Virgin Voyages, the multi award-winning travel brand that was voted No. 1 in Condé Nast Traveler’s 2023 Readers’ Choice Awards, delighted customers on a recent Delta flight when Sir Richard Branson surprised them with a cruise vacation aboard his newest ship, Resilient Lady. The direct flight from Atlanta to San Juan was chosen in partnership with Delta Air Lines to celebrate the unveiling of Resilient Lady’s new homeport in San Juan later this year. Resilient Lady, named the “Best New Cruise Ship” in Cruise Critic’s 2023 Editors' Picks Awards, has several beautiful Caribbean itineraries taking flight this December and are now on sale.

Branson, founder of the Virgin Group, boarded the flight to personally gift all SkyMiles Members on the flight (18 and older) a free voyage to sail during the ship’s inaugural season in San Juan later this year.

Sir Richard Branson said, “The Caribbean has been my home for many years, and I’m very excited to welcome Resilient Lady as she sails from San Juan to visit the region’s most beautiful destinations. My excitement clearly couldn’t be contained, so we came up with a way to celebrate with a personal invitation and surprise for some unsuspecting guests on a Delta flight to San Juan. We’re grateful for our partners at Delta for joining in on the fun and look forward to showing everyone what it’s like to Set Sail the Virgin Way!”

Prior to boarding, Virgin Voyages hosted a full departure gate takeover, bringing to life elements of the ship's on-board experience to passengers at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport. Fliers were treated to original choreography from Virgin Voyages’ award-winning entertainment team along with Instagrammable photo moments and vignettes at the gate, specialty drinks and music to bring the vibe. In addition to the pre-flight entertainment, Branson was joined by Delta’s S.V.P. and Chief Communications Officer, Tim Mapes, for a generous game of roulette. Customers and passersby alike were invited to spin the wheel of prizes, which included Delta and Virgin Atlantic flights, Virgin Hotel stays, a Virgin Voyages cruise, Delta Vacations package, gift cards and high-end swag.

Sir Richard Branson and Delta Chief Marketing & Communications Officer Tim Mapes post for a photo during an event with Virgin Voyages.

“When two award-winning brands come together, they create magic for their customers. Delta is thrilled to have partnered with Sir Richard Branson and Virgin Voyages for this special surprise-and-delight for our SkyMiles Members on the flight,” said Delta’s Tim Mapes. “This is one more way in which we’re adding value to the program and unlocking exclusive experiences for our Members. Stay tuned for more with Virgin Voyages.”

Every Sky Miles member on a Delta flight got a free Virgin Voyages cruise, courtesy of Richard Branson himself

  • Delta passengers received a free Virgin Voyages cruise from San Juan on a recent flight.
  • Founder Richard Branson appeared at the airport in Atlanta to deliver the surprise.
  • The free Caribbean voyage was offered to all adult Sky Miles members aboard the flight.

Insider Today

Delta passengers on a flight from Atlanta to San Juan on February 29 found out they'd be getting a free trip back to the Caribbean destination later this year.

And this time, for a luxury, adults-only cruise on board Virgin Voyages' Resilient Lady — named the best new ship by Cruise Critic's editors in 2023 — a Delta representative told Business Insider in an email.

With a team of Virgin staff members by his side, the cruise line's founder, Richard Branson, showed up at the gate at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport in a red-and-black tailcoat suit over an untucked white button-down and a bold, black top hat — exuding a Willy Wonka vibe.

The Delta representative told BI that the billionaire brought "the vibes" with music, dancers, photo ops, cocktails, and a wheel of prizes to spin for, from Delta gift cards to free Virgin Atlantic flights.

Branson and his team boarded the flight to San Juan and presented all Sky Miles members 18 and older with a complimentary ticket for a 9-day Caribbean voyage in December leaving from San Juan — the ship's inaugural sailing from its new home port, according to the press release.

"The Caribbean has been my home for many years," Branson said. "My excitement clearly couldn't be contained."

Becoming a Sky Miles member is free, according to Delta's website .

The tickets were oversized and as red as Branson's suit — the Virgin brand's signature color.

According to a Virgin Voyages press release obtained by BI, the cruise has a starting rate of $1,120 per person.

A Virgin Voyages cruise is worth the price

Getting a free Virgin Voyages sailing is truly like winning a golden ticket.

I booked a Mediterranean cruise with the award-winning cruise line last summer. The seven-day voyage in a cabin with a balcony cost $5,900. And I thought it was well worth the price.

The ship was stunning inside and out, with modern designs, vibrant colors, and unique works of art. It was jam-packed with activities that made me feel like a kid again — without the presence of children — from an adult playground to jumbo-sized games and dance parties.

Thanks to an inviting staff, a luxurious cabin, and fine dining experiences, I felt like a VIP the whole time.

So, if I got this offer on a flight, I wouldn't sleep on it.

Virgin cruise cancels Australia sailings over escalating tensions in Red Sea

A major cruise company which took over Aussie ports this summer has been forced to cancel its future plans Down Under over growing fears for passengers.

