Most Americans are using umbrellas wrong. At least that’s true if you consider the personal canopy’s origin story. The first umbrellas, which date back thousands of years, were not meant to protect against precipitation, but to fend off the sun. Yes, they were sun umbrellas: parasols. The idea that they could also keep us dry didn’t arise until about 500 years ago. In the centuries since—given that being wet strikes many folks as less pleasant than being hot—the shields became more popular with the masses in the rain as opposed to in the sun. 

But, as we experience greater incidents of record-breaking heat , the humble sun umbrella may be poised to claim its place in our everyday carry. A personal shield is, in fact, a one-two punch: Blocking UV rays can help reduce a person’s risk of skin cancer—the most common form of the disease in the US—while portable shade also offers relief from the heat. 

The best parasols to get through the summer

To toss in your go bag: coolibar sodalis.

Collapsing to less than a foot, its protective canopy stashes easily into a tote, backpack, or beach bag. Though it’s slightly heftier than a budget option, a double-layer canopy helps it withstand gusts—be they during a mid-summer squall or the salt-smelling ocean winds.

With a 62-inch canopy, this burly umbrella can offer shade to you and a friend. The fabric is UPF 50, so scarcely any of the sun’s harmful rays will break through.

To go hands-free: Sport-brella Versa-brella

Where most might have a handle, this option clasps on. Wrap its jaws onto any round or square surface—from the arm of a lounge chair to the handle on a baby carriage—to free your hands. The mount has a 360-degree swivel, so it’s easy to adjust it as the sun moves across the sky.

Though its appearance may be as fine as paper, the fabric in this line of umbrellas hits a protection factor of UPF 50+, so it keeps nearly all UV rays off your skin. A traditional bamboo frame and matching carrying case complete the hand-crafted look.

Why aren’t parasols more popular?

First, let’s accept that parasols alone aren’t a one-and-done solution. On the beach, for example, sunlight reflecting off the sand can still reach your skin. In fact, in a 2017 study published in JAMA Dermatology , subjects who slathered on SPF fared better against sunburn than those who simply camped out under their beach umbrellas; more than two-thirds of the latter group had at least one burned spot by the following day, compared to just one-quarter of the SPF group. 

What parasols do have on creams and lotions, however, is the ability to create a kind of microclimate. On average, shade can feel 10 to 15 degrees cooler than sunlight, offering respite from the blaze that generally leads to comfier living. A thermometer reading won’t be any different, but avoiding solar radiation is key to finding chill. Consider this: After a government-run campaign to get more men carrying sun umbrellas to reduce incidents of heatstroke in Japan, officials reported that parasol-toting fellas sweat less than dudes donning sun hats.

These efforts also hit on the key sun umbrella sticking point: Culturally, we struggle to get on board. Even in countries where the devices are common—including China and throughout the Middle East—they’re predominantly used by women. Turkey, though, is a standout; one study found that umbrellas and hats are the most-common form of sun protection . Tech historians note that in Western culture, the parasol is tied largely to upper-class ladies, oh-so-very fussy and Edwardian, and faded out of fashion by the end of the 19 th century. 

Today, it appears that slinging a miniature beach umbrella over our shoulder on hot summer days simply doesn’t occur to us . Almost across the board, skin protection recommendations from dermatologists trumpet sunscreen, sun hats, UV protective clothing, and sunglasses, but few offer up the parasol. A 2013 study of their effectiveness out of Emory University notes that “it remains to be determined if the handheld umbrella can be a socially acceptable form of sun protection in the United States.”

How effective are parasols at blocking the sun?

That same research found that umbrellas purpose-built for sun protection are highly effective at blocking harmful UV rays. The team compared basic off-the-shelf rain umbrellas with one from Coolibar, a company that specializes in UV protective clothing. The Coolibar successfully shielded 99 percent of the harmful radiation, while a standard Totes model provided shade from 77 percent of the rays. And, overall, black umbrellas did a better job than other colors they tested, including pink and silver models. 

Sun-protective fabrics like those Coolibar uses have their own scale of efficacy, called ultraviolet protection factor (UPF). Think of it as the opposite of the SPF rating you see touted on sunscreen bottles—which are a measure of how long it takes exposed skin to burn in the sunlight. Rather than how much radiation gets through, UPF is about how much a fabric blocks. Products marked UPF 50, for instance, deflect 98 percent of the sun’s harmful rays.

