TripSavvy / Leticia Almeida

There’s nothing worse than arriving excitedly at your destination to find that your toiletries have spilled all over your suitcase. Or to be the person who holds up the line at security while the TSA agents discard your oversized liquids. Both of these scenarios are easily avoided by investing in a set of appropriately sized, 100 percent leakproof travel toiletry bottles. There are lots of options out there in terms of bottle quantity, size, and design, with the right one for you depending on factors such as how long you’ll be traveling and the complexity of your beauty routine.

To help you narrow down the choices, our team of travel experts put 14 toiletry bottle sets to the test. Each one was scored for ease of use, quality, design, performance, and value, with average scores used to determine the winners of categories ranging from “best budget” to “most durable.”

  • What to Look For

Why Trust TripSavvy

Best overall, liquisnugs premium leak-proof silicone travel bottles.

  • Ease of Use 5 /5
  • Quality 5 /5
  • Design 5 /5
  • Performance 5 /5

Very secure, with no leaks during testing

Stick to vertical surfaces

Easy to stay organized

Lack of variety

The LiquiSnugs Premium Silicone Travel Bottles offer flawless performance at a price so reasonable our tester was shocked by it. The set includes two 2-ounce bottles and two 3-ounce bottles, both of which adhere to TSA carry-on regulations. We liked the flexibility afforded by the two different sizes since there are always products we need more and less of on vacation. We were able to easily fit all four in a quart-sized Ziploc bag simultaneously without placing pressure on any of them. All bottles are made of flexible, food-grade, BPA-free silicone, making them easy to pack and dispense.

With a dripless valve and bottleneck design, the bottles are advertised as 100 percent leakproof—a claim we can support, with no spillages even after being dropped and thrown around repeatedly during testing. We liked that the bottles’ wide mouths made them simple to fill, empty, and clean as needed. Other highlights include the suction pad on the back of each bottle (great for attaching them to the bathroom wall) and the changeable labels. Options for the latter include shampoo, conditioner, sunscreen, soap, and lotion, enabling you to switch up the uses on each trip.

Best Budget

Vitog travel bottles kit.

  • Ease of Use 4 /5
  • Performance 4.5 /5

Multiple dispensing methods

Comes with several functional extras

Good value for money

Capacity could be larger

Retailing for half the price of our already affordable overall winner, the Vitog Travel Bottles Kit is a no-brainer for budget-conscious buyers. It includes six 1.4-ounce bottles and two 0.4-ounce bottles. The larger ones consist of two pump bottles with a removable clip to prevent accidental deployment, two spray bottles, and two flip-cap bottles. The smaller ones are miniature cream jars. All eight are made from clear PET plastic, which we found durable yet lightweight enough for travel. We also liked that we could easily see how much product was left.

We appreciated the thoughtful inclusion of a pipette, a funnel, and a spatula to help with decanting products from their original containers. They made the bottles relatively easy to fill, although we did experience some spillage when decanting thick body lotion. Nevertheless, there was no leaking or visible wear and tear after our intensive testing process. The set also includes a sheet of labels and a clear plastic toiletry bag. The only real drawback? None of the bottles are particularly big, making this option suitable for short trips only.

Cadence The Originals Set

  • Design 4.5 /5
  • Performance 4 /5

Unique design

Performed well throughout testing

Customizable

Very expensive

Limited capacity

The Originals from Cadence are small, hexagonal capsules with screw-top lids that connect magnetically together in any shape or configuration you like. Aesthetics are at the forefront of this brand, as you can choose different colors for each capsule as well as printed, switchable, magnetic labels. In fact, they look so cute that you could even buy toiletries in bulk and decant them into these capsules for use at home. Sustainable practices like these are reinforced by the fact that the capsules are made from 20 percent recycled ocean-bound plastic.

We love that the capsules’ wide mouths and rounded interiors make them effortless to fill, use, and clean. They’re also 100 percent leakproof, waterproof, and airtight, as proven by our testing process. We found them incredibly durable and can’t imagine a scenario that would result in them being punctured or crushed. They are small (each one carries just 0.56 ounces), which could be a drawback. However, a capacity calculator on the brand website suggests you can carry approximately a week’s worth of products, depending on how regularly you use each one.

Number of Bottles: 6 | Sizes: 6 0.6-ounce | Materials: Hard plastic

Most Durable

Mrsdry travel bottles.

  • Ease of Use 3.5 /5
  • Design 4 /5

Soft yet rugged silicone construction

Effective leakproofing

User friendly

No diversity in size or design

If your primary concern when packing liquids in your hand luggage is leaking, you’ll love the Mrsdry Travel Bottles Set. It consists of four 3-ounce bottles, each made of thick silicone that feels ultra-durable, and they stood up perfectly to our squeeze and drop tests. We were particularly impressed with the bottles’ no-drip valves, which successfully prevented leaks. All four bottles use the same shape and dispensing method—a pro for those who want lots of capacity for fewer products, and a drawback for those with a more complex personal care routine.

Having said that, we did feel that this set is so reasonably priced, there’s nothing to stop you from buying multiple sets if you have more products to pack. Instead of labels, the bottles come in four separate shades to distinguish between them. We also liked that their wide opening makes them easy to fill, even with thicker liquids and gels. And when it comes to cleaning them, the bendable silicone easily accommodates a bottle brush. All colorways include a transparent carry case.

Number of Bottles: 4 | Sizes: 3 ounces | Materials: Silicone

Best Variety

Morfone 16 pack travel bottles.

  • Ease of Use 4.5 /5
  • Quality 4.5 /5

Good array of containers

Burly silicone handles rough treatment

Jar lids are weaker than expected

Multicolored style may not suit everyone

The Morfone Travel Bottles Set caters to travelers with an extensive beauty routine. With 10 containers in a wide variety of shapes, sizes, and dispensing methods, you can take a broad range of products in just the right quantities for your time away. Options are as follows: two 1-ounce spray bottles, two 3-ounce squeeze bottles, two 2-ounce squeeze bottles, two 1-ounce jars, and two 0.3-ounce jars. We were impressed by the capacity of the largest bottles, which we felt could easily hold at least four washes’ worth of shampoo and conditioner.

The bottles are made of durable yet flexible food-grade silicone, with wide mouths for easy filling and cleaning. We appreciated the inclusion of two scoopers, a funnel, and a cleaning brush to help with these tasks, as well as a sheet of labels. Most of the containers held up well to our durability tests with no leaks or spills. The only exception was one of the jars, which suffered a broken lid. The set comes in a transparent carry bag and could fit into a quart-sized Ziploc (a TSA requirement) with some skillful maneuvering, although it was tight.

