Critic Reviews for Journey 2: The Mysterious Island
Audience reviews for journey 2: the mysterious island.
What's interesting about this standard adventure tale is how it tells it's story: the barest bones of construction, and only the points you are already well versed with (from all the other adventure tales they've "borrowed" from) to get to the point quickly. Quite literally they find a "secret map written in code" and decipher the thing in less than 5 minutes, and then "it's off to the island!". Everything happens fast, and everyone's only playing a cliche, and so after a minute it becomes cool simply watching the race to the end. Should I tell you "no surprises here"? If I did, that would be the only surprise of this feature.
Better than the first mostly due to the fact that the cast were more likeable and the story wasn't as cheesy, It's still cheesy but it's fun, The effects were ok but some looked pretty bad in places, I can't comment on the 3D as I watched the 2D version but just like the first it looked like it would be good in 3D, The story was predictable but fun and most of all my kids enjoyed it and that's the films target audience so it's hard to be too critical.
I just finished watching on my cable this science fiction adventure comedy directed by Brad Peyton. This is a sequel to Journey to the Center of the Earth, and is based on another Jules Verne novel, this time The Mysterious Island. Very unusual cast stars Dwayne Johnson, Michael Caine, Josh Hutcherson, Vanessa Hudgens, Luis Guzmán, and Kristin Davis. The story was written by Richard Outten, Brian Gunn and Mark Gunn, and the screenplay by Brian and Mark Gunn. This movie became a box office success with a worldwide gross of nearly $326 million, surpassing its predecessor, I think mainly because of the 3D technology. The story is happening four years since the events of the first movie, and starts with the 18-year-old Sean Anderson (Josh Hutcherson) involved in a chase with the police which ended with him driving into a swimming pool. His step-father Hank (Dwayne Johnson) arrives and later discovers that Sean had broken into a satellite research centre in order to boost the signal of a code he'd received by someone he suspects is Alexander Anderson, Sean's grandfather who had been missing for two years. Wanting to bond with his stepson the next day, Hank helps Sean decipher the code of Jules Verne and makes a map from the three books in the coded letter with the coordinates to its location. All they need to do now is to convince Sean's mother to let the both of them go in search of the island. This is a film with very likable characters and actors in an adventure which could excite the younger audience, but not too exciting for the older. It is moving quickly but parts of the story almost seemed unrelated at some moments. Directing seemed done without any motivation... that doesn't mean it was bad, but wasn't very noticeable. If you want to spend a night with a family watching something which is semi-sweet and very colourful, give it a go!
Journey to ridiculous. But nice visuals/SFX. The Rock delivers the same crappola performance he's famous for...sadly.

To 3D Or Not To 3D: Buy The Right Journey 2: The Mysterious Island Ticket
Back in 2010, when 3D was still a fresh, new idea and was constantly being misused, we published a feature titled "The 10 Best 3-D Movies And What Hollywood Can Learn From Them". In the editorial, Josh, Katey and I wrote about the 3D films that we thought best utilized the technology. One of those films was 2008’s Journey to the Center of the Earth . Now, four years later, that movie’s sequel is arriving in theaters. Will its 3D be as effective as it was the first time?
Using our tried-and-true method of judging 3D movies, I have run Journey 2: The Mysterious Island through our categorical test to explain why the movie is or isn’t worth the money required to for the extra experience. Read on to find out what I thought.
Does It Fit?
CGI and 3D are the best of buds. If filmmakers have the ability to digitally construct a large amount of the environment in which the character inhabit, the better they can use 3D to its maximum potential (it’s also why computer-generated animation looks so great). Similarly, adventure films are great for the new technology because there is plenty of the way it allows the director to make better use of the space on screen and show off what they can do. As a result, Journey 2: The Mysterious Island is a brilliant fit for 3D.
Fit Score: 5/5
Planning & Effort
Unlike the other 3D movie that is being released this weekend, Journey 2 was always intended to be seen in the third dimension. Rather than being post-converted, director Brad Peyton filmed all of his new movie using stereoscopic cameras to create the best 3D environments possible (same as he did for Journey to the Center of the Earth ). When it comes to planning and effort the movie gets perfect marks, as there was never a question in anyone’s mind that this wouldn’t be a 3D film.
P&E Score: 5/5
Before the Window
CINEMABLEND NEWSLETTER
Your Daily Blend of Entertainment News
In these reviews, “Before The Window” refers to how a 3D movie is able to capitalize on the ability to fire things off the screen and practically into the audiences’ lap. Some people look down on it because they see it as the gimmicky side of 3D, but we see it as taking advantage of everything the technology has to offer. Sadly, in this department Journey 2 isn’t very successful. Sure, there are a few times where Peyton does decide to freak the audience out a bit (the most memorable being a giant centipede shooting out at the audience), but for the most part the movie doesn’t do everything that it can with the 3D tech.
Before the Window Score: 3/5
Beyond the Window
Because of the large scale CGI environments, you’d think that Journey 2 would set itself up to be the new standard for depth in 3D. Unfortunately, it doesn’t really succeed. While the wide shots – particularly those that show off a lot of the island - do a solid job of maximizing depth, most of the movie can’t keep it up. A big part of this has to do with the fact that many of the scenes are set in dense jungle, and when there is so much stuff filling the screen, it’s hard to see into the screen any further than what would be available in 2D. When Peyton does set up a shot to maximize the audience’s sense of depth he does it well, but there’s really not enough of it to call it “excellent.”
Beyond the Window Score: 3/5
The experience of watching a 3D movie has a similar effect to wearing sunglasses indoors in that low light levels can basically leave you blind. Since the 3D boom returned, filmmakers have been trying to compensate by ratcheting the brightness levels in their movies to 11. Sometimes this doesn’t work, sometimes it does. In the case of Journey 2 it’s largely successful. There are some scenes, particularly those set at night or underwater, that look like they are being projected with a grease-covered lens, but for the most part the movie is bright and shiny, perfect for 3D.
Brightness Score: 4/5
The Glasses Off Test
The 3D effect is created when two simultaneous images are displayed on screen, one to be registered by your right eye and one to be registered by your left eye. These images are corrected when wearing the glasses and create the 3D effect, but if you don’t have them on, the screen makes it look like you’re seeing double…or at least it should. When watching movies that utilize 3D perfectly, you have to keep your glasses on or everything will appear blurry. Conversely, poor 3D without the glasses makes you wonder why you shelled out the extra $4. Journey 2 falls somewhere in the middle. There were some scenes where I took off my glasses and could barely make out the shape of a tree, while during others I could make out the images perfectly. If you haven’t already noticed the pattern here, Brad Peyton’s film is very hit-or-miss when it comes to 3D.
Glasses Off Test: 3/5
Audience Health
This is a somewhat subjective category, as some people are simply more negatively affected by 3D than others, but there are steps that a director can take to minimize the ill-effects of 3D. People tend to get headaches and feel sick when focal points aren’t established and the audience is forced to constantly search the screen for exactly what they are supposed to be looking at. Fortunately, Journey 2 doesn’t have this problem. While it should be noted that I rarely feel sick during 3D movies, I never felt the slightest bit queasy or headache-y while watching the movie.
Health Score: 5/5
Final Verdict: This is a first for us here at Cinema Blend. We have a weekend in which two 3D movies are being released and they managed to get the exact same score in our 3D tests. Journey 2: The Mysterious Island isn’t a breathtaking experience by any means, but director Brad Peyton has done a solid job creating a 3D environment. Those expecting what they saw in Journey To The Center of the Earth may be disappointed, but if you’re going to see the sequel it won’t hurt to shell out the extra cash.

