Many later documented that they witnessed awesome sights they could not explain using conventional logic or science. The sun appeared to spin in the sky and then drop toward the ground in a blaze of color.

This mixed group from myriad backgrounds had gathered in that place because Our Lady of Fatima visited 3 young children — Lucia, Francisco, and Jacinta — on multiple occasions and provided them with a prophesy that a miracle would occur on this exact date. These 3 children also received 3 further prophesies, referred to as the Three Secrets.

The prophesied events mentioned in the Three Secrets later came to pass. In response, Pope Francis canonised Francisco and Jacinta in 2017 who are now recognized as saints by the Roman Catholic Church. Lucia has yet to receive such recognition. She lived until 2005 and so was still alive when her contemporaries began their path toward sainthood. It is likely she will join their ranks in due course.

Airports & Entry

You can enter Portugal by ferry, road, railway, or air. Except for air, all the methods of travel involve traveling through or from Spain. By far the easiest and quickest way to travel to Portugal is by airplane.

Most visitors fly to Porto Airport in the north, Lisbon Airport in the middle, or Faro Airport in the south. To compare, in 2017 Porto saw 10.8 million passengers, Faro 8.7 million, and Lisbon 26.7 million, making the capital by far the most popular entry point into Portugal.

If you are interested in beautiful scenery and wildlife, you’ll likely want to be in the north. For history and culture, Lisbon. And for “Mediterranean” beach vacations, Faro.

Lisbon International Airport (LIS, or Humberto Delgado Airport) is located inside the city and only 4.3 miles northeast of the historic center. Before the pandemic, the airport saw annual increases in passenger traffic, handling 31.2 million visitors in 2019. Because it is a travel hub for Ryanair, TAP Air Portugal, and TAP Express, it is the 20 th busiest European airport.

The airport’s 2 terminal buildings are dated and busy, but they do contain all the amenities you would expect from a major international airport. All arrivals and most international departures are handled by Terminal 1.

Note that passport control on departure is after the duty-free shops, and the queues for immigration control can be long. So, don’t get so excited in the stores hunting out last minute bargains that you miss your flight.

Just because you arrived in Terminal 1, it does not mean that you will depart from there. To avoid unnecessary complications on departure, check your ticket carefully and ensure you know which terminal you are flying from before heading for the airport.

By far the easiest way to transfer from the airport to any location around Lisbon is on the metro. The metro is affordable, safe, and efficient, with stations all around the city. To use the metro, you will need to purchase a reusable Viva Viagem card for €0.5 and then pay a €1.50 fare for your journey around Lisbon.

If you are in more of a hurry, or you have children to watch and luggage to carry, consider taking a taxi. The typical taxi fare for a 4-seat taxi to the historic center is between €10 and €15 during the day. In a larger vehicle or at night, fares increase by 20%.

Alternatively, you can hire a car at the airport. All the major international car rental companies are represented in the Terminal 1 arrivals hall. But be warned that the car rental car park exits immediately into a busy urban area, and accidents do happen.

Watch out for alheiras on menus across Portugal. These traditional sausages were originally made by members of secret Jewish communities using only kosher meats. Instead of pork fat, bread was used as a main ingredient. These bready sausages can be served grilled or baked and with a fried egg and a side of rice.

In bygone days, not everyone could afford large quantities of meat. Hence a cabbage and potato-based soup called caldo verde is popular in rural communities. However, vegetarians should beware. These soups are flavored using a small amount of chorizo spicy sausage. It is rare to find caldo verde without at least a little spicy sausage flavoring.

If you have a sweet tooth, you’ll be happy to hear that sweet and flaky pastries are important in Portuguese cuisine. Popular varieties include bolos de São Gonçalo and pastel de Nata , both involve generous amounts of custard as a filling or topping.

Nightlife & Entertainment

In northern and central Portugal, the nightlight is focused around the main cities of Porto and Lisbon. However, in the south, the Algarve region is noted for its lively nightclub scene, live music venues, and popular beach bars.

As with any city with a large student population, Porto is a wonderful destination for nightclubbing and music venues year-round. Portugal’s second largest city is also host to some wonderful cultural festivals that amaze visitors.

The university students traditionally celebrate the end of their exams in style during the first half of May. During this time, expect to find 50,000 students flooding the bars and nightclubs in search of fun. And in the Queimódromo square adjacent to City Park, you can attend live concerts every evening.

During the midsummer solstice, the São João Festival involves some quirky local traditions, such as displaying a vase decorated with a poem and eating sardines and potatoes alongside locally produced red wine.

As the cultural capital of the nation, you’ll find a broader range of options in Lisbon. It is twice the size of Porto and houses a more diverse, international population. The nightclubs are less aimed at students and more toward younger tourists.

You’ll find that the nightlife starts late but goes on until after dawn. The narrow labyrinth of streets in the Old Town contains many popular bars that fill with the younger crowd nightly, especially around the Avenida da Liberdade and Rossio .

The Bairro Alto is the heart of the Lisbon night scene. You’ll find traditional Portuguese folk music played in tiny tavernas neighboring live rock and jazz music venues. The bars don’t close until 2 am and the clubs remain open until around 7 am. The night spots in this area are always crowded and typically reach capacity soon after 11 pm.

The Algarve

In the Algarve, the city of Albufeira is renowned for its nightlife. In fact, although it is a small city when compared with Porto or Lisbon, it is reputed to contain the best nightclubs and bars in Portugal.

Young tourists from around Europe and the rest of the world flock to Albufeira to spend their days playing on the beaches and nights playing in the clubs. During the summer months, The Strip is a prime destination for hen and stag parties and students looking to get drunk and maybe get lucky, too.

The big name clubs that attract the famous DJs and crowds are Kadoc outside of town, Kiss on Rua Vasco da Gama, and Club Heaven, Club Vida, and Liberto’s Lounge Club on The Strip.

If you seek something quieter and more sophisticated, head for the pedestrianized old town center where the restaurants and cocktail bars cater for an older crowd with more refined tastes.

Getting Around

The strange thing about Portugal when compared to many other countries is that it’s often quicker to travel by bus than by train. My wife recently needed to travel from Lisbon to Porto, which is 195 miles. The time quoted for both long-distance coach and high-speed train was 3 hours 15 minutes, but the coach cost €5.00 and the train €23.31.

Hiring a car is a great option if you want to visit those remote fortified hilltop towns or vineyards around Porto. However, you must be a confident driver. The number of car accidents in Portugal is higher than average in Europe, though, to be fair, there are fewer road fatalities in Portugal than in the US . Note that driving while intoxicated is a problem in the evenings, so take special care if driving after dark.

