Nalanda Ruins

Allow an hour or two for wandering the extensive ruins at Nalanda – they’re peaceful and well maintained with a parklike atmosphere of clipped lawns and shrubs. The red-brick ruins consist of 11 monasteries and six temples. Most impressive is the Great Stupa, with steps, terraces, monks’ cells and a few intact Gupta-era stupas. It is thought that a huge statue of Buddha once stood atop the building.

A guide (₹150) is a worthwhile investment, though each of the ruins have signboards beside them in English.

It is one of the popular places of heritage in Bihar and among the must include places in the Buddhist Circuit of India that also includes Bodh Gaya, Sarnath, and Lumbini. Nalanda is one of the greatest centers of learning in the ancient kingdom of Magadha (modern-day Bihar) in India. The city houses one of the world's oldest and finest residential universities which itself was an architectural masterpiece. Nalanda was initially a prosperous village that ran past the route of Rajgriha (modern Rajgir) which was then the capital of Magadha. It is said that the Jain Tirthankara, Mahavira, spent 14 rainy seasons at Nalanda. Gautama Buddha too is said to have delivered lectures in this area and one of his two chief disciples, Sariputra, was born in the area. Today, it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Though the Buddha visited Nalanda several times during his lifetime, this famous center of Buddhist learning shot to fame much later, during the 5th-12th centuries AD. The 17th-century Tibetan Lama, states that the Mauryan emperor, Ashoka, built a great temple at Nalanda at the site of Sariputra's chaitya during the 3rd century BCE. However, Nalanda obtained significant fame during the Gupta era, according to the seal found in the name of King Kumaragupta. His successors expanded the empire by building many more monasteries and temples. Post Gupta period, Nalanda flourished under the reign of emperor Harsha. But the place suffered a big blow under the rule of the Pala dynasty when it was plundered and destroyed by the Muslim Mamluk Turkish kings. Later in 1915, the Archaeological Survey of India studied the site and excavated 6 temples and 11 monasteries. The rich past of Nalanda can be ascertained by the fact that scholars from Tibet, China, Turkey, Greece, and Persia and students from far and wide came here to seek knowledge. Nalanda shone on the world map after the Chinese traveler Hieun Tsang came here in the 7th century. The Nalanda University has 'viharas' or monasteries, and 'chaityas' or temples. In addition to this, the complex houses a charming little museum, which has a collection of several original Buddhist stupas, Hindu and Buddhist bronzes, coins, terracotta jars, a sample of burnt rice, etc. Although in ruins, the entire complex presents a pretty picture and is flocked by tourists day in and day out. Besides, Hiuen Tsang Memorial Hall, The Great Stupa, Pawapuri, and Kundalpur are some prominent places to visit in Nalanda. Patna Airport is the nearest airport which is about 90 km from Nalanda. Patna is well connected by flights with all the major cities of India like Hyderabad, Mumbai, Delhi, Lucknow, Kolkata, Jaipur, Ahmedabad, Bangalore, and Varanasi. Nalanda Railway station is well connected by Rajgir, Danapur, Kolkata, and Delhi. About 12 km, Rajgir Railway Station is the major railhead that has well-connected trains from Danapur, Fatuha, Gaya, Bakhtiyarpur, Tilaiya, and Howrah. Nalanda is connected by a good road with Rajgir, Bodh Gaya, Patna, Pawapuri, and Bihar Sharif. There are very few options available in Nalanda to stay. Rajgir is the nearest town that has several accommodation options ranging from budget to standard, and luxury for tourists to stay and explore the nearby places. There are some roadside stalls and eateries near the university & museum that serve veg snacks. October to March is the best time to visit Nalanda when the climate is pleasantly cool and perfect to explore Nalanda. Besides, one can also visit the ancient city of Nalanda during monsoons as the city receives irregular rainfall. The occasional rains seem to add a natural shade to the city as it appears washed and fresh in this season. Avoid visiting summers as it is quite hot and it becomes really difficult to explore the city under the scorching heat of the sun.

Outstanding Universal Value

Brief synthesis

The Archaeological Site of Nalanda Mahavihara is located in the North-eastern state of Bihar, India. Spread over an area of 23 hectares the Archaeological site of Nalanda Mahavihara presents remains dating from circa. 3rd Cen BCE with one of the earliest, the largest of its time and longest serving monastic cum scholastic establishment in Indian Subcontinent from 5th Cen CE - 13th Cen CE before the sack and abandonment of Nalanda in the 13th Century. It includes stupas, chaityas, viharas, shrines, many votive structures and important art works in stucco, stone and metal. The layout of the buildings testifies to the change from grouping around the stupa-chaitya to a formal linear alignment flanking an axis from south to north. The historic development of the property testifies to the development of Buddhism into a religion and the flourishing of monastic and educational traditions.

