Dreaming of an island getaway right now? What about one that’s surprisingly affordable? Well this list is for you! Here are the 21 cheapest island vacations that you need in your life.

As a beach-lover and someone who’s always making my vacation dollars stretch, I’ve been on some pretty cheap island getaways. But I know I haven’t seen them all , so I recruited some back up.

I asked my favorite travel bloggers to help! Covering regions from all over the world, this list of the cheapest island vacations is going to inspire you to start searching for flights !

Best of the Caribbean – island vacations for cheap

Let’s head to one of my favorite regions of the world first – the Caribbean! Crisp, white sand beaches meet beautiful, warm water. You’ll find a diverse culture in the Caribbean, with delicious food and even more sought-after beaches.

1. Punta Cana, Dominican Republic

Punta Cana is one of the most famous destinations in the Caribbean. While there are definitely a lot of luxury resorts in the area, it’s also possible to travel to Punta Cana for a cheap island vacation.

When traveling on a budget, you have 2 options to organize your vacation in Punta Cana. If you like a beach vacation with food, drinks, entertainment and activities included, you can book one of the cheap all-inclusive resorts Punta Cana has to offer. For as low as $60 USD per person per night, you can get decent accommodations.

In general, the quality in Punta Cana and the Dominican Republic is amazingly good, considering what you get for your money. Even in an affordable all-inclusive resort, you have food, drinks and entertainment included all day long.

If you prefer to travel on your own, you can also book one of the several Airbnbs in Punta Cana or individual accommodations. In Bavaro, rates start from around $15 USD per room per night. This is particularly recommendable if you want to explore all the hidden gems Punta Cana has to offer.

Secluded waterfalls, off-the-beaten-track hikes and pristine beaches are just some of the things you can explore. Public transport in Punta Cana is available for as low as 1 USD per ride.

Punta Cana and the Dominican Republic are safe to visit either way. For whatever way of travel you decide, you’ll have a great island vacation for cheap in Punta Cana!

2. Caye Caulker, Belize

A short boat ride from Belize City sits the tropical island of Caye Caulker. It’s just 5 miles long and a few blocks wide. The aqua blue waters will have you thinking you’ve just stepped onto a Caribbean island. T he prices on the island will make you believe you’ve stepped back into the 1980’s.

From world-class snorkeling and scuba diving to renting a bicycle and traversing the few square miles of this mostly desolate island, Caye Caulker , Belize is the ultimate cheap island getaway in Central America . The food, drinks and accommodation on the island will set you back just a fraction of the cost of a Caribbean getaway. And you’ll see far fewer people, too.

But arguably the coolest trait about this spectacular vacation destination is that the only cars allowed on the island are government vehicles that fix powerlines and other utilities. Otherwise, you won’t hear honking horns and there will be no cars to watch for when crossing the bicycle and golf-cart filled dirt streets.

It’s pretty easy to do Caye Caulker on a budget . It’s easy to save big if you stay in a hostel, take in the plentiful happy hours and go snorkeling for free off the many nearby reefs , including Iguana Reef at the edge of town.

3. Turks & Caicos Islands (one of my favorite cheap island getaways)

If you’re looking for soft white sand with the most turquoise blue water you’ve ever seen, you need to go to Turks and Caicos! The best part of visiting this island chain is that it’s cheaper than you’d think!

You’ll find plenty of things to do in Turks and Caicos , including some of the best beaches in all of the Caribbean!

Here are 4 ways to doing Turks and Caicos for cheap:

• Stay in a vacation rental off the beach. Skip the pricey hotels on this island to save big!
• Book cheap flights using flight alerts like FareDrop . I saved hundreds on flights this way!
• Avoid peak tourism season for better prices. Travelers typically escape to Turks and Caicos over the winter and summer months, so try a trip in the spring or fall instead.
• Hit the grocery store when you first arrive. Packing simple meals for the beach means less money at pricey restaurants.

Turks and Caicos islands are one of my favorite cheapest island vacations I’ve ever done. I’d 100% recommend adding this one to your bucket list!

4. Isla Holbox, Mexico

Mexico is one of the best destinations for budget travelers who are looking for beaches and beautiful weather. However, many people never make it beyond Mexico’s tourist hotspot of Cancun. It’s a shame, because just a few hours away there’s a stunning island waiting to be discovered.

Isla Holbox is the perfect island destination for people who love relaxed and laid-back vibes and cool street art. There are almost no cars at Isla Holbox, so the best way to get around and explore this small island is by bike or golf car.

Some of the best things to do are going on boat tours to visit more islands around Isla Holbox, check out the mangroves and potentially crocodiles, see bioluminescence, go whale shark watching, chill at the beach, and of course sip cocktails at sunset!

Which brings us to one of the best budget-saving tips for Isla Holbox.

Generally speaking, island life is more expensive than living on the mainland, and the same applies to Isla Holbox. However, we’re still talking about relatively cheap Mexican standards here, making it one of the cheapest island vacations there is.

5. Varadero, Cuba

Just 2 hours east of Havana, Cuba, Varadero is the beach you’re likely picturing when you think of a Caribbean. It has perfectly crystal waters and endless white sand . Despite being a favorite for visitors to Cuba and within Cuba alike, it still remains a budget friendly getaway.  

One secret to  travel to Varadero  that makes it budget friendly comes from its expansive length of white sand beach. It’s almost 18 kilometers, most of which is public, and with public entrances every few blocks.

With access to relatively private and serene spots all up and down the beach, you won’t feel like you’re missing out on anything. Especially if you’re not staying in an expensive all-inclusive resort just a few minutes’ walk down the beach.  

Airbnbs and private home rentals in Varadero can be quite inexpensive as well. Some are beachside or just a block or 2 from the water. Just a few blocks off the the main road where many restaurants and bars cluster, you’ll find a variety of inexpensive restaurants. Delicious Cuban food goes for just $4 or $5 for a complete meal.

A favorite budget splurge in Varadero is fresh lobster, which you can find for under $10. You can enjoy beach excursions by catamaran to nearby white sand cays. Also popular are trips to nearby underwater caves with their own swimming holes under the stalactites.

Cheapest island vacations in the USA

It may be hard to believe that an island vacation in the USA can be affordable, but it’s possible! Cheap island vacations are kinda my thing and I’ve been on many USA getaways on a dime. Here are a few of my favorites!

6. Oahu, Hawaii

Most people think Hawaii is a very expensive spot. But there are ways to have a very cheap vacation to the islands. If you visit the main island hub at Oahu, more flights are offered to Honolulu. Many with cheap flight incentives to travel to the island.

Also cheaper hotels, bargain website offerings, staying at vacation rentals and even camping can be cheaper alternatives. Visiting the main attractions can also be affordable if you do them on your own and take public transportation which is easy.

Outdoor adventure activities like snorkeling, swimming and renting a cheap boogie boards are an inexpensive way to enjoy a day at the beach. One of the best, inexpensive ways to see the island is on foot, like these easy Oahu hikes that are perfect for beginners or traveling families.

Eating can also be fairly cheap with food trucks, food courts and take out counters with delicious local food offerings. If you do a lot of picnics with a view, you’ll definitely save from high fine dining prices. And you’ll get the same or better views!

7. Key West (a surprisingly cheap island vacation)

Key West, Florida is a super fun island the furthest south you can drive in the continental USA. The Florida Keys are individual islands connected by over-the-water bridges, making this island chain a unique part of the United States.

Furthest south you’ll find Key West. It’s a common stop for Caribbean cruises and has a reputation as a party city. But with all the history and family-friendly activities, it can be enjoyed by most anyone looking for a cheap island getaway.

Key West can be pricey if you’re not careful, but can also be done for cheap if you get creative!

Flights directly into Key West can be expensive, so the best way to get there is to fly into Miami. From there, and take a Miami to Key West road trip . But don’t hang onto the rental car during your time on the island. Bikes are the preferred way to get around and can be rented for a fraction of the cost.

Also be sure to avoid peak season, which is the winter months. They’re the priciest and the beaches will be full.

When you’re in Key West, make sure to catch a sunset at Mallory Square, take a kayaking tour through the mangroves and dine on a delicious slice of world-famous key lime pie!

8. San Juan, Puerto Rico

San Juan, the capital of Puerto Rico is an absolutely gorgeous city on the northern coast of the Caribbean island. It is also one of the cheapest island destinations in the USA.

The reason it’s so affordable is that most people still haven’t discovered this gem. San Juan is known for its historic old district bubbling with risque bars, old taverns and the birthplace of the Pina Colada.

One of the best things to do in Old San Juan is walk the cool city. You’ll discover the proud castles Castillo San Felipe del Morro and Castillo de San Cristobal that stand on the edge of the cliff.

