Standing in front of a shrine in Tunic

Tunic presents a whimsical and challenging adventure in a vibrant world. With many dangers that lurk in every corner, you’ll need to acquire the right tools for the job. Here’s our Tunic walkthrough for the East Forest to help you get the Sword and Shield .

Table of contents

The wooden stick and the sealed temple, entering the east forest, how to get the sword, the east belltower and the guard captain.

  • Back at the Overworld, the map, and the Windmill merchant

How to get the Old House Key

How to get the shield.

Standing outside of a small cavern in Tunic, where you get the Wooden Stick.

Once you start Tunic ’s campaign, head straight along the path until you see a small cavern. Inside, you can pick up your first weapon, a flimsy Wooden Stick . You can equip the Wooden Stick by pressing LB, and assigning a button while it’s highlighted. Although it’s fairly weak, it’s helpful during the early stages since you’ll need to smack a few enemies with it.

Continue north — or straight ahead due to the isometric camera angle — and interact with the Fox Shrine to heal up (as seen in the image at the top of our Tunic walkthrough guide). Let’s call this the Central Fox Shrine .

Tunic’s sealed temple

Past this point, you can enter the golden doors. Advance further and tag the two obelisks to open the pathway. A short cutscene will play where the trapped fox spirit shows three seals that need to be broken. Once that’s done, the Sealed Temple can’t be opened until much later in the game.

Standing at in intersection in Tunic.

Head west from the Central Fox Shrine until you see a telescope and the East Belltower Key . Pick up the key and bring it to a doorway just southeast of the shrine. This will lead you to the East Belltower. There’s not a lot we can do here now, so just follow the hallway and climb down the ladder.

You should then find yourself in the East Forest. Upon reaching the signboard, you can enter Guardhouse 1 to your left. Climb up and exit the upper area to open a chest with Potion Flask #1 .

An intersection in Tunic that leads to a guardhouse, a lower level, and the hero’s grave and the sword.

Go back to the signboard, and head to the next section. There’s a shrine here, as well as several paths:

  • The narrow path has a couple of chests. There’s also a ladder that leads to the Lower Forest filled with Spiders. You can just pick up the loot since the Spiders are annoying to fight.
  • Make a mental note of the ladder to Guardhouse 1 (yes, a means of reaching the upper area of that fortress).

An intersection in Tunic’s East Forest, showing the path to a second guardhouse

Continue to the lower right edge to see the next part. Before you go to the Hero’s Grave, you can enter Guardhouse 2. Inside, you’ll acquire 2x Bombs.

Inside a cave in Tunic, with a staircase, two guards, and a ladder leading up.

If you keep going down the ladder, you’ll be in the Lower Forest. Go to the left past the hostiles and open the chest with Firecrackers . You can then climb back up (it’s the same narrow path near the shrine).

Standing in front of the path in Tunic’s East Forest that leads to the Hero’s Grave.

Make your way back to the entrance of Guardhouse 2. This time, break the vases so you can traverse the cliffside path to the Hero’s Grave.

There are lots of flying mobs and Rudelings here, but you can squeeze through an opening to the left of the gate.

Getting the sword in Tunic.

Loop around and activate the switch to raise the gate. Pass through and go all the way to the end. You’ll now have the Sword in Tunic . This weapon has a wider arc, and it also allows you to destroy bushes (grass cubes) in your surroundings.

Tunic’s East Forest path that leads to the East Belltower and the Guard Captain

Return to the East Forest shrine. Now that you have the sword, you can slash the bushes to climb upward. Follow the bridge until you arrive at the East Belltower’s exterior. Continue going up so you can pull the lever and open the doorway.

Inside Tunic’s East Bellower interior, showing paths that lead to the Guard Captain, a Potion Shard, a Potion Flaw, and a shrine.

Inside, there are a few things worth noting:

  • Pull the lever to create a ladder that can be used to climb down.
  • The chest on this floor has Potion Shard #1 . Each time you acquire three of these, you’ll get an extra potion charge.
  • If you haven’t obtained it yet, you can grab Potion Flask #1 as well.

tunic fast travel east forest

If you use the topmost exit, you’ll be in a chamber with the Guard Captain miniboss . We use the term loosely because it’s quite a chump.