Manufacturers tap chemical treatments and dyes to reach max protection, but synthetics like polyester and nylon do well on their own. That helps explain why Emory found any old umbrella will do a decent job casting off the sun. A ‘brella won’t replace your trusty sunblock, but it can amplify and prolong your protection—and keep you feeling fresh and cool—when used along with SPF.

How to Choose a Sun Parasol: What to Consider

Design is a major factor to consider when choosing a parasol. Sun parasols come in a variety of designs, with fashion-oriented parasols feature lace and beautiful embellishments.

However, these gorgeous lacey works of art are not usually the most durable and tend to lack a high UV rating (lace is not a great UV blocking material since it’s thin and has many holes, allowing plenty of sun to get through).

Other parasols are more like UV umbrellas , with a similar shape and style to an umbrella, but with a few more decorative elements.

Keep color in mind as well – most classically styled parasols come primarily in white, but some feature other bright color options too.

UV Protection

Some parasols are made with UV protection in mind, but others won’t do as much to protect against the sun’s harmful rays. Since many parasols are focused on style and vintage designs, they’ll feature lace materials that are aesthetically beautiful but are not the best materials for blocking UV rays , providing little sun protection.

Consider what’s more important to you – a high UV rating or an elegant-looking parasol! You might have to negotiate between the two.

Ideally, you’ll want your sun parasol to be lightweight enough that you can carry it comfortably, but with a design sturdy enough to keep its shape. Most of the more elegant parasols feature stunning lacework and designs at a cost to portability – the more gorgeous the parasol, the less compact it will likely be!

If you’re looking for a sun protection parasol that’s more focused on function over form, consider opting for a UV umbrella – they are basically umbrellas designed for sun protection, and they tend to be much more lightweight, compact, and simple (as well as cheaper) than the more elegantly-styled parasols.

What kind of handle do you want on your parasol? Some people prefer a modern ergonomic design, while others opt for a vintage-styled handle that is more reminiscent of a time period when parasols were used daily by nearly everyone!

If you plan on adding sun protection gloves to your outfit, make sure that you’ll still be able to easily grip your parasol with the gloves on, as some UV protection gloves can be quite slippery!

Shape & Shade Coverage

In general, bigger is better when it comes to shade coverage. Depending on how big of an area you want to be protected under your parasol, there are different sizes available. The average-sized parasol covers one person, while larger parasols can protect closer to two people.

There’s also the shape to consider.

Some parasols have a rounded half-circle design similar to an umbrella. However, other parasols feature a flat circular top that doesn’t have any side edges. These flat-style parasols are commonly found as traditional Asian parasols, and while they have a beautiful style, they can be a bit trickier to shade yourself with.

The best parasols for sun protection vary in style, design, and coverage. Some provide a substantial UPF factor to block UV rays, while others are less practical but have an incredible one-of-a-kind design. I Pretty Much Live Under One of My Dozens of Parasols All Summer

Talk to any dermatologist , and they’ll tell you that if you want to avoid looking like one of the California Raisins, the best thing to do is invest in some fancy sunscreen , buy a good sun hat , and wear long sleeves in 90-degree heat. Or, they’ll also tell you, don’t go under the sun at all. As a fair-skinned blonde in Los Angeles, I’ve decided to stake out some kind of middle ground, becoming the kind of person who carries a parasol (I still wear sunscreen, though). Parasols have been around for thousands of years, and it’s because they’re the simplest, most practical sun protection there is, especially those versions with UPF, the fabric equivalent of SPF.

Beginners, take note: Parasols may seem hard to pull off in real life, but really, the only rule to follow when carrying one is to avoid clocking passersby with it. I’ve got a parasol on deck for every summer outfit and social occasion — these are the five in my current rotation, many of which I buy in multiples.

I like a solid-colored paper parasol for a number of reasons, but mainly because it’s the most casual parasol and doesn’t call a lot of extra attention to itself. Plus, if you lose it, you’re only out about seven bucks max, so there’s no real heartbreak. I buy at least a dozen of these every summer and spread them around my life, so I’ve always got one on hand — at work, in my car, in my boyfriend’s car, and at my mom’s house. I pack an extra one in my tote when heading to the Rose Bowl Swap Meet, and always wind up gifting it to a grateful, sun-baked pal or stranger.