Number of Bottles: 10 | Sizes: 2 0.3-ounce, 4 1-ounce, 2 2-ounce, 2 3-ounce | Materials: Silicone

Best for Larger Capacities

Insfit tsa carry-on approved containers.

Great value for money

Well-designed lids

Choice of cute color palettes

Can be finicky with certain products

The INSFIT set is ideal for those who like to keep things simple with only a handful of essential products, but who also tend to travel for longer and therefore need as much capacity as TSA will allow. It features four identical 3-ounce silicone bottles large enough to hold at least one to two weeks’ worth of shampoo, conditioner, body wash, and sunscreen (or similar). The bottles are squeezable, which makes dispensing simple, although we found that thicker lotions and gels were easier to squeeze if the bottle was at least half full.

Other highlights include fully removable caps and wide mouths for mess-free filling and easy cleaning, and three-layered lids that are essentially leakproof. Even during our pressure test, caps remained securely in place, and afterward, the bottles still looked brand new. In fact, we were shocked to find out how affordable this set is given its evident quality. We also liked the stylish, see-through carry bag and the fact that there’s a special place on the caps to stick the included labels so that they adhere properly.

Best for Backpacking

Matador flatpak toiletry bottle.

Ideal for reducing heft and bulk

Thoughtful design elements

Proved durable during our testing

Difficult to fill with thicker consistencies

Made of waterproof 30D Cordura ripstop nylon with proprietary welded construction, the Matador FlatPak Toiletry Bottles are by far the most technical option on this list. With their flat-pack design and sturdy quality, they’re designed especially for adventures and expeditions where saving on space and weight is a priority . With a capacity of 3 ounces each, they’re five times lighter and 3.5 times more compact than standard silicone bottles, and pliable enough to fit into tight spaces: the ultimate backpacking companion.

We found them easy to fill with any liquid that was the consistency of shampoo or thinner. Thicker gels and lotions were tricky since the mouth wasn’t as wide as that of standard travel bottles. Still, any mess is easy to clean off the waterproof exterior. They fit easily into a quart-sized Ziploc, and we love the snap hook for attaching to the outside of your backpack for on-the-go use. The loop also features a spot for writing a description of the contents with a permanent marker. As expected, the packs survived all our tests with zero leaks or signs of damage.

Number of Bottles: 3 | Sizes: 3 3-ounce | Materials: 30D Cordura ripstop nylon

Our overall favorite was the LiquiSnugs Premium Travel Bottles set. These bottles stood out for their durable, leakproof silicone construction and thoughtful extras including adjustable labels and individual suction pads. For the most budget-friendly option, choose the small yet sturdily versatile Vitog Travel Bottles Kit .

Upon receiving the bottles, our first step was to examine their overall quality and design and note any unique features. Then, we filled at least three of the bottles in the set: one with lotion, one with micellar water, and one with shampoo. For each one, we noted how easy it was to fill without spilling, how easy it was to clean if spillage did occur, and how appropriate each bottle would be for holding different types of liquid. We also tested how easy it was to open the bottle and dispense the product inside.

Next, we compressed the bottles in our palms to mimic pressure. We shook them, rolled them, squeezed them, and threw them to stimulate rough handling in transit, noting how well they withstood this treatment. Our final test was to put all of the bottles from the set into a quart-sized Ziploc bag, and then inside a toiletry bag. Then, we dropped them from waist height three times, always from different angles, to see whether any breakages or leaks occurred and whether the bottles showed any signs of wear and tear.

Each set was scored on a scale of one to five for ease of use, quality, design, performance, and value. Average scores were used to determine our category winners.

What to Look For in Travel Toiletry Bottles

Durability is key when choosing travel toiletry bottles since containers that are easily punctured or cracked will result in a mess that’s at best inconvenient and at worst potentially expensive or upsetting depending on how much product is wasted and whether any other items in your carry-on are affected. Look for options made out of sturdy hard plastic or thick, flexible silicone, then check user reviews to get an idea of how the construction holds up under real-life travel conditions. If you’re planning an extreme adventure, technical options like the waterproof flat-pack bottles from Matador may be worth the extra expense.

Leakproofness

A bottle doesn’t have to break for leaks to occur—all it takes is a poorly constructed seal or lid. Look for bottles with a triple-layered leakproof cap and jars with a secure screw top. Pump bottles should come with a removable clip that prevents them from being deployed accidentally. Again, user reviews help check how efficient these measures are (it’s easy for a brand to advertise their product as leakproof, even if it’s not). Some brands, like Cadence, actually guarantee the efficacy of their leakproof design. Just in case, we always recommend storing toiletry bottles in a waterproof bag or Ziploc as a second line of defense.

If you plan on packing your toiletry bottles in your carry-on bag, you must make sure that none of them exceed the TSA-approved limit of 3.4 ounces (100 milliliters). Some sets are made up of identical large bottles of around 3 ounces, giving you the maximum allowable capacity for each of your products. However, because all bottles must fit in a single quart-sized Ziploc bag, this limits the number of bottles to around four.

If you have more products to pack, you may prefer a set that divides this capacity between a greater number of smaller bottles and containers—especially if you only require some of your liquids in very small quantities. The length of your trip will also dictate how big you need your bottles to be unless you only plan on using your carry-on liquids as a backup in case the full-size versions in your checked luggage get delayed.

Toiletries can be stored in opaque, translucent, or transparent bottles of any color as long as each individual bottle does not exceed the maximum capacity limit. For carry-on bags, most authorities including TSA set that limit at 3.4 ounces. Liquids can be in their original container or decanted into any container of your choosing (even one that’s labeled incorrectly), as long as these size restrictions are adhered to.

Most airport authorities—including TSA—rule that bottles containing liquids, aerosols, gels, creams, and pastes cannot exceed 3.4 ounces (100 milliliters) if you wish to pack them in your carry-on luggage . In addition, all of these bottles must fit inside a quart-sized Ziploc bag and be screened separately from the rest of your luggage at security. Containers that exceed this limit will not be permitted, even if the volume of the product inside is less than 3.4 ounces (for example, if you have a half-used bottle of conditioner). Note that these restrictions do not apply to checked luggage.

