Any modern business needs social media to successfully reach their audiences and grow. We’ve talked about the importance of Instagram for independent travel agents , but Facebook is the frontrunner when it comes to the best social media platforms for your business. But how do you get started creating a Facebook page for your business? Follow this step-by-step tutorial for getting your independent travel agency’s Facebook Business Page set up:

On your personal Facebook page, go to the top right corner and select the down arrow. Click on “Create Page.”

This will take you to the Facebook’s Create A Page .

There are multiple types of Pages you can create on Facebook, so it’s important to start out by choosing the correct one. For your independent travel agency, you’ll want to select the “Local Business or Place” option.

Once you select that option, a form will appear asking for some basic information about your page, such as your travel agency’s name, the category, address and contact information. For the page category, we recommend putting “Travel Agency” so it’s easy for visitors to your page to see immediately what service you provide.

After filling out all of the basic information about your travel agency, click Get Started, and you’ll be directed to a mostly empty template for your Facebook Business Page.

Start customizing the page by adding a profile picture and cover photo. For the profile photo, it’s important to remember the image will be small. We recommend uploading a square image of your logo (that’s what we do!).

Next, select a cover photo that will capture people’s attention and give them an idea of what you have to offer. The cover photo will be a horizontal rectangle that is 820 pixels by 312 pixels. It’s up to you and your agency’s style what image you select. You could upload a photo from your own travels, a picture of you with some clients, or find a free image on a site such as Pixabay .

After you’ve got your pictures loaded, it’s time to set up the Page Username. The most obvious and easy choice would be your independent travel agency’s name. If that is taken, you can get creative, but remember to keep it relevant to your service and easy to understand. Some options could be “@YourAgency’sNameYourCity” or adding the word “page” at the end.

Now that your page’s empty template is filled in a bit, head on over to the “About” tab in the right menu.

On this page, you can add the more detailed information about your independent travel agency, such as location, contact, hours and a brief description. The description can be found under “About” and is limited to 255 characters. We recommend you write a short introduction with your name and what service you provide. For example, “My name is Jane Smith, and I provide professional travel advice and customized trip planning for clients in the [your city] area.”

Keep in mind that all albums are public unless you previously set your albums to private, or you restrict access to your profile. You can also adjust your privacy settings on a Facebook Page.

  • is brief—40 characters or fewer, if you can swing it
  • gets published at non-peak times
  • follows other posts on a regular schedule
  • timely and newsworthy

Obviously these rules don’t apply to every single post, but are interesting insights into what proves effective on the platform that you can try to stick to with some of your posts. Never stop experimenting though, as your audience may like something different to the average.

Facebook provides the option for you to schedule your posts, which means that after you’ve drawn up your plan for the week you can sit down and spend 10-15 minutes scheduling your posts.

Finding the balance between annoying and informative can be difficult. Whilst you want to share everything going on you don’t want to bombard your Facebook audience with so many updates that they ‘switch off’ to what your brand has to say and at worst unlike your page.

A survey  conducted by Social Bakers has found that posting once a week is ok, but it won’t help build your audience and you run the risk of losing connection with your audience. They recommend that you should post between  5 and 10 times a week . Track social then followed up this research  and concluded  that you should not post more than twice a day.

With 15 minutes to schedule all your posts, and around 45 minutes to decide what you plan to post you should be able to keep a consistently updated Facebook page using up no more than 1 hour per week. And once you get into the swing of things it will become a doddle!

Using the Mobile App

Step 1 Open Facebook.

  • If you aren't already logged into Facebook, enter your email address (or phone number) and password to do so now.

Step 2 Tap the menu ☰.

  • Adding your website is optional but can help increase your visibility, especially if you're making a Page for a business, product, service, or something similar.

Step 9 Add a profile and cover photo.

  • Tap Add profile picture , select the image, and edit it if you'd like. When you're finished, tap Use .
  • Tap Add cover photo , select an image, and tap Done . Then, drag the photo to align it properly within the dimensions necessary for cover images.
  • Tap Save to see a preview of your profile image and cover image together.

Step 10 Tap the blue Done button.

  • Tap the gear icon at the top-right corner to access your Page's settings. This is where you can edit your Page info, set messaging preferences, add your location, and much more.
  • Scroll down your Page a bit to bring up the navigation bar along the top that contains Home , Groups , Events , etc. This is where you can manage different parts of your Page, create events, add more photos, etc.
  • Tap Create a post to create your first post.

Step 1 Go to https://www.facebook.com/pages/create...

  • Click Edit Page Info in the left panel to edit your Page's general information, add contact information, your location, and other details.
  • Click Settings at the bottom of the left panel to manage your Page's visibility, messaging preferences, and other options.

The most powerful Pacific storm of the season started barreling into the Sierra Nevada on Thursday, packing multiple feet of snow and dangerous winds that forecasters say will create blizzard conditions likely to close major highways and trigger power outages into the weekend.

As much as 10 feet (3 meters) of snow is possible in the mountains around Lake Tahoe by the weekend, with 3 to 6 feet (.9 to 1.8 meters) in the communities on the lake's shores and more than a foot (30 centimeters) possible in the valleys on the Sierra's eastern front, including Reno, the National Weather Service said.

Winds are expected to gust in excess of 115 mph (185 kph) over Sierra ridgetops, and 70 mph (113 kph) at lower elevations, it said.

