Do You Have U.S. ESTA VISA Travel Authorization? If You Have ESTA Application, Check if it is Still Valid!

When you travel to USA from UK, passport requirements are regulated by the US Visa Waiver Program and ESTA which is important to keep in mind when applying for travel authorization and planning your trip.

Do I need 6 months on my passport before expiry date to travel to USA?

Yes, when traveling to the USA you need at least 6 months of expiry date after the planned return date. However, this rule is different for citizens of some countries, for example, the UK. This will be covered in detail in the next chapter.

Passport Validity

Passport validity is one of the most important factors to keep in mind before traveling and even if many people forget about that, one of the most common questions regarding travel to USA is:

H ow long do you need on your passport to travel USA?

The answer is this!

When traveling to the USA, the general rule is to have a passport that is valid for at least six months after the planned time of return.

However, there are some countries, citizens of which can enjoy a bit more freedom regarding their passport expiry rules when traveling to the USA. For citizens of these countries, the passport validity must only cover the time of their intended stay in the States.

Countries who are subject to this rule are:

Algeria, Andorra, Antigua and Barbuda, Argentina, Australia, Austria, Bahamas, Bangladesh, Barbados, Belgium, Bermuda, Bolivia, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Botswana, Brazil, Bulgaria, Canada, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Cote d’Ivoire, Croatia, Cuba, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Dominica, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, Egypt, El Salvador, Eritrea, Estonia, Ethiopia, Fiji, Finland, France, Georgia, Germany, Greece, Grenada, Guatemala, Guinea, Guyana, Hong Kong, Hungary, Iceland, India, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Jamaica, Japan, Korea, Kuwait, Laos, Latvia, Lebanon, Liechtenstein, Luxembourg, Macau, Macedonia, Madagascar, Malaysia, Malta, Mauritius, Mexico, Monaco, Netherlands, New Zealand, Nicaragua, Nigeria, Norway, Oman, Pakistan, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, Philippines, Poland, Portugal, Qatar, Romania, Russia, San Marino, Senegal, Serbia and Montenegro, Singapore, Slovak Republic, Slovenia, South Africa, Spain, Sri Lanka, St. Kitts and Nevis, St. Lucia, St. Vincent and The Grenadines, Suriname, Sweden, Switzerland, Syria, Taiwan, Tanzania, Thailand, Togo, Trinidad and Tobago, Tunisia, Turkey, Tuvalu, United Arab Emirates, United Kingdom , Uruguay, Uzbekistan, Vatican, Venezuela, Zimbabwe.

Which countries require 6 months of passport validity?

All of the countries which are not included in this list and are not under the specific rules regarding their citizen passport expiry dates are regulated by the 6-month passport validity law. Which means you have to make sure which of the rules apply to you before further planning your trip to the USA !

Passport Validity when traveling with ESTA

If you are traveling under the US Visa Waiver program , the travel authorization you need to acquire is an ESTA instead of a Visa. So remember, that you also need to pay attention to the ESTA validity date and not just your passport.

If you are a citizen of one of the countries listed above, the validity date of your passport must be at least the same as the date of your planned return from the US. This means that these rules are also the general travel passport requirements for USA from UK.

Keep in mind that the validity of your passport also affects the validity of your ESTA . This authorization is no longer valid when your passport validity ends. If the passport is valid for more than two years after obtaining an ESTA , the authorization will be valid for two years.

If the country you are a citizen is not listed above, you are a subject to the rule of 6 months of passport validity after exiting the US.

Passport Validity when traveling with Visa

There are no Visa requirements for UK citizens, therefore these passport validity rules do not apply to the UK citizens.

Passport validity for travel to USA when traveling with a Visa usually requires the passport to be valid for at least six months after the planned date of return. However, if you are a citizen of one of the countries listed above, the rules are slightly different.

In this case, the passport validity requires the expiry date to at least meet the date of planned return.

how long passport valid for travel to usa

Usually, when traveling with a Visa, your passport expiry date could also influence your chances of obtaining a US Visa. Therefore make sure your passport is valid for a long enough period before applying for a Visa.

Also, keep in mind that your Visa is no longer valid after the passport expiry date. After that, you need to obtain a new Visa.

