The capital of the province of Zamboanga del Norte , Dipolog City is abundant in natural resources.  Its fishing area is blessed with sardines hence sardine processing is one of the top industries in the city.  The city is even nicknamed as the “Bottled Sardines Capital of the Philippines” along with the “Gateway to Western Mindanao” due to the Western Nautical Highway or what is popularly called RoRo System.

In addition to beaches and rich marine life, the city boasts of other tourist attractions as well including mountains, caves, and a waterfall.

Best Time to Visit

It’s best to visit the Philippines during the dry season .  Dry season in the Philippines spans from November through April .  These are the summer months in this country.

Be aware that temperatures and humidity levels are particularly high in April and May .

The best time to be a beach bum and explore the islands is from March to May.

TIP:  This guide recommends that booking for Dipolog City summer trips should be done as early as possible, at least a month before your travel dates, since resorts get fully booked early.

The period from June to October is the rainy (wet) season and is best avoided due to the high possibility of typhoons. The typhoons can not only be destructive, but most tours and activities are cancelled under such circumstances.  Transportation via plane and boat is also seriously impacted as well.  This happens frequently so beware!

This guide recommends traveling to Dipolog City in April-May or in November-December , just before and just after the rainy season. This will likely bring fewer crowds, yet pleasant weather, and is also a great time to score a travel deal.

1 | Relax at Dipolog Boulevard

One of the best spots in the city to catch the stunning sunset, Dipolog Boulevard, also referred to as Foreshore Development and Wellness Center, is a 2.6-kilometer esplanade with basketball courts, playground, commercial buildings, restaurants, bars, and food kiosks.  The area is a great place to hang out with family and friends, watch live bands, and go jogging.

2 | Visit Dipolog Cathedral

For Catholic devotees or fans of Jose Rizal, Dipolog Cathedral, also called the Our Lady of the Most Holy Rosary Cathedral, is a must-visit spot when in the city.  Constructed in 1894, the historical church has carved ceilings made of hardwood and retablo originally designed by Jose Rizal, the country’s national hero.

3 | Hike at Linabo Peak

Linabo Peak is a popular hiking destination in the city.  It is the highest part of the city at 486 MASL and offers the scenic views of Dipolog, Dapitan , and surrounding areas.  Linabo Peak is known for its 3,003 steps lined with 14 Stations of the Cross.  During the Lenten season, a sacrificial climb referred to as Katkat Sakripisyo is being held to re-enact the death of Jesus Christ.

4 | Do extreme activities at Sicayab Cliffs

To satisfy your cravings for adventure, the best destination for you is the Sicayab Cliffs where you can try rock climbing and cliff diving.  Just four kilometers from it is Sicayab Beach where you can swim, skim-board, or just lounge at the beach on a lazy day.

5 | Enjoy the cool water of Sungkilaw Falls

Had enough of mountains or cliffs?  Head to Sungkilaw Falls and take a dip into its refreshing water.  Its location is secluded and requires a long walk with rough terrain to reach it.  Nevertheless, the trails leading to the falls are covered with dense forest so the hike can be relaxing even to first-timers.

6 | Hang out at Plaza Magsaysay

Plaza Magsaysay is a good spot to take a leisurely stroll, cool down, and relax.  It is within walking distance from Dipolog Cathedral and Dipolog City Hall.

7 | Nearby Attractions

Aliguay Island is part of Dapitan City but it is often a part of someone’s Dipolog itinerary.  Blessed with white sand and pristine waters, the island offers water activities including diving, snorkeling, kayaking, and jet skiing in addition to its restaurant which serves fresh seafood.

NOTE: The P’gsalabuk Festival occurs annually in Dipolog City every Saturday of May.

3 | Cucina Italiana

Cucina Italiana is a great place to indulge your cravings for authentic Italian dishes.  Their pizza is great and so is their organic pork steak, both cooked in a wood-fired oven.  The restaurant has a lovely ambience ideal for fine dining with family and friends.  Their price is a bit higher for local standards but the food, ambience, and overall experience make it all worth it.

4 | Umami Room and Olive Tree Bar

Located on the top floor of D’ Hotel, Umami Room and Olive Tree Bar is the best place to go for your Japanese food cravings.  They serve the best sashimi, California maki, and ebi tempura.  The best time to go is around sunset so you’ll be able to catch the breathtaking view from the top floor.

5 | Cafe Isabelle

Cafe Isabelle is a nice place to hang out with family and friends over cakes, pastries, and breads.  It’s a quaint little place with good ambience and a wide selection of foods.