You’ll find other interesting places like Chocobar Cortes and the famous Calle Fortaleza with the hundred hanging umbrellas. Of course, the gleaming beaches spread across Puerto Rico are equally enticing. (A favorite among beach lovers is the stunning Flamenco Beach, Puerto Rico .)

The bioluminescent bays sparkle like a thousand stars during the night and visitors love to take tours to see them in the bays near San Juan. Lastly the El Yunque rainforest is probably one of the most gorgeous hikes you will ever do.

The best thing about San Juan is that it is a very affordable destination. If you are a budget traveler you’ll find plenty of good clean hostels. The food and transportation are also surprisingly very low compared to the other good beach destinations. San Juan is definitely one place where you can enjoy the best of both worlds .

9. Kauai, Hawaii

Well it might be hard to believe that Hawaii can be on this list of cheapest island vacations. As someone who’s been to Kauai on a budget, it’s 100% possible and also 100% amazing!

The first thing I’d recommend is watching for cheap flights using FareDrop . You could also use credit card or airline rewards points !

For accommodations, skip the pricey hotels. I’ve visited Hawaii many times and can tell you that you’ll likely be spending most of your time outside. So you really don’t need a pricey hotel room.

Lastly, opt for cheap entertainment. While one of my favorite memories on a trip to Hawaii was a helicopter tour over the NaPali coast , it was a splurge. Instead, hit the best beaches in Kauai – which are all free!

And if you’re an avid hiker, then this is your paradise! My favorite easy hike was the Maha’ulepu Heritage Trial (with spectacular ocean views). A more challenging hike was the Waimea Canyon Trail , which opened up to one of the most stunning views of Kauai ever.

Affordable islands in Europe

Let’s head to Europe for the next few islands! A region known for it’s picturesque blue water and and stunning sea-side villages, you’ll surely find a European island vacation for cheap to visit.

10. Ios Island Greece

In the last few years, Ios has become a haven for backpackers thanks to its buzzing nightlife, stunning towns and beaches, and relatively cheap accommodation. Whether you’re there to dance ’til dawn or not, you can certainly find a load of great things to see and do on Ios island on a budget.

Some of the best free things to do in Ios island include wandering around the pretty harbor and main town (Chora). Plan to visit churches and chapels scattered across the island including the Church of Agia Irini. Also check out the site of Homer’s Tomb which can be reached from the town of Plakotos.

Other cheap attractions include the Bronze Age settlement of Skarkos and the Archaeological Museum which has entrance prices of just $4 each.

Travelers can find dorm beds in some of Ios’ best hostels for 15-20 per night. Or, if you’re traveling as a couple on the cheap, you can find a budget hotel room or Airbnb for less than between 25-50 a night.

If you’re really looking to save money on your cheap island vacation, try traveling outside of peak season. And book your accommodation and ferry tickets in advance. Buy your own food and drink to enjoy in the comfort of your apartment for some of your meals.

11. Tenerife, Canary Islands (a beautiful and cheap island vacation)

Tenerife in the Canary Islands is the ideal island destination for a cheap vacation. Tenerife has year-round sunshine and many affordable accommodation options from 2* to 5* most of which offer an all-inclusive package which can be great value for money.

If you don’t stay all-inclusive then options for eating out are extensive. You can find restaurants to suit any taste from traditional Spanish to Italian, Chinese and English cuisine.

Many local restaurants offer a menu del dia which is excellent value for money for 3 courses. It often includes tasty local dishes like tapas and paella, some even include a free glass of wine.

Tenerife has many exciting things to do and it’s not just about visiting the beautiful beaches which have both yellow and black sand. You can find tours for whale watching, jeep tours of Mount Teide, snorkeling with turtles or even scuba diving at one of the many  dive sites on Tenerife .

The best way to explore the island is to rent a car from as little as 7 euro per day . Taxis can get very expensive, so this will also give you chance to explore the island thoroughly. Be sure to drive up through the quaint little villages on the mountain and explore all the beautiful beaches and towns around the coast.

12. Madeira, Portugal

Madeira is a hidden Portuguese gem located in the Atlantic Ocean. The island has a warm climate all year long which makes it the perfect place to visit during the off peak season. The Portuguese archipelago is quite often compared to Hawaii.

It’s a destination for nature lovers with hundreds of hiking trails and walks spread across the island. If you love wild beachy landscapes, you have to go to the Eastern Peninsula of São Lourenço. You can hike there for a few hours and enjoy the incredible cliffs and volcanic landscapes.

Funchal, the capital of the island also offers exciting activities. You can visit the botanic garden, enjoy a panoramic view of the city with the cable car or go sledding with the traditional toboggan ride.

This destination is perfect if you travel on a tight budget as everything is very affordable. You can easily eat for cheap on so many restaurants, with tasty local seafood and the Madeira wine you definitely have to try. And the Portuguese food is delicious!

You can expect to pay about $50 per person per day for a one week trip . And that includes great accommodation, meals and the car rental . This is one of the cheapest island vacations on the list. It’s highly recommended for family holidays, hiker lovers or even for a romantic trip with your love one.

13. Sifnos, Greece (one of the cheapest island vacations in Europe)

One of the best islands to visit in Europe is the small island of Sifnos, Greece . This hidden gem in the Cyclades island group has a laid back beach vibe that you notice as soon as you arrive.

It’s full of soft sand beaches, whitewashed buildings, hiking trails, authentic restaurants and the perfect amount of island nightlife . Sifnos is also famous in Greece for its pottery and hand-crafted souvenirs. You can hunt for the best items at affordable boutiques and shops all over the island. 

Sifnos is easily reached by ferry from Athens or other island routes. The main ferry is in the port of Kamares, which is also an ideal place to stay. There you’ll find Kamares beach surrounded by rocky hills with whitewashed houses.

It’s circled with beach bars and cafes that you can enjoy from a rented beach chair with drink service. Kamares is a short trip to other lovely waterfront destinations like Vathy Beach. It’s more remote and local with nearby tavernas along the gorgeous protected cove.

Faros Beach is one of the most authentic beaches on the island. It’s located adjacent to a small fishing village with a long stretch of sandy coastline. The picturesque village is one of the most serene places on Sifnos island with incredible views.

Sifnos is an affordable alternative to some of the other Greek islands. It’s got some of the best soft sand beaches in Greece and so much to do and see while you’re there. It’s a cheap island vacation in Europe, and one you’ll remember for a lifetime.

Know for it’s luxurious – and dirt cheap – accommodations, Asia is the perfect place to book an island vacations for cheap. Depending on your location, getting there can be expensive. Be sure to check out these budget travel tips for finding cheap flights.

14. Belitung Island, Indonesia

Belitung Island is not a famous beach destination in Southeast Asia like Bali, Lombok, or Phuket, but that doesn’t mean its breathtaking natural landscape is inferior to others. If you’re looking for a cheap island vacation, you should add Belitung Island in Indonesia to your list.

Belitung is one of the many perfect islands you must visit in Indonesia . The island is surrounded by more than 100 islands decorated with perfect soft-white sand, granite rocks, and heavenly scenery that you can’t find anywhere else. It’s a perfect place to laze on the beach.

So after arriving in Belitung, what can you do to utilize your great escape here? If you’re only going for a short visit, here are some of the many tourist attractions to check out in Belitong , as the locals pronounce it.

There’s the most famous little island called  Pulau Lengkuas . You can see the historic lighthouse that was built by the Dutch colonial in 1882. Climb up the 50-meter tall tower, although the highest level you are allowed on is the third floor, you’ll be able to enjoy the most perfect view there.  Pulau Lengkuas  is also a must-visit place if you enjoy snorkeling.

Not all of the tourist attractions in Belitung are beaches. You can also visit Andrea Hirata Museum, the colorful literary museum. It’s a montage to Andrea Hirata, who introduced the island with his best-selling novel, and also  Danau Kaolin , a man-made lake as a result of kaolin mining activity.

15. Koh Chang, Thailand (one of Asia’s best island vacations for cheap)

Nowhere does beaches quite like Thailand, and Koh Chang is one of the best islands to visit in the country. It is often overshadowed by other islands and doesn’t make it into everybody’s Thailand itinerary , but that makes it not too touristy and the beach is unspoiled. It’s the perfect destination for those wanting a relaxing beach break, but also keen for a little bit of adventure!

Lonely Beach is the main backpacker area of the island. It’s still relatively chilled. There’s no full moon beach parties here, but if you are looking for some bars with a bit of atmosphere, it’s a fun place to visit.

Other things to do in Koh Chang include diving, hiking to waterfalls, touring around the island (with a guide or by motorbike!), and taking a Thai cooking class. 

