Nordic Visitor provided a Scottish adventure with a good variety of stops at historical and culturally significant locations. I enjoyed the scenery as we went along roads that the larger tour buses could not go. They also accurately worked in the timing to miss the large tours at the sites. I had several of the best meals that were included in the package. Save your time and effort and hire Nordic Visitor to plan your tour.

Everything went so smoothly, from pick-up at the airport to getting the rental car to checking into the accommodation. Planning with Rebecca & the Edinburgh team was easy - questions were always answered quickly. We were also extremely grateful that we were able to check into our first hotel early. Thank you all!

1. What countries are in the United Kingdom?

The United Kingdom (UK) is made up of 4 countries: England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. Great Britain includes England, Scotland and Wales.

2. Is the UK safe to visit?

Much like other countries in Northern Europe, you’ll find the UK is a safe place to travel. Similar to many European and Nordic countries, the UK ranks among the 40 safest nations in the Global Peace Index . You’ll find there’s also a modern healthcare system in place.

3. What is the best time of year to go to the UK?

While there’s no bad time to explore the UK, we recommend visiting sometime between April and October. In the UK, this spans spring, summer and autumn, and it’s when attractions have their longest opening hours.

Plus, temperatures are at their warmest from April to October – all the better for soaking up the sights. But, like the rest of Northern Europe, it’s worth remembering the weather can be changeable no matter the season.

Summer – June, July and August – is the most popular time of year to visit the UK. Not only because you’ll get the most daylight hours, but also because this is the warmest season.

In the countryside, you’ll see lush woodland and hillsides carpeted in purple heather. Meanwhile, the cities are bustling with visitors from around the world. You’ll also be able to take your pick from countless festivals celebrating the arts, food and more.

If you’d prefer to experience the UK at a quieter time of year, we recommend travelling in spring or autumn. After the chill of winter, April and May bring the joy of blooming flowers and longer days.

Or, visit during the autumn months of September and October, to see the trees turn fiery shades of orange and red. And if it gets chilly, just head for one of the snug pubs or cafés the UK is renowned for.

Read more about what to expect as the seasons change in this blog on the best time to visit the UK .

4. How many days do I need for my trip?

The amount of time you should spend in the UK depends on what you’d like to see and do during your visit.

If you’d like to experience more than one country within the UK, we recommend allowing at least 7-10 days for your trip. This way, you’ll have time to discover some of the top attractions in England, Scotland and Wales. And you’ll get to stay in more than one place.

Meanwhile, if you prefer exploring at a leisurely pace, you’ll want to give yourself longer, around 2-3 weeks. By spending more days at each stop, you’ll be able to delve deeper into the UK’s history, culture and landscapes.

Travel with Nordic Visitor and you can pick the length of trip that suits you from these UK tour packages. Plus, you could extend your time in the UK by adding extra nights to your itinerary.

5. Where are the top places to visit in the UK?

The UK might seem small, given that it's just over a third of the size of Texas, and half that of Spain. But when it comes to culture, history and natural beauty, you’ll find that this group of British countries has so much to offer.

Plus, with distinct landscapes and different nations within easy reach of each other, you can experience a lot on one trip. To get you started, here are some of the UK’s must-visit spots:

England • London • Bath • Oxford • York • Stonehenge • Lake District National Park • Peak District National Park

Scotland • Edinburgh • Glen Coe • Glenfinnan • Isle of Skye • Loch Ness • Loch Lomond and the Trossachs National Park

Wales • Llandudno • Prestatyn • Snowdonia (Eryri) National Park

Find out more in this article about the best places to visit in the UK . If you’re interested in exploring Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland as well, check out these 10 top spots on the Emerald Isle .

6. What are the top things to do?

With stunning scenery, lively cities and ancient historic sites, you’ll be spoiled for choice when deciding what to do in the UK. You could immerse yourself in postcard-perfect countryside, soak up local knowledge on guided city tours, and so much more.