6 | Esquina Deli Food Products

For mouthwatering crispy pata and steaks, there’s no other place to go but Esquina Deli Food Products.  They also serve steaks and other Filipino favorites such as lumpia and fried chicken.

KNOWN FOR: Spanish sardines, a dish where the fish is cooked slowly with oil, bay leaves and pickles.

Travel Costs

Accommodation.

A bed in a  hostel  dorm costs from 350 PHP ($7 USD), but smaller dorms can cost from 500 PHP ($10 USD).  For a private double, prices start around 700 PHP ($14 USD).

Most  budget hotels  begin at 700 PHP ($14 USD) per night for a double room and usually include free wifi and breakfast.  For  a three-star hotel , prices begin around 1,400 PHP ($28 USD) per night.    AirBnB  is also widespread throughout the country, with private rooms starting from as little as 500 PHP ($10 USD) per night.  For entire apartments, expect to pay at least 1,400 PHP ($28 USD) per night.

Resorts and luxury accommodations  vary greatly from 1,400 PHP ($28 USD) to 5,000+ PHP ($100+ USD).  However, there are some really nice resorts and luxury accommodations which are surprisingly affordable.

We use and recommend booking online to save money using  HostelWorld ,  Agoda ,  Booking.com , and  AirBnB . 

Local food is extremely cheap, with street food costing under 50 PHP ($1USD).  For an inexpensive meal at a local restaurant, prices start around 100 PHP ($2 USD).  For a meal at a mid-range restaurant with drinks and table service, expect to pay from 200 PHP ($4 USD).  Knowing that their target customers are primarily tourists, Western food venues can be pricey compared to Filipino food.  Also, some of the ingredients need to be imported, which contributes to the higher cost. Western food (burgers, pizza, pasta, etc.) is much more expensive but is still relatively affordable at around 200 PHP ($4 USD) for a meal and drink.

Fast food like McDonalds will cost around 200 PHP ($4 USD).  A beer at the bar will cost around 50-100 PHP ($1–2 USD).

A week’s worth of groceries will cost between 300-600 PHP ($6-12 USD) per person.  However, food in this country is so inexpensive, and kitchens & refrigerators are hard to come by, I don’t recommend cooking your meals here since there is plenty of delicious street food to eat at very cheap prices. You won’t make it as good as they do and the food is too delicious to miss!

Transportation

There are many modes of transportation available in the Philippines and each varies greatly. 

Public Transportation is cheap.  Bus services on the islands are inexpensive.  Local buses (called jeepneys) are the most common type of transportation in towns and cities. The fare is usually between 7-25 PHP ($.20–.50 USD).

On islands without a bus system, a taxi or tricycle is the only form of transport with fares starting at 50-500 PHP ($1-$10) USD for short trips. 

Taxis are everywhere, and they’re very cheap.  Most fares shouldn’t cost you more than 500 PHP ($10 USD) around town.  

To get between islands, you’ll need to take a boat or to fly.  There are ferries that connect the island together since they aren’t too far apart but, generally speaking, flights are the most realistic option. 

Flights between islands usually cost about 2,000-3500 PHP ($40-70 USD).  However, this isn’t the cheapest way to travel.  It’s only recommended if you have limited time.

Attractions & Activities

Most attractions and activities in the Philippines are pretty cheap. Most attractions throughout the area are FREE to enter, though some of the more well known and popular ones cost 5-100 PHP ($.10-$2 USD) to enter. 

Depending on the activity, most day tours only cost around 1,000-1,500 PHP ($20-30 USD), oftentimes less.  You have more bargaining power if you go with a group. If you are expecting to do some climbing, remember to pack some warm layers. It gets cold at the top!  

Other activities such as Island Hopping, scuba diving, helmet diving, swimming with whale sharks, jungle trekking, canyoning, ATVs, jet skis, wakeboarding, cruises, parasailing, horseback riding, cultural experiences, and tours can cost as much as 1,250-5,000+ PHP ($25-100+ USD).

The Philippines is one of the least expensive places to learn how to scuba dive. Learning to scuba dive usually costs about 15,000-20,000 PHP ($300-400 USD), but often includes FREE accommodation for the duration of the course, which lasts three or four days.

Always book your tours and activities when you arrive.  Stick to travel agents who are selling on the ground. If a travel agent won’t negotiate with you, move on to the next until you find one that will.  Booking tours online is almost always more expensive.

