Other T-Mobile plans

We're highlighting the best T-Mobile cell phone plans for particular situations, but these aren't your only option at the Uncarrier. Here's a quick summary of the other plans currently on offer at T-Mobile.

T-Mobile unlimited data plans

Why you can trust Tom's Guide Our writers and editors spend hours analyzing and reviewing products, services, and apps to help find what's best for you. Find out more about how we test, analyze, and rate.

  • Magenta Max ($85/month): One of T-Mobile's older offerings, this plan includes the same travel benefits as Go5G Plus, though you only get 5GB of data to use in Mexico and Canada. You're also limited ot 40GB of hotspot data.
  • Magenta ($70/month): Essentially, the Magenta plan is just like the Go5G plan, but with less hotspot data (5GB instead of 15GB) and only 5GB of data when traveling in Mexico and Canada.
  • Essentials ($60/month): This used to be T-Mobile's cheapest unlimited data plan, with only 3G speeds for hotspot data and few other perks. Your data speeds can be slowed if you use more than 50GB in a month.
  • Essentials Saver ($50/month): If you need only one line of data and can bring your own phone, you can sign up for this cheap unlimited plan, which otherwise has the same perks as Essentials. This is the only option families can't sign up for.

T-Mobile senior plans

  • Go5G Next 55 ($120/month for two lines): The senior version of Go5G Next, this plan lets you upgrade your smartphone every year.
  • Go5G Plus 55 ($100/month for two lines): Anyone 55 years or older can get a discounted rate on the Go5G Plus plan, while receiving the same streaming and travel benefits included with unlimited data.

T-Mobile prepaid plans

  • 12GB plan: T-Mobile's most expensive prepaid plan costs $35/month.
  • 6.5GB plan: Like the 3.5GB connect plan, T-Mobile adds 500MB of data every year through 2025. This plan costs $25/month.
  • 1GB plan: T-Mobile's cheapest prepaid plan is for people with minimal data needs. It costs $10/month.

Low-cost T-Mobile alternatives

Pricing on the best T-Mobile cell phone plans compares very well to comparable service at AT&T and Verizon , particularly when it comes to unlimited data plans. But there's a way to get T-Mobile service for even less — turn to a discount carrier that uses T-Mobile's network to provide low-cost coverage.

Such a service is known as a mobile virtual network operator (MVNO), and there are plenty that use T-Mobile for coverage. Our favorite happens to be Mint Mobile (which T-Mobile is actually in the process of buying). Mint offers four plans , ranging in price between $15 (5GB) and $30 (unlimited data) per month. You get those low rates by paying for your service in advance — prepaying for a year of data gets you the very best rate at Mint.

Mint's a popular choice because it includes full coverage on T-Mobile, including 5G speeds if you've got a comparable phone. As with any MVNO, you do risk seeing your traffic slowed if the network is congested and T-Mobile prioritizes its own customers.

Other MVNOs using T-Mobile's network include Tello , TextNow and Metro by T-Mobile. The latter service is owned and operated by T-Mobile.

T-Mobile cell phone plans

T-Mobile is not just a good carrier — it's currently the runner-up in our best phone phone carriers rankings. This position comes down to a couple of benefits and factors T-Mobile does very well.

When it comes to terms of plans and offers, T-Mobile is one of the most diverse options. It offers a wide array of prices that span family plans, unlimited data choices, prepaid plans and more.

Past that, our LTE network testing showed that T-Mobile is one of the faster carriers available, and subsequent testing by third parties backs that claim. In Ookla's most recent testing , T-Mobile was rated the fastest mobile operator in the U.S. with the best download and upload speeds.

T=Mobile also ranks well in 5G performance testing by third parties, with RootMetrics currently rating T-Mobile tops for 5G speeds and availability. (Verizon's 5G is judged to be more reliable.) T-Mobile's 5G service reaches more than 330 million people and through its incorporation of Sprint, 5G speeds have increased further by adding Sprints 5G into the spectrum. T-Mobile now offers its fastest 5G to 300 million people after an aggressive upgrade program.

T-Mobile also has weekly giveaways and a host of incentives for its customers. The carrier's blend of affordability, features and coverage make it a top choice if you're looking for a wireless provider who offers something more than just a low monthly bill.

Why I swear by T-Mobile for my international phone and data plan

Alberto Riva

Should you go with T-Mobile, AT&T or Verizon for a cellphone plan, if you are a frequent traveler outside of North America? Or should you choose Google Fi , which offers connection to local cell networks in around 200 countries for $10 per gigabyte of data, and 20 cents per minute of voice call?