Discover our local experts' top recommendations for things to do in the UK :

  • • Visit museums and galleries that range from world-renowned attractions to hidden gems
  • • Dive into the mysteries of the past as you explore prehistoric forts and Neolithic stone circles
  • • Marvel at craggy peaks, glittering lakes and rambling forests in the UK’s national parks
  • • Get a glimpse into the UK’s rich heritage when you visit fascinating Roman and Viking sites
  • • Sample UK cuisine, whether it’s freshly caught fish and chips or a refined tasting menu
  • • Take an invigorating walk by the coast and let the salty sea breeze blow the cobwebs away
  • • Punctuate your days touring the UK with the much-loved British tradition of afternoon tea
  • • See how kings and queens lived throughout the ages as you tour grand castles and palaces
  • • Head into a relaxed pub at the end of the day to share stories over a glass of something local
  • • Hunt for TV and movie filming locations from the likes of Harry Potter , Bridgerton and Outlander

7. What’s the best way to travel in Britain?

The best way for you to discover the UK depends on the kind of travel experience you’re looking for.

For instance, if you want the freedom to go at your own pace, then a self-drive tour of the UK is ideal. And although you’ll be taking the wheel yourself, you can relax knowing we are just a phone call away. If you need assistance during your trip, you can reach us anytime on our 24/7 helpline.

You’ll also have your own dedicated travel consultant to book your accommodation and arrange car hire with a tried-and-tested local partner. Plus, get a road map with recommended attractions and the suggested route for your trip drawn by hand.

This makes a self-drive tour the perfect way to see the UK’s must-see sights with opportunities to stop whenever you like along the way.

If you’d rather not drive, why not explore the UK in a guided group? Touring the UK with a knowledgeable guide leading the way, you and your fellow travellers will discover the UK together. And with a group size of up to just 15 guests, you’ll be able to travel in a comfortable minibus and get more time with your guide.

For the ultimate personalised travel experience, you could opt for a private tour of Scotland with your very own professional guide.

8. Who are Nordic Visitor’s UK travel experts?

Nordic Visitor’s travel experts are your eyes and ears on the ground. When you explore with us, you’ll get a dedicated travel consultant who’ll handle the details of your booking. This means you can relax and look forward to your trip while they organise your accommodation, local transport and excursions.

Not only that, but they have plenty of insider knowledge to share with you. Let your travel consultant know what your interests are and they’ll be happy to advise you on the experiences you won't want to miss.

For some insider information on your UK trip, read these  travel tips from a local expert .

9. What is included in a Nordic Visitor tour of Britain?

When you take a trip to the UK with Nordic Visitor, your travel package includes: • Accommodation • Daily breakfast • Local transport as detailed in your itinerary • Activities included in your tour package (with the chance to add optional excursions) • Personalised itinerary and printed guide with information about local attractions and practical travel tips • Access to our 24/7 helpline for on-trip support when you need it

  • Self-drive tours
  • • Car rental with a trusted supplier
  • • Unlimited mileage
  • • CDW insurance
  • • Authorisation for 2 drivers
  • Small group tours
  • • A professional, English-speaking driver-guide
  • • Transportation in a comfortable minibus
  • • Some meals, as mentioned in your itinerary
  • • Entrance fees to attractions specified in the itinerary

10. Does Nordic Visitor have a flexible booking policy?

Yes, Nordic Visitor offers optional cancellation insurance which protects your payment. If you need to cancel your trip before you arrive, you won’t lose any money you’ve already paid us. Depending on the terms and conditions, you’ll be given a partial refund along with travel credit you can use with us in the future.

What’s more, with our cancellation insurance we’ll rebook your entire tour once if you need to change dates, without additional fees. Learn more about this risk-free, flexible booking policy in our Book with Confidence terms .

If you don’t have cancellation insurance with us, check out our normal booking terms . And we always recommend taking out personal travel insurance to cover you on your trip.

11. Why use Nordic Visitor instead of booking everything myself?

At Nordic Visitor, we’ll save you time and effort by planning your getaway for you.

When you arrange a trip yourself, you have to carry out all the research and book each part of your tour separately. And if you need to change your itinerary, you’ll need to do the legwork yourself.

Plus, as we're a UK-based travel agency, England, Scotland and Wales are on our doorstep. In other words, when you book with us you can be sure you’re getting an authentic travel experience organised by local experts.

Our travel consultants have designed your itinerary to ensure you take the most convenient and scenic route between stops. They’ll also book you into high-quality accommodation, and share their insider tips with you. You can rely on them to feature the top sights and hidden gems that you wouldn’t otherwise know about.

