michelin-starred Reale wasn't enough). And completing construction this Spring is Via Verde dei Trabocchi: a cycling and pedestrian path along the Adriatic sea that's being built on a disused railway route. — Marianna Cerini

With many international borders closed over the last two years, many eager U.S. travelers' eyes turned to Alaska. The vast state, famous for its towering, snow-capped peaks, pristine wilderness, massive national parks, and colorful locals, made for a dynamic destination with no passport required. But as borders reopen, interest in the 49th state is showing no signs of slowing down. Alaska's tourism board said early forecasts are projecting that more than 1.57 million cruise ship passengers could visit southeast Alaska in summer 2022. That's an 18% jump from 2019, the previous record year. Many perennial favorite cruise lines , like Holland America, will be returning to full strength after a non-existent 2020 and abbreviated 2021. Others, like Windstar Cruises, UnCruise, and Hurtigruten are rolling out fresh itineraries or are launching new ships. On dry land, Alaska is set to see myriad new offerings and events. In Juneau, the Sealaska Heritage Institute will open their Arts Campus (where visitors will be able to learn about Alaska Native art and culture) and will host Celebration , one of the largest gatherings of Indigenous peoples. In Anchorage, Fur Rendezvous , Alaska's oldest and largest winter festival, will be back from Feb. 25 to March 6 (which also happens to be peak aurora season ). The event hosts activities like the Running of the Reindeer and the Outhouse Races, before culminating with the 50th running of the iconic Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race . — Bailey Berg

3. Anguilla

This easy-going Caribbean gem is simpler than ever to get to with American Airlines launching the first-ever nonstop, direct flight from Miami on Dec. 11. Private charter flights by Tradewind Aviation have also resumed service to the island. And the just-opened Aurora Anguilla Resort & Golf Club has a fleet of jets to ferry guests from key U.S. cities. The sprawling luxury resort will include a few restaurants overseen by chef Abram Bissell, formerly of Eleven Madison Park, The NoMad, and The Modern. Quintessence , a boutique luxury resort with perks like butler service and a 4:1 staff-to-guest ratio, is opening a more affordable annex of suites called Quinn that will debut in 2022 (along with a Champagne cellar tasting room and Art Bar). New Restaurant Uchu at Belmond Cap Juluca is taking inspiration from Belmond's collection of properties in Peru. Named after the Quechuan word for spice, the menu will feature contemporary Peruvian cuisine inspired by three of the country's regions: the coast, the jungle, and the highlands. — Scott Bay

4. Antarctica

The pandemic shutdown created a compelling reason to visit Antarctica in 2022: See how the whales, seals, and penguins react after nearly two years without seeing humans. New polar-class expedition ships and new ways to get to the White Continent are reasons to pack your boots too. Viking Expeditions will be in Antarctica for the first time in 2022 with new, twin 378-passenger expedition ships. Ponant's new 270-passenger Le Commandant Charcot introduces eco-friendlier sailing, as the first hybrid-electric ship fueled by liquified natural gas (rather than heavy fuel). Quark Expeditions' long-awaited 199-passenger Ultramarine delivers exciting heli-hiking adventures via two eight-seat twin-engine helicopters. Hit a craps table in between icy exploration on the luxurious new all-suite 200-passenger Crystal Endeavor . Silversea Cruises' posh, 144-passenger, all-suite Silver Explorer returns with a debut travel option: Skip the notorious (for rough water) Drake Passage and catch a private flight directly from Chile to Antarctica to board the ship. — Fran Golden

American travelers have long loved the Bahamas for its crystal-clear waters, sandy beaches, and sunshine just about 50 miles off the coast of Florida, but there are even more reasons to visit the island nation in 2022. Baha Mar on the Island of New Providence has a brand new water park equipped with everything from a lazy river to a surf simulator, and day passes are available for purchase to those who aren't resort guests. For more rest and relaxation, journey to the outer islands of the Bahamas. While charter flights will get you exactly where you need to go, Crystal Cruises is offering a Bahamas-centric cruise that brings guests to some of the quieter and more remote islands. On its mid-July cruise, guests will embark and disembark from Nassau and then be whisked away via "6-star" service to the islands of Bimini, Great Exuma, San Salvador, and Long Island. Beyond the beach, don't forget to indulge in some local food and culture. The Island archipelago is famous for its conch, stew fish, and rock lobster. From late April through early May, Carnival is celebrated in Nassau and back after a pandemic hiatus. Keep an eye out for the famous sound and dance of the junkanoo. — Jamie Aranoff

6. Barbados

Whether you want a relaxing all-inclusive stay or a vibrant vacation filled with dining and nightlife, Barbados has you covered. Nowhere is that more evident than the pedestrian-friendly South Coast, which is teeming with new resorts and restaurants. The O2 Beach Club & Spa is an all-inclusive resort set on the white sands of Dover Beach, with three pools, six dining options, seven bars, and the Acqua spa, featuring the only hammam treatment room on the island. It joins other luxurious South Coast hotels, including Sandals and Sea Breeze Beach House . If you can pull yourself away from the resort pools, head along the coast to Worthing Square Food Garden, an outdoor food hall with 20 vendors serving dishes from around the Caribbean. Or stroll down the mile-long boardwalk for easy access to ocean-front food and drinks at local favorites like Champers, Salt Café, Tiki Bar, and Chill Café & Bar. — Kevin Gray

A favorite of adventure travelers for its rainforests and divers who explore the Great Blue Hole and expansive barrier reef, Belize offers an abundance of casual spots and a handful of luxe resorts. The latest arrival is Alaia Belize, an Autograph Collection Hotel , in San Pedro on Ambergris Caye, opened mid-2021 with plans to add to its already extensive guest room, suite, and oceanfront villa accommodations. Major airlines are also recognizing the destination's potential with nonstop flights and convenient connections from most U.S. cities. In addition to United and Delta's nonstop flights from Houston and Atlanta, respectively, Alaska Airlines added nonstop service from Los Angeles and Seattle to Belize City in November, and Frontier will start weekly nonstop flights from Denver and Orlando. — Patricia Doherty

8. Budapest, Hungary

Very few places in the world capture both old-world charm and elegant modernity like Hungary's capital city, and Budapest's latest 130-room luxury hotel, Matild Palace , is a shining example. The neo-baroque palace-turned-hotel, which opened last summer in the city's District V, is a UNESCO-protected site that once housed the city's royalty. The hotel is now home to Wolfgang Punk's famed restaurant, Spago , the first of its kind in central Europe. It also hosts the Duchess bar — a rooftop "liquor library" that mixes craft cocktails using local wines and pálinka, Hungarian fruit brandy, which can be enjoyed alongside panoramic views of the Danube river. Surrounded by 22 wine regions, Budapest is a city for oenophiles. Enjoy a glass of Kékfrankos or Kadarka in the Castle District's newly opened wine bar, Takler Borbár Buda , founded by one of the country's renowned winemaking families. Don't leave the city without visiting Marlou , a biodynamic wine bar near the Hungarian State Opera, and Portobello , an unassuming coffee and natural wine bar around the corner from Matild Palace. — Stephanie Andrews

9. Burgundy, France

The region of Burgundy is known for — you guessed it — its Burgundy wine, but French wine isn't the only reason Burgundy is a must-visit in 2022. In the spring, the region's capital city of Dijon will welcome the Cité Internationale de la Gastronomie et du Vin (International City of Gastronomy and Wine), an expansive complex with a cooking school, a new hotel, a handful of restaurants, and a wine cellar with over 250 by-the-glass offerings. The new project is perfectly situated at the starting point of Burgundy's famed wine route — Route des Grands Crus — which runs from Dijon to Santenay and produces some of the country's most well-regarded wines, including pinot noir, chardonnay, and sauvignon blanc. — Evie Carrick