• Check the weather. The weather varies greatly throughout the Philippines daily.

• It’s not cool to raise your voice or show outward frustration in public.
• Be polite at all times. Realize that your country’s sense of humor may be different from Filipino humor and take this into account when interacting with Filipinos and while in public places.
• Things move at a slower pace. Accept it … don’t get frustrated … but do account for it.
• Don’t drink the tap water… but stay hydrated! Save money by buying large bottles (6-10 liters) of water and using it to fill your water bottle or hydration bladder in your backpack.

Staying Connected

You need to have a local-based SIM card in order to stay connected when in the Philippines. Network giants such as Globe and Smart have SIM cards you can use to make calls, send text messages, and also to connect to the Internet. A SIM card costs around 50 PHP ($1 USD) and usually comes with a FREE load worth 50 PHP ($1 USD). You can buy a card containing a code you can enter on your phone to replenish your load or buy an electronic load that is available almost anywhere in the city.

While you may not have problems with signal strength when in the city, it is not always the case when on islands or in remote areas of a province.  So when arranging for transportation pick up, say when renting a boat to take you to and pick you up from the island, it would be best that you make it clear what time you need to be picked up before the boatman leaves.

Things to Remember

This guide recommends to take note of the following while traveling in Dipolog City or in the Philippines in general.

There is a nationwide ban which prohibits smoking in public places including indoors, the streets, on sidewalks, in restaurants , and on public transportation, requiring smokers to use designated smoking areas.  Selling tobacco to and purchasing from or for minors is also prohibited. Violators are subject to fines (up to 5,000 PHP | $100 USD) and even 4 months in prison.

The minimum legal drinking age is 18.  Alcohol such as beer and hard drinks can easily be bought in grocery and convenience stores.  The most common alcoholic beverage is beer, generally served cold.  Local alcoholic drinks include tuba (coconut wine which is usually very strong) and potent moonshine-like clear liquors made from sugar or fruit.  Imported beer, wine, and name brand hard alcohol are available but expensive.

Drugs are illegal in the Philippines.  Don’t use, buy, or sell any non-prescription drugs while in the Philippines … not even marijuana.  It is considered an especially heinous crime to buy from, for, or sell drugs to children.  The penalties are severe … up to and including death.

Public nudity is illegal in the Philippines and is not tolerated.  Most locals consider it offensive.  There are laws which prohibit provocative and erotic clothing and swimwear, therefore carefully consider your clothings and swimwear choices to make certain they are not too revealing.

Foreigners & Expats

If you are not a Filipino citizen, remember that you are a guest when visiting this country … be certain to act accordingly.  Respect the people, their customs, and the environment and wlidlife. You can be deported and banned … so behave … but have fun and enjoy all that this wonderful destination has to offer.

Dipolog city: a guide on the best things to do and the best places to see.

The Gateway to Western Mindanao. The Orchid City.  Bottled Sardines Capital of the Philippines.

These names belong to Dipolog City , the capital city of Zamboanga del Norte. For me, however, Dipolog City is a place called home.

And home is what visitors feel the moment they arrive in my beloved hometown. With that, allow me to take you on a tour around the treasures of my city.

Welcome to Dipolog City

My Dipolog holds a charming blend of a traditional city and the wit of a progressive town. A refreshing gasp of clean air and that natural bucolic vibe await her visitors. Dipolog may be a small city but it is laden with history and culture.

Start your adventure at the heart of the city. The Our Lady of the Most Holy Rosary Cathedral is a magnificent structure built in 1894 and holds a touch of national history as its original altar was designed by no less than our national hero, Doctor Jose Rizal. Make sure you take a stroll around the Plaza Magsaysay and the Dipolog City Hall, too.

Your next stop would be the Santa Cruz Marker or “Punta Corro”, a tall cross commemorating the arrival of the early Boholano settlers in the city and located almost two kilometers straight from the Cathedral. The Marker is conveniently located at the Dipolog Sunset Boulevard where Dipolognons love to spend their afternoons. Be there in the late afternoon and catch the glorious sunset unfold its beauty before you.

For an eagle’s view of the city, go to the Linabo Peak where the challenge of taking 3,003 steps awaits. The climb will be worth it, though; at the peak, the view of Dipolog is truly breathtaking. Pun intended.

If you have an adventurous soul, schedule a trek at Cogon Ecotourism Park, as well. Enjoy communing with nature and take splash at Sungkilaw Falls while you’re at it!