Koh Chang is also one of the best cheap island vacations in Thailand . There’s less tourism here than elsewhere in the country.

From Bangkok, you can take a cheap bus to Trat and then a boat to Koh Chang. I’d also recommend avoiding the peak season (October to February) if you’re looking to stay in Koh Chang on a budget.

16. Boracay, Philippines

Boracay has won the title of the best beach in the world on more than one occasion. It’s probably the best known of the over 7000 islands that make up the Philippines.

A 4-kilometer stretch of white sand down one side of the island makes up White Beach. It’s the tourist hub of the island and the water is incredibly blue! The beach is lined with hotels, stores and restaurants and people selling their wares during the day. At night the sand transforms into pop-up bars with bean bags on the beach looking out over the water while performers busk for the coin that supports them.

From White Beach you can organize a variety of water activities including cruises, glass bottom boats, diving and island tours. Or you can relax under the palm trees on the sand. Make sure you take a walk to the top of White Beach at sunset to catch the exceptional  Boracay sunset !

For visitors from the West, Boracay is an incredibly cheap island getaway. It’s possible to spend less than $2,000 on a couple of weeks including all the flights, accommodation, food and activities.  

During happy hour you can enjoy 2 cocktails for under $5, and have a full body one-hour massage with the waves as a backdrop for under $15. The people are incredibly friendly, but as with any poorer country it is wise to keep valuables secured. Check out the D’Talipapa for fresh seafood straight from the fishermen, and choose your cooking style from the restaurants there.

17. Hiriketiya Beach, Sri Lanka

If you’re looking for soft sand beaches with gentle waves and warm seas all the while not breaking your budget, you’re looking for Sri Lanka. This tiny teardrop-shaped island in South Asia is often overlooked by beach-goers who instead flock to the overcrowded islands of Thailand and Bali.

But when it comes to picking the best beach in Sri Lanka  it comes down to personal preference. The entire southern coast of the country is packed with lovely stretches of sand. If you enjoy a cheap surf spot you might like Hiriketiya Beach.

As one of the cheapest island vacations on this list, the secret to traveling Sri Lanka on a budget is taking advantage of their massive public bus system. Oh, and staying in the cheap guesthouse scattered all over the country. Buses cost as little as $0.25 a ride (they pick you up anywhere along the road). You can score comfortable guesthouses for as little as $6 a night.

As for activities, you don’t need anything except a towel, a book, or maybe a surfboard rental ($3 for an hour). If you’re looking for a more active beach day, you can also rent snorkel gear to spot sea turtles, stingrays, and coral reefs far beneath you.

18. Koh Lipe, Thailand

Koh Lipe is a beautiful island in southern Thailand. With its picturesque beaches and unbelievably turquoise water, you could almost believe that you have actually landed in the Maldives. In contrast to travel destinations such as the Maldives, you can easily visit the island in  Thailand on a budget .

Especially during the rainy season, there are some huts right on the beach for little money. But even during the high season, an overnight stay here costs much less than in many other exotic beach destinations.

Koh Lipe is a relatively quiet island. So if you are looking for nightlife and full-moon parties, Koh Lipe might probably not be the right destination in Thailand for you. On the contrary, Koh Lipe is excellent for everyone who wants to spend a relaxing vacation on paradisiacal beaches. Koh Lipe is also a great fit as a honeymoon destination.

There are great opportunities for snorkeling, swimming, or even diving for those who are a little more active. There are also various tours on offer that you can take part in.

If you don’t want to spend money on tours, it’s worth bringing your own snorkel gear and swimming around the island. You’ll be able to discover a lot of exotic fish in the crystal clear water.

19. Bohol, Philippines (one of the best island vacations for cheap in Southeast Asia)

Bohol is an island located in the Central Visayas region in the Philippines. While there are some better known destinations nearby like Boracay and Cebu, Bohol is equally as stunning while being a bit quieter and cheaper for tourists. 

There’s a long list of activities that are unique to Bohol and are either free or inexpensive. The best known are the: 

• Tarsier Sanctuary (less than $2)
• Chocolate Hills (free)
• Hinagdanan Cave ($1)

Closer to the water there are also island hopping trips, snorkeling, dolphin watching, and some great beaches in every corner of the island.  

The bus network will get you to all of these places. And while this will cost you less than $1 per trip, if the bus is full you may end up on the roof dodging tree branches….. not very safe, but it’s fun! Or you can negotiate with a taxi driver to just take you around for the day. 

There’s a cluster of hotels, beaches and farms hidden away on a tiny adjacent (Panglao) Island just near Bohol airport. I’ve stayed at the Amarela Resort multiple times and while it’s a 4 star hotel Bohol prices are generally cheap and it’s worth treating yourself.

The hotel is quiet and relaxing, and has plenty of outdoor space. It opens up onto a beautiful white beach which is almost deserted most of the tim!. 

Nearby you also have the Bohol Bee Farm which has some amazing food and honey products on sale. Plus a restaurant that overlooks the water looking back towards Amarela that is again very affordable.

20. Gili Trawangan, Indonesia

A tropical vacation is always the need of the hour. We all love whisking away to exotic islands with the bluest blue waters and a laid back yet fun island life. To top it off, a tropical paradise that doesn’t break the bank truly makes up for the perfect island escape.

One such affordable island getaway is jetting off to this place called Gili Trawangan. It sits on the northwest coast of Lombok in Indonesia. While here, your perfect  Gili Trawangan itinerary  must include swimming in clear waters of the Indian Ocean, lying on the beaches with the view of a volcanic mountain in the distance and diving in to swim with turtles .

The island of Tasmania has dozens of gorgeous beaches dotted around its coastline. Plenty are famous, like Boathouse Beach or Wineglass Bay, but when you ask a local where their favourite is for a  Tasmania road trip  then Southport Beach will be right at the top of the list!

It’s a real stunner, with soft, white sand stretching into the distance. Calm, cool waters are perfect for stand-up paddling and swimming. Families love the location because the water is so shallow and sheltered it’s perfect for kids to get their first taste of beach life.

It isn’t all about the beaches either, with beautiful caves located just 15 minutes away, immersive bushwalks through the rainforest, and even gem-fossicking in nearby Lune River.

Southport itself is a sleepy little ‘shack town’ where locals and visitors go to escape the rat race, unwind, and recharge. Forget luxury hotels and expensive high rises… Airbnbs are plentiful, with some so close to the water’s edge you can even go fishing from your front balcony! It’s the perfect way to do an island vacation for cheap!

Or for an even more cost-effective getaway you’ll love setting your tent or campervan up on the lush green grass of the Southport Hotel and Caravan Park. Whichever is your preference, make the most of off-season pricing. Plan your visit for autumn or spring when the weather is still great, but prices aren’t quite as high as at summer’s peak.

Dining options are limited to the Southport Hotel (great Aussie pub fare!) and self-catering – but that’s part of the charm of this quiet beachside town. No stress, no car horns, and plenty of relaxation at your own pace. And if you really need to try something new then you can always drive 20 minutes up the road to Dover where you’ll find plenty more options.

Many people consider summer to be the best time of year to travel. I completely disagree. I absolutely love travelling in the off-season and autumn and winter are slowly becoming my favourites. One thing I love about winter travel is how varied it is. You can be shoeshowing through a forest one moment, take a flight and be lounging on a Caribbean island the following day! Speaking of which, if you’re wondering what the best islands to visit in December are, you’ve come to the right place!

Islands escapes often conjure up images of sun-soaked paradises and colourful cocktails. And while this is mainly the case, I’ve also decided to throw in a few non-tropical islands into this list. If you’re considering heading to an island in December, don’t set your sights on the Caribbean just yet!

The Best Islands to Visit in December

For the perfect mix of sun, sea, and snow (trust me!), I’ve rounded up 19 of the best islands to visit in December. Without further ado, these are my top pics.  

Average Temperature : 17°C (62°F)

Let’s start off with an island that isn’t tropical at all. But is still one of the best island escapes to have over the winter months. Malta is a hidden gem in Europe. It represents everything good about winter sun while remaining a somewhat off-the-beaten-path experience. Especially in December. 

You likely won’t be able to catch a tan in Malta in winter. But, you will be able to explore the island without the summer crowds, go hiking, see some fantastic history, and some stunning natural beauty. 

The island is super easy to get around with public transport. Buses can take you to most areas of the island and, while some can be unreliable (mainly the ones coming from the airport – we learned this the hard way), the majority are reliable, efficient, and affordable. However, if buses aren’t your style, it’s fairly simple to hire a car . If you’re from the UK, you’ll also be pleased to know that they drive on the left side of the road which makes getting around very easy. 