Although toiletry bottles don’t have to be labeled from a legal perspective, many people like to do so to ensure they don’t end up brushing their teeth with expensive moisturizer, or vice versa. Some travel bottles come with waterproof stickers, especially for this purpose, and you can also purchase them separately online. This is a better option than writing on a standard office label by hand since toiletry bottles frequently get wet and ink can run and cause staining or become illegible. Alternatively, a permanent marker applied directly to the bottle could be an option if you’re always going to use the same container for the same product.

Being sustainability-minded while traveling isn’t always easy, but a little foresight can help travelers make a difference no matter where they are. Environmentally-conscious products like these eight travel accessories enable us to take ecofriendly action before we even venture out on our next trips.

1. Welly Traveler Bamboo Water Bottle

Buy now: $33, wellybottle.com ; amazon.com

Globally, 1 million plastic bottles are bought each minute , and approximately less than half are recycled. Ecominded companies have rallied to create reusable alternatives, like the 18-ounce Welly Traveler. The company produces reusable water bottles from premium food-grade stainless steel and sustainably-harvested bamboo, with BPA-free plastic and silicone under the cap. The company also donates 1 percent of sales annually to building clean-water wells in undeveloped countries through the nonprofit charity: water.

2. Koffie Straws

Buy now: $12 for 2 straws, koffiestraw.com ; packagefreeshop.com ; amazon.com

In recent years, single-use plastic bans have been enforced by a growing number of hotel companies , major airlines , and even entire governments . Ecoconscious travelers can take reducing plastic usage into their own hands by opting for the FDA-approved KoffieStraws . The silicone straws are reusable, washable, and safe under high temperatures (unlike plastic, which can leach toxins into your beverage). Their flat design makes them slide easily into to-go cups, and they’re malleable enough to tuck into a purse or carry-on. Silicone ash is biodegradable and compostable, too, so if you need to dispose of them, the company encourages users to burn the straws instead of throwing them away.

3. LunchSkins Paper Bags

Buy now: $4 for 50 bags, amazon.com

Skip the plastic baggies and start packing your midflight snacks in LunchSkins bags. Made from natural wood pulp that has been ground and pressed to form a naturally grease-resistant barrier, the 100 percent recyclable bags are plastic- and BPA-free and devoid of toxic chemicals and waxes. They’re resealable, too, so you don’t have to worry about accidentally dislodging your peanut butter sandwich as you scramble through airport security lines.

Stop buying travel-size minis of your toiletries and opt for reusable bottles instead.

4. Cadence Capsules

Buy now: from $14, keepyourcadence.com

Made from recycled ocean-bound plastic , these capsules from AAPI-owned brand Cadence eliminate the need to buy miniatures of your favorite travel toiletries. Simply dispense up to 0.56 ounces of your favorite face wash, moisturizer, etc. into each capsule from the larger bottle you keep at home. They’re seriously leak-proof, too. Sold individually and in sets, each capsule magnetically attaches to the others so you can build a honeycomb of sorts.

5. By Humankind Bamboo Toothbrush

Buy now: $11, byhumankind.com

Bamboo brushes benefit human health as well as the environment: The toothbrush from By Humankind is a natural alternative to the plastic-handled brushes that dominate the industry and ultimately end up polluting oceans or in landfills. The handle of the toothbrush is made entirely of bamboo and the bristles are made from castor oil. If you pull out the bristles after use, the handle can be composted. By Humankind is deeply committed to the environment—all the company’s packaging comes without single-use plastic, and it offsets 100 percent of its carbon footprint.

6. Nomadix Original Towel

Buy now: $40, nomadix.com

Made from postconsumer recycled plastic bottles, these fast-drying, stylish travel towels are a multi-purpose solution to any traveler’s towel needs—shower, beach, yoga, camping. Plus, purchases help fund the brand’s beach cleanup initiative, Bare Coast, which organizes coastal community groups to comb shorelines collecting plastic waste. Nomadix also donates 1 percent of its sales (not just profits) to environmental causes via 1% for the Planet.

7. Paravel Packing Cube Quad

Buy now: $65 for 4 packing cubes, tourparavel.com

Reusable, stylish Paravel packing cubes are made from recycled water bottles. Available in a pack of four, they help keep your luggage organized and can also be used in the place of plastic bags to conveniently separate dirty clothes from other items in your suitcase. Their most practical feature? A clear panel allows you to see what’s in each cube during quick repack sessions.

8. Pela Compostable Phone Case

Buy now: $60, pelacase.com

Last year, approximately 1.5 billion smartphones were sold around the world. That means an alarming number of plastic phone cases exist, too—and eventually end up in landfills. Pela designers have a solution to this problem: the world’s first 100 percent compostable phone case . When you no longer need it, the Pela Case will biodegrade in an industrial compost facility or even a backyard composter (but conveniently, not in your pocket or purse). Free of nasty compounds found in plastics, the cases are made of Flaxstic, a mix of flax straw materials and a compostable substance called bioplastic elastomer. In addition to being a B Corp, Pela is also Climate Neutral Certified.

How we tested

sustainable travel containers

No matter how organized I try to stay, my bathroom counter at every hotel always becomes cluttered with my many toiletries and hair products . The LiquiSnugs look like your classic silicone travel bottles, but they feature a clever suction cup on the back that allows you to stick them onto any shower wall—freeing up limited counter space. These are great for in-shower products like shampoo, conditioner, and body wash. This set of four bottles features two 3-ounce bottles and two 2-ounce bottles, so you can choose how much product you need depending on the length of your trip. Another smart design feature: Twist the top to adjust the label name so you won't forget what's inside. I've had these for about a year now and I consistently reach for these to pack shampoo and conditioner.

Pros : The unique suction cup design makes them great for shower products.

Cons : These occasionally will fall off shower walls if there's not a little bit of water to keep them in place.

sustainable travel containers

This Amazon bestseller is versatile enough for every type of traveler. The 18-pack from Tocelffe features four silicone bottles of varying size (two 3-ounce bottles and two 2-ounce bottles), four small jars for creams and serums, two spray bottles, two spatulas, a funnel, labels, and a cleaning brush. These all come in a waterproof toiletry bag that you can reuse to carry makeup or tech essentials. In this set, I find myself mostly reaching for the ultra-soft silicone bottles, which are great for products like body wash, face cleanser, and micellar water. Each of these bottles feature three-layer leak-proof tops so you don't have to worry about spills in your bag. Something I love about these bottles is how they can be bent and squeezed easily to get every last bit of product out of them.