Journey 2: The Mysterious Island - 3D
The new journey begins when Sean receives a coded distress signal from a mysterious island where no island should exist - a place of strange life forms, mountains of gold, deadly volcanoes, and more than one astonishing secret. Unable to stop him from going, Sean's new stepfather (Dwayne Johnson, Walking Tall) joins the quest. Together with a helicopter pilot (Luis Guzmán, Boogie Nights) and his beautiful, strong-willed daughter (Vanessa Hudgens, Sucker Punch), they set out to find the island, rescue its lone inhabitant (Michael Caine, The Dark Knight), and escape before seismic shockwaves force the island under the sea and bury its treasures forever.
Storyline: Our Reviewer's Take
'Journey 2' tries to do and be a great many things in a short amount of time. How well it succeeds at any of them makes the difference between it being a fun and exciting thrill ride for the whole family or one of the tamest and most vapid voyages into seemingly dangerous territory. After suffering through 90-minutes of very much PG-rated action, I'm leaning heavily towards the latter, which I admit is largely my fault for expecting a bit more than what is seen in previews. And unless you're so young as to be frightened by the sight of ginormous red ants lifting trees by their roots or prehistoric electric eels the size of a house, I'm guessing you'll probably feel the same.
As a loose sequel to 2008's ' Journey to the Center of the Earth ' with Brendan Fraser, the family comedy tries to recapture the same audience which made the first movie a hit. It succeeded for the most part and shockingly surpassed its predecessor at the box office by a fairly decent margin, guaranteeing a second sequel in the near future, which is already hinted at by film's end anyways. In spite of making more money, the story is less funny and not the least bit exciting, which I would argue is quite a challenge given how terrible the first movie actually is. The extent of the humor ranges from Luis Guzmán acting the clown, the presence of giant bird poop, and bouncing berries off of Dwayne Johnson's pulsating pecs. And those are the moments I found myself chuckling.
As some kind of heart-warming family adventure, the movie tries to insert a dramatic subplot that sees Sean's (Josh Hutcherson) hokey bad-boy persona at odds with his well-to-do, well-intentioned stepfather, Hank (Johnson), but apparently, the filmmakers' definition of a problem teen is a straight-A student who's smart enough to break into a satellite research center so he can boost his radio signal. In the first minutes, we quickly surmise Sean is a completely ungrateful, off-putting little jerk. You know the cliché: boy hates his stepdad for no genuine reason. When we meet his grandfather (Michael Caine), we also realize where he gets his ugly attitude. Essentially, as far as the filmmakers see it, acting unappreciative, annoying and insulting strangers like grandpa does signifies family troubles. There's no surprise where this is going, especially when it's clear Hank makes a fantastic father. Indeed, it only makes the journey that more mind-numbingly boring and frustrating to watch.
As a sci-fi fantasy, the closest we come to science-fiction is Captain Nemo's legendary submarine, Nautilus , and the fantasy aspect is pretty much the result of a weak imagination. As harsh as that may sound, it's a fair assessment since we're talking about a story where adventurers discover an island with so many possibilities. It's reasonable to expect something a tad more fanciful than everyday creatures simply turned monstrous, or perchance exploring the island a bit longer than a couple days. There's never a feeling that the group, which includes Guzmán's goofy helicopter pilot and Vanessa Hudgens as his daughter, is ever in any real mortal danger, and not once was I swept away by the adventure. The chase with the colossal lizard is more of a light jog, and the aerial dogfight with the enormous bees is a cross between 'Return of the Jedi' and 'Honey, I Shrunk the Kids' and none of the fun.
'Journey 2: The Mysterious Island' toys with many of our childhood imaginations — stranded on an exotic island like the 'Swiss Family Robinson' or 'Robinson Crusoe' but with overgrown creatures. In fact, this adventure is sparked not only by Verne's classic 1874 novel, but also by Stevenson's Treasure Island and Swift's Gulliver's Travels — all beloved childhood favorites. The early sequence where they discover the secret map is probably the movie's most clever aspect, other than figuring a way to erase Fraser's memory from the story. The problem comes from director Brad Peyton, whose only other filmmaking duties of note is 'Cat & Dogs: The Revenge of Kitty Galore,' unable to make the expedition into the fantastically unknown something thrilling or rousing. Instead, he treats the entire film like a five-dollar tour on Guzmán's rickety, dilapidated helicopter.
The Blu-ray: Vital Disc Stats
Warner Home Video brings 'Journey 2' to Blu-ray as a three-disc combo pack with a code for an UltraViolet digital copy. The first two Blu-rays are Region Free, BD50 discs with one the 3D version while the second is the 2D release with all the supplements. Inside a regular blue keepcase with a lenticular slipcover is also DVD-9 copy. After a promo trailer for Warner 3D, viewers are taken to a rather ugly main menu window with a photo still and music.
Video Review
Much like its 2D counterpart, the journey to 'Mysterious Island' improves dramatically with a stunning video presentation. Shot natively in digital 3D, the MVC encode looks practically flawless, taking advantage of the technology in several scenes, especially while on the island. Some visual tricks tend to feel like obvious gimmicks, but thankfully, they never detract from the enjoyment of the picture quality. The most notable moment is Hutcherson and Guzmán bouncing berries off of Johnson's gyrating pecs. In fact, it's pretty amusing seeing the little red balls jump out of the screen. Other sequences are put to better use, such as the bee ride and the gang's escape from giant birds. The actors and CG creatures often float in midair, independent of their surroundings.
When filmmakers are not pushing such stunts, the picture displays some fairly amazing depth with terrific separation between objects. The 3D camerawork is employed with appreciable subtlety, focused on generating a three-dimensional that's surprisingly immersive. Unfortunately, it's not always consistent as several sequences, especially during the darker, poorly-lit segments, the image appears a bit flatter than others. It's not a complete loss, however, since a majority of the presentation has background information penetrate deep into the screen. The walkthrough in the city of Atlantis is particularly impressive with a great pop-up book feel to it and characters genuinely seem to wander around in the distance.
Presented in its original 1.85:1 aspect ratio, the freshly-minted transfer is razor-sharp and squeaky-clean from beginning to end. Fine lines around foliage, local wildlife and the architecture of the ancient civilization are very distinct and detailed. Pores, wrinkles and other trivial blemishes are apparent while hair and clothing are clearly outlined. The rest of the cinematography displays lush, sumptuous primaries and an extensive array of vivid secondary hues, giving the family comedy a pulsating, animated quality that leaps off the screen. Contrast is vibrant and pitch-perfect with brilliant, clean whites while black levels are inky rich and luxurious, providing the image with plenty of pop and a great deal of depth. In the end, the high-def video is simply astounding.
Audio Review
Although the audio doesn't quite match the visuals — meaning, it's not as equally impressive — the DTS-HD Master Audio soundtrack is still pretty enjoyable, especially when the group arrives on the island. Discrete effects are employed often to enhance the soundfield and generate some decent ambience. Action sequences, in particular, provide nice moments with good panning and directionality. The problem is the design never feels immersive or convincing and given the movie's setting, it's fair to expect a bit more from the rear activity to surround and pull viewers into the scenery.
The rest of the lossless mix delivers clean, precise vocals in the center of the screen and excellent channel separation. But much like the surrounds, the fronts are not all that striking or exciting despite coming with a nice, broad imaging and lots of off-screen commotion. The mid-range is detailed and for the most part full-bodied, yet the upper frequencies are never pushed very hard and the soundstage can be sometimes feel somewhat narrow and limited. Low bass is adequate with good depth in a few scenes although it's nothing that will give the system a lengthy workout.
All things considered, the high-rez track is satisfying and ample enough for a light family comedy.
Special Features
Two supplements which can also be found on the DVD release.
- Gag Reel (HD, 1 min) — The usual footage of the cast flubbing their lines, missteps and having some fun on set.
- Deleted Scenes (HD, 6 min) — Five trivial scenes that add nothing to the overall plot.
'Journey 2: The Mysterious Island' is a loose sequel to 2008's 'Journey to the Center of the Earth,' minus the Fraser. Despite being a slightly bigger hit than the first movie, this family fantasy adventure is less funny and less exciting than the its predecessor, but the arduous journey to see it through to the end is just as grueling and tiresome. There is very little sense of adventure or excitement in its entire 90-minute runtime. The Blu-ray, however, arrives with a stunning 3D presentation and excellent audio. While supplements are the same as the DVD release, one small interactive exclusive adds a bit of fun to the package, making it a decent purchase for the little ones in the family.

Scores are on par with what I expected. Great review as always Ralph.
Mediocre at best and the special effects were somewhat ok.
Family loves the original Journey so this will be a blind 3D buy for us! Good to hear nice 3D and audio.
I thought rental at best with this movie
...the actress that plays Guzmans daughter has a body to die for, seriously, I would....
I actually ended up liking this movie somewhat. I was expecting a complete dud, but I loved the 3D this movie had to offer and I think it made the movie more enjoyable for me. My opinion of this movie might be different if I saw it in regular 2D. In my own personal opinion and call me crazy if you want, but this is some of the best 3D I have seen.

Ralph, Can I ask a hardware question? I don't have a 3D capable projector. Why do I see acceptable if not very good 3D effects on the original Journey to the Center of the earth movie? I use the Play Station 3 as my player.

The film was shot natively in 3D so what you are probably seeing is the innate effects of images coming at the camera etc. Without a 3D display/hardware there is no way for you to be seeing anything otherwise. If you find that acceptable you will more than likely really enjoy actual 3D.. Regards, Click to expand...
That Journey to the Center of the Earth 3D BD disk you're referring to was an Anaglyph 3D version released a year after that movie was put on video. It was re-released about a year ago on video in the same "true 3D" method used in theaters using special Shuttered or Passive 3D glasses systems.