What to do if Passport expires soon

An upcoming passport expiry date is a common problem to those travelers who are affected by the list   of which countries require 6 months of passport validity. Simply because they are more likely to need to renew their passport before being able to apply for a Visa.

But this checkup for passport validity also applies to people who are citizens of countries which are regulated by the US Visa Waiver Program.

Therefore it is good to know how long does it take to get a passport in the UK or any other country for that matter. In most cases, it takes a couple of days, but it can also be done in a single day. However, there are additional fees that you will have to cover if you are renewing your passport in the last moment before traveling.

It is important to understand that there are no Visa requirements for UK citizens since they are a subject of the VWP and need to acquire and ESTA. This also changes the passport validity rules, but that does not mean it is possible to travel with an expired passport!

Do you need a biometric passport to travel to USA?

It is highly important to remember that all travelers who are traveling under the USA Visa Waiver Program need to obtain an electronic passport since the usual, machine-readable passports, will not be accepted.

Make sure you can travel before applying for travel authorization

Remember that some sort of passport expiry rules apply to everyone who wishes to travel to the USA. Even if you need to obtain an ESTA instead of a Visa, there are still some rules that affect you.

This is why you should make sure your passport has a long enough validity time even before applying for travel authorization. This way you can be sure to avoid any misunderstandings and unneeded problems during the authorization process.

You should also learn more about traveling with two passports , to avoid any problems if you indeed have two citizenships.

For more specific information on expiry dates and process of renewing your passport, you should contact your local authorities.

US Passport Validity: A Country-by-Country Guide

Navigating the world of international travel can be complex, especially trying to understand passport validity—for example, many individuals are unaware their passports must typically be valid well past their planned return date to be allowed entry into a foreign country.

This comprehensive guide to travel documents aims to simplify issues around US passport validity, making your international travel as seamless as possible.

How long is my US passport valid for?

Ordinarily, a US passport is valid for 10 years for adults and for five years for children under age 16.

Could I be denied entry abroad if my passport expires soon?

Yes. Your passport’s expiration date isn’t the only factor to consider when traveling internationally. Many countries require your passport to have a specific period of validity remaining. If your passport's expiration date does not meet those requirements, you may not be admitted into the country you plan to visit.

Since you cannot travel on an expired passport and it takes time to get a new passport, countries try to ensure visitors won't have any trouble getting back home should their planned departure be delayed. Many have adopted the six-month passport rule to avoid complications.

What is the six-month passport rule?

The 'Six-Month Rule' stipulates that your passport should have at least six months of validity remaining from the date of your entry or departure to or from the international destination. If your passport expiration date is sooner than six months from your date of arrival, you may not be admitted.

This rule isn't universal. Some countries require a three-month validity, and others may have different requirements. It is always advisable to check the specific requirements of your destination country.

The US Department of State's international travel data page is an excellent   resource  for travelers. You can look up the exact requirements of every foreign country on your dream destination list.

Which countries require passport validity of six months?

A valid passport with six months remaining until the expiration date is required for entry into many countries. Numerous countries in the Asia-Pacific and Middle East regions require a US passport to have at least six months of validity remaining before granting a visa or allowing entry.

Some countries requiring six months of passport validity include: mainland China, Mongolia, Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos, Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia, Burma, India, Nepal, Pakistan, Russia, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Qatar, the United Arab Emirates, Oman, Jordan, Israel, Egypt, and Turkey.

But it’s not universal. For example, Hong Kong and Macau have only a one-month validity requirement.

In some cases, airlines don't allow passengers holding passports with a validity period of under six months to board flights to access these destinations.

Since different rules apply in many countries and sometimes rules change, you should verify the individual country requirements via CIBTvisas’  Visa Quick Check  (or on the US Department of State website) as you plan your travel.

Which countries require three months of passport validity?

Several countries, including those within the Schengen Area, require your passport to be valid for three months beyond your intended departure date.

These countries include many popular European destinations: Austria, Belgium, Czech Republic, Croatia, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Italy, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, and Switzerland.

Which countries have other passport validity requirements?

Some countries, like Australia, the Bahamas, Bermuda, Canada, and Colombia, have unique passport validity requirements for US travelers. For example, Australia, the Bahamas, Bermuda, Canada, and Colombia only require your US passport to be valid at the time of entry.

