Tour de Suisse 2023 - Contenders and Prediction

Is there a Roglič vs Evenepoel showdown on the cards?

Words: Rachel Jary

With defending champion Geraint Thomas not taking to the start, the 2023 edition of the Tour de Suisse is open to a new victor. The start list in the race this year is of an extremely high quality, with many riders using it as a warm-up race for the Tour de France which starts just a few weeks later. There are time trial specialists such as Stefan Küng and Filippo Ganna taking to the start line to test themselves in the final ITT against the clock, as well as puncheurs and sprinters like Wout van Aert and Biniam Girmay looking for stage victories.

When it comes to the battle for the general classification, the world champion Remco Evenepoel sits at the top of the favourites list, returning to racing following his bout of Covid-19 which forced him to abandon the Giro d’Italia . Rumour has it, though, that maglia rosa winner Primož Roglič also fancies giving it a go at the Tour de Suisse, so Evenepoel could have some tough competition on his hands for the 2023 Tour de Suisse title. Here are the key GC favourites we expect to be mixing it up, as well as our prediction of the winner.

Remco Evenepoel

The Tour de Suisse wasn’t supposed to be in Remco Evenepoel’s plan at the start of the season, but after his attempt at the Giro d’Italia was curtailed when he tested positive for Covid-19, the Belgian has picked the race around Switzerland as his comeback event. How much this recent bout of illness has impacted Evenepoel’s form is yet to be seen, though his Strava profile tells us that the Soudal–Quick-Step rider has been able to put in some big training rides already ahead of his return to the peloton. Before he was struck with Covid, Evenepoel looked to be in incredible form at the Giro d’Italia, winning the opening time trial by a significant margin and going on to take victory in the time trial mid-way through the race too, despite already being ill at that point.

etappensieger tour de suisse 2023

Since the 2023 Tour de Suisse route features plenty of mountains and culminates with a long, flat final time trial, Evenepoel should be in his element. It’s a course design well-suited to the young Belgian talent, who is known to excel against the clock. Last year, Evenepoel took victory in the race’s final ITT, but struggled in some of the tougher mountain stages before that. A few weeks later he won the 2022 edition of the Vuelta a España , though, putting an end to any doubts around how well he could climb. We’re yet to see him be fully tested in the high mountains so far in 2023 after his Giro abandon, so the Tour de Suisse will be an opportunity for Evenepoel to go head-to-head with Primož Roglič, if the 23-year-old is back to his best post-illness.

Beating the likes of Roglič and Evenepoel is a tall order for the Ineos Grenadiers’ 21-year-old British talent Ben Tulett, but his recent form is a good indicator that he could be in with a chance at the 2023 Tour de Suisse. Tulett has already competed in five one-week stage races so far this season, with his best results coming most recently in the Tour de Hongrie, where he finished second, and then the Tour of Norway where he took the first GC victory of his career. Tulett can climb extremely well, but also performs impressively against the clock, making him a contender for victory the final time trial in the Tour de Suisse too.

Compared to some of his competitors, Tulett is relatively inexperienced at taking on the role of a general classification leader and the Tour de Suisse will form an important part of his development as a rider. It will take some pressure off Tulett’s shoulders that Ineos do have a range of options for this race, with Tom Pidcock and Magnus Sheffield both also taking to the start. It may be that the focus for the British team is mostly on stage wins, which will allow Tulett to make his assault on the overall without the stress of having the team’s expectations riding on his performance. Whether he is at the level to compete with the world champion and recent Giro d’Italia winner will be revealed during the race, but if things go right for Tulett, he could definitely be a key protagonist in the 2023 Tour de Suisse.

It’s been a turbulent couple of months for UAE Team Emirates’ Juan Ayuso, suffering from an ongoing injury to his heel which has prevented him from racing as much as he or his team would have hoped. Ayuso stormed to fame when he finished third in the 2022 edition of the Vuelta a España , a race in which he proved he is capable of climbing and competing with the very best when he is on form. This season, however, the Spanish rider has only raced once at the Tour de Romandie in April where he performed well, winning the time trial and finishing second on stage two in a reduced bunch sprint. As the peloton headed up the mountains towards Thyon 2000, though, Ayuso looked to struggle. He still finished a respectable 17th place on the general classification.