Despite their lack of speed, Portuguese trains are modern. Some rail services pass through scenic areas and provide excellent views, such as the service from Porto to Pochinho. However, you should be aware that train stations are often a long distance from the town center or village they serve.

The services are divided into Intercidades (IC), Interregionais (IR), Regionais (R), and Urbanos. IC services are the fastest linking Lisbon to the major cities, but they are also more expensive. Urbanos services are aimed at commuters around Lisbon and Porto, which also both have underground metro systems.

Tickets are purchased from the station on the day of travel, but be aware that long queues form so you must arrive early to ensure you don’t miss your train. The tickets are affordable compared with other nations and you can choose between primeira classe (first class) and conforto (economy).

The bus services across Portugal reach more places than the railway, deliver you to the center of the towns, are cheaper than the train, and often faster. If you want to travel from one large city to another, you need a Rede Expressos coach.

Unlike with the trains, it’s a good idea to book bus tickets online in advance. You can also buy them at ticket desks in cafés near the bus stop or at central bus stations. You can get travel information from bus stations. However, note that many assistants outside of the Algarve speak poor English or none.

Portugal has surprisingly good main roads that have been improved and extended in recent years. That’s why the buses are as quick as the trains. These major routes are called Estrada Nacional (EN or N).

However, when visiting remote rural areas, you can expect poorly maintained and narrow roads. And you may need to share them with loose animals, so drive carefully.

There is a freeway network between major cities — Auto-Estrada (A). These are 4 or 6 lane roads, but they have toll gates, and you must pay to use them. DO NOT use the lane labelled Via Verde because this is for prearranged automatic payment.

Unlike most countries, the Portuguese police will accept foreign driving licenses, so you won’t require an international license to drive here. The Portuguese police are empowered to enforce on-the-spot fines for poor parking, speeding, and other misdemeanors.

Parking at cities is at a premium, so you may struggle to park near popular attractions. Consider using park-and-ride schemes where they are available.

Within cities, the taxis are relatively affordable. This is a good thing since railway stations are often a long way from the town center, so you may need a taxi.

Accommodations

If you plan to explore the Portuguese countryside, you’re in luck. Outside of Porto, Lisbon, and the Algarve, accommodation is very affordable. In towns and villages, you can find twin rooms in small hotels and guesthouses for around €40 per night. And if money is no object, there are many upscale hotels, historic manor houses, and even castles, such as the Pousada Castelo de Óbidos just 53 miles north of Lisbon.

Pousadas, such as the one in the castle above, are a class of comfortable hotels typically either located in beautiful historic buildings or situated in an area of outstanding natural beauty. No matter where you want to stay in Portugal, locating affordable and comfortable accommodation is not a problem.

However, if you plan to stay in Porto, Lisbon, or the Algarve, you need to plan ahead. All the best and most affordable accommodations in these areas are typically booked up days, if not weeks in advance. Reservations are essential to ensure you don’t end up staying in a crumbling dump and paying through the nose.

For travelers on a budget, Portugal has a great range of youth hostels and campgrounds to choose from. RVers are especially welcome. There are also many one-star hotels that offer the minimum of facilities but at a low, low price. Be aware that youth hostels and one-star hotels may not have air conditioning, which may become a problem in high summer.

Self-catering villas are an option for larger groups of family and friends. When the bill is shared between many, a large villa can prove more comfortable than a hotel but for a lower price. Note that for villas and hotels alike, it is a good idea to book ahead in high season to avoid disappointment.

Portugal’s weather is dependent upon two factors — its latitude and its position at the south-westernmost point of Europe sticking out into the Atlantic Ocean. The ocean moderates Portugal’s temperatures, resulting in relatively mild winters and warm summers.

There is a significant variance between the north and the south of the nation. Around Porto in the north, the annual average temperature is 55 0 F. In the Algarve in the far south, this rises to 64 0 F. While the mountains in northern Portugal do see snow, with a ski resort at Serra da Estrela, the rest of the country misses out completely.

The mild winters provide average temperatures of 49 0 F in Porto, 52.5 0 F in Lisbon, and 53.5 0 F in the Algarve. There are spells of poor weather with high winds and heavy rainfall. Occasionally, the winds grow to gale force. But overall, the weather is mild from December to February.

The warm summers are sunny with average temperatures of 70 0 F in Porto and 74.5 0 F in Lisbon and the Algarve. Some coastal areas in the west experience relatively cool weather because of the ocean breezes. Due to its more sheltered location, the Algarve avoids those breezes and maintains high summer temperatures.

Attractions

Though Portugal is a small country, it is packed with many wonderful natural and historic attractions. These are separated into three distinctive regions: the north, the central region, and the Algarve in the far south.

The most famous natural attraction in Portugal is found in the far north, and it is Parque Nacional da Peneda-Gerês. The rocky landscape of this beautiful mountainous area is noted for its lush vegetation, picturesque waterfalls, clear blue lakes, and breathtaking valleys.

This national park is popular with hikers and other outdoor pursuits enthusiasts. Watch out for golden eagles soaring over the tree tops while wild boar and wolves wander through the foliage. There are marked trails, designated campsites, and quaint villages with unique guesthouses.

Porto is the second largest city in Portugal and the main tourist destination in the north. Some tourists come to view the unique architecture featuring fine Neoclassical and Baroque churches. Look out for the granite walls and pretty blue and white ceramic tiles used to decorate buildings such as the beautiful main railway station.

Other visitors come to visit the surrounding vineyards and take part in the harvests or sample the wines. River cruises are also popular and provide access to the beautiful Douro Valley where you can see traditional terraced hillsides and pretty hamlets.

Midway between Porto and Lisbon you can find Coimbra and its famous hilltop university. Founded in 1290, Velha Universidade is one of the world’s oldest educational establishments. The Baroque library is a particularly popular attraction containing over 250,000 books, some dating to the 12 th century. The whole university campus is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Lisbon is the cultural capital of Portugal. The best way to explore the old city is by jumping on the historic tram #28 that takes you up the steep streets. This vibrant city is home to many world-class museums and fascinating historic buildings.

The most iconic building in the city is the ancient Torre de Belém fortress guarding the entrance to the city from an island close to the northern bank of the Tagus River. But if you are especially interested in history and architecture, it is worth taking a day trip to nearby Sintra .

Sintra is a renowned hilltop retreat containing palaces and other historic buildings. Its most popular attractions are the Palácio da Pena, the Castelo dos Mouros, and Palácio Nacional. Sintra is especially popular for walking tours because of its hills and the many breathtaking vistas they offer.