Criterion (iv): The Archaeological Site of Nalanda Mahavihara established and developed planning, architectural, artistic principles that were adopted later by many similar institutions in the Indian Subcontinent, South Asia and Southeast Asia.

Standardisation of the architecture of viharas and the evolution of temple-like chaitya into Nalanda prototypes manifests the sustained interchange and patronage towards the expansion of physical infrastructure. The quadrangular free-standing vihara of Gandhara period evolved into a complete residential cum-educational infrastructure borrowed by monastic-cities of South Asia such as Paharpur, Vikramshila, Odantapuri and Jagaddala.

Nalanda shows emergence and mainstreaming of a chaitya having quincuxial (five-fold) form. As a reflection and representation of changing religious practices, this new form replaced the traditionally dominant stupa and influenced Buddhist temples in the region.

Criterion (vi): Nalanda Mahavihara, as a centre for higher learning marks the zenith in the evolution of sangharama (monastic establishment) into the earliest higher learning establishment of early medieval India. Its merit-based approach said to have embraced all contemporary sources of knowledge and systems of learning practiced in the Indian subcontinent.

Nalanda remains one of the earliest and longest serving extraordinary institution-builder. Its systems of pedagogy, administration, planning and architecture were the basis on which later Mahaviharas were established. Nalanda continues to inspire modern university establishments in the region like Nava Nalanda Mahavihara, Nalanda University and several others across Asia.

Archaeological remains of Nalanda Mahavihara were systematically unearthed and preserved simultaneously. These are the most significant parts of the property that demonstrate development in planning, architecture and artistic tradition of Nalanda. As evinced by the surviving antiquities, the site is explicit of a scholar's life recorded a monastic cum scholastic establishment.

While the original mahavihara was a much larger complex, all surviving remains of Nalanda present in the property area of 23 hectares comprising 11 viharas and 14 temples, besides many smaller shrine and votive structures, demonstrate amply its attributes such as axial planning and layout along north-south axis, its architectural manifestation and extant building materials and applied ornamental embellishments. Preserved in-situ are the structural remains of viharas and chaityas whose layers of construction show evolution of the respective forms. The positioning of these structures over the extent of the site shows the planned layout unique to Nalanda. The property also retains a corpus of moveable and immoveable artefacts and artistic embellishments that show iconographic development reflecting changes in Buddhist belief system.

Archaeological remains including the entire protected area of the property are maintained by the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI). The buffer zone of the property is sparsely populated with agricultural land and seasonal water bodies and thus poses no threat to the property. The property and the buffer zone are protected by a national-level law, the Ancient Monument and Archaeological Sites and Remains Act (AMASR), 1958 and (Amendment and Validation, 2010) and is monitored by the National Monument Authority (National level) and office of the District Commissioner, State Government of Bihar (local level).

Authenticity

In subsurface condition for over seven centuries the archaeological remains of Nalanda Mahavihara were systematically excavated in the early 20th Cen. CE and conserved in-situ by the Archaeological Survey of India. Methodology adopted by the Archaeological Survey of India for the conservation and consolidation of its viharas and temples ensured the preservation of its historic fabric through adequate capping by reversible and sacrificial layers and providing supports wherever necessary. All conservation works and interventions are documented through photographs and drawings and published in the annual reports of ASI.

Historical research should be continued, supported by appropriate documentation, with particular attention to the identification of all excavation works carried out before the Archaeological Survey of India, as well as excavations by any other parties of the property, and the identification of all repair works carried out throughout the site, with particular attention to the repairs of brickwork and the documentation of the differentiation of authentic archaeological fabric and added repairs and added capping and sacrificial layers, some of which are marked by way of inscription of dates on select bricks at inconspicuous locations.

Nalanda's layers of construction, iconography and records testify these remains to be its oldest surviving parts. The spatial organization evident in these excavated remains demonstrate its systematic planning. Temple-like form of chaityas and quadrangular-form of viharas replete with infrastructure authenticate Nalanda's contribution in developing sacred architecture of the Buddhists and residential-cum-scholastic facilities. Its stucco, stone and metal art retain iconographic features that enabled changes in Buddhist belief system and transition of Mahayana to Vajrayana.