It’s now just over a month since the race in Romandie and Ayuso hasn’t raced in the gap between then and the Tour de Suisse. This means his form is a bit of a mystery, but he will undoubtedly be in contention for stage wins and he could, depending on his climbing legs, also fight for a general classification position. UAE Team Emirates do come to the Tour de Suisse with a plethora of options, including Jay Vine , who will want to perform well after suffering from some bad luck due to crashes in the Giro d’Italia, and home favourite Marc Hirschi , who's form has been steadily building so far this season. The team in white will be a force to be reckoned with at the Tour de Suisse, but the road will decide which of them will be the leader for UAE Team Emirates.

Primož Roglič

Fresh from his general classification win at the Giro d’Italia, Primož Roglič could return to racing at the Tour de Suisse. Roglič wasn’t initially supposed to be competing here, but it’s unsurprising that Jumbo-Visma want to capitalise on the Slovenian rider’s current run of form. Roglič once again proved his talent as a stage racer at the Giro, timing his form to perfection to snatch the maglia rosa on the penultimate stage with a dominating mountain time trial. It seemed like Roglič was able to build his form through the Giro steadily, reaching his peak when it mattered. This is a good sign for the Tour de Suisse, as it’s likely that he will carry through the form he built over three weeks of hard stage racing into the event, making him a danger to of his competitors.

etappensieger tour de suisse 2023

Generally after Grand Tours, a rider’s physical state can go two ways, they can either soak up the extensive miles and find themselves stronger than ever, or they can feel fatigued and struggle to recover. It will be interesting to see which of these camps Roglič falls into after the Giro and whether he has stayed focused and trained hard after his victory. The Slovenian rider has a strong team around him to support him should he have the legs to go for the win, including Wout van Aert , a rider who is known to be a super-domestique, able to do a job both on the flat and in the high mountains for his teammates. Van Aert will also want his own chances for stage victories though, so Jumbo-Visma will need to manage all their rider’s ambitions carefully.

Jakob Fuglsang

He might not have shown his best form so far in the 2022 season, but Jakob Fuglsang’s history at the Tour de Suisse makes him an important contender for this race. The Dane has finished on the podium three times in this race, including finishing second in both the 2021 and 2022 editions. The route of the Tour du Suisse, which generally is a mix of flat stages, time trials and only a couple of very high days in the mountains, means an all-rounder like Fuglsang can often find themselves in contention for victory. Fuglsang has struggled with injury so far this season and last raced a stage race at the Tour de Hongrie where he secured 11th place overall. This is a respectable comeback for only his second race of the season, and the 38-year-old rider has been spending time at altitude ahead of the Tour de Suisse, which should only bolster his form further.

It’s fair to say that the likes of Roglič and Evenepoel have a better chance of winning than Fuglsang in this race, but his experience and racing knowledge should definitely give the Danish rider an advantage in some situations. He also has a formidable team around him for support, including the likes of Nick Schultz and Dylan Teuns , both of whom might be able to fight for a high GC position themselves, or go for stage wins.

Romain Bardet

Team DSM’s Romain Bardet hasn’t raced since the Tour de Romandie in April, giving himself a long training block ahead of the Tour de Suisse. The Frenchman has been vocal about the Tour de France being one of his key aims for the season, and the Tour de Suisse forms a crucial part of his lead up to that. Speaking to Rouleur earlier this year, Bardet noted that while his form is improving, he doesn’t seem to be achieving the same results, largely because of the rising level in the modern peloton. He explained that everything would need to go perfectly on race day for him to be in contention for victory against the best, but didn’t rule out standing on the top step of the podium again.

etappensieger tour de suisse 2023

It could be that the break Bardet has had from racing in the lead up to the Tour de Suisse will work well for the Frenchman and his seventh place finish at the Tour de Romandie – the last race he competed in – is a sign that Bardet isn’t far from the top level. He was also placing highly on multiple stages in Romandie, getting involved in reduced bunch finishes, which shows the 32-year-old still possesses the hunger to race. Team DSM will come to the Tour de Suisse with some strong climbers to support Bardet, including Marius Mayrhofer who recently had a strong showing in the Giro d’Italia. The team’s attacking style is something they could use to their advantage if some of the bigger favourites are preoccupied with watching each other when the mountains are looming.