So why not book with Nordic Visitor and let us take care of everything on your behalf? This way you can relax and look forward to your adventure. What’s more, during your trip you’ll have access to our 24/7 helpline. So you can contact us at any time if something unexpected crops up.

12. Do I need a visa to travel to the UK?

Whether or not you need a visa to visit the UK depends on the length of your stay and your nationality. For example, if you’re a citizen of the USA, Canada, Australia or an EU or EEA country, among others, you won’t require a visa. But it’s essential that you bring your valid passport for entry into the UK.

You can check if you need a visa on the UK government website.

13. What sort of accommodation will I stay in?

We understand that where you stay is important, after all, it’ll be your home away from home during your trip. This is why our travel experts use their local connections to ensure you stay at excellent places throughout your tour.

In the UK, this includes a mix of gorgeous historical properties and contemporary retreats. Expect a warm welcome and a location that’s right in the heart of things. Not to mention a tasty breakfast each morning.

We carefully select each hotel, guesthouse and B&B for its high standard of comfort and cleanliness. Plus, on self-drive tours, you’ll have access to parking. This will either be on-site or at a convenient location close to where you’ll be staying.

Exactly where you’ll be staying on your trip depends on the level of accommodation you pick and availability.

14. Can I choose the arrival date?

Of course! With Nordic Visitor’s UK self-drive tours , you can begin your trip anytime from April to October.

For guided small group trips in the UK , select the departure that works best for you from a list of start dates between August and September. If you want to travel at a specific time of year, book early in case your preferred departure is filled.

You can check each tour’s availability calendar online to see what dates are bookable.

15. Will Nordic Visitor book my flights to the UK?

Flights aren’t included in these UK tour packages. This gives you the flexibility to choose where you’d like to fly from, along with the flight times and prices that work best for you. If you have any questions about your journey to the UK, don’t hesitate to ask your local travel expert for advice.

Before booking your tour package, we highly recommend checking what flights are available. But please wait until after your trip is confirmed to make your travel arrangements.

Once you’ve received an email confirmation from your dedicated consultant, you can go ahead and purchase your preferred flights.

16. What should I pack for my trip?

No matter when you decide to visit, you can expect the weather in the UK to be changeable. So while the driest weather is between April and October, it’s worth being prepared for both rain and shine. Not to mention the fact that the temperature can vary a lot, depending on the season and where you are in the UK.

For instance, at the height of summer in London, you might experience temperatures over 30°C (86°F). Meanwhile, at the same time of year in the Scottish Highlands, the average temperature is around 15-17°C (59-63°F).

If you plan to spend time outdoors, pack these essential items and you’ll be covered from spring through to autumn:

  • Comfortable hiking shoes or boots
  • Waterproof jacket and trousers
  • Warm, insulated jacket
  • Fleece or woollen jumper
  • Cosy hat, scarf and gloves
  • Light base layer tops
  • Lightweight trousers or shorts
  • Sunglasses, sun hat and sun cream
  • Reusable water bottle
  • UK plug adapter

You might also want to bring a couple of smart outfits for dining out in the evening.

Our trip, starting and ending in Edinburgh and looping through the Highlands with an emphasis on the Isle of Skye, Inverness, and Speyside, was very enjoyable, much to the credit of our travel agency. We were awed by the sheer beauty of the Highlands, the warmth and friendliness of the Scottish people, and the country's fascinating historical sites.  Our culinary experience was outstanding, with a variety of traditional dishes and contemporary cuisine prepared by world-class chefs. As could be expected, distillery visits gave us an opportunity to enjoy a range of whiskey flavors and styles. Jane, the owner of the travel agency, was accommodating in creating the ideal itinerary, finding superb lodging and dining experiences for us, and helping us through last-minute bookings due to a flight cancellation.  Our driver/guide was personable, knowledgeable, timely, and professional. He entertained us with amusing Scottish lore, local and regional information, and eagerly adjusted the itinerary as needed to suit our personal tastes and interests.