10. British Virgin Islands

Within the Caribbean, the 60 islands that comprise the British Virgin Islands have long held the reputation of luxury draped in relaxation. And now it's doubling down on that brand of island spirit with Richard Branson's second private island, the 125-acre Moskito Island that opened in October and sits right across from his first BVI paradise, Necker Island (which received a serious upgrade when it reopened last year after a two-year closure). The new destination will eventually have 10 private estates that can be rented through Virgin Limited Edition , but among the ones already available are Point Estate, starting at $17,500 a night, and Oasis Estate for $19,000. But Moskito isn't the only shiny new reason to visit BVI. Proving the area's resilience following the devastation after Hurricanes Irma and Maria, Saba Rock , the private island long known for its diving, went through a complete reconstruction before reopening in October; the Bitter End Yacht Club reopened in December with BVI's first over-the-water bungalows; and Oil Nut Bay will expand in early 2022 with new villas, a watersports center, and spa. Also on tap for 2022, the solar-powered White Bay Villas and new hilltop suites at Long Bay Beach Resort . And with the Spring Regatta and Sailing Festival returning in the spring of 2022 after being canceled for two years, BVI is proving it's truly back and stronger than ever. — Rachel Chang

11. Costa Smeralda, Sardinia

You're likely to glimpse Europe's pro athlete and yachting crowds at Marriott's four hotels on the Costa Smeralda, the glitzy Italian destination known for its Caribbean-like beaches and luxury resorts. Its glamorous Hotel Cala di Volpe has gradually been unveiling room renovations alongside new dining options, including its Harrods Suite, with a roof terrace and sea-facing plunge pool, and BeefBar 's first Italian outpost. The entire area is one big " Billionaire Experience ," but Formula One and entertainment mogul Flavio Briatore snagged the term for his new dining and nightlife venue in designer shopping destination Porto Cervo. For more of a low-key, family-friendly escape, the Baglioni Resort Sardinia opened an hour south in San Teodoro in June, overlooking the stunning Tavolara Marine Reserve . — Nina Ruggiero

12. Crete, Greece

The Greek Islands have long been a perennial favorite vacation destination for discerning travelers, and Crete, the largest of the 227 islands in the archipelago, deserves a spot atop your must-see list. Yes, it's a place where you can find the white-washed buildings and blue roofs you've lusted after on Instagram for years, and a spot where you can dive into the cerulean blue waters of the Mediterranean at every turn. And of course you can dig deep into both history and mythology as humans have lived on the island since the 7th millennium B.C ., not to mention the fact that Crete is the birthplace of Zeus . It's little surprise then, with all this beauty and history, that Crete continues to harbor a rich creative community, mostly centered in the neighborhood of Chania. There, visitors can peruse works in museums like the Mediterranean Architecture Center , or seek out unique pieces in galleries like the Municipal Art Gallery or the Redd Gallery . To visit Crete, hop aboard a sailing with Silversea , which takes guests to Crete and several other stellar islands, or book a stay at the Blue Palace Elounda, a Luxury Collection Resort , named one of the Top 10 Greece Resort Hotels in Travel + Leisure 's World's Best Awards, 2021. — Stacey Leasca

14. Doha, Qatar

As we ask ourselves what cities of the future should look like, we naturally look around for examples. Places like Shanghai, Tokyo, and New York City seem to fit the description on paper, but I'd argue that no city better encapsulates that definition than Doha, the capital of Qatar. There is so much to discover — from East-West/West-East , a series of four steel monoliths created by sculptor Richard Serra to the Museum of Islamic Art , the massive 560,000-square-foot gallery. Eat at Syrian comfort food spot Damasca One, Em Sherif a rooftop spot that serves up authentic regional dishes, and the lively corner restaurant Nourlaya Contemporary for Sri Lankan cuisine. Stay at the Mandarin Oriental Doha or Banyan Tree Doha . (Read Robinson's full dispatch on Doha in the July 2021 edition of Travel + Leisure) — Whitney Robinson

16. Finger Lakes, New York

The Finger Lakes have bolstered their wellness and culinary offerings in recent years, carving out a name for themselves in the luxury travel realm. Inns of Aurora , comprising five historic mansions, debuted a holistic wellness facility in 2021 — set on 350 acres overlooking Cayuga Lake, complete with hydrotherapy pools, meditation areas, and a farm fresh cafe. Forty miles west of Cayuga, The Lakehouse on Canandaigua — situated on, yes, Canandaigua Lake — recently unveiled the Willowbrook Spa, which boasts lakeside barrel sauna sessions among other innovative treatments. Sandwiched between Cayuga and Canandaigua lakes is Seneca Lake, home to the largest of the Finger Lakes wine trails (this might be riesling country, but don't knock the lighter-bodied reds till you try 'em) and foodie draws like the 14-seat F.L.X. Table . Travelers visiting in the coming year will also see the Finger Lakes festival roster return in full force, including Rochester's Lilac Festival in May and International Jazz Festival in July, as well as attractions for the historically inclined road tripper, like Cayuga County's celebration of Harriet Tubman's birth through a number of walking tours and activations rolled out through 2022. — Maya Kachroo-Levine

17. Franklin, Tennessee

Despite its count of more than 80,000 year-round residents, the very walkable Franklin firmly grasps onto its small-town charms, starting with a quintessentially quaint downtown chock-full of shops and restaurants finding shelter in brick storefronts lining the sidewalks. The uninitiated might know this place for its past — Civil War museums, battleground sites, and historic markers telling the stories of a slave market, race riots, and Black soldiers in the U.S. Colored Troop division of the army all offer points of education and reflection. But the southern city has many modern-day draws as well — for starters, an exciting food and drink scene that includes the Tennessee Whiskey Trail and Arrington Vineyards , the largest winery in the region. Musical events and venues abound, too: The Pilgrimage Music Festival is one of the biggest in the state, and the 7,500-seat FirstBank Amphitheater , newly opened inside a former rock quarry, has welcomed the likes of the Jonas Brothers and Santana to its stage. There's also Leiper's Fork , a quirky-cool enclave filled with antique shops and art galleries. Even more brand-new to the scene is Southall , a 325-acre farm and inn with 62 rooms and suites and 16 cottages opening this June. The lush setting amid rolling hills makes active adventures (hiking, biking, kayaking), wellness pursuits (a spa, meditation, yoga, and two outdoor pools), and nourishing food (the restaurant uses ingredients grown, raised, and foraged on the property) easy to find. All of this and more lie just a short, 30-minute drive from bustling Nashville, making it tempting to tack onto a visit to the capital city. — Alisha Prakash

18. Galápagos Islands

The world's largest marine biosphere reserve will expand more than 20,000 square miles next year thanks to a recent presidential decree . The conservation measure seeks to combat illegal fishing by offering increased protection to the thousands of species that populate the archipelago's waters as well as a migration corridor stretching up to Costa Rica used by sharks, whales and other sea life. Come January, travelers can cruise this UNESCO-protected region on new nine-day adventures from Hurtigruten Expeditions and outfitter Metropolitan Touring aboard the 90-guest carbon-neutral MS Santa Cruz II. For a more intimate experience, passengers can book Aqua Expeditions ' seven-suite 164-foot superyacht, Aqua Mare, when it debuts in May. At the end of the year, eco-enthusiasts can sail to lesser-explored islands to spot giant tortoises, sea lions, flightless cormorants, Galápagos penguins, and marine iguanas on Quasar Expeditions ' new sustainable yacht — the 18-passenger M/Y Conservation featuring biodegradable amenities, renewable energy and a carbon-neutral footprint. Those with timid sea legs should check into the locally owned and run Montemar in the highlands of Santa Cruz Island. — Nora Walsh

