STATE-OF-THE-ART VISITOR CENTER OPENS ON “NATIONAL KENTUCKY BOURBON DAY”
In November 2018, Heaven Hill Distillery proudly unveiled plans to renovate and expand the Bourbon Heritage Center. And now, we’re excited to announce the opening of the Heaven Hill Bourbon Experience (HHBE) in Bardstown, Ky.
The expansion, renovation and renaming are the culmination of a multi-year $125 million investment in Kentucky’s signature industry and model for the future of tourism. The state-of-the-art visitor center received a $19 million upgrade to become an interactive, educational space offering signature exhibits unique to the HHBE. Heaven Hill also invested $106 million across American Whiskey production including new barrel warehousing, bottling line and equipment upgrades, increased holdings of Bourbon Whiskey, and distillery enhancements.
OPENING DAY EVENTS
On the morning of June 14, Heaven Hill President Max Shapira and Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear presided over the ribbon cutting to commemorate the grand opening of the HHBE.
“In the heart of Bourbon country, we welcome fans back to experience America’s Native Spirit, immerse themselves in the long history of Heaven Hill, and learn about the award-winning portfolio of storied brands now told on these walls,” said Heaven Hill President Max Shapira. “We honor the vision held by my father and his four brothers, celebrating the people who built the foundation upon which we stand today. The Heaven Hill Bourbon Experience is an innovative, state-of-the-art tourism model, grounded in history, and developed to entice fans for generations to come.”
Gov. Beshear also presented Shapira and Kentucky Distillers’ Association President Eric Gregory with a proclamation to henceforth name June 14 as “National Kentucky Bourbon Day.”
“I am proud to be in the heart of Bourbon country to proclaim today ‘National Kentucky Bourbon Day’ and I am thrilled to be here to congratulate the Shapira family and the Heaven Hill team on another successful project investing millions in Kentucky and our people,” Gov. Beshear said at the grand opening.
Heaven Hill’s investment in the future of American Whiskey is also focused on the communities that lift up the industry. Bernheim Forest Executive Director Dr. Mark Wourms joined Shapira and Gov. Beshear on stage to celebrate Heaven Hill’s corporate partnership with Bernheim, as well as the commitment to donate $5 per bottle purchased from the “You Do Bourbon” experience to Bernheim Forest for six months, up to $10,000.
THE ROAD TO THE HHBE
Our visitor center first opened on Oct. 15, 2004 as the Bourbon Heritage Center under the guidance of the late Harry Shapira, and helped establish Heaven Hill’s presence as one of the first visitor centers on the Kentucky Bourbon Trail.
With expansion plans announced in 2018, Heaven Hill unveiled the renovation phase of the new experience in November 2019, in partnership with Solid Light and Abel Construction . Now complete, the new HHBE triples the previous footprint with more than 30,000 square feet, capable of welcoming over 900 American Whiskey enthusiasts or newcomers at any given time to witness history brought to life.
WHAT’S NEW AT HHBE
You are welcomed onto the Heaven Hill campus by several rickhouses, filled with up to 52,000 barrels each. The newest rickhouse on site features a bird’s eye view into the resting barrels with a glass window corner spanning the seven floors.
The exterior of the new visitor center showcases a replica of how the distillery looked in 1935, an authentic, vintage barrel truck representative of what the Shapira brothers may have driven in the 1940s and an updated sign celebrating the new name.
Inside the HHBE, the full breadth of whiskey splendor is on display including a new product unique to the experience and select Kentucky retailers; Five Brothers Bourbon is a small batch blending of five ages of Bourbon ranging from five- to nine-years-old. The name pays homage to the courage, dedication and solidarity of the five Shapira brothers who started it all in 1935.
The innovative exhibits at the HHBE offer an in-depth perspective not yet told on the Bourbon Trail. Highlights include:
- The You Do Bourbon immersive space invites you into a classroom style tasting room where a host will guide you through a tasting of unique products. To commemorate your visit, you’ll have the opportunity to bottle your favorite Bourbon or whiskey from the tasting through the custom-designed filling machines, apply the label and personalize it in the adjacent Bottling Room. Finally, you will experience a day in the life of a quality technician by inspecting through microscopes, gauging the proof of whiskey and testing their sense of smell at the nosing station. At any given time, there will be three to four mashbills available to choose from: Heaven Hill Bourbon, Heaven Hill Wheat Whiskey, Heaven Hill Wheated Bourbon and a fourth option on rotation. You will be able to select a commemorative mashbill and label in honor of the grand opening while supplies last.
- The 1935 Distillery Theater invites up to 40 guests to experience an immersive 11-minute show highlighting the story of the Shapira family and Heaven Hill Distillery.