FAQs on US passport validity

Why does my passport have to be valid for six months if i’m going abroad for less.

Countries set up the six-month passport rule because if your passport expires while abroad, you could have difficulties returning home until you secure a new passport, a valid visa extending your stay, or an emergency travel document. As a result, you might overstay the terms of your original visa and, depending on your individual economic circumstances, perhaps become a burden to the country. The six-month passport validity rule helps avoid these emergency situations.

Can you renew your passport before it expires?

Yes, US passport holders can renew their passports before the expiration date. For frequent travelers, it may be advisable to do so to avoid limiting your travel options, especially on last-minute trips. The US Department of State recommends renewing your passport nine months before it expires.

How long does it take to renew a passport right now?

The processing time for passport renewals varies depending on the type of passport applicationyou make.

● Routine service will take 10 to 13 weeks, plus an additional two to four weeks for shipping. You can pay extra for expedited mailing service to cut down that time. ● Expedited processing takes seven to nine weeks, plus the mailing time.  ● If you must travel within the next 14 days, you may be able to get your passport at a passport agency by making an appointment.

What documents do I need to renew my passport?

To renew your US passport book or passport card, you must fill out the passport application Form DS-82 : US Passport Renewal Application for Eligible Individuals and print it out on single-sided pages.

● To renew your passport, you must provide your Social Security number. If you don’t have a Social Security number, you must submit a statement, signed and dated, including the phrase: 'I declare under penalty of perjury that the following is true and correct: I have never been issued a Social Security Number by the Social Security Administration.” ● By checking the 'large book' box on the DS-82, you can request a passport book with additional pages free of charge, which might be helpful if you travel frequently. ● The form must be filled out completely and signed and dated. ● You must submit your most recent passport with your application. ● Your current passport must meet   all the requirements . ● If the name you currently use differs from the name on your most recent US passport, you must include a certified copy of the legal name change document. Examples include marriage certificates, divorce decrees, or court-ordered name change documents.  ● One photograph must be attached to the application. To avoid delays, be sure your photo meets the   photo requirements . ● The mandated government renewal fees can be paid via personal check or money order payable to 'US Department of State.'

What do I do if my passport expires abroad?

After June 30, 2022, US citizens can no longer use their expired passports to return to the United States. If your passport expires abroad, you must contact the nearest US embassy or consulate to apply for a new US passport.

Can I travel from Canada to the US with less than six months on my passport?

Please note that the six-month validity requirement does not apply to American travelers. They can enter the US or Canada up until the day their passport expires.

Are there any other exceptions to the six-month validity rule?

Yes, there are many exceptions. Sovereign nations decide which policies work best for their citizens. Specific countries may have bilateral agreements altering the six-month rule. For instance, Chile allows entry as long as your US passport is valid for the duration of your stay.

Keep your passport travel-ready

By understanding the policies affecting whether your US passport is considered valid for travel, you can better prepare to see more of the world. Remember to verify the specific requirements of your destination country before departure to avoid unwelcome surprises. Check the US State Department details on your country as you plan your trip and renew your passport in time for your travel dates when possible.

A Complete Guide to the Six-Month Passport-Validity Rule

Close-up of passport lying on European map

Most travelers know they need a passport to travel internationally, but few are aware that, in many instances, your passport must be valid longer than your stay. In fact, many countries require it to be valid for six months beyond your intended return date. If it expires before that, you may be denied boarding or entry upon arrival at your destination and have to go straight home. To be safe, verify that your passport is valid for at least six months after your intended return date — if the expiration date is uncomfortably close to the cutoff, make sure you renew it way ahead of time. Unfortunately, this is something airlines will rarely mention, even when you're booking, so consider yourself warned.

Below, we've done the heavy lifting and created a cheat sheet based on information from the US Department of State website to help you make sense of which countries require you to have a passport that lasts longer than your trip, whether it's one, three or six more months. Note that certain countries, marked with an asterisk, deviate from the standard six-month requirement. These lists are also only related to passport-validity dates — we're not getting into visa requirements, which vary depending on where you're going and where you're coming from.