The Food in Dipolog City

After the long stroll, a feast should be your worthy reward. For that, restaurants abound in the city. There’s Big Joe’s Cafe, for your choice of Filipino, Chinese or Western meals. Their Baby Back Ribs is a personal favorite – sweet and tender, and worth every bite. Then there’s Mooon Cafe for your fix of Mexican delicacies. Tacos and burritos, anyone? If you fancy going Italian, though, then UrChoice Bistro Cafe should be your choice for the best pizza and pasta in the city. The Green Kitchen, on the other hand, will soothe your appetite for both taste and nutrition.

The Night Life in Dipolog City

At night, the humble city transforms into a vibrant capital. The boulevard in particular becomes lively with acoustic sounds. Dine at our local version of McDo *, queues of food stalls for grilled and barbecue dishes. Chill at Karryl’s Grille or enjoy the company of friends and beer at Balai Resto Bar. And finally, add rhythm to the night and stomp to the club beats at the energetic Fat Cat. 

You’ll never expect Dipolog could be such a lively spectacle at night.

Sweet Souvenirs from Dipolog City

The experience of your Dipolog visit is simply a sweet memory. For you to remember this, indulging in some delectable treats is a sinless pleasure.

If there’s one pasalubong synonymous with the city, it would certainly be Montaño’s Sardines. These Spanish Style Sardines in corn oil are a traveler’s must-have. Bring home other varieties as well, like the Spanish Style Sardines in Olive Oil or in Tomato Sauce and Corn Oil, Milkfish in Olive Oil and White Wine, and Ginisang Bagoong ( fermented anchovies).

A bottle is not enough. Bring home a box (or two) of Montaño’s Sardines.

Add to your itinerary Cathy’s Kitchen, with their assortment of pastries and cake – their creamy tarts are a bestseller. And Classic Bakeshop, too. Their cupcakes are fluffy, cheesy and, as a friend would describe it, unlike any other.

• Flights from Manila arrive daily. Purchase your tickets in advance to avail of low fare promos.
• Going around Dipolog is budget-friendly. Normal fare is eight pesos per person. But for a tour around the city, hire a pedicab driver as your personal tourist guide. Just haggle with him for the price. Every tour comes with tidbits about our place, the way we live and why we always find a reason to smile.

• For your accommodation, stay at Top Plaza Hotel, the Ariana Hotel, Hotel Camila, or at D’Hotel and Suites. 
• Best to travel during the month of May for the Pagsalabuk Festival and the Feast in honor of Saint Vincent Ferrer. The Pagsalabuk or “Get Together” is a cultural feast celebrating the diversity of ethnicities not only in Dipolog but also the whole of Zamboanga del Norte. 
• Maximize your vacation by visiting Dipolog’s twin sister, Dapitan City, and explore Jose Rizal’s haven during his exile. Dapitan City is a mere fifteen minutes away from Dipolog.

Where Have You Been Lately?

Dipolog City in One Day

Who would want to miss a smoke-free city with its almost zero-crime rate? Surf the net, book a plane ticket, fly for only 1.5 hours to the Northwestern part of Mindanao, and set foot in  Dipolog City.

Let’s now see my checklist of what to do or visit during your laid-back Dipolog vacation.

HOLY ROSARY CATHEDRAL A proof of Jose Rizal’s (Philippine national hero) many talents, Holy Rosary Cathedral is one of the main tourist attractions in Dipolog, which should not be missed. Built circa 1895, it is said that Rizal designed the cathedral’s still-functional altar as requested by one of his former professors. As part of our Tourism Department’s campaign Lakbay Jose Rizal at 150 , the cathedral is also a stop for those who collect stamps for their Rizal passports. When you visit the cathedral, look for the statue of one of Dipolog’s patron saints located at the right wing entrance. I don’t know but, to me, it looks like it’s flipping its middle finger.

DIPOLOG BOULEVARD Just facing the vastness of Sulu Sea, Dipolog Boulevard is projected to stretch 3.5 kilometers once continuous development is completed. Presently, 1.4 kilometers of the boulevard can be used for recreational activities whereas restrooms and several benches are also built for visitors. And when you’re tired staring at the blanket of Sulu Sea, you can stuff your bellies with streetfoods from Dipolog’s own version of MacDo, a stretch of streetfood vendors which is just at the back of the boulevard. It means  makduko which literally translates to bending over so you can choose among the variety of food that each stall has to offer.