The most dramatic parasol of all is a pointy, pagoda-shaped one. This one is striking already because of its height, but when you add an arresting black-and-white color scheme, you’ve got a true statement piece. Since it’s already a lot of look, I’ll wear it with a plain T-shirt dress and flat sandals .

A black crochet parasol is my go-to when I want to add a bit of goth style to an outfit. Crochet provides a bit less sun cover than any other parasol, so you have to be careful, but it also allows you to peek through it while still giving yourself a bit of shade, which is quite convenient if you’re trying to spy on someone at a garden party. You just want to make sure you don’t wind up looking like some frilly Gothic Lolita, so I’ll use it while in a T-shirt and denim pencil skirt.

I’ll break this one out when it’s a true scorcher and I don’t have my precious Lily-Lark handy — the floral motif is a bit “old lady” for everyday use.

The price tag is worth it — but not if you’re prone to losing umbrellas.

Our team member took this product out during an intense storm in San Francisco akin to a hurricane complete with “purple winds,” and this umbrella stepped up to the challenge like a true hero. It made it through strong winds and rough handling like a champ without popping inside out. Our tester reported back, “It felt like the wind was going to pick me off the ground and the umbrella survived that!”

It also dried quickly and showed no signs of wear. The grip was comfortable, and the umbrella provided ample protection from the rain. Weighing under a pound and just shy of a foot long when unopened, it’s the perfect size to throw into a bag or backpack without feeling like it’s even there. The color options are impressive with 11 styles to choose from, ranging from classic black to fluorescent pink. When it comes to weathering storms with style and reliability, this umbrella takes the cake, leaving flimsy alternatives in the dust. While primarily designed for sun protection, it proved durable and provided satisfactory rain coverage for one person, although the lopsided design (one half of the umbrella is longer than the other) required adjustments in windy conditions. The material is durable, but we found that the frame can be flimsy depending on what it's attached to.

Blunt Metro Umbrella : It’s clear that this umbrella’s structure provides durability, but despite its quality build, we found it to be too large for daily commuting and travel. However, this could be an excellent option to keep at home.

Samsonite Windguard Auto Umbrella : The umbrella's durability and quality materials make it feel sturdy and capable of withstanding harsh weather conditions, providing reliable protection. However, it requires significant force to close, which could be challenging for individuals with limited hand or arm strength. It also only comes in one color option: black.

EuroSchirm Swing Liteflex Ultra-light Weight Trekking Umbrella : This umbrella has a lightweight design and spacious canopy that accommodates two people comfortably, but the high price point and elongated size of the collapsed umbrella limits its portability and affordability compared to other travel umbrellas on the market.

Our T+L team tested 18 travel umbrellas in everyday scenarios to assess ease of use, protection, durability, portability, and value. We followed a comprehensive examination to evaluate each option, including overall construction, packability, performance in wet weather and windy conditions, coverage, drying time, and sturdiness. We used the umbrellas in a variety of practical scenarios, including rainy and windy days, and tested them while commuting to and from work to determine functionality, versatility, and durability. 

We took notes on how easy it was to open and close the umbrellas and their portability in different sized bags. Special attention was paid to the durability and quality of the umbrellas’ materials, including the fabric, wire structure, handle, and pole, to assess long-term resilience. In wet weather conditions, the umbrellas’ performance was evaluated in terms of its coverage, sturdiness, and comfort. Assessments include whether the umbrella adequately protects from rain, its size when fully open, the comfort of the handle, and stability in windy conditions. If exposed to rain, we also took notes on the time it took for the umbrella to dry completely and any signs of wear and tear. Some options did not make this list due to low-quality materials that blew inside out too easily and didn’t offer adequate coverage in the rain.

Our long-term plan includes testing these umbrellas for an additional six months to monitor each umbrella’s performance and durability in different travel scenarios and weather conditions. As we continue to test the umbrellas in various real-world settings, we will take notes on portability, practicality, and durability, ensuring a comprehensive evaluation of each travel umbrella’s reliability. We will update these results if our findings should change and as we test new umbrellas.

