The UAE began issuing five-year multiple-entry visas in 2021, giving tourists more flexibility when visiting the Emirates.

Since March, families visiting the UAE can now apply for the five-year multiple-entry visa as a group.

Before then, each family member needed to apply separately, submitting the same set of documents for each person.

The visa, announced during a Cabinet session in March 2021, encourages longer and more frequent stays in the country for anyone without a residency visa, with multiple entries and stays of up to 180 days.

Now with the latest development there is an option for a family to apply as a group, as confirmed by the Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs and Port Security's website.

“It will help relatives travel back and forth and will also attract a lot more tourists without any connection to the UAE so there will be more footfall,” said Haider Hussain, partner at Fragomen, an immigration services company.

“This will enhance travel into the UAE and make life easier for residents and their extended family members,” he said.

“People can stay for six months at one go if they want to."

The entry permit works as a self-sponsored visa as individuals can apply for it themselves and their families directly online and do not need to apply via a travel agency, hotel or relative in the UAE.

The approval process is quick as long as the required paperwork is submitted.

Here are the details and process explained.

Who is eligible for the five-year tourist visas? What are the criteria?

The five-year multi-entry tourist visa is available to citizens of all countries. To be eligible the visitor must provide the following:

  • A recent colour personal photo with a white background for the sponsored
  • Proof of having a bank balance of $4,000 or its equivalent in foreign currencies for six months
  • A valid health insurance document approved in the UAE
  • A ticket to and from the country plus proof of place of residence (hotel / residence address)
  • Passport valid for at least six months

For each family member included the following is required:

  • Proof of a health insurance policy within the country
  • A ticket to and from the country
  • A passport valid for at least six months

“The six-month bank statement showing that the balance has never gone below $4,000 is key to even be considered,” Mr Hussain said.

“That is the main requirement that needs to be fulfilled, the other requirements are pretty standard. Applications go through scrutiny and extensive review because it is a five-year multiple-entry visa.”

How do you apply?

Applications can be made online via the Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs and Ports Security website.

The service cannot be done at typing centres.

Applicants need to log on to the website, select smart channels and visa service then fill in the data and add the required attachments.

“Generally a week’s timeline is what we are seeing in terms of approval coming through,” Mr Hussain said.

GDRFA Dubai offers a tourist visa service that is valid for five years and allows for multiple trips, provided that the prescribed fees are paid. The visa does not require a sponsor within the country. #gdrfadubai #gdrfadubai_is_ready — GDRFA DUBAI إقامة دبي (@GDRFADUBAI) March 9, 2023

Visitors and residents can log in at https://smartservices.icp.gov.ae/ to apply.

The application process in Dubai can be done by multinational companies for employees who travel frequently for international business.

How much does it cost?

The ICP website lists costs for all emirates except Dubai as follows:

  • Application fee: Dh100
  • Issuance fee: Dh500 per person
  • Electronic services: Dh50
  • Application fee: Dh100 per person
  • Electronic services: Dh50 per transaction

Dubai costs are slight different, and listed on the GDRFA as:

  • 30-day visit visa fee: Dh300
  • 60-day visit visa fee: Dh500
  • 90-day visitor visa fee: Dh700

All charges are plus VAT at 5 per cent.

A deposit of Dh2,060 is required, plus additional fees for health insurance and for applying from within the UAE.

Can I extend my visa when I’m still in the UAE?

The initial visa is issued with a 90-day duration of stay in the UAE in a year from the date of first entry. This can be extended once for an additional 90-day period. The maximum permitted duration of stay under this visa cannot exceed 180 days in a year.

Which authority do I approach to issue the visa?

This is a self-sponsored visa foreign citizens can apply for as long as they meet the eligibility conditions. In Dubai, you can approach a Customer Happiness Centre or an Amer Service Centre.

Companies can also issue this visa for international employees once the company registers with Dubai Tourism via their website.

An authorised typing centre, or a government service centre can help a person apply for it to ensure the eligibility criteria is met and the application is successful.

Individuals and families in other emirates can apply online.

How can companies get a five-year visa for international staff?

Dubai introduced a five-year multi-entry visa for employees of international companies based in the emirate to simplify the application and provide easy access to the city for global visitors.

Companies need to register with Dubai tourism, open a file for the company and then start filing for their employees instead of through a tourist agency. The employees will get the same five-year multi-entry visit visa but it will be via the company. This is open to those companies who have been approved.

What are the other tourist visa options?

For anyone not receiving a visa on arrival, a 30 or 90-day single entry tourist visa can be issued by a UAE-registered tourist agency. Cost is between Dh300 and Dh600.

If a tourist overstays, what is the grace period?

There is no longer a grace period for tourists who overstay their visa and fines will be implemented from the first day after it expires.

What is the fine per day for lapsed tourist visas?

Overstaying the permitted stay in the UAE under a tourist visa attracts a fine of Dh50 each day of overstay.

There is an additional fee for an exit permit that must be paid on departure by visitors who overstay.

This story was first published in November 2021 and has been updated to reflect new visa legislation.

If you are considering a visit to the United Arab Emirates, it is worth noting that the country offers long-term entry permits. Some of these visas even allow for a stay of up to six months. This is particularly useful for those who wish to visit family or friends or explore job and investment opportunities in the region.

To help you navigate your options, we have compiled a list of all the long-term visit visa options available in the UAE.