I have no doubt: For me, T-Mobile is the way to go.

I pay $147 a month for the T-Mobile One Plus International plan (T-Mobile One plans have been recently renamed to Magenta) giving me unlimited data in 210 countries and territories, for myself and an additional line, which my wife uses. There are no fees and voice calls to the U.S. from those 210 countries are 25 cents a minute. T-Mobile doesn't keep a list of those 210 places, but you can check here if your destination is covered. (A recent test on that page showed that in some of those 210, such as Bhutan and Zimbabwe, there were restrictions — for example, no data roaming was available in Bhutan.)

The free international data roaming is officially limited to 2G speeds but in practice I often get much faster 3G. (In Canada and Mexico, the plan offers 4G speeds.) That's historically been enough for me for loading maps and navigating, which is the most data-intensive activity I'm likely to use my phone for while off Wi-Fi overseas. The plan also offers unlimited international texting from the U.S. — nice to have, although I mostly use WhatsApp for texting.

But aren't we put off by the risk of having access to data roaming cut off by T-Mobile if we use it abroad extensively, as others have reported ?

T-Mobile warns that you should not use more than 50% of your voice or data off-network for an extended period of time. Users have reported having their access to data roaming blocked if they went over the limit for that "extended" time. The company doesn't define how long that is, but alerts users that the plan is meant for "traveling abroad, not staying abroad."

t mobile travel reddit

The TPG employees who are arguably the biggest travelers on our staff don't do T-Mobile, after all.

Our editor-at-large, Zach Honig, is a Google Fi aficionado; our senior points and miles reporter, JT Genter, who knows a thing or two about traveling all over the world, says he and his wife Katie "are happy paying the reasonable $10 per gigabyte data price and 20 cents per minute on overseas calls for seamless connection almost anywhere in the world ."

If I were JT or Katie, who cover 250,000 miles a year flying all over for TPG and sometimes stay for weeks in one country, or hyper-globe-trotter Zach , I might seriously give Google Fi a shot. But I'm a far less hard-core traveler; this year I'm barely hitting 80,000 flight miles and a lot of my travel over the past few years has been quick in-and-outs to various countries in Europe, Asia and Latin America. Even factoring in longer vacations abroad, my wife and I are nowhere near that 50% limit set by T-Mobile.

When it comes to connectivity, I value above all the convenience of taking my phone off airplane mode as soon as the wheels hit the runway and being ready to text, email and Slack with my co-workers in the New York and London offices. With T-Mobile, I have no worries about additional charges and nothing to configure or tweak: It's good to go from the first second until I hop on a plane out of there.

Related: The ultimate guide to international smartphone use

It works even in remote locations. "I had service at the top of a volcano in Guatemala," says our weekend editor, Jane Frye, who was there with TPG colleagues for a trip with PeaceJam . JT says that on a recent trip to Liberia for another PeaceJam event, "everybody on T-Mobile had service," while he and Katie on Fi did not.

Google Fi is better "if you're trying to do intense work," says JT, who recalls filing stories for the site from a bus in Bosnia using his phone as a mobile hot spot. I have used the hot spot function of Samsung Galaxy phones on T-Mobile's international roaming, but it isn't the biggest plus for me.

t mobile travel reddit

But here's where T-Mobile really earns my business: The One Plus International plan, now Magenta Plus, includes free Internet for the entire flight on planes equipped with Gogo in-flight Wi-Fi , as well as Netflix. Those are huge pluses for me.

I do most of my flying on Delta Air Lines, whose fleet has Gogo. That means I get in-flight internet for free, for the entire flight. Even if the free internet only works on mobile phones, not on laptops, it's a really great perk. Curiously, sometimes the splash screen after I log in tells me I have one hour of free internet — like I would on a simple T-Mobile One plan — but that's not true. I can go all flight long, and that includes international long haul.

t mobile travel reddit

Gogo internet is also available on some American Airlines and United Airlines flights , which comes in handy for me a couple of times a year on average. Not a big deal, but nice.

However, my favorite feature may well be Netflix. Under the T-Mobile Magenta Plus plan (formerly called One Plus), T-Mobile covers the $12.99 monthly fee for the Netflix Standard streaming subscription , for two screens at a time. As someone who's happily cut the cord and ditched cable, I'm very happy that T-Mobile is picking up the tab for the service that has replaced a lot of my cable TV. And while someone else is watching Netflix at home, I can watch on my phone while on the road, in high definition. That helps make T-Mobile's Magenta plan an easy choice for me.