We recommend opting for umbrellas that are specifically designed for travel since they are often more compact and lightweight compared to regular umbrellas. Additionally, pay attention to the dimensions of the umbrella when it’s fully open. Some travel umbrellas are designed for one person, while others are larger and suitable for two. We purchased the Rain-Mate Compact Travel Umbrella so our reviewer could put it to the test. Keep reading for our full product review.

The Rain-Mate Compact Travel Umbrella comes in a tiny size that makes it highly appealing for travelers. You can stick this umbrella in your suitcase or purse and virtually forget about it, given it weighs just one pound and packs up to just 12 inches in length. 

As a traveler, I was particularly intrigued by the performance promises. This tiny umbrella was designed to outlast wind and storms despite its compact size. To find out if this was one of the year’s best travel umbrellas , I took the Rain-Mate out on a test-run during a rainstorm in New York City. Read on to find out whether or not it lived up to my expectations. 

Performance: Struggles with the wind

Based on its 42-inch canopy, I had a feeling this umbrella would keep me dry—and it did. It’s a spacious umbrella with more than enough room for one. Then the wind hit. The NYC waterfront has some mighty gusts of wind, and the Rain-Mate Compact Travel Umbrella simply couldn’t withstand them. After the third gust, the umbrella flipped, leaving me scrambling to flip it back as I dodged puddles and sought shelter.

Unlike many cheap umbrellas that flip once and go kaput, this umbrella has fiberglass ribs that make it easy to flip back.

To test it out in milder weather, I took the umbrella to Central Park on a breezy, sunny day. I used the umbrella to stay cool while reading on the lawn. Yet again, one gust too many sent this umbrella flipping. 

Here’s the good news, though: Unlike many cheap umbrellas that flip once and go kaput, this umbrella has fiberglass ribs that make it easy to flip back. Would I prefer it not to flip at all? Of course. But at least you won’t need an entirely new umbrella whenever a little wind hits.

Design: A large canopy that opens quickly 

When I first used the Rain-Mate Compact Travel Umbrella’s auto-open button, I was blown away by two things. First, I loved how quickly it opened. When I’m traveling, I’m often running in and out of stores, public transit, or restaurants, so the quick auto-open, auto-shut feature controlled by a button on the rubberized handle makes the umbrella highly functional when I need it most. 

Another impressive feature? Despite its tiny size, this umbrella’s canopy reaches 42 inches. While I could have fit someone else under the umbrella with me, I enjoyed keeping it all to myself—because I stayed pretty dry! (That is, until the wind hit.)

The quick auto-open, auto-shut feature controlled by a button on the rubberized handle makes the umbrella highly functional when I need it most.

While the manufacturer site doesn’t specify what material was used for the canopy, it feels like nylon to me. Unfortunately, it does not have UV protection features. While it kept me cool (when it wasn’t flipped out) during my sunny day at Central Park, I would’ve been better off with an umbrella built with UV protection . 

Portability: A compact, easily packable size

This umbrella weighs about one pound and packs down to 12 inches via a three-fold telescopic shaft, making it easy to stash in a travel purse or my go-to travel backpack . Given the umbrella’s size, it’s easy to throw it in a carry-on suitcase and forget about it—until you’re on a trip and need it!  

Despite its tiny size, this umbrella’s canopy reaches 42 inches.

Price: On par with competitors

At around $20, the Rain-Mate Compact Travel Umbrella is priced fairly and is comparable to its closest competitors. It costs more than the cheapest umbrellas, but it works slightly better. Plus, it’s guaranteed for life; no matter what happens, the company will replace it free of charge.

Competition: Can’t beat the competition

Repel Windproof Travel Umbrella: When comparing the Rain-Mate Compact Travel Umbrella with the Repel Windproof Travel Umbrella , both of which I tested, you’d expect the Rain-Mate to be much cheaper. It’s not nearly as durable, it flips out in the wind (when the Repel umbrella doesn’t), and it lacks Teflon waterproof material. Yes, it has a lifetime guarantee, but so does Repel. And yet, the Rain-Mate Compact Travel Umbrella is around $20, while the Repel Windproof Travel Umbrella—the better option, in our opinion—is only about $5 more. Both come in virtually identical sizes with similar colors, so the obvious choice—the one that withstands wind!—is the Repel Windproof Travel Umbrella.