19. Greater Palm Springs, California

Greater Palm Springs is kicking its signature self-care into high gear in the coming year. In Palm Springs proper, Agua Caliente Cultural Plaza will celebrate Indigenous art and history alongside the new Spa at Séc-he , where visitors will soak in approximately 12,000-year-old hot springs. Nearby, Fleur Noire Hotel just opened its adults-only casitas and bungalows, with a speakeasy Champagne bar to follow. 21. Ilha Caldeira, Mozambique

While South Africa and Uganda grab headlines for African wildlife, Mozambique has been quietly making strides protecting 17 percent of its land — including beaches, coral reefs, and islands — showcasing its dedication to its natural beauty both on land and underwater. Ever since the country's 16-year civil war ended in 1992, the southeastern African nation has been aiming to build back in the right ways. Case in point: the private island of Ilha Caldeira, less than seven miles off the coast as part of the Primeiras and Segundas Archipelago, located within the marine-protected area with 20 percent of the country's intact living coral. It's here that the eco-luxury Banyan Tree resort chain has developed one of its most ambitious projects yet, a five-star property — accessible by jetty or helicopter — with 40 private pool villas that will be completely solar powered. Add to that a fish market restaurant with a 270-degree ocean view, the brand's trademark Banyan Tree Spa, and world-class diving, all in a too-pristine-to-believe beach setting, and this island escape is sure to draw attention away from its Indian Ocean neighbors when it opens at the end of 2022. — Rachel Chang

And, a host of just-announced Ryanair flight routes, including Madrid to Kaunas, will make visiting this capital of culture a breeze. — Stephanie Vermillion

25. Kyushu, Japan

Kyushu may be less than two hours from Tokyo by plane, but it feels far from Honshū's well-beaten tourist circuit. The southwesternmost Japanese main island is still largely unexplored, providing those willing to venture off the beaten path with a much different Japan than the one they'll find in its cities. As a warm, subtropical island, Kyushu is home to long, golden beaches and some of Japan's best snorkeling and scuba diving. Inland, the country's most active volcano, Mt. Aso, feeds the island's myriad natural hot springs — many of which offer sea views. And while the island has accommodations that include both hot spring resorts and luxury beachfront villas , nothing tops a stay at Hirado Castle , which was recently restored and renovated to welcome visitors overnight . — Evie Carrick

Virgin Hotels Las Vegas, the Cromwell , and downtown's Circa Resort & Casino are also giving visitors fresh options on where to stay. The city's pro sports teams — also now plural — are drawing in fans. And off-Strip "immersive experiences," like the Omega Mart by Meow Wolf and the Illuminarium, both at Area15 , are lending an additional layer of things to do beyond the expected. Not that there's anything wrong with splashing out on dinner and a show after the past two years. Live acts — like Adele's just-announced residency at The Colosseum — are once again hot tickets, as is a table at chic new supper club Delilah , at the Wynn Las Vegas. Some things, thankfully, never change. — Paul Brady

Now that the island of Langkawi is open via a travel bubble, with the rest of the country expected to follow suit in 2022, travelers can once again experience Malaysia's many gifts. Langkawi, a beach lover's paradise, blends unspoiled nature (UNESCO-listed Kilim Karst Geoforest Park ) and unparalleled luxury ( Four Seasons Resort , Datai Langkawi ), while cosmopolitan capital Kuala Lumpur draws visitors with its gleaming Petronas Towers, delicious hawker food stalls, and shopping. Then there's Borneo, complete with wildlife-packed jungles and a rich Indigenous culture, as well as Desaru Coast, a 3,900-acre area that's home to coveted resorts like the One&Only Desaru Coast , a tropical oasis that opened in early September 2020 (the brand's first in Asia). — Alisha Prakash

In May, the coastal town is welcoming a Sailing Museum that is sure to solidify that title. The Vanderbilt, Auberge Resorts Collection is debuting the property's highly anticipated transformation conceived by Dallas-based design collective Swoon — the lobby, dining room, and shared areas are now complete with guest rooms finishing early next year. Renowned beverage executive Maxwell Britten has joined the team as chief cocktail curator alongside an amazing chef who cooks up a selection of elevated pub-inspired dishes. And don't miss Giusto , at Hammett's Hotel, which serves up excellent Italian with a Rhode Island twist. — Scott Bay

32. Nile Cruise, Egypt

There is no trip that will convert you to a life of river cruising quite like a sail down (well, technically, up) the Nile. In fact, the world's first river cruises sailed in Egypt, a country designed around the central waterway, where it makes sense that the Nile would act as your home base. A typical Egyptian river cruise sets sail from Cairo to Luxor and then Aswan, with the occasional stop to visit an island temple along the way — complete with sights like the Pyramids, Valley of Kings and Queens, Nefertari's tomb, and the Temple of Kom Ombo. In 2022, there's more than one new river cruise to choose from, between Uniworld's newly launched S.S. Sphinx and AmaWaterways' Amadahlia , both of which sailed their inaugural voyages in fall 2021. — Maya Kachroo-Levine

In late 2021, Panama launched a tourism platform along with the coolest tagline in travel: " Live for More ." With a booming coffee scene and a renewed focus on its culture, history, and biodiversity , the Central American nation is ready for its moment in the spotlight. There is also abundant opportunity to learn from Panama's seven Indigenous communities, each of whom offer their own personalized experiences and are happy to share their craftsmanship and traditions. In its capital city, check into the American Trade Hotel , centrally located in Panama's Casco Viejo district, a historic neighborhood which happens to also be a UNESCO World Heritage Site. — Stacey Leasca

34. Phuket, Thailand

Before the pandemic, Phuket was beautiful but crowded, full of beach bars and tourists chasing all-nighters. It's still full of energy and surrounded by the same pristine sea glass–colored water, but its luxurious side is finally getting the attention it deserves, from its high-end coffee shops to its cocktail bars. Hide from the world in paradise with a stay in one of the private pool residences at Trisara , featuring kitchens, a private chef, butler service, and breathtaking views over the sea, as well as access to the resort's PRU restaurant , which has earned both a Michelin star and a Michelin green star. Or book a stay at the brand-new V Villas Phuket , which offers a curated selection of 19 private-pool, 1-, 3-, and 4-bedroom villas. 35. Pico, Portugal

The islands of the Azores — a Portuguese archipelago in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean some 900 miles west of Lisbon — are more popular than ever, and for 2022, travelers will want to fix their eyes firmly on the second-largest isle: Pico, an alluring, otherworldly locale covered with black, volcanic rocks. Conquering Portugal's highest peak, the cloud-shrouded, 7,713-foot-high Mount Pico, used to be the island's main draw, but a recent uptick in hospitality infrastructure has allowed for more opportunity to partake of Pico's most important agricultural output: wine. Renowned Portuguese winemaker Antonio Maçanita just opened a new winery that comes with bookable design-forward apartments adjacent to the island's unique vineyards. On Pico, grapes are planted on volcanic terroir that are then protected from Atlantic winds with rock walls. Maçanita's Azores Wine Company 's mineral, sometimes slightly salty wines could be the perfect celebratory drink after a grueling hike. The crashing waves around Pico are beginning to seduce surfers, too. And there are also ample opportunities to watch for marine life thanks to 20 species of dolphins and whales (including humpbacks and orcas) that can be spotted in these waters. But if you'd rather eat what's in the water: Try lapas, a local shellfish delicacy best served grilled with butter and garlic and finished with a squeeze of lemon. Thankfully, getting to experience all of this has never been easier: Starting July 1, United Airlines will for the first time connect Newark to the island of São Miguel (the Azores' largest island), and from there, it's a quick hop over to Pico. Or you could always get there via direct flights from Lisbon or Porto with Tap Air Portugal's stopover program. — Chadner Navarro