This story has been updated to clarify that free Wi-Fi under the T-Mobile plan described in the article covers the entire flight, not just one hour. It also has been updated tto reflect that under the plan, T-Mobile covers the entire $12.99 monthly cost of a Netflix streaming subscription.

Google Fi vs T Mobile for Travelers: International Roaming Comparison

This post may contain affiliate links. As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

Did you know Google Project Fi and T Mobile phones are eligible for FREE texting and data while traveling internationally? Find out which one is better for you with this comparison on speeds, costs, and coverage before you commit.

When T-Mobile first came out with free international roaming, it was game-changing for travelers.  I made the switch without hesitation and recommended it whole-heartedly to other travelers.  At least, until Google Fi came out.  Then there was another player in this field — and possibly one who did it better.

These days, it’s a battle of Google Project Fi vs T Mobile.  Who does it better?  It depends.

**Side note: Not all T-Mobile plans include international coverage.  You’re looking specifically for T-Mobile ONE, T-Mobile ONE Plus, or T-Mobile International…but from here on out, I’ll abbreviate as T-Mobile.**

Project Fi vs TMobile for Travelers

Why do you need international roaming anyway?

Both T-Mobile One and Google Fi advertise data coverage and texting while abroad at no extra cost.  For T-Mobile, it’s 140+ countries; for Fi, 135.  Travelers are no longer forced to buy expensive data add-ons, which I love.  These days, having a cell phone abroad is no longer a luxury — it’s something we expect and rely on.

Yes, of course you could buy a sim card in whatever country you land in.  In many places, it’s less than $10 for a sim card and 1 GB of data.  However, I’ve definitely been that person standing in line in Laos and struggling to get it set up (what a waste of time).  I’ve also been that person who misses important calls because my Vietnamese sim card came with a Vietnamese phone number so when folks at home called my “normal” phone number, I had no idea until two weeks later.

Using international roaming through T-Mobile and Google Fi solves these issues.  As long as your roaming is turned on, everything works just like at home.

When it comes to Phone Calls and Texting, it’s a Tie

Assuming you’re using a compatible device, both T-Mobile and Google Fi offer free wi-fi calling to U.S. based phone numbers.  That means if you’re in Spain on vacation, you can call your Mom back home for free.  You can also text your friends as often as you want, all for no extra cost.

In a second scenario, if you’re dialing an international phone number, both companies charge 20 cents per minute.  For example, you’re in England and calling a local restaurant to make a dinner reservation.  It’s not free, but since both companies charge the same amount, I’ll call it a wash.

Hint: Use apps like Whatsapp to dial for free instead of paying cell phone charges!  Or just ask the hotel concierge 🙂

project fi international cell phone plans

Google Fi vs T Mobile Data Speeds

This is one main difference between Google Fi and T-Mobile.

Fi almost always offers the fastest data speeds available while abroad.  If a region has 4G LTE service, you’ll get LTE speeds.  Just like at home, there may be rural areas with slower service, in which case you’ll get the fastest available.  That makes it easy to get answers to questions quickly or share photos on Facebook.

T-Mobile, on the other hand, only offers international speeds up to 128 kbps.  That’s perfectly fine for checking emails and even some basic web searches.  You may have to wait a minute to calculate Google Maps directions and you’re certainly not streaming YouTube videos to pass time on a bus ride.

For an extra $10/month, T-Mobile will sell you an upgrade to T-Mobile ONE Plus which includes faster  international data.  If you’re a frequent traveler and heavy data user, you’ll want to pay the upcharge.

One last note: Google Fi allows tethering at full speed; T-Mobile limits your tether speeds even at home.  If you want to use your cell phone data to connect your laptop to the internet, that might be a factor for you to consider.

That Brings Me to the Costs: Google Fi vs TMobile Prices

Google Fi pricing is basic math: $20 base fee (for unlimited calls and texts) + $10 per gigabyte of data, whether it’s used at home or abroad.  For someone who uses 2 GB of data per month, that’s $40 in fees (20 + 20) and someone who uses 5 GB will pay $70/month.  There is no unlimited data package.

If you add a family member to the same plan, each additional line is only a $15 base fee, so you’ll get a small savings.

project fi rates

T-Mobile pricing  is more variable.  A single line starts at $70 including unlimited talk, text, and data.  It also includes taxes and fees (compared to about ~$5 on Project Fi).  Prices per line drop as you add more lines: it’s $60/line for 2 phones, $47 each for 3 phones, or $40 per line for 4 lines.

As a reminder, you have to pay an extra $10 per line per month if you want data speeds to be an apples-to-apples comparison with Project Fi.

So what does that mean?  You need to look at your own usage to determine which is cheaper.