Focus first on defeating the Rudeling so its attacks won’t annoy you. Then, whenever the Guard Captain is about to charge, just dodge and whack it a couple of times. Wait for it to charge once more, attack twice, and repeat until it’s downed.

Climbing a rope in Tunic’s East Belltower

Head to the next room and open the chest for Potion Flask #2 . Continue up the staircase until you’re at the dais overlooking the area. Hit the obelisk to activate it, and then interact with the rope ladder so you have a means of going down.

Lastly, there’s a small nook here at the bottom where the slime mobs are. Slash the bushes and squeeze through to find a chest. There are other items here, too, but you won’t be able to obtain them yet.

The Overworld, the map, and the Windmill merchant

Standing outside of Tunic’s East Bellower, showing a path that leads to a circled Instruction Booklet page.

Upon exiting the East Belltower, you’ll be back at the Overworld. The path off to the side here has an Instruction Booklet page . Pick this up because this is Tunic ’s Overworld Map , one of the most important page collectibles in the game. Although the directions aren’t clear, you should still be able to take note of the zones and points of interest.

The Windmill is fairly close to this spot. You should head inside, not minding the pitch-black room.

At the very end, a giant skeletal spirit will spawn. Don’t worry because it’s the merchant. You can purchase items from the merchant using the coins you’ve amassed. This includes Potion Flask #3 for 300 coins.

Collecting potion shard 2 in Tunic’s East Forest

Before you continue, return to the Central Fox Shrine, and head one screen down and to the left. Slash the plants, and walk along the river’s edge to pick up Potion Shard #2 .

Standing next to the telescope in Tunic’s East Forest

Next, from the Central Fox Shrine, go west to where you initially found the East Belltower Key. Remember the telescope there? Well, the important tidbit here is the door down below. This is the Old House, but we need the key for it.

Standing next to the Old House Key in Tunic’s East Forest

Continue along the path moving down/south until you see several steps. A short distance away, you’ll see a Rudeling and an even tougher-looking variant. If you’re fast, you can dodge and sprint to grab the Old House Key .

Standing inside Tunic’s East Forest Old House.

Make your way back to the Old House, and enter it. Inside, you’ll find a chest with only a single piece of gold. However, there’s a slightly hard-to-see nook that you can go through behind the curtain.

Follow this hallway and you’ll be able to pick up the Shield in Tunic . You don’t need to open your inventory to equip it, as your character will block whenever you hold down RT. Naturally, mitigating hits will slowly deplete your stamina, too.

Standing in front of a wall puzzle in Tunic’s East Forest Old House

Finally, pull the lever and enter the next room. This has a Wall Puzzle that requires you to press the D-pad buttons based on the starting point on the left (symbolized by a diamond). In short, you’ll need to press up, right, down, left, down, and right to open it. Inside, you can acquire another booklet page.

That does it for our Tunic walkthrough for the early-game experience in the East Forest to obtain the Sword and Shield. Your next objective takes you Beneath the Well for the Lantern item. This allows you to see in the Dark Tomb, which, consequentially, leads to the West Garden zone.

Tunic East Forest guide: how to defeat the Guard Captain and find the East Belltower in Tunic

Here's how to get through the East Forest in Tunic

Want to find the East Belltower in Tunic? After getting the sword from Hero's Grave , you'll find yourself seemingly trapped in the East Forest. The way you came is now inaccessible due to a fallen ladder, so you'll need to find another way back to the Overworld. Fortunately, that new sword should come in handy by allowing you to access new areas.

In this guide, we'll walk you through the East Forest in Tunic so that you can get back to the East Belltower and ring the bell within, which you'll need to do to get into the Sealed Temple.

Tunic East Forest guide

After grabbing the sword from Hero's Grave, make your way back to the East Forest by cutting through the bushes blocking the stairs. Rest at the East Forest save point and then head up the nearby ladders and kill the Rudeling enemies. Climb the next set of ladders and make your way across the bridge to find a locked gate. There are more ladders that you can climb to the left, so make your way up and kill the Rudelings. Then, take the next set of ladders (there sure is a lot of climbing here) and head over to the lever, which you can use to open the locked gate. Use the lever and then make your way back down and through the gate to get into Guardhouse 1.