While on the island, a few must-sees including the old town of Rabat with its winding cobbled lanes, the historic Mdina, walk the heritage walking trail, and visit the historic temples. I also highly recommend you take a ferry to Gozo, where you’ll find more fantastic temples, beautiful gardens, and a towering citadel with great views. 

Malta is also pretty good for New Year’s Eve with a great party in Valletta and fireworks.

2. Phuket, Thailand

If you’re dreaming of a tropical island escape during the winter months, you can’t go wrong with Phuket, in Thailand. Located south of the country, you can get here via a 1-and-a-half-hour flight from Bangkok . However, some airlines will also fly here directly. I flew into Phuket International Airport, and from there, a short ride took me to my hotel

It’s a fairly touristy destination , but this all depends on where you stay. The island is big enough to offer a bit of everything.

You’ll find pristine beaches and crystal-clear waters, great for swimming and paddling. Explore the bustling markets in Old Phuket Town, where you’ll find a mix of cultural treasures and quirky street art, and for outdoor lovers, activities like snorkelling in the Similan Islands or hiking to the Big Buddha are a must.  

Then, don’t forget to indulge in the local cuisine; the street food here is incredible and so cheap! You can find delicious pad Thai noodles made in front of you for about £1!

Top Tip: Choose your accommodation wisely to avoid the hustle and bustle if that’s not your thing. Patong Beach is lively with its vibrant nightlife, perfect for party animals, while Kata Beach offers a more laid-back atmosphere. 

3. Tenerife, Spain

For a dose of volcanic beauty and outdoor adventure, heading to Tenerife in December is always a good idea. The Spanish island is an absolute gem. But, in winter, when the summer crowds have left and the prices have dropped, it’s the perfect escape! 

Located in the Canary Islands, just off the northwest coast of Africa, Tenerife boasts the ‘eternal Spring,’ with a warm climate year-round, making it one of the best islands to visit in December.

The island is a paradise for nature lovers with lush green landscapes, towering volcanic peaks, and beautiful beaches. You can explore the unique landscapes of Teide National Park , relax on the golden shores of Playa de las Américas, or take a scenic drive through the Anaga Rural Park. 

When flying in, most international visitors land at Tenerife South Airport (TFS), conveniently connected to major cities worldwide. From there, getting to your destination is a breeze with taxis and buses readily available. You can also get to Tenerife by ferry from some of the other Canary Islands. 

With average temperatures around 18°C in December, Tenerife offers the perfect blend of warmth and adventure during the winter months.

This is another of the islands in Europe that I consider a bit of a hidden gem . Before my trip to Cyrus, so many people told me that there was nothing to do there except lounge on the beaches and catch a sun tan. But, they could not have been more wrong. 

Cyprus is the perfect blend of history, culture, and mild Mediterranean weather. Situated in the eastern Mediterranean, it boasts a rich history and modern charm. December might not be peak beach weather, but with temperatures hovering around 17°C, it’s ideal for exploring without breaking a sweat. 

Wander through the cobbled streets of charming villages like Omodos or immerse yourself in the fascinating history at the Tombs of the Kings in Paphos . There’s also the wonderful ancient Kourion amphitheatre with its stunning views, the tiny Kolossi Castle, and the gorgeous Aphrodite beach where the goddess was reportedly once spotted.

If you’re here for the festive season, the atmosphere in Cyprus during December is electric. The locals really know how to celebrate the holiday season with delicious food, warm hospitality, and a fantastic fireworks display during New Year’s Eve.

5. Gran Canaria, Spain

Another fantastic option in the Canary Islands, Gran Canaria is one of Europe’s best islands to visit in December. This vibrant island is ideal for those seeking winter warmth. 

In December; Gran Canaria’s average temperature is around 21°C, making it an ideal winter destination. It can get a little cooler at night though, so you may want to pack a light jacket. Even so, it’s a great temperature for both beach strolls and mountain hikes .

Like with Tenerife, there’s lots to do here. Explore the golden sands of Playa del Inglés, visit the dramatic dunes of Maspalomas, or wander through the historic Vegueta district in Las Palmas. The Christmas markets are also well worth a visit, where the island’s unique blend of Spanish and African influences comes through.

Top Tip: If you don’t plan on visiting for Christmas, you’ll find that prices are much cheaper. This is one of the most expensive destinations to fly to for the festive season in Europe because so many people want to escape for some winter sun. The start of December is much more affordable.

6. New York City, USA

Average Temperature : 5°C (41°F)

New York? An island? Well, yes, in fact, it is! The island of Manhatten might not be your traditional island escape but I can’t think of a better city to visit during December (except, perhaps, London ). 

Picture the iconic skyline decorated with festive Christmas lights, the city streets dusted with snow, and the famous ice rinks popping up all over the city. New York comes alive in December and it’s definitely one of the best times to visit. 

It’s definitely not warm, with temperatures hovering around 4°C, but if you fancy a festive escape, you can’t go wrong. A few of the must-sees in New York in winter include ice skating at Rockefeller Center, exploring the festive window displays along Fifth Avenue, and watching a Broadway Show at the Radio City Music Hall. 

Top Tip: Don’t miss the dazzling displays at Dyker Heights in Brooklyn for a Christmas lights hidden gem.

7. Saint Lucia

Average Temperature : 28°C (82°F)

If you fancy a trip to what is arguably one of the most beautiful Caribbean islands to visit in December, you can’t go wrong with Saint Lucia. With lush landscapes, turquoise waters, and a tropical escape, this Caribbean gem, located in the eastern part of the region, is a slice of paradise that promises an unforgettable winter getaway. 

It’s fairly easy to reach with a flight to the Hewanorra International Airport (UVF). From the UK, a few airlines fly direct including TUI and British Airways, but most will include a stopover in the States. I’d recommend staying in the charming town of Soufrière for its blend of local culture and stunning views of the iconic Pitons. 

December in Saint Lucia means temperatures hovering around 27°C, creating the perfect climate for exploring. Dive into the vibrant marine life with a snorkeling adventure in Anse Chastanet or embark on a scenic hike up Gros Piton for breathtaking panoramas. Don’t miss the Friday Night Street Party in Gros Islet for an authentic taste of local music, food, and dance.

8. Puerto Rico

Average Temperature : 19°C (66°F)

Tucked away in the heart of the Caribbean, this island paradise is the perfect blend of Spanish influence, tropical beauty, and warm hospitality. From Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport (SJU), a quick ride gets you to the heart of San Juan, where the charm of Old San Juan awaits with its colourful colonial architecture and cobblestone streets. 

December is one of the best times to visit Puerto Rico, with temperatures hovering around 26°C. This is ideal for both exploring the historic forts and relaxing on the beautiful beaches.

You can explore the local culinary scene with a mofongo feast (a Puerto Rican comfort food made from mashed plantains), and don’t miss the bioluminescent bay in Vieques for a magical nighttime kayak adventure. 

Also, I recommend you venture beyond the tourist hotspots to places like Culebra or El Yunque National Forest for a taste of Puerto Rico’s natural wonders.

Average Temperature : 2°C (35°F)

Our first trip to Iceland was in December, and it still remains one of the best places I’ve ever visited. Located in the North Atlantic Ocean and frequently referred to as “the land of Fire and Ice”, Iceland is one of the best places to visit if you love outdoor adventure and natural beauty. 

The landscapes are stunning. 

Surprisingly, you may not get snow in Iceland in December. The country typically sees the most snowfall in January and February . But, you can still expect icy temperatures, unpredictable weather, and rain. Like the UK , Iceland can be pretty rainy!

It doesn’t really sound like I’m selling it, but if you’re looking for one of the best islands to visit in December, Iceland should be high on your bucket list. Some of the country’s top sights include the Golden Circle , the black beaches on the south coast, the famous Blue Lagoon , and the countless breathtaking waterfalls. You can even dive between the tectonic plates if you wish!

I also highly recommend visiting Reykjavik town centre. The city has great nightlife, lots of fantastic restaurants, some of the quirkiest museums in the world (Penis Museum, anyone?), and wonderful architecture.

Top Tip: For a more secluded hot spring experience, venture beyond the popular spots and discover the lesser-known hot springs like Reykjadalur. 

Average Temperature : 7°C (44°F)

I will never stop telling people how great the UK is to travel to . December is one of the coldest months of the year to travel to the UK, but it’s also easily one of the best. With festive markets up and down the country, a whole host of activities, Christmas light trails , and decorations in all the towns and cities, and one of the best New Year’s Eve Fireworks displays in the world, it’s no wonder so many people flock to the UK in winter. Especially London . 