  • If you need a single line and don’t use a lot of data, it’s cheaper to use Google Fi.
  • If you have a family of 4 and you all consume a lot of data, it’s cheaper to use T Mobile.
  • For two lines, break even is at 4 GB of data per person.

Who Has Better Phones?

Hands down, T-Mobile offers way more selection.  You can bring pretty much any phone and expect it to be compatible.  That means you can find your preferred operating system and pricepoint and be happy.

Google Fi, at least in the USA, uses wi-fi calling whenever possible.  They lease towers from T-Mobile and US Cellular to pick up the difference, but it defaults to wi-fi calling.  Because of this, you NEED to use a Google Fi phone.  I’ve tested my Fi sim card in other phones and there is a noticeable difference in call quality.  That limits your choices considerably.

Google Fi is currently only selling phones in the Pixel family as well as select Samsung and Motorola phones.

T Mobile vs Google Fi: What I Like Best About Each One

T-Mobile includes a lot of extras in their plans, like 1 hour of free wi-fi on Gogo equipped planes for each flight.  They also give you free phone calls in Canada and Mexico and free Netflix streaming if you have 2 or more lines.  Downloading the T-Mobile Tuesdays app also gives you random freebies each week, like movie tickets.

Google Fi doesn’t offer extras, but it builds in a lot of flexibility.  You don’t have to lock yourself into a certain amount of data.  If you use 1 GB of data in January, that’s all they charge you for, even if you use 3 GB the next month.  They also let you pause your service (more on that in a minute).

US-Based Cell Service — I Find Coverage Gaps with Both

I give credit to T-Mobile for working to expand their coverage.

That said, both carriers have coverage gaps in the USA.  All the marketing claims of the world are irrelevant based on my personal experience.  I’m a nature-lover, hiker, and spend time in small towns.  I  almost always  have talk coverage regardless of carrier, but while testing T Mobile vs Google Fi, I often had zero data (from both) in rural areas.

I have an AT&T plan with beautiful coverage in most national parks or my family farm and Verizon is even better.  Of course, neither of those have affordable international data roaming.

project fi vs t mobile rural coverage

My Personal Solution: Yes, I Have 2 Phone Plans

I have a Straight Talk (on the AT&T network) plan that I use for my day-to-day use.  It has great coverage in the places I go and keeps my monthly bill pretty low.  It also solves 99% of my coverage gaps within the USA.

I supplement with Google Fi for international trips.

What do I mean by that?  I have a Google Fi plan that I pause while I’m home and resume service for every trip.  You are not billed while your service is paused , so my talk/text fees are pro-rated if I only need international service for a partial month.  For data, I pay the same $10 per gigabyte that everyone pays.  I have a US-based phone number that my family and friends can use to get ahold of me.

It works smashingly.  Pausing is as simple as clicking a button in your online account and resuming is also instant.  Best of both worlds.

That said, I think for people who live in urban areas (and who rarely travel to rural locales), it’ll still be cheaper to ONLY use Google Fi or T-Mobile rather than holding two plans.

The Bottom Line: T Mobile vs Google Fi

If you are a light to moderate data user (let’s say 3 GB per month), I think Google Fi wins.  They have faster data coverage abroad, which impacts usability to a large degree.  Their customer service is phenomenal and I found that my phone always found international networks quickly and easily (with T-Mobile, sometimes I had to restart my phone if I moved between networks).

For power users and/or family plans, you can save big by using T-Mobile instead — even if you have to pay the extra fee for faster international data.  It’s also the best choice for iPhone aficionados, of which I am not.

Either way, frequent travelers should consider switching to either Google Fi or T Mobile.  Once you’ve traveled with free international roaming, you’ll never go back!

Switch Now!  As mentioned, I prefer Google Fi  but some users may prefer T-Mobile .

I’m like you – 2 plan household. We use Cricket Wireless for our family (5 lines with 5GB each of high speed data for $100/month); but signed up for Fi for international trips.

We also got 4 data only SIMs with Fi account for use in the kids phones abroad – but still only one bill. Love how easy it is to pause service for 3 months at a time. The best part is Fi’s speed -amazingly fast even in small countries like Malta.

Great post!

@TJ, Thanks for chiming in! Somehow 2 plans makes sense for me. I haven’t personally tried Cricket, but that’s a great deal!

I’ve been using Google Fi for about six months now and it’s been great. I was concerned about the constant switching between cell providers, but it’s been incredibly seamless. I’ve also been able to call my cousin and brother who both live abroad and it only costs $0.01/min. Definitely happy I switched!

@Jason, Thanks for sharing your experience!