Schengen Treaty Signers in Europe

Many European countries are signers of the Schengen Treaty and as a result, follow the 3+3 Rule, meaning your passport must be valid three months beyond your three-month entry visa, or, for a total of six months regardless of how long your initial stay is. Note that while some Schengen members only require passports to be valid three months beyond your intended stay, others assume you may stay the full 90 days of your visa validity and thus, the six-month time period.

Schengen Treaty signers include: Austria, Belgium, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Italy, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Slovak Republic, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden and Switzerland.

European countries like Sweden often follow the 3+3 Rule. Image by matsf/Getty.

The remaining countries listed below abide by the usual six months of passport validity unless otherwise noted.

Non-Schengen Europe, Asia and the Middle East

Note that while the UK and Ireland are both EU member states, they are not part of the Schengen arrangement and do not require an additional six-month validity period beyond your stay, though it is recommended.

Albania*, Bahrain, Bangladesh, Belarus*, Bhutan, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Brunei, Bulgaria, Cambodia, China, Croatia*, Hong Kong**, Indonesia, Iran, Iraq, Israel, Jordan, Kazakhstan*, Kuwait, Kyrgyzstan, Laos, Macau**, Malaysia, Mongolia, Myanmar, Nepal, New Caledonia, North Korea, Oman, Pakistan, Qatar, Russia, Saudi Arabia, Singapore , Sri Lanka, Tajikistan, Thailand, East Timor, Turkmenistan, Turkey, United Arab Emirates, Vietnam, West Bank/Gaza Strip and Yemen.

*Passport must be valid three months beyond scheduled departure date.

**Passport must be valid one month beyond the date of your intended stay.

Algeria, Angola, Botswana, Burundi, Cameroon, Central African Republic, Chad, Congo, Cote d'Ivoire, Djibouti, Equatorial Guinea, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Gabon, Kenya, Madagascar, Malawi, Mauritania, Mozambique, Namibia, Rwanda, São Tomé and Príncipe, Somalia, South Sudan, Sudan, Tanzania, Uganda and Zambia.

North America and the Caribbean

Antigua and Barbuda, Grenada, Guadeloupe, Haiti, Honduras, Martinique, St. Barthelemy, St. Kitts, St. Lucia, Trinidad and Tobago, and Panama*.

*Passport must be valid three months beyond arrival .

South America

Bolivia, Ecuador, Guyana, Suriname and Venezuela.

South Pacific

French Polynesia, Kiribati, Marshall Islands, Micronesia, New Zealand*, Palau, Papua New Guinea, Tonga, Tuvalu and Vanuatu.

*Passport must be valid one month beyond planned departure .

Bottom Line

Some countries have a slight distinction in that they may require validity to be either six months from the date of entry or six months from date of intended departure . For simplicity, we've taken the conservative approach and assumed that for any country with a six-month rule, like most of the ones above, you should make sure your passport is valid six months past the date of intended departure just in case.

If the country you're traveling to isn't listed above, note that it likely doesn't require anything other than your passport simply being valid throughout your intended stay — double-check with the US State Department website and if you're cutting it close, consider renewing it well in advance to avoid any issues during your trip. For renewal and other passport and visa services, TPG recommends using Allied Passport.

Six Months Passport Validity Rule

Six Months Passport Rule

What is the six-month passport validity rule? When traveling overseas, most people know that a valid United States passport is required to enter an international destination. But, what is unknown to the traveler is that some countries would need to have enough six-month validity on their passport to travel to the country known as the six-month validity passport rule for visitors .  Therefore, if your passport expires within the next six months or, in some cases, three months, some countries will refuse to give you entry into the country.

Hence, this rule is in place so that if the unexpected visitor needs to stay for up to six months, his/her passport would be valid to leave the country.

TABLE OF CONTENTS

What is the Six Month Passport Validity Rule?

The 6 Month Validity Rule is imposed by foreign countries and not by the United States of America. It means that your passport should be valid for more than six months before you can enter a foreign country that imposes the six-month rule. This rule is imposed by some of the countries we have listed below. This rule is prevalent in the Asian continent, such as China and Hong Kong.

Which Countries Require Six Months on Passport?

When visiting another country, remember that the six-month rule is enforced by countries outside the US, not by the US. Hence, it’s important to know the rules when entering or leaving to avoid any issues.