Most people who head down south are more interested in sunbathing on the beaches and partying at night than any historic or cultural attractions. But they are missing out on some amazing sights.

Faro’s old town is built on Roman foundations and is filled with a selection of medieval buildings gathered inside a 16 th -century city wall. The 13 th -century cathedral is noted for its tall tower providing panoramic views across the Parque Natural da Ria Formosa.

A wonderful Tour Will definitely book again

Overall, I got to see a lot of the surrounding areas of Lisbon. However, this is not a tour, this is a package, and should be advertised as such. The organisation and communication with Omega was terrible. I repeatedly asked for the location of my accommodation (which was actually lucky!) but was still told the wrong place and had to make an international call (which cost me additional money) after being dropped at the wrong hotel. I had also asked about being booked in for an extra night and being advised about the cost, told them I would book my own accommodation, only to find on my arrival that it was booked and paid for already, meaning I had double booked unnecessary accommodation elsewhere. I was also not advised about morning pickups until I specifically asked. The actual day trips were well organized although the quality of the guides varied. The one day we had an English only guide she seemed disinterested and it was clear to me that she was uncomfortable speaking in English. The days where the information was being translated into multiple languages it felt like English was being given the least amount of information. I would not recommend that someone does this package again, particularly as you can book each day trip separately and the overall organization was terrible.

Our flight was delayed from Montreal and we informed Europamundo about the delay.When we arrived at the Lisbon airport, we were so surprised to see our driver all-dressed up with his mercedez benz. The driver was so helpful.So he droved us to the VIP Hotel.Our hotel looks nice and the employees seemed friendly and helpful, they even provided us a map of Lisbon downtown area so we can explore around the vicinity because we arrived a day earlier for our tour.Our tour guide pedro met us in the Hotel lobby that evening.Pedro is very friendly and helpful and he is knwledgable about the places we visited.There is a younger tour guide that showed us around Lisbon areas and sorry I forgot his name..This younger guy is so excellent in giving details and information and he is very helpful in showing us around too in Belem,Los Jeronimos etc.Pedro went with us up to Fatima Sanctuary Place.What a beautiful place to be.So incredible!Ana is our tour guide in Madrid areas...gardens,castles,palace,Cathedral etc.Ana is very helpful and friendly and beautiful.We went touring around madrid and neighboring places with the tour group.Our tour group was excellent!We only knew each other for few days in the tour bus,but we had a wonderful time,laughing,shopping together for souvenirs and eating together like "old"friends.The employee at the Help desk in Praga hotel is very helpful too.He arranged a cabify for us to go to the airport due to taxi strike.Thanks so much to each and everyone for making our vacation so exciting and wonderful.God bless..Tom and Lila

From Santiago to Lisbon

I concur with Kristi's review. This tour is advertised as bilingual (spanish & english) but majority (like 90%) of the passengers on our excursion were south american tourists. You would benefit joining this tour if you understood & spoke a bit of spanish. We had 2 tour guides: our initial tour guide would speak a page worth in spanish then translate a sentence worth in english. Perhaps, its the organizer's fault to assign a not so english-proficient tour guide. However, the local tour guides in Porto & Lisbon were both excellent & fluent!!! Our 2nd tour guide for the remaining 6 days of our journey (Carmen) was AMAZING !!! We had an excellent driver as well. This tour has a great itinerary. Sadly, the english speakers on the bus missed out on the translations during the first part of the trip; more could have been said, but mainly limited to the tour guide's knowledge & ability to express herself fluently in english. All the hotels we stayed at were decent, rooms were very clean & comfortable and served full breakfast buffet. Though the dinner at Hesperia Vigo was drab. Also, all the hotels assigned on this trip (none had swimming pool) were located in the outskirts of town, meaning you have to take a taxi if you want to visit the sites or restaurants downtown. Overall, it was a very nice vacation - the weather was fantastic entire week, had great food & wine, met some nice people and saw beautiful sceneries!

Beautiful country but guide needs to pay more attention to his customers. When we go in for a tour, he needs to stay with us and talk about the place, not wonder around on his own or with his guest. Or wait for us to pay for our food and then he pays the difference! Also your mini bus needs to be a little more comfortable and maintained , not teared tents for small items, and the overhead space needs to be tented or can be closed so items like backpacks, umbrellas, and jackets would not fall from the open overhead space on our heads. The  Order of the Templars   or Order of the Temple created in 1118 in Jerusalem composed by nine French knights among them Hugo de Payens and Geoffroy de Saint-Omer aiming to watch over the conveniences and protection of Christian pilgrims in the sacred territory.

They brought them rivalries and fears, feelings that in the fourteenth century ended in their extinction, being declared guilty of heresy, defamation of the name of God, as well as sacred things, worshiping other gods, sexual perversions and practicing magic.

Fatima  is originally  Moorish,  the name of one of the daughters of Muhammad, according to the legend Fatima was a Moorish  princess, who was kidnapped during the Cristian reconquest, under the command of D. Afonso Henriques,.

The  Apparitions of 1917 , Fatima where on May 13, 1917 three children from humble families, went to pasture after the mass the flock of sheep in the lands of the father of one of them, there they felt a flash of lightning, in a bright and serene sky, according to one of them, they witness “a Lady dressed all in white, brighter than the sun.

Lady Mary told them, she said that he would return to six times in a row on the 13th of the next moths, at the time Fatima was a completely unknown village, but from then on, millions of pilgrims from all over the world came every year, with two Basilicas and a small one called the “Capelinha” or small Chapel.

Fátima – sanctuary.

Our Fatima Tomar Tour begins by visiting the Sanctuary of  Fatima , the largest Marian shrine in Europe and one of the largest in the world, which receives millions of visitors every year.

This was the place where in 1917 the Lady Virgin appeared to three children of humble families who were helping the parents with shepherding of sheep, t heir names were: Lucia, Jacinta and Francisco.  Time to attend Mass (optional).

Visit to the two Basilicas there; Our Lady of the White Rosary, Holy Trinity and the  Chapel of the Apparitions ,  the first Chapel to be built shortly after the apparitions, located in the center of the Sanctuary is a place not to be missed, not for grandeur, but for the meaning, it is mandatory to be visit.

At one end the  Basilica of Our Lady of the White Rosary , built in 1928 with a neo-baroque architecture, here you will find the tombs of the three little shepherd children (Francis and Jacinta), and now also the tomb of Sister Lucia, in the other end the imposing  Basilica of the Holy Trinity , built in 2007 with more than 8,000 seats and 40,000 m² of area designed by the Greek architect Alexandros Tombazis.