In Guardhouse 1, you'll see a passage ahead that you can take. This leads to the East Belltower, but we recommend taking a slight detour first. Open the nearby chests to get a health potion fragment and some more currency, and then use the lever to reveal a new set of ladders. Use these to get down and kill the enemies below, and then use the wooden ladders to climb up to a new area. Follow the path around and head outside to find a health potion in a treasure chest. This is a permanent upgrade that will reset whenever you rest, so now you have a health potion to use whenever you're in a tough situation. Very useful!

How to defeat the Guard Captain in Tunic

When you're ready, head back into Guardhouse 1 and make your way back over to the original entrance. Follow the passage that we previously said to avoid to stumble into your first boss encounter against the Guard Captain. The captain has a Rudeling as backup, so kill them first and then focus on the boss.

This boss fight should prove quite simple, as the Guard Captain telegraphs their attacks obviously before lunging forward. Roll to avoid these lunges and then unleash a flurry of sword slashes to quickly whittle down its health bar and emerge victorious. If you do take a hit, remember to use that health potion you found earlier.

How to find the East Belltower in Tunic

After defeating the Guard Captain, use the nearby lever to get into the next room, where you'll find a treasure chest with another health potion. Make your way up the steps behind this chest and climb the ladder at the top to get back into the East Belltower. This is the same room you previously passed through when travelling to the Hero's Grave to find your sword, but you'll find yourself on a higher platform that you couldn't previously access. Hit the large structure nearby with your sword to ring the bell and then use the rope to climb back down and head back out into the Overworld.

That's everything you need to know to find the East Belltower in Tunic. If you're not sure what to do next, check out our complete Tunic walkthrough to find your next steps in the adventure. If you're looking for some useful items, take a look at our guides on how to find a shield in Tunic and how to find a wand in Tunic .

Tunic East Forest Guide – Full Walkthrough

  • Getting Started

Finding a Sword

Ringing the east forest bell, cunning like a fox.

There were so many incredible indies that blew us away in 2022. The outstanding speed run platformer Neon White . The colorful Cult Management sim Cult of the Lamb , and the chilling text-based adventure Norco to name but a few.

However, it’s hard to believe that we got a top-down adventure RPG that managed to take the Zelda formula and elevate it further.

Tunic is an outstanding game and one that can be tricky if you don’t give the title the respect it deserves. Yes, the little fox is cute, as is the world. But if you don’t stay alert, you’ll probably die a lot.

So, with that in mind, we aim to offer a full walkthrough that allows you to make it from start to end with as little issue as possible. So let’s get going. This is Indie Game Culture’s Tunic East Forest Guide.

Getting Started

Okay, so let’s get going on this grand adventure. The first thing we need to do is get ourselves some sort of weapon. You know, because it’s dangerous to go alone and all that nonsense.

tunic fast travel east forest

So head from your starting point forward, and you will eventually come to a doorway with torches on either side. Enter and open the Chest. This will give you a Stick. It’s not exactly the most proficient weapon, but it’s better than nothing.

Using this, you will be able to progress along the opening area and defeat the Blob enemies in your path.

There isn’t much to do in the opening area other than get your bearings, but you’ll need to access a Key that will open the door to the East Forest.

This is in the top left corner of this starting area. It shouldn’t be too hard to find. But here is a visual for those struggling to find it.

tunic fast travel east forest

Then, you can return to the Locked Door from before, and you can exit to the East Forest area.

tunic fast travel east forest

Through that door, you will find your first Game Manual Page, which will essentially teach you the base controls, but it is best to seek these out as they not only act as collectibles but offer tips and info that may help you in a pinch.

tunic fast travel east forest

You’ll then pass through an area with a few more Blobs and another Manual Page, and after dropping down a Broken Ladder. You’ll find yourself in The East Forest.