Sergio Higuita

With last year’s winner, Geraint Thomas, not taking to the start of the 2023 edition of the Tour de Suisse, Sergio Higuita (who finished in second place) is the best placed rider from last year’s edition also racing in the 2023 Tour de Suisse. Higuita showed in the 2022 edition that he is a supremely talented climber, putting time into the likes of Thomas in the penultimate stage when the climbs hit the steepest and toughest gradients. Higuita lost out in the time trial on the final stage of the race when he finished over one minute down on Evenepoel and Thomas – the race against the clock is not a discipline that suits the small Colombian climber particularly well.

This could also be his downfall in the 2023 edition of the Tour de Suisse, and Higuita will need to make up some time in the mountains ahead of the time trial in order to have a buffer on his rivals going into the final stage. Bora-Hansgrohe’s 20-year-old climber Cian Uijtdebroeks will also be a good support rider for Higuita. Despite his young age, Uijtdebroeks is known to be one of the biggest talents in the peloton, winning the prestigious under-23 race, the Tour de l’Avenir, last year.

We’re betting on Remco Evenepoel to take the victory in the 2023 edition of the Tour de Suisse. His training files on Strava tell us that Covid-19 hasn’t impacted him too heavily so far and he looked unstoppable at the Giro d’Italia before he left the race. The Soudal–Quick-Step rider will be motivated to make the most of the hard work he put in ahead of the Giro d’Italia that he couldn’t put to use and the Tour de Suisse is the perfect race to do this in.

Men’s Tour de Suisse 2023 preview: Everything you need to know

We have everything you need to know (and some things you don't) ahead of the Tour de Suisse, where Evenepoel, Pidcock, and Van Aert are set to star.

What’s that you say? You want more big-time stage racing right now, even with the Critérium du Dauphiné reaching its climactic finale this weekend?

Well, you’re in luck. One big race in June just isn’t enough, and the Tour de Suisse is here to keep us entertained through another week. Kicking off on Sunday June 11 in Einsiedeln, and thus overlapping with the Dauphiné’s last stage, the men’s Tour de Suisse will draw some big names to Switzerland for an always-scenic, always-challenging bike race across eight days in the run-up to the Tour de France. Geraint Thomas won last year’s race en route to his podium performance at the Tour, but he won’t be in attendance this year, leaving it up to someone new to take over the title.

Here’s what you need to know about the upcoming Tour de Suisse.

etappensieger tour de suisse 2023

The route: TTs and Alpine passes abound

The 2023 Tour de Suisse is a race for all-rounders, with a little bit of something for everyone and, unlike the upcoming Tour de France, little patience for climbers who can’t also ride on the aero bars.

Things will get underway with a short time trial. Despite its modest 12.7 km length, the flat race against the clock should have a not-insignificant impact on the overall battle, and of course will also put a rider into the early leader’s jersey. The power TT riders will have an advantage on this profile.

etappensieger tour de suisse 2023

Stage 2 will give the stagehunters, particularly those with a fast finish, a chance to nab a victory on undulating roads. A late Category 3 climb could make things a bit interesting but a sprint, possibly from a somewhat-reduced field, seems likely. From there, it’s onto a trio of challenging climbing stages; this is not a race where contenders can just wait around for the final day or two to achieve their GC goals.

The challenging third stage will take riders over the Cat. 1 Col de Mosses before the especially challenging Cat. 1 finishing climb to Villars-sur-Ollon. The following day, the peloton will take on a stage 4 that features a very flat first half before a demanding final 70 km. A Cat. 1 climb to Crans-Montana (remember the Giro?) and then a quick Cat. 1 will put fatigue in the legs before a grueling finish.

The Tour de Suisse will reach its highest altitude on stage 5, which features the hors categorie Furkapass (to 2,433 meters above sea level) in the early goings, then the Cat. 1 Oberalpass, and then then the HC Albulapass at 2,312 meters before a descent to the line. That last climb will undoubedly have a big impact on the overall battle.

etappensieger tour de suisse 2023

A pair of less mountainous stages follow with more opportunities for fast finishers or punchy attackers before next Sunday’s final TT, another chrono that will favor the specialists and this time one that covers 25.7 km. All told, that’s more TT mileage than is packed into the entire Tour de France this year! In other words, this is a Tour de Suisse for the all-rounders. Climbing and TTing will both be very important, as will the ability to thrive at elevation on a handful of especially high-altitude climbs.

The contenders: Evenepoel and … ?

Note: As of publication time, the start list is still in flux, so we may update this rundown of riders to watch in the next 24 hours.