Pros: Very affordable, comes in a clear toiletry case, and the bottles' wide opening makes it easy to refill. Cons: The small plastic jars are not as reliable as the silicone bottles in this set.

sustainable travel containers

If you're just looking for a few affordable no-frills travel bottles, these are for you. Available in a variety of colors, the silicone bottles do just what they say they will. They're leakproof, come in a set of four, and are easy to refill and clean. While there’s no bells and whistles, these three-ounce bottles pleasantly surprised me with just how much product they fit compared to some of the other classic silicone bottles we tested, making them an ideal option for a longer vacation. Plus, these have an average of 4.5 stars on Amazon with over 11,000 global reviews.

Pros: Versatility; available in many colorways

Cons : This set doesn't come with labels or a proper toiletry case.

sustainable travel containers

Another solid choice for travelers is this set of four 3-ounce silicone travel bottles. These are squeezable, leakproof, and versatile enough to use for everything from shower products and soaps to sauces and baby food. These reusable bottles are all the same size and each a different color so you can differentiate them. Bonus: This set comes in a transparent toiletry case to keep them all organized in.

Pros : This set is available in a dozen colorways; wide opening makes them easy to refill without needing a funnel. Cons : This set doesn't come with labels.

sustainable travel containers

If you prefer to bring along a bar of soap instead of using what's provided at the hotel, this compact soap box is a great travel companion. Inside, there's a soap mat that absorbs any excess water and prevents the soap from becoming mushy. I've used other plastic soap cases before without a mat and it always leaves a mess. This one features a silicone band that wraps tightly around the box for extra protection, and is about the size of a deck of cards.

Pros : Fits most commonly used soap brands, affordable, and features a simple-to-use design.

Cons : The soap box needs the band to stay secure so be careful not to lose it.

sustainable travel containers

I've been a fan of Cadence's capsules for a few years now. These leakproof, airtight, and watertight magnetic capsules are unlike any other travel bottles I've used and are a true game changer when it comes to packing your own beauty products. The individual capsules magnetically snap together to take up as little space as possible in your Dopp kit and are designed without any right angles or edges, so you get every last bit of product available.

The original .56-ounce individual capsules are great for weekend trips and storing small items like daily vitamins and safety pins. The Capsule Flex System allows you to customize your own bundle with your choice of small , medium , and large sizes, as well as The Extender —an add-on that allows you to increase the size of the bottle when you need more room. This makes it so easy to customize your travel routine, whether you want to pack extra product for longer trips or bring enough body wash for you and your travel buddy. With The Flex System, you can still choose your own label for each capsule (the labels are interchangeable), as well as the color and number of capsules in your bundle.

Pros : It's easy to get every last drop of product inside each capsule and they are so easy to rinse out and reuse. The custom labels can be swapped out depending on what you're packing.

Cons : These are the most expensive option on our list.

sustainable travel containers

I was eager to test out the Ries travel bottles after hearing a lot of buzz about the product and seeing them make their way into retailers like Sephora and Goop. These are a more elevated, aesthetically pleasing take on the classic reusable travel bottles you may have used in the past. Ries prioritized sustainability and design with these essentials: Each bottle is made from recycled plastic and features a large opening at the top, which makes it easy to refill and clean (not to mention, they're dishwasher safe). Travelers can purchases these bottles individually (a 3.4-ounce bottle or a 1.7-ounce bottle) or in a set with both sizes . My favorite thing about these bottles is the airless pump—I feel so glamorous while doing my nighttime skincare routine with these, and it makes it easier to use products like face wash or cleanser on the road. The bottles are pre-labeled (shampoo, conditioner, body, face) and you can twist the top to the side to conceal the opening, so product won't spill out.

Pros : Sustainably made; if you prefer a pump, these are for you.

Cons : On the pricier side; the bottles are a bit bulky and take up a little more room in my makeup bag than most travel-size products I use.

sustainable travel containers

Finally, a solution to my contact lens woes. I can't count the number of times I've stopped into a drugstore to buy a mini bottle of contact lens solution before heading out on a trip, or to pick up rewetting drops because I'm dealing with dry contacts while away from home. This compact case makes cleaning and caring for contacts on the go much easier—it comes with an easy-to-fill reusable dropper that gives me a long weekend's worth of solution, a contact case, and has a mirror to help get them in and out. (I don't like to fly in contacts, so this is particularly handy if I forget to switch to my glasses before leaving home.) It weighs next to nothing, and will fit in all but my smallest handbags, so I've been keeping it on me regularly, not just when traveling. — Madison Flager, senior commerce editor

Pros : It comes with a tiny pair of tweezers to make removing contacts from the case less messy. Cons : The contact solution holder isn't large enough for weeklong trips.

sustainable travel containers

I admit I've also been guilty of buying mini versions of my favorite contact solution. As much as I love reusable toiletry bottles for my skincare and hair products, I've never had anything that felt right for the consistency of my contact solution. I wear daily lenses, meaning I don't need a whole lot of solution with me when I travel, so it is a little frustrating to carry around a bottle that takes up precious space in my Dopp kit. Lately, I've been carrying about the Cauyuan eye glass case which comes with a super small dropper for contact solution. This refillable dropper holds just enough contact solution for weekend trips and shorter vacations and takes up such little space (I've even found myself tossing it in my handbag in case my eyes get a little dry.) This durable case keeps all of my eye care essentials together and protected, with a separate compartment for eye glasses, and another that holds the dropper, tweezers, a contact case, and a mirror.

Pros : All of my eyewear essentials are now in once place and stay organized; the dropper is small enough to fit in a tiny purse. Cons : The compartment for your eye glasses is on the small size—if you have thick or bulky frames, they might not fit.

sustainable travel containers

I've never found a reusable spray bottle for my perfume that I've liked, so I've always relied on buying miniature versions of each of my favorite fragrances. But let's be real—those travel-size perfume bottles are expensive! They're often made of glass, too, making them vulnerable to breaking in your luggage. Enter the Vonovo mini refillable perfume bottles: Each of these holds 0.2 ounces of your favorite scent, more than enough for a long vacation. This set comes with five spray bottles, so you can bring along any of your favorites—or all of them. And they are so easy to use—simply pull off the top of your full-size perfume, press the bottom of the mini bottle on top of it, and keep clicking until its refilled. Each of the bottles have a clear vial inside so you can see how much product you have left. My favorite part: These are so tiny—think the size of a lipstick— meaning I can even bring them with me on a date night when I'm only carrying a small purse .