Journey 2: The Mysterious Island 3D Review
- June 13, 2012
In 1925, Arthur Conan Doyle’s The Lost World became a theatrical juggernaut, based almost entirely on the strength of stop motion dinosaurs, sourced from the hands of Willis O’Brien. In 1960, Irwin Allen remade Lost World , but ditched the stop motion for a slap dash iguana covered in a prosthetic. Audiences didn’t buy it, although calling the creature a Tyrannosaur wasn’t brilliant either.
That’s all relevant here because like those Lost World adaptations, Journey 2 is pulling its structure from famous literature. The irony is that Journey couldn’t come up with any sensible monsters either, although instead of real iguana, someone had to animate one… with teeth. History, however loosely, does repeat itself.
Warner’s sequel to Journey to the Center of the Earth writes itself into a rut, savagely attacking not only the Jules Verne source material, but others like Treasure Island . One piece wasn’t enough to fuel summer escapism apparently, as if the Treasure Island aspects actually amount to anything (they don’t).
Journey 2 is structurally stupid, mind-numbingly dumb if you will. With a little more history, Ray Harryhausen created an alarmingly convincing giant bee sequence for the 1961 edition of Mysterious Island . Two leads are inadvertently led directly into the hive where they’re sewn up in amber and need to make a heroic escape. Journey 2’s version? The bees are the friendly types, the villains played by colorful birds. How does it make any sense for the star of Rio to gain top villain billing over a bee in a child’s film? It seems backwards because it is.
The whole thing is a giant excuse for egregious 3D effects, overblown and popping through the screen with such force, it’s a wonder they even allowed it shown in 2D. All that does is expose the blatant nature of the “in your face” shenanigans that add nothing to the narrative, and only bog down a film barely cracking 90-minutes. Whatever spirit was gained by snagging Dwayne Johnson is lost when Juan Guzman begins pegging Johnson’s pecks with berries as a lunch trick. Scratch that. Most of it is lost when the usually enjoyable Guzman is shuffled into a role beneath his talents.
Much of Journey 2 is weighted by an endless series of continuity issues (Hutcherson’s neck cut, sweaty shirts), needless emotional fodder between the family, and wildly bogus science, there’s hardly any time for genuine fun. Action scenes are driven by their prerequisite need to showcase ticket-sucking 3D first, and excitement levels second. [xrr rating=2/5 label=Movie]
Practically drowning in primaries, Journey 2’s purposeful existence is driven by saturation. Kids love the colors, right? From the island greens to seas of flowers and brilliant browns of Atlantis, there are only a handful of shots that choose to dim their palette for effect. Most of those occur before heading to Sau Paulo in the Dayton home of the family.
Those “home sweet home” interiors also show what the Sony CineAlta cannot do: black levels. Interiors are drained of the boldness that permeates such a wide swatch of this presentation. The same goes for scenes inside caves or at night as Johnson delivers some pulverizing vocals by the campfire. When they finally have a grasp on the material -the closing moments inside the Nautilus- it’s too late.
Still, the niggling issues with the black levels are squelched by the enormity of the texture and brilliance of the dazzlingly colorful visual effects. The feel of this island is intact at home, those dramatic pauses to soak up the scale of specific talking points still felt on Blu-ray. With well controlled compression schemes, Journey 2’s grandest (and some would say cheesiest) elements are conveyed with reverence for the material.
When the camera swoops in close, the texture will adorn the actor’s faces. The same goes for their tight shots on the jungle, where foliage is spectacular in how deep and rich it can look, all without any sore spots. That comes with a small caveat which is noise. Digital effects play a role in the screen crawling with noise as often as low light will. It’s a rather distracting layer of digital buzz that swarms the image and sucks a little bit of life, enough to bring this one down to reality.
Bringing into its own realm of realism is the 3D presentation. While the expectation lies with the action scenes, it is the breathtaking beauty of enormous depth of the island that sells the 3D. Miles of trees, plants, and animal life are visible with remarkable distance. In flight during the bee ride, looking over the rolling ponds and hills is a marvel.
That aside, those major moments of action are a little dull. Many carry a pace too quick to really appreciate the 3D. Journey 2 has to slow down to appreciate the material. During the finale as the Nautilus careens underwater, rocks begin falling in front of the cabin, and there, with the slower pace of movement, is the scale sold. It is a rare case where the more open aspect ratio is a true winner in scaling up the size of the action. [xrr rating=4/5 label=2D-Video] [xrr rating=4/5 label=3D-Video]
Want a buzzkill? Check out the early storm sequence in Journey 2 , which feels as if the DTS-HD track was suffocated under a pillow and then stepped on by giant iguana. There’s no zest to what should be a wide, open, and full moment as the helicopter is sucked into a massive twister. A few stray parts will whoosh by, but the rain and wind seem all but forgotten, mashed together with the stereos while being lost in the bustle.
Journey 2 does get better as it lurches forward, some jungle ambiance nicely peppered around the space, and some cave work carries a definite echo effect. The creepy crawlies slink around in the surrounds or work through the stereos, showing that yes, this disc can split up a few channels of audio.
Major actions are up to par, but not much more. That’s probably the greater disappointment when laid out in text. The giant lizard doesn’t produce much of a pounding in the LFE and it sort of begrudgingly powers through the jungle. Emphasis on scale isn’t there, or rather, not in line with what the images show. Some island rumblings as the ground begins to give out? Those are more definitive.
As a final attempt at a showstopper sequence, a brief struggle with an electric eel sends electricity cackling through the speakers as a warning sign. It drifts and sways as needs be, tracking on cue. An escape underneath the collapsing island leads to a slightly out of balance torpedo shot that bursts above the volume line, but still leaves the listener on a vivid note. [xrr rating=4/5 label=Audio]
Note: The 3D disc has no extras. They are all contained on the 2D version.
Are You Strong Enough to Survive Mysterious Island? takes a kitchen sink approach to featurettes, cramming all of the loosely educational material and behind-the-scenes fluff into an annoyingly interactive interface. There’s a bunch of stuff buried in there if you wish to look for it, but the majority isn’t worth the time.
A gag reel portrays a strictly in-control set since there’s only a minutes worth of stuff, and deleted scenes are worth watching for two reasons: the hilarious explanation for how the animals will live once the island is sunk, and the priceless unfinished effects. [xrr rating=2/5 label=Extras]