Zicasso’s travel company helped plan our trip in October 2023, and it was an incredible experience. Beginning in the fall of 2022, when we initially sought assistance with planning our trip, our travel agent took a significant amount of time speaking with us, communicating via email, and, in response to feedback, providing updated itineraries that were more aligned with our family's interests and vacation style. Follow-up while we were in the country was exemplary. I don't think an email or text sent to the company failed to elicit a response in less than a few hours (even with some staff members being in the US and the time change). The post-trip call was equally enjoyable. It felt like we were working with close friends who were invested in the success and happiness of our family on this vacation. I hope it is more than once (now twice) in a lifetime that our family journeys to Scotland. When we are able to return, it will definitely be with our travel team's assistance! A special note of thanks to Zicasso for making it possible to locate a company as incredible as our agency!

We thoroughly enjoyed our first trip to Italy and Zicasso's travel partner did a marvelous job putting it all together. They were able to get things set up promptly as it was under three months from the time we decided to schedule the trip to the departure date. During that time, it went from being just my husband and me to adding our three adult sons, and they helped readjust the schedule and budget to make it more affordable for five of us. All three hotels (Rome, Florence, and Venice) were excellent regarding location, cleanliness, and customer service. That we were American and were unfamiliar with Italian transportation because we had never been to Italy, it was extremely nice to have private transfers and all the train transfers set up. Even when we arrived by train in Venice, they had a person there to meet us and assist with transport to the water taxi, then walk us to the hotel. Everyone was professional, helpful, and on time. The tour guides were also wonderful and so well-educated. There were several modifications needed as we worked through the itinerary and changes to who was coming when, and our tour operator was very easy to work with on these. The only negative was that it was non-refundable if you needed to cancel in the 70 days before departure, even though many of the hotels stated refundable if canceled within a few days. Many tours I looked at and used on this trip could be canceled and refunded within 24 hours. I found this a much safer way to schedule tours and not lose out if there were any issues affecting our tour days. It's always a risk not knowing if someone in the group will be ill or injured and not able to participate. There is a $250 service fee for each change if the team needs to make changes once the final itinerary has been completed, so that does need to be taken into consideration. We were fortunate that we did not need to make any last-minute changes. I would strongly recommend our travel agency and will use them for our next trip.

The trip was wonderful and the support from the travel agency was unstinting. From the first day, they were quickly responsive and continually exceeded our expectations. We had no hiccups along the way, so we didn't need to call on them during the trip, but I am confident they would have sorted any issue that arose.  Their reputation was reinforced by our guide in Bath, who said they were a great company to work with and emphasized that anybody who "picked up the phone" would provide the high level of service we'd experienced.

I cannot express how wonderful our experience was with Zicasso’s travel specialist. The trip was seamless, with every last detail planned and accounted for. We traveled from the US to Dublin and drove to Belfast. From there we traveled to Bushmills, Galway, and ended in Dublin for a few days before heading home. All of our experiences were one-on-one (no group tickets!) and all tour guides were knowledgeable, friendly, and just had a great time. Our travel team was fantastic! I cannot recommend them enough.

Our anniversary trip to Scotland and Ireland, planned by Zicasso’s travel company, was unforgettable! Our travel agent was very easy to work with! She made several adjustments to our itinerary at our request and also to address some of the vendor's changes, such as one of our flights (originally from Inverness to Dublin) and one of our "in a local home, dinner and cooking lessons" (originally in Scotland). She was cognizant of my budget constraints and suggested I do some of the driving myself to reduce the cost of private drivers. Then, during our trip, little things like a wine and cheese board in our room upon our arrival in Edinburgh were very much appreciated! Also, when things didn't go as planned (flight delay from Aberdeen to Dublin), she was available (at 2am Pacific time) to help smooth out the bumps! Even the way our trip itinerary built up to a subtle crescendo with our stay in a castle made this a trip we will never forget!

On this amazing planet, one can find an abundance of places with spectacular scenery. Scotland is one of those. However, what you can’t find is our travel team. Had it not been for their professionalism and expertise, we would have probably buzzed along in our own car, going ooh and ah, and missing all the wonderful spots that made our trip so memorable. In the planning, Zicasso’s travel agent was always attentive and quick to respond with a suggestion or a nay or yay. Our travel agent was delightful company. She is a historian, geologist, and geographer, all rolled into one, with a great sense of humor. At one point we got stuck in an unprecedented weather event. Not to worry, our travel team was on it with an alternative, so we really didn’t miss much. But the icing on the cake is how much they care about their clients. It is obvious they love their country and want to share it with everyone. And they did, to the fullest and utmost extent!