Most international visitors land at London Heathrow Airport (LHR) or Gatwick Airport (LGW). From there, it’s only a short train ride to the centre of London and from there, you can get a train to pretty much anywhere . Trains run to the south, midlands, and even as far as Scotland in the north. 

Nonetheless, most people stay in London for the festivities. And, to be honest, I don’t blame them! Here, you can witness the dazzling lights along Oxford Street, explore the magical Winter Wonderland in Hyde Park, or catch a classic Christmas play in the West End. There are also so many fantastic Christmas decorations in London , from Covent Garden to the South Bank.

If you’d prefer to head to the Scottish capital, Edinburgh is just as festive . Stroll along the Royal Mile, where the Christmas market comes alive with festive treats and handmade crafts and visit the famous Christmas market with its German stalls and Ferris Wheel. 

Top Tip : Don’t miss the quaint Christmas markets in smaller cities like Bath or York . Areas like the Cotswolds and Cambridge are also worth visiting in winter.

11. Bali, Indonesia

Average Temperature : 3°C (37°F)

A captivating tropical paradise in Indonesia, Bali is an unforgettable escape. Nestled in Southeast Asia, it’s one of the best islands to visit in December. You can expect pretty good temperatures in Bali in December, with weather hovering around 30°C (86°F). 

You’ll also find lush landscapes, pristine beaches, and a delightful cultural heritage with historic ruins and temples. Explore the vibrant local markets, and savor the flavors of mouthwatering Indonesian cuisine. Like Thailand, food is pretty affordable here, so you’ll find it a pretty cheap winter travel destination.

On the cultural side, you can embark on a cultural journey to ancient temples like Uluwatu and Tanah Lot. Immerse yourself in the mesmerising rhythm of traditional Balinese dance performances. And, for nature enthusiasts, don’t miss the breathtaking rice terraces in Ubud or the underwater wonders of Amed’s crystal-clear waters.

Whether you’re dreaming of a laid-back Christmas in luxurious resorts or seeking adventure riding the famous waves at Uluwatu Beach, Bali has a range of experiences. 12. Okinawa, Japan

Okinawa, Japan is a tropical paradise known for its rich culture, traditions, and beautiful beaches. Okinawa is one of Japan’s 47 prefectures and is part of the Ryukyu Islands. Closer to Taiwan than Mainland Japan, Okinawa is a popular tourist destination for travellers from Eastern Asia and the United States given the heavy military presence on the island.

Okinawa has a subtropical climate with average winter temperatures between 19 – 22 degrees Celsius. With its comfortable temperatures, Okinawa is a popular winter escape for many.

Although Okinawa is an island, there are many things to do here especially when it comes to nature and water activities. Diving is the number one attraction here and divers flock to Okinawa all year long, even during the winter months. 

Okinawa is said to have some of the best diving spots and healthiest coral in the world. Other than diving other water activities include snorkeling, boating, and parasailing. If water activities are not high on your to-do list, you can shop at Kokusai Dori, visit Shuri Castle, or visit some of the WWII Sites.  

The best way to explore Okinawa is by car and many of the resorts are located in central to northern Okinawa.

13. Jamaica

Average Temperature : 27°C (80°F)

Jamaica is hands down, one of the ultimate destinations to soak up the sun during winter. This island paradise is a go-to spot all year round (except during hurricane season). The prime time to experience this island is from December to April when you’ll find the best weather.

Up in the northern part of Jamaica, is the most touristy part of the island, stretching from Negril and Montego Bay to Ocho Rios and Port Antonio. The beaches are beautiful, and the coastline is a picture-perfect Caribbean island. There’s no shortage of water sports to dive into either!

Once you’ve settled into your beachside retreat, why not kick things off with a refreshing dip in the pool or a laid-back drink at the pool bar? Take a leisurely stroll along the beach to catch the sunset. For an adventure along Jamaica’s scenic coastline, consider hiring a private boat or joining a group cruise.

If you’re in the mood for a different kind of nature-filled thrill, head to Dunn Falls in Ocho Rios. This popular spot, nestled in a natural park, boasts the famous 65-foot Dunn’s River Falls. You can actually climb these and it’s a fantastic experience.

Whether you’re a beach lounger or an adventure seeker, Jamaica’s got the perfect blend of sun, sea, and excitement for your winter getaway.

The island of Aruba is known for its beautiful white sand beaches and family-friendly activities, and it has warm weather all year long. However, it’s definitely one of the best islands to visit in December and a perfect winter travel destination!

Aruba is a little island located in the Caribbean Sea near South America, and it’s relatively easy to get there by flying from the US. There are even nonstop 3-hour flights to Aruba from US cities like Miami and Fort Lauderdale in Florida.

Winter temperatures in Aruba hover around 27°C (80°F) during the daytime, which is perfect for relaxing on the beach and going swimming. Some of the best beaches in Aruba include gems like Arashi Beach and Baby Beach, which have soft white sand and blue water, without being too crowded. For a remote beach with almost no tourists, check out Grapefield Beach on the east side of Aruba.

There are lots of other things to do in Aruba as well. One of the best activities is to go on an ATV tour in the Arikok National Park, which has a rock bridge and a natural tide pool where you can swim in the ocean without having to worry about the waves or currents!

15. Turks and Caicos

One of the best islands to visit in December in North America is the tropical paradise of Turks and Caicos. North of Haiti and southeast of the Bahamas, Turks and Caicos is a chain of British Caribbean islands that contain some of the most beautiful beaches in the world.

Turks and Caicos is known primarily as a getaway for well-off Americans and Brits. It’s undeniably one of the most expensive tropical destinations on the planet, but those who can afford it are greeted with spectacular white sand, clear turquoise water, friendly locals, and wondrous sea life.

20. Koh Phangan, Thailand

Koh Phangan is a beautiful tropical island in the Gulf of Thailand, to the east of the Thai mainland. It neighbours the much larger Koh Samui island.

Throughout the whole winter, you can enjoy balmy weather with December averaging from 25°C to 29°C (77°F to 84.2°F). The rainy season is officially over in November, but you may still experience some rain.

Koh Phangan is not just any ordinary tropical island with pretty beaches. There are just so many different things to do in Koh Phangan . It’s considered a spiritual place for many and the area around Sri Thanu is full of yoga centers and wellness retreats. The whole island is dotted with temples of all kinds.

There are also wonderful hiking opportunities on the island – you can hike to a secluded beach or the top of the highest peak. 

Koh Phangan is amazing for digital nomads, too. There are many lovely cafés ranging from traditional Thai to modern Western. 

And then there’s the monthly Full Moon party, which has made Koh Phangan famous worldwide. In high season, which covers winter, there are often also Half Moon parties held at the Haad Rin area.

You can explore these forests through guided tours in more remote areas, however, many national parks like Bako National Park , Gunung Gading, and Tanjung Datu in Sarawak province are also accessible without taking an expensive tour.

For a first-time visit, the Malaysian province of Sarawak is the most accessible for tourists, with many facilities in the capital of Kuching, easy car rental, and a bus line that goes all the way to Brunei and Sabah. 25. Tahiti, French Polynesia

Laid-back and unpretentious, St. Kitts is an ideal destination for travelers looking for an authentic Caribbean experience as well as beautiful landscapes. St. Kitts’s wealth of public beaches means you don’t have to splurge on a seaside property to access the island’s finest stretches of sand. Head to the island’s southern tip in search of its best white-sand beaches — Cockleshell, Banana Bay, and Major’s Bay. Cockleshell’s calm water, easygoing beach bars, and superb views of nearby Nevis have made it a popular stop for cruise ships, so plan to visit early or later in the afternoon. The adjacent crescent of sand, Banana Bay Beach, has a couple casual spots and sees less crowds. Less than a mile to the west, Major’s Bay sees even fewer crowds, despite offering comparable views of Nevis’ rising conical peak. Furthermore, an abandoned barge resting in the shallows of Major’s Bay creates a unique setting and excellent snorkeling.

Beyond the beach, St. Kitts’s Mount Liamuiga warrants a day trip, especially for adventurous types. Ascending the 3,792-foot dormant volcano rewards hikers with views of the crater and surrounding sea. On the way, hikers traverse steep terrain and thick rainforest, which is home to numerous bird species and mischievous monkeys. It’s advisable to book a guide (typically $75 to $100 per person) to navigate the minimally-marked trails. Brimstone Hill Fortress National Park is a less arduous day trip. The UNESCO World Heritage site sits on St. Kitts’s western coast. Built by enslaved Africans during British colonization, the well-preserved fortress survived numerous French navy attacks from its perch over the Caribbean. The $10 entry fee grants access to the on-site museum and grounds, which includes the Fort George Citadel, barracks facilities, and surrounding ramparts.