The GC battle at this Tour de Suisse is shaping up to be somewhat unusual in that none of the top GC favorites are big Tour de France favorites. While the Dauphiné often (but not always) draws the bigger crowd of yellow jersey hopefuls, it has generally seen a Tour contender as its pre-race favorite too, but this year, the biggest name in the overall battle is a rider who is (apparently) not racing the Tour. That would be Remco Evenepoel (Soudal Quick-Step), who left the Giro d’Italia while in the race lead due to COVID-19.

etappensieger tour de suisse 2023

If he’s even mostly fit, Evenepoel is the clear favorite based on the form he showed in Italy before leaving that event. A one-week stage race with two time trials is about as well suited to his talents as you’ll find on the WorldTour calendar. At last year’s race, Evenepoel won the final TT. While the high-altitude mountain climbs are a bit more of a question mark, none of them are so steep or so high as to tip the balance in anyone else’s favor. The real question is whether Quick-Step might consider changing plans if he does, in fact, dominate.

The other question is who else might challenge the young Belgian world champ in the GC battle. Tom Pidcock (Ineos Grenadiers) may be the most interesting name on the start list as he will have an opportunity to show off his GC chops. Thus far in his pro road career, that has not been as much of a focus for him, but his skillset would suggest that there is potential there. Juan Ayuso (UAE Team Emirates) was already great racing in Switzerland once this year – he won a stage at the Tour de Romandie – and he is another potential contender. So are the Colombian duo of Rigoberto Urán (EF Education-EasyPost) and Sergio Higuita (Bora-Hansgrohe).

etappensieger tour de suisse 2023

Then there’s Wout van Aert , who will be starring for Jumbo-Visma, and it’s really anyone’s guess what he decides to get up to this week in the Alps. He is elite against the clock, he is punchy, and we’ve seen him climb with the best on occasion. Given everything else he can do, would anyone be surprised if he bossed the GC (and everything else) in Switzerland? It would be equally unsurprising if he dropped out of GC contention quickly, but at the very least, he’s a potential winner on basically every stage.

There are a few other big names who could be hunting stages (assuming Van Aert lets anyone else win them). Peter Sagan has amassed an incredible 18 career Tour de Suisse stage wins, and after a quiet Classics campaign, he looked OK at the 4 Jours de Dunkerque last month. Arnaud Démare (Groupama-FDJ), Biniam Girmay (Intermarché-Circus-Wanty), and Bryan Coquard (Cofidis) are other fast finishers in attendance, while Stefan Küng (Groupama-FDJ) will be thrilled with the chance to show off his time trialing skills on home roads.

The conversation

To give you a break from the ramblings of just one author, we pulled in another expert (Abby Mickey) to provide some further analysis. Here’s our conversation ahead of the Tour de Suisse …

Dane Cash : OK Abby, let’s get back to the always entertaining big one, big two conversation. Remco Evenepoel at this race … it’s hard for me to see anybody else beating him. But what about Tom Pidcock?

Abby Mickey : I think it will be interesting to see how Remco is doing after COVID. It’s possible it didn’t affect him at all, and it’s possible that it did. In terms of Pidcock, he’s not raced since he took a huge chunk of time off to get ready for bigger targets later on in the summer. I’m curious what his form is like ahead of the Tour, whereas for Evenepoel, Soudal Quick-Step has been clear that Remco is not going to race the Tour. Their form could be in a completely different realm.

DC : Indeed. I’m really interested to see whether Pidcock will be able to climb the way that he kind of has occasionally, but this time as as GC hopeful. There are some high-altitude climbs in this race and I think this will be a cool opportunity to see him up there. He won a stage at Alpe d’Huez at the Tour de France, so obviously he’s a pretty talented climber, but as a GC rider, we haven’t seen him doing much that at the highest level yet. In any case … who else could challenge?

AM : Well, UAE team Emirates has a pretty strong team that they’re taking with Juan Ayuso as their likely leader. He’s going to be a really interesting contender. UAE isn’t a team that’s completely centered around anymore, and it’s probably Ayuso’s main goal, this race, versus some other guys focusing more on the Tour. You’ve got all of these guys with different targets throughout the season that don’t match up. But I think UAE team Emirates has a really strong team around Ayuso too. George Bennett is a really good domestique, you’ve got Jay Vine who is just coming off of the Giro and Finn Fisher-Black is another really interesting rider that I think is a guy to keep an eye on for the future.

