9 legendary bands who are playing farewell tours in 2023

This year will be your last chance to see Kiss, the Eagles, Foreigner ever play live

Foreigner’s Mick Jones, Kiss’ Gene Simmons and the Eagles’ Don Henley playing live

All good things come to an end – just ask Elton John , who wrapped up his long and illustrious career as a touring artist in July 2023, playing his last-ever gig in Stockholm, Sweden. He’s not the only musician stepping back from the road this year – a host of fellow rock icons have announced their retirement. There are two caveats: the is that some are only retiring from touring, rather than ceasing to exist as a band, while the second is that musicians often do change their minds (we’re looking at you, Mötley Crüe, with your so-called ‘Cessation Of Touring’ contract ). But here are nine bands who are definitely saying goodbye in 2023, so make sure you get your tickets before they disappear from the stage for good.

Metal Hammer line break

Announced way back in 2019, Kiss ’ End Of The Road tour is finally reaching, well, the end of the road. Granted, they’ve already said they were retiring from touring once before – in 2000 the original line-up embarked on the seemingly definitive The Farewell Tour – but this time it’s for real. “At some point, you’ve got to have some dignity and pride and quit while the gettin’s good,” Gene Simmons recently told Classic Rock . The tour, and their career as a live band wraps up, appropriately enough, with two hometown shows at New York’s Madison Square Garden on December 1 and 2, 2023.

The country rock superstars’ original and very acrimonious break-up in 1980 seemed pretty definitive, only for them to reconvene 14 years later with the winkingly-titled Hell Freezes Over live album. Since then the Eagles have endured lawsuits from aggrieved former members and the death of founder and guitarist Glenn Frey in 2016. But now they’ve decided enough is enough and are officially wrapping up their final tour this Fall, with a show in Saint Paul, Minnesota, because that’s where every band so significantly tied up with the mythology of California should take their final bow.

Dead & Company

This one’s done and dusted. On July 16, 2023, the most successful of the Grateful Dead offshoots played their third and allegedly final show in their hometown of San Francisco. The three-night stand drew 120,000 rapturous Deadheads – perhaps even a few still riding out the brown acid from Woodstock. Significantly diminishing the air of finality around the final show, guitarist (and non-canon Grateful Dead member) John Mayer tweeted that Dead & Company “is still a band — we just don’t know what the next show will be.”

A slight fudge, this one, given that Aerosmith ’s Peace Out tour finishes in January 2024, but what’s a month between friends? Still, after 50-odd years of drugs, bust-ups, rehab and killer grade rock’n’roll, the Bad Boys From Boston are finally hanging up their scarves with a gig in Montreal. ‘What about their hometown?’ you ask. New Year’s Eve, thank you very much. The only downside is that original drummer Joey Kramer won’t be taking his bows with them - he’s absent from the tour.

Sometime in the late 70s or early 80s, a silent, high-level agreement was seemingly reached that compelled every radio station on the planet to play at least one Foreigner song per hour. It’s carried the AOR godfathers through to today, even if guitarist Mick Jones is the only remaining original member – and he rarely appears with them live these days due to health issues. But the time has finally come to wind everything the grandly-named Historic Final Tour, which ends in Holmdel, New Jersey. Will original singer Lou Gramm join them? We can but hope.

Kenny Loggins

In March, the 75-year-old Loggins announced his bluntly titled This Is It farewell tour, though he assuaged weeping yacht rock fans everywhere by adding that he was only done with “major touring” rather than hanging up his beard trimmer for good. The tour winds up in Santa Barbara in November, though given his pedigree as both a member of Loggins & Messina and as a solo artist, he’s got a hell of a set list to draw on. “I’ll be playing songs that I feel sum up the emotional story of my music. This will include 90 percent of the hits and 10 or so percent of the deeper cuts.”

Parliament/Funkadelic

George Clinton and his multi-headed P-Funk collective revolutionised both funk and rock in the 70s, and he hasn’t stopped since. Until now, that is - P-Funk’s Just For The Funk Of It! Final Tour?!? is set to end in December in San Antonio. The 82-year-old announced back in 2018 that he had played his final show with P-Funk, so he’s come out retirement to retire. And the question marks in the tour’s name kind of leave the door open should he wish to don the star-shaped sunglasses and Bacofoil cape one more time in the future.

Most bands wait until they’re at least in their 70s before they bid adieu, but Candlebox frontman Kevin Martin is a mere stripling at 54. Still, he’s decided to call time on the band he co-founded in Seattle in the early 1990s with a farewell tour that will mark both the 30th anniversary of their self-titled debut album and the release of this year’s aptly-titled swansong LP The Long Goodbye (which also gives its name to this tour). “My music career had become so encompassing of my time… that I realized that I had not given my family what they actually needed from me, which was me,” he recently told DJ Eddie Trunk.

The Georgia new wave icons actually called in quits with a farewell tour in August 2022, but it seems that you can’t keep a good band down and they’re back for one last set of dates in the shape of a Vegas residency, which runs through to September and fill be followed by one (allegedly) honest-to-god last show in Huntington Beach, California in November.