- After walking through the Family Gallery, which details important people behind Heaven Hill’s rise within distilled spirits, you will enter three new self-guided, interactive exhibition spaces dedicated to integral players and movements within American Whiskey:
- The Elijah Craig exhibit immediately immerses you in a charred barrel, the “Father of Bourbon’s” claim to fame. Walls made of charred oak, curved in a barrel shape, enclose a fabricated ring of fire where you can learn how the char on the inside of a barrel affects the aging process and flavor development of a whiskey and understand the nuances of each product in the Elijah Craig family.
- The Larceny space takes you behind lock and key into Treasury Agent John E. Fitzgerald’s room where he kept the registry of his “Fitzgerald” barrels. You are invited to learn how to properly thieve whiskey from a barrel, interact with talking decanters detailing Fitzgerald’s ability to choose only the best barrels, and understand the key differences between Wheated Bourbon, like Larceny, and Rye Bourbon.
- The Bottled-in-Bond exhibit showcases Heaven Hill Distillery’s leading portfolio of bonded products. The Bottled-in-Bond Act of 1897 was an important turning point in the history of Bourbon as exacting standards set forth offered consumers a guarantee of quality and transparency. Today, this designation continues to offer those same guarantees, which you will take a deep dive into through the exhibit.
- The new Five Brothers Bar & Kitchen located on the second floor boasts an upscale bar fully equipped to serve craft cocktails and Bourbon tastings, a lounge area and dining space for the soon-to-be-opened restaurant. You can also take their cocktails to the rooftop area connected to the lounge space to enjoy views of Heaven Hill’s rickhouses.
TAKE A TOUR
You are welcome to join us for a tour and tasting in one of our three iconic tasting rooms. Our initial tour offerings include:
- Magic of the Mashbill, where you can learn about both the fascinating history of Bourbon as well as the story behind Heaven Hill Distillery, family owned and operated since 1935. You will also enjoy five of our nationally acclaimed American Whiskeys, each from a different mashbill, in one of our iconic tasting rooms.
- On the Whiskey Connoisseur Experience, your host will share a short history of Heaven Hill Distillery. You’ll then discuss the unique characteristics of four of our premium or limited release American Whiskeys, focusing on the color, aroma, taste and finish.
- As previously mentioned, You Do Bourbon invites you to learn about mashbills, bottling, labeling and quality control. The one-hour experience costs $40, which does not include the price of the personalized bottle. A donation of $5 per bottle will be made to a rotating charitable cause, with Bernheim Forest receiving the donations for the first six months. The You Do Bourbon tour will be open for reservations at the beginning of July.

About Heaven Hill Distillery
Heaven Hill Distillery has been family owned and operated since 1935, and Heaven Hill Brands is America’s largest independent family-owned & operated distilled spirits company. They produce a wide array of spirits, including some of our favorite whiskeys. Heaven Hill’s brands include: Elijah Craig bourbons and rye, Evan Williams bourbons, Pikesville Rye, Rittenhouse Rye, Old Fitzgerald bourbons, Larceny bourbons, The Parker’s Heritage Collection, William Heavenhill bourbons, Mellow Corn, Bernheim Wheat Whiskey, Henry McKenna bourbons. Other Heaven Hill bourbon brands with more limited distribution include J.T.S. Brown, J.W. Dant, T.W. Samuels & Chicken Cock to name a few.
Distillery Locations and Tours
Unlike many of the other large distilleries, visitors are not able to tour Heaven Hill’s distillery. Their main distillery, the Bernheim Distillery, is located in downtown Louisville and is home to their two 70-foot column stills. Heaven Hill is in the process of building a new large distillery in Bardstown, the Heaven Hill Springs Distillery . This state of the art distillery will allow visitors, and is planned to open late 2024.
A small artisanal distillery, which can be viewed by visitors, is located in the Evan Williams Bourbon Experience , on Whiskey Row in Louisville. (We have full articles about the EWBE and their artisanal distiller, Jodie Filiatreau. You can read them here .) Heaven Hill’s Bardstown campus houses their bottling facility, which also is not open to visitors. However, visitors can enjoy the Heaven Hill Bourbon Experience, which is located next door.
Renovation & Expansion Of The Heaven Hill Bourbon Experience
Renovation and expansion details.
The Heaven Hill Bourbon Experience has recently undergone a major renovation and expansion. The first phase was completed in late 2019 and included new tasting rooms and an expanded gift shop. The second phase competed in mid 2021 included a restaurant and bar, called The Five Brother Bar and Kitchen, as well as expanded educational experiences. The You Do Bourbon Experience , where users have the opportunity to sample 3 or more barrel strength whiskeys, and then have the opportunity to bottle their own whiskey, became fully operational in Fall 2021.