Though modest in size, St. Kitts’s mountainous interior means it’s hard to cross the island by road, making for lengthier trips along the coast. Public buses run from Basseterre along the coastal roads north and to the southern ferry terminal near Major’s Bay, but most travelers opt for taxis. Be sure to negotiate the fare beforehand and determine if the price is in U.S. dollars or East Caribbean dollars, as the conversion rate is $1 USD to $2.70 ECD.

While St. Kitts was spared from Hurricane Dorian, it was hit in 2017 by Irma and Maria, totaling $53.2 million in damages between St. Kitts and neighboring Nevis. However, the island’s infrastructure has largely been restored.

Direct flights from New York and Charlotte can be had for around $550 and $750, respectively. Departing from other major U.S. cities typically requires a connection through Miami, which operates daily flights to St. Kitts’s Basseterre airport.

Also, the world-renowned Carnival celebration is set for the week of February 19 through 26 in Port of Spain , Trinidad and Tobago’s capital. The festivities include street parades of masqueraders and traditional characters, a steel-pan band competition, and late-night dancing to soca music. While many of the performers invest significant funds in their costumes, participating is free, though sporting something more festive and flamboyant is encouraged.

Outside the main cities of Port of Spain and San Fernando, visitors will find laid-back fishing villages, a scenic coastline, and densely forested hill country. Trinidad’s northern coast packs some of its most remarkable natural wonders. Maracas Beach’s swaying palms and tranquil bay make for a convenient day trip from Port of Spain. Continuing east promises more solitude, starting at Las Cuevas Beach, which has nearby caves to explore on top of its idyllic setting. Further east, the sleepy village of Grande Riviere sees leatherback, hawksbill, and green turtles arrive each March to lay their eggs on the beach. To view the nesting turtles while supporting conservation and the local economy, book a nighttime excursion for just 100 Trinidad and Tobago dollars (roughly $15 USD) with the Grande Riviere Nature Tour Guide Association. Further inland, Asa Wright Nature Centre and Brasso Seco are excellent bases for hiking, spotting colorful bird species, cocoa cultivation tours, or just learning about the slow pace of life in rural Trinidad.

Winter flights to Trinidad are some of the most affordable from the United States. The five-hour direct flight from New York will only set you back $363. Flights from Chicago and Washington, D.C. will require a layover in Miami, but can be had for under $400 each.

The island’s capital, Willemstad , features Dutch colonial architecture reminiscent of Amsterdam, except with bright hues of yellow, turquoise, and orange in place of the brick facades. Strolling the city’s most historic sections — Punda and Pietermaai — will take visitors to numerous museums, shops, and cafes. The circular Ronde Markt (New Market) is a great spot for cheap eats like ayaka meat tamales or keshi yena (balls of gouda stuffed with meat and other ingredients). Meanwhile, the Museum Kura Hulanda’s $10 entrance fee is well worth it for the in-depth exhibits on the history of slavery in the New World, which include art and a sculpture garden.

For its size, Curacao possesses a diverse topography. To the north, Christoffel National Park includes hiking trails that lead to the summit of Mount Christoffel through the arid landscape of cacti and scrubby trees. Further up the coast, Shete Boka National Park’s series of craggy limestone inlets and caves have been picturesquely weathered away by pounding waves. With over 30 beaches — many of which are public — Curacao’s coastline offers a spot for everyone. For a livelier environment of beach bars and shops, Mambo Beach’s sandy shores will do the trick. Alternatively, Grote Knip’s expansive sand, crystalline water, and offshore reef are perfect for sunbathing and snorkeling. Excursions to nearby shipwrecks and other reefs with dive operators like Ocean Encounters can be had for well under $100.

Direct flights from Newark cost less than $600, but adding a short stopover can get you prices as low as $325. Other cities, like D.C., will require a connection in Miami and come in at around $500 round-trip.

4. Dominica

The island’s tourism industry is still developing, with annual overnight visitors barely exceeding the population of 74,000 in years past. Winter is well outside the hurricane season, so expect daily temperatures in the 80s plus plenty of sunshine. Much of the island’s landscape, flora, and fauna lie within protected areas, such as Morne Trois Pitons National Park. This UNESCO World Heritage site is home to plenty of waterfalls and Boiling Lake, a 200-foot-wide geothermal lake in Dominica’s mountainous interior. Along the way, hikers will pass a diverse array of landscapes, including gushing Titou Gorge and the Valley of Desolation. Though access is free to the public, hiring a local guide for the full-day hike will add insight and help you navigate the trail safely. For a more leisurely outing, the dramatic cascade and refreshing pool at Trafalgar Falls are well worth the $5 entry fee. Another option is Emerald Pool, a swimming hole set deep in the rainforest. Public transportation is limited across the island, so those traveling in pairs or groups can cover more ground by renting a car. Dominica was hit hard by Hurricane Maria in 2017, with roughly 95 percent of buildings and many fruit trees receiving damage. The return of cruise ships in 2018 was another promising sign for recovery. That being said, the people of Dominica have work ahead to rebuild homes and communities. Tourism dollars can certainly contribute to these efforts, especially when shopping and dining at locally run establishments.

Reaching Dominica requires connecting in main Caribbean hubs like Barbados or San Juan, Puerto Rico. Prices from New York average around $800 round-trip, while traveling from Chicago costs around $1,000. To truly see the savings, you’ll need to visit Dominica for at least a week-long vacation.

Since the eruption, St. Pierre has reemerged as a quaint seaside town, with unique sites left by the eruption, including the ruins of an 18th-century theater and shipwrecks in the harbor for scuba diving. For a more cosmopolitan atmosphere, Martinique’s bustling capital, Fort-de-France, is home to historic gems like Fort Saint Louis, a fortress dating back to the 17th century that still functions as a French naval base. A one-hour English-language tour takes in the museum and portions of the grounds for eight euros per person. The nearby Jardin de Balata features thousands of tropical plant varieties. If you’d rather forgo the 13 euro entry fee, venture out of town to Cascade Absalon, a stunning waterfall with a refreshing swimming hole enshrouded by the jungle.

Puerto Rico

Puerto Rico was one of the hardest hit islands, and many parts are still without water or electricity. But that doesn’t mean you should avoid the entire island, and visitors can help by bringing needed supplies. San Juan is slowly getting back to business, and the following hotels are accepting reservations for December: La Concha Resort , Hotel El Convento , Condado Vanderbilt , Best Western Plus Condado Palm Inn & Suites , DoubleTree by Hilton San Juan and Courtyard by Marriott Isla Verde Beach Resort . The Dreamcatcher , (which bills itself as San Juan’s only vegetarian hotel), is open with limited services, but is offering voluntourism programs, like rebuilding local farms and raising funds for Puerto Rico Rising . See Puerto Rico will list resources for voluntourism trips beyond San Juan. Travelers can help clean beaches or assist with water filtration through Local Guest and Waves for Water . Finally, Wyndham Grand Rio Mar Puerto Rico Golf & Beach Resort near El Yunque will be ready for guests this winter, though the exact date is to be determined.

Though St. Barts in the French West Indies took a direct hit (along with Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands, the British Virgin Islands, St. Martin/St. Maarten, Turks and Caicos and Dominica), it’s ready for visitors again. For example, the annual Christmas Village in December will still happen, as will the St. Barts 2018 Music Festival in January. While the famed Eden Rock won’t be ready for prime time until 2018, its villas should be ready by mid-November. Many other hotels, villas and cottages will reopen by Thanksgiving. On track are the four-star Le Village St. Barth , boutique Tom Beach Hotel , the intimate Hotel Les Ondines and the suite-only Villa Lodge 4 Epices . Among the more affordable options set to reopen are Ti Morne and Sunset Hotel . Check Facebook and Twitter for the latest updates.

Canouan Island, St. Vincent and The Grenadines

While those with deep pockets are waiting for St. Barts to fully recover, under-the-radar Canouan Island , one of nine inhabited islands in St. Vincent and The Grenadines, is a ready alternative. It recently added the five-star Pink Sands Club , Mandarin Oriental’s first foray into the Caribbean. (It will be renamed Mandarin Oriental Canouan next year if you happen to book at a later date.) The resort opened last year; since then, the new Glossy Bay Marina, one of the first in the region for superyachts, has joined it.

Besides remaining under-the-radar compared to other Caribbean islands, Dominica also took a direct hit from Hurricane Maria. As it’s still recovering, it won’t be ready to welcome visitors until January at the earliest. As of now, only 32 of 73 properties are estimated to be ready by then, but voluntourism is another great option. Discover Dominica is currently compiling more information on voluntourism programs. Otherwise, the airport is open, and while the island’s largest property, Fort Young Hotel , is still repairing significant damage, it’s already accepting reservations for January. In the meantime, you can donate to help the staff on its fundraising page . Extreme Dominica , an adventure tour company specializing in canyoning and guided hikes, will resume in December. Finally, dive operations are slated to reopen in January. However, divers should be aware that due to reef damage, the daily number of dives will be limited for the time being.