LINABO PEAK One doesn’t have to be sporty to be 486 meters above sea level. With just 3003 steps, the twin cities of Dipolog and Dapitan can now be viewed at the peak of Linabo, the highest point in Dipolog. Along the concrete steps are the 14 Stations of the Cross shaded by healthy trees where a community chapel can be found at the peak.

SUNGKILAW FALLS Ever heard of the Tyrolean Traverse? No? According to Outdoor Adventure Warehouse:

A Tyrolean Traverse is a method of crossing through free space between two high points on a rope. This is used in a range of mountaineering activities: rock climbing, technical and recreational tree climbing, caving and water crossings. A zip line is in essence a Tyrolean Traverse which is traveled down quickly with the assistance of gravity.

This is one of the popular activities in Sungkilaw Falls aside from rapelling, camping, and swimming. The cascading waters of Sungkilaw (insert meaning here) is amazing and to die for. Prepare for a short 200-step hike when visiting the falls.

COGON ECO-TOURISM PARK The whole park has a huge land area of 344 hectares where 40 hectares of its totality are home to rare fauna species as a result of a massive tree planting done in the late 1950s. Exotic birds, which are believed to have been inhabiting the city, can also be found in the park’s Aviary. Aside from these, a replica of a Subanen Village is built to showcase the tribe’s traditional dances, rituals, and talents in weaving baskets. The great thing about this part is you get to meet real Subanen people wearing their colorful native clothing.

JIGGING Known as the only sport-fishing destination in the whole of Mindanao, every visitors must try jigging, type of fishing using, of course, a jig as a lure. Dipolog has its own association of Anglers who will be more than happy to assist you should you want to experience luring and catching up to 10-kilo gigantic fishes.

GOOD TIMES CAFE This is one cafe that will give you eccentric yet very relaxing vibes. Goodtimes Cafe is a 1000-square meter spot with a two-storey ancestral house filled with earthly statues, paintings, and other several form of artworks. It may look eerie to the eyes of the conservatives but the pieces of art filling each spaces of the cafe is nothing but exceptional. You can say that someone put so much effort to every artworks as depicted by the owner, Ed Tabancura, who never got to have a family of his own dedicating his life to continuous improvement of the cafe. A lot of known artists fly to Dipolog just to witness the beauty of this cafe-slash-art gallery.

DIPOLOG ROTONDA FOUNTAIN Also known as Pagsalabuk Circle, this fountain was designed to remind everyone how uniqueness can be also be a form of unity. The statues are of the Muslims, Christians, and Subanen, first inhabitants of Dipolog who have diverse beliefs yet united to protect the place from invasion and destruction. The bowl being raised to the heavens is a portraiture of thanksgiving and offering to the creator. The Rotonda is well-lit at night, perfect for picture-taking.

KARYLL’S GRILL You can have your dinner at Karyll’s Grill located near the boulevard to wrap up your day. Dipolog may be a laid-back city but Karyll’s Grill was awarded as best reseller of San Miguel Corporation’s beer last 2010 in the nationwide category. At night, the city transforms into a different environment as night parties are also held in Dipolog even on a regular weekend.

The pleasures of Dipolog go beyond the city limits. The Eco-Tourism Complex in Barangay Cogon is a leading environmental destination with a lush 344-hectare forest marvellous for trekking. The Subanen House within the complex is also where the traditional Subano dance is performed for the visitors.

Hi Dip! I might not be able to be of great help kasi our trip was organized by GMA 7. Pero most probably, you need to contact the people in charge prior your visit. The travel time however is like 20 to 30 minutes (from town proper).

Dipolog City: The Pride of Zamboanga del Norte

Dipolog shared much of its cultural history with the ancient town of Dapitan to which it once belonged. It traces its beginnings long before the Spanish conquistadores set foot on the island of Mindanao. This heritage has carried on to the present and has contributed to Dipolog's colorful and unique culture.

Dipolog Beach

Dipolog was previously known as Tulwanan, which means “a settlement by the river.” Its earliest settlers all belonged to the Subanen Tribe called Subanon or river people with an established religion founded in animism. These Austronesian peoples descended from the Malay ethnic group which roamed Mindanao and Southeast Asia via land bridges as early as 30,000 years ago. Later migrations of other tribes were made by water and took place over several thousand years.

Linabo Climb

The 3003 Steps to Linabo Peak offers a panoramic view of the twin cities of Dipolog and Dapitan. It is also the venue for the annual “Katkat Sakripisyo” of Catholic devotees who perform their penitential rites during the Lenten Season.