Ceasing functionally as an institution (13th century CE), Nalanda's role as an institutionbuilder is testified by the borrowing of its system of organization by later Mahaviharas of the 8th century CE. Nalanda's system of pedagogy is best preserved in Tibetan monasteries where discourses are conducted through debate and dialectics. Furthermore, universities across Asia consider Nalanda the landmark of academic learning excellence.

Protection and management requirements

The property is owned, protected, maintained and managed by Archaeological Survey of India vide national level laws - the Ancient Monuments and Sites Remains Act of 1958 (Amendment and Validation, 2010) Decisions pertaining to its conservation and management are governed by National Conservation Policy for Monuments, Archaeological Sites and Remains promulgated by the Archaeological Survey of India.

Conservation and management of the property is ordained by a perspective plan and an annual conservation programme. An in-house committee of the Archaeological Survey of India monitors its state of conservation and conducts need-analysis. A conservation plan for the excavated remains of the property should be worked out for the safeguarding of its Outstanding Universal Value and authenticity. This apart, plans for visitor should be developed to strengthen approaches to visitor management and interpretation. Also the risk preparedness plan should be completed.

The buffer zone is also managed by the National Monument Authority vide Ancient Monument and Archaeological Sites and Remains Act (AMASR), 1958, (Amendment and Validation, 2010) in consultation with National Monument Authority (NMA), New Delhi and the State Government of Bihar. The buffer zone also has facilities to augment visitor's experience.

The Integrated Master Plan of Nalanda should be prepared and implemented by the State Government of Bihar, keeping in mind national and regional laws, to mitigate concerns by any development in the vicinity of the property that may impact its Outstanding Universal Value. And a Heritage Impact Assessment (HIA) should be conducted for any development plans within the vicinity of the property, which are vetted by the competent authorities, Archaeological Survey of India, State Government of Bihar and Nalanda's District Collectorate's Office.

Nalanda – ancient seat of learning in bihar.

Nalanda, along with Bodh Gaya was one of the primary attractions for me to do a Bihar trip. The place just invokes a sense of pride and intrigue at the same time. The ancient global seat of learning, extremely well-planned premises that housed more than 10,000 students. And a place that lived for more than 700 years before it was brought down. It is also a place introduced to us by the writings of travelers like Huan Tsang and I-Tsing.

Nalanda University

Nalanda – Giver of Knowledge

1600 year old red bricks that still look new

The word Nalanda is composed of the Sanskrit words Nal and Da meaning the giver of knowledge, a well-thought-out name. As you enter the well-maintained ruins, which still have a fair percentage of 1600-year-old red bricks, an overwhelming sense overtakes you. You suddenly find yourself walking the path walked by the scholars once. Get to look at their places of learning something like the lecture halls today, their dormitories, and their wells.

You see how the students and teachers lived together and pursued joint learning. Walk around and see the various generations of the same building built by successive generations of rulers.

You see long Chullahs and wonder if they were used to cook food or if they were a part of the chemical laboratories. You see a row of temples, all of them in ruins. But still have the elegance of a wise old man who has given up all the ornamentation but you cannot take away the glow of knowledge.

Nalanda – Ancient Global Seat of Learning

Part of an ancient laboratory

There is a long row of what looks like hostels and departments of Nalanda University. According to texts, there were 108 units in the University of which only 11 have been discovered. Each unit has a hall, about 30 rooms, a couple of bathrooms, and a well. Rooms had beds, bookshelves, and a niche to keep idols or other belongings. There are single and double rooms. And across a wide passage is another row that has temples.

It is assumed that most of these temples are Buddhist , but there are enough Hindu sculptures also. What you see most prominently is the empty niches, which obviously had some nice idols adorning them. Peeping out from bare walls here and there are the ornate designs, a lot of them in the typical shape of a Chaitya.

Ancient Structures

There are stone bases of pillars that might have stood steady on them and now only tell tales of their once-upon-a-time existence. The drainage system is still working and drains out all the rainwater even today. There are platforms that were meant for exercising and meditation. There are votive stupas and miniature shrines all around the main shrines and temples. These may have been added at different points in time by the devotees or they have been placed here post-excavation.

Even the small stupas have some plaster remaining at their bases and domes that tell about their original ornate state. In some stupas, the shape of the bricks has been molded to give some geometric and some auspicious shapes.

Historical Place in Bihar

There are only two stone pillars that I could see in the whole premises. There is evidence that these buildings were constructed during different periods of history and a lot of times one above the other. Excavators found images in stone, stucco, and bronze from here. All the excavated images can be seen in the ASI museum across the road from the ruins. An interesting discovery is the burnt rice that is about 900 years old from a granary.