Joe Daly

Hailing from San Diego, California, Joe Daly is an award-winning music journalist with over thirty years experience. 7 Bands Bidding Farewell on Tour in 2023

by Tina Benitez-Eves July 10, 2023, 11:52 am 1 Comment

Just as Elton John played his final concert on Saturday (July 8) in Stockholm, Sweden, a number of other artists are following suit and saying goodbye to their touring days in 2023. Earlier in 2023, Ted Nugent revealed that he wasn’t done making music, but it was “ Adios Mofo ” when it came to touring. He is set to go on the road one last time this year.

Videos by American Songwriter

On July 16, 2023, Dead & Company , formed in 2015 with John Mayer and Grateful Dead guitarist and vocalist Bob Weir, and drummers Mickey Hart and Bill Kreutzmann, are playing their final show together (sans Kreutzmann). The group will take its final bow where it all began, in the Grateful Dead’s hometown of San Francisco, California.

For some acts, the farewell tour has been endless. Devo has been advertising their shows as The Farewell Tour, Celebrating 50 Years for several years now, while George Clinton and Parliament-Funkadelic have also been on their unending Funk of It! Final Tour?!? for a few years with no end in sight.

In 2020, David Coverdale was forced to postpone his farewell tour with Whitesnake due to the pandemic. He also canceled several European shows and a North American tour with the  Scorpions in 2022 following treatment for an upper respiratory infection and other health issues. Coverdale said that the band’s farewell tour is unlikely to happen in 2023. “I’m working now on a torn rotator cuff,” said Coverdale . “So literally, this year, I gave my fantastic band the year off.”

With some farewells still in limbo, others appear to be full steam ahead. Here’s a look at seven bands bidding their adieus in 2023.

After more than 50 years, the  Eagles  will close the chapter on their touring days with their The Long Goodbye Final Tour. The tour will kick off in the fall of 2023, and dates are expected to run through 2025. The final tour is still in its planning stages, according to the band, with more dates possibly added on at a later date.

“The Eagles have had a miraculous 52-year odyssey, performing for people all over the globe, keeping the music alive in the face of tragic losses, upheavals, and setbacks of many kinds,” said the band in a statement on their 12-date tour, which will feature  Steely Dan . “We know how fortunate we are, and we are truly grateful. Our long-run has lasted far longer than any of us ever dreamed. But, everything has its time, and the time has come for us to close the circle.”

2. Foreigner

Foreigner will close their touring days with their The Historic Farewell Tour , featuring special guest Loverboy. Throughout their final tour, the band will invite choirs to open the shows with an a cappella performance of classic rock songs.

“The time has come,” said singer Kelly Hansen in a statement. “We have more or less lived our lives on the road for almost eighteen years. We have always strived to give you our best and we intend to finish this the same way. Foreigner has a brilliant and increasingly demanding catalogue of songs to sing and I refuse to give them less than they deserve.”

Mr. Big reunited, to say a proper goodbye in 2023. For each show during their last tour, the band will perform their 1991 album, Lean into It — including their sing-along ballad hit “To Be With You” — in its entirety.

Originally comprised of vocalist Eric Martin, guitarist Paul Gilbert, bassist Billy Sheehan, and drummer Pat Torpey, the band first split in 2002. The group later reunited in 2008 and released What If… in 2010, followed by The Stories We Could Tell i n 2014, and Defying Gravity in 2017. Torpey died in 2018 from complications with Parkinson’s disease. Nick D’Virgilio of Spock’s Beard will fill in for the late drummer on the band’s final tour.

4. Candlebox

Candlebox vocalist Kevin Martin said that he plans to retire after the 30th anniversary of the band’s eponymous 1993 debut album. For their final tour, Candlebox is taking 3 Doors Down along for the ride on their The Long Goodbye Tour.

The band’s tour will feature a setlist spanning the band’s eight albums, and their 30-year career. The band is releasing their final album together, The Long Goodbye , on August 25. Later this year, the band is also set to release a documentary, Far Behind: The Candlebox Story. In 2022, the band also released their documentary,  Far Behind: The Candlebox Story.

5. The B-52s

After more than 45 years of touring together, The B-52s have extended their farewell trek with a five-night residency at The Venetian in Las Vegas before their presumed final show at the Darker Waves festival in Huntington Beach, California on November 18. Joining The B-52s’ for their final hurrahs on stage are guests The Tubes and KC & the Sunshine Band.

“Who knew what started as a way to have some fun and play music for our friends at house parties in Athens in 1977 would evolve into over 45 years of making music and touring the world,” said The B-52s’ Kate Pierson in a statement. “It’s been cosmic.”

The B-52s Tickets HERE .

6. Aerosmith

After more than five decades together, Aerosmith revealed their final tour will kick off in 2023. The band’s Peace Out Tour is set to run from September 2023 to January 2024 with special guests The Black Crowes.

