Taking Back Sunday (formed in 1999) is an American post-hardcore and alternative rock band from Amityville, New York, in the U.S.

Prior to forming Taking Back Sunday, rhythm guitarist Eddie Reyes played in a number of seminal post-hardcore bands including Mind Over Matter and the Movielife. With the band recording their debut self-titled EP, original bass player Jesse Lacey left the group to form Brand New. Guitarist John Nolan invited his North Carolinian friend Adam Lazzara to play bass, but he ended up on lead vocals and Shaun Cooper came in on bass. After the release of their EP Taking Back Sunday began to tour relentlessly alongside the likes of Brand New and The Reunion Show, which would set the scene for their future touring endeavours.

The band’s full-length debut arrived in 2002 with the tongue-in-cheek and highly transparent name “Tell All Your Friends” released through Victory Records. It was the band’s first taste of commercial and critical success aided by the singles “Cute Without the ‘E’ (Cut from the Team)”, “Great Romances of the 20th Century” and “You’re So Last Summer”.

Following the departure of John Nolan and Shaun Cooper in 2003, replaced by Fred Mascherino and Matt Rubano, Taking Back Sunday opened for Blink-182 and appeared on the 2004 Vans Warped Tour. Soon after came the band’s sophomore release “Where You Want To Be” on July 27, 2004. The album debuted at No.3 on the Billboard 200 and following high-profile appearances on Jimmy Kimmel Live! and the Spider-Man 2 soundtracks, cemented the band as a forerunner among melodic hardcore and commercial emo bands. The release was followed again by an extensive and exhaustive tour schedule including stops on the Warped Tour and several North American festivals.

Taking Back Sunday made their major label debut in 2006 with their third full-length “Louder Now” which attempted to capture some of the energy of their distinctive live show. Released through Warner Bros. the album was led by the single “What’s It Feel Like To Be A Ghost?” and resulted in appearances on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno and Late Night with Conan O’Brien.

In 2007 Fred Mascherino left the group to focus on his solo album with The Color Fred, citing many the band’s problems regarding writing songs. Taking Back Sunday has subsequently release the albums “New Again” in 2009, “Taking Back Sunday” in 2011 and “Happiness Is” in 2014, along with an EP entitled “Faith (When I Let You Down)” in 2011. Since 2011 the original Taking Back Sunday line-up has returned, playing both on subsequent releases and at live shows.

Live reviews

Emo stalwarts Taking Back Sunday are titans of the live circuit. Hailing from Long Island, NYC, the five-piece rockers built a veritable platoon of fans through the energy, dedication and enthusiasm of Adam Lazzara & Co. – and that's a facet of the band, fifteen years deep into their career, that isn't showing any cracks, or any signs of waning in the slightest.

Peppered with bona fide tunes like “Cute Without The E (Cut From The Team)”, “Great Romances Of The 20th Century”, “MakeDamnSure”, “A Decade Under The Influence” and “Timberwolves At New Jersey”, their sets are eclectic masterclasses in pop-punk and emo-rock. Sodden with emotion – obviously a steadfast hallmark – they bound and leap and gallop and screech across the stage, with Lazzara whipping his mic (he famously knocked out their former guitarist a few years ago), and jumping into the crowd with vigour. They're surprisingly down-to-earth fellas, which, for a band renowned for being white-hot sex symbols, is a commodity indeed. If you're looking for a frenetic, sweat-inducing two hours of shoutalong entertainment, Taking Back Sunday will deliver on all fronts. These aren't shows for sitting at the back or standing and doing the awkward head-bob foot shuffle combo.

I first saw Taking Back Sunday and the NIA in Birmingham when they supported Lostprophets on their Liberation Transmission tour. I had never heard of this American band before and I was really impressed. So impressed that I purchased their album Louder Now and was not disappointed, my favourite track is What's it feel like to be a Ghost.

Their next album New Again was introduced to me through Kerrang TV with Sink Into Me which was accompanied by an awesome video. I love Lonely Lonely on that album too. I have not been able to see them in Birmingham since then but have purchased all of their albums save for the album Taking Back Sunday which I was lucky enough to win in a competition run by Kerrang Radio and it was signed too, even better.