Bodyguard Travel Umbrella: I also reviewed the Bodyguard Travel Umbrella, which packs down to about the same size as the Rain-Mate Compact Travel Umbrella (the Bodyguard closes to 11.5 inches long, while the Rain-Mate is 12 inches). When expanded, though, the Bodyguard is far and away the winner. It reaches 46 inches, 4 inches wider than the Rain-Mate umbrella. That means multiple people can fit under the Bodyguard umbrella. And while the Bodyguard umbrella is not as durable as the Repel Windproof Travel Umbrella, it’s much more durable than the Rain-Mate umbrella, which feels flimsy when compared to its two main competitors. When it comes to the Rain-Mate versus the Bodyguard, the Bodyguard is the better choice. When it comes to all three umbrellas, the Repel Windproof Travel Umbrella takes the cake. 

The Rain-Mate Compact Travel Umbrella is far from perfect. Similarly priced competitors work better when it comes to wind, but this umbrella does its job in the rain—and it comes with a lifetime guarantee.

Parts of an Umbrella

Umbrellas have been used for centuries and have been improved upon throughout history. Today, using modern and old technology, we have the modern open - close umbrella to protect us from the rain. Modern umbrellas have many parts that make umbrellas convenient and useful in inclement weather. Depending on the design of an umbrella , it can have a lot of details to the mechanics of it. Here are the design aspect of a modern day umbrella from the bottom up.

Handle: The handle of an umbrella makes it easy and convenient to carry and hold onto in wet conditions. here are two main types of handles. First there is a crook handle, which is shaped like a hook, also known as a hook handle. The hook handle of the umbrella was designed to not only grip the umbrella handle in the rain, but also to carry your umbrella on your arm so that you could be hands free. The hook also allowed you to hang your umbrella to dry. You can still find many umbrellas with the hook handle, but many modern umbrellas now have a rubber handle. Rubber offers a durable yet comfortable handle when it is raining. Second type of handle is the straight handle. Often times modern, straight handle, umbrellas will have a nylon loop to carry your umbrella on your wrist for hands free comfort.

Tip cup: A tip cup is a lip above the handle of the umbrella. This is where the umbrella's canopy rests when it is closed so that it doesn't slide down past the tip cup. Sometimes the tip cup is actually part of the handle and sometimes it is a separate part.

Shaft: The shaft is a pole that makes up the body of the umbrella. The pole, or shaft, rises up from the handle and the tip cup. Inside of the shaft are tension springs that assist the umbrella in opening and closing.

Bottom spring: The bottom spring is the spring placed at the bottom part of the shaft (above the handle). The bottom springs allows the umbrella to open and close.

Center Spring (only on telescopics): The center spring allows the shaft of the umbrella to become shorter or longer and acts as a propel in the opening motion of the umbrella. Not all umbrellas are telescopic, therefore not all umbrellas will have a center spring.

Top Spring: The top spring is located up higher on the shaft, but bellow the runner when the umbrella is in its open position. The top spring allows the umbrella to open and close.

Runner: The runner is the part of the umbrella that slides up and down the tube or shaft of the umbrella when you open and close it. It is a T-shaped joint that allows the umbrella to collapse.

Tube: The tube is the space on the shaft between the runner and the top of the umbrella when the umbrella is in its open position.

Rib: The ribs run from the top notch to the seam of the canopy and support the canopy of the umbrella. The ribs are what give the canopy its bubble shape when the umbrella is open.

Stretcher: The stretcher is what stretches out the canopy when the umbrella is in its open position. The stretcher runs from the runner and connects to the canopy.

Top Notch: The top notch is at the top of the umbrella tube. The top notch connects the shaft to the canopy.

Open Cap: The open cap sits above the the canopy of the umbrella on the shaft and keeps the top of the canopy in its place and allows for tension of the canopy when the umbrella is open.

End: Above the open cap is the a pole called the end of the umbrella. The end of the umbrella is still part of the shaft.

Ferrule: The very tip or top of the umbrella, above the canopy, is the ferrule. Ferrules can be plain or decorative and can double as a walking stick or sometimes a weapon. However, keep in mind, most modern umbrellas are not designed as a cane, walking stick or a weapon.

Canopy: The canopy is the tent part of the umbrella that opens into an arc or dome shape and protects you from the rain.