Behind The Scenes Of Journey 2: The Mysterious Island
On set with The Rock and co
Heading To Hawaii
Film journalism can be tough. Like when you’re sent on a mission to Hawaii to uncover the secrets of Journey 2: The Mysterious Island . That really smarts. But, professional as ever, Total Film sucked it up and headed to the south side of Oahu island where the cast and crew of Journey 2 were setting up one of the movie’s biggest set pieces with Dwayne Johnson and Josh Hutcherson. For this sequel, Brendan Fraser is out of the picture, and Sean Anderson (Hutcherson) goes off on his next adventure with his mum’s new partner, Hank Parsons (Johnson). The pair set out to find Sean’s grandfather (played by returnee Michael Caine), in another riff on a Jules Verne story.
Setting The Scene
The scene that’s currently being shot comes as the mysterious island, an atoll that surfaces in the South Pacific once every 150 years and where the explorers have ended up, is rapidly sinking. The two actors were meant to be doing their own leaping off China Walls (the locals’ nickname for this stretch of coast), but yesterday the production had to be shut down after Hutcherson fell ill and was driven away looking very faint indeed (diagnosis: strep throat) so the young star’s stunt double will take over after close-ups and mid-shots are done. As for Johnson, the film’s panicky producers aren’t in the habit of letting their chunky leading man take too many risks. “If Dwayne so much as stubs his toe, everyone freaks out,” drawls one crew member to Total Film . Looking at the swells below, which look exceedingly dangerous, we reckon the producers’ claim that the actors were going to do their own ocean jumps could be a bit of hyperbole. With plenty of fake plantings and extra brush to beef up the jungle lushness, Hutcherson and Johnson stand on the bluff, gauging the leap below.
Harsh Conditions
Once they’re in the surf, their characters have to swim 100-feet under water to reach the submerged Nautilus submarine (told you this was loosely based on one of Verne’s rollicking adventures). Even though it’s late November, it’s a hot day and the crew's t-shirts are soaked through to a man (and occasional woman). “The sea level’s risen over 100 feet in the last 24 hours!” barks Johnson. Hutcherson, hobbling with the aid of a cane after his character plummeted off the back of a giant bumblebee, replies, “You know, if we die down there, mom’s gonna kills us.” After director Brad Peyton calls cut, the brollies go up to shield the stars from the Hawaiian sun, a lucky make-up girl sponges the sweat off Johnson’s naked scalp and a few Styrofoam rocks are moved around. The man formerly knows as The Rock decides to take a quick comfort break, although the production’s stinking portable conveniences have become a joke on the Journey 2 set. Before heading off, he turns to Total Film and laughs, “This is a $100m movie – we really need better Porta-Potties. Be very careful when you enter one.”
The Extra Dimension
Canadian director Peyton, who moved to LA two years ago, seems to be relishing the challenge of helming a large-scale blockbuster; “If you’re not filming giant lizards, then it’s diving into the ocean to find the Nautilus. There’s giant bees and birds and lizards and storms and helicopter crashes.” This movie is shot in 3D, and it was designed with the extra dimension in mind from inception. “A lot of the jokes and a lot of the action are designed for 3D.” That’s not the only high-tech hurdle to deal with. Some of the action sequences are being shot at 200 frames per second, so you’re going to be getting something coming out of the screen (like spear or some other pointy item) then freezing as the camera tracks around to examine it. “A lot of it is about how do you slow it down and just let it sit there and enjoy that moment,” adds Peyton. So can we expect 3D Bullet-time then? “Yeah it’s close.”
Return Journey
Peyton’s also keen to point out the massive increase in scale compared to the first film, from the scope of the production, to the sets being assembled and the crew that has been hired. “Not to denigrate the first movie but this is a better and more creative team and we’re going to have a much larger scale film.” Were there discussions about Brendan coming back? “It was always known that this film was a different adventure. So the answer is, yes, there was never any intent to have Brendan in this movie,” Peyton explains. “There was talk at one point of having Brendan do a cameo just because it would be fun – Brendan was interested and the studio was interested but story-wise it didn’t work out.” Peyton’s confident that it’s worth the audience taking a return Journey : “First of all, the script itself is better. It’s really more of a male-bonding story, this journey. The script is far superior and therefore the movie will be far superior to the first one.” Seeking solace from the overwhelming island heat, Total Film grabbed some shade for a chat with Dwayne Johnson and Josh Hutcherson.
Dwayne Johnson Interview
How does it feel to shoot at home in Hawaii? “It’s fantastic. It’s great to come back home, it’s great to shoot back here. You know, I grew up probably 30 minutes away from here and things were much different back then – for myself. It’s awesome to come back and bring a big movie back here to Hawaii, not only for the local businesses here in Hawaii but for me personally it’s very satisfying.” Does shooting in 3D affect your acting? “First of all, this is my first 3D movie so it’s been a fascinating experience. Does it affect the acting?” Because you’re already 3D yourself… “Thank you for saying that. You’ve known me for a long time, yes. No, I don’t believe it affects the acting, it mainly affects the shot set-ups. We’re the third generation users of Cameron’s 3D technology, we were the first generation with Journey To The Centre Of The Earth . He came by the set and was watching how all of his cameras, his technology was being utilised – and he was the second generation and now we’re the third. So it’s been fascinating.”
Bigger And Better
What was is that made you want to join Journey 2 ? “It was that, it was being part of a successful franchise. I really enjoyed the script and wanted to hopefully come on board and elevate it and make it bigger and better.” As an actor, what’s kind of films do you prefer working on? “Honestly I prefer everything. I’m really fortunate to be in the position that I’m in, to have the type of diverse career that I’ve been able to have, you know, being very comfortable in a lot of these spaces whether it’s adventure like this or action like Faster to a comedy.
"So I like the diversity and I like being able to work in all these different spaces, and I recognise that there’s not a lot of actors who have the opportunities that I have to work in such varied genres. I enjoy all of them. I think ultimately though, something that is part of my make-up is that I like taking care of things so I like that whether it’s in a comedy or an action movie or an adventure movie. Just the guy who may not be great but does get better by the end of the movie and does take care of things. Kicks a lot of ass too. You’ve gotta do that every once in a while.”
Finding Paradise
What about your character? “He’s a fun character to play. He’s an accomplished guy, was in the Navy, built his own business and gets taken on this incredible adventure with his stepson who has already journeyed to the centre of the Earth and is now going to explore, uh, this really cool, iconic Jules Verne novel and gets taken to this ethereal place that he never thought existed – and it does. So it’s been great.” What lost paradise would you like to go back to? “I’d love to go back to the Roman Empire; I would love that.” On the centurion or gladiator side? You could be Spartacus… “I’d love to take a crack at that… I don’t quite know – I would be an infusion of both. A Caesar who was a gladiator and got to compete – and get the girl, of course.”
Relating To Josh
What’s your relationship with Josh like in the movie? “He’s a young man and, like a lot of relationships - whether it’s with your real dad or it’s with your stepdad - oftentimes there’s a struggle to find some cohesiveness and find some balance. So we’re struggling, when we meet up with these two characters, we’re struggling to find that.
"And I was this way – like a lot of teenagers he feels like he knows the road, the path that he’s on, doesn’t necessarily need a lot of help, certainly not from his mom’s new husband. But now having children of my own and having gone through that myself, I know there are some wisdoms and some pearls that I can share so that’s how our relationships starts out. And then we ultimately bond together into a really nice relationship, which I liked.
"That was a point of movies that I like doing is that by the end your central character has just become better people, and they make everybody else around them better.”
Josh Hutcherson Interview
So, after a day off sick yesterday, you’re diving into the water later today? “I think so. We’re jumping off the end of the world into the ocean. I’m looking forward to it. It’s so hot out there and the water’s so nice. Especially on those rocks, because the heat just bakes them and turns them to hot stones and you’re just frying out there.” What happened to your foot? “Basically, I was flying on top of a giant bumblebee and I fell off and I rolled my ankle severely. As you can see we have a makeshift cast thing going on. It was pretty gnarly actually.”
Romantic Relations
What’s the appeal with Journey 2 ? “What’s cool about this cast is we’re all different genres coming together. With Dwayne it’s the action crowd and Luis [ Guzman ] is comedy and Michael Caine is a legend, and then Vanessa [ Hudgens ] is like my age. So it’s nice to have some different people around on set, and especially somebody younger like Vanessa so her and I can get along and hang out and stuff.” Your characters have a bit of romance don’t they? “Oh yeah, definitely. We definitely have a little something, a little something sizzling.” How was Dwayne to work with? “He is awesome. He’s so much fun, he’s so cool. I mean I grew up – when I was younger I used to love watching wrestling and he was The Rock back in the day. But now he’s transitioned over into a full-blown actor which is really awesome and he’s a great actor and he’s great with stunts, so he’s just a really all-round great guy.”
Absent Friends
How has it been shooting in 3D? “The 3D doesn’t really affect anything we have to do as actors. Sometimes it takes a bit longer to set up shots because they have the different special things they have to do with the two lenses. Other than that the biggest challenge for me is not being on the beach the entire time we’re here shooting. It’s so beautiful, you just want to enjoy the surroundings. The other day we were shooting on the most beautiful beach ever and we couldn’t get in the water because we were working all day. So that’s tough.” “The first movie it was like 80% greenscreen, although we got to go Iceland for a few days which was cool. This is like the polar opposite.” Is it strange coming back without the people who were there on the first film? “Um, it’s a little weird. To me it doesn’t feel like it’s at all the same movie. It’s a completely different adventure with a different cast and we’re in a different place.” What do you like to do in your free time? “I surf a ton. I’m always in the water. I love being in the water so much. I surf, work out, eat awesome food and enjoy the sights.”
Production Values
What’s next for you? “I have a couple projects that are on the horizon possibly but three days before I came down here I finished shooting this movie called Detention , which is a horror comedy, it’s a genre film that’s going to be cool. And I produced that as well so that was very exciting.
"It was great because I’ve grown up on sets since I was like nine years old and I’ve learned a lot about every aspect of filmmaking and I’ve always had my ideas and I’ve wanted to say things but I’ve never been in the right position to give my input because it would be out of place. So for the first time I was able to say my feelings about the project and in my opinion [ bring it to a better place ].” Do you think you’d like to direct in future? “Definitely. I love every aspect of filmmaking and I would love to direct something too.”
Getting Involved In The Action
What can you tell us about your adventures in Journey 2 ? “Can’t give away too much but there’s a giant lizard that chases us, giant bumblebees that we fly on. There’s tiny baby elephants that you want to keep as pets. And there’s a submarine that we have to swim down 100 feet and get to and there’s a little monster guarding that so there’s quite a few little adventures we have to go on.” Do you have many underwater scenes? “Yes, the Nautilus scene is the biggest one. We have to swim down a 100 feet and go into the Nautilus and come back up and get the rest of the gang. But I actually had to get certified for scuba diving to do that because we’re going to have to do a lot of underwater breathing and training and stuff like that.” Do you have a stunt tester? “Yeah, Ralph! It’s funny, I love doing my own stunts – I’m like a producer’s worst nightmare because I’m always trying to do my own stunts and they don’t like that. But Ralph is awesome, I’ve done three movies with him now – he’s a good guy.”
Friending Michael Caine
What fantasy journey would you like to take? “Atlantis would be pretty awesome, cos you always hear about the lost city of Atlantis under the water and the fact that in our movie it rises to the surface…? If that actually happened that would be a very cool place to go.” What’s it like working with Michael Caine? “Michael Caine’s a legend. I mean he walks on set and you’re like, Pinch me, that’s Michael Caine standing right there! He’s such a nice guy and it’s weird you’d think that as an 18 year old guy you wouldn’t – not necessarily not get along with him but you don’t think you’d be able to communicate very well with a 77 year old man. But he is hip; he understands what’s going on, he gets it, like he knows all the lingo. He’s down. He’s very sharp for being 77.” You two could be Facebook friends... “Exactly! My mom told me he was twittering the other day! I mean, I don’t even tweet, that’s ridiculous! Michael Caine’s beat me on the tweeting thing? That’s crazy.”
Perks Of The Job
You didn’t really know Vanessa Hudgens well before working with her on this, how do you get along? “We get along great. She’s so much fun to be around, she’s always dancing around and having a good time and joking. We were total goofballs together so it’s a lot of fun having her around.” Are there any other actresses you’d particularly like to do a romantic scene with? “Oh man, there’s so many beautiful actresses. I know it’s kind of ridiculous but I think Eva Mendes is absolutely beautiful. I know she’s like 10 years older than me but a guy can dream, right? It’s the movies, anything’s possible!” Journey 2: The Mysterious Island opens on 3 February 2012.