“As a reminder, you have to pay an extra $10 per line per month if you want data speeds to be an apples-to-apples comparison with Project Fi.”

This statement is wildly inaccurate. The additional $10 for T-Mobile one Plus Data only gives you a bump from 128kb to 256kb. Project Fi is full speed LTE, an order of magnitude faster. There is no “High speed” option for T-mobile.

So you mentioned a considerable drop in call quality with Project Fi on a non-Fi phone. Was the data still okay tho? I’m looking for something that will let me have LTE for maps and music streaming while I’m in Europe for 15 weeks later this year.

I’m thinking if I can keep my iPhone as a main phone for data and maybe get a simple phone-call only prepaid phone internationally I could be good. But I’m wary about doing that if the data quality suffers.

@Colie, I had no problems with data so your plan sounds okay.

After each using AT&T’s Passport plan (only once, a few years ago, when it only gave you 300Mb of data, not 1GB for $60/each) we became another two plan family. My husband and I travel internationally quite a bit, so I swap my iPhone for my “Travel phone”- a Nexus 5x (Fi phone), perfect for calls and data/text (you can find them for less than $100 on eBay) while my husband uses his old 6s iPhone, with one of the free data sims (you can get up to 10) and it works great for data and texting. It costs us about $25/week traveling for both devices (maps, checking sight tips, uploading photos to social media, buying tickets, using apps like Citymapper- great if you’re on the Moscow or any other subway!). We still keep AT&T at home because we have a deal and the coverage is great, but would only use Fi for travel (oh, and then pause the service till the next trip!)-

You said you have a Straight Talk plan for domestic use and a Project Fi plan for international, but the Fi plan only works on certain phones, so do you have one or two phones?

I have a Straight Talk plan on a Samsung Galaxy J7 Sky Pro that is pretty cheap, so I’d need to get a second phone to have a Project Fi plan?

Last time I was overseas for extended time, I tried adding Verison international to the Verison plan I had at the time, Totally a hassle trying to get Verison to pause global service when I was back in U.S.

Thanks, Tanis

@Tanis, I have a Pixel 2 which strangely enough does not need a Project Fi sim card to use sim service. So I keep the Straight Talk sim card in 100% of the time and switch (within the Fi app) to Fi service when I travel abroad.

That said, my husband has used Fi service on an Amazon Fire phone and Nexus 5X, neither of which are Fi phones officially.

How to create a Subreddit on desktop and mobile

Anita George

Few social media sites are as popular as Reddit. Regardless of what you’re interested in, there’s probably a thriving community for you to interact with on the platform. Known as subreddits, these communities are home to topics like gaming, world news, science, movies, and more. If you can’t find a subreddit with your particular interest, Reddit makes it easy to create your own Reddit community.

Step 1: Log in and click on Create Community

Step 2: come up with a unique name for your subreddit, step 3: fill out the form and click create community, step 4: promote your new subreddit.

  • Step 5: Don’t forget your Modmail

Running a successful Reddit community isn’t easy – but the process of starting one only takes a few minutes. Keep in mind that you’ll want to keep a close eye on your subreddit to prevent it from being shut down or turning into a wasteland with no users, but running a subreddit can be a lot of fun when done properly. If you prefer, you can also create a private community that only your friends can join, giving you a place to hang out beyond Twitter and TikTok.

Interested in creating your own Reddit community? Here’s an in-depth look at how to build a subreddit.

  • How to control your computer from your phone
  • How to pin a website to the taskbar in Windows
  • How to deactivate your Instagram account (or delete it)

To create a subreddit, you’ll need an account. But not just any account will do. According to Reddit’s help section for Mods (subreddit moderators), you’ll need a Reddit account that has existed for at least 30 days and “a minimum amount of positive ‘karma.'” (Reddit members earn “karma” points when they post popular links or comments.) The minimum amount of karma points required to be allowed to create a subreddit is kept secret from the public (to prevent spam), but according to Reddit, the number “isn’t prohibitively high.”

You can create a Reddit account by clicking the blue Sign Up button on reddit.com . Then, once your account is at least 30 days old and you feel like you’ve racked up a lot of karma points, you can try to create a subreddit. To do this: Log in to your Reddit account and scroll down your front page until you see the Create Community button on the right-hand side of the screen. If you’re able to click on it, great! That means your account is eligible to create a subreddit. If not, your account either needs to wait a little longer or you need to earn more karma points.

Note: If you’re looking to create a community using the mobile Reddit app, you’ll instead need to open the menu by clicking on the three horizontal bars at the top corner of your screen, then scrolling through the options until you see Create a Community .