Fatima – Shepherds Houses

Next we will visit the houses where the children lived in  Valinhos  a few kilometers from the Shrine, extremely well preserved,  from here that they would bring the sheep to the actual place of the Santuary (Cova da Iria) and again back home.

This was their daily routine, by v isiting these houses we get a very precise picture of the countryside portuguese families way of life, in the begining of the 20th century.  Nowadays one of Lucia de Jesus’s nieces, Maria dos Anjos, lives next door to the house she was born.

Tomar – Convent of Christ

After a journey of approximately 45 minutes, we will visit one of the ex-libris of the  Order of the Knights Templa r  in Europe, later Order of Christ in Portugal, the Convent of Christ.

Visiting the  Templars Castle/ Convent of Chris t  is traveling into time and understand the power and prestige of this military order in Portugal.

With the extinction of the Order of the Templars in 1311, the Portuguese King Dinis delivered the castle and all there patrimony to the Order of Christ. Latter the earthquake of 1755 in Portugal, caused several damages in its structure and during the following century was altered, which adulterated the austerity of its initial architecture.  

Tomar – Old Town Center

Tomar  with its historic center, quite picturesque, with small streets lined with buildings of great cultural significance, a walking area of great delight.

The oldest part of the city (Medieval) orientated in cardinal points in cross, with a convent in each of its extremes, in the center the Republic Square, with the Mother Church, to the west the hill of the Castle and the Convent of Christ.

Numerous shops of traditional commerce here we can also find the oldest coffee known for its almond and chila Cheesecakes and the traditional  Tomar slices , made with egg yolks and boiled in a special saucepan, the legend says that has invented by a person from Tomar in the mid-twentieth century.

Santa Maria Olival

Another importance place to visit will be the  church of Santa Maria do Oliva l,  built in the 12th century and was the headquarter of the Order of the Templars, classified as National Monument in 1910 and is one of the most emblematic examples of Gothic art in Portugal.

Here the city funder Gualdim Pais is buried as well as other Grand Masters of the Order, a Church that seems smaller than in reality is once buried two meters below the ground.

Fatima is a small town, a world-renowned Christian centre, located 120 km north of Lisbon. Once upon a time, Fatima was a rugged desert region with a few trees, where shepherds and farmers met from time to time, cultivating small plots of land behind low stone walls.

Fatima became world-famous and became one of the most frequented Christian pilgrimage centres due to the apparition of the Virgin Mary in 1917 to three Portuguese shepherd’s children – Lucia dos Santos, her cousin Jacinta and her brother Francisco. The Virgin Mary appeared to the children for six months and predicted the future events of the 20th century.

In Fatima you can see the majestic basilica, built in neo-baroque style and framed by an esplanade. An enormous oak tree has been preserved: it is here that the Virgin Mary appeared to the three little shepherds. In a wide area in front of the basilica there is a path along which the believers walk on their knees. In the glass chapel-temple built on the site of Fatima you can see the statue of the Virgin Mary.

There are hospitals on either side of the Basilica of Fatima. The main street, named after one of the three children (Francisco Martha), starts from Fatima Square. Religious souvenir shops, museums and hotels line this street from north to south.

Every year on 13 May and 13 October, thousands of pilgrims come here to celebrate the anniversary of the miraculous event of Fatima in Portugal.

There are few places in Europe that have as much meaning for Christians as the shrines of Fatima. By coming here, you will be able to better understand the religious culture of Portugal. Pilgrims, in their thousands, travel to Cova da Iria, a place only two kilometres from the centre of Fatima, east of the A1 motorway. In the vicinity of the city you will find several other motorways, including the Correia da Silva motorway, which has a bus station and a tourist office. There are many hotels and restaurants in Fatima, as well as other tourist facilities designed to serve all these visitors. From window displays, passers-by “look” at statues of the Virgin Mary and busts of the Pope of Rome.

By presenting here what to see in Fatima, I want to say of course that seeing in Cova da Iria which is actually the place you will visit and to which you will find all the most impressive religious monuments. Find below the main religious monuments to visit in Fatima and which attract millions of pilgrims every year from Europe and around the world.

Sanctuary of Our Lady of Fatima

The Sanctuary of Our Lady of Fatima is an absolutely magnificent complex of architectural structures that includes a small chapel and the Basilica of the Virgin Mary. It is an area where more than 150,000 people can gather at one time, which gives you an idea of its great size.

The construction of the church began in the late 1920s of the 19th century. The building itself was not very large, but as the demand and importance of pilgrim gatherings in Fatima grew, the outline was enlarged so that more people could gather there.

Church of the Holy Trinity in Fatima

The church is considered to be one of the largest in the world in terms of total interior area (over 10,000 square meters). The construction has been completed since 2004 for three years. The inauguration took place 90 years after the Blessed Virgin Mary met with children.

In the interior corridors there are resting places for believers, a cafeteria, about fifty confessional rooms and several chapels.

We should also mention the design of the walls. In addition to the beautiful mosaic, the walls are decorated with words from the Bible, translated into more than 20 languages.

Chapel of the Apparitions of the Virgin Mary at Fatima

The chapel was built in 1919 on the place where the children met the Virgin Mary. A few years later the chapel was destroyed. The decision of the local authorities was to restore the chapel.

The children met the Mother of God on May 13 for the first time. Therefore, this day is traditionally celebrated as the anniversary of the event. A large number of pilgrims come to Fatima and the Chapel of the Apparition of the Virgin Mary becomes the most visited place in the city.

Statue of John Paul II in Fatima

The perfectly executed sculpture of John Paul II is located next to the “new” Basilica of the Holy Trinity in Fatima. The sculpture is very beautiful and pleasant to look at. It is thought that John Paul II may have been part of the third prophecy of the Virgin Mary.

In 1981 in the Italian capital, the pope was shot. The wound was not fatal because at the time of the shooting he reportedly saw a girl in the crowd with the image of Our Lady of Fatima in her hands and therefore turned slightly.

Fatima Wax Museum

Visiting the Wax Museum of Fatima is an excellent opportunity not only to appreciate the talent and skill of the artists who worked on the creation of the exhibitions but also to recall a little bit of the history of the city. The idea of the Wax Museum of Fatima and its creation appeared at the beginning of the 80s of the last century.

In 1984, the doors of the Wax Museum of Fatima were opened for the first visitors. The main idea was to present the most significant and important historical events related to religious themes. You can see scenes dedicated to children’s encounters with the Virgin Mary, the figures of many famous inhabitants and other interesting exhibits.