The Bahamas escaped the hurricanes largely unscathed, which is good news for the long-awaited Baha Mar megaresort in Nassau. The first phase of the project, Grand Hyatt Baha Mar , opened this past spring and encompasses 1,800 rooms, a 100,000-square-foot-casino, a destination spa and an 18-hole golf course. The second phase involves the higher-end SLS, opening in November, while the third phase will introduce the Rosewood as the highest-end option in 2018. All told, the finished product will offer more than 40 dining options (airstream food truck, conch shack, celeb chef restaurants, etc.), 30 upscale stores and 11 swimming pools. Speaking of megaresorts, Altantis will add more authentic Bahamian elements, such as the new Sip Sip restaurant set to open in November. For something quieter, French Leave Resort on the island of Eleuthera will add two new villas by year's end.

Although Antigua’s sister island, Barbuda, was 90 percent destroyed, Antigua sustained little damage by comparison. The Trade Winds Hotel , the five-star Carlisle Bay and Curtain Bluff resorts are all open for business. In fact, Curtain Bluff just completed a $13 million renovation and is raising funds to help Barbuda rebuild via the Old Road Fund . Galley Bay Resort and Spa was damaged, but is reopening on Dec. 15, while Sandals Grande Antigua Resort & Spa is reopening on Dec. 17 after previously-scheduled maintenance.

Jamaica is among the islands that weren’t affected, and this year there are 3,000 new or renovated rooms available. This includes a spate of new hotel openings, many in Montego Bay, including the five-star Breathless Montego Bay Resort & Spa , the all-inclusive Royal Decameron Cornwall Beach and the boutique Zoetry Montego Bay . Beachfront Jewel Grande is another Montego Bay newcomer and is offering 50 percent off for its grand opening — possibly putting butler service within reach. There’s also family-friendly Azul Sensatori , group-friendly Hideaway at Royalton Negril , and the nudist-friendly Grand Lido , all in Negril. Of course, smaller properties deserve love too, and the tourism board has made it easier to find them through a new site for inns and hotels . The board has also launched the Jamaica Blue Mountain Culinary Trail , a self-guided tour of the Blue Mountains that lists 15 places to stop for food and attractions, from the Old Tavern Coffee Estate to Holywell Recreational Park.

Anguilla, in the British West Indies, took a double whammy from Hurricanes Irma and Jose, but it’s not completely closed for business. Just keep in mind that electricity is still being restored to parts of the island, and cleanup and repairs will continue through 2018. Though badly damaged, the airport has resumed limited flights. The Anguilla Tourist Board is also working on a voluntourism program and will be posting updates on how to help. As for hotels, Carimar Beach Club will have its grand reopening on Dec. 21. It is accepting reservations sooner, for a discount, with the understanding that services will be limited and repairs will still be underway. Paradise Cove Resort and Fountain Anguilla have also reopened, while the high-end Frangipani Resort is targeting a soft opening in late December and officially reopening in January. Further out, the iconic Belmond Cap Juluca and the Four Seasons Resort & Residences Anguilla will be reopening in 2018. Check their sites for the latest updates.

Not only was St. Lucia not affected, but it’s also offering as much as 65 percent off hotel rooms through the end of the year. (Suite upgrades and resort credits are other options.) Plus, the island recently added two all-inclusives: Royalton Saint Lucia Resort and Serenity at Coconut Bay , each offering additional deals as well. Another all-inclusive, Bel Jou Hotel is set to reopen in November following major renovations. Meanwhile, Sandals Halcyon Beach added honeymoon butler suites, and yes, those qualify for the 65 percent off discount too. In addition to deals, many hotels are donating to the Caribbean Tourism Recovery Fund . For example, Caille Blanc Villa is donating 15 percent of all bookings made through the end of year and matching individual donations with up to $50 in resort credit.

Saving money on accommodation might seem like an impossible task, considering the abundance of luxury hotels throughout the islands. However, a little bit of creativity and an open mind can go a long way here. For example, this beautiful bedroom is available for only $36/night , and you might be able to ask your host about cheap attractions and restaurants.

• Meals: $25-35/day, and take advantage of the generous helpings of seafood at fish fries and the food stalls at the Port Lucaya Marketplace.
• Accommodation: $36-50/night; this unique tiny house is a cheap option at just $50/night .
• Transportation: $5-20/day, if you just stick to one island and use the private minibuses (aka jitneys) or taxis to get around. Ferries and flights to other islands will set your budget back drastically, and renting a car is also expensive in the Bahamas (over $60/day).

3. Puerto Rico, USA : $77/day

This Caribbean island is a paradise that won’t break the bank. Like many destinations in Latin America, it’s a breeze finding ways to save money in Puerto Rico, including avoiding big seaside hotels. You can find hostels and affordable Airbnbs easily in San Juan.

If you want to check out other places on the island, like El Yunque National Forest or tiny islands like Isla Culebra, you can easily catch a bus or ferry for cheap. In fact, the ferry from Ceiba to Isla Culebra is only $2.50. You can also book an excursion to El Yunque for as little as $55 , which includes transportation to and from San Juan.

Puerto Ricans are extremely hospitable and generous. You won’t have to pay big bucks for a filling lunch, and chances are you’ll even have leftovers. For an affordable meal, check out one of the many chinchorros (small food stalls) in San Juan. You can find these on busy streets and markets; meals there typically cost $4-8.

• Meals: $20-30/day, if you stay somewhere with free breakfast and go out for lunch and dinner.
• Accommodation: $18-30/night, with the cheapest hostels offering dorm beds for around $18 per night and some Airbnbs as low as $30/night for a studio .
• Transportation: $15-40/day, if you use public transportation to get around San Juan or to other cities. Renting a car in Puerto Rico may be as cheap as $40/day.

4. Isla Holbox, Mexico : $75/day

Isla Holbox never ceases to enchant me, and I would be lying if I said I was satisfied with visiting just one time. This is one of the many places I’ve gone back to in Mexico because of how beautiful and affordable it is.

Holbox is a small island off the coast of the Yucatán Peninsula, with calm shores and even a bioluminescent lagoon. There are no cars there (except for the occasional maintenance vehicle); locals get around via golf cart or motorcycle.

The island has become more popular in recent years and thus less affordable than it used to be, which is unfortunately normal for a lot of places in Mexico. However, it still remains quite accessible compared to other places like Cancún, Playa del Carmen, and Tulum, which are nearby. In Holbox you can still find inexpensive dorm beds, places to camp, and even some very affordable Airbnbs. The food scene is also relatively cheap, with taco stands and small beach shacks selling ceviche here and there for about $5 a meal. The restaurants and cafés are still more expensive than other places in Mexico, but you can expect to pay $10-15 for lunch or dinner.

The locals are warm and hospitable, always willing to lend a hand if you need directions or a restaurant recommendation for a cheap lunch. Not only that but the country is one of the cheapest destinations in Latin America if you play your cards right.

First, avoid Punta Cana if you want to save money in the DR. Opt for keeping your base in Santo Domingo, or even in a smaller town like Las Terrenas if you want a more authentic experience. Especially in the historic center of Santo Domingo, touristy restaurants might shock you with how expensive they are. Instead, try heading down a side street to find a more local joint for a home-cooked meal. Dominican food is incredibly rich and delicious, so you won’t be disappointed.

Transportation from Santo Domingo to other parts of the island can be really cheap if you don’t mind bopping around like the locals do. You can expect to pay around $10 for a bus ticket from the capital to Punta Cana, for example. These buses are cheap, so don’t expect a five-star experience — prepare for a potentially cramped ride.

The Dominican Republic has gorgeous beaches, thick jungles, and quaint small towns where you’ll get a taste for authentic island life. This one is for the adventurous traveler, for sure.

This one might surprise you. Long thought of a destination only suited for luxury travelers on fancy cruise ships, the Galápagos have earned a reputation for being a bougie place to visit. This certainly isn’t the case, however. This ecological treasure trove can actually be very accessible to travelers on a budget, which is great news if the Galápagos have been on your bucket list for a while.

Although there are plenty of expensive hotels there, there are also a few budget options that are comfortable. If you stay on Isabela, for example, you’ll find some of the cheapest accommodation in the islands, at around $18/night.