Pros : Easy to refill and compact enough to fit in even the tiniest of travel bags Cons : These spray bottles wont match the look of your full-size perfume and don't have labels, so you'll have to remember based on the color of the mini bottle you choose. Also, these can be refilled with the same perfume, but I wouldn't recommend reusing them with another scent.

sustainable travel containers

For those with a more rigid skincare or haircare routine, this 16-pack lets you bring along every last product you want—and it all fits into one reusable case. The set comes with four silicone bottles, four jars, two spray bottles, two scoopers, a funnel, and a cleaning brush. The variety means you can pack everything from soap and shampoo to serums and sprays in here, and the cleaning brush makes the bottles easy to clean and re-use. I like this set best for packing my more expensive skincare serums and creams in the small jars that have a scooper to use.

Pros : A variety of types of containers

Cons : The toiletry case the bottles come in isn't the best quality.

sustainable travel containers

The Kitsch Ultimate travel set includes leakproof holders that are compact and lightweight enough to pack in a purse or tote bag . In addition to three flat pouches, this set also comes with two pump bottles, two mini jars, one mini funnel, one mini spatula, and one mini pipette. This set is best for a longer trip—say, a European vacation or a cross-country road trip —as you can store a lot more shampoo, conditioner, and lotions in the pouches without going over any TSA limits (plus, they'll get lighter as you use them).

Pros : The flat pouches are easy to pack and take up less room in a Dopp kit than bulkier bottles.

Cons : The pouches are a little bit harder to refill than bottles with a wide opening.

sustainable travel containers

If you're packing toiletries for your entire family , this 21-pack of travel bottles has you covered. This package comes with four silicone bottles, four cream jars, four toothbrush covers, two spray bottles, two pump bottles, two trowels, a funnel, and labels to keep everything straight. Whether it's a trip to Disney World or multi-generational cruise , this set makes packing for the whole family easy.

Pros : These come with toothbrush covers–a nice travel accessory that none of the other options on our list offers.

Cons : Not ideal for weekend trips or light packers.

These Sustainable Travel Capsules Make Packing Toiletries So Much Easier

They’re my new favorite way to store skincare, haircare, medications, and more.

Here at Travel + Leisure, we're always looking for the best products that make traveling a little easier. As an editor who's tried out plenty of toiletry bags and travel-size skin and haircare products, I was excited to test Cadence's sustainable and innovative capsules that I've been seeing for months all over my Instagram feed . To my delight, this convenient new way to travel with toiletries lives up to the hype and is now an essential part of my packing routine. And,  Travel + Leisure  readers can unlock extra savings on the game-changing capsules; use the code  TravelLeisure  at checkout   for $10 off your first order of $100+.

Cadence capsules are made from BPA-free, ocean-bound plastic. Each has a capacity of .56 ounces, which the brand says will hold one to two weeks worth of skincare products, two or more weeks of serums, two to three days worth of haircare products, and 17 tablets, such as Advil. I found that I had plenty of room to spare after filling my capsules with a weekend's worth of products recently. With a screw-on and magnetic lid, they're leakproof, airtight, and watertight. You can choose from seven colors and a wide variety of premade labels for each capsule, or you can type your own custom label for an extra $3.

The brand sent me a set of three capsules to try out, and after using them on a recent weekend trip, they'll definitely be a staple in my toiletry bag for upcoming travel. I used the capsules for my go-to moisturizer and two face serums. When I was packing, it was easy to just pump my products into the containers and twist on the lids. Plus, the containers' wide openings made it easy to use my products while I was on the go (no precarious squeezing or scooping that some other travel containers require). The lids are easy to take on and off, but they feel completely secure once they're tightened, so I never have to worry about spills in transit (an all-too-common problem if you've used travel-size products in the past).

The set of three capsules was perfect for my weekend trip where packing light was necessary, although, for an upcoming weeklong vacation, I plan to purchase three more to complete my set. You can also buy a set of 12 for even longer trips, or individual capsules , should you realize that you need an extra for your new favorite face cream or hair oil, or even one to keep your jewelry safe during your trip.

To buy: keepyourcadence.com , $42 for three capsules

To buy: keepyourcadence.com , $76 for six capsules (originally $84)

To buy: keepyourcadence.com , $143 for 12 capsules (originally $168)

Hundreds of shoppers also rave about the travel capsules, with many calling out their convenience and sleek look. "It's the perfect container to hold whatever you need and toss it in your bag when you are running out the door," one reviewer wrote.

Another reviewer complimented how much easier the capsules have made packing. "These have drastically reduced the space my toiletries take up when traveling," they wrote.

If you're looking for a new way to store your toiletries and small essentials when you travel, consider the space-saving, sustainable Cadence capsules before your next trip. They've certainly become a go-to for this travel writer. Don't forget to use the code  TravelLeisure  at checkout   for $10 off your first order of $100+.

Plastic-Free Travel Containers

Q: How often should I replace my plastic-free travel containers?

Q: Are plastic-free travel containers safe to use?

A: Plastic-free travel containers are just as safe to use as plastic ones. They are made from materials that are non-toxic and free of harmful chemicals. You can feel confident using them, knowing they will not leak toxins into your food or drinks.

Q: Do plastic-free travel containers save money?

A: Plastic-free travel containers can save you money in the long run. They are a more sustainable option that will last just as long (if not longer) than plastic ones. You won’t have to keep replacing them as often, so you’ll save money in the long run.

Q: What are some of the best plastic-free travel containers?

A: Some of the best plastic-free travel containers are made from glass, stainless steel, or bamboo. These materials are durable and safe to use. They will not leach toxins into your food or drinks and will last longer if you take care of them. Glass and stainless steel are also easy to clean. Bamboo is a more sustainable option that is still durable and safe.

Q: How do I clean my plastic-free travel containers?

A: You can clean your plastic-free travel containers just like you would plastic ones. Glass and stainless steel are easy to clean with soap and water. Bamboo is a bit more delicate, so you may want to use a soft brush or cloth to avoid damaging it. You can also find bamboo-specific cleaning products that will not damage the material.

41 Must Have Sustainable Travel Essentials

Please note: This post contains affiliate links.

After looking up and seeing the ocean choked with plastic bags, diapers, utensils and cups while surfacing from a dive in Ambon, Indonesia, my husband and I committed to identifying sustainable travel essentials to minimize single use plastics . I hope some of my favorite eco friendly travel products resonate with you, perhaps sparking gift ideas for friends and family.

raja ampat diving underwater reef scape

Shockingly, we learned the local ferry dumped all of its garbage overboard three times a day, littering the ocean and our dive resort’s beach in plastic. In addition to being horrifying and alarming , we both contracted throbbing ear infections from it.