Heightened tensions in the Red Sea has led a major luxury cruise line to cancel all of its sailings into Australia.

US-based cruise line Virgin Voyages has announced it will cancel all sailings by luxury, adults-only ship Resilient Lady to Australia starting later 2024 and early 2025.

It comes as Iran-backed Houthi rebels continue to attack and threaten container vessels sailing through the Red Sea in retaliation against Israel’s invasion of Gaza.

At least two dozen trips have been taken off Australian holiday-makers schedule as a result of the cancellation, including a six-night voyage from Perth to Melbourne in early December and a 7-night New Year’s Eve trip on December 29.

“We remain very concerned about potential escalations in the Red Sea over the next 12 months,” a Virgin Voyages spokesman said in a statement.

“This significant and ongoing conflict puts unacceptable risks for safe passage through the region for our sailors, crew and vessel.”

Yemen’s Houthis rebels released a video showing armed men seizing a cargo ship in the southern Red Sea.

As the Yemeni rebel group stepped up its attacks on ships in the Red Sea in protest against Israel’s war on Gaza, the US and UK have ramped up attacks against more than a dozen Houthi sites. The attacks, backed by Australia, came after the Houthis began hijacking commercial ships sailing through the Red Sea in November.

They have since attacked more than two dozen others with drones, missiles and speed boats.

The Resilient Lady, which was due to dock into Adelaide later this year, will now complete its Mediterranean sailing season in October and divert its course towards Puerto Rico in the Caribbean.

Virgin Voyages said all customers affected by the recent changes would receive a refund.

“To say that we are disappointed to have come to this tough conclusion is an understatement. These adjustments are happening now in order to minimise potential future disruption to our passengers’ holiday plans,” a spokesman said.

“We are currently working through options to return to Australia and the Asia Pacific region once regional repositioning opportunities become more tenable.”

Virgin Galactic grounded after a small part fell off vehicle during latest space tourism flight

V irgin Galactic is grounded after the company said a small part unintentionally detached from the mothership of its rocket-powered space plane on its latest space tourism flight.

The loss of the part, called an alignment pin, did not impact the safety of the mission, according to the company. The flight, called Galactic 06, launched on January 26 and marked Virgin Galactic’s first space tourism mission of the year after entering commercial service in 2023.

The company discovered the part loss during routine checks and notified government regulators on January 31, “in accordance with regulations,” Virgin Galactic said in a statement.

The pin was located on the underbelly of Virgin Galactic’s mothership, called VMS Eve, which is a twin-fuselage plane designed to carry the space plane, VMS Unity, under its wings to a high altitude before VMS Unity is released and vaults toward the edge of space.

The alignment pin “helps ensure the spaceship is aligned to the mothership when mating the vehicles on the ground during pre-flight procedures,” the company said in a Monday statement .

The pin also helps transfer “drag and other forces” from the space plane to the support structure that cradles the rocket-powered plane as it rides attached to the VMS Eve mothership, according to the company.

Virgin Galactic said it will work alongside the Federal Aviation Administration, which licenses commercial rocket launches, on a review of the issue.

The FAA said in a statement that it will carry out a “mishap investigation” and that the agency “must approve Virgin Galactic’s final report, including the corrective actions” before the company can return to flight.

“A return to flight is based on the FAA determining that any system, process, or procedure related to the mishap does not affect public safety,” according to a statement from the agency. “In addition, Virgin Galactic must request and receive approval from the FAA to modify its  license  that incorporates the corrective actions and meets all other licensing requirements.”

Virgin Galactic could not be immediately reached for additional comment Monday evening.

Flight expectations

Broader attachment structures remained in place during the flight, Virgin Galactic added in the statement, noting that the alignment pin does “not support the spaceship’s weight, nor do they have an active function once the spaceship is released.”

The VMS Unity usually flies affixed to the VMS Eve mothership until it is soaring more than 45,000 feet (13,700 meters) above Earth’s surface. Once at altitude, the VMS Unity detaches from the mothership and ignites its rocket engine, swooping upward toward the edge of the atmosphere.

Overall, the Galactic 06 mission “was a safe and successful flight that was conducted in accordance with Virgin Galactic’s rigorous flight procedures and protocols,” the company said.

“Virgin Galactic flights occur in restricted airspace and at specific geographical launch locations that control the hazards to people or structures on the ground,” Virgin Galactic’s statement reads. “The Company also observed no damage to the spaceship or the mothership.”

The FAA is tasked with giving the final go-ahead for commercial companies hoping to launch rockets and spacecraft. The agency’s role in this process, however, is only to analyze the potential risk that a flight poses to the public, people or property — not the danger to passengers on board commercial space vehicles, according to a moratorium set to expire in March 2024.

The FAA routinely carries out mishap investigations with private companies after a flight failure or other issue during a commercial rocket launch.

Virgin Galactic said it will “provide a further update at the completion of the (joint FAA) review and will confirm the flight window for the ‘Galactic 07’ mission, which is planned for the second quarter of 2024.”