Ethnographic House-Museum of Aljustrel in Fatima

On the very outskirts of the town of Fatima is a small village. It is here that the children were born who in 1917 met the Blessed Virgin Mary for the first time. The museum is a small house that contains various exhibitions about the “Miracle of Fatima”, as well as tools and objects from peasant life. On the walls you can see many paintings, which describe the life of the village before and after the apparition of the Virgin.

Visiting the courtyard, you can get acquainted with ancient equipment and trades such as blacksmiths or ovens to discover all the equipment and the real work place of the master mason.

Restaurant Ponto de Encontro in Fatima

The restaurant “Ponto de Encontro” in Fatima (port. Ponto de Encontro) is the restaurant of Fatima. There are of course many others, but this one is particularly popular with tourists and locals alike. Thanks to the spacious and comfortable rooms, this “meeting place” is often reserved for weddings and other celebrations.

The menu consists mainly of meat dishes. The calling card of the establishment is grilled meat. It is all the more worthwhile as several dishes are prepared according to old Portuguese recipes.

Lucia’s house in Fatima

Lucia was the mother of one of the three children who met the Blessed Virgin Mary. Her house has been turned into a museum where the attributes of peasant life are displayed.

Ouram’s Dinosaur footprints in Fatima

The conservation area is a little far from the town of Fatima. In this place, in the mid-1990s of the last century, dinosaur footprints were discovered. Thanks to the petition of the National Museum of Natural History, the area where the tracks were found was given the status of a natural monument. In the spring of 1997, this emblem became accessible to everyone.

History of Fatima in Portugal

Many years ago, on May 13, 1917, after Sunday Mass, three little shepherds (Jacinta, Francisco and Lucia) from the town of Cova da Iria, near the small Portuguese town of Fatima, were raising their sheep near their little peasant house. Suddenly, lightning struck and they decided that with the onset of the storm, the sheep had to be sheltered somewhere. 

At that moment, the image of the most holy Theotokos appeared to them, which according to them, shone brighter than the sun. When the children told the adults about it, no one believed them, but the miracle was repeated on the 13th of each month until October. The last and sixth phenomenon appeared on October 13th. In 1917 70,000 people, including people who were skeptical about the belief and these apparitions were able to observe the phenomenon. 

And the solar miracle of Fatima appeared to the whole crowd: the sun “danced” in the sky in circles, then became completely black for several minutes before returning to its place. The next day Portugal learned that several cripples who had seen the Mother of God had been miraculously healed …

When a temple was built on the site of the phenomenon in 1944, the sick and maimed began to come to it from all over Portugal. In a special place near the basilica, parishioners bring wax body parts (stomachs, heads, liver, legs …) in the hope of healing. According to the Catholic tradition, the pilgrim must go to the temple and kneel down. 

The Virgin Mary gave the children three prophecies. In the years that have passed since these events, the predictions of the Virgin have been repeated: the atheistic era of socialism began in Russia, the world was shaken by the horrors of the Second World War and the coalition of pro-communist states collapsed. 

Amazing chronological chains are associated with the dates of the events of the Mother of God of Fatima. For example, the attempt on the life of Pope John Paul II took place on the anniversary of his first apparitio. The miraculous healing of the Pope was another confirmation of the predictions of 1917. 

Professor Kruchitti, who operated on him, said a 9mm bullet pierced the Pope’s body, improbably bypassing all vital organs as if an invisible hand were guiding him: the bullet was placed a few millimetres from the main aorta, the damage to which resulted in instant death. 

“It was a real miracle and I know who to be grateful to. One hand pointed the gun and the other changed the orientation of the bullet,” said John Paul II himself. 

On 25 March 1984 in St. Peter’s Square in Rome, in front of the statue of the Mother of God brought from Fatima, John Paul II, in union with the bishops of the whole world, dedicated to Russia and to all humanity the Most Holy Heart of the Blessed Virgin, in response to the request of the Mother of God of Fatima.

Fatima, Portugal in 2024: an independent travel guide

Fatima is the most important pilgrimage site in Portugal. This is where an apparition of Mary appeared to three shepherd children, six times over the course of six months, culminating in the Miracle of the Sun, which was witnessed by over 70,000 people.

These events draw many millions of pilgrims and visitors to Fatima every year, and at the site of the apparitions, a massive religious complex has been constructed. Within this complex is a beautiful Basilica, a colossal church, a sprawling plaza, and the tiny chapel Mary instructed to be built.

This article will provide a tourist guide to Fatima, and help you plan the perfect trip to Fatima.

Is it worth visiting Fatima?

There are two types of tourists who visit Fatima; 1) The religious; those who wish to pray, make a blessing or as a personal pilgrimage 2) The curious; those who are interested but not deeply religious, or simply want to visit a famous location in Portugal

If you are visiting Fatima as the first group, you will adore your time in the town. The Santuário de Fátima has a deeply religious atmosphere, you can join a church service at the Capelinha das Aparições (site of Mary’s first apparition), perform a dedication (via a lighting candle), along with visiting the two Basilicas (Basílica de Nossa Senhora do Rosário and the Basílica da Santíssima Trindade).

If you are visiting as the second group, you may have mixed feelings about Fatima. The apparition of Mary and the Miracle of the Sun only occurred in 1917, so the entire complex is relatively modern, and if the truth be told, rather bland. The only standout building is the Nossa Senhora do Rosário Basilica, with all other structures massive but of a functional design. Once the main religious sites are seen, there is not much else to see or do in Fatima itself.

A day trip to Fatima

Fatima can be visited as a day trip from Lisbon, but involves either a 1h10m drive or 1h30m bus journey each way (public transport details are at the end of this article).

A typical visit to Fatima takes two hours, and this is sufficient time to visit the two basilicas, the Capelinha das Aparições, the waxwork museum and purchase some religious gifts from the countless gift shops. A visit will be longer if you plan to join a church service, or want to light a candle at the Capelinha das Aparições (there can be very long queues at peak times).

A good place to begin your day trip, and gain an understanding of Fatima is the Museu Interativo, which provides a detailed overview of the history of Fatima. The Museu de Cera de Fátima has beautiful wax statues and is recommended to extend a visit.

The shepherd's houses, in the village of Aljustrel (2.2km south from the Santuário de Fátima), have been restored to how they were in 1917, and are also worth including in the day trip. Most evenings between May and October there are beautiful candle processions, which are a magical experience (details provided further on).

Within Fatima, there is a wide choice of restaurants and cafes, and there are many good inexpensive options – primarily design for Portuguese visitors who would refuse to accept over-inflated tourist prices!