Travel Gossip Awards winners revealed during The Travel Celebration

Travel Gossip Awards winners

Jet2 was the biggest winner at the second annual Travel Gossip Awards, which also saw multiple wins for Gold Medal and Attraction World.

The awards, presented on Tuesday evening by BAFTA-winning TV double act Dick and Dom during The Travel Celebration 2024 in central London, were voted for by travel agents.

Jet2 won a total of four awards, one more than last year. Jet2.com held on to the title of Agents’ Favourite Airline while Jet2holidays was revealed as Agents’ Favourite Short-haul Operator as well as agents’ Favourite Travel Brand for the second year running.

In a fourth win on the evening for the UK’s biggest travel company, Jet2holidays trade sales team was named agents’ favourite.

Jet2holidays Director of Travel Agent Relationships Alan Cross said the airline and operator was ‘delighted’ to have won four accolades, adding that it was ‘a huge achievement and resounding recognition from independent travel agent partners and homeworkers’.

He added: “Our dedicated trade team work tremendously hard to deliver our award-winning VIP experience to agents and ensure they are doing all they can to support partners.

“These latest award wins demonstrate yet again that our Partners2Success approach is working, which is why it will remain at the centre of everything we do. We would like to thank everyone who voted for us.”

Gold Medal won three awards: Agents’ Favourite Long-Haul Tour Operator, Agents’ Favourite Tailor-Made company and Agents’ Favourite Supplier Call Centre.

Gold Medal Managing Director Simon Applebaum said: “We’re absolutely elated. We are all about agents and we’re grateful for the recognition they’ve given to us by voting for us in these awards.

“It’s been a fantastic evening at the Travel Gossip Awards and the fact we won has made it even better.”

It was a big night too for Attraction World, which scooped Agents’ Favourite Holiday Essentials Company while its National Retail Engagement Manager Nicky Yates was crowned Travel Gossip Legend.

Nicky said: “To me this is the most special award there is out there in the travel industry because it is the only one that is actually voted for by the travel agents.”

Some 380 guests attended The Travel Celebration, half of whom were travel agents, raising £1,500 for ABTA LifeLine.

The Good Travel Franchise agents to sell dynamic packages

  • Share by email

The Good Travel Franchise has joined The Advantage Travel Partnership’s AtolPlus scheme to enable its agents to sell dynamic packages for the first time.

AtolPlus was launched by Advantage’s in-house tour operation Advantage Holidays & Cruise last year and allows consortium members to sell dynamic packages under the central Advantage Atol licence. There are now has 15 Advantage members on the scheme.

The Good Travel Franchise, a member of Advantage Managed Services (AMS),  said the move would enable its 25 franchise members to sell a range of competitively-priced, financially protected packages.

It insisted franchise agents would continue to prioritise existing tour operator relationships in the trade but said the AtolPlus offering would help close sales where cost was proving a sticking point and preventing a conversion.

Chief executive Jake Cullum Hollins said giving members access to more travel product, competitive prices and the ability to control how much commission they earn through the AtolPlus scheme would help agents to retain clients and attract new business.

He said: “I am super excited to add this proposition to our offering, as it will allow our franchise owners to close the sale on even more bookings by giving them access to an additional range of holiday product, as well as provide them with a competitive edge on pricing.

“It also allows us to put our franchise owners in control of their own margins, giving them real flexibility on the revenue they can earn.”

Cullum Hollins said members had welcomed the move because it allowed them to give extra holiday choices to clients and fill gaps where there are product shortfalls as well as helping to deliver competitively-priced holidays.

He added: “I would like to take this opportunity to pass on my thanks to Advantage for everything they have done to make this possible for our business and franchise owners.”

Advantage trading and operations manager Mark Pullen said: “We are delighted to be partnering with The Good Travel Franchise to deliver our extensive range of dynamically packaged holidays.