First things first, you need to upgrade that Stick for a shiny new Sword. Not only because it will allow you to beat enemies easier, but also because it will allow you to chop Small Trees and access new areas.

Head out into the Forest and immediately be on alert, as you’ll encounter new Hedgehog enemies that can shoot Shards from range. It’s best to hit and roll to avoid taking too much damage.

Then, after dispatching them, head onward and to the right. This is where you will find a new Checkpoint.

Before you enter the Guardhouse up ahead, you’ll want to head back toward the door on the left, which will take you into a cave with a bunch of slimes. You can fight them off or avoid them. Then, head up the Ladder.

tunic fast travel east forest

Here, you will have to fight a Hedgehog on a narrow ledge, so try to exercise caution. When you defeat them, head outside, and in a chest, you’ll find your first Magic Potion, which can be used to replenish HP.

Now, return to the Guardhouse Door from before, but instead of going into Guardhouse 2, head down the narrow path around to the right. This will lead to the Path To Hero’s Grave.

tunic fast travel east forest

Here, you will need to fight a series of Hedgehogs and Rudelings. You’ll have to fight your way up the stairs near the metal gate. Then, go across and down the Ladder on the right to activate a Lever, which will open the Metal Gate.

tunic fast travel east forest

You can then return to the Gate, head on through, and at the top of the Stairs, you’ll find a Fox Statue holding a Sword. Be sure to swap this out for your Stick, as it will allow you to get to new areas and Chests.

Now head back to Guardhouse 2 again, and use your new Sword to chop the Small Trees blocking the Ladder up. You’ll have to fight more Rudelings to get to the next Locked Metal Gate. To combat these enemies, it’s best to stay on the offensive to stagger them and fight them one-on-one if possible.

tunic fast travel east forest

Chop Trees and kill Rudelings as you go, and then use the Lever at the top of the tower to open the Metal Gate down below. Then, clamber down and head inside. You’ll find yourself in Guardhouse 1 now, and you can use the Lever inside to open the Metal Gate up ahead. And you can also open those two chests nearby for some lovely loot. The second Chest is in the bottom right corner, in case you missed it.

Then, to cap off this East Forest section, you’ll need to fight the Guard Captain. He is a formidable foe who hits hard and has a Rudeling Grunt fighting alongside him.

tunic fast travel east forest

It’s best to take out the lone Rudeling and then turn your focus to the Guard Captain. He tends to work off a pattern of a swipe attack and then a lunge attack. So wait until he’s performed both, get a few hits in, and get your distance. Repeat this a few times, and they should go down.

You can then move to the next room, where you will find a Chest containing another Magic Potion.

You can explore the Lower Forest for some additional items, but you’ll now have all the essentials from the East Forest, so you can now head up the stairs past the Chest, up the Ladder, and you’ll be back in the East Bell Tower.

tunic fast travel east forest

From there, all that’s left to do is smack the Bell with your Sword, and Voila, you’ll have completed the initial section of Tunic. But our adventure is just beginning.

There you have it, a beginner guide that will get you moving in the right direction when taking on Tunic. Tunic is a challenging game that will test your exploration, puzzle-solving, and combat skills to their limit, unless you mess with the Accessibility settings.

But with the help of our guides, you should be able to make it through without too much stress. So I’ll see you in our next Tunic Guide, and as always, thanks for reading Indie Game Culture.

Screen Rant

Tunic: every instruction page location.

The instruction pages in Tunic are collectibles found in various locations, and assembling the full book is required to get the true ending.

Instruction pages are collectibles in  Tunic that teach the player the mechanics and objectives of the game as well as a few secrets that can be discovered after some thorough deciphering. The manual contains a cover and 55 pages, but each of the collectibles award players with two pages. There are a total of 28 instruction pages to collect in  Tunic , and finding all of them will reveal a variety of secrets and unlock the game's true ending.

Finding instruction pages is necessary from the beginning of  Tunic to understand how the game works, where to go, and what the main objective is. Some of the pages are easily spotted and can be collected as players progress naturally, but others are hidden along secret paths and need to be actively searched for. Instruction pages appear as glowing white objects on the ground and need to be interacted with to collect.