Formed in 1970, the band released 15 albums together, including their most recent,  Music From Another Dimension! , in 2012. For this tour, founding drummer Joey Kramer, who recently took a temporary leave from the band, will also sit out this final run of dates. John Douglas will fill in for Kramer.

Aerosmith Tickets HERE .

After more than five decades of performing together, KISS recently revealed the final dates of their End of the Road Farewell Tour . The trek will conclude with two shows in their hometown of New York City at Madison Square Garden on December 1 and 2.

The band’s final two shows are taking place nearly 51 years to the day KISS played their very first show together on January 30, 1973, at the Popcorn Club in Queens, New York.

“It’s happy and sad because things come to an end,” Gene Simmons recently told American Songwriter. “Your life and my life, even the planet we’re on at some point is just going to stop and maybe that’s OK.”

Foreigner Kicks Off Farewell Tour: Set List and Interview

Foreigner kicked off their farewell tour  Thursday night with a hit-packed, 13-song set at Atlanta's Ameris Bank Amphitheatre.

"It was fabulous, a sold-out crowd in Atlanta for our first night - it couldn't have gone better," bassist Jeff Pilson tells UCR. "The show went off without a hitch. We had done a couple of days of production rehearsal, so everything was extremely smooth. The audience was fabulous. You could really kind of feel the emotions of people knowing that this is the beginning of our farewell tour."

As the result of a recent back injury, Pilson performed the show while seated on a stool, but that change ended up offering him a new perspective. "I got a bird's eye view of everything that I wouldn't ordinarily get," he says. "I think the beginning of the tour sort of put everybody in an emotional state that was really cool. We really connected with the crowd. I think people felt it last night, it was palpable."

Favorite Moments

When pressed to pick a favorite moment from the show, Pilson instead offers a wider selection. "When we get to that first chorus [of 'Feels Like the First Time'] and it just explodes, and the whole audience is right there," he says. "During 'Urgent' we got Michael Bluestein's keytar solo in there now, which is so fun and exciting. On 'Juke Box Hero' we do all this jamming, and then of course the feeling that you get when you play 'I Want to Know What Love Is,' when absolutely everybody in the audience connects and sings and you get that feeling right away. And that's when you say to yourself, 'I got a damn good job.'"

Watch Foreigner Perform 'Urgent' in 2023 (Keytar Solo at 4:44)

He's also proud of the massive 84-page tour book the band put together to commemorate the final tour. "It's absolutely incredible," he notes. "It's got interviews with all sorts of old members and new members - most all of them actually. Foreigner to Launch Historic Farewell Tour In 2023 — 'Very Difficult Decision,' Says Kelly Hansen

"I see other musicians sometimes that I go, 'Wow, that was disappointing,' and I don't want to be someone that other people say that about," frontman Kelly Hansen told Billboard of aging acts

Ryan Parker is the former Senior News Editor, Weekends for PEOPLE. He left PEOPLE in 2023.

The iconic rockers of Foreigner announced on Monday that their touring days are almost over — but not before their Historic Farewell Tour, which kicks off next summer in Georgia.

The "Feels Like the First Time" band, formed in 1976 in New York City by British guitarist Mick Jones, 77, will perform 32 North American concerts from July 6 in Alpharetta, GA through Sept. 3 in Holmdel, N.J., according to Billboard , which noted the band would have more dates, both domestic and overseas, through the end of 2024.

"Foreigner is a completely revitalized band with a whole new energy that has won the hearts of our fans all over the world, and I want to go out while the band is still at the top of its game," Jones told Billboard . "I had the idea that was to become Foreigner back in 1974, and I was 30 years old at the time. By the end of our farewell tour, over 50 years will have passed, and that's a long time to be on the road."

The "Cold as Ice" hit-makers confirmed the news on Instagram , sharing a picture of the Billboard story with the caption, "Have you heard?"

The end of touring for the band had been a topic of conversation for some time, mostly revolving around the topic of maintaining the desired caliber of the band's performance, Foreigner's frontman, Kelly Hansen, 61, explained to Billboard .

"It's a very difficult decision to come to," he said. "This catalog of songs, it's extremely challenging for a rock tenor vocalist like myself to sing. I never would have thought in a million years I'd be singing these songs in the keys at this age, and I don't know how much longer I can do that at the level I need do. You can drop keys and do this and do that, but I'm more of an old-school person. If I'm not doing it for real, then I shouldn't be doing it."

Hansen added, "We're at an era in life where a lot of bands from the '70s are right on the ragged edge of still being able to do shows. I see other musicians sometimes that I go, 'Wow, that was disappointing,' and I don't want to be someone that other people say that about. I want to do this band the way it's supposed to be, and when it's not like that, I don't want to be doing it."

Teasing possible new music on the horizon to Billboard , the iconic group has released nine studio albums, five of which went multi-platinum since their 1977 self-titled debut. The group still has a number of 2022 concerts scheduled and more in the spring, all occurring prior to the farewell launch.

Tickets for The Historic Farewell Tour go on sale Friday via livenation.com . More information and updates will be posted to foreigneronline.com .