1. Three-month visit visa for friends and family

For those residing in the UAE who wish to invite friends or family to visit, a 90-day single- or multiple-entry visit visa is available. This three-month visa is specifically designed for visitors who have a friend or relative residing in the UAE.

If your sponsor has a residence visa issued in Abu Dhabi, Sharjah, Ajman, Ras Al Khaimah, Fujairah or Umm Al Quwain, they can apply for an entry permit through the Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs and Port Security (ICP). If the sponsor has a Dubai visa, they can apply for the visa through the General Directorate of Residency and Foreigners Affairs (GDRFA) Dubai.

The visa can be issued for a period of 30, 60, or 90 days, and can be extended for up to three months within the UAE. However, the extension period should not exceed 180 days, according to GDRFA Dubai.

It’s important to note that only the sponsor or an authorized travel agent can extend the visa on their behalf. So, if you’re planning to invite friends or family to the UAE, make sure to follow these guidelines to ensure a smooth and hassle-free visit.

2. Five-year multiple-entry visa

If you are a frequent visitor to the UAE for work or to visit family and friends, you may be interested in the five-year multiple-entry permit, which is the longest visit visa available in the UAE. This visa allows you to stay in the UAE for up to 90 days at a time, with the option to extend your stay for an additional 90 days, as long as your total time spent in the UAE does not exceed 180 days in a year.

To be eligible for this visa, you must meet certain requirements. Firstly, you must have a passport or travel document that is valid for at least six months at the time of application. Additionally, you must have a round-trip travel ticket and valid health insurance in the UAE. Finally, you must provide documentation demonstrating a bank balance of $4,000 (Dh14,689) or equivalent in other currencies over the six months prior to submitting your application.

By obtaining this visa, you can enjoy the convenience of multiple entries into the UAE over a five-year period, making it easier to conduct business or visit loved ones. Don’t miss out on this opportunity to simplify your travel to the UAE.

3. Four-month jobseeker visa in the UAE

If you’re considering a job search in the UAE, you’ll be pleased to know that the government has introduced a new entry permit that makes the process easier than ever before. As of October 2022, jobseekers can apply for a visa without the need for a UAE-based individual or company to sponsor them.

The new visa system offers flexible options, allowing applicants to apply for a period of two, three, or four months. The UAE Cabinet has outlined the eligibility criteria for the visa, which includes:

  • Individuals classified in the first, second, or third skill level as per the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation (MOHRE).
  • Fresh graduates from the top 500 universities in the world.
  • Applicants must hold a bachelor’s degree or its equivalent.

This new visa system is a game-changer for jobseekers looking to explore opportunities in the UAE. With a simplified application process and more flexible options, it’s never been easier to pursue your career goals in this dynamic and exciting country.

4. Four-month UAE investor visa

If you are seeking to invest in the United Arab Emirates or explore potential business ventures, you have the option to apply for a single entry visa that permits you to “Search for investment opportunities” without requiring a sponsor based in the UAE. This visa grants you the ability to remain in the country for a maximum of 120 days, with the added flexibility of selecting a two, three, or four-month visa.

[Editor's Note: This story was originally published in March 2022. It is being promoted again after officials made a clarification regarding this visa.]

The Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs & Port Security (ICP) is now granting multiple-entry tourist visas to family groups.

Previously, one would have to apply for each family member separately, submitting the same set of documents for everyone. But now, the ICP website is providing an option for a family to apply as a group, thus streamlining the process.

A Dubai resident told Khaleej Times that when he flew his family in for a visit, he had to file two separate applications for his parents. However, this is not the case any more, as a travel agent confirmed that applicants can now go through the new process. This means families no longer have to send applications and supporting documents separately if they are visiting as a group.

Valid for five years, this visa — issued to families with children below the age of 18 — allows beneficiaries to stay in the UAE for a continuous period not exceeding 90 days. It may be extended for a period not exceeding 180 days during the year.

A travel agent, who wished to remain anonymous, said the visas had been in high demand, but agencies had no role to play in it.

“It is a service by the ICP and does not require any sponsor in the country,” he said. “However, it is better for them to individually apply for the visa online on the ICP website than go through an agent because travel agencies don’t have a quota or anything of that sort for this kind of visa.”

Indian national Rehna Nazir said she was already in the process of applying for the visa for herself and her family of 5.

“We visit Dubai a couple of times every year to see my sister,” she said. “Having a multiple-entry visa would save us all the trouble of having to apply for a visa every time we want to travel. It would also make impulsive trips possible. Sometimes, my children get unexpected time off from school. If we have this visa, we can plan a trip without worrying about anything else.”

Requirements

To apply for the visa, families must submit the following:

  • A coloured photo
  • A copy of the passport
  • Valid medical insurance
  • Valid ticket to leave the UAE
  • Bank statement for the previous six months with a bank balance of $4,000 (equivalent to approximately Dh14,700) or its equivalent in foreign currencies
  • Proof of place of residence which can be a hotel or residence address

According to the ICP website, the visa costs Dh750, in addition to a security deposit of Dh3,025.

In December last year, the Dubai’s tourism body said it was working with authorities to roll out a five-year multiple-entry tourist visa on a much bigger scale in order to attract more tourists. The visa was introduced as part of sweeping reforms announced last year.

In an interview, Issam Kazim, CEO of the Dubai Corporation for Tourism and Commerce Marketing, had said that the multi-entry visa would help the country in terms of attracting tourists.