Coming up with a good subreddit name can actually be pretty difficult. It has to be memorable and short ( 20 characters or less, to be exact) . And according to Reddit, as of January 2020, there are over 100,000 communities on Reddit, which means your chosen name could have already been taken. If it has, you’ll need to come up with another one.

To check if your subreddit name idea is available, click here to search all subreddits. If no other subreddits with the same name come up under the name you searched, you can move on to step 3.

Once you’ve picked a name, you’ll need to actually create the subreddit. It doesn’t take much more than filling out a number of fields in a web form and ticking a few boxes. (And the form itself has been streamlined quite a bit in the past few years, so it’s even easier to fill out.) Here’s what you need to know.

Name: This is the name of your subreddit, and it’s the one that shows up in the URL for your subreddit. So no pressure, right? Remember: It has to be 20 characters or less. (The form itself specifically says between 3 and 21 characters.) More importantly, whatever name you type in that text box is whatever name your subreddit is stuck with forever. You won’t be able to change it or even be allowed to fix the capitalization of it later, so make sure that the way it looks in this box is the way you want it to look forever. Other things to remember: No spaces. Avoid subreddit names that only feature trademarked names. No special characters except underscores.

Topics: In this section, choose the topics that your community will cover. Start by clicking on the drop-down menu labeled Add a Primary Topic and then choose a topic from the menu that appears. Then click on the blank text box underneath your chosen primary topic to open another drop-down menu of other topics to choose from. Select the topics that are related to your subreddit. You can choose up to 25 topics.

Description: Use this section to write a description of your subreddit to help explain its purpose to new members.

Community Type: Choose from three options to set your subreddit’s privacy level: Public , Restricted , and Private . Public means your subreddit allows anyone to post, view, or comment on it. Restricted means that while your subreddit is viewable by anyone, only approved users are allowed to post in it. And finally, Private subreddits are communities in which the content is only viewable by approved users and posts can only be submitted by approved users.

Adult Content: In this section, you can opt to put an age restriction on your subreddit. Do this by marking it as NSFW (not safe for work). This means that only Reddit users 18 years or older will have access to your subreddit. If you want this age restriction for your subreddit, simply tick the box next to the phrase NSFW 18+ Year Old Community .

After you’ve finished setting your preferences on this page and you are satisfied with your subreddit name, click on the Create Community button at the bottom of the web form to submit it.

Once your subreddit is up and going, you’re going to want to let other redditors know it exists. One way to get your subreddit some attention is to submit a link to your subreddit to the /r/newreddits community (New Reddits). You can also post links in other subreddits that are similar or related to your subreddit’s topic. Other people will likely want to engage with your content if they’re interested in that topic already.

If you want to start sharing links to your subreddit on other subreddits, make sure you double-check that your advertising posts line up with each subreddit’s policies. For instance, /r/newreddits solely authorizes one announcement post for each novel subreddit. If you publish your new subreddit more than one time, the moderators could ban you from their subreddit. A big part of being a great Redditor is being respectful and considering your fellow Redditors and the platform’s specific rules, regardless of if you agree with them or not.

Step 5: Don’t forget your Modmail

Now that you have developed a subreddit, you have stepped into a new Reddit role — you are now a moderator (also referred to as a mod). When you are a subreddit mod, there are certain things you can do . With this new title, you have the ability to do things like delete items, lock comments or threads from getting more responses, and even label certain content as NSFW.

You’ll also have free access to a unique feature known in the Reddit world as Modmail. Modmail serves as a sort of email inbox for mods that you can use to communicate with fellow mods or handle questions and inquiries from other Reddit users. To access your Modmail, you must first select the shield symbol located on the Reddit home page. You’ll see it in the upper right-hand corner of the screen. Another way you can access Modmail is by following this link: mod.reddit.com .

Share All sharing options for: Dragon’s Dogma 2’s surprise microtransactions are making people angry, but should they?

A Fighter stands in the center of the Vernmouth town square in Dragon’s Dogma 2.

Capcom’s fantasy role-playing game Dragon’s Dogma 2 has launched at last to critical acclaim — but reactions from some players are much harsher. At the center of these complaints is a suite of 21 downloadable items Capcom released without warning alongside Dragon’s Dogma 2 across PC, PlayStation, and Xbox . Most of them are single-use in-game items enabling features like new fast-travel locations, the ability to change characters’ appearance, and combat revives.

On Steam , where Dragon’s Dogma 2 was a much-hyped and wishlisted title, user reviews sit at “Mostly Negative” at time of writing. Alongside the microtransactions, critical players cite the game’s poor performance on PC, and the developer’s use of the unpopular anti-cheat and anti-piracy software Denuvo. (Polygon has contacted Capcom for comment and will update if we hear back.)