Countries That Require a 3-Month Passport Rule?

Which countries need you to have a passport that is valid for three months or more? As a traveler, it’s important to know the requirements for international travel. One important factor to consider is the validity of your passport. While most countries require a passport to be valid for at least six months, there are some that have a 3 months passport rule.

Other Countries with Passport Validity Requirements

U.s. citizens entering u.s. with a passport expiring in 6 months.

The six-month validity requirement does NOT apply to an American citizen using a U.S. passport to enter the United States or Canada. He/she may do so up until the date of expiration of the passport.

Even though many countries implemented the six-month validity rule, other restrictions are enforced to enter these countries. Some require a passport to have one clean page per stamp or at least one available sheet. Also, a visa is a requirement to enter some countries. Be aware of this significant document because without it, when it is required, you will not be allowed to board your flight or enter the country you plan to visit.

Having a passport with plenty of validity before travel is best and wise. Also, it is necessary to know some laws of the country you plan to visit to avoid any mishaps or know what to do when you are there.

The Essential Guide to U.S. Passport Cards: How to Apply and FAQs

Example of a U.S. Passport card

For U.S. citizens looking to travel internationally by land or by sea, a U.S. passport card is a great option to consider.

The US passport card is smaller, cheaper, and more convenient than a passport book. That said, it is not for everyone. It only works for entry into certain countries via sea or land crossings.

These countries include:

  • Caribbean countries

Please note that the Passport Card cannot be used for international air travel.

So, if you are planning to visit one of these destinations and do not have a valid U.S. passport already, a passport card can be a better option than a standard passport book.

Both a passport card and passport book can serve as identification that border agents can accept as proof of your American citizenship status.

So, who is it for? How do you get one? What does the card look like?

We answer these and other frequently asked questions below so you can make the best decision for your travel needs.

What is a passport card?

A passport card works the same way as the book version. It is issued by the Department of State and proves both your United States citizenship and your identity. It has a unique passport card number just like a standard book-style passport does. It features the same style photo as a traditional passport book. The cards also have expiration dates 10 years after issuance (or 5 years for minors) just like the books do.

The card is a valid passport, but it is similar in size to a credit card or driver's license. It has a radio frequency identification (RFID) chip that stores your identifying details. When a customs official scans your card, the RFID chip transmits this information.

The Differences Between a Passport Book and a Passport Card

Both passport cards and passport books serve the same purpose: proving your U.S. citizenship and identity.

All American citizens are required to present a valid passport to exit and re-enter the United States. A passport is used for international travel when entering, exiting, and traveling between foreign countries.

While there are similarities between the two, the table below shows the differences between a passport card and a passport book.

table of differences between us passport card and us passport book

The main differences are:

  • Size - The passport card is about the same size as a credit or debit card. Its smaller size makes it more convenient to carry than the larger book.
  • Cost - It is cheaper to get passport cards than passport books. Choosing a card can be a good way to save money.
  • No stamps - Unlike a traditional passport book, there is no place on the card for the colorful immigration stamps many countries issue when you go through customs.

However, a passport book is valid for all types of travel to any destination. It can be used for international air travel, land border crossings, and at international sea ports of entry.

How to Apply for a Passport Card

Man filling out a passport application at a table

You apply for both a passport card and passport book using the same application form (you are not required to get both).

The process looks differently depending on whether or not you already have a valid passport book.

  • If you do not already have a valid passport book, Follow this step-by-step guide to getting a new passport .
  • If you do already have a valid passport book, you follow this step-by-step guide for applying for a passport renewal .

In either scenario, you can still use the help of a registered passport expediter to simplify and speed up the application timeline for your passport card.

Important Note: However you apply, be sure to check the appropriate box for a passport card on the DS-11 application form (for those applying as first-time applicants) or the DS-82 form if you are renewing an existing card or book by mail.

Passport Card Processing Times

There is no significant difference in processing time for a passport card versus a passport book.

Both can be expedited . However, some passport agencies do not expedite passport cards.

The Purpose of a U.S. Passport Card

Any American citizen can apply for a passport card. But, it may not be the ideal choice for everyone with international travel plans.