Their latest release, Happiness, has some great tracks on it, my favourite being Stood a Chance.

I would recommend this band to everyone. Their music is melodic but has a strong kick to it also

This band know how to please a crowd and get them rocking!

This was the second time I saw Taking Back Sunday live, the previous time being in 2011, and this time was so much fun I'd say it was one of my favourite gigs I've ever been to.

The setlist was very different from a few years ago, meaning we got to hear songs that nobody would've expected to hear, including a bunch of album tracks from early albums.

They seem to know exactly how to craft a fan-service set list, while still getting to show off a few of the songs from the new album the tour is supporting, making everybody happy whether a new fan or old.

Highlights were 'You Know How I Do', 'Error Operator', 'You're So Last Summer' and 'Number Five with a Bullet'.

I had a blast and recommend anyone who like me grew up with Lazarra's lyrics and their first couple of albums soundtracking my youth go and see them and do your teenage-you a favour :)

They started the show by saying they were going to play their new album, Tidal Wave, in its entirety. And they did. The crowd was pretty subdued, and the longer it went on, the more people seemed annoyed. Lots of people talking and ignoring the stage. Then TBS left the stage after finishing Tidal Wave, after about 40 minutes. Everybody was like, "is that it ...?"

Five minutes later, TBS came back on stage and announced they were ready for the "second part of the show." Then they proceeded to play a full set of nothing but their hits. The crowd went insane. That part of the show was pretty great.

Basically, it was like TBS was their own opening band ... and the opener wasn't very good. :-P

Taking Back Sunday is a band that even through many line up changes and creative leads in their history have been able to stay consist throughout their record output and their live output. It's been a great thing to witness for almost 20 years.

Their front man Adam is what i call the emo Steven Tyler, always interjecting with humorous banter in between songs keeping the energy of the crowd through the whole show.

They've built up a great repertoire of songs that almost any deep cut from any album will be met with immediate glee by the crowd and commence another sing along.

Don't miss your chance to see them live, you won't regret it.

Always enjoy seeing Taking Back Sunday live! I've been a fan since 2002 and 'You're So Last Summer' stole my heart. Then 'Bonus Mosh Pit Pt. II' quickly became my go to song on a weekly basis since then!!! I Love that they are doing smaller venues like The Intersection in Grand Rapids,MI and St. Andrew's Church in Detroit,MI. I'm a California girl currently with a Grand Rapids zip code. Any time they are 200 miles within reach.... I'm there. The experience is never disappointing and always takes me back to that first show.... quite possibly a Sunday.

First of all let me say thank you to Songkick. I love when y’all are in charge of a show. Things go so much easier with the tickets and I hope y’all do alot more shows.

Taking Back Sunday never fails to disappoint, but they only played an hour. They said the venue had a 10:00 curfew.

That was a bit disappointing. Other than that we rocked out at Barricade and had a great time watching one of our all time favs. This made our 22nd time to see them.

Thank you Songkick!

Fantastic high energy show thanks to the highly talented band and boosted by the wonderful audience. I had an absolute blast during all 20 songs played not a single moment of the performance dragged. Adam is a very charismatic front man but all the band members have their own personality up on stage which really helps them give an engaging performance.

It was pretty dope! They played their whole new album and then hits from the first three albums. Energy was great. Sold out show but still able to move around alright. The first opening band was impressive enough for me to buy their album. The second band, not so great. Over all definitely worth it.

breona-willis’s profile image

Horrible openers, the first two bands were too much and screaming loud. The venue couldn’t figure out the sound, couldn’t hear the artist sing hardly at all and then the screaming! Taking Back Sunday wasn’t what I thought it was going to be. Left after 2 songs, highly disappointed!

Taking Back Sunday: Staying Sane on an Endless Tour

By Christian Hoard

Christian Hoard

T oday we split the crowd open,” says Taking Back Sunday guitarist Eddie Reyes, checking in from a Warped Tour stop in Vancouver. “We were like, ‘When we start the song, do fucking Brave-heart. ‘ You had 2,000 kids on one side and 2,000 kids on another running into each other. It was insanity.” The incident is typical for the five Amityville, New York, rockers: Not only does their raucous punk attack frequently result in minor injuries to the band members, they’ve got a strong hold on their rabid and expanding audience, having sold more than 350,000 copies of their debut, Tell All Your Friends, with little radio or TV airplay.