New Facilities and Offerings
The new gift shop offers a wide selection of Heaven Hill paraphernalia and whiskeys, including the occasional limited release, although these generally sell out quickly. The new tasting rooms, the Fitzgerald Tasting Room and The Founders Room, are spacious and offer an upscale atmosphere. The “Library” is also a beautiful new room which features an incredibly long wooden table which can be used for meetings or special events.
Experiences and Tastings At The Heaven Hill Visitor Experience
Experiences center around tastings, education & rickhouses.
As there is no distillery on-site, experiences at the Heaven Hill Bourbon Experience center around education, tastings and the rickhouses. There are four such experiences regularly offered. These are an opportunity to taste some of Heaven Hill’s whiskeys while learning a bit about bourbon and Heaven Hill’s history. Two different tasting options are offered: The Mashbill Tasting (5 samples are offered, each from a different mashbill) and the Whiskey Connoisseur Tasting (5 higher end samples are offered).
The Whiskey Connoisseur Experience
I have taken the Whiskey Connoisseur Experience a number of times. It begins with a presentation on the background of the Heaven Hill Distillery, and then moves on to an in-depth tasting of five whiskeys. Each visit, several of the whiskeys sampled have differed, and each time one or two of their more limited releases have been included. On my last visit, we learned about and sampled Henry McKenna 10 Year Old Single Barrel Bottled-in-Bond Bourbon, Evan Williams Master Blend, Elijah Craig Barrel Proof Bourbon, Elijah Craig Toasted Barrel Bourbon and the Parker’s Heritage Collection Bourbon Finished in Orange Curacao Barrels. It’s a great opportunity to try whiskeys that are often a little more difficult to find.
The Bottled-in-Bond Tour and Tasting
The Bottled-in-Bond Tour and Tasting is a relatively recent addition to the Heaven Hill Bourbon Experience line-up. What sets the Bottled-In-Bond Tour apart from the other experiences offered at the Heaven Hill Bourbon Experience, is that it is both a tour, and tasting, in one. Guests visit two of Heaven Hill’s rickhouses, with each very different from the other. Warehouse Y is an old school oak warehouse built in the 1970’s, and Warehouse H1 is a very open, state of the art rickhouse made of pine, built in 2021. As visitors tour each rickhouse, samples of various Bottled-in-Bond whiskeys are provided and discussed. It is a unique and very enjoyable tour.
You Do Bourbon Experience
The You Do Bourbon Experience offers a great opportunity to taste 2 different barrel strength bourbons, and a barrel strength wheat whiskey. Those whiskey are only available during the YDB experience; they can not be sampled or purchased at any other time. You then can bottle your favorite and take it home. There is currently a fourth tasting option, a malt whiskey. The fourth option however is dependent upon availability, and when available, it generally changes a few times during the year. Follow this link to read our full Heaven Hill You Do Bourbon Experience review .
More Things To Do At The Heaven Hill Bourbon Experience
The Heaven Hill Bourbon Experience also houses a museum of Heaven Hill family and brand history. Admission to the museum is included with the purchase of tickets to any tour or tasting. Guests can begin in the 1935 Distillery Theater where they will watch an 11 minute video highlighting the story of the Shapira family and Heaven Hill Distillery. They can then visit the galleries, which include the Heaven Hill Family Gallery, The Elijah Craig Gallery and the Larceny Gallery. There are also addition displays highlighting other areas of the Heaven Hill brand. The museum really provides a very nice self-paced in-depth dive into everything Heaven Hill.
Five Brothers Bar
Last, but not least, is Five Brothers Bar. Calling it just a bar is a bit of an understatement, because it occupies a large upstairs area of the Heaven Hill Bourbon Experience Visitor Center. While it has a beautiful bar featuring craft cocktails and Heaven Hill Distillery’s spirits, there is also a large seating area, an outdoor deck and an expansive separate event place. Plans are in place to serve food in the future, and that will be a much welcome addition to an already great venue.
Barrel Storage and Rickhouses
Heaven Hill Distillery is always expanding and improving, and that includes their barrel storage. As of December 2023, they have around 70 rickhouses (where they store their barrels) spread across multiple campuses. Some of their newest rickhouses are on their Cox’s Creek and nearby Hibbs Lane campuses, and they’ve also been replacing some of the older rickhouses on their Bardstown campus.
Warehouse H1
One of their newer rickhouses is Warehouse H1, which visitors can tour during the Bottled-in-Bond Tour. It’s located right across from the Visitor Center and has a capacity of 52,000 barrels. It’s an incredible showpiece, with a beautiful large entry area that has floor-to-almost-ceiling windows on one corner. This is where barrel picks and special events happen.