Unfortunately, this is a common theme throughout the world. As avid scuba divers, we’ve been fortunate to explore remote islands in the Galapagos ,  Palau , Micronesia; Raja Ampat , Indonesia; and Anilao , Philippines. We’ve been shocked by the plastic bits littering these uninhabited places.

Given that less than 9% of plastics are recycled in the United States , the statistics are far lower in other parts of the world. Most countries don’t have the resources or infrastructure to deal with all the debris created from disposable items. By making small changes as travelers and shifting to sustainable travel products, we can help minimize the burden at home and abroad.

Eco-friendly Toiletries

Identifying eco-friendly travel toiletries can be a challenge. While small travel sizes are convenient, they create A LOT of waste . After discovering LUSH’s solid shampoos, conditioners and body lotion bars , I swear by them. They offer a variety of fantastic scents.

Not only will you save on weight, space and not have to worry about leaking containers, but you’ll also not leave any packaging or debris behind wherever you travel.

After experimenting with a variety of options, my favorites are:

Eco friendly shampoo bar

Sustainable Travel Products LUSH Jason and the Argan Oil

Jason and the Argan oil – a luscious Rose Jam scent and Moroccan Argan oil will keep your hair silky and smelling divine. The shampoo bars provide  80 washes !

Eco friendly conditioner bar

American Cream – a relaxing combination of vanilla, clary sage and lavender that softens and detangles your hair.

Eco friendly moisturizer bar

Sustainable Travel Essentials LUSH Solid Moisturizer Bar

Therapy massage bar –  a lovely orange, neroli and lavender scent combined with fair trade cocoa butter and shea butter is a great moisturizer.

TOP TIP: Buy the  tins for $3.95 to store/transport the solid bars. To maximize life , tilt them on an angle in the container to dry overnight. Otherwise, they get mushy and stick to the bottom of the tins.

LUSH doesn’t use palm oil , which lurks in many everyday products. Given the widespread demand and use, landowners chop down rainforests to plant palm oil, displacing orangutans and other vulnerable wildlife in Asia.

TOP TIP : When reading labels, avoid products that contain the following as these are other names for palm oil:

  • Sodium Laureth
  • Lauryl Sulphate
  • Palm Kernel Oil
  • Glycerel Sterate

If you do buy anything that has palm oil, look for this sustainably sourced palm oil logo on the label.

Certified Sustainable Palm Oil Logo

Other sustainable travel essentials

Using one of these bars saves the equivalent of three full shampoo bottles ! In addition to using compostable packaging, their products are vegan and palm oil free .

Sustainable solid shampoo and conditioner bars

Eco Friendly Travel Products Shampoo Bar Ethique Damage Control

Since I love the tingly feeling associated with peppermint, I recommend their Mintasy shampoo bar (previously known as Damage Control) . The coconut oil and cocoa butter in it also serve to moisturize.

sustainable travel containers

Their Guardian conditioner bar , which saves five conditioner bottles , is great for moisturizing your hair. This is always key for me after I’ve been hiking, scuba diving or swimming in the ocean.

sustainable travel containers

Ethique’s solid body polish is great for exfoliating rough feet and elbows . This innovative product uses cocoa butter to soften and pumice to smooth rather than using microplastic beads that clog our waterways. Opting for this product means one less plastic jar in landfill. I personally love the lime & ginger scent.

TOP TIP : My local San Francisco Athleta store started carrying Ethique products, so check if yours offers them too!

Eco friendly deodorant

In addition to plastic waste, deodorants and anti-perspirants can expose us to unwanted chemicals. While natural deodorants didn’t work for me in the past, the Ethique Botanica deodorant is a great zero waste alternative.

Rather than using aluminum, it uses magnesium hydroxide, zinc oxide and bamboo to keep you dry. And, the lavender and vanilla provide a pleasant, but not overpowering scent. After using it for heavy cardiovascular workouts, I can attest it works well.

Eco friendly toothpaste

Eco Friendly Travel Products Solid Toothpaste Bit

Bite toothpaste bits are a convenient plastic-free option to decrease the number of toothpaste tubes that enter landfills each year – currently 1 billion ! Not only does Bite package the toothpaste bits in a glass bottle , but they also send refills in compostable packaging .

To minimize their carbon footprint, all Bite products ship via ground. This is one of my favorite sustainable travel toiletries!

TOP TIP: I prefer the Fresh Mint flavor. They periodically offer limited release flavors such as pumpkin, lavender lemon, or champagne, which are worth trying.

Eco friendly mouthwash

Sustainable Travel Essentials Bite Mouthwash Bits

Bite also offers solid mouthwash bits with a convenient travel tin, which holds the equivalent of 5 travel mouthwash bottles . All you need to do is bite down, take a sip of water and swish for 30 seconds.

It contains a non-toxic fluoride alternative (nano-hydroxyapatite) to strengthen your teeth while also freshening bad breath with peppermint and eliminating cavity-causing bacteria with xylitol and erythritol.

Eco friendly bamboo toothbrush

Biodegradable Wowe bamboo toothbrush

Switching to a bamboo alternative is a sustainable and biodegradable option . Personally, I like the Wowe 4-pack toothbrush set as it covers my husband and me for six months.

TOP TIP : Remove the bristles before composting the brush as the nylon bristles are not biodegradable.

Eco friendly floss

Eco friendly dental lace floss

Refills are shipped in compostable bags and shipping boxes are made from 100% recycled material. I personally love the various designs and colors they offer for their refillable vials and value not discarding numerous plastic floss containers per year.

Eco friendly travel essentials Bite Floss

If you’d like to fulfill all your dental needs with one vendor, Bite offers compostable dental floss too. This vegan, plastic-free floss effectively cleans those hard to reach places between your teeth with a biodegradable material that decreases waste by providing a refillable, glass vial.

TOP TIP : After using both Dental Lace and Bite biodegradable floss, I prefer the Bite floss as it seems more durable and doesn’t break as easily when flossing between tight teeth.

Reusable make up wipes

Bamboo reusable makeup wipes

TOP TIP : Since they come with 3 colors in the set (pink, blue, white), allocate different sets for eye make up, face cleansing and nail polish removal.