Filming Begins on JOURNEY 2: THE MYSTERIOUS ISLAND Starring Dwayne Johnson and Josh Hutcherson
Filming has begun in Oahu, Hawaii for JOURNEY 2: THE MYSTERIOUS ISLAND, which stars Dwayne Johnson, Josh Hutcherson, and Michael Caine.
Filming has begun in Oahu, Hawaii for Journey 2: The Mysterious Island , the sequel to the 2008 release Journey to the Center of the Earth . Josh Hutcherson ( The Kids Are All Right ) will reprise his role from the original, with Dwayne Johnson ( The Other Guys ) and Michael Caine ( Inception ) set to co-star along with Vanessa Hudgens ( High School Musical ), Luis Guzman ( Nothing Like the Holidays ) and Kristin Davis ( Couples Retreat ). Brad Peyton ( Cats and Dogs: The Revenge of Kitty Galore ) is set to direct the 3D family flick.
Hit the jump for the official announcement, plus some of my thoughts.
This method of revamping and "kiddifying" classic Jules Verne novels may not exactly be my cup of cinematic tea... but considering that the first film wasn’t completely without its charms, I suppose there’s no harm in giving it another shot. And come on -- who hasn’t, at some point in their lives, desired to see Sir Michael Caine in glorious three dimensions? That’s what I thought.
Journey 2: The Mysterious Island is set for release September 23, 2011.
Here's the official press release:
Production Underway on New Line Cinema’s 3D Family Adventure “Journey 2: The Mysterious Island” Dwayne Johnson, Michael Caine, Josh Hutcherson, Vanessa Hudgens, Luis Guzman and Kristin Davis to Star. Filming has begun on location in Oahu, Hawaii, for the 3D family adventure "Journey 2: The Mysterious Island," directed by Brad Peyton ("Cats & Dogs: The Revenge of Kitty Galore"). Josh Hutcherson will reprise his role as young adventurer Sean Anderson in this exciting follow-up to the 2008 worldwide hit "Journey to the Center of the Earth 3D," the first live-action film ever to be shot in digital 3D. Dwayne Johnson stars as Sean's stepfather, Hank Parsons; Michael Caine as Sean's grandfather, Alexander Anderson; Vanessa Hudgens and Luis Guzman as a father-daughter tour guide team; and Kristin Davis as Sean's mom, Liz Anderson. The new journey begins when Sean receives a coded distress signal from a mysterious island where no island should exist - a place of strange life forms, mountains of gold, deadly volcanoes, and more than one astonishing secret. Unable to stop him from going, Sean's new stepfather joins the quest. Together with a helicopter pilot and his beautiful, strong-willed daughter, they set out to find the island, rescue its lone inhabitant and escape before seismic shockwaves force the island under the sea and bury its treasures forever. "Journey 2: The Mysterious Island" is being produced by Beau Flynn & Tripp Vinson, and Charlotte Huggins from a screenplay by Mark Gunn & Brian Gunn, story by Richard Outten. Serving as executive producers are Michael Bostick, Evan Turner, Marcus Viscidi, Richard Brener, Samuel J. Brown and Michael Disco. The creative filmmaking team includes director of photography David Tattersall ("Gulliver's Travels"), production designer Bill Boes ("Fantastic Four"), costume designer Denise Wingate ("Wedding Crashers") and Academy Award© nominated visual effects supervisor Boyd Shermis ("Poseidon"). Beginning in January 2011, production will move to Wilmington, North Carolina, to finish shooting after the holiday hiatus, and is scheduled to wrap principal photography in February 2011. "Journey 2: The Mysterious Island" is a New Line Cinema presentation, a Walden Media and Contrafilm production and will be distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures, a Warner Bros. Entertainment Company.

MidJourney announces plans to create an AI world simulation tool in full 3D
Filming movies in a future sandbox?
Artificial intelligence image generation platform MidJourney is working on new 3D, video and real-time creation models that would allow it to simulate the entire world.
Details came out as part of the recent “office hours” on Discord where company leadership answer questions from users about the future of the platform.
Rumors have circulated for some time that MidJourney was expanding beyond images, but this seems to suggest the new moves will be tightly focused on creating a world model.
They have been adding and upgrading other features such as image description and consistent characters while building new models.
The exact nature of this is unclear but the company suggests it would be a virtual environment where people could build video games or shoot movies — an “open world sandbox”.
Moving beyond images with AI
MidJourney was founded in 2022 by David Holz, a self-proclaimed serial entrepreneur.
The first open beta was released in July that year and rapidly iteratted and upgraded over the following year, with its most powerful v6 model releasing in December last year. In the same office hours Holtz said v7 would be a bigger jump than from 5 to 6.

MidJourney has remained stubbornly inside Discord as the way to interact with and make images using its model, although some high intensity users can use use the web interface.
Work has already started on training the seventh version of the MidJourney image model and Holtz told users on Discord that 3D generation may arrive before video.
The value of moving into 3D worlds
To be clear we're not working on a headset right now (we're working on hardware related to data capture), but we did build and open source an AR headset >6 years ago at Leap Motion (images and URL below) Blogpost: https://t.co/8mX5QTddL9Open source website:… pic.twitter.com/Z7Bz2WMy0J March 13, 2024
It makes some sense dimensionality is part of the focus. One of Holtz former startups was Leap Motion, a company that built sensors for tracking hand and finger motions in VR.
"We're really trying to get to the world simulation,” he said on Discord. “We're building 3D midjourney, video MJ, & real-time MJ where things move really really fast.”
He added that if you put this all together you get world simulation. The goal, he said is to build each of those three elements independently then work on ways to bring them together.
“It will be more of a sandbox,” he explained. Adding that “people will make video games in it, people will shoot movies in it, but the goal is to build the open world sandbox."
So the metaverse is back?
On the surface this sounds like some modern interpretation of the metaverse. The idea of a fully interconnected series of virtual environments where people can carry out every day tasks, earn money and have fun.
However, it seems more like a new way to create content of any type, including generating entire virtual environments where future Sci-Fi movies could be filmed without having to use VFX tools to create every element at geat cost.
The sandbox vision from MidJourney's Holtz bears more resemblance to some of the ideas being put forward by Roblox for its developer studio.
The company recently revealed new texture and avatar generators and during a conversation with Head of Studio Stefano Corazza I was told there are plans down the line to have AI generate entire environments from a text prompt.

Highlights From SpaceX’s Starship Test Flight
The powerful rocket, a version of which will carry astronauts to the moon for NASA, launched for the third time on Thursday morning. It achieved a number of milestones before losing contact with the ground.

Here’s what happened during the third test flight of the most powerful rocket ever built.
Spacex launches starship for third time, the rocket, a version of which will eventually carry nasa astronauts to the moon, traveled almost halfway around the earth before it was lost as it re-entered the atmosphere..
“Five, four, three, two, three, one.” “This point, we’ve already passed through Max-Q, maximum dynamic pressure. And passing supersonic, so we’re now moving faster than the speed of sound. Getting those on-board views from the ship cameras. Boosters now making its way back, seeing six engines ignited on ship. Kate, we got a Starship on its way to space and a booster on the way back to the Gulf.” “Oh, man. I need a moment to pick my jaw up from the floor because these views are just stunning.”
The third try turned out to be closer to the charm for Elon Musk and SpaceX, as his company’s mammoth Starship rocket launched on Thursday and traveled about halfway around the Earth before it was lost as it re-entered the atmosphere.
The test flight achieved several key milestones in the development of the vehicle, which could alter the future of space transportation and help NASA return astronauts to the moon.
This particular flight was not, by design, intended to make it all the way around the Earth. At 8:25 a.m. Central time, Starship — the biggest and most powerful rocket ever to fly — lifted off from the coast of South Texas. The ascent was smooth, with the upper Starship stage reaching orbital velocities. About 45 minutes after launch, it started re-entering the atmosphere, heading toward a belly-flop splashdown in the Indian Ocean.
Live video, conveyed in near real-time via SpaceX’s Starlink satellites , showed red-hot gases heating the underside of the vehicle. Then, 49 minutes after launch, communications with Starship ended, and SpaceX later said the vehicle had not survived the re-entry, presumably disintegrating and falling into the ocean.
Even so, Bill Nelson, the administrator of NASA, congratulated SpaceX on what he called a “successful test flight” of the system his agency is counting on for some of its Artemis lunar missions.
SpaceX aims to make both the vehicle’s lower rocket booster and the upper spacecraft stage capable of flying over and over again — a stark contrast to the single-launch throwaway rockets that have been used for most of the space age.
That reusability gives SpaceX the potential to drive down the cost of lofting satellites and telescopes, as well as people and the things they need to live in space.
Completing most of the short jaunt was a reassuring validation that the rocket’s design appears to be sound. Not only is Starship crucial for NASA’s lunar plans, it is the key to Mr. Musk’s pipe dream of sending people to live on Mars.
For Mr. Musk, the success also harks back to his earlier reputation as a technological visionary who led breakthrough advances at Tesla and SpaceX, a contrast with his troubled purchase of Twitter and the polarizing social media quagmire that has followed since he transformed the platform and renamed it X. Even as SpaceX launched its next-generation rocket, the social media company was dueling with Don Lemon , a former CNN anchor who was sharing clips from a combative interview with Mr. Musk.
SpaceX still needs to pull off a series of formidable rocketry firsts before Starship is ready to head to the moon and beyond. Earlier this week, Mr. Musk said he hoped for at least six more Starship flights this year, during which some of those experiments may occur.
But if it achieves them all, the company could again revolutionize the space transportation business and leave competitors far behind.
Phil Larson, a White House space adviser during the Obama administration who also previously worked on communication efforts at SpaceX, said Starship’s size and reusability had “massive potential to change the game in transportation to orbit. And it could enable whole new classes of missions.”
NASA is counting on Starship to serve as the lunar lander for Artemis III, a mission that will take astronauts to the surface of the moon for the first time in more than 50 years. That journey is currently scheduled for late 2026 but seems likely to slide to 2027 or later.
The third flight was a marked improvement from the first two launch attempts.
Last April, Starship made it off the launchpad, but a cascade of engine failures and fires in the booster led to the rocket’s destruction 24 miles above the Gulf of Mexico.
In November, the second Starship launch traveled much farther. All 33 engines in the Super Heavy booster worked properly during ascent, and after a successful separation, the upper Starship stage nearly made it to orbital velocities. However, both stages ended up exploding.
Nonetheless, Mr. Musk hailed both test flights as successes, as they provided data that helped engineers improve the design.
Thursday’s launch — which coincided with the 22nd anniversary of the founding of SpaceX — occurred 85 minutes into a 110-minute launch window. The 33 engines in the booster ignited at the launch site outside Brownsville, Texas, and lifted the rocket, which was as tall as a 40-story building, into the morning sky.
Most of the flight proceeded smoothly, and a number of test objectives were achieved during the flight, like opening and closing the spacecraft’s payload doors, which will be needed to deliver cargo in the future.
SpaceX did not attempt to recover the booster this time, but did have it perform engine burns that will be needed to return to the launch site. However, the final landing burn for the booster, conducted over the Gulf of Mexico, did not fully succeed — an area that SpaceX will attempt to fix for future flights.
SpaceX said the Super Heavy disintegrated at an altitude of about 1,500 feet.
SpaceX engineers will also have to figure out why Starship did not survive re-entry and make fixes to the design of the vehicle.
Even with the partial success of Thursday’s flight, Starship is far from ready to go to Mars, or even the moon. Because of Mr. Musk’s ambitions for Mars, Starship is much larger and much more complicated than what NASA needs for its Artemis moon landings. For Artemis III, two astronauts are to spend about a week in the South Pole region of the moon.
“He had the low price,” Daniel Dumbacher, the executive director of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics and a former high-level official at NASA, said of Mr. Musk, “and NASA chose to take the risk associated with that configuration hoping that it would work out. And we’ll see if that turns out to be true.”
To leave Earth’s orbit, Starship must have its propellant tanks refilled with liquid methane and liquid oxygen. That will require a complex choreography of additional Starship launches to take the propellants to orbit.
“This is a complicated, complicated problem, and there’s a lot that has to get sorted out, and a lot that has to work right,” Mr. Dumbacher said.
Thursday’s flight included an early test of that technology, moving liquid oxygen from one tank to another within Starship.
Mr. Dumbacher does not expect Starship to be ready by September 2026, the launch date NASA currently has for Artemis III, although he would not predict how much of a delay there might be. “I’m not going to give you a guess because there is way too much work, way too many problems to solve,” he said.