Related:  Where To Find The Blue Gem in Tunic

The instruction manual in  Tunic is assembled out of order, with some of the early pages of the booklet being inaccessible until special equipment is obtained.  Tunic includes some magic items that help players grapple or warp to new locations, and finding these items can be difficult. Many of the instruction pages are easily missed, so players will need to thoroughly explore every area while also deciphering the pages they have in order to assemble the full booklet.

Instruction Page Locations & How To Reach Them In Tunic

Many of the instruction pages reveal the mechanics and features of  Tunic , like how to upgrade stats , but some of them can be translated to detail the game's premise. Understanding the deeper story taking place in  Tunic requires identifying what letter each symbol corresponds to, then translating the manual text that's in the foreign language. Doing so can be a daunting task, but it extends the content of the game and gives players an interesting backstory. However,  before the manual can be translated, every page in the book must be located and collected.

  • Cover & Page 1 : In order to collect page one, players will need to open the door at the top of the snowy mountain using clues found on page 49 to identify the correct button input combination (up, left, down, left, up, left, down, left, up, right, up, right, up, left, up, right, down, right, up, left, up, left, up, right, up, left, down, left, up, right, up, up, left, up, right, down, right, down, right, up, right, down, left, down, right, up, right, right, down, right, up, right, down, right, up, right, right, down, left, down, left, down, right, down, right, down, left, left, down, right, down, left, down, right, up, right, down, right, up, right, right, down, down, left, up, right, up, left, down, left, up, left, up, left, up, right, right, up, left, up).
  • Pages 2 & 3 : From the initial spawn point, the fox can head north to the first  warp point in  Tunic and pray on the golden platform to get to the fast travel hub. The platform is disconnected from the rest, but pages two and three can be found there.
  • Pages 4 & 5 : Using the teleport dash ability gained by completing the Cathedral, the fox can reach pages four and five on a small platform in the Overworld south of the Dark Tomb entrance.
  • Pages 6 & 7 : In the Fortress of the Eastern Vault, pages six and seven can be found by going left after the first save point and praying at the pillar to drop it. The collectible is behind the pillar.
  • Pages 8 & 9 : Pages eight and nine are on a pedestal in the southeast portion of Overworld and require the teleport dash ability to reach.
  • Pages 10 & 11 : In the Overworld, there's a key that opens a door south of the first fox statue save point, and the collectible is immediately in front of the fox after going through the door.
  • Pages 12 & 13 : In the first room of the East Forest where the East Belltower in Tunic  is, there's a page at the top of the small set of stairs.
  • Pages 14 & 15 : Pages 14 and 15 are on the fast travel platform inside the East Forest which is just south of the second save point.
  • Pages 16 & 17 : In the Overworld, the fox can take the ladder near the Windmill Shop and find pages 16 and 17 on the golden platform. There are a few enemies to defeat in this area before collecting the instructions.
  • Pages 18 & 19 : Pages 18 and 19 are directly south of the ladder that leads to Under the Well.
  • Pages 20 & 21 : These pages are located at the top of the mountain on the stairs in front of the door.
  • Pages 22 & 23 : In the eastern part of the Overworld there's a large statue with an open mouth, and it requires the teleport dash ability to reach. Inside the statue, there's a collectible page and a shop.
  • Pages 24 & 25 : After opening the golden door to the Sealed Temple, the fox can take the path on the right of the platform where the three colored gems need to be placed. The page can be found after climbing the ladder.
  • Pages 26 & 27 : Near the fox statue save point in the West Garden, there's a thin walkway with a collectible at the end of it.
  • Page 28 & 29 : There's a platform northwest of the entrance to the East Forest with a collectible in the center.