38. Santa Ynez Valley, California

Two hours from L.A., the Santa Ynez Valley is rural, unassuming, and coming into its own. The region has grown grapes for decades and has even made a Hollywood cameo in the movie Sideways. Make home base the brand-new Thompson Savannah , a slick 13-story tower with interiors by Studio 11 Design that anchors the still-developing Eastern Wharf neighborhood. Phase one of the 54-acre development, which aims to turn a once-industrial waterfront into a contemporary mixed-use destination, includes hundreds of apartments, fitness trails, access to the Savannah River, and multiple bars and restaurants, including Fleeting , a seasonally driven spot inside the Thompson. At the same time, Savannah's other major waterfront destination has also come into its own. The Plant Riverside District, a stone's throw from Old Town, marked its official grand opening in November 2021, putting a bow on a bustling JW Marriott hotel , countless restaurants and bars, and multiple live performance venues all along a rebuilt waterfront. Not that all the action is along the river: The ever-evolving Starland District, a short drive from Johnson Square, has its share of hangouts including Starland Yard , a food truck park that's also home to the excellent Pizzeria Vittoria Napoletana ; Two Tides Brewing Company , which pours hazy ales and delicious sours in a super-cool taproom; and Troupial , a Venezuelan cafe. 50. Yucatán, Mexico

Mérida, the capital of the state of Yucatán, has emerged as one of Mexico's most popular cities thanks to its lively restaurant scene, a busy calendar of cultural events, and a relaxed tropical atmosphere. Increasingly, however, travelers are venturing beyond the city to explore the state's unspoiled nature reserves, ancient Maya sites, and sprawling haciendas — a number now converted into hotels. Sisal, a historic port in the western part of the state, has attracted new interest since being named a Pueblo Mágico at the end of 2020. A new highway completed in April now connects Sisal to Hunucmá (and then beyond to Mérida) making it easier for beachcombers to visit, and perhaps spend the night at the cool Club de Patos . — John Newton

51. Bonus: Space

This was a monumental year for human spaceflight — not only did NASA and SpaceX achieve a regular cadence of astronaut launches for the first time since the Space Shuttle was retired in 2011, but space tourism has also lifted off in a major way, making space a top destination to visit in 2022. And it's a realistic trip, too, so long as you have the budget for it. Both Blue Origin and Virgin Galactic succeeded in taking passengers to space on short suborbital hops this year, and each company plans to ramp up those flights in 2022 — Virgin Galactic already has more than 600 bookings. The price for a quick jaunt to space? A few hundred thousand dollars . If you have an even bigger budget (say, a couple hundred million dollars), you could charter your own orbital flight in a SpaceX Dragon Capsule, as did entrepreneur Jared Issacman with his Inspiration4 mission in September. There are also tourism trips to the International Space Station in the works; Japanese billionaire Yusaku Maezawa launches on his multi-day journey in December, courtesy of space travel agency Space Adventures and Russia's Roscosmos space agency, which plans to take even more " citizen space explorers " to the orbiting laboratory in the near future. Of course, not everyone has pockets deep enough to cover space travel, but more affordable journeys are on the horizon. Startup Space Perspective plans to launch high-altitude balloon rides to the edge of space in 2024 , for the relatively low price of $125,000. Potential dealbreaker, though — the balloons don't actually reach space, maxing out at 100,000 feet in altitude, while space is considered to begin somewhere between 264,000 feet (50 miles) and 327,360 feet (62 miles). But hey, at least there's a bar on board. — Stefanie Waldek

Beacon, New York

Beacon, on the Hudson River north of New York City, has transformed from "sleepy working-class community to popular weekend getaway," according to Conde Nast Traveler . There are also numerous boutiques and cafes in this town of about 13,800 people.

Busy Main Street, Mt. Airy, NC

Mount Airy, North Carolina

You can stay in the Aunt Bee Room  at the Mayberry Motor Inn. Or grab a pork chop sandwich from Snappy Lunch, where Griffith used to visit as a young man. These Are the Best International Travel Destinations of 2024, According to Tripadvisor

Here's your sign that it's time to plan a trip to Asia.

Looking for somewhere to go in 2024, but need a little advice on where, exactly, to jet off to next? Just take a gander at Tripadvisor’s 2024 Travelers’ Choice Awards for a little inspiration.

Tripadvisor released its annual awards, starting with the Best of the Best Destinations , which the website said in a statement highlights “the most sought-after destinations for the year, according to Tripadvisor reviewers.”

The Best of the Best Destinations encompasses seven categories this year, including the Top Destinations , Culture Destinations , Food Destinations , Nature Destinations , Honeymoon Destinations , Sustainable Destinations , and one in particular that caught our eye — Trending Destinations . Specifically, those that made the cut for top trending international spots.

To find out which destinations were really on the rise, Tripadvisor calculated the winners based on the “quality and quantity of reviews, specific to each award subcategory” that were created by its global traveler user base between Oct. 1, 2022, and Sept. 30, 2023. Specifically, this category, Tripadvisor added, “identifies places that have seen the greatest year-over-year growth in interest” from users.

After parsing through the data, Tokyo came out as its top trending destination for 2024. And, as Tripadvisor noted, Asia as a whole is having a real moment, with eight out of the top 10 trending spots going to destinations on the continent.

Tokyo is joined on the list by Seoul in the second place spot, followed by Halong Bay, Vietnam in third; Palawan Island, Philippines in fourth; and Sapa, Vietnam rounding out the top five.

“With 94 percent of Americans planning to travel as much, if not more, than last year, enthusiasm is high, and this year’s list of Travelers’ Choice Best of the Best Destinations really reflects that excitement,” Sarah Firshein, the head of editorial at Tripadvisor, said in a statement provided to Travel + Leisure . “Winners like Dubai, Tokyo, Paris, and Marrakech indicate that our community has an unbridled appetite for destinations with vibrant arts-and-culture scenes, top-notch restaurants, and seemingly limitless attractions and experiences. It’s also great to see a rebound on long-haul trips to Asia, with the region having fully opened up post-pandemic; as Tripadvisor’s Trending Destinations list shows, travelers are keen to get out there and explore with gusto.”

Ready to see where else Tripadvisor travelers are psyched to visit in 2024? Check out all of the destinations at tripadvisor.com .

Movies under the stars, trapeze lessons, windsurfing — with cool activities like these, kids will never want to leave this newish resort in the lush, away-from-it-all part of the island. Supervised clubs for babies through teens keep the good times rolling while you’re at the adults-only Zen pool or doing treetop yoga. (Yes, that’s a thing.) Solar panels, recycling, plastic-free water bottles and other sustainable initiatives are part of the eco-minded resort culture.

Beaches Negril Resort & Spa, Negril, Jamaica

While this all-inclusive resort and 2024 Family Travel Award-winner caters to all ages, toddlers and preschoolers will be star-struck. Sesame Street characters entertain them with story times, dance parties and even puppet-making! That’s on top of the mini water slides, splash areas and a playground that makes little ones squeal with glee and wears them out, so they’ll hit the sack early.

Private childcare and supervised kids’ clubs (for babies through teens, including those with special needs) are an option when you want a spa treatment, a quiet dinner or just to read a book on the resort's idyllic 7-Mile Beach. All the rooms and suites got a glow-up in 2020, plus there are new villas with butler service (sign us up!)

With these worries aside, you can concentrate on the beauty of the surroundings (the resort is surrounded by a lush mangrove forest) and incredible bucket-list activities, like kids’ carnivals and night kayaking. All the rooms have received a glow-up and there's a sleek new beach club to boot.