The eagles announce “the long goodbye” – the band’s final tour.

"The Eagles have had a miraculous 52-year odyssey, performing for people all over the globe; keeping the music alive in the face of tragic losses, upheavals and setbacks of many kinds. Credit and thanks go to our longtime management team, our dedicated road crew, and our exceptional backup musicians for providing skilled and steadfast support, throughout these many years. We know how fortunate we are, and we are truly grateful. Our long run has lasted far longer than any of us ever dreamed. But, everything has its time, and the time has come for us to close the circle. The official farewell tour is currently in the planning stages. We want to give all our fans a chance to see us on this final round.  So, scheduling information will be released as dates are set. The difficulties of booking venues for multiple nights may require us to return to certain cities, depending on demand.  But, we hope to see as many of you as we can, before we finish up. Most importantly, we thank you from the bottom of our hearts for embracing this band and its music. At the end of the day, you are the reason we have been able to carry on for over five decades. This is our swan song, but the music goes on and on.”

With love and gratitude, The Eagles

After more than 50 years of touring, and consistently selling out arenas and stadiums worldwide, the Eagles will embark on their final tour, “The Long Goodbye”.

Presale tickets and VIP packages will be available starting Wednesday, July 12 for all announced shows. The general on-sale will start Friday, July 14 at 10:00 AM local time.

Thanks for contacting us. We've received your submission.

KISS rocks out onstage in their makeup.

We all live with regrets.

For some of us, not seeing your favorite musicians live in concert can be pretty painful.

Speaking from experience, missing Elton John on the North American leg of his 2022 ‘Goodbye Yellow Brick Road Tour’ hurt us pretty badly.

It’s the ultimate kind of FOMO — we’ll never get another chance to hear “Rocket Man” live IRL and we just have to accept that.

To make up for it, we’ve gone ahead and done you a solid.

Our team combed through all the biggest tours taking place in 2023 and compiled a list of all the biggest stars who are hanging it up for good after their respective tours.

We just want to ensure that you don’t miss any of your favorite acts who are calling it quits after their upcoming runs.

We’re talking Dead and Company , KISS , Gladys Knight and many, many more.

That’s right; there’s no more Gene Simmons in KISS makeup after this year.

Plan accordingly.

Now, without further ado, we present to you the 13 biggest farewell tours in 2023 you won’t want to miss — because they’re not coming back.

Huge concert tours in 2023

ABOUT JOURNEY

Since the group's formation in 1973, JOURNEY has earned 19 top 40 singles, 25 gold and platinum albums, and has sold over 100 million albums globally. Their "Greatest Hits" album is certified 15 times-platinum, making JOURNEY one of the few bands to ever have been diamond-certified, and their song "Don't Stop Believin'" has been streamed over one billion times alone.

JOURNEY was inducted into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame in 2017, and 2018's co-headlining tour with DEF LEPPARD was the band's most successful tour to date, landing them in the Top 10 year-end touring chart with more than 1 million tickets sold, and earning them the prestigious Billboard "Legends Of Live" touring award. March 2019 saw the release of "Escape & Frontiers Live In Japan", a live DVD/CD set from their concert at the Budokan in Tokyo featuring the band's first-ever performances of the albums "Escape" and "Frontiers" in their entirety. JOURNEY has also received a star on the Hollywood Walk Of Fame and were inducted into the Hollywood Bowl Hall Of Fame. Additionally, the band is the subject of the award-winning documentary "Don't Stop Believin': Everyman's Journey" about the band's resurgence upon adding Arnel Pineda as lead singer after JOURNEY Founder, Neal Schon discovered the Philippines native on YouTube.

The members of TOTO are celebrating an accomplishment few bands have achieved in the modern era. Cumulative streams of the ensemble’s repertoire

now exceed 3 billion plays. Amongst the most listened to recordings, “Africa” accounts for over one billion streams at Spotify alone. This year the song was recertified by the RIAA 8X Platinum.

Over the past decade, the band has had a major renaissance in popularity like few bands at this point in their career. The audience is truly multi-generational, becoming younger with each passing year. Joining Steve Lukather and Joseph Williams are band members bassist John Pierce (Huey Lewis and The News), drummer Robert “Sput” Searight (Ghost-Note, Founding member Snarky Puppy, Snoop Dogg), keyboardist Dominique “Xavier” Taplin (Prince, Ghost-Note), multi-instrumentalist / vocalist Warren Ham (Ringo Starr) and keyboardist / background vocalist Steve Maggiora,. This line-up marks the fifteenth incarnation of Toto in consideration of band members or sidemen who joined or exited. Individually and collectively, few have had a larger imprint on pop culture than the members of TOTO. The family tree can be heard on an astonishing 5000 albums that together amass a sales history of a half a billion albums. Amongst these recordings, NARAS applauded the performances with hundreds of Grammy nominations.