There are plenty of pricey excursions and diving opportunities in the Galápagos, but there are also enough activities that are completely free to keep you busy. You can swim in the lava-carved pools of Las Grietas, hang out on Tortuga Bay on Santa Cruz , hike to the Mirador Cerro Tijeretas on San Cristóbal , or bike the Wall of Tears on Isabela .

But just like the Galápagos, this chain of islands in the Pacific Ocean is teeming with wildlife, from migratory birds to seals and even penguins.

You can’t actually stay on the Ballestas because they’re uninhabited, but this is a big plus for many adventurous travelers who want to see unspoiled nature at its best. You can stay in the coastal town of Paracas instead, which has plenty of cheap accommodation. There are tours to the islands for as little as $12, which is an absolute steal!

Although no islands in Europe are technically in the tropics, these have warm weather year round, making them feel in many ways like tropical islands.

Greece is not only one of the best places in the world to island-hop but also one of the most affordable. Poros is one of the more low-key Greek islands, and also one of the cheapest. It has the pristine white buildings with blue domes and abundant bougainvillea flowers that you expect to see here, with a vibrant gastronomical scene that will make you want to eat your way through the whole island.

Poros is only a one-hour ferry ride from Athens, so you won’t need to invest too much in transportation costs like you would if you were going to another island further away from the Athens airport. Plus, accommodations are cheap there; you can rent an entire residential home for $33 a night . To top it all off, a full three-course meal will only cost you about $15.

Compared to places like Santorini , which are more expensive and crowded, Poros gives you the opportunity to enjoy everything that the Greek islands have to offer without breaking the bank.

Here you’ll find domes reminiscent of Middle Eastern mosques next to gothic-style buildings, and nearly every street bursts with color. And the best thing is that visiting Malta is incredibly affordable, especially in comparison with other destinations in Europe.

Here you can grab a tasty ricotta-filled pastizz for $1, take a city bus from one end of Valletta to the other for $2, and stay in a hostel for around $28 a night. During the summertime, prices go up , so plan to visit in the late spring or fall for the best shot at saving money.

10. Tenerife, Canary Islands, Spain

The Canaries are sunny, mountainous, and lush, with a brilliant mix of Spanish, African, and Arab culture that makes it a truly one-of-a-kind destination.

Tenerife is the largest of the Canary Islands of Spain, which are off the coast of West Africa. The island itself is made from a volcano called Mt. Teide, which is the tallest peak in Spain.

Here you’ll find extremely cheap accommodation, with Airbnbs starting at around $15/night, a price that is nearly impossible to find on the Spanish mainland. Tenerife also has free activities galore, like visiting Parque Natural del Teide, which has a shockingly similar geology to that of Mars. You can also visit La Laguna and the Museo de Historia y Antropología for free on Fridays and Saturdays or see giant basalt rock formations at Acantilados de los Gigantes.

With such an eclectic mix of cultures, you can expect the food here to be incredible. Even better, it’s super cheap, with two-course meals costing around $12. Eat, drink, and hang out on the beach to your heart’s content without overspending.

• Transportation: $5/day, if you use the buses (called guaguas ) to get around the island. It will cost around $30/day to rent a car, with prices being lower in the spring and fall.

11. Koh Chang, Thailand : $33/day

The lush green mountain jungles paired with the soft blue water below make it no surprise that Koh Chang is such a special place for so many travelers. Although it’s the second largest island in Thailand, it’s a bit more off the beaten path than other tourist hot spots like Koh Phi Phi and Ko Samui, but has become more popular in recent years.

Thailand is known as one of the cheaper destinations, so it’s no wonder why the country attracts so many backpackers on a shoestring budget. I mean, I once stayed in hostel in Chiang Mai for $3/night, which blew my mind. Koh Chang is no exception and has a great selection of affordable Airbnbs and hostels, like this entire bungalow that you can rent for $26/night.

Attractions are also affordable on the island, and there’s plenty of nature to explore. You can easily get to the Klong Plu waterfall via taxi or motorbike, or visit the Bang Bao floating village for the day. If you’ve been dying to go to Bali but are discouraged by overtourism, go to the Nusa Islands instead. Some people even say that this is what Bali looked like 30 years ago, which is enough of a reason for me. Plus, you can easily get to the islands from Bali’s Sanur via a 30-minute boat ride.

There are three islands here that are all worth visiting: Nusa Lembongan, Ceningan, and Penida. The beaches here are pristine and the interiors of the islands feature thick jungles, mangrove forests, and waterfalls. Accommodations in Indonesia are famously cheap, and the Nusa Islands are no exception. Considering you can have a gorgeous jungle bungalow for just $26/night , you can imagine why so many people never want to leave.

If you are a snorkeling or diving enthusiast, Coron Island might already be on your bucket list for how popular it is. Like many well-known places, Coron Island does get crowded during peak season (January-March). Avoid the higher prices and hoards of tourists simply by avoiding a visit during this time.

You can find dirt-cheap accommodations in Coron Town, often the jumping-off point for island-hopping around Coron Island , as well as exploring other parts of the island itself. It’s also quite affordable to eat here if you balance going to restaurants with trying street food delicacies like adobo and seafood platters.

• Meals: $20-30/day, if you have a light breakfast and do either lunch or dinner at a street food stall.
• Accommodation: $10-30/night, as Dayon Hostel’s dorm beds start around $10 ; Airbnbs are around $30/night, like this two-person room with a bunk bed .
• Transportation: $10-50/day, if you do any kind of island-hopping tours.
• SIM card with data: $1-2/day, if you buy a prepaid SIM for about $2 and load data as you go.

14. Zanzibar, Tanzania

Many travelers only dream of visiting this African island paradise. It’s not only a gorgeous, beachy haven, it’s also incredibly rich in history and culture. Known as “the spice island,” Zanzibar gets its fame as a star producer of spices like nutmeg, vanilla, and so much more.

Zanzibar’s cuisine is bursting with flavor and you’ll be able to try some of the island’s best street food at the Foradhani Gardens night market, where you can get a meal for just a couple dollars.

Zanzibar isn’t one of the cheapest places to visit in Africa, but it’s still very affordable in comparison to other tropical islands. Especially if you stay in Stone Town and avoid the big beach hotels in Nungwi and Kendwa, you’ll find that Zanzibar is very affordable for backpackers even. If you do want to stay near the beach, you won’t have to shell out too much. Beachside bungalows are as low as $22/night on Airbnb, so why not spend a couple days with your feet in the sand?

• Meals: $10-15/day, sticking to street food and beachside seafood shacks for affordable and filling meals.
• Accommodation: $20-30/night, if you opt to stay in Stone Town try this private room in a beautiful house for under $20/night .
• Transportation: $7-12/day, if you use Zanzibus shuttles to get between different cities.
• SIM card with data: $1-2/day, with a Vodacom SIM card plus data.

15. Ilha de Bazaruto, Mozambique

This sandy archipelago off the coast of southern Mozambique is virtually unknown to most travelers unless they’ve been to southeastern Africa.

So, here’s the kicker: You can’t actually stay on Bazaruto, as the population there is only about 4,000 and there are no hotels, hostels, or guesthouses. To visit, you can stay in Vilanculos and take a boat over for around $10 each way. Vilanculos is a sleepy beach town known for its shallow turquoise waters that go on for miles.

Bazaruto has five islands, actually: Bazaruto, Benguerra, Magaruque, Santa Carolina, and Bangue. You’ll find brilliant expanses of white-sand dunes as far as the eye can see, with tons of marine life. • Meals: $10-20/day, if you grab a meal in the local market or at a beachside seafood stand. Restaurants are also reasonable in Vilanculos; you can expect to pay around $7-10 for a nice meal.
• Accommodation: $14-30/night, with modest cabins available for $14/night and an entire house for only $30/night .
• Transportation: $20/day, for transportation to and from Bazaruto.

I tend to find that traveling on the cheap is more adventurous and down-to-earth, even if I’m not super strapped for cash. Often, looking for more rugged accommodation has led me to meeting interesting people and traveling more like a local, which I enjoy. After all, if you really want to get to know a place, as Anthony Bourdain’s advised, “Sleep on floors if you have to. Find out how other people live and eat and cook. Learn from them — wherever you go.”

I did not realize how you can enjoy such incredible islands for a reasonable price. Malta, Poros, and the Canaries are geographically outside of tropical latitudes however to be a “tropical Island” or “tropical island paradise” you just have to be “tropical”-like according to many definitions, so even technically, you are fine to include them in a “tropical island” post. Tropical latitudes are not necessary required! In fact, technically, you can have islands in the tropical latitudes and they are desert islands!! 🙂 Either way, you all have made me realize the beauty of the Greek isles and now am eager to visit there. Either way, I now know that I can afford to go to all of these amazing places. Now I just need to find the time :). Another great article!