“When we were recording the first record,” says singer Adam Lazzara, “we said, ‘If we could just sell 300 records, that’d be awesome.’ Now, talking to the kids that understand it, it just blows my mind.” Lazzara’s wounded crooning, good looks and ability to inspire Dashboard Confessional-like singalongs have certainly helped younger audiences understand, though the band also credits much of its adrenalized sound to Reyes, who has been dubbed “mayor of the Warped Tour.”

Come for the Torture, Stay for the Poetry: This Might Be Taylor Swift's Most Personal Album Yet

Matty healy is taylor swift's unlikely inspiration and six other takeaways from 'ttpd', hardy enters his bartending era on 'gin and juice' cover, taylor swift, post malone go mad in stunning 'fortnight' video with ethan hawke cameo.

After Reyes founded Taking Back Sunday four years ago, the band suffered an almost comic series of lineup changes in 2003 that included the defection of covocalist John Nolan. “The press made us out to be horrible people,” Reyes says. “They don’t know who we are. We don’t bother nobody!” Having weathered intraband fighting that nearly killed their new album, Where You Want to Be, Taking Back Sunday are just trying to stay sane on what seems like one endless tour. “We started a kickball league,” says Lazzara. “Us and [New Jersey emo punks] Thursday are on a team. Taking Back Thursday are going to run away with the championship.”

Taking Back Sunday Setlist: What to Expect at the 2024 North American Tour

  • Copied to Clipboard

taking back sunday tour 2004

The festival circuit is so last summer for Taking Back Sunday , who will set out on an extensive headlining tour across North America in 2024. After leading the 2023 iteration of Sad Summer Festival , the emo rock elders will find themselves a long way from Long Island for much of the cross-continental trek supporting their latest album, 2023’s 152 .

Taking Back Sunday will unveil a completely fresh setlist on the upcoming tour that has been in the works since late last year, when the band told Alternative Press that “the set will be a good mixture of albums, and the reception for 152 has been so positive that we can’t wait to get out there and play some of those songs for the first time.” Although the group performed many of the new cuts during their annual hometown Holiday Spectacular in December, the album’s official tour, which begins in May, is surely where fans will want to be this summer.

Coachella 2024: Day 3 highs and lows include Kesha's surprise cameo, Taking Back Sunday, more

taking back sunday tour 2004

The Day 3 of the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival doesn’t have quite the same level of excitement as Day 1, when the art instillations are new and your feet aren’t so worn down. But even if you were exhausted or partied too hard for Tyler, the Creator or Dom Dolla the night before, Sunday still offered plenty of opportunities for fun.

Whether you were seeking a chill vibe to unwind after a long weekend or an upbeat artist to reenergize you for the final day, here were some of the highs and lows from the third day of Weekend 1.

Coachella Day 3 high: Reneé Rapp brings out Kesha for fun afternoon set

Whether you grew up as the 2010 song “TiK ToK” was topping the charts (raising my hand) or as the addictive social media app TikTok was becoming Gen Z’s biggest fad, the Sunday set from pop star and “Mean Girls” actor Reneé Rapp offered something for you.

Five songs into the electric set, Rapp introduced a special guest with the words: "Please welcome who I consider the hottest person ever, KESHA!" The crowd was thrilled as the two broke into a duet of Kesha's 2010 banger, "TiK ToK."

The best part came when Kesha changed the song's opening words to "Wake up in the mornin' like f*** P Diddy" instead of "feelin’ like P Diddy," a clear reference to the rapper's rape and sexual assault accusations as well as recent home raid (on March 25,  Homeland Security Investigations agents searched his Los Angeles and Miami homes  as part of an ongoing sex trafficking investigation). Kesha left the stage after the song, but it was exactly the type of moment that make Coachella’s midday sets great.