  • Pages 34, & 35 : After reaching the fox statue save point in Under the Well, pages 34 and 35 can be found to the left of the entrance in the next room.
  • Pages 36 & 37 : This collectible can be found on the walkway above the main room of the Fortress of the Eastern Vault where enemies are gathered around a pillar.
  • Pages 38 & 39 : Pages 38 and 39, which reveal  Tunic 's Quarry and Swamp, can be collected by breaking the glass dome on the right side of the Great Library.
  • Pages 40 & 41 : These pages are in a glass dome on the left side of the Great Library.
  • Pages 42 & 43 : Using teleport dash, the fox can reach these pages by jumping to the pillar in the middle of a pool southwest of the Old House in the Overworld.
  • Pages 44 & 45 : Immediately north of the previous pages, there's a locked door that can be accessed using the button input code on page 43 (down, right, up, left, up, right). The collectible is in the room past the door.
  • Pages 46 & 47 : From the fast travel platform in the West Garden, the fox can use the teleport dash ability to jump across the pillars and reach the collectible.
  • Pages 48 & 49 : These pages can be collected by activating the golden pillar where Tunic 's magic staff was located in the Overworld. The button input combination can be found on page 44 (up, right, down, left, down, right, up, left).
  • Pages 50 & 51 : These pages are in a glass dome on the left side of the Great Library.
  • Pages 52 & 53 : Inside the Old House, the fox can head north, then follow the path to the right and use teleport dash to clear the gap. On the other side, there's a door that can be opened using the code on page 43, and the collectible is inside.
  • Pages 54 & 55 : These pages are awarded for finding 10 of the 20 Fairies in  Tunic .

Once all of the pages have been collected, players can fight The Heir to get the true ending. Otherwise, fighting The Heir will result in the Game Over achievement, and players will get the option to retry or start over in new game plus mode. To get every achievement, players will need to fight the final boss after finding all the gems in  Tunic with and without the full manual assembled, but the true ending can only be accessed after collecting every instruction page.

Can you fast travel in Tunic? Answered

Image of Justin Joy

One of the main aspects of Tunic is the exploration and discovery of its world. There are many places to discover, and some are not on the map when you find them. This might leave you wondering if there is fast travel in Tunic.

The answer is yes— you can fast travel in Tunic . This feature is not really explained or obvious, but you can fast travel in Tunic at the golden square platforms. To fast travel in Tunic, stand on the gold platform and hold the A button for a few seconds .

To fast travel in Tunic, simply stand on the gold platforms and hold the A button for several seconds. This will transport you to another world . In here, you will see several gold platforms. These are fast travel points, and you simply need to stand on them and press A.

The exception to this is the first gold platform you encounter after waking up on the beach. This will transport you to a world where a manual page is. This manual page will give you the table of contents page that shows what topics on are which page of your manual.

The Sealed Temple

This page of IGN's Tunic guide will cover what you need to do in the Sealed Temple after collecting all 3 keys, as well where you'll need to go next, which not may be so obvious.

With all three keys on hand, the only thing left to do is return to the Sealed Temple and place the keys in their respective slots. Once you do, you’ll see another short cutscene involving the fox spirit trapped inside the prism.

Once the cutscene is over, it may not be readily apparent where you need to go.

Go to the closest fast travel teleporter and travel to the Far Shore. From there, run over to the fast travel teleporter in the very center. If you’ve traveled to this particular place before, you’ll have seen a blue, floating sword that you really couldn’t do much with.

Tunic - Otherworld 1.JPG

Now that you’ve returned the keys to the Sealed Temple, instead of the blue sword, you’ll see the Heir, the fox spirit that was previously trapped, which can only mean one thing.

That’s right: get ready for a boss fight.

Boss Fight: The Heir

The good thing about this boss fight is that it's short, sweet and to the point.

Tunic - The Heir 1.JPG

You can try to get a hit or two in but the fact of the matter is, this is a boss fight you're supposed to lose so don't freak out when you inevitably meet your demise.

After the fight you'll wake up where the game began, except this time, not only will the day have turned to night but you'll also be in your ghost form, meaning you've died. As you roam the Overworld in your new form you'll see the ghosts of various foxes in several places. While you can approach them to talk with them, most of the text will be in the game's mysterious language with only a few words or phrases in a language you can understand.

If you've collected page 39 of the manual you'll know that there's an area out there you may have been able to reach but couldn't fully explore in your living form. But now that you've died and exist only as a spirit, it's time to head to the southeast corner of the Overworld and enter the Swamp .