With now 45+ years together and literally thousands of credits, including the biggest selling album of all time: Michael Jackson’s Thriller, and accolades to their names, TOTO remains one of the top selling touring and recording acts in the world. They are the benchmark by which many artists base their sound and production, and they continue to transcend the standards set by the entire music community, being simply synonymous with musical credibility. They are pop culture and are one of the few 70’s bands that have endured the changing trends and styles continuing to remain relevant.

Jeff Lynne’s Electric Light Orchestra Announce Over and Out Farewell Tour

By Andy Greene

Andy Greene

Jeff Lynne ‘s Electric Light Orchestra are going to call it quits after one final run they’re dubbing The Over and Out Tour. The 27-date tour kicks off Aug, 24 in Palm Desert, California, and wraps up Oct, 25 in Los Angeles, California, though it’s possible they’ll add additional legs before it ends. Ticket sales begin March 22.

The original incarnation of Electric Light Orchestra ran from 1970 to 1986, landing timeless hits on the charts like “Mr. Blue Sky,” “Evil Woman,” “Strange Magic,” “Don’t Bring Me Down,” and “Turn to Stone.” When frontman Jeff Lynne dissolved the group to produce other artists, including George Harrison and Tom Petty, ELO drummer Bev Bevan carried on with new musicians under the moniker ELO Part II, creating bitterness between the two camps that lasts to this day.

“I had all these negative thoughts before agreeing to play Hyde Park,” Lynne told Rolling Ston e in 2016, “but the crowd just went bananas all the way through. They loved every minute of it. It was the best show I’d ever been involved with up until that point.”

FOREIGNER To Announce 'Major Tour' For 2024

In a new interview with Rock Show Critique , FOREIGNER bassist Jeff Pilson spoke about the band's farewell tour, which officially launched in July. Asked how he trek is going so far, he said (as transcribed by BLABBERMOUTH.NET ): "Well, it's been going great. [Support band] LOVERBOY have been amazing. The shows have been phenomenal. The attendance has been really crazy. We're freaking out at how many people are coming. And it's just been great. It's just such a wonderful night of music. Like I say, between LOVERBOY and us, it's a [fun]-filled night, chock full of hits."

Pressed about FOREIGNER 's touring plans for 2024, Pilson said: "I can't give you all the details, but yes, we will be touring through 2024. And there is a major tour in mind, and we'll be announcing it shortly so you'll hear about it."

Earlier this month, Pilson told the Idaho radio station 94.9 FM and 104.5 FM The Pick about FOREIGNER 's farewell tour: "Well, this isn't the very final leg, but yes, it is the farewell tour and we do mean it. But it's gonna go at least till the end of 2024, so it may not be the last time you see us, but yes, we are seriously calling it a day. We wanna go out while we're still on top, so the feeling is very strong that that's what we're gonna do. And I stand by that because I think it's a show of integrity."

Asked if FOREIGNER 's fall 2023 Las Vegas residency will mark the band's final performances, Pilson said: "No. No, no. Well, not necessarily. We don't really know yet. But we know that we're gonna do eight shows at the beginning of 2024, the end of March and early April, and then we have another residency later in 2024, the end of October and early November. So, yeah, quite, quite a bit of Vegas residency next year, which is pretty exciting. But I don't know if that's gonna be the absolute last show or not, but possibly."

He added: "And just because we're doing a farewell tour doesn't mean that we're doing a complete retirement. I mean, we still may do occasional shows here and there — you know, special events or whatever. It's just this is the end of that 'nine months in the year you're on the road' kind of thing."

FOREIGNER will bid goodbye to the Las Vegas Strip with an exclusive headlining two-part "Feels Like The Last Time Farewell Tour" residency at The Venetian Theatre inside The Venetian Resort Las Vegas. The shows will be held March 6 through April 6, and October 25 through November 9, 2024 at 8:30 p.m.

Joining Pilson and founding FOREIGNER guitarist Mick Jones in the band's current lineup are lead singer Kelly Hansen , Michael Bluestein on keyboards, guitarist Bruce Watson , Chris Frazier on drums and guitarist Luis Maldonado .

In July, Hansen was asked by Mike Hsu of 100 FM The Pike if he and his FOREIGNER bandmates already know where and when the final show of the farewell tour will take place. Hansen said: "We're just starting to kind of wrap our brains around what that might be. And listen, there's a lot of pressure from a lot of different areas to get me to continue to do this. And I can't see that I'm gonna continue to do this. So we're now looking… 'Cause when you're a band like FOREIGNER , you're already booking a year in advance. So we're already deeply into 2024. But we haven't decided yet where the last show's gonna be."

The only remaining original member of FOREIGNER , Jones suffered from some health issues beginning in 2011, eventually resulting in heart surgery in 2012. Ever since, it is never announced whether he will be appearing with the band for specific shows — it just depends how he is feeling.

Hansen told 100 FM The Pike about Jones : "He's with us whenever he's able to be with us. And he is still the architect of this band. And he and I have worked closely for many years. And the great thing about it is that we've always been very simpatico about our ideas and about how we think things should be done. So, yeah, whenever he can be with us, he is."