The Cogon Eco-Park is a 344-hectare reforestation area situated in Barangay Cogon established in 1958. Mature trees are growing wild in the area; species such as Mahogany, Teak, Yemane, Lumbayao, Molave, Acacia, Narra, Mayapis, Lauan, Narig, Tianong, Duguan, Lumbayao, Rattan and Nato. It is also one of the favorite camping sites of different mountaineering groups. Presently under development in the area are the information center, Subanen Valley, picnic cottages, well-landscaped ground at the entrance, parking area, aviary, and different cages for animals.

OISCA Forest Park

Adjacent to Barangay Cogon is Barangay Diwan, part of the eco-tourism complex housing the Organization of International Spiritual and Cultural Advancement or OISCA Forest Park, a joint project of the OISCA of Japan, locally managed by Heroshi Ikeda, and the City Government of Dipolog. It also houses the Dipolog OISCA Children’s Forest Park. The most prominent feature of the park is the Sungkilaw Falls.

The Historical Sta. Cruz – Punta Corro

Sta. Cruz–Punta Corro is the spot where migrating Boholanos from the Visayas landed and established settlement. A cross was erected by the settlers on May 3, 1905 as a thanksgiving altar to God for their safe journey. Roman Catholic mass were likewise celebrated on this area before the Spaniards established a chapel 1.5 kilometers inward along the town center street now known as Rizal Avenue. A Cathedral was later erected by the Spanish friars sometime in 1895 replacing the old church, with Dr. Jose Rizal designing the church altar from a sketch requested by his former professor, Fr. Jose Villaclara, once Dipolog's cura during the Spanish Era.

Dipolog Hall

Dipolog Hall was built on July 1, 1913 under the administration of General John J. Pershing. The corner street houses the monument of three prominent Dipolognons namely Hon. Pascual T. Martinez, the first appointed Mayor of Dipolog in 1913-1918, Rev. Fr. Nicasio Y. Patangan, the first Filipino Diocesan Priest of Mindanao, and Eugenio R. Margate, a farmer for 25 years who introduced the Margate System of Planting Rice.

Dipolog Fountain

Located at Estaka-Turno road junction is the Fountain of Blessings, the statutes represent the tri-people of Mindanao, which symbolize the diverse cultures prevailing in Dipolog. The bowl raised to heavens is a gesture of thanksgiving and offering to God Almighty for the generous outpouring of graces and blessings, bountiful harvests and sustained peace and prosperity.

Dipolog Boholana Handicraft

Located at Gen Luna St. Cor Magsaysay Dipolog City, people sell souvenir products. Tourists are welcome to visit or to watch how the shop's products are made. The souvenir shop is visited by many tourists. The store is owned by Elsa Leones. In late 2010 ,the original S and J is supposed to be located at Bonifacio Street but then transferred.

In Dipolog City, one can experience a quiet and scenic place in the south with a unique blend of the traditional and the contemporary.  There are bargains for fresh tropical fruits such as lanzones, mangosteen, rambutan, marang, manga, and caimito. Bring home famous local products like bottled sardines, uyap, ginamos, home-made corned beef, and Spanish Chorizo.  Gift your friends with delicacies as tinagaktak, bakya and lintoy, or just shop around for Muslim clothing such as the malong and the batik.

How to get there

All sites in Zamboanga del Norte can be accessed via Dipolog City:

• By Air: From Manila, Cebu Pacific Air offers daily flights to Dipolog City, the capital of Zamboanga Del Norte. Travelling by air takes approximately an hour. • By sea: There are ferries that offer transportation from Manila to Dipolog City. These ferries often take the Port of Pulauan in Dapitan City, and from there one can take public transportation to get to neighboring cities.  The Strong Republic Nautical Highway (RORO) could also be taken. It takes less than 48 hours to get to Dipolog City. • By land: Buses of the Rural Transit and the Evergood Trans Industries, Inc. travel to Dipolog city. From Dipolog Airport, go to the Dipolog Bus terminal. Travel time is 15-20 minutes.

The Rizal Park and Shrine

The Rizal Park and Shrine, also known as the José Rizal Memorial Protected Area, is a protected landscape and monument to the Philippines’ national hero in Dapitan, Mindanao. It protects the farm property in barrio Talisay where José Rizal was exiled for four years from 1892 to 1896 after being accused of sedition and planning the Philippine revolution in Manila by Spanish colonial authorities.