Capcom is often criticized for tagging a lot of microtransactions onto largely single-player games, like the Resident Evil 4 remake or Monster Hunter Rise . If Dragon’s Dogma 2 is drawing more ire than usual, it could be because of the way the items on sale interact with Dragon’s Dogma 2 ’s intentionally challenging and restrictive game design .

It’s important to note that all the items for sale can be obtained during normal gameplay, so in theory, Capcom is only offering an additional convenience to players. If you play the game for long enough, you’ll end up with most of these items in your inventory, such as the Rift Crystals that allow you to hire pawn party members at a higher level than your character to help out with tough fights (500 Rift Crystals cost $0.99, while a pack of 2,500 costs $4.99).

A list of all the Dragon’s Dogma 2 microtransactions on Steam at the time of this writing. They cost $41.79 in total

But many of the items for sale are rare, expensive, or difficult to obtain in the game. Wakestones , for example, allow you to revive your character in the middle of combat, and are rare enough that players are advised to save them for use during only the most challenging encounters. But now the temptation is there to just buy your way out of trouble for $0.99.

The Art of Metamorphosis item , which allows you to change your character’s appearance, can be bought from a vendor, but comes at a high price: 500 Rift Crystals. That’s too much to afford early in the game, and sellers have limited inventory. Capcom is selling these for $1.99.

The availability of Portcrystals for $2.99 each has caused some players to accuse Capcom of selling fast travel, but this isn’t strictly accurate. Fast travel is very restricted in Dragon’s Dogma 2 by design, to encourage exploration of the open world and to make distances feel significant (a choice that can be frustrating to some players). Portcrystals allow players to create new fast-travel points within the game, which is useful because only a handful exist in major towns. But to use Portcrystals you need Ferrystones, another rare resource.

Dragon’s Dogma 2 player activating a portcrystal

Tellingly, Capcom has chosen not to make Ferrystones available as microtransactions, indicating that literally selling fast travel was a design Rubicon the development team was unwilling to cross. Nonetheless, selling Portcrystals is still a controversial choice, given how extremely rare this item is in the game — in our first 50 hours with the game, we only found one, and it was as a quest reward.

Dragon’s Dogma 2 is a single-player game, so it’s easy for players to simply ignore these microtransactions if they find them distasteful. If there’s an issue, it’s how they interact with the game’s distinctive design ethos, which is to use the scarcity of these items (among other things) to make the experience more challenging and immersive. Selling the items would seem to either break that ethos, or call it into question by suggesting scarcity was a sales tactic all along.

Plus, there’s a $15 bundle on sale that includes 1,500 Rift Crystals and one each of all the DLC items (notably excluding the Portcrystal). This bundle is also included in the game’s $80 Deluxe Edition, so there is an option for people willing to part with a bit more money.

Capcom briefly commented on the situation in a post on Steam Friday, noting that players could get the items “in-game or as paid DLC items,” and that it was working on fixes for major PC issues. If it were to go into more detail, it might offer a similar argument to Tekken producer Katsuhiro Harada, who recently argued that this kind of monetization was a necessary countermeasure for the rapidly rising cost of game development.

Regardless of the reasoning behind them, Dragon’s Dogma 2 ’s microtransactions are unlikely to tarnish its reputation for good; it’s an engrossing game that seems likely to captivate even more players than its cultish predecessor . But they’re another sign of the increasing pressure on AAA game development — and that’s probably here to stay.

Update: We’ve updated this story to mention a post from Capcom on Steam about PC performance and microtransactions.

Ohio mother who left toddler alone when she went on vacation is sentenced in child’s murder

An Ohio woman whose toddler died after she left her alone for more than a week while she went on vacation was sentenced to life in prison without parole Monday, the Cuyahoga County prosecutor said.

Kristel Candelario, 32, pleaded guilty last month t o aggravated murder and endangering children in connection with the death of her 16-month-old daughter, Jailyn, last year.

Candelario left for vacation June 6 and left Jailyn alone. She visited Detroit and Puerto Rico, the prosecutor’s office said.

When she returned on June 16, she found Jailyn dead and called police, authorities said.

Jailyn Calendario mom mother sentencing court legal law child death

Jailyn died of starvation and severe dehydration due to pediatric neglect, Dr. Elizabeth Mooney, the deputy Cuyahoga County medical examiner, said in court Monday. The manner was ruled homicide.

The child was extremely dehydrated and emaciated, weighing 13 pounds, 7 pounds less than in her last doctor's visit less than two months before, Mooney said.