DC : With Aysuo, you’ve got a really good time trialist, and this is a race that’s gonna reward people who are good at time trialing. It’s funny, I think this route with the high mountains and the time trials looks a lot more like a traditional Grand Tour than some Grand Tours right now, like the Tour de France, which doesn’t have much TT mileage this year.

AM : Yeah, bookending the race with time trials I think should make for a really interesting race.

As usual, we’ll leave you with a bit of info that you didn’t know you needed to know about the culture and history (ancient, medieval, and modern!) of where this race takes place, Switzerland. In just a few moments’ time, you’ll be able to answer that age-old question: What do a beloved typeface and the fines that riders have to pay for breaking UCI rules have in common?

If you’ve ever looked through the UCI regulations or read communiqués from race officials, you’ll know that riders get fined in Swiss francs for doing various verboten things – and you may have noticed that the the acronym for the Swiss franc is CHF. For example, this week at the Critérium du Dauphiné, Sam Bennett and Dylan Groenewegen were both fined 500 CHF each for irregular sprints. That F is for franc, but have you ever wondered where that CH comes from?

Wonder no more. The acronym comes from “Confoederatio Helvetica,” the Latin name for the “Swiss Confederation.” The Old Swiss Confederacy, initially founded around the year 1300 as a collection of small mostly autonomous states in the Alps, gradually evolved into modern Switzerland, and along the way, it saw increasing usage of the Latin word “Helvetica” (and various derivations in other languages) used as an alternative to the Germanic “Schweiz” descriptor in official contexts – on money, for instance. That Latin name is actually throwback to far older times.

etappensieger tour de suisse 2023

As a Swiss national consciousness began to grow in the late medieval and early modern period, people looked back to the ancient world for inspiration in the naming department, and they found it in the Helvetii, a Celtic people living in the region when ancient Rome entered the scene. Julius Caesar fought against them in the Gallic Wars, and the Romans conquered the region in the first century AD. From there, the Helvetii became increasingly Romanized, until Germanic folks (largely the Alemanni people) started to arrive in the third century, bringing their language with them to at least a large part of the country, which is now home to millions of German speakers and millions of speakers of Romance languages.

When Swiss people began to carve out an identity as an independent state over a thousand years later, they were drawn to the Helvetii as ancient forebears and starting using “Helvetica” in various forms their own name.

Fast forward to the 20th century, and as you may have guessed, a Swiss fellow named Max Miedinger designed a new typeface, first produced in the Swiss town of Münchenstein, that quickly became all the rage. Initially called Neue Haas Grotesk , it was renamed Helvetica by some savvy marketing types, and here we are today, celebrating an ancient Celtic people whenever we use the popular font … or fine riders for peeing in the wrong place or sprinting dangerously.

Enjoy the race!

Tour de Suisse - an intense eight-day Pro WorldTour and cycling fest

6/6/2023 – Lauren Wolff

Tour de Suisse - an intense eight-day Pro WorldTour and cycling fest

The exciting Tour de Suisse, part of the UCI World Tour held from the 11th to the 20th of June, is an ideal test for the pro riders in the peloton to gauge their fitness before the Tour de France two weeks later. Over eight days, the riders will climb over 18,000m and race more than 1,000km, including two time-trial events in this 86th edition. Switzerland will host this prestigious event for the pro riders, as a challenging bucket list event for recreational cyclists in a unique format, a fun ride for kids, and a full-on cycling festival. Tour de Suisse is typically a tour of classic climbs and testing terrain for the pro riders to tackle over difficult distances, and we will also sample just a taste of a few of the stages virtually on ROUVY.

Important locations in the Tour de Suisse

The route begins in the centre of Switzerland with an individual Time Trial and then heads west to the mediaeval cities of Fribourg, Vaud and Valais. The queen stage, or the most demanding day is on Stage 5, over 211 km, and will include 4,700m of brutal climbing, and also:

  • Some of the most spectacular and beautiful parts of the Swiss Alps.
  • Featuring notorious and iconic climbs such as the Furka, Oberalp and Albula.
  • Requiring good descending skills from the riders.

Iconic climbs for the pros

You can read some interesting facts about the Albula Pass, an engineering marvel, before riding it yourself. The riders receive a double dose of the climb as they must also ride up the other side of the pass the following day in the 215 km Stage 6, the longest stage in the event. The route then goes eastwards for the concluding locations in Switzerland's Thurgau and St. Gallen regions. Test your indoor climbing skills on the Albula against the leaderboard on STRAVA .