Eco friendly biodegradable cotton buds

As a scuba diver, the thought of a tiny sea horse clinging to a plastic Q-tip floating in our oceans breaks my heart. These eco-friendly cotton buds are made from biodegradable bamboo and shipped in a recycled cardboard box. Cleaning ears or removing makeup with this sustainable alternative is a great solution.

Eco friendly body wipes

When camping or trekking, you may not have access to shower facilities. The Sea To Summit Wilderness wipes allow you to minimize waste by cleaning your body with compostable Viscose fibers rather than non biodegradable alternatives.

TOP TIP : I prefer the extra large size ( 8*12 inches or 20*30 cm) since I can fully refresh using just one wipe. I’ve used these camping in Yellowstone and Utah loved them!

Reef safe sunscreen

Thinksport Reef Safe Sunscreen

With coral reefs around the world facing challenges from rising water temperatures as a result of global warming, I’ve sought out reef safe sunscreens to use when kayaking, paddle boarding, snorkeling and diving.

Environmentally safe sunscreens use zinc oxide or titanium dioxide and exclude ingredients like octinoxate or oxybenzone. I commend all the places around the world now requiring visitors use reef safe sunscreen including Hawaii and Palau , Micronesia.

Think Sport is one of my favorite brands for both face and body. Learn more about my favorite reef safe sunscreens and sun protection products . My one wish is that the sunscreen came in an eco-friendly container rather than plastic.

Eco friendly travel products

Finding reliable sustainable travel accessories to pack both toiletries and clothing expedites  TSA airport screening  and  improves packing and unpacking efficiency .

Flanabags Airquart Travel Bag

sustainable travel containers

After using Ziploc plastic bags for years, I converted to this  TSA-approved, quart-sized bag for my carry on toiletries in 2014. In addition to easily ripping, Ziploc bags are not environmentally friendly.

Flanabags’ gusseted bottom (6.5” x 8” plus 1” gusset) allows me to fit more since I don’t have to worry about ripping this stylish and sturdy bag. The wrist strap also makes it  convenient to grab from the TSA bin after screening.

TOP TIP : They come in a variety of designs and make  great gifts/stocking stuffers . I recommended them to my in-laws for our trip to Takayama, Japan , and they love them as well.

I’ve been using the same one for eight years !

Flanabags Clear Pack Gallon

sustainable travel containers

After accidentally leaving two Kindles in seat back pockets, I now bring my Flanabags Clear Pack Gallon , an eco friendly travel product, on every flight.

It fits all of my carry-on essentials that I bring on the plane – (my neck pillow, eye mask , Kindle , Bose noise cancelling earbuds , essential oil, No jet lag and compression socks ). You can also use this for sporting events that require clear bags. The wrist strap makes it easy to carry .

Eagle Creek Pack-It Original Packing Cubes

While my husband initially mocked my organizational tendencies when I suggested packing cubes, he now uses them for both business and personal travel .

These eco-friendly packing cubes are tremendously helpful for dive trips too. Unloading all of our dive gear on the main deck and carrying only four cubes to our room is  super easy !

I also no longer accidentally leave any clothes behind in drawers/closets. I’ve been using my same packing Eagle Creek packing cubes for 15 years and they are still good as new.

A  great starter set is:

Eagle Creek Clean Dirty Packing Cubes

Two Pack-It Tube Cubes Slim – use one for underwear and one for socks

sustainable travel containers

TOP TIP : Buying  different colors for each family member allows to you to easily distribute cubes.

Eco friendly travel items

Eco friendly travel bottles.

Go Toob Eco-Friendly Travel Bottles

Sustainable travel containers

sustainable travel containers

To carry my supplements, vitamins and medications, I use the small 0.4 oz Go Tubbs . Since I travel with a limited amount of various medicines, I don’t need full size bottles.

This eco friendly travel container’s compact size is ideal . I stack two on top of one another in my Eagle Creek quarter cube .

I also put one in my Flanabags Clear Pack Gallon for those things I might need to access during the flight (melatonin, ibuprofen, etc).

sustainable travel containers

TOP TIP : I always fill one of my Go Tubbs with a teaspoon of Vicks Vapo Rub and keep it in my pocket. It is great to combat people’s smelly feet or body odor on planes and trains.

By wiping a small amount under your nose, you’ll mask the offending odor . It works like a charm. And, if you get sick or congested while traveling, it’s great to have on hand.

I transfer these sustainable travel containers from my Flanbags to my pocket for easy access throughout the journey. My husband used to make fun of me for this travel hack and now always carries his own to mask undesirable smells.

Zero waste travel kit

Reusable water bottle.

sustainable travel containers

I’m incredibly proud of the fact that San Francisco International Airport (my home airport) eliminated all plastic water bottles in August 2019. Water is only offered in glass, aluminum or paper containers.

Since I use ice to chill my drinks where possible, I prefer wide mouth water bottles for ease of inserting ice and filling. My two favorite brands since they never leak are Nalgene and Hydro Flask .

It’s also key for using my SteriPEN (more on that below) to sterilize my water. I love that Hydro Flask keeps my drinks cold for hours, motivating me to drink 64 oz of water every day.

SteriPEN Ultraviolet Water Purifier

SteriPen Ultraviolet Water Purifier

Having contracted giardiasis while traveling in Northern China and getting violently ill from supposed “filtered/bottled” water in India and Egypt, I now prefer to sterilize water myself.

TOP TIP : I use the  SteriPEN Ultra UV Water Purifier. Since it’s  rechargeable, you don’t have to worry about batteries. Each charge allows for  50 water treatments . To use it, make sure you travel with a Nalgene or Hydro Flask wide-mouth water bottle . You won’t be able to get the SteriPEN into a water bottle with a narrow opening.

Reusable utensils

To Go Ware Reusable Bamboo Utensils

TOP TIP : Whenever we go out to eat in San Francisco, we bring our own reusable takeaway containers to bring leftovers home.

For flights, I bring my own food, snacks and reusable utensils aboard to avoid the waste caused by all the disposable plastic given to each passenger.

I commend airlines that are shifting away from plastic towards compostable options and hope more follow suit.

Reusable straws

sustainable travel containers

Despite the fact that I rarely use straws, I always carry eco-friendly straws with me for smoothies or frozen drinks and offer them to friends as well. While San Francisco has led the way in banning plastic straws and offering compostable alternatives, many parts of the United States and world still automatically put them in drinks.

TOP TIP : Anytime I order a drink, I proactively request “no straw please .” I’m always delighted when the server says they don’t use plastic straws.