The purpose of the card is to make it easier for Americans who have to cross land or sea borders often. For example, many people living in border communities must cross a border frequently for work, shopping, or leisure. They must show a proper credential each time they cross. A plastic card is sturdier and easier to carry than a paper passport book.

Know that citizens still need a passport book to travel outside of North America or fly abroad. There is a good reason for this. Passport books are the international gold standard for travel ID. As such, the card was never meant to replace the book. The card is simply a convenient tool more suitable for specific use cases.

The Pros and Cons of Passport Cards

  • Convenience - It's the same size as a credit card, so it fits conveniently in your wallet.
  • Cost - Both the initial cost and renewal costs are lower than a passport book.
  • Travel - It can be used for land or sea travel to some of the most popular destinations for Americans traveling abroad: Canada, Mexico, Bermuda, and the Caribbean.
  • Identification - It can serve as an identity proof for children and non-drivers.
  • Air Travel - You cannot use it for international air travel.
  • Limited Use - It cannot be used to acquire travel visas or visit countries beyond those listed above.
  • Limited Recognition - Not all countries recognize the passport card as an identifying document, as it is a relatively new form of identification.

Passport Card FAQs

Should you choose a passport card or a passport book.

Simply put, applying for a passport card only makes sense if you meet the following criteria:

  • You do not plan to leave or enter the United States by air.
  • You only plan to travel to Bermuda, Canada, Mexico, and/or the Caribbean (and no other countries).
  • Both of the above apply to your anticipated plans for the next 10 years.

The card is a convenient option for those who live near U.S. borders and frequently use land border crossings for work or pleasure. In these cases, being able to keep a durable international travel credential in your wallet or purse - just as you would your license or state-issued ID - makes sense. If you plan on using a card often enough that it must always be on your person, it is worth considering.

For everyone else, the alternative is the traditional U.S. passport book. The book version comes in both a standard, 24-page version and a bigger, 52-page version for those who travel a lot.

Where can a U.S. citizen apply for a passport card?

If you are applying for a passport for the first time, you can do so at one of the 8,400 Passport Application Acceptance Facilities across the country. Most facilities require an appointment and many have limited spots available.

What documents will I need in order to apply for a passport card?

The passport card is a valid passport that is proof of the identity of the bearer. As such, the passport book and passport card follow the same application rules.

Applicants must provide documents that attest to their U.S. citizenship. The most common examples of acceptable documentation include:

A completed application and updated passport photo are also required.

If you already have a traditional passport book and you are eligible to submit Form DS-82, you may apply for a passport card as a Renewal by Mail - even if it is your first passport card!

How much does a passport card cost?

The first card for an adult costs $65, and $50 for any minor under the age of 16. This includes the $35 execution fee. These fees can be paid by money order or check. Cash and credit card payments are not accepted.

Adults who received their most recently issued passport when they were age 16 or older can apply for the card at a cost of $30, as long as their passport is still valid or has expired no more than 5 years ago.

How long does it take to receive your passport card?

This process can take from weeks to months, depending on the demand at the time that you apply.

Using first class mail or similarly fast, reliable shipping options can help reduce your turnaround time by several days.

Can a passport card be renewed?

Yes. You can renew a passport card by following the same steps you would follow to renew a passport book .

Similarly, you also have the ability to rush your passport card renewal in the same ways that you would expedite a passport book renewal.

How can a passport card application be expedited?

You can request expedited passport service when you submit the application. There is an extra fee of $60 for this service. Expedited processing can take up to 2 to 3 weeks by mail. This can save you several weeks compared to the standard wait time, but it is still a long wait for those who need to travel soon.

Applicants who need to get one quickly, but are unable to visit a regional passport agency in person, can authorize a registered expediter to submit the passport application for them. Be sure to check out our directory of the top passport expeditors for our most up-to-date recommendations.

Can a valid passport card be used as a Real ID?

Update on Passport Processing Times

Office of the Spokesperson

March 24, 2023

On March 24, the Department of State updated the processing times for U.S. passport applications. Routine processing will take 10-13 weeks and expedited processing, which costs an additional $60, will take 7-9 weeks.  These new processing times only apply to new applications submitted on or after March 24.  Processing time begins the day we receive an application and do not include mailing time.