After singer Lou Gramm left FOREIGNER in 2003, Jones took some time off before regrouping a couple years later with an entirely new lineup, featuring Hansen and Pilson , among others.

Gramm was the voice on FOREIGNER 's biggest hits, including "Feels Like The First Time" and "Cold As Ice" from the band's eponymous debut in 1977, and later songs like "Hot Blooded" and "I Want To Know What Love Is" .

The Eagles have reportedly agreed to a residency at James Dolan’s $2.3 billion music venue The Sphere in Las Vegas after their “Long Goodbye” tour , which ends in the Netherlands and was originally touted as the band’s final tour, according to The New York Post .

The band’s frontman Don Henley will be joined by Joe Walsh and Timothy B. Schmit for 10 weekends beginning in September through December though the total number of shows and terms of the deal have yet to be disclosed, sources close to the situation told The Post.

The Post reported that a spokesperson for The Sphere did not comment on any artists who will be performing at the venue unless it has already been announced.

Dolan has reportedly been courting the Eagles since last year. Meanwhile, Dead & Company were originally scheduled to play 24 shows at the spherical theater from May to July, but extended their stay by another 10 dates through the end of August, according to sources.

There were initial reports that Dolan attempted to bring Beyoncé to The Sphere though plans for that have since stalled.

The first band to play at The Sphere was U2 with their last show earlier this month.

The Eagles stopped in Newark’s Prudential Center last April for its “Hotel California” April, while it performed at he same venue for its “Long Goodbye” tour last September.

Gene Simmons  is putting away his makeup and saying goodbye to his time with KISS.

On Monday, the 74-year-old rocker spoke with ET's Denny Directo from the Godzilla x King Kong: The New Empire premiere in Los Angeles and gave an update on his life and career after completing KISS' last world tour . The group played their final show in December, four years after embarking on the End of the Road tour in 2019 .

For Simmons, the completion of the tour is now allowing him to focus on his solo music career. Up first is a gig in South America, which includes Simmons and his bandmates, Brent Woods, Zach Throne and Brian Tichy, playing at the Summer Breeze music festival in Brazil in late April.

"We've got a little side band called the Gene Simmons Band, and we'll be headlining festivals across Europe, South America... no more makeup for me," Simmons said.

Simmons said that while he may be bidding farewell to one chapter of his life, it does not mean that he is completely ignoring his past with the band, which made up 50 years of his life.

"But we're the luckiest people in the world," he said of his KISS band members. "And yes, yes we were old enough to watch the very first season of ET, before it was ET, it was just Entertainment Tonight."

The group first assembled in 1971 and played their final live show in December 2023 at Madison Square Garden. At the time, they shared that while they were saying goodbye officially, they wouldn't be falling off the face to the earth entirely.

"The end of the road is the beginning of another road," said band member Paul Stanley during their last performance. "We're not going anywhere. You’ll see us in all different things all the time. We’ll see you in your dreams."

The legacy of the rock group lives on forever, especially in the hearts of fans and music lovers alike. One of those fans just happens to be Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire star Brian Tyree Henry, who also talked with ET from the carpet of the film's premiere.

While discussing the new installment in the franchise, the 41-year-old actor described returning to the Godzilla x Kong story for a second time as "more punk rock" and feeling "like a KISS concert."

When ET pointed out that the KISS icon was in the building for the event, Henry called Simmons "legendary" and said that the appearance was serendipitous.

"I didn't know that. I've literally -- on this campaign -- have been comparing this movie to a KISS concert the whole time," he said. "Oh, well that's perfect."

Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire  releases in theaters on March 29.

Jeff Lynne’s ELO Announce 2024 Farewell Tour

By Nina Corcoran

Jeff Lynnes ELO

Jeff Lynne’s ELO , the modern incarnation of Jeff Lynne and his band Electric Light Orchestra , have announced a farewell tour. Dubbed the Over and Out Tour, the shows will take place across North America this summer and autumn, beginning on August 24 in Palm Desert, California, and lasting on through to October 25 when Lynne and the band will conclude their goodbye run in Los Angeles. See the complete list of tour dates below.

Electric Light Orchestra spent their original run releasing beloved pop-rock and prog records in the 1970s and ’80s before disbanding in 1986. Jeff Lynne went on to record two solo albums of his own, 1990’s Armchair Theatre and 2012’s Long Wave , before reforming the group under the moniker Jeff Lynne’s ELO in 2014. The newly regrouped band wrote two albums together: 2015’s Alone in the Universe and 2019’s From Out of Nowhere .

Back in 2020, Jeff Lynne was made an Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) , an honor that he said he was “extremely humbled and grateful” to receive. “To be recognised for my work is an extraordinary privilege,” he added.

Rock legend expects to make farewell tour, then ‘crawl off to die’

  • Robert Higgs, cleveland.com

NEW YORK – As he approaches 80, rock legend Pete Townshend says the Who might have one final tour left to do.

It won’t be just for the joy of music. Townshend confesses he’s also been touring for the money.