“We introduced the AtolPlus service in 2022 to drive value to our members by giving them access to a range of differentiated product, through leveraging our global buying power.”

Travel-associated infections approaching pre-pandemic levels

UKHSA is reminding travellers of steps they can take to reduce the risk of infections .

travel agents in the uk

The UK Health Security Agency’s ( UKHSA ) latest data indicates that travel-associated mosquito-borne infections are returning to pre-pandemic levels . This includes infections such as dengue and malaria, which can cause severe disease, and highlights the need for travellers to take precautions to reduce health risks while abroad. Cases were confirmed in parts of the UK in individuals who had recently been abroad.

In 2023, 634 dengue cases were reported in returning travellers across England, Wales and Northern Ireland, aligning closely with those in 2019, during the pre-pandemic period, when 790 cases were reported. During 2023, most reported cases of dengue were acquired in Southern Asia and South-Eastern Asia, particularly India. However, there has been an increase in cases acquired in Central America and the Caribbean, due to recent outbreaks in these parts of the world. The World Health Organization (WHO) reports a significant rise in global dengue cases in 2023, resulting in over five million cases and 5000 deaths worldwide.

A total of 1,637 malaria cases were confirmed in England from January to October 2023. Cases returned to pre-pandemic levels, similar to the 1,719 cases reported in the UK in 2019 and matching closely with the average of 1,612 cases reported between 2010 and 2019. The WHO reports that in 2022, global malaria cases were estimated at 249 million, surpassing pre-pandemic levels by 16 million compared to 2019.

Eight Zika cases were reported in England in 2023 – a similar level to 2022. Case numbers peaked in 2016 with 725 cases, reflecting the Zika outbreak in America that year, before decreasing in the following years. While cases of Zika are low, the infection poses a particular threat to pregnant women and those trying to conceive.

Symptoms of mosquito-borne infections include fever, severe headache, pain behind the eyes, in muscles, joints and abdomen, loss of appetite, nausea and vomiting.

The Travel Health Pro website, supported by the UK Health Security Agency, has information on health risks in countries across the world and is a one-stop-shop for information to help people plan their trip abroad. Ideally travellers should consult their GP, practice nurse, pharmacist, or travel clinic 4 to 6 weeks before their trip for individual advice, travel vaccines and malaria prevention tablets, if relevant for their destination.

In countries with insects that spread diseases like dengue, malaria or Zika, travellers can protect themselves by using insect repellent, covering exposed skin, and sleeping under a treated bed net where air conditioning is not available.

A live, attenuated (weakened) dengue vaccine called Qdenga®▼ is licensed in the United Kingdom (UK). The Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunisation (JCVI) has recently advised individuals aged 4 years of age and older with confirmed dengue infection in the past and who are planning to travel to areas where there is a risk of dengue infection consider private vaccination. Travellers can discuss the vaccine and their eligibility with their local travel health clinic.

Dr Philip Veal, Consultant in Public Health at the UK Health Security Agency, said:

As travel has increased following the lifting of travel restrictions during the pandemic, so have serious mosquito borne infections. There are simple steps that people can take to reduce the risk of infections such as malaria, dengue and Zika. Prevent mosquito bites by using insect repellent, covering exposed skin and sleeping under a treated bed net. Plan ahead and visit the TravelHealthPro website to look up your destination and the latest health information and advice. Even if you have visited or lived in a country before, you will not have the same protection against infections as local people and are still at risk.

Dr Dipti Patel, Director of the National Travel Health Network and Centre, said:

If you are making plans to travel abroad this year, please take a moment to prioritise your health and plan ahead. Check the relevant country information pages on our website, TravelHealthPro, and ideally speak to your GP or a travel health clinic 4-6 weeks ahead of travelling to ensure you have had all the necessary vaccinations and advice you need to ensure your trip is a happy and healthy one. When you return to the UK, if you feel unwell, seek medical attention and ensure you inform your healthcare provider that you have been travelling recently.