Processing times are cyclical and rise and fall based on seasonal demand.  However, the volume of applications we have received during periods this year has outpaced records set by last year’s volume by more than 30 percent.

By adjusting our processing times, we are giving U.S. citizens more precise information about how long it may take them to receive a new passport.  We continue to urge U.S. citizens to check their passport expiration date and renew now if they are planning international travel this year.  Visit  travel.state.gov/passport  to plan your 2023 travel with the latest passport guidance and processing tips in mind.  We encourage all U.S. citizens traveling overseas to enroll in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program so they can receive important messages about their destinations directly, including timely Alerts and updates to Travel Advisories, and to enable us to assist in an emergency.

Here's How Long People Are Waiting For Passports On Average In 2024

A re you feeling the itch to travel and explore the world in 2024? We have some fantastic news for you! If you've been worried about the time it takes to get your U.S. passport, you can now breathe a sigh of relief. In December 2023, the U.S. Department of State announced a return to pre-pandemic standards, fulfilling the benchmarks the agency set in March 2020. With improved efficiency, the passport application process is now quicker and smoother, allowing you to plan your international vacation without the anxiety of a prolonged passport wait."We have worked hard to modernize and improve the service we provide to the American people," the office of the spokesperson said in the Department of State press release . "We will continue to do so in 2024."They noted that the number of Americans holding passports has increased significantly over the years, from 5% in 1990 to 48% today. More than 160 million valid U.S. passports are in circulation, which is almost twice as many as 2007. That demand doesn't seem to be slowing down, as the Department of State recently issued the highest number of passports ever recorded: over 24 million between October 2022 and September 2023. Despite the challenge, the Department is committed to updating their services to make the process better and faster.

Passport Timelines And Expedited Services

According to the U.S. Department of State press release, regular passport processing times for 2024 will take six to eight weeks. This means that whether you're applying for a new passport or renewing an existing one, you should expect your travel documents to be processed within this time frame. If you need your passport urgently, you can use expedited services for an additional fee of $60, and your passport will be processed within two to three weeks, ensuring you receive your travel documents faster. Keep in mind that there are also options for Life-or-Death Emergency and Urgent Travel services, but you'll need to make an appointment, and there are restrictions for these services .

It's essential to keep in mind that the processing time for your application does not include the time it takes for you to receive your passport in the mail. Also, the Department of State notes that even if you reside at the same address as other applicants who applied at the same time, your passport may be ready at a different time. So, when planning international travel, you should take all of these factors into account to ensure that you have your passport when you need it.

Simplifying Your Passport Application

To make sure your passport application process goes smoothly, you need to take a few simple steps. First, keep track of the expiration date and renew your passport well in advance to avoid any last-minute issues. You can apply for renewal either online or in person, depending on your preference and urgency. Double-check your application for completeness to avoid delays due to missing or incorrect information. You can keep track of your application status online at the Department of State website  to stay informed about its progress and expected delivery date.

If you're planning to travel internationally, it's also a good idea to enroll in the Department of State's Smart Traveler Enrollment Program . This program can help you stay informed and receive important messages, including travel advisories and alerts. By signing up for STEP, you will get destination-specific information that can help you have a safer and more informed travel experience. The program establishes a direct line of communication between travelers and the U.S. embassy or consulate in their destination country.

Q: Can I travel to Puerto Rico with valid i20 but expired F1 visa, India passport? I do not have a US State ID.

A: Traveling to Puerto Rico, which is a U.S. territory, generally follows the same rules as traveling between states within the United States for international students. Since you have a valid I-20 and an Indian passport, you should be aware that the I-20 is primarily used within the United States to demonstrate your legal student status. However, if your F1 visa has expired, it usually does not affect your stay within the U.S. or its territories like Puerto Rico, as long as you maintain your student status and your I-20 remains valid. But, you cannot re-enter the mainland U.S. from any foreign country, including Puerto Rico, without a valid F1 visa. Before planning your travel, it is highly recommended to consult with your school's international student office and review the latest U.S. government travel regulations. They can provide up-to-date advice and ensure that your documents are in order for traveling and returning to your school without issues. Also, carrying proof of your student status and reason for travel can help smoothen the process.