Generally, Fatima will only be a half-day trip, and if you are driving, we would recommend combining Fatima with the castle of Ourém or the limestone caves of Grutas da Moeda .

Advice: It is not advisable to visit Fatima at the weekends or the 13th of each month, as it can be very busy. Also, Fatima is not ideal on a wet day, as there is little shelter within the Santuário de Fátima. Below is an interactive map detailing the main sights of Fatima

Is it worth spending a night in Fatima?

It’s worth staying in the Fatima region but maybe not necessarily in the town itself, as there are many more fascinating destinations in the surrounding region.

To the west is the historic city of Tomar and the pretty hilltop castle of Ourém, while to the east are the two grand monasteries of Alcobaça and Batalha, and the charming beach town of Nazaré. Important days at Fatima

The main pilgrimage days to Fatima align with the dates of the six apparitions, which all occurred on 13th of each month, from the 13th May (first vision), up to the Miracle of the Sun (13th October 1917).

The 13th May and 13th October are major pilgrimage days to Fatima (the Peregrinação de Fátima) and on the preceding night (the 12th) there is a beautiful candlelit procession led by the bishop and church leaders.

Please be respectful

Fatima is an important pilgrimage site, with many people undertaking devotions due to illness, bereavement, or personal difficulties. The Santuário de Fátima is not a place for group photos, selfies or simply gawping at pilgrims. Always come respectfully dressed. It should be noted, that all religions and faiths are welcomed at Fatima.

The Capelinha das Aparições and the Pope’s bullet

The tiny Capelinha das Aparições chapel is the focal point for all devotion to Fatima, and its construction was instructed by Mary.

The actual site where Mary appeared, just in front of the chapel, is marked by a statue of Our Lady of Fatima. Encompasses both the chapel and statue of Mary, is a modern open-sided church, and is where the masses are held.

Pope John Paul II had a close connection with the Lady of Fátima, believing the third secret of Fatima foretold the assassination attempt on his life in 1981, and protected him during it. In devotion, one of the four bullets which struck him is encased in the crown on the Our Lady of Fatima statue.

Insight: When pilgrims pay homage to Fatima by walking on their knees or crawling, they are heading to the Capelinha das Aparições, and not the grand Basílica de Nossa Senhora do Rosário.

The Azinheira Tree

When Mary first appeared to the Shepherds in 1917, she appeared beneath an Azinheira tree (holm oak or holly oak). This blessed but unfortunate tree was soon stripped away by locals wishing to make holy relics from its branches and trunk.

Lighting a Candle at Fatima

One of the religious highlights of Fatima is to light a candle and pray for a special intention at the Capelinha das Aparições. Candles can be purchased from the stall just to the rear of the chapel, for the inexpensive price of €0.80, with the larger 60cm candles only costing €2.70. Insight: The candles are a brown colour as they are moulded from the waste wax collected from the hundreds of burning candles

The shepherd’s houses

One of the highlights of Fatima are the houses that the shepherd's lived in as children. The two houses (the Casa de Jacinta e Francisco Marto and the Casa da Lúcia) have been restored to how they were in 1917, and even retain some of the original furniture.

At the bottom of the garden in Lúcia's house is the Poço do Arneiro well, and is where the angel (Anjo de Portugal) appeared to the children in 1916.

Travel between Lisbon and Fatima

Driving is the quickest way to travel to from Lisbon to Fatima. The route follows the A1 expressway and turns off at junction 8 (after passing through the hills of the Serras de Aire e Candeeiros), which leads to the many car parks surrounding Fatima. The only downside to the 92km journey along the fast A1 road, is the high toll of €8.40 each way. Insight: Lisbon airport is the nearest airport to Fatima and a private transfer costs €130 .

For public transport, bus travel is the only sensible option as Fatima train station is 20km to the east of the town, and there is no feasible travel option from the train station to the Santuário de Fátima.

The bus services are operated by Rede Expressos, the main intercity bus company of Portugal. There are up to 18 daily departures from Lisbon to Fatima, but tickets should be booked in advance, as popular services do sell out. The bus service departs from Sete Rios bus station in Lisbon, the journey takes 1h30m, and a single adult fare costs €12.80. We schedule guided tours for those willing to experience the Sanctuary of Fatima (Portugal) and the surrounding places related to the Angel of Peace and Our Lady apparitions. We provide an intimate and personalized full-day tour with a local professional guide.

We are waiting for you here, in the Virgin Mary's land, in the «altar of the world».

1st Part: Morning Tour

Our guided tour starts in Cova da Iria and includes a presentation and guided tour to the Sanctuary of Fatima and its main references, which include: the Chapel of the Apparitions (considered as "the heart" of the Marian Shrine and where the Virgin Mary appeared in 1917); the Basilica of Our Lady of the Rosary (where can be visited the tombs of the three little shepherds: Lucia dos Santos, St. Francisco and St. Jacinta Marto); and the modern Basilica of the Most Holy Trinity .

2nd Part: Afternoon Tour

Our guided tour continues to the surrounding apparition sites of the Angel of Peace , along with the place of the 4th apparition of Our Lady in August 19, 1917, who took place in Valinhos . We will also go to Aljustrel village to visit the late 19th century family houses of the three seers of Our Lady. The guided tour ends with a visit to the Parish Church of Fatima where the three shepherd children were baptized. All visits described are made by walking tour.

Our Lady of Fatima Tours in Portugal

One of the most breathtaking sights in all of Europe is undoubtedly Our Lady of Fatima Basilica, which is just a short ride from the port of Lisbon . If you're lucky enough to be setting sail on a Western European cruise , you'll have a chance to visit this renowned site.

In 1917, three shepherds reported that the Virgin Mary appeared to them in a vision. Since then, Fatima has become a popular pilgrimage spot, with thousands flocking to the site every day, hoping to also have a mystical experience.

One of the big draws of Fatima tours is the beauty of the Basilica, which features a 213-foot tower. It's possible to spend all day simply marveling at the beautiful architecture and droves of pilgrims, but there's also plenty of alternative activities scattered around the main area.

Those who book a Fatima tour as part of an excursion will be able to tour the area on their own for several hours. In addition to the many churches around the main square, there are also several shops for travelers to purchase mementos at. Lunch will not be provided, but travelers can use this opportunity to grab a bite on their own at one of the many nearby restaurants.