Rock House Resort, Turks & Caicos

Your family may never leave the water at this Mediterranean-inspired oasis , which opened in May 2022. In addition to a full kitchen and roomy living room, many of the villa-style accommodations feature a spacious private pool. (Yes way!) And if your crew ever tires of it, fun awaits at the resort’s oceanfront infinity pool and stretch of white sand beach, which is exclusively for resort guests. Just note that while a cliffside setting makes the resort incredibly picturesque, it’s impossible to navigate with a stroller — so bring the tweens, teens and even grandparents if they don’t have trouble climbing stairs.

Embassy Suites by Hilton Aruba Resort

A brand that's popular with families because it offers separate sleeping spaces for kids and adults, Embassy Suites recently opened a location in Aruba. (Pinch us now.) The 330-suite hotel boasts a kids' pool and playground and is just steps away from the iconic Eagle Beach. A breakfast buffet (with made-to-order items) is included in the price, which is already a value. Rooms also feature a kitchenette, so you can stash drinks and snacks and save your budget for the island's many incredible water activities.

New England Cozy

Lakes, lighthouses and hiking trails make New England a great place to visit in almost any season.

Quisisana Resort, Lovell, ME

two friends frolic in a lake at the quisisana resort, a good housekeeping pick for family vacation destinations

Kids will get a digital detox at this all-inclusive lakefront resort , but they’ll be too busy playing to miss their devices. Without TV or a Wi-Fi signal in the comfortable, air-conditioned rooms and cabins, they’ll be fully immersed in the slew of included activities — from paddle boating to tennis to sandcastle-building. They might even learn to kayak or catch their first fish.

At night, music fills the resort. Broadway-style shows, held in a new outdoor theater, entertain all generations. There’s something about the fresh air and a choice of lollipops that keeps most kids from getting too wiggly, and the caliber of the performances is at least on par with good community theater.

The three included daily meals — with menu items like lobster rolls and Maine blueberry pie — will leave your crew’s bellies happy and full. And if you do need Wi-Fi occasionally, you can pop in the main lobby for a signal. Shh: The kids will be fine without it.

Hidden Pond, Kennebunkport, ME

Open from May to October, this nature-focused retreat provides a refuge from city life. Yoga sessions in the garden, a shed filled with arts and crafts supplies for kids, guided nature walks and outdoor art classes are easy-going yet exciting at the same time. Cottages with fireplaces foster togetherness, and complimentary breakfast arrives at your door every morning so there's no need to rush out for coffee.

Smugglers' Notch Resort, Jeffersonville, VT

Nestled in the Green Mountains, this resort is just as fun in the summer months as it is during prime ski season. Besides eight heated pools (some with waterslides!), the action-packed lineup of family activities has plenty to do whether you’re traveling with a toddler, teen or both. Sing-a-longs, magic shows and scavenger hunts keep little ones entertained while older kids will welcome the chance to take a guided hike, design and launch a water rocket or play glow-in-the-dark volleyball. A GH 2024 Family Travel Awards winner, condos at this property accommodate up to five bedrooms, making it possible for extended family and friends to stay together.

Ocean Edge Resort and Golf Club, Brewster, MA

Beach, pool, eat, repeat — that’s how your crew will spend laid-back days at this Cape Cod gem . The private beach has gentle surf and at low tide, kids can spy little sea creatures in the tide pools. When the tide changes, head to the heated outdoor or indoor pools. Outdoor movies are the perfect wind-down to bedtime. And if you can pry the kids out of the water, activities like scavenger hunts, curated by the resort’s new director of fun (for real!) await. Just make sure to stay in the “mansion” section of the resort because that’s the part with private beach access.

Sebasco Harbor Resort, Phippsburg, ME

the kids' club at the sebasco harbor resort, a good housekeeping pick for best family vacation destination

Kids will never forget sleeping in a lighthouse next to the ocean. The resort’s 1945 lighthouse contains recently renovated guest rooms with amazing views, sea breezes and conveniences like a fridge and microwave. The lighthouse rooms are also near the resort’s iconic oceanfront saltwater pool, which recently got a makeover. A vintage bowling alley, weekly pirate cruise and old-school kids’ club add to the New England charm.

Bluebird Cady Hill Lodge, Stowe, VT

bluebird cady hill lodge

A fantastic value, this new '70s-inspired cozy lodge is perfect for families who want to explore Vermont's Green Mountains. The scenic trails of Cady Hill Forest are just steps away and downtown Stowe is about a 10-minute walk. Two- and three-bedroom cottages at Bluebird Cady Hill Lodge have plenty of space for families and a kitchen to boot. A game room, fire pits for s'mores roasting and a pool make hanging at the lodge a nice respite in between nature activities.

California Dreamin'

Choose your Cali adventure: You can find bustling cityscapes, tranquil trails, stunning beaches and even a fairytale castle.

Los Angeles, CA

morning scenery of griffith observatory and downtown la los angeles is good housekeeping pick for best family vacation destinations

Tweens and teens won’t roll their eyes if you suggest a vacay in L.A. — where, trust us, they’ll ask you to eat at In-N-Out-Burger (look cool and say you already had it on the list). Some more must-dos: Visit the Griffith Observatory for the out-of-this-world exhibits and a stellar view of the Hollywood sign, and if you're an outdoorsy family you can hike down from the observatory to the Hollywood Walk of Fame and famous TCL Chinese Theaters .

The Academy Museum of Motion Pictures , where anyone 17 and under gets in free, is conveniently located near the classic La Brea Tar Pits and the cool LACMA ( Los Angeles County Museum of Art). Some outdoor shopping at The Grove L.A. and a beach day in Santa Monica with a spin on the iconic wheel at the Santa Monica Pier will get you more well-deserved parent cred. Or, you can take a trip to Universal Studios Hollywood , where, for now, you can find the only Super Nintendo World open in the United States. Stay at The Garland in North Hollywood, a Good Housekeeping 2024 Family Travel Awards winner. It has a swanky trolley that transports guests to and from Universal, as well as other kid perks like dive-in movies and a retro-chic family suite with bunk beds.

San Diego, CA

an overhead shot of the loews coronado bay over the water in san diego, a good housekeeping pick for best family vacation destination

Can’t decide between heading to the beach or exploring a big city? San Diego has the best of both worlds, with near-perfect weather to boot. Make your home base a beach resort like the Kona Kai San Diego Resort & Spa , San Diego Mission Bay Resort or, if you're bringing a big group, Shore House at Del, a Good Housekeeping 2024 Family Travel Award winner. Intersperse oceanside fun with short drives to the city’s famous zoo and museums in Balboa Park. Plan to spend at least a half day at Liberty Station , a cultural attraction that has many places to eat and shop. New stores and restaurants are open at Seaport Village , which has a classic carousel for kids to ride.

Monterey, CA

guests wearing face coverings and enjoying the kelp forest exhibit at the monterey bay aquarium monterey is a good housekeeping pick for best family vacation destination

The number one reason to book a vacation in this coastal town: the aquarium. Yes, the Monterey Bay Aquarium is that good. It levels up the typical touch tank experience by letting little kids crawl through tunnels surrounded by tropical fish displays and use squirt toys to learn how animals stand up to big waves. There’s even a padded zone with eye-level exhibits for toddlers! And the whole family will be wowed by the aquarium’s newish exhibition, "Into the Deep: Exploring Our Undiscovered Ocean." Some of the creatures in the 21 live exhibit areas are newly discovered and haven’t even been named yet. Mind blown! Stay at the hotel next door, InterContinental The Clement Monterey .

Disneyland Resort and California Adventure, Anaheim, CA

the ferris wheel at disneyland california adventure disneyland is a good housekeeping pick for best family vacation destinations

If you're looking for a Disney trip with young kids, Disneyland may have the edge over an Orlando vacay. Here are some reasons why: You can get on more rides without as much walking in California, so that means fewer tired and cranky kids. Summer weather is also usually better in Anaheim than in hot-and-humid Florida. And rides like Radiator Springs Racers, which looks like it’s right out of the movie Cars , are Cali-exclusive. The new Villas at Disneyland Hotel offer options that sleep up to 12 guests plus the decor is whimsical.