The women’s Tour de Suisse makes history in 2023

The exciting women's four-day Tour de Suisse UCI pro-stage race, for the first time in its short history, will be held at the highest level UCI Women's World Tour. It follows after Stage 7 of the men's race and makes its way into the country's eastern region with a start in Weinfelden and a finish in the beautiful village of Ebnat-Kappel. The entire women's route will go through the Cantons of Thurgau and St. Gallen and won't include the Swiss Alps but will feature 5,000 metres of climbing over a challenging 327-kilometre course.

Surviving World War 2 - the show must go on!

For many years the Tour de France and Giro d'Italia held the central stage with their well-known beginnings in 1902 and 1909, respectively. The inaugural edition of the Tour de Suisse, took place in 1933, organised by the Swiss Cyclists and MotorCyclists Federation to celebrate their 50th anniversary and support cyclists' sport and legitimacy on Swiss roads.

Initially, only Swiss pros participated in the 'Little Tour de Suisse' event. Half a million spectators arrived to cheer on the first edition of the 5 stage event, with 64 entrants and 46 finishers crossing the finish line in Zurich. At the time, WW2 participants entered the challenging race motivated by the fact that they could make a small living in tough economic times when they experienced persistent food rationing and shortages of cycling spare parts like bicycle tires. The attitude of the event organisers was that cycling event must go on despite the war.

Legends of the TdS over time

In 1949 the organisers of the tour were thrilled to have the four greats of Fausto Coppi (historical footage), Gino Bartali, Hugo Koblet and Ferdy Kübler included in the start list. Other legends who have won stages in this event were Eddy Merckx in 1974 and Sean Kelly, Lance Armstrong and Jan Ulrich in the 1990s. Later, Fabian Cancellara and Peter Sagan (see video footage) made their mark. Sagan has won 17 stages since 2011, a record but never an overall win. He has also won the points classification every year since 2011, apart from 2016. No Swiss National Team will be in the men's starting field this year.

The Tour de Suisse winners jerseys

The winners' jerseys will consist of the winner's yellow jersey, the King and Queen of the Mountains winner's jersey in red and the Sprinter's Points jersey in black. The best young professional rider's jersey is white. Leaders in the young rider classification are usually candidates for the yellow jersey in future grand tours.

TdS 2023 Oberwil to Lieli - Stage 6 with a sting in the tail

Stage 6 over 215 km is one of the pros' toughest and longest days, and they must tackle the iconic Albula Pass before continuing on an up-and-down course until the finish. In this shortened route in ROUVY, you will venture through a mix of flat and rolling sections through beautiful and scenic rural and urban landscapes. Save something for the final 2.45 kilometres up to the finish - a small sting in the tail at 6% average.

Tour de Suisse 2023 Route stage 6: Chur - Oberwil-Lieli

[Underneath you’ll find the original route. The first two paragraphs are taken out of the route and the new start is in Chur, at the beginning of paragraph 3]

The riders climb the Albula Pass from the start. The ascent from La Punt is 8.9 kilometres long and the average gradient sits at 6.8%.

A descent of over 30 kilometres takes the pilots to the second climb of the day. This is a 7.5 kilometres climb at 7.5%. After the KOM sprint in Lenz the route continues to climb at shallow gradients for approximately 6 kilometres.

The riders descend to Chur before entering the second part of the race. This section is 85 kilometres long and mostly flat. The Kerenzerberg is the only hurdle – 5.9 kilometres at 4.5% and with the summit 90 kilometres before the finish.

One could argue that the third part of the route is a hilly race. The first obstacle appears with 55 kilometres to go – it’s a 2.5 kilometres climb at 9.8%. The route continues to go up either up or down, while the finale opens with 15 kilometres left on a 700 metres ramp at 8.8%.

A downhill leads to the base of the climb to Islisberg – 1.4 kilometres at 8.4% – before another downhill ushers in the finish climb. The last 2.5 kilometres rise at 6.7% to the line.

Starting at kilometre 107.2, the Golden Kilometre serves two opportunities to gain time bonuses of 3, 2 and 1 seconds. The first three riders on the line take 10, 6 and 4 seconds.

The race is expected to finish around 16:20 local time (CEST).

In Einsiedeln, the athletes will complete a fast time trial course of 12.7 kilometres. This is not a classic prologue. The stage is a few kilometres too long for that.