The weather service in Reno said in its updated forecast as evening approached on Thursday it has seen no new scenarios to suggest a weakening of the storm: “Snow amounts have increased, if that is even possible.”

Backcountry avalanche warnings were in place around Lake Tahoe, as well as areas around Yosemite National Park stretching down to Mammoth Lakes.

“Very dangerous avalanche conditions are expected from Friday afternoon through Sunday,” the Eastern Sierra Avalanche Center in Mammoth Lakes said.

The California Highway Patrol imposed travel restrictions on a long stretch of Interstate 80 between Reno and Sacramento, requiring drivers to put chains on their tires. A stretch of the highway was closed for hours at midday Thursday while crews cleared the wreckage of a semi-trailer truck that overturned near Truckee, California.

“Your safe travel window is over in the Sierra,” the weather service in Reno posted on social media. “Best to hunker down where you are.”

The blizzard warning covers a 300-mile (482-kilometer) stretch of the Sierra from north of Lake Tahoe to south of Yosemite National Park effective until 10 a.m. Sunday.

“This will be a legitimate blizzard,” UCLA climate scientist Daniel Swain said during an online briefing Thursday. "Really true blizzard conditions with multiple feet of snow and very strong winds, the potential for power outages and the fact that roads probably aren’t going to be cleared as quickly or as effectively as they normally would be even during a significant winter storm.”

On the bright side, California water officials said the storm should provide a much-needed shot in the arm to the Sierra snowpack, which is vital to the state’s water supplies and sits well below normal so far this season .

Palisades Tahoe ski resort tweeted that the big dump expected over the weekend on top of 8 feet of snow in February should allow them to keep the slopes open through Memorial Day. But it warned blizzard conditions are likely to force temporary closures off and on through the weekend.

Todd Cummings decided to drive from Santa Cruz to the Lake Tahoe area ahead of the storm with plans to lay low during the blizzard and then hit the slopes.

“When a storm comes in, people have a tough time getting there, so there’s sometimes less crowds on the mountains and there is untracked, fresh snow that it’s super light and you float on it. It’s fantastic!” he said.

Some remained skeptical it will be as bad as predicted.

Richard Cunningham said he has heard before about forecasts for the storm of the century that didn’t materialize since he moved from Las Vegas to Reno in 1997.

“Same story, different day,” he said. “Sometimes it doesn’t even snow.”

But that was before blue skies gave way to clouds and gusty winds that blew the roof off a shed east of Reno Thursday afternoon.

The lead scientist at a snow lab atop the Sierra said it is possible they could break their modern-day record of about 3.5 feet (1 meter) of snow in a single day from back in 1989.

“It's a very serious storm for us,” Andrew Schwartz said Wednesday from UC-Berkeley’s Central Sierra Snow Lab , founded in 1946 in Soda Springs, California, northwest of Lake Tahoe.

Howie Nave, a radio DJ and stand-up comedian in South Lake Tahoe, said some people may not have been taking the storm seriously earlier in the week because dire forecasts of potentially heavy storms have not materialized several times this winter.

“There were times when I was expecting a Saint Bernard, but you gave me a Chihuahua,” Nave said about the weather forecasters.

But “everybody's talking about the storm up here,” he said. “This is the first time we've had a blizzard warning.”

California Department of Water resources officials said Thursday that the Sierra Nevada snowpack stood at 80% of average to date but only 70% of the typical April 1 peak.

“The results today show just how critical this upcoming month is going to be in terms of our water supply outlook for the upcoming year,” said hydrometeorologist Angelique Fabbiani-Leon in a briefing at Phillips Station, a snowpack-measuring location south of Lake Tahoe.

When redeeming my Chase Sapphire Preferred credit card points for flights and hotel stays, I used to book everything through the Chase Travel Portal .

Then, I came across a TikTok by travel blogger Nikki On Her Way explaining how Chase credit card points are worth more when you transfer them to airline and hotel partners.

I decided to try it and was shocked by how much more value I could get from my points with just one extra step.

With the Chase Sapphire Preferred card, each point is worth a fixed 1.25 cents on travel booked through the Chase Travel Portal, meaning 100 points equals $1.25.

However, Chase Ultimate Rewards also partners with 14 airline and hotel loyalty programs , where points often have more spending power. To maximize the value of your points, you can transfer them from your Chase account to your accounts with affiliated programs like IHG Rewards Club or United MileagePlus to get more bang for your buck.

I experienced this firsthand while looking into flights to St. Louis to visit family. In the Chase Travel Portal, the Southwest flight I wanted would have cost all 21,887 points I have saved up, plus an additional $16 to cover the remaining difference.

When I browsed Southwest Airlines ' website, I found that the same flight cost just 10,391 points plus an additional $5.60 — a difference of 11,496 points and $10.40.

If I wanted to fly to St. Louis in style in Business Select, I could have done so for 20,791 points and still spent fewer points than the cost of the regular flight in the Chase Travel Portal.

Transferring the points from Chase to spend through Southwest was easy. I selected "Transfer points to partners" from the Chase Travel Portal's menu, connected my Southwest Rapid Rewards account, and typed in the number of points I wanted to transfer. A few minutes later, the points populated in my Southwest account, and I was able to book the flight directly on the airline's website.

I'm certainly not the first person to discover this hack, but I was surprised by how many of my friends had no idea that this option existed when I told them how I'd saved thousands of points.

Now that I know how to transfer points to partners, I'll make a habit of checking both the Chase Travel Portal and loyalty programs to make sure I'm getting the best deal.
