THE VOYAGERS RETURN TO ACTION FOR HOME OPENING WEEKEND AT LAKESHORE MUSKEGON’S NEW PRO TEAM MARKS HOME DEBUT SATURDAY NIGHT & SUNDAY AFTERNOON

It’s the home opening weekend coming up for Muskegon’s new pro hockey team. Under the direction of Team Owner and Head Coach Cody Mulready, the Muskegon Voyagers will swing back into MIHL (Michigan Independent Hockey League) league action with a pair of appearances at their hockey home of the Lakeshore Sports Center, Muskegon.

The Voyagers will be formally unveiled as Muskegon’s new pro hockey team this Saturday night, February 27 th at 7:00 pm when they broach a two-games homestand series against The Prospects Team. The two teams will tangle in a Sunday matinee encore encounter in a 12:00 noon opening face-off.

Plenty of excellent, choice seats are available for both of the Voyagers home performances this upcoming weekend.

Inaugurating this abbreviated, abridged season the past weekend, the Voyagers divided a two-games’ series at Gaylord as they tackled their principal early-season rivals, the Gaylord Snow. In game one on Saturday night, Muskegon celebrated its first victory in its first ever game as a bona fide professional hockey franchise, extracting a hard-earned, dramatic comeback 4-3 overtime success. Former Reeths-Puffer scoring standout Jeremy Joyce delivered the ultimate GWG, striking early in the five minutes extra session at the 1:26 mark. The victors actually surmounted previous deficits of 1-0 and 2-1 to achieve their opening night triumph. Chris Corgan, Jason Wrbelis and Skylar Vining also made connection while defenseman Joe DeFay assisted twice. Calvin College alum Trevor Boardway was supreme in goal for the Muskegonites, rebuffing 48 of 51-shots as the home-standing Snow outshot the visitors, 51-44. Two of Gaylord’s three strikes were stoked on the power play, going 2-8 with the extra man band while the Voyagers manpower was totally negated, going 0-8. Joyce earned the game’s #1 Star through his OT histrionics; Boardway was acclaimed #2 Star.

In Sunday’s rematch, the Voyagers gained 2-1 and 3-2 advantages before being trimmed, 5-4. A Gaylord three-goals second period resurgence, featuring GTG from its special teams (1-PPG / 1-SHG) represented the climactic juncture of the contest. Wrbelis, the Aquinas College star, spurred Muskegon’s second consecutive four-goals offensive output, engineering 3-points on 1-goal and 2-assists. Corgan, like Wrbelis, notched his second in as many games while Luke McCarthy and Corbin (CJ) Emery caged singletons. Once again, the Gaylord special teams were superior to Muskegon’s as the Snow brewed 1-PPG (1-2) in addition to that key, touch-in-the-clutch SHG. For the weekend series, Gaylord’s power play was 3-10, going 3 for the last 5. The Voyagers man advantage squadron was a desolate at 0-9.

NASA engineers discover why Voyager 1 is sending a stream of gibberish from outside our solar system

Voyager 1 has been sending a stream of garbled nonsense since November. Now NASA engineers have identified the fault and found a potential workaround.

An artist's illustration of Voyager 1 with its antenna pointed back at Earth.

For the past five months, the Voyager 1 spacecraft has been sending a steady stream of unreadable gibberish back to Earth. Now, NASA engineers finally know why.

The 46-year-old spacecraft sends regular radio signals as it drifts further from our solar system . But in November 2023, the signals suddenly became garbled, meaning  scientists were unable to read any of its data, and they were left mystified about the fault's origins.

In March, NASA engineers sent a command prompt, or "poke," to the craft to get a readout from its flight data subsystem (FDS) — which packages Voyager 1's science and engineering data before beaming it back to Earth.

After decoding the spacecraft's response, the engineers have found the source of the problem: The FDS's memory has been corrupted.

Related: NASA's Voyager 1 sends readable message to Earth after 4 nail-biting months of gibberish

"The team suspects that a single chip responsible for storing part of the affected portion of the FDS memory isn't working," NASA said in a blog post Wednesday (March 13) . "Engineers can't determine with certainty what caused the issue. Two possibilities are that the chip could have been hit by an energetic particle from space or that it simply may have worn out after 46 years."

— Historic space photo of the week: Voyager 2 spies a storm on Saturn 42 years ago

— NASA reestablishes full contact with Voyager 2 probe after nail-biting 2-week blackout

Although it may take several months, the engineers say they can find a workaround to run the FDS without the fried chip — restoring the spacecraft's messaging output and enabling it to continue to send readable information from outside our solar system.

Launched in 1977, Voyager 1 zipped past Saturn and Jupiter in 1979 and 1980 before flying out into interstellar space in 2012. It is now recording the conditions outside of the sun's protective magnetic field , or heliosphere, which blankets our solar system.

Voyager 1 is currently more than 15 billion miles (24 billion kilometers) from Earth, and it takes 22.5 hours for any radio signal to travel from the craft to our planet.

sourloaf said: What does FSB mean?
Rusty Lugnuts said: Where are you seeing "FSB"? The closest thing I can see in the article is "FDS". In modern computers, FSB would most likely refer to the Fr0nt S1ide Bu5, though I have no idea if a system as old as Voyagers, let alone engineered so specifically, would have an FSB. (apparently I can't spell out "Fr0nt S1ide Bu5" or my post gets flagged as spam or inappropriate??)