Warehouse H1 also has some other cool features, like wide center and side aisles that make it easier to get to the barrels. The ricks (racks that hold the barrels) hold three rows of 25 barrels each, and the rickhouse itself is 7 stories tall! I made a short video of Heaven Hill Distillery’s Warehouse H1 when it was first built. You can check it out to take a peek inside.
One thing to note, however, is that due to legal constraints, guests are limited to just one tasting experience per day. However, that leaves plenty of time to visit the museum’s galleries, as well as to sample craft cocktails and spirits in Five Brothers Bar. There’s quite a bit to do at The Heaven Hill Bourbon Experience, and it is always on my agenda when visiting Bardstown!

Our tour was very cool and informative. There was a lot of information and then the tasting was great. We thoroughly enjoyed our time here.

While on our 2022 bourbon tour, Heaven Hill was a must stop for our group of four - and we couldn't have been more disappointed. After calling two times with no answer to let them know we were running just a bit late for our prepaid, scheduled tour, we arrived to a next-to-empty welcome center. Why not answer the phone? At any rate, the employee who checked us in couldn't have been less thrilled to see us or happy to be at her job. She did not offer to have us catch up with the tour, but instead had us wait 30 minutes in their over priced gift shop for the tasting at the end. We all have bad days, but misery at a distillery? I didn't think it was possible. Once the tour group arrived, the guide was admittedly very nice and was dumbfounded as to why her colleague had us wait rather than catch up with the tour. Then the tasting. Nothing special here, friends. Bourbon that you can walk into any liquor store and buy off the shelf - and if you're lucky, grab a free tasting for. Maybe we missed a great drop that morning? Maybe it was an off day? I don't know. I won't be going there again to find out. Save yourself the drive and check out one of the other dozens of great distilleries that are happy to have you on the Bourbon trail.
our second favorite tour behind Buffalo Trace. Our tour guide Jason was great. We took advantage of an opportunity for a large group tasting and it didn't disappoint. If you enjoy bourbon I think their tasting is the most comprehensive.
Did a barrel pick here the staff was not that great. very boring experience. Really need to pick up there game. .

Fantastic experience at Heaven Hill. A must visit while in Kentucky! I would suggest getting there early as there was a long line to enter.
Can't go wrong at a place called Heaven Hill. Friendly, big, very corporate feeling, but also pretty, lots to choose from once inside. Didn't take the tour but bought a few different bottles and souvenirs. You have to come here to get your passport stamped not far off the highway. Easy to get to.
Kevin was our "bourbon guide" and was absolutely fantastic. He had a great banter and shared all the history of the Evan Williams bourbon. We had a group of four and each of us really enjoyed our time. When I'm Louisville again, we would absolutely come back. Also, shout out to Tommy in the gift shop who was great as well!
This is a duplicate listing with the incorrect address of the Evan Williams Bourbon Experience. The correct listing for Heaven Hill Distilleries is at http://www.yelp.com/biz/heaven-hill-distilleries-bardstown. The correct address for Heaven Hill Distilleries is... 1311 Gilkey Run Road Bardstown, KY 40004 Yelp never seems to miss an opportunity to publish incorrect information. Google is counting on this to wipe your app off the map.
We had a great time at this distillery - we managed to get ourselves into a little tasting (Elijah Craig 23... yum!) Joan helped us that day... and even my non-drinking sister had a little bourbon with a splash of water and didnt choke to death.... Joan rocker her world (okay... really Joan impressed ME because she got my sister to try bourbon!). We waltzed out of there with a handful of items (even my sister got the spicy apple BBQ sauce) - A fruitful trip to a great little gift shop!
Very friendly environment and informative tour. They have a very nice gift shop area and tasting room. The gift shop is under construction but still very nice. Really enjoyed the tasting. Once of the more informative ones we had.

GSN Review: Heaven Hill Heritage Collection 18-Year-Old Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey
Heaven Hill has pulled from their special stock of barrels twice before. First in 2018 for the premium, extra-aged Heaven Hill 27-year-old Kentucky Straight Bourbon, and again in 2020 for a special 85th Anniversary bottling. The success of these two releases inspired them to create the Heaven Hill Heritage Collection. With this exclusive collection, they are now able to share their oldest Whiskeys each year.
GSN’s Remarks: Richly appointed and venerable nose of deep oak and char. One whiff and you can tell that there will be nearly two decades of history here. The package is tightly compacted with intense flavor and the 60% ABV keeps things well bound together. Sometimes sweetness that often dissipaits in elder whiskies, but not so in this release. The bourbon is cheerfully chewy and full of toffee-like character. A light peppery top note adds to the 360 degree mouthfeel. The body is medium-heavy, while the finish is extra long. A remarkable whiskey that is world class. GSN Rating: A+++