3033 Steps to Linabo Peak

The mountain’s name is derived from the word “dilaab,” which means “mountain of fire,” and where it got its name, Mt. Lab. Because the mountain is prone to burning easily, especially during the summer.

There are several trails leading up to Mount Lab, but the most popular route is the Ambulong Trail. The hike takes around 3 hours one way, so make sure you bring enough water and snacks. And don’t forget to enjoy the view on your way down!

Cathedral of the Our Lady of the Most Holy Rosary

The Dipolog Cathedral of the Our Lady of the Most Holy Rosary is Dipolog City’s most notable religious structure. This is the seat of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Dipolog.

José Rizal, during his exile in Dapitan, designed the first church altar of Dipolog Cathedral. The church has a wooden ceiling, carved stone bas reliefs of the Four Evangelists, massive adobe stone walls, and a reredos, among other features.

The Dipolog Cathedral is a major pilgrimage site and attracts thousands of visitors every year.

Church of St. James Church The Greater

The Church of St. James the Greater is a Roman Catholic church located in the city of Dapitan. It is dedicated to James the Greater, one of the Twelve Apostles of Jesus. The church was erected in 1892 by Father Mariano Gómez and it was the first Christian religious structure in Mindanao.

Jose Rizal, the country’s national hero, painted the altar background during his exile in Dapitan. The painting was destroyed by fire later on. A monument here marks the position where Rizal usually stood when he heard Mass every Sunday, since he could not approach the altar while attending service because of his ex-communication from the Catholic Church.

The twin square bell towers, with pyramidal roofs and semi-circular arched windows on either side of the main entrance, are framed by a simple Gothic façade with little decoration. The church is a sight to behold inside and out!

Aliguay Island

Dipolog City Photowalk 2021: Capturing my Hometown’s New and Familiar Places During Pandemic

Dipolog City, a 3rd class component city and capital of the province of Zamboanga del Norte, is a modest, yet progressive, place full of interesting sites. This unassuming city is bordered on three sides by undulating hills to the southeast and the historical Sulu Sea to the north. Dipolog is dubbed as Orchid City. Some claim it’s the “Bottled Sardines Capital of the Philippines.” It has also been called the Gateway to Western Mindanao. But for me, I simply call it “HOME”.

I grew up in Dipolog City and spent more than 15 years until I moved to Cebu for study and work. During the pandemic, I got a chance to revisit my hometown (after failing to go home over the holidays) and spent quality time with my family. As my time in Dipolog is very limited, I made sure to document my short stay and capture everyday life’s beauty, even during the hard times.

Dapitan in a Day

Travel Guide

Dapitan is located in the province of Zamboanga del Norte. It is a quiet city with plenty of hidden wonders filled with history and culture. The city is best known for being the place of exile of Philippine national hero Dr. Jose Rizal back in 1892-1896. Today, this quiet city is a great place for a quick vacation away from your normal daily life. Let’s begin the tour!

How to get to Dapitan City?

There are plenty of ways to get to Dapitan. Here are a few:

From Dumaguete City – Dumaguete Seaport offers direct route to Dapitan City. There are fast crafts and shipping lines available every week. Price will range from Php 300 (US$6) and up. Traveling time is about three hours.

From Cebu – One must take a boat or plane ride going to Dumaguete City. From there, take a direct boat to Dapitan City. Check the Dumaguete Ferry Schedules Here .

From Manila – One of the easiest ways to get to Dapitan City from Manila is by plane. Book a flight from manila to Dipolog Airport (neighboring town). From Dipolog City, you can take a public bus going to Dapitan. Non-air-conditioned buses called “Evergood Transit” will take 30 minutes and cost about Php 25 (US$0.50).

From Ozamis City – The second closest airport to Dapitan is Ozamis Airport. You can fly from either Cebu or Manila airport to Ozamis City. From there, you can take a Dipolog-bound bus and alight at Pulo (Dapitan junction). Travel time will be around 5 hours and fare for airconditioned bus is around Php 250 (US$5) and non-air-conditioned is around Php 190 (US$4).

Where to stay in Dapitan City?

There are several guest houses, inns, and pensionhouses that are perfect and budget friendly. Some are located along the Dapitan boulevard, making trips to tourists’ attractions super easy. Great budget places include Villa Pilar Pensione and   Travelbee Heritage Inn .  If you fancy a “proper” hotel, there are also a few located a bit further from the city center such as Dapitan Beach Villa and Jacinth Beach Club Resort . For an even more fancy stay, you can book your stay at the Dakak Park and Beach Resort . It is a bit pricy and a bit further from the sightseeing of Dapitan, but you do get the comfort of a better a “hotel experience” and beach.