It is also important for travellers to:

  • ensure your routine childhood vaccines are up to date
  • stock up on necessary medications
  • get valid travel insurance to cover your entire trip and planned activities

NaTHNaC and the UK Health Security Agency ( UKHSA ) have recently reviewed destination-specific guidance for countries with a known or possible risk of Zika virus. Zika virus infection is usually a short-lived flu like illness, sometimes with a rash and itchy skin, severe disease is unusual. However, while serious complications and deaths from Zika are rare, infection in pregnancy can cause birth defects. There is no drug or vaccine to prevent Zika. The only way to try and prevent infection is by minimising mosquito bites or by avoiding visiting regions with a known or potential Zika risk.

Importance of MMR vaccination

UKHSA is also reminding travellers to be aware of other checks they should do to ensure safe travels. Ensuring all members of your family, especially children, are vaccinated against measles with both doses of MMR is vitally important – especially if travelling to countries where measles cases are high, including parts of Europe .

There is concern that the high probability of importation from other areas experiencing high circulation could worsen the ongoing outbreak in England. It’s possible that the seasonal peak of the virus is also yet to be seen in the coming months.

WHO recently repeated their warning on the growing measles threat due to sub-optimal vaccination rates well below the 95% target, highlighting that more than half the world faces high measles risk.

It is known that hundreds of thousands of children in England are still not fully vaccinated against measles and are at risk of serious illness or lifelong complications, but measles is completely preventable with vaccination. The current childhood vaccinations campaign is reminding parents of the importance of ensuring their children are vaccinated on time. Parents should check their child’s Red Book now to ensure that children have had their MMR and other routine vaccines. If they are unsure, they should get in touch with their GP practice, and if needed, their child will be brought up to date. They should respond as soon as possible if the NHS is in touch to catch up. This is especially important if they are planning travel to countries that are currently seeing a high number of cases and will prevent them from spreading measles to others while traveling too.

Jury retires in trial of man accused of murdering Pc by planning armed robbery

A jury has retired to consider verdicts in the trial of a man accused of murdering a police officer by planning the armed robbery in which she was killed.

Piran Ditta Khan is alleged to be the mastermind behind a raid at family-run Universal Express travel agents in November 2005.

Pc Sharon Beshenivsky, 38, was shot on her youngest daughter’s fourth birthday as she arrived at the robbery on Morley Street, Bradford . She died from her injuries.

Her colleague Pc Teresa Milburn was seriously injured after being shot by the gunman – one of three armed men who had just carried out the robbery and fled the scene with around £5,400 in cash.

Prosecutors claim Khan, 75, was the group’s ringleader and played a “pivotal” role in planning the raid and giving instructions to the others.

They say this makes him guilty of Pc Beshenivsky’s murder “as surely as if he had pulled the trigger himself”.

Jurors have heard Khan was in a lookout car eating sandwiches with another of the robbers, Hassan Razzaq, while the raid was being carried out.

Prosecutors say he was the only one of the group who was familiar with Universal Express and had been using the business for years to transfer money to family in Pakistan .

Khan denies knowing that a robbery was going to be committed, or that weapons were going to be taken to Universal Express that day.

He has claimed the motive for the robbery was that the business’s owner, Mohammad Yousaf, owed him £12,000, and that debt collector Razzaq offered to get his money back when the pair met through a business associate.

Khan told Leeds Crown Court he thought the men Razzaq sent would simply “intimidate” the staff or, at most, “slap” them.

The judge, Mr Justice Hilliard, told jurors the defendant would be guilty of murder if they were sure he “intentionally encouraged the primary robbers to take part (…) and intended serious harm should be caused, if necessary, to carry out the robbery and escape with the proceeds”.

He sent the jury out to consider its verdicts at just before 3.30pm on Wednesday.

The court has heard Khan is the last of the seven men involved in the robbery to face trial.

He flew to Pakistan two months after Pc Beshenivsky’s death and remained there before being arrested by Pakistani authorities in 2020 and extradited to the UK last year, jurors were told.

The other members of the group have been convicted of offences including murder, manslaughter, robbery and firearms offences.

Khan denies murder, two counts of possession of a firearm with intent to endanger life and two counts of possession of a prohibited weapon.

He has pleaded guilty to robbery, telling his trial this was because the armed men had gone for his money and “it was my mistake to tell them”.

What we know about the container ship that crashed into the Baltimore bridge

  • The ship that crashed into the Francis Scott Key Bridge on Tuesday was the Singapore-flagged Dali.
  • The container ship had been chartered by Maersk, the Danish shipping company.
  • Two people were recovered from the water but six remain missing, authorities said.