“It feels to me like there’s one thing the Who can do, and that’s a final tour where we play every territory in the world and then crawl off to die,” Townshend said in a recent interview with The New York Times .

An original founder of the group 60 years ago, Townshend is responsible for some of the rock supergroup’s most iconic songs -- “My Generation,” “I Can’t Explain,” “Who Are You,” “Baba O’Riley,” “Won’t Get Fooled Again” and nearly all the songs in the rock opera “Tommy.”

Today there’s just two of the original members left: Townshend and lead singer Roger Daltrey, already 80.

Townshend acknowledges that such a tour would be one last chance to cash in.

“I don’t get much of a buzz from performing with the Who,” he told The Times. “If I’m really honest, I’ve been touring for the money. My idea of an ordinary lifestyle is pretty elevated.”

Townshend interviewed with The Times in anticipation of the Broadway opening of “The Who’s Tommy” at the Nederlander Theatre in New York.

Get tickets for The Who’s Tommy at the Nederlander Theatre now: VividSeats , StubHub , SeatGeek , TicketCity and Ticketmaster .

The rock opera, first released as an album in 1969, still resonates. It has been performed as ballet in Montreal, as opera in Seattle and as an orchestral work in London. Townshend adapted it for Broadway in 1993. Now it is undergoing a revival.

“The idea that “Tommy” was locked in the postwar period was of no consequence to audiences,” Townshend told The Times. “They were looking at the meat and potatoes of family life, and the way even the best parents can [expletive] things up. ... It has the idea that whether you’re an abused child or a healthy child, we prevail ultimately, by turning toward the light. That’s simplistic but it’s also powerful, particularly when set to music.”

Tour or no tour, Townshend still intends to continue putting out music, he told The Times.

“I’ve got about 500 titles I might release online, mostly unfinished stuff,” he said. “We’re not making Coca-Cola, where every can has to taste the same. And it’s turned out, surprise, surprise, that rock ‘n’ roll is really good at dealing with the difficulties of aging.”

The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band Announces Farewell Tour

bands on farewell tour

It is the end of an era, and at a time when the eras of other legendary country bands and artists are coming to a close here in 2024. After six decades in the service of country and roots music, the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band is calling the touring life quits, announcing a farewell tour spanning through 2024. From folk rock at their inception, to bluegrass revivalists in the ’70s, to country radio hitmakers in the ’80s, The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band have just about done it all, and in a way that has been revered and wildly influential throughout music. Jerry Jeff Walker may have written “Mr. Bojangles,” but it was the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band that popularized the song and had a hit with it in 1970. Formed in 1966 in Long Beach, California, they were part of the emerging folk rock scene, though soon found favor with country as well, putting together a diverse catalog of American roots music that’s one of the most formidable and revered in history. The band perhaps released their pinnacle contribution to country with 1972’s Will The Circle Be Unbroken . Criticized by some previously for not taking the roots of country music seriously, the landmark album saw appearances by country and bluegrass legends such as Roy Acuff, Doc Watson, Earl Scruggs, Mother Maybelle Carter, Jimmy Martin, and many more. The album became like a road map for many folk and rock fans to find their way into country, as well as a bridging together of two generations of performers. In the 1980s, the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band became mainstays in popular country, landing 15 Top 10 hits in a row, including three #1s: “Long Hard Road,” “Modern Day Romance,” and one of their signature songs, “Fishin’ In The Dark.” These many accomplishments have led to some considering that the band should be in the Country Music Hall of Fame. The final remaining constant members of the band have been singer and guitarist Jeff Hanna, as well as drummer Jimmie McFadden. Multi-instrumentalist John McEuen was also with the band for the first 20 years, and then rejoined the band in 2001 before leaving again in 2017. The farewell tour is being dubbed “All The Good Times.” No specific reason for calling it quits has been given. A statement from the band reads, “‘All the Good Times’ perfectly describes our career. Playing our music for Dirt Band fans all over the world has been an incredible experience for us. The most important part of that has been the connection to our audience — that beautiful communal give and take is like nothing else. That’s the very spirit we’ll be celebrating as we head into our farewell tour. We’re really looking forward to seeing you folks. Good times will be had by all!” The current lineup of the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band also includes keyboard player Bob Carperter who’s been with the band since 1979, as well as bass player Jim Photoglo, Ross Holmes on fiddle and mandolin, and Jaime Hanna on guitar and vocals. Part of the farewell tour also coincides with opening slots for Hank Williams Jr. and Jason Isbell, speaking to the widespread appeal and influence of the band’s tenure. The news comes as multiple performers have been announcing their retirement from touring, including Joe Bonsall of The Oak Ridge Boys , and John Michael Montgomery . Ticket sales for the first leg of the tour will start Friday at 10 a.m. local time, with VIP packages available.

So sad to see them hang it up. They deserve the rest. They were indeed one of the few bands that transcended genres. My personal favorite of theirs was a minor hit from the late 79/80 (“Voila) An American Dream” written by Rodney Crowell. I’ll always love “Mr. Bojangles.” This may be somewhat controversial to say, but an early prototype of Bro-country can be found in their hit “Fishin’ in the Dark”. It featured Eagles member Bernie Leadon as lead vocalist. But their greatest contributions were the circle albums they did. I was really hoping they would have cut a fourth one before they retired. I shall miss them.