Breaking news, time travel: the best hotels for luxury watch shopping around the world.

Thanks for contacting us. We've received your submission.

From Switzerland and France to Japan and Germany, explore the best hotels for luxury watch shopping in Europe.

Shopping for a new luxury watch? Wind your way through the world’s ultimate travel destinations for browsing elite timepieces. We’ve rounded up a guide to the best new hotels in each region — along with the chic watches you’ll be inspired to buy while you’re there.

If you’re a Cartier, Chanel or Van Cleef & Arpels fan, head straight to Paris, which all three luxury watchmakers call home. Stay at the glittering Le Grand Mazarin (rooms from $730 per night), a brand-new hotel named, of course, after the 19-carat pink diamond once the star attraction of the French crown jewels and located two blocks from the Seine in the artsy Marais neighborhood. It’s the latest project from Maisons Pariente, a family-run luxe hotel firm run by the namesake property developer Patrick and his two chic daughters. The interior is fittingly opulent, all custom tapestries and leopard-print chairs, a typically maximalist flourish from Martin Brudnizki. (His latest NYC project was the equally Gallic Fouquet’s Barrière hotel in Tribeca.)

Le Grand Mazarin in Paris offers rooms from $730 per night.

SWITZERLAND

A person walking in a pool with a large ceiling at Six Senses Switzerland.

If you make it to Switzerland, don’t miss Audemars Piguet’s Hôtel des Horlogers (from $450 per night) property, right next to its headquarters. Fans of other brands, whether Blancpain or Breguet, might consider another ultra-luxe spot that just debuted deep in the Alps. The 45-room Six Senses Crans-Montana (from $1,400 per night) is intended as a year-round property. Sure, you can ski in and out from the runs in the surrounding pine forests of the Valais, but come summer, there are ample other outdoorsy appeals, like paddleboarding and water skiing on the neighboring lakes. All that, plus a Seve Ballesteros-designed 18-hole course, where the Omega European Masters is held each year, is nearby.

The Bellustar in Tokyo offers rooms from $525 per night.

The latest addition to Tokyo’s sky-scraping skyline is a new five-star property in Shinjuku, The Bellustar (from $525 per night), housed in the topmost floors of a mixed-use building. A rarity in Tokyo, its 97 suites are roomy, capping off at 3,000 square feet. Spend a few days here if you’re a Grand Seiko collector; it’s a chance to experience the reassuringly particular approach to luxury that defines Japan. Expect minimalist, muted-tone rooms paired with a huge assortment of on-site food and drink options — the views of Mount Fuji from the Sushi Jin-È space on the 45th floor are Insta catnip.

The Bulgari Hotel in Rome offers rooms from $1,700 per night.

Watchmakers are increasingly operating their own hotels, but few brands best Bulgari for a commitment to hospitality. It partnered with Marriott more than 20 years ago to open a series of hotels for fans of its brand, who are keen to immerse themselves in 24/7 bejeweled luxury. After roaming the world to open sites everywhere from Dubai to Bali, Bulgari Rome (from $1,700 per night) has finally come home. This year, it unveiled a 114-room spot in the Eternal City, barely a five-minute walk from the store on Via dei Condotti where the brand opened a boutique in 1905. Interiors are fittingly posh — checkout the multicolored marble bathrooms — and make sure to have an aperitivo on La Terrazza, its rooftop bar.

Raffles London offers rooms from $1,000 per night.

It might have been founded by a German and is now run from Switzerland, but where did that oh-so-proper brand, Rolex, start? Where else, but London? This fall, the British capital’s about to welcome the splashiest hotel debut there in decades: Raffles London (from $1,000 per night) at The OWO, a $1.7 billion, six-year reimagining of the Old War Office, which opened in 1906, just one year after founder Hans Wildorf created his iconic company. Stay in one of the 120 plush rooms here now to channel a throwback glamour — the Granville suite was named in honor of Britain’s answer to Mata Hari, Christine.

The Rosewood Munich offers rooms from $640 per night.

Germany is often overlooked as a luxury destination. But the opening this month of the newest Rosewood property, in Munich (from $640 per night), aims to draw attention to the country’s upscale offerings, including connoisseur-favored watches from Nomos Glashütte, the Saxony-based brand founded in the wake of the country’s reunification. A passion project for British-based interior designer Tara Bernerd, the Rosewood’s vibe is bold and elegant. The 132-room spot is a repurposing of two old buildings, including a palace (don’t miss the historic staircases); social spaces are arranged around a central courtyard, a typical Munich touch.

The South's Best Travel Stops 2024

These Southern convenience stores offer everything from barbecue and biscuits to friendly service and family-run charm.

best shopping travel destinations

When you hit the road to embark on a family trip to the beach, visit distant relatives for the holidays, or explore a new Southern small-town getaway with friends , there is the inevitability of needing to stop for three reasons. Firstly, to get gas. Secondly, to go to the bathroom. Lastly, because you’re bored and want a snack. Luckily, the South has been the founding ground of some of the best travel stops in the country, which our readers called out during this year’s South’s Best voting.

Some of these Southern travel stops are known for impressive regional in-house foods , including barbecue and biscuits, while others are applauded for offering the cleanest bathrooms, friendly staff, and good prices. Moreover, many of these convenience stores started as a family business decades ago, and remain so today. There might even be a state-specific travel stop you've never heard of, but can certainly depend on for your next road trip.

Whenever you’re in need of a driving break or something other than our Biscuits & Jam podcast to pass the time, you won’t go wrong at these 8 gas stations that originated in the South and were voted the best of the best.

South's Best Voting Process

An online survey was conducted by third-party agency Proof Insights among Southern Living consumers, asking them to rate their favorite places across the South for the South's Best Awards 2024 . The survey was fielded from July 12 to August 23, 2023, and had over 20,000 respondents.

This South Carolina convenience store has word-of-mouth popularity—particularly for its biscuits, and its fried chicken biscuits especially. You'll find plenty of locals stopping into Spinx for its hot-and-ready breakfasts each day, or telling newcomers to try it for themselves. The chain of more than 80 locations celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2022, with founder Stewart Spinx then being honored with a road being named after him in the chain's hometown of Greenville to honor a lifetime of contributions to the community.

7. Parker's Kitchen

Parker's Corporation

Parker’s founder and CEO Greg Parker opened his first convenience store in Midway, Georgia in 1976, and the chain has now expanded throughout Georgia and South Carolina, with plans to expand to Florida this year. Headquartered in Savannah, Georgia, Parker’s Kitchen offers slightly more hospitality-focused amenities beyond the basic gas station. At select locations, you can find in-house grab-and-go options, as well as a hot bar serving breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

Additionally, Parker’s is known for its focus on charity. In 2020, the Parker’s Community Fund was created by a generous donation of $20 million from Greg Parker and Parker’s to give back to the communities where the company does business.

6. Stuckey's

Founded in Georgia in 1937 by W.S. "Sylvester" Stuckey as a pecan stand, this old-fashioned roadside store that your Southern grandparents might remember from their childhoods is still thriving and full of nostalgia. Known for its beloved pecan logs, Stuckey's still offers many sweet Southern delicacies you won't find at other gas stations, such as nut brittle, chocolate-covered confections, and kettle corn. Presently, Stuckey's boasts around 50 licensed locations across the South.