Remains of smaller stupas

The range of subjects studied at this heritage university included theology, logic, philosophy, medicine, astronomy, grammar, and metaphysics. Students came from far and wide and studied here and took back their knowledge to their respective countries. Some, like Huan Tsang, were wise enough to document the life and times of Nalanda. Otherwise, we may not have known this beautiful part of our history and heritage.

But for these writings, we may have been guessing about these ruins just the way we are still guessing about the ruins of the Indus Valley. Texts say that this university was spread over an area of more than 10 sq. km or so. As of now, only about 1 sq. km has been excavated and ruins restored.

I wonder how it would be to see the whole university recreated before our eyes. It is said that when students came here for admission, the gatekeepers who were also very knowledgeable people tested them at the university gate. Only if the aspirants passed the test were they admitted to the university.

Nalanda University Libraries

Ruins of Nalanda

It is said that there were three big libraries in this center of education and none of them have been located so far in the excavations. These were called Ratna Sagar, Ratna Ranjika, and Ratna Uday the first one being 9 storeyed. All these were burnt in a fire following the attack by Muslim invader Khilji. The signs of fire can be seen here and there on the walls. But some of the walls are exceptionally clean and would give an impression of having been constructed very recently. The buildings were also destroyed in an earthquake.

And were apparently covered by soil and mud and lived underneath till they were again excavated in the 20th Century. As libraries, the main gates of the university are also yet to be discovered.

Pot made with baked bricks

There is a palm tree with eight branches, which is unusual as the palm tree has a single branch. the Buddhist tend to believe that this is representative of the Buddha.

Sariputra’s Stupa, Nalanda

Sariputra's Stupa

The oldest part of this campus is Sariputra’s stupa which was built during the time of Ashoka. Sariputra was born here and he died here and was one of the most prominent disciples of Buddha. Unfortunately, you cannot go close to this stupa now, though this is the most well-known face of these ruins. It seems the temple is as much below the ground as it is above the ground today as this was built in 7 phases. To me, even in ruins, this heritage place exhibits grace and glory .

Nalanda Museum is small but beautiful. Like every other museum, I wish there was more documentation or a guide to explain the artifacts.

Huan Tsang Memorial at Nalanda

Huan Tsang aka Xuan Zang - The Chinese traveler

The Huan Tsang aka Xuan Zang Memorial is the new landmark in Nalanda. It is an impressive and huge building built in memory of Nalanda’s best-known scholar and teacher. The memorial takes you through the life of Huan Tsang through a series of wall paintings. The plaques will tell you more about him. A map traces his journeys across the civilizations.

As you enter through the simple but nicely designed gate, a life-size statue of the traveler in his typical pose welcomes you. The hall has another of his huge statue in black. When you stand there, you feel grateful to the man for providing the link between you and your history. Some samples from his writings have been put as bullets at the back of the memorial.

But what was missing was a book that you can bring back with you to read what he wrote about this city and the life thereof.

World Heritage Site?

Nalanda is not yet on the world heritage site list. But I strongly believe that it should be right there. I also recommend a visit to this heritage, it is a place, which is very difficult to describe in words or even in pictures. You have to be there to see and feel it for yourself. After visiting this heritage, my desire to see Taxila has increased manifold, I wish I am able to go and see that sometimes.

8 Best Tourist Attractions In Nalanda, Bihar

' src=

Nalanda is a town having a pivotal role in ancient India, its culture, and civilization. India’s quest for knowledge and the establishment of a university happened in this city. It was also the center of Buddhist believers and has a bunch of prominent monasteries in it.

The city is currently located in the state of Bihar, India. There is historical evidence talking about the culture and history of the city starting from the 6 th Century BCE to the 5 th Century BCE. Apart from the religion of Buddha, the Jain and Mahavira worshippers are also found in the city. It is also said that the philosopher called Nagarjuna carried out his academic research about the civilization of the city as early as the 2 nd or 3 rd Century AD.

Archaeological Survey of India still finds the place quite potential enough to unveil unlimited historical facts about the place in particular and India in general. Harshavardhana, the ruler of Kanauj is found to have done significant contributions to the construction of Buddhist monasteries during the earlier days.