Dapitan in a Day – What to See and Do?

Upon arriving in Dapitan, the first attraction to visit is the Rizal Shrine. As mentioned earlier, Dapitan is best known all over the Philippines for being the place of exile of Dr. Jose Rizal. He lived in the said area for four years and 13 days (from July 17, 1892 – July 31, 1896). During those time, he built his own home and taught other Filipinos in many subjects, wood work and metal work. Some of those remains can still be found at the Rizal Shrine where the Rizal Museum is also located. They are open every Tuesday – Sunday from 8am-4pm. In order to get there, you can take a pedicab ride for a few pesos.

Feel free to roam around the grounds. This tourist spot has no admission or entrance fee. However, donations are highly appreciated to maintain the place. If you are lucky, a tour guide will show you around the place and tell you historical stories as you pas by significant landmarks.

Tip: Bring your own water bottle and stay hydrated! It can get hot at times.

At one end of the boulevard, you will see the Rizal landing site or also known as Punto de Dissembarco De Rizal en Dapitan (Landing Point of Rizal in Dapitan). This historic landmark captures the night of July 17, 1892 when Dr. Jose Rizal landed on the beach of Sta. Cruz. The place is great for walking around and for watching the sunset. Don’t forget to take pictures of this beautiful site.

St. James Church

After the historical tour at Rizal Shrine and at the boulevard, make a quick stop at the St. James Church fronting the Dapitan Plaza. There is nothing too fancy about the church, however, it’s bright orange and white checkered roof and statues are definitely something to look at. Plus, a quick prayer doesn’t hurt.

Gloria de Dapitan – Food Hub & Entertainment

One of the main attractions that we highly recommend to visit when in Dapitan is the Gloria de Dapitan. This complex is filled with many food stalls, restaurants, entertainment centers and even an amusement park! The Gloria Fantasyland offers ride-all-you-can to different rollercoasters, bumper cars, rides and more! Prices will vary depending on the day and time you buy your tickets (see picture for prices). At around 8:30pm, you can enjoy the night show and parade of lights. It is a great way to end the night with some fire show, acrobatics, and parade. Truly a magical place to visit for both kids and adults.

After enjoying the different rides, you can roam around the rest of the complex where several food and drinks are available. There is also a cockpit, live bands, bowling alley and a big continent store. Visit Gloria de Dapitan on your first day in Dapitan. That way if you enjoy it, you can come back again before leaving. (That’s exactly what we did).

It is already inclusive of 4 hours of van use within the city. If you have time, you may also embark on a Dipolog tour. Please note that entrance fees are not included in this Dapitan tour and must be paid onsite. Most of the sites you will visit do not have an entrance fee, but please prepare cash for those that do.

On the day of your scheduled tour, you will be picked up at Dakak Park and Beach Resort 30 minutes before the start of your tour. When you are picked up, you will begin your Dapitan and Dipolog City tour. 

The itinerary on this tour is flexible and is dependent on your preferences. For your Dapitan City tour, there are several sites you can visit.

You can learn more about the country’s national hero, Jose Rizal, when you visit The Rizal Shrine , the Punto del Desembarco de Rizal , the Balay Hamoy Museum , and the Relief Map of Mindanao . 

The shrine is a historical landmark that is a piece of land in Barangay Talisay that was purchased by Jose Rizal himself. In 1913, the government converted it into a park and a shrine dedicated to Jose Rizal. The Punto del Desembarco de Rizal is the spot where Rizal is believed to have disembarked and first set foot in Dapitan. Balay Hamoy Museum is housed in a structure that Rizal used to frequent during his exile in Dapitan (the museum has an entrance fee of PhP 500 per person). Finally, the Relief Map of Mindanao is a landscaped map that Jose Rizal created himself.

Other spots you can visit in Dapitan are the City Plaza, St. James Parish, and Gloria de Dapitan for some shopping and dining (at your own expense). 

You may also go to Dipolog City, but note that any excess hours will incur an additional charge.

Next time you visit Dipolog City go to the Boulevard and try eating at "Magduko-duko". It's a row of stalls selling barbecue and puso (rice wrapped in woven palm leaves). The boulevard offers great sunset views.