A rare sight: Starship’s bright orange glow as it re-entered Earth’s atmosphere.
Just past the 45-minute mark of the Starship vehicle’s journey through space on Thursday, something eerie happened. As it drifted high above Earth’s oceans and clouds, the spacecraft’s silvery exterior was overtaken by a brilliant and fiery orange glow.
Starship re-entering Earth's atmosphere. Views through the plasma pic.twitter.com/HEQX4eEHWH — SpaceX (@SpaceX) March 14, 2024
When a spacecraft re-enters the atmosphere, the air beneath it gets hot — hot enough that it turns into a plasma of charged particles as electrons are stripped away from the air molecules. The charged particles create picturesque glows, like neon signs.
But seeing this happen in nearly real-time during a spaceflight is uncommon. That plasma disrupts radio signals, cutting off communication.
Such blackouts happen, for instance, when SpaceX’s Crew Dragon capsule returns to Earth from the International Space Station with its complement of four astronauts. Mission controllers must wait with bated breath to be reassured that the spacecraft’s heat shield has held up and protected the crew during atmospheric re-entry.
Until Starship succumbed to the intense forces of re-entry on Thursday, SpaceX used its Starlink internet satellites to relay the live video feed. The Starlink satellites are in higher orbits, and sending signals upward — away from the plasma — is easier than trying to communicate through it to antennas on the ground.
But Starship wasn’t the only spacecraft in recent weeks to give us a view of plasma heating. Varda Space, a startup that is developing technology for manufacturing in orbit, had cameras on a capsule it landed on Earth on Feb. 21. Before it parachuted to the ground, its Winnebago capsule recorded a day-glow re-entry. The company retrieved the video recording from the capsule and shared it online:

Jeff Bezos’s rocket company could race SpaceX to the moon.
Which billionaire space company will get to the moon first: Elon Musk’s SpaceX or Jeff Bezos’ Blue Origin?
At first glance, SpaceX seems to have a huge head start. It is about to launch the third test flight of Starship. A variation of Starship is scheduled to take NASA astronauts to the surface of the moon as soon as September 2026.
By contrast, Blue Origin has yet to launch anything into orbit, and its contract with NASA for a lunar lander for astronauts is for a mission that is launching in 2030.
But Blue Origin might still get there first. SpaceX faces major challenges with Starship, which is as tall as 16-story building, while Blue Origin plans to send a smaller cargo lander to the moon by the end of next year.
“This lander, we’re expecting to land on the moon between 12 and 16 months from today,” John Couluris, senior vice president of lunar permanence at Blue Origin, said during a n interview on the CBS News program “60 Minutes” this month.
The first launch of the Mark 1 version of the Blue Moon lander is what Blue Origin calls a “pathfinder” to test technologies like the BE-7 engine, the flight computers, avionics and power systems — the same systems that will be used in the much larger Mark 2 lander that will take astronauts to the moon’s surface.
The Mark 1 lander can carry up to three tons of cargo to the lunar surface, but will be small enough to fit inside one of Blue Origin’s New Glenn rockets . New Glenn has yet to fly, but the company says its debut journey will occur later this year.
After Blue Moon Mark 1 is launched into an orbit about 125 miles above Earth’s surface, the lander’s BE-7 engine will propel it toward the moon, slowing it down to enter orbit around the moon and then guiding it to the landing on the surface.
The smaller size means that the Mark 1 lander, unlike Starship, will not need to be refueled before leaving Earth orbit. Demonstrating that refueling technology in orbit will be a key test to validate Starship’s design. Refueling will also be needed for the Blue Moon Mark 2 lander.
Mr. Musk and Mr. Bezos have already been beaten to the moon by another billionaire, Kam Ghaffarian , one of the founders of Intuitive Machines, which put a small robotic lander named Odysseus near the lunar south pole in February . That was the first private spacecraft to successfully make it to the moon’s surface in one piece (although its journey had some hiccups ).
As with every American rocket mishap, the Federal Aviation Administration will open an investigation to review what went wrong and what SpaceX needs to do to correct it. But if, as Elon Musk says, there are at least six more Starship flights this year, SpaceX will have opportunities to complete a full test flight.
Starship's third flight went very far, but like its first two flights, it was not a complete success. The landing burn for the Super Heavy booster stage of the rocket — the aim was to “land” it in the Gulf of Mexico — was not fully successful, and the Starship craft did not survive re-entry. But it was marked significant progress, because none of the problems from the earlier flights recurred, and SpaceX engineers now have data to tackle the new problems.
Michael Roston
On the social media site X, Bill Nelson, the administrator of NASA, congratulated SpaceX on what he called a “successful test flight” of Starship. The agency is counting on Starship to land astronauts on the moon’s surface as part of the Artemis III mission. Another vehicle, the Orion capsule, is to be used to bring those astronauts back to Earth.
SpaceX says Starship did not survive re-entry, but it achieved several key milestones during the flight. That marks significant progress since the second test flight. Elon Musk has said he hopes there will be a half-dozen Starship flights this year.
SpaceX says a dual loss of communication, both through its own Starlink satellites and other forms spacecraft communications with Earth, suggest that Starship did not survive re-entry. They’re still listening to see if radio contact resumes.
Video is gone. Telemetry is also stuck at a speed 25,707 kilometers per hour and an altitude of 65 kilometers. The reason is not clear.
Starship already has private customers booked for deep space trips.
Starship has not yet done a full orbit of the Earth, but SpaceX already has three private astronaut missions on its manifest for the spacecraft.
The first flight with astronauts aboard will be led by Jared Isaacman who previously bought an orbital trip on a Falcon 9 rocket that was known as Inspiration4 .
Then two other Starship flights will travel around the moon and back, one led by Yusaku Maezawa , a Japanese entrepreneur, and the other by Dennis Tito, who was the first private individual to buy a trip to the International Space Station in 2001.
Back in 2018 when Mr. Maezawa signed up for the lunar flyby, Mr. Musk said Starship would be ready by 2023.
Mr. Maezawa later called the mission ‘dearMoon,’ inviting people to apply for a seat on the trip. Last week, he acknowledged it was not going to happen this year.
“We were planning for our lunar orbital mission ‘dearMoon’ to take place in 2023, but seems like it will take a little longer,” he wrote on the social network X. “We’re not sure when the flight will be, but we will give you all an update once we know more.”
SpaceX is apparently also planning uncrewed cargo flights to the surface of the moon with Starship.
In March last year, a small start-up company, Astrolab, announced that it was sending a Jeep Wrangler-size rover to surface in the south polar region of the moon , and the ride would be a cargo Starship flight that would take it there.
SpaceX did not confirm the news.
This appears to be part of the expanding potential market for Starship. SpaceX also plans to use the rocket for launching its second generation of Starlink internet communications satellites .
Starship is re-entering Earth's atmosphere. We’re seeing the heating on the flaps, with video being transmitted to the ground through SpaceX's Starlink satellites. The view is incredible. Usually the plasma disrupts radio transmissions.
SpaceX skipped the restart of one of the Raptor engines on the upper stage of Starship. It did conduct the propellant transfer test and the opening and closing of the payload door, which means the flight achieved some of its experimental objectives during its coast around the Earth, but not others. Next stop: Re-entry through the atmosphere and a hard bellyflop in the Indian Ocean.
The music on the livestream is more old-fashioned than the ambient beats we’re used to during SpaceX video feeds. But there’s nothing old-fashioned about the views in space from the rocket, which are unreal, but have not always been visible as its connection to the ground comes and goes.
During this period of the flight, Starship is scheduled to perform several tests. The first, opening the payload door, is complete. It will also move several tons of liquid oxygen between two tanks within Starship. That’s a preliminary test for future in-orbit refueling between two Starships, which is critical for sending the vehicle to the moon. Finally, Starship will try to restart one of its Raptor engines in the vacuum of space, something it has not done before.
The payload door of the upper Starship rocket stage is now open. That’s how a future Starship will deploy Starlink satellites, and demonstrating that it works was one of the objectives of today's flight.
The engines on the upper-stage of the rocket successfully completed their burn. Starship is now coasting in space, on a trajectory that will re-enter the atmosphere over the Indian Ocean.
We were watching the booster attempting to land in the Gulf of Mexico. But the camera feed cut off, and we're not sure what actually happened. The upper stage Starship is still continuing on its trajectory toward the Indian Ocean.
The Super Heavy booster stage of the rocket appears to be headed back to Earth. During the last attempt, the booster exploded at this point, so it looks like SpaceX has fixed that issue.
The large Super Heavy booster stage has separated from the Starship upper stage, which is on its way to space. The flight is looking good.
All 33 Raptor engines in the booster are working fine. So far everything looks good.
Less than 2 minutes until liftoff. Propellant tanks are full, and wind will not prevent an on-time liftoff.
Starship is less than 10 minutes away from its third launch. The countdown is going smoothly.
What will happen during Starship’s third test flight.
For its third test flight, Starship aims to fly part of the way around the Earth, starting from SpaceX’s launch site in Boca Chica Village, Texas, and splashing down in the Indian Ocean.
The earlier test flights — both of which ended in explosions — aimed to come down in waters off Hawaii. SpaceX said it had set the new flight path to allow for safe testing of things it hadn’t done before with the Starship vehicle.
The journey will start at the site that SpaceX calls Starbase, which is a few miles north of where Texas and Mexico meet along the Gulf of Mexico. The rocket, nearly 400 feet tall, will be mounted next to a launch tower that is about 480 feet tall. It will be filled with methane and liquid oxygen propellants during the hours before liftoff.
Three seconds before launch, computers will begin to ignite the 33 engines in the Super Heavy rocket booster beneath Starship.
Starship and Super Heavy will begin their ascent over the Gulf. At 52 seconds into the flight, SpaceX says, the vehicle will experience the heaviest atmospheric stress of its trip, a moment flight engineers call max-q.
If the stainless steel spacecraft survives that stress, the next key moment will occur 2 minutes and 42 seconds into flight, when most of the Super Heavy booster’s engines power down. Seconds later, the upper Starship vehicle will begin “hot-staging,” or lighting up its engines before separating from Super Heavy.
Super Heavy’s journey will end about seven minutes after launch. SpaceX would typically aim to return the massive rocket booster to the launch site for a vertical landing. But for the test flight, the spent Super Heavy will perform a series of maneuvers before firing its engines one last time to slow its descent into the Gulf of Mexico.
As Super Heavy is descending, Starship will be gaining altitude. About eight and a half minutes into its flight, its engines will switch off. It will then begin coasting around the Earth.
While floating through space, Starship will attempt several things that the spacecraft has never done. Nearly 12 minutes into the flight, it will open a door that in the future could deploy satellites and other cargo into space. About 12 minutes later, it will transfer propellants from one tank to another while in space, a technique needed for future journeys to the moon and beyond. Then, 40 minutes into the flight, Starship will relight one if its engines while in space.
If the spacecraft makes it through those experiments, the conclusion of Starship’s journey will start at about the 49-minute mark. The spacecraft is set to pivot horizontally into a belly-flop to re-enter Earth’s atmosphere. If it survives the extreme temperatures, Starship will splash down 64 minutes after it left Texas. The company has said in the past that it expects the belly-flop ocean landing to end in an explosion .
After SpaceX completes its testing campaign, future Starship flights will return to the Texas Starbase site after they complete their missions in orbit. SpaceX is also building a launch tower for Starship at Kennedy Space Center in Florida, where flights could one day launch and land, including the Artemis III mission that NASA plans to use to return American astronauts to the moon’s surface.
SpaceX has started the company’s official live video stream from Texas, a sign that it is serious about igniting the rocket in about 20 minutes. You can watch it in the video player embedded above.
What went right and wrong during the 2nd Starship test flight.
The second test flight of Starship in November got a lot higher and faster than the first attempt seven months earlier.
During the first launch outside Brownsville, Texas, in April last year, things went wrong from the start — the exhaust of the engines of the Super Heavy booster excavated a hole beneath the launchpad, sending pieces of concrete flying up to three-quarters of a mile away and a plume of dust drifting 6.5 miles, blanketing the nearby town of Port Isabel. Several of the booster engines failed, and the upper stage never separated from the booster.
Instead, the rocket started making loop-de-loops before the flight termination system destroyed it.
During the second test flight , all 33 of the booster engines worked during ascent. A water deluge system protected the launchpad. The upper Starship stage separated from the booster and then made it most of the way to orbital velocity. However, the journeys of both the booster and the upper Starship stage still ended in explosions.
For the booster, as it dropped away from the upper stage, 13 of the 33 engines fired again to guide it toward the landing location. Although this particular booster was not going to be recovered, SpaceX wanted to test the re-entry techniques that are similar to what it currently uses for its smaller Falcon 9 rockets. However, something went wrong. Several engines shut down and then one blew up, causing the destruction of the booster.
In an update posted on the company’s website on Feb. 26 , SpaceX said the most likely cause of the booster failure was a blockage of a filter where liquid oxygen flowed to the engines. The company said it had made design changes to prevent that from happening again.
The upper stage continued upward for seven minutes after stage separation. This was itself an achievement because the company completed a step called hot-staging, during which the upper-stage engines ignite before the stage detaches from the Super Heavy booster.
Because the spacecraft was empty, extra liquid oxygen was loaded to simulate the weight of a future payload it could carry to orbit. But when the extra oxygen was dumped, a fire started, disrupting communication between the spacecraft’s flight computers. The computers shut down the engines and then set off the flight termination system, destroying the spacecraft.
The upper Starship stage reached an altitude of about 90 miles and a speed of about 15,000 miles per hour. For a spacecraft to reach orbit, it needs to accelerate to about 17,000 miles per hour.
Frost lines have appeared on Starship and the Super Heavy booster as methane and liquid oxygen flow into the rocket’s tanks.
It’s sunrise in Cameron County, Texas, but weather reports show cloudy conditions persist. We’ll see if weather is going to keep Starship on the beach, but SpaceX says it has started loading propellants into the rocket.
Launch time is now 9:25 a.m. Eastern. SpaceX says winds are still a concern that could cause a liftoff to be called off, but it will go ahead with loading of propellants in the rocket.
SpaceX pushed the launch time back a little more, to 9:10 a.m. Eastern. They have until 9:50 to try today.
SpaceX has just announced the new target launch time is 9:02 a.m. Eastern, and the company said on X that it is clearing some boats from a safety zone in the Gulf of Mexico. Cameras from a number of space enthusiast websites like NASASpaceflight that are pointing at the rocket show there is still no frost on its side, so the loading of ultracold methane and liquid oxygen propellants has not yet begun.
As SpaceX prepares for its third flight of Starship, other space efforts have experienced difficulties this week. On Wednesday, Kairos, a rocket from a Japanese startup called Space One, exploded moments into its first launch attempt. And Xinhua, a Chinese state news agency, said on Thursday that two Chinese satellites were lost after a rocket failed to reach the planned orbit.
In a posting on the social media site X, SpaceX says that it is aiming for launch at 8:30 a.m. Eastern time, or 30 minutes into the 110-minute launch window. There is a 70 percent chance of favorable weather. There have been concerns of high winds, especially at higher altitudes.
What is Starship?
For Elon Musk, Starship is really a Mars ship. He envisions a fleet of Starships carrying settlers to the red planet in the coming years.
And for that eventual purpose, Starship, under development by Mr. Musk’s SpaceX rocket company , has to be big. Stacked on top of what SpaceX calls a Super Heavy booster, the Starship rocket system will be, by pretty much every measure, the biggest and most powerful ever.
It is the tallest rocket ever built — 397 feet tall, or about 90 feet taller than the Statue of Liberty including the pedestal.
And it has the most engines ever in a rocket booster: The Super Heavy has 33 of SpaceX’s powerful Raptor engines sticking out of its bottom. As those engines lift Starship off the launchpad in South Texas, they will generate 16 million pounds of thrust at full throttle.
NASA’s new Space Launch System rocket , which made its first flight in November 2022, holds the current record for the maximum thrust of a rocket: 8.8 million pounds. The maximum thrust of the Saturn V rocket that took NASA astronauts to the moon during the Apollo program was relatively paltry: 7.6 million pounds.
An even more transformative feature of Starship is that it is designed to be entirely reusable. The Super Heavy booster is to land much like those for SpaceX’s smaller Falcon 9 rockets, and Starship will be able to return from space belly-flopping through the atmosphere like a sky diver before pivoting to a vertical position for landing.
That means all of the really expensive pieces — like the 33 Raptor engines in the Super Heavy booster and six additional Raptors in Starship itself — will be used over and over instead of thrown away into the ocean after one flight.
That has the potential to cut the cost of sending payloads into orbit — to less than $10 million to take 100 tons to space, Mr. Musk has predicted.
Starship and Super Heavy are shiny because SpaceX made them out of stainless steel, which is cheaper than using other materials like carbon composites. But one side of Starship is coated in black tiles to protect the spacecraft from the extreme heat that it will encounter if it gets far enough in its flight to re-enter the atmosphere.
Here is what to know about Thursday’s SpaceX test flight.
The third try was closer to the charm for Elon Musk and SpaceX, as the company’s flight test of the mammoth Starship rocket launched on Thursday and traveled almost halfway around the Earth before it was lost as it re-entered the atmosphere.
The flight achieved some key milestones in the development of the vehicle, which could alter the future of space transportation and help NASA return astronauts to the moon.
This particular flight did not, by design, make it all the way around the Earth. At 9:25 a.m. Eastern time, Starship, the biggest and most powerful rocket ever to fly, lifted off from the coast of South Texas. About 45 minutes later it started its re-entry, but communications were lost a few minutes after that. The company said the rocket was lost before attempting to splash down in the Indian Ocean, a sign that more work needs to be completed on the vehicle.
That reusability gives SpaceX the potential to drive down the cost of lofting satellites and space telescopes, as well as people and the things they need to live in space.
Here’s what else to know:
Thursday’s flight demonstrated new capabilities for Starship. In addition to reaching orbital speeds, the Starship vehicle opened and closed its payload door and managed to move several tons of liquid oxygen between two tanks within the rocket, a key test needed for future missions.
The Starship system consists of two stages — the Super Heavy rocket booster and the upper-stage spacecraft, which is also called Starship. The company intends both to be fully reusable in the future. Read more about Starship .
Thursday’s launch was the third of Starship. Here’s a recap of what happened last time .
Super Mario Bros. Wonder Producer Says There's Room for 2D and 3D: 'Everyone Should Enjoy Them Both'
Nintendo shares how it returned to mario's sidescrolling roots with wonder in a brand new way..
If you uploaded a Super Mario Maker course with cheap hidden blocks, unfair enemy placement, or just overall haphazard design, I'm sorry to say that Nintendo might have judged you for it.
During Nintendo's Super Mario Bros. Wonder panel at GDC, legendary Nintendo developer Takashi Tezuka was discussing how Super Mario Maker gave players the ability to freely design courses under the same conditions as each other. But Tezuka admitted, "However, when we played the posted courses, and let’s keep this here, some of them were not very good.”
Aside from the added bonus of throwing shade at some Mario Maker designers out there, Tezuka's wider point tied into how level design is the X factor that can make controls, sound, graphics, and enemies either fall flat or come alive. The Super Mario Bros. Wonder panel was home to some interesting insight about how Nintendo returned to Mario's 2D roots to create something brand new.
Reimagining 2D Mario
Tezuka and Super Mario Bros. Wonder director Shiro Mouri kicked off the panel by discussing the long wait for a new 2D Mario game. 2012's New Super Mario Bros. U was the last traditional sidescrolling Mario game until Wonder came along last year, and Tezuka simply said they'd just been busy making other types of sidescrolling games like Super Mario Maker and Super Mario Run: "Honestly, 11 years just went by", he said.
But Tezuka insisted that 3D Mario games haven't replaced 2D games, saying, "People may think that 3D Mario games have taken their place... I think everyone should enjoy them both. Do you think that's too much to ask?" The pair discussed the difference between 2D and 3D Mario, with Mouri saying a merit of 2D games is that it's easier to experience the game's design as it was intended. They also added that in 2D Mario games, the developers spend as much time as possible adjusting courses until the very end of development, which is much easier to do than when developing a 3D game.
Mouri and Tezuka approached development of Super Mario Bros. Wonder with the mantra of "big changes". As Mouri pointed out, elements of the original Super Mario Bros. like warp pipes, Super Mushrooms, and hitting blocks has become normal over time, so the team wanted to create a 2D Mario game full of new secrets and mysteries. Mouri thought, "If I'm going to change the environment anyway, I may as well go hard," which led to the beginnings of Wonder Effects like wiggling warp pipes and singing Piranha Plants.
Nintendo developers have previously shared the collaborative nature of Super Mario Bros. Wonder's development , and Mouri and Tezuka expanded on that during the GDC panel. "Nintendo believes everyone on the team is a game designer," Tezuka said, explaining the brainstorming sessions to come up with different Wonder Effects. The idea for the Wonder Quiz effect came from a programmer in his first year at Nintendo, demonstrating that everyone's ideas were on the table.
We also learned about another Wonder Effect that didn't make the cut, where Mario would turn into a giant, 8-bit, blocky version of himself, trying to avoid getting eaten by Wonder's new block-eating Gnawsher enemies. This was cut because it was impossible to strategically avoid enemies, resulting in an unfocused mad dash to the goal.
As for the future of 2D Mario, Tezuka said it all comes down to thinking about what will be the core of the game, and that he hopes the presentation got people interested in 2D game development.
A Kind World
The Nintendo developers also took some time to discuss Super Mario Bros. Wonder's online multiplayer modes. Nintendo took an interesting approach to online play, where shadows of other players from around the world could help each other find secrets and reach the end of a level.
Mouri said he wanted to create online gameplay that "would make you want to say thank you" to a stranger, adding, "We help people around us when they are in trouble... When you have a team made up of people with that mindset, there’s a good chance something good will come out of it. This holds true in game development as well... For [Wonder], we wanted to create a kind world like that, where online play is where you act not for yourself, but for the people around you.”
This led to the development team settling on the theme of subtle connection, and Tezuka said this is just one solution to what online play looks like for a Mario game.
All of Nintendo's experimentation with Wonder's development paid off, as we called it "the true next step for 2D Mario platformers" in our review .