Coachella Day 3 high: Taking Back Sunday keeps Coachella's nostalgic vibes going

The '90s nostalgia at the festival hit its peak on Saturday with standout performances from No Doubt , Sublime and Blur. While rock band Taking Back Sunday technically formed in 1999, many of their biggest hits are more than two decades old at this point, offering a similar sense of nostalgia to the large crowd gathered at the Mojave tent on Sunday (because how could they have played on any other day?).

Led by frontman Adam Lazzara, who danced across the stage and relished the chance to perform, Taking Back Sunday’s set opened with “A Decade Under The Influence,” and they kept the energy up for other hits like “Liar (It Takes One to Know One)” and “Cute Without the ‘E’ (Cut from the Team).” While Taking Back Sunday isn’t quite as rare to see as No Doubt — the performance Sunday marked the start of a new nationwide tour for the New York band — they held nothing back for their Coachella performance.

Coachella Day 3 high: Khruangbin, Hermanos Gutierrez play soothing, groovy sets

After a long weekend of thrilling DJ sets and rap and pop performances, I wouldn’t blame festivalgoers for seeking out something more pensive and mellow on Sunday — and they hopefully found that in a pair of bands, Khruangbin and Hermanos Gutierrez.

Khruangbin, the Texas trio that blends a wide range of soul, psychedelic rock and other instrumental music, played an excellent set at the Outdoor Theatre on Sunday, with some songs from their new album, “A LA SALA,” released earlier this month, as well as from other projects such as “Con Todo el Mundo.” The band members barely said a word throughout their set, just letting their music do the talking as many in the crowd (including yours truly) swayed and danced along.

A few hours earlier, the Sonora tent was treated to a performance by Hermanos Gutierrez, a Latin instrumental band led by Ecuadorian-Swiss brothers Alejandro and Estevan Gutiérrez. (The instrumentalist duo is also joining Khruangbin for an upcoming tour, before heading to the Ryman Auditorium in Nashville in May.) The brothers played a soulful set, using several guitars, hand drums and a steel guitar for their desert-inspired soundscapes like “Hijos Del Sol” and “El desierto.” If you needed something soothing after a long weekend, those sets were the move.

Coachella Day 3 low: Realizing the weather should've been this good all weekend

“It’s a beautiful day,” Lazzara from Taking Back Sunday told the rowdy crowd at the Mojave tent – and man, he was right. With temperatures in the low 70s in the peak of the afternoon, the weather pulled through for festivalgoers on Sunday. While the sun was still beating down on the afternoon performances, the breeze combined with the lower temps for a much more bearable day.

While Friday was a hot one during Weekend 1, our real prayer is for people heading to Weekend 2 — with current forecasts showing high temperatures in the mid-90s for all three days. We can only hope that Mother Nature will take it easy on Coachella next week, but Sunday was a great start.

Coachella Day 3 low: Getting the order of the headliners wrong

I wrote this recap before Doja Cat’s headlining performance on Sunday night, though I’m sure she’ll do a great job to please her “Kittenz” diehards and newcomers alike. However, I can’t shake the feeling that Doja Cat should’ve been the chaotic, high-energy performance that's fitting for a Friday night, while Lana Del Rey’s terrific, dreamy performance — including an emotional appearance from Billie Eilish — would’ve better matched the chill Sunday vibes. But hey, what do I know?

Coachella Day 3 low: Not getting even more time to hear Lauryn Hill perform

Doja Cat’s performance Sunday night marks the first time that a female rapper has headlined the Coachella festival, and our only question is — what took so long? Don’t get us wrong, Doja Cat is a deserving talent, but with so many talented female rappers, this milestone should’ve been checked off a while ago.

For future acts, perhaps Goldenvoice could look to a legendary female rapper: Lauryn Hill, who sang a few of her songs, "Ex-Factor" and "Lost Ones," before welcoming fellow Fugees member Wyclef Jean to perform “Fu-Gee-La,” during YG Marley’s Sunday set on the main stage. While this year’s lineup clearly prioritized 90’s rock legends, it’s time that we get some 90’s hip-hop included near the top of the billing. Hill would be an excellent place to start.