I thought Jimmy Ibbotson sang that one. He was always my favorite.

Jinnash you are correct. Jimmy ibbitson sang Fishin in the Dark!

I thought Jimmy Ibbotson sang that one. He was my favorite member.

I stand corrected. After confirming with Wikipedia, Bernie came on board with the following album. It was indeed Jimmy on “Fishin’ in the Dark.”

A family friend gave my dad and I free tickets to see them for the fourth row several years ago. One of the best shows I have ever seen. Not sure if I will be able to attend a show on this tour but hope to. Thanks for all the wonderful music!

Always sad to hear a group I listened to growing up finishing up their career. Its too bad if John McEuen doesn’t play on the final tour as he was an integral member of the group. From his autobiography, it sounded like a couple members of the group just kinda tossed him aside and thats why he left. Never a dull moment with bands!

Why are there no shows from you in Nevada during your final tour?

' data-tf-not-load src=

I was able to talk with John McEuen for several minutes following a concert in 2015. He signed an LP for me, and then asked the bus driver to bring my LP, Hold On, on to the band’s bus and have the other band members sign it for me as well. Within minutes I had signatures from: McEuen, Fadden, Hanna, and Carpenter. I hope to catch a show on this tour.

Farewell NGDB. Thanks for the memories and – for me in particular – the joyful music you made in the 80s.

“But we’ll give it a beat, and put it on the street, and we just might have another hit.”

When I decided to give country another chance after the drought of the seventies, NGDB’s was the first album I bought. I wasn’t familiar with any of the tracks on it, but it was awesome. I still stream it to this day. And they are great in person, BTW.

My parents took me on vacation to Nashville in the mid 80’s. We were walking around Music Row, and my dad says “There’s the guy from Nitty Gritty”. Sure enough, it was Jeff Hanna just walking down the street with a guitar case over his shoulder.

My folks always loved the Dirt Band and raised me on their music. I don’t know how many times we went on trips and listened to their Greatest Hits, Volumes I and II. Good luck to those guys on their last tour and I hope they make the most of retirement.

With them and the Oakridge Boys, the end of 2 great bands. Both will be much missed. Who can or will fill their shoes?

' data-tf-not-load src=

Always loved Nitty Gritty Dirt Band – used to hear Fishin in the Dark every day on the radio back in the 80s. Everybody still loves that song. I was pleasantly surprised one day to hear they were playing at the racetrack in Abbotsford BC about 15 years ago. Needless to say I left work early so me and the wife and baby could get there. Boss was there too… they played for a long time and it was a great. Thought I was lucky to catch them then, pretty awesome they are still making music.

Saw them 2-3 years ago. They put on a really good show. Full house. Hope to catch a date on this tour.

I’m a big fan of theirs. Not really sure there is a song by them that I don’t like. Long hard road is one of my all time top songs period. It’s not really in any way about it that relates to me but it just hits me in the feels. If you told me I could make one ten song CD and I had to live on an island for the rest of my life, that song would be on it. I think they have earned the rest.

' data-tf-not-load src=

I love this band. Grew up listening to them. I thought having Jaime Hanna and Ross Holmes in the band , young blood as it were, would revive Hanna, Fadden and Carpenter. Maybe Jeff’s just tired. What a catalog and what a legacy they leave.

yes, Ibby sang Fishin’, and most of the country hits.. He left 12 years ago.. I left 5 years ago.. after 50 years. It would be fun to play a final .. or last… with them, but doubtful they will call. Some of the best years of my life I ‘left on the road’… now doing my ‘own thing’, Circle music, NGDB favorites (mine) and eclectic songs..

You deserve to play the final tour with them John! I was fortunate to meet you a few years back at the Time Jumpers show at 3rd & Lindley, along with dj Eddie Stubbs. Thank you for your wonderful music!!

John you deserve to be on the final tour. Such a great musician! Was fortunate to meet you a couple years back at a Time Jumpers show with dj Eddie Stubbs there as well. Two Country greats!

The Circle music was, and is, a great gift to the world.

They were appearing at an venue in England back in the 1980’s when all the electric power in the theatre went off except for their instruments. Even the stage was blacked out. They hardly missed a beat and went straight into “Fishing In The Dark.” True professionals. A wonderful band too.

thanks for your comment… hey, spread it around!

' data-tf-not-load src=

I saw them in Asheville around 1982 in a very small club. They were still being billed as “The Dirt Band”. I remember thinking “Boy, how the mighty have fallen.” Little did anyone realize “Dance, Little Jean” was right around the corner.

Just got our tickets from the venue we are going to. However, decided to come and check out the web page. Our dates and venue aren’t listed above. So it must have been added on. My husband and I have listened to this band together since 1980. However, we both listened as well growing up. Can’t wait for the show. Have 2 months to wait!