Incredible New Frieren Cosplay Shows How the Fantasy Anime Hit Could Work in Live Action
What time frieren: beyond journey's end episode #28 releases, produced by madhouse, based on the manga by kanehito yamada and tsukasa abe.
Frieren: Beyond Journey's End episode #28 will air in Japan at 11 p.m. Japanese Standard Time (JST) on March 22, 2024 . It will be simulcast on Crunchyroll at 8 a.m. Pacific Time (PDT), 10 a.m. Central Time (CT), and 12 p.m. Eastern Time (EST) . For Frieren fans in the UK, the episode will be released at 18:00 Greenwich Mean Time (GMT). The release date for the dubbed version of the episode is unknown at this time, but it will likely premiere on Crunchyroll or Funimation later.
What Happened in Frieren: Beyond Journey's End Episode #27?
The first part of episode #27 of Frieren focused on the aftermath of the second stage of the First Class Mage exam, where Fern damaged the prized staff she received from Heiter. When Frieren suggested she buy a new one, she was upset at her for the insensitivity. However, Frieren tried her best to repair the staff, searching all over town for someone who could put it together. Richter, one of the examinees who failed, ran a magic shop and he was able to repair the staff. This beautiful moment showed the progress Frieren made in trying to understand others' feelings despite her awkward and aloof nature.
The unexpected happened when Serie, the most knowledgeable and powerful mage , stepped in to proctor the third test. Because there were so many examinees remaining due to Frieren, Serie wanted to reduce the number. When Frieren found out that Serie was in charge of the exam, she immediately knew she would fail due to their past interactions. However, she was confident that Fern would pass, and she told Serie that she would be blown away by her student. Indeed, she was, as Serie was so impressed she tried to recruit her as her student, but Fern declined. In the end, Fern passed the First Class Mage Exam while Frieren didn't.
Frieren Embarks On Her Next Journey
The whole point of Frieren and Fern taking the First Class Mage Exams was to travel to the northernmost region of the continent, an area inhabited by many demons. As such, nobody was allowed to pass without being accompanied by a First Class mage. Now that Fern has achieved that rank, the three can continue their journey north to meet the souls of their loved ones. The final episode of Frieren: Beyond Journey's End will reveal the results of other examinees, such as Denken and Wirbel, and see Frieren, Fern, and Stark start their new adventure.
Don't miss the finale of Frieren: Beyond Journey's End season 1 when it airs on March 22 on Crunchyroll.