8 Best Tourist Attractions In Nalanda, Bihar

The city enjoyed a cosmopolitan culture from the earlier days and this is proved by the evidence hinting at the rule of Xuanzang, a Chinese pilgrim who once visited the city. It was the Muslim attacks estimated to have happened during 1200 AD that caused the collapse of the city. You can enjoy the city and take an overwhelming tour of it if you are fond of exploring and dissecting history, facts, and legends. Some of the places which would help you with this are listed below.

Table of Contents

Surya Mandir

Surya Mandir

This is a pilgrim destination in the religious and intellectual city of Nalanda. You can visit the place without many complications since it is located near the famous landmark of the city, Nalanda University. According to Hindu mythology and belief systems, Sun is worshipped as a God to which this temple has been devoted.

Even though the main deity in the temple is the Sun God, you can also find shrines allotted to various other deities in the temple. And the most important fact is that these deities belong to both the Hindu and Buddhist belief systems. This might have happened due to the Buddhist supremacy that has been in the city ever since the BCE days.

Another important marvel to witness in the temple complex of Surya Mandir is an idol that embodies Goddess Parvathi. This idol has a height of 5 feet. If you would like to enjoy the festive moods of the temple, try planning your visit to the Hindu religious months of Vaishakha and Kartika. During these months, a Chatth Puja will be conducted in the temple. Unlike most of the other temples that have an annual frequency, this is held two times a year.

Pawapuri, Nalanda

One of the most sacred pilgrim locations for the Jain believers in the nation and also for the international tourists who believe in the system. This is the place of death of Lord Mahavira, the most important figure in the religion of Jainism. The cremation customs of Mahavira happened in the Jal Mandir.

This place has now become a tourist attraction for its white marble temple. There is also a pond nearby the location. Apart from its religious significance, there is much more to see and enjoy in this location. So you can visit the location even if you are not into any pilgrimage. You will get the chance to explore and observe many constructions and structures which might probably be the oldest in entire India.

You better choose the months from October to April to visit the location of Pawapuri. This time is suggested to enjoy the place in nice and pleasant weather conditions making your stroll comfortable and easy. But if you are curious about the historic relevance and cultural significance of the place for a scholarly purpose you don’t have to wait for the perfect months to come. You are not supposed to commit any sins in this sacred land of Lord Mahavira helping it attain the title of “sinless town”.

Nav Nalanda Mahavira

Nav Nalanda Mahavira

Since the city of Nalanda has the pride of being an ancient intellectual town, the Government of India tried to bring back that glory by establishing a university in the location in the year of 1951.

The first president of India, Rajendra Prasad was the political leader who initiated the establishment of this university. This is an institute that will offer an opportunity to learn about the historical and religious nuances of Buddhism and the Jain Lord Mahavira. During the formative years, the institution was a residential university. Even during those early years, the university had domestic and foreign students who enrolled in the courses offered.

The institution got credited with the Deemed University title in the year of 2006. Tibetan history, Ancient History and Culture, Philosophy, Pali, Archaeology, and some of the prominent linguistic domains are the courses offered by the university.

The geographical location of the university is quite picturesque with the proximity of the river, Indrapuskarani. The university also became the venue for the “First Global Buddhist Conference” which happened in the year, 2021. During the eve, Dalai Lama paid a visit to the university. There are two buildings in the university inaugurated by him.

The Great Stupa

The Great Stupa, Nalanda

The Great Stupa is a historical structure built by the order of the Mauryan emperor, Ashoka. The Stupa was built as a commemoration of the Buddhist follower, Sariputra. He was a lucky and devoted follower of Lord Buddha and got blessed with salvation by his lord after years of pure and divine dedication. It is said that the Great Stupa hides one of the bones in the body of Sariputra. There are a lot of steps and flights integrated into the structure of the Stupa.

This intricate building mastery is a marvel for the domestic and international tourists visiting the city in the modern days. Reports say that these Stupas were brought to perfection by multiple attempts. Some of them failed and some of them met the expectations of the emperor. The ruins of those structures can be easily found in the location.

Excavations are continuing to unearth more historical facts about the region. The date of construction of the Stupa is estimated to be the 3 rd Century. The shape of the Stupa seems like a magnificent pyramid. The location of the Great Stupa is included in the list of World Heritage Sites by the International organization, UNESCO.

The seven layers of the Stupa has got multiple cultural, religious, and historic connotations to it. Passages from the holy texts of Buddhism are also found in the construction of the Stupa. It is also believed that this Stupa has the ashes of the body of Lord Buddha in them. Scenes and visuals from the Jataka tales are also inscribed in these Stupas. Apart from religious importance, the art used for the construction can be remarked as exemplary.