Our Fatima, Spain, and Lourdes tour is our most popular pilgrimage package. Travel between important holy shrines through Spain by deluxe motorcoach, and visit Salamanca, Alba de Tormes, Avila, Burgos, and Loyola before arriving in Lourdes. Day 1: Arrive in Lisbon

Upon landing at Lisbon airport, claim your baggage proceed to the arrival hall, where your tour guide and/or driver will greet you. In the afternoon, enjoy a panoramic tour of Lisbon, which will include St. Jerome's Monastery, built to give thanks to the Virgin Mary. We will drive by the Belem Tower and many landmarks, like; the 25th of April Bridge, the Basilica of the Star, and the Marquee of Pombal Square. Our last stop will be St. Anthony's Church. The patron saint of lost things is best known as St. Anthony of Padua (Italy), but he was born and baptized here in Lisbon, Portugal. The Church where we will celebrate Mass was built upon the site of St. Anthony's birth. Welcome dinner and overnight in Lisbon.

Day  2: Lisbon - Santarem - Fatima

Today, we will head to Fatima. On the way, we will stop at St. Stephens Church in the town of Santarem to celebrate Mass and venerate the 13th century Eucharistic Miracle. Continue to Fatima - this hamlet of Aljustrel, is the birthplace and home of the three shepherd children. Dinner and overnight in Fatima.

Day  3: Fatima

Today will surely be a memorable experience as you pray and meditate at one of Our Blessed Mother's apparition sites. Our Lady appeared to three shepherd children; Lucia (age 10), Jacinta (age 7), and Francisco (age 9). These apparitions occurred monthly from May until October of 1917. Historically, as the entire world was in turmoil amidst World War I, the most prominent message from Our Lady of Fatima was to pray for world peace. In her messages to the children, specifically in the second secret, she mentioned the destruction of the world. Our profoundly reflective day begins with a visit to the Little Chapel of the Apparitions simple, yet modern, which is the site where the Virgin Mary first appeared on May 13th in 1917. Follow with a visit to the stunning neoclassical Basilica of Our Lady of the Rosary. This Sacred space contains the tombs of St. Francisco, St. Jacinta, and Sister Lucia. View the monument that commemorates the Sacred Heart of Jesus in the square. Our Lady's messages included consistent reminders to pray the Rosary - the Basilica honors this, by featuring fifteen altars dedicated to the fifteen mysteries of the Rosary. While in the Basilica, you will feel, through the love of Our Lord and Lady, the many graces received here. Visit the museum with the exhibition: "Fatima: Light and Peace". Continue with a visit to the Holy Trinity Basilica. After free time for lunch, we will experience Christ's unconditional love by participating in the Stations of the Cross along the Via Sacra. "The Sacred Way" marks the path the shepherd children took to the first apparition of Our Lady of Fatima. The path is composed of fifteen small chapels in commemoration of the Passion of Our Lord. The fifteenth station, the Resurrection, can be found close to the Chapel of Calvary, dedicated to St. Stephen, King of Hungary. The day ends with a visit to Valinhos, the site of Our Lady's August 19th, 1917 Apparition, which was also the first and third apparition of the Angel. Your night will conclude with private devotions and a candlelight procession, requested by Our Lady (1917). Enjoy dinner and a comfortable night's rest in Fatima.

Day  4: Fatima - Salamanca

Depart Fatima and head to Salamanca, following a full breakfast at the hotel. Salamanca is a city in the Castilla y Leon region known for its large university, the oldest in Spain that is still active along with its prominent culture. Our walking tour will bring us to the most noteworthy sites, such as; the grand Plaza Mayor, an iconic square filled with food, shopping, and city events. La Clerecia, a church, and college of the Jesuit Order constructed in the seventeenth century. La Casa de las Conchas currently a public library and monument, decorated with shells that symbolize the famous pilgrimage to Santiago (El Camino). The University of Salamanca is the oldest University in Spain and the third oldest in Europe. The Roman Bridge is a national monument that extends along the River Tormes and is among Salamanca's sturdiest bridges. La Iglesia de San Marcos, constructed in the Romanesque style contains breathtaking paintings that portray many scenes of Our Lady's life. La Iglesia de San Martin is a Church devoted to St. Martin de Porres, who is the patron saint of mixed-race people and all those seeking interracial harmony. Visit the inside of the two joint Salamanca Cathedrals (old and new), one Romanesque style and the other Gothic style. Following this eventful day, you will return to your hotel for a delicious meal and overnight at your hotel in Salamanca.

Day  5: Salamanca - Alba de Tormes - Avila - Burgos

This morning, following breakfast, you will board the bus and enjoy a short transfer to the village of Alba de Tormes. This town is home to the Carmelite Monastery that Saint Teresa founded in 1571. Upon arrival in Alba de Tormes, celebrate Mass at the Monastery where she died and was buried. Following Mass, you will have the opportunity to visit the museum dedicated to St. Teresa of Avila, which also holds her incorrupt heart and left arm. Enjoy free time for lunch on your own before continuing to the medieval city of Avila. Upon arrival in Avila, you will immediately notice the perfectly preserved eleventh-century walls surrounding the old town. The conservation of architecture in this city, to which St. Teresa was born, deems its shrines, convents, and churches necessary to visit any Catholic pilgrimage. The Cathedral de Avila encompasses the Romanesque, Gothic, and Renaissance styles of its time with its artwork and architecture. La Basilica de San Vicente in Avila stands on the site of the martyrdom of St. Vincent. Visit the Incarnation Convent, where St. Teresa became a nun. Saint Teresa convinced Saint John of the Cross to reform the male Carmelite order, the reform she started when she met Saint John in Medina del Campo. After walking in the footsteps of St. Teresa, continue your journey to Burgos. Upon arrival in the historic capital of Old Castile, enjoy dinner. Following dinner, you will have the opportunity to explore the city of Burgos and admire its magnificent limestone, gothic-style Cathedral. Late this evening, you will return to your hotel for a restful overnight.

Day  6: Burgos - Loyola - Lourdes

Following breakfast, transfer from Burgos to Loyola to visit the birthplace of St. Ignatius, founder of the Jesuit Order. St. Ignatius dedicated himself to becoming a soldier of the Christian faith, and as a result of many tribulations, he wrote the ever-famous Spiritual Exercises. In Loyola, you will see the 17th-century Basilica dedicated to this remarkable saint - the Basilica is part of a series of buildings surrounding the "Holy House," or birthplace of St. Ignatius. When you visit these Holy places, you will also have the opportunity to pray at the most venerated room, where St. Ignatius prayed and began his conversion. After meditating on the life of this founder of the Jesuit Order, enjoy free time for lunch. We will continue to Lourdes for a spectacular view of the Pyrenees Mountains. Upon arrival in Lourdes, you will check-in to your hotel and enjoy a splendid dinner and peaceful overnight.