Mooney, who conducted the autopsy, called Jailyn's death "one of the most tragic and unfortunate cases I’ve had in my career thus far." She said the child could have suffered for possibly a week.

In a statement Monday, prosecutor Michael C. O’Malley called Jailyn “a beautiful baby girl who was taken from this world due to her mother’s unimaginable selfishness.”

Candelario told the court Monday that “every day I ask forgiveness from God and from my daughter Jailyn.”

She also asked forgiveness from her other daughter and from her parents.

Jailyn Calendario.

Candelario’s attorney, Derek Smith, said that no one was trying to excuse her behavior but that Candelario was struggling emotionally and was overwhelmed as a single mother of two children.

Candelario had tried to harm herself earlier in 2023 and she had been placed on antidepressants, which she stopped taking without tapering down in dosage as required, which can cause side effects, Smith told the court. Candelario was "not thinking clearly," he said.

“I am not trying to justify my actions, but nobody knew how much I was suffering and what I was going through,” Candelario said through an interpreter.

Assistant Cuyahoga County Prosecutor Anna Faraglia told the court Monday that Candelario had left Jailyn alone for two days immediately before she left on vacation.

"The thought of this child dying every day while she's having fun — humanity can't stomach that," Faraglia said. "And those are the actions that need to be punished. She abandoned her daughter and left her for dead."

In sentencing Candelario, Cuyahoga County Common Pleas Judge Brendan Sheehan noted that the police and the medical professionals involved called it one of the most horrific cases they’d ever seen.

“It stunned people across this world, because it defies one of the basic human responsibilities,” Sheehan said. He called it “the ultimate act of betrayal.”

Seattle Seahawks v Carolina Panthers

The NFL announced on Tuesday that they are going to play at least one game on Christmas Day in 2024. The NFL has previously played games on Christmas Day before, but never when the games were on a Wednesday. The story was originally reported by the Wall Street Journal .

In December 2023, the NFL’s vice president of media distribution Hans Schroeder told the Wall Street Journal that the league was not planning on placing NFL games on Christmas when it fell on a Tuesday or Wednesday . Something obviously changed and it’s not hard to figure out.

In 2022, Christmas games averaged about 22 million viewers. In 2023, it jumped to 28.4 million average viewers. Schroeder said this week that the league changed their mind after seeing the ratings in 2023. He said there would be at least one game but probably two in 2024.

The biggest technical question most people are asking is “How is the NFL going to play games just a few days after a Sunday contest?” In short, they aren’t.

In Week 15, the NFL uses flexible scheduling to move multiple games to Saturday. Over the past few seasons, it’s been three games on Saturday the weekend before Christmas with college football on their hiatus before bowl season really picks up. From Saturday to Wednesday is the same four-day window that teams typically receive for a turnaround from Sunday to Thursday Night Football. In addition to those six Saturday teams, the previous week’s Thursday night teams will be able to play on six days rest. This gives the schedule-makers eight teams to choose from to fill two or four spots.

The NFL has only played two Wednesday games since 1948, and both contests saw teams that were well-rested, not playing on short weeks.

In 2012, the season opener between the New York Giants and Dallas Cowboys was moved up from its traditional Thursday night because NBC wanted to broadcast the Democratic National Convention and Barack Obama’s history-making acceptance speech during his first run for President. Obama and future Vice President and President Joe Biden accepted their nominations that day. Moving it back a day or two would interfere with the NFL’s longstanding rules against competing with high school football on Friday nights and college football on Saturday, and because it was the opener, the teams could prepare physically.

The reason for a Wednesday game in 2020 was related to the COVID-19 pandemic. Originally scheduled for Thursday, November 26th, the game wasn’t played until Wednesday, December 2nd, following multiple delays. The Baltimore Ravens had a COVID outbreak that wasn’t contained to a single position group ultimately hitting 21 players, which pushed the game first to Sunday then to Tuesday. A Tuesday game would have meant the Ravens didn’t have a chance to practice at all, so the NFL ultimately moved the game one more day to give Baltimore a chance to loosen up and avoid muscle strains. The Ravens ended up beating the Pittsburgh Steelers despite only 9 completions from their two backup quarterbacks, subbing for the COVID-isolated Lamar Jackson.

Traditionally, the NBA had led sports programming on television Christmas Day, with multiple games on December 25th dating all the way back to 1947. They saw a dip in ratings going head-to-head with the NFL and that’s likely to continue.

Christmas won’t be on a Tuesday until 2029 and Wednesday again until 2030, so the NFL will have plenty of time to figure out a way to schedule that.