Nalanda Archaeological Museum

Nalanda Archaeological Museum

This is one of the most treasured locations in the entire city of Nalanda. The maintenance responsibility of the museum is completely assigned to the Archaeological Survey of India. 1971 is the establishment year of this museum. A lot of eventful excavations have happened in the locations that unearthed facts and records about the monastery and university complex that was active in the city during the early years.

Artifacts that belong to the period of the 5 th century to the 12 th century have been collected from various locations in the city and preserved in the location. If you would like to encapsulate and experience the rich cultural heritage of the city of Nalanda in a single visit, the Nalanda Archaeological Museum can be the go-to place for it. Objects and historical truths excavated from the remote villages in the Nalanda city and Rajgir are also added to the vast collection in the museum.

Nalanda University

Nalanda University

Being listed in the list of World Heritage Sites of UNESCO, the heritage pride and prestige of this ancient university and its location is extraordinary. The ancientness of the university is not just the greatest in the country of India but probably in the whole world.

The university was known by the name of Nalanda Mahavira during its functional years. 3 rd century can be the establishment period of the university. This was not just a university but a magnificent Buddhist monastery. The university is now in its ruins. However, the authorities are much keen on preserving the ruins with due attention and care owing to their international significance in culture and history.

Hiuen Tsang’s travelogues have got a mention about this historic university complex. Many great Indian epics and legends also mark the prominent presence of such a university in the location. Harshavardhana and Ashoka, the emperors of then India have also given their contributions to enhancing the importance and grandeur of the university. There are a couple of Viharas and temples that were built in the complex according to their orders.

The attack initiated by Bakhtiyar Khilji was the reason for the dilapidation of this great university complex in India. The attack dates to the 12 th century. Chinese and Tibetan cultures testify to the university as a center of Vedic learning that was highly advanced in the entire world.

Hiuen Tsang Memorial Hall

Hiuen Tsang Memorial Hall

This is also a place you can visit when you take your one of the sure visits to Nalanda University. As the name suggests the hall is built in memory of the Chinese traveler and scholar named, Hiuen Tsang who once visited the university and stayed in the location for a while. He came to the university to take up his course there.

Later on after the completion of his course, he stayed back in the university by taking up the profession of a university teacher. You can reach this hall by taking a stroll from Nalanda University which is around 1.3km away from the hall. Jawaharlal Nehru, the prior Prime Minister of India, once got a biography of Xuanzang which inspired him to build something as a monument for Hiuen Tsang.

This led to the ordering of the establishment in the year 1957. The establishment of the hall intensified the cultural harmony and relationship between the two countries viz. India and China. The construction was done and dusted in the year, 1984.

Rajgir

The village is believed to be 3000 years old according to the studies and research conducted by scholars and excavators in the region. When you visit this quaint location, remember to understand the place in its two segments. The first segment is credited to king Ajathashatru, a Magadha emperor.

The other segment is a formation created by the 7 major hills of the town. Mahabharata, the holy text of Hinduism has got mentions in this city. Several sacred Jain scriptures also include a similar mention. Major excavations are still being carried out in the town stressing the careful preservation of the place. Such excavations have contributed many artifacts and truths that throw light on the culture and history of the nation. Best time to visit Nalanda

You might have understood that Nalanda is all about structures, constructions, temples, and a lot more. Being located in the state of Bihar, the climate in the region can be absolutely hostile during the months of summer and monsoons.

Nalanda Tourism

Nalanda, founded in the 5th century is a city in Bihar and is known for being one of the world's ancient universities with Jain and Buddhist learning. According to the history Gautam Buddha and Jain Thirthankara, a Mahavira, stayed in Nalanda University to deliver lectures and spread the learnings of Buddhism and Jainism respectively. Nalanda is a part of UNESCO World Heritage Site due to its archaeological artefacts, sculptures and paintings.

Chinese pilgrim and Korean pilgrim visited Nalanda (in two different eras) to learn Buddhism and yogacharam from the masters in the monastery. To understand the traditional way of learning, these pilgrims were taught grammar, Sanskrit, logic and other learning. Traces of these learning can be found in Museums in China and Korea. The ruin of Nalanda still showcases the traces of Gupta era monasteries with traditional Indian designs on the stones (traditional Indian stone carving statues). When Nalanda was attacked by the Muslim Raids, it is said that most of the learnings were destroyed by them as they burnt the books along with the libraries in the university. It is also said that it took 6 months for the Muslim raid to burn the books present at the university.