5. 7-Eleven

Dubbing itself the "world's first convenience store" after its founding in 1927 in Dallas, Texas, 7-Eleven has since become a worldwide sensation with locations in over 15 countries numbering in the thousands. It's known for an impressive selection of ready-to-eat and in-house food and drink items, of which one is perhaps the most famous: the Slurpee. Each year on July 11th, the company gives out its iconic frozen Slurpees—which were originally licensed by 7-Eleven in 1965—for free in celebration of the company's birthday.

4. Circle K

JHVEPhoto/Getty Images

Circle K 's roots go back to 1951 when founder Fred Hervey purchased three Kay’s Food Stores in El Paso, Texas, which later became the gas station chain we know today and an internationally-branched operation. The dependable travel stop has made headlines in recent years for prioritizing its customers, even slashing its gas prices on the Thursday before Memorial Day to help out those hitting the road for the holiday weekend in 2023.

3. QuickTrip

QTR Corporation

This Oklahoma-based gas station chain goes back to 1958 and became so quickly successful that there were over 40 stores by 1967. In 2021, the company opened its 800th store in San Antonio, Texas . Those who are loyal customers of QuickTrip —whether in their hometowns or on road trips—are quick to assert its supremacy of one classic gas station food: the roller grill. The QuikTrip Roller Grill goes beyond dried-out meats to include everything from taquitos and egg rolls to smoked sausage and hot dogs. You can also choose from in-house grab-and-go sandwiches.

2. Love's Travel Stops

Courtesy of Love's Travel Stops

Founded in 1964 and headquartered in Oklahoma City, Love’s Travel Stops has 642 locations in 42 states, and it remains a family-run company 60 years later. Aside from a huge selection of snacks that provide weary Southern road-trippers a welcome break—including a company-branded candy line, which includes everything from gummy bears and peach rings to frosted heart pretzels and saltwater taffy—Love's goes above and beyond by giving back to the community. All locations donate a portion of their budget to a local nonprofit of their choice, and Love’s participates in the Children’s Miracle Network. (To date, Love’s has raised more than $50 million for Children's Miracle Network Hospitals.)

1. Buc-ee's

This behemoth of a convenience store, which started in 1982, might have been a Texan secret for a long time, but it's no longer confined to the Lone Star State—and folks throughout the South can't get enough of the souped-up gas station. Beyond the "cleanest bathrooms in America," you can expect unique amenities such as made-in-house food stations for everything including barbecue (get the brisket sandwich), fudge, breakfast tacos, kolaches (a Texan-Czech pastry), and much more.

Currently, Buc-ee’s has more than 45 stores, including in Texas, Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, South Carolina, Virginia, and Tennessee with plans to open new stores in Colorado, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, and Wisconsin.

The Best Bucket Bags for Beach Vacations, Day Trips, & Formal Nights Out

By Lauren Dana Ellman

All products featured on Condé Nast Traveler are independently selected by our editors. However, when you buy something through our retail links, we may earn an affiliate commission.

Crossbody bags, totes , fanny packs —certain purses lend themselves especially well to travel. But on some trips, you might find yourself leaning a little less practical and a little more on-trend. Enter: the bucket bag, which in recent months has been spotted on the arms of celebrities like Taylor Swift, Selena Gomez, and Katie Holmes. Sure, it won't lie flat across your body or hold quite as much as a backpack, but it will tie your look together when meandering in and out of shops in Paris or spending an afternoon at a cafe.

Named for their bucket-like silhouette, these bags come in a bevy of different materials, including straw, cotton, leather, nylon, and faux leather, to suit every style and environment. And thanks to their distinct shape—think: deep interiors, tall sides—these bags can comfortably fit everyday essentials like wallets, headphones, sunglasses, and, in some cases, laptops or tablets.

As you shop for the best bucket bags, you'll notice some have long straps to wear across your body or over the shoulder, while others have shorter handles; several options offer both for convenient carrying and versatility. While most don't offer zippers, we've selected ones with drawstring, snap, or magnetic closures, offering an added sense of security for travelers on the move.

Keep scrolling to check out our top picks for the best bucket bags from Traveler -approved brands like Cuyana, Madewell, and MZ Wallace, or jump straight to the section that best fits your needs.

For the beach

These beachy-chic bucket bags are the perfect accessory for your next trip to the shore. Most of our top picks are constructed with straw, a lightweight yet durable material. Those who prefer a softer material should consider the Bottega Veneta bucket bag, which is made with breathable mesh. The drawstring closure keeps belongings safe and secure, while the two pockets—one exterior zip, one interior slip—are ideal for your go-to essentials (phone, wallet, keys). As you scroll, you’ll notice most have at least one bonus feature such as a zippered or magnetic closure, multiple pockets, detachable straps, and, for a fashion-forward touch, chic leather accents.

Tan and brown leather bucket bag

For everyday

When it comes to selecting the best bucket bags for everyday wear, whether you're at home or on the road, options abound. Our favorites are made from durable materials like nylon, which is ideal for casual or daytime outings, or leather, which offers a more formal feel that can take you from day to night. Among our top picks: the Cuyana Linea bucket bag. Available in eight colors and three sizes, the sleek bag is constructed with supple Italian pebbled leather and features a removable and adjustable crossbody strap, an internal pocket, and a snap closure.

Black drawstring bucket bag

For nights out

On your next night out on the town, ditch the classic crossbody bag in favor of one of these more modern bucket bags. These statement-making selects either have a striking metallic hue or sparkly finish to add a little flair to pretty much any outfit. However, if we had to call out just one, we’d go with the Jimmy Choo Bon Bon Micro bucket bag for its hybrid clutch-bucket bag design thanks to the addition of a built-in top handle. That said, there are several other options to choose from below, ranging in both color and price.

Sparkly silver bucket bag with metal chain

Splurge-worthy bags

For a worth-it splurge, spring on one of these beautiful bucket bags that’ll last for seasons on end thanks to their timeless designs. Some of them are even A-lister–approved: For example, the gorgeous Stella McCartney Apple Skin bucket bag, which has an edgy croc-embossed pattern, a magnetic closure, and a detachable strap, was photographed on none other than Taylor Swift. In the same image, Selena Gomez was spotted carrying the slightly more refined Saint Laurent Le 37 bucket bag, which offers a stylish patent leather construction, subtle local detailing on the hook, a zippered interior pouch, a luxe suede lining, and four metal feet to prevent the bag from making direct contact with the floor—a major bonus when taking public transportation or zipping through the airport.

Black leather YSL bucket bag

Bags under $100

You don’t need to break the bank to snag a quality bucket bag—we've found quality options for under $100 each. Alo Yoga's crossbody bucket bag and Athleta's Excursion crossbody both have a sporty feel thanks to their nylon construction and multiple pockets, some of which are roomy enough to hold water bottles . Minimalist faux leather options from Anthropologie and Amazon offer a sleek but sophisticated feel, while the Essential Bucket tote from Madewell features a genuine leather construction and a spacious interior that’s large enough to hold a water bottle, 15-inch laptop, and a slew of smaller essentials.

"That Was 20 Years Ago, And I’m Sure It's Even Worse Now": People Are Sharing The Popular Travel Destinations They Did Not Enjoy

"The most fascinating part of the whole vacation was realizing that many people live for this place. The crowds…the prices…the lines. Never again for us."

Hannah Loewentheil

BuzzFeed Staff

When you travel to a new place, you probably leave home with high expectations. After all, you never know — you could be embarking upon your new favorite destination. But chances are, you haven't been head over heels for every locale you've visited.

So I asked the BuzzFeed Community to tell me about a destination that left them feeling underwhelmed. Here's what people said, along with comments from some redditors who love to travel.

1. "san francisco. the city was so crowded, i didn’t like the food, and the homelessness we saw all around us was extremely sad.".

Chinatown in San Francisco

2. "Virginia Beach. I love beaches, but Virginia Beach was murky and way overcrowded, and there was not much to do. It’s also near a military base, so having the constant military planes overhead was just unnerving."