Insider Today

A container ship crashed into a major bridge in Baltimore early Tuesday, causing its collapse into the Patapsco River.

A livestream showed vehicles traveling on the Francis Scott Key Bridge just moments before the impact at 1:28 a.m. ET.

Baltimore first responders called the situation a "developing mass casualty event" and a "dire emergency," per The Associated Press.

James Wallace, chief of the Baltimore Fire Department, said in a press conference that two people had been recovered from the water.

One was uninjured, but the other was transported to a local trauma center in a "very serious condition."

Wallace said up to 20 people were thought to have fallen into the river and some six people were still missing.

Richard Worley, Baltimore's police chief, said there was "no indication" the collision was purposeful or an act of terrorism.

Wes Moore, the governor of Maryland, declared a state of emergency around 6 a.m. ET. He said his office was in close communication with Pete Buttigieg, the transportation secretary.

"We are working with an interagency team to quickly deploy federal resources from the Biden Administration," Moore added.

Understanding why the bridge collapsed could have implications for safety, in both the shipping and civil engineering sectors.

The container ship is the Singapore-flagged Dali, which is about 984 feet long, and 157 feet wide, per a listing on VesselFinder.

An unclassified Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency report said that the ship "lost propulsion" as it was leaving port, ABC News reported.

The crew notified officials that they had lost control and warned of a possible collision, the report said, per the outlet.

The Dali's owner is listed as Grace Ocean, a Singapore-based firm, and its manager is listed as Synergy Marine, which is also headquartered in Singapore.

Shipping news outlet TradeWinds reported that Grace Ocean confirmed the Dali was involved in the collapse, but is still determining what caused the crash.

Related stories

Staff for Grace Ocean declined to comment on the collision when contacted by Business Insider.

"All crew members, including the two pilots have been accounted for and there are no reports of any injuries. There has also been no pollution," Synergy Marine said in a statement.

The company did not respond to a request for further comment from BI.

'Horrified'

Maersk chartered the Dali, with a schedule for the ship on its website.

"We are horrified by what has happened in Baltimore, and our thoughts are with all of those affected," the Danish shipping company said in a statement.

Maersk added: "We are closely following the investigations conducted by authorities and Synergy, and we will do our utmost to keep our customers informed."

Per ship tracking data, the Dali left Baltimore on its way to Colombo, the capital of Sri Lanka, at around 1 a.m., about half an hour before the crash.

The Port of Baltimore is thought to be the largest in the US for roll-on/roll-off ships carrying trucks and trailers.

Barbara Rossi, associate professor of engineering science at the University of Oxford, told BI the force of the impact on one of the bridge's supporting structures "must have been immense" to lead to the collapse.

Dr Salvatore Mercogliano, a shipping analyst and maritime historian at Campbell University, told BI: "It appears Dali left the channel while outbound. She would have been under the control of the ship's master with a Chesapeake Bay pilot onboard to advise the master.

"The deviation out of the channel is probably due to a mechanical issue as the ship had just departed the port, but you cannot rule out human error as that was the cause of the Ever Forward in 2022 just outside of Baltimore."

He was referring to the incident two years ago when the container ship became grounded for a month in Chesapeake Bay after loading up cargo at the Port of Baltimore.

The US Coast Guard found the incident was caused by pilot error, cellphone use, and "inadequate bridge resource management."

Claudia Norrgren, from the maritime research firm Veson Nautical, told BI: "The industry bodies who are here to protect against incidents like this, such as the vessel's flag state, classification society, and regulatory bodies, will step in and conduct a formal investigation into the incident. Until then, it'll be very hard for anyone to truly know what happened on board."

This may not have been the first time the Dali hit a structure.

In 2016, maritime blogs such as Shipwreck Log and ship-tracking site VesselFinder posted videos of what appears to be the stern of the same, blue-hulled container vessel scraping against a quay in Antwerp.

A representative for the Port of Antwerp told BI the Dali did collide with a quay there eight years ago but couldn't "give any information about the cause of the accident."

The Dali is listed as being built in 2015 by Hyundai Heavy Industries in South Korea.