Day  7 & 8: Lourdes

Over the next two days, you will stay in a small town nestled within the Pyrenees Mountains. During your time in Lourdes, you will pray and meditate in yet another site of Our Lady's apparitions. Our Lady first appeared to Bernadette in 1858 and announced herself as "The Immaculate Conception" near the Grotto of Massabielle. During the first two apparitions, little Bernadette prayed the Rosary with Our Lady. She left without exchanging any words. During the following apparitions, Our Lady emphasized God's love for us, penance, and the necessity of performing acts of penance for sinners. Throughout your time in Lourdes, you will have the opportunity to attend Mass at the Grotto, where Our Lady appeared to Bernadette. Here you have opportunities to watch a video presentation that explains in detail the story of Lourdes; drink water from the miraculous spring that has healed many or submerge yourself in the healing baths. You will have the opportunity to experience Christ's unconditional love as you meditate upon the "life-size" Stations of the Cross that overlook the Grotto of Massabielle. You will walk in and meditate upon the footsteps of St. Bernadette. You will have the opportunity to see Boly Mill, the birthplace of St. Bernadette, and the "Cachot," an abandoned prison where Bernadette's impoverished family lived. Each evening following dinner, you will have an opportunity to attend the candlelight procession and the Rosary before a restful overnight.

Day  9: Departure

• 21 - 45 days prior to departure 50%
• 3 - 20 days prior to departure 80%.

A quarter mile from Burgos Cathedral, Abba Burgos provides free use of the heated indoor swimming pool, sauna, gym and pedal tennis court. There is free Wi-Fi in all areas of the property.

On the Santiago Pilgrimage Route, the Abba Burgos is next to Castillo Park and across from Atapuerca Convention Centre. Burgos Castle is a 5-minute walk away. The hotel offers great views of the city.

Fatima, Portugal (Example Itinerary)

Fatima, Portugal Itinerary

(please note: this is a past example of our itinerary to fatima, portugal.).

Day 1 – Departure from Newark Liberty International Airport.

Day 2 – Morning arrival in Portugal. We will visit the church of St. Anthony and have a panorama tour of Lisbon before departing for Santarem, where we will have Mass and revere the 12th century Eucharistic Miracle. Dinner and overnight in Fatima at Domus Pacis hotel.

Day 3 – After breakfast we will visit the hillside Shrine of Our Lady of Ortiga; Aljustrel, the home of the seers; the parish church of St. Anthony where we will have Mass. After lunch we will visit Valinhos, where the apparition of August 19th took place and where the Angel of Peace appeared to the children in 1916. Dinner and overnight in Fatima.

Day 4 – Morning Mass in the Capelinha, (the Chapel of the Apparitions), the rest of the day is free to experience the spirituality of Fatima, or as a group, walk the beautiful Hungarian Stations of the Cross. Optional side trip to Coimbra to visit the Carmelite convent where Sister Lucia lived for 57 years. Dinner and overnight in Fatima.

Day 5 – Morning Mass in the Capelinha. Afterwards we will pray and enjoy the spirituality with pilgrims from around the world.

Day 6 – Morning Mass at Domus Pacis Latin Chapel or you can join the many pilgrims in prayer at the “International Mass & Devotions”. Dinner and overnight in Fatima.

Day 7 – Morning Mass in the Capelinha. After breakfast, depart for the optional trip to Batalha, the great monument church built to commemorate St. Nuno’s great military victory and then visit the 12th century monastery of “Alcobaca”, we end our day in the beautiful coastal town of Nazare. Dinner and overnight in Fatima.

Day 8 – Morning departure for our flight home.

Shiels: Rare port tasting at Dusty’s Cellar in Okemos may trigger your trip to Portugal

If you are fortunate to have been to Portugal, a rare port tasting at Dusty’s Cellar, in Okemos at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, April 4 may transport your taste buds back. If you have not visited the popular, old world European destination, the once-in-a-lifetime sip of a 136-year-old vintage port served that night might have you booking your trip.

“I traveled with my family to an oceanside resort in Portugal when I was a teenager,” said Dusty’s Cellar proprietor Matt Rhodes. “My only wine memory was my dad Dusty buying it in bulk from the roadside.” 

Only 16 seats, at $325-per person, are currently available for tasting, which will be hosted by Dusty’s Cellars sommelier Jeremy Duggan. Charcuterie will be served while Duggan presents four Quinta do Vallado ports, including the 1888 vintage, a bottle of which retails for $5,000. Only 933 bottles were produced of the rare port, which will be poured from a Portuguese, hand-made replica of the crystal decanter used by Antonio Bernardo Ferreira I when he welcomed German Prince Frederich de Hesse-Cassel to the Quinta do Vallado estate, which ABF purchased in 1818.

Dusty’s guests will also sample a 20-year-old tawny port; and a fine, late bottled vintage from 2018, for comparison. Port, sweet and fortified, typically with berry, chocolate, caramel, and nut flavors, is usually served after dinner in smaller glasses. Tawny ports tend to have less sweetness. 

Quinto do Vallado, established in 1716, is one of the oldest estates in northern Portugal’s Douro Valley, one of the port winery destinations advised for tourists by “Made for Spain & Portugal,” the most connected custom tour provider in the region.

“We arrange private visits to top port cellars and wineries in the Douro Valley and Porto,” said Virginia Irurita, founder of Made for Spain and Portugal, which has been crafting and facilitating exclusive itineraries and experiences for international visitors for a quarter-century. “We also have access to one of the world’s top port experts in Sintra, outside Lisbon, so when travelers don’t go to Port or the Duoro Valley, they can still enjoy a fabulous experience with a master.”

Irurita’s advice led me to the medieval village of Sintra and its castle where I sampled white port for the first time in the shadow of the National Palace of Sintra with the Palace of Pena on the horizon above. I felt as if I were in a storybook.

I stayed, in Sintra, at the historic, 1787, ornate, 29-room Tivoli Palacio de Seteais royal hotel where I luxuriated in its scenic gardens and spa.

My walk outside the hotel gates to Quinta do Regaleira, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, was an unforgettable and magical experience. The wooded pathways and castle ruins, Italian fountains, chapel and ponds are enchanting.

Back in Lisbon, Tivoli’s 80-year-old hotel, the Avenida Liberdade, serves port overlooking oceanfront Portugal’s capital, with its shops, museums, dining and dramatic, traditional Fado music sessions.

“Port wine is, little by little, getting a big place in the world,” said Irurita. “I love having a porto tonic at sunset overlooking the city of Porto and the Douro River as it flows into the Atlantic.”