3. " New York City . I remember coming up the escalator from Penn Station and immediately smelling pee. I recall walking streets that were lined with huge piles of stinky trash bags. It was so dirty everywhere, I was afraid to touch anything. That was 20 years ago, and I’m sure it's even worse now."

4. "Cabo San Lucas. There were massive ships blocking the horizon, panhandlers who would stand in front of you so you couldn’t see the ocean, and hordes of people getting in the way at every snorkeling spot. There were beach chairs packed like sardines. I love other parts of Mexico, but Cabo was generally an underwhelming experience."

5. "Venice. This Italian city was so crowded and overrun with tourists that I couldn't even stop to enjoy the sights and experiences around me."

6. "Disney World. My whole family was so excited about this Florida vacation, and we could not wait to get there. But we spent more money than planned (we still can’t even stomach how much we spent), we fought more as a family than we ever had, and we stood in line after line after line. The most fascinating part of the whole vacation was realizing that many people live for this place. The crowds…the prices…the lines. Never again for us."

7. "Bora Bora in French Polynesia. Yes, it’s so beautiful, but there’s really nothing to do beyond the beach. And you have to stay at one of the super-expensive resorts to actually make a trip there worthwhile. The other destinations in the Society Islands were more fun and still just as gorgeous."

8. "Egypt. I was so excited to go, but it was the worst place I’ve ever traveled to. Everyone tried to scam me relentlessly, from the airport clerk to the taxi drivers and the pyramids tour guide. People will tell you they recognize you from the day before, and they'll try to get you to ride their donkey and follow you even when you say multiple times that you’re not interested. It was impossible to walk half a block from my hotel to try to buy water without people constantly stopping me trying to get money in some way and some form. It was absolutely exhausting."

9. "Tulum, Mexico. It has beautiful beaches but is otherwise completely devoid of character. It's expensive and boring (unless your only goal is to party with other tourists)."

10. "Sydney. I found it to be a very boring city. I hate that I wasted so much of my time in Australia there. Bondi Beach was just okay, and seeing the iconic landmarks like the Opera House felt like checking things off a box. After that, I wasn't sure how to spend my time. The city has no personality. As soon as I hopped on a train west, I saw incredible landscapes and met truly genuine folks. You can do Sydney in a day or two. I wish I’d headed into the bush the minute my plane landed."

Crowded beach with people sunbathing and swimming, cityscape in the background

11. "Bali. This Indonesian island is still great in many ways, but it is increasingly overrun by obnoxious tourists and expats. I'm talking vapid, entitled influencer (or wannabe influencer) kinds of tourists/expats who wait in long lines to take selfies at historical/spiritual sites that they don't bother to learn anything about."

12. "Amsterdam. It was so crowded, chaotic, and easy to get run over by other tourists on bikes who've never ridden before. I feel like it's romanticized a lot, but the first time I visited, I was genuinely disappointed. It's definitely dirty on the streets, and the canals have a lot of waste drifting in them."

13. "Paris. What a colossally overrated city. I’ve always heard that Paris syndrome was a real thing, but I wasn’t prepared for how disappointed I was actually going to feel after visiting. The crowds were atrocious, the locals are not friendly, to say the least (even though I could speak some French), and everything was absolutely filthy. And this is all coming from a San Francisco native!"

A bustling city street scene at night with illuminated shop signs and a crowd of pedestrians

14. "Portland, Oregon. My best friend and I drove across the country from Florida to Washington, stopping for national parks, iconic eateries, and more. We read so many good things about Portland online, but in reality, it was one of the most depressing places I’ve ever seen. The hotel itself was awesome, but outside those doors, the downtown area was awful. There was tons of open drug use, naked people on the sidewalk, and the smell of bodily fluids everywhere. It was too much. We saw other parts of Oregon and loved it (especially Cannon Beach), but Portland was a major disappointment."

The sun sets over a busy avenue in downtown Portland

15. "Santorini was pretty disappointing, in my opinion. I feel like the photos I've seen online must have been photoshopped. I expected beautiful views but ended up having to crop graffiti and dirty buildings from the backgrounds of my pictures. It was also so expensive. The cheapest lunch option I found was a small wrap for 11 euros. It really felt like a tourist trap. Rhodes, on the other hand, was gorgeous and affordable. This island was home to beautiful beaches and old medieval buildings. I would avoid spending much time in Santorini, considering how much more expensive it is than other, equally beautiful Greek islands."

Crowd of people gathered in Santorini overlooking the sea and islands

16. "The Alhambra in Granada, Spain. It was so crowded, especially considering how small it actually is. I’d seen so many photos of the Alhambra where it looked so stunning, and I envisioned it being this serene palace. In reality, though, it was beyond packed with tour groups. Perhaps this is a good instance of how inaccurately social media can represent popular tourist destinations."

Group of people under an ornate archway, looking toward a building's intricate facade

17. "Atlantis in the Bahamas. You have this image of a luxury resort before visiting, but upon arrival, you find this incredibly overcrowded place (and that’s *before* the cruise people arrive and completely take over the property during daytime hours). Anytime there was an issue with service, they would blame it on 'island time.' If one more person said the phrase 'island time,' I was going to lose it. We had thousand-dollar excursions, private cabanas, and dinner reservations all cut short due to island time. Paradise Island was beautiful, but we're never going back to Atlantis."

Atlantis Caribbean beach resort, with white sand coastline

18. "Naples. I did a big European trip after college and spent about a month in Italy. Naples was EASILY the worst place we visited. Seedy, run-down, trashy, unsafe, you name it. Would never go back."

— u/ wanna_meet_that_dad

19. "Barcelona was disappointing to me. If you aren't a big drinker and don't want to do a lot of shopping, the city is kind of boring. Spend a day on the beach and another day touring, and you've pretty much done it all. That being said, going to La Sagrada Família was incredible. It made the rest of the boring trip totally worthwhile."

Crowded urban street with pedestrians walking, trees lining the path, and kiosks on the sides

20. "Nashville. Traffic is a nightmare, and you cannot enjoy the downtown area because it is so loud. All of the bars have music blaring out into the street, and it just blends together into one high-decibel sound wave. Not to mention, there are people who are homeless passed out in the middle of the sidewalks. The city reeks of urine and sewage, and on weekends, you cannot even walk without getting bumped into. Don’t even get me started on all the party buses, tractors, and pedal taverns that further congest things and add to the noise, with everyone in town for sorority events and bachelorette parties."

A busy street at night with neon signs and crowds in Nashville

21. "Dubai in the United Arab Emirates. It's very artificial feeling, and the whole city has a crowded amusement park feel. There's nothing eye-catching. It feels like a lesser clone of Singapore."

22. " Las Vegas , for me. I know it's a very popular tourist spot in the US, but I just can't stand going there. Like most people, I was excited to go at first, but just taking a big whiff of the air there makes me gag now. The streets can be really dirty, and traffic is terrible. It is really dry, and I personally can't stand not being near a body of water."

23. "The Big Island of Hawaii . I recently went on a trip to the island. So many people rave about the views and the hiking trails past beautiful waterfalls. I was there for two weeks and spent roughly half of my time driving. Any waterfall 'hikes' were more aptly just short walks from the parking lot and up a couple of stairs. The volcanoes were cool, the weather was nice, and the views were okay, but I don’t think I would spend the time or the money to go back."

Visitors beside a rocky stream with a waterfall in a lush landscape

24. "Costa Rica. This country felt like a tourist trap. In many places, you have no option but to stay at an all-inclusive resort and purchase travel packages for adventure sports like zip lining, horseback riding, and more. There isn't much opportunity to deviate from these packages, and it's also very expensive. I felt that it was hard to learn anything about the local or Indigenous culture."