I personally love my stainless steel straw set since it includes curved and straight straws. For those that chew on straws or want to avoid stains on your teeth while drinking coffee, you might prefer the biodegradable Silicone Koffie Straw . I also like my bamboo straws . It’s all a matter of personal preference. All the reusable straw sets I’ve bought come with a cleaning brush, which is key for sanitizing inside your straws.

For me, this heartbreaking video of a plastic straw being extracted from a sea turtle’s nose is a great reminder of why it’s important to shift away from plastic straws.

Eco friendly travel bag

Eco friendly travel bag

By traveling with your own sustainable travel bag , you can decline the plastic bags that many shops offer when selling you food, trinkets, etc. I buy Chico bags as they are made from recycled plastic bottles and stuff into their own sack, packing down to the size of a lemon. I always travel with one of these reusable bags no matter where I go.

Reusable snack bags

Stasher Reusable snack bags

These reusable snack bags are also dishwasher and microwave safe . You can also use them in your freezer or Sous vide at home. A truly multi-purpose eco friendly alternative to plastic Ziploc bags.

TOP TIP : My favorite sizes are the sandwich (28 oz) and snack (12 oz).

Reusable coffee cup

Contigo Stainless Steel Insulated Reusable Coffee Mug

If you prefer something stainless steel and insulated to keep your coffee/tea hot for longer, I highly recommend Contigo products. I adore my spill proof 16 oz stainless steel mug and have used it whenever I indulge in my favorite mint tea at my local Philz Coffee.

I’ve been using mine for eight years and it’s still going strong! It keeps drinks hot for seven hours and I can attest the spill proof lid works. Since I have mad skills for dropping and spilling things, this lid has saved me MANY times.

If you prefer glass, 12 oz Keep Cups are great as they have a cork band to make sure you don’t burn your hand when holding your hot coffee. Given my propensity for breaking things, glass is not a great option for me.

Eco friendly wash bag.

Scrubba eco-friendly wash bag

This pocket-sized washing machine has an internal, textured wash board. This will be a KEY tool for me during the 30 day Snowman trek, which I hope to do in Bhutan in Fall 2023.

Eco friendly travel wash

sustainable travel containers

Since Campsuds ( a biodegradable, environmentally friendly soap ) is very concentrated, you only need a ½ to 1 cap per load. My husband and I typically share a 4 oz bottle on a three-week trip and often come back with soap leftover. This multi-purpose, eco friendly travel wash can be used as shampoo, body wash and dish soap. And, the leak proof Nalgene bottle is key to eliminate any spills in your bag

Another option is the Sea To Summit Pocket Laundry Wash , which comes with 50 soap leaves in each pack.

TOP TIP : Make sure your hands are completely dry before touching these or they will all stick together. I learned the hard way!

Sustainable shoes

Sustainable Travel Essentials Allbirds Wool Runner Mizzles

My in-laws gifted a pair of Allbirds to my husband before they were all the rage. Now, we both have and LOVE them! It’s pretty much the only shoe I wear. When traveling, I typically travel with three pairs of shoes – my Allbirds, hiking boots and flip flops. They are super easy to slip on/off at the airport and aboard long-haul flights.

These eco friendly shoes are made from – wool for the shoe, sugarcane for the soles and a recycled plastic bottle for the laces. And, they ship in boxes made from 90% recycled material. Allbirds recently released the Mizzle , which uses thicker wool and is water repellent.

Sustainable Travel Essentials Allbirds Tree Dashers

Since I’ve started running more this past year, increasing my mileage from two to seven miles at a time, I also recently invested in Allbirds Tree Dashers . Made from eucalyptus , these supportive and durable shoes are super comfortable to run in and come in a variety of color combinations.

TOP TIP : Since the Wool Runners and Wool Runner Mizzles run small and don’t come in half sizes, size up when ordering . If you typically wear a 6, go to a 7. If you wear a 6.5, you might want to consider a size 8. The Tree Dashers come in half sizes and are true to size. A bonus is the fact that the shoes are machine washable ; you just need to remove the insoles and laces before washing.

Solar power charger

When trekking/hiking in an area where you don’t have access to electricity, a solar charger is helpful. After a few friends raved about their solar chargers, I decided to invest in one. This 25000 mAH  portable charger will be KEY for my upcoming Bhutan treks, including the month-long Snowman trek in Bhutan in 2023.

I hope you found some sustainable travel products and eco friendly travel essentials to simplify your travels.

I love this list!!!! I have a lot of these in my bag and I just started switching over to the eco-friend shampoos and conditioners. I’m going to put the UV sterilizer on my list because you’re right, you never know what is sterilized and what isn’t. You and I, with our sensitive stomachs, need to look out for ourselves. I’m going to also get some new bamboo toothbrushes from your link. I’ve had the same one for a while, and need to have them on hand.

Lauren, That makes me so happy to hear! I just finished crafting this new blog post based on items I present about and new discoveries I’ve made in my quest to eliminate all the single use plastics that I can. So glad you like the eco-friendly shampoos and conditioners too. The UV sterilizer is a game changer for us and saves SO many plastic bottles. After two unfortunate situations where I was violently ill from water I was told was bottled or filtered, I no longer trust it and prefer for the purification to be in my control. Both of those situations were serious enough that I almost needed to be hospitalized so I’m not messing around. I’m delighted you found a number of new ideas and solutions!

Eco-Friendly Containers, Toiletries and Other Travel Essentials

We are reader-supported. When you buy through links on our site, we may earn affiliate commission.

Planning on getting away for a while? Bring along these eco-friendly travel containers, bug repellant, laundry pods, and other must-haves to make your trip as sustainable as possible. They’ll make your life easier without harming the environment.

1. Deodorant

When it comes to staying fresh, deodorant is a must-have. However, look for one that will have minimal ecological impacts. Aerosolized deodorant isn’t great for the environment. Instead, choose a solid stick deodorant with plastic-free packaging, and if you can, opt for one that has natural fragrances.

Wild deodorant comes in a refillable aluminum case and operates on a subscription service. Native makes a plastic-free deodorant stick in a paperboard tube, as does Primal Life Organics.

2. bug repellant.

Chemicals like DEET and permethrin are common ingredients in bug spray. However, they can also end up in waterways. Look for biodegradable products containing peppermint, citronella, lemongrass, rosemary, and other natural insect repellants. Good brands include Murphy’s Naturals, Quantum Health, and Babyganics, the latter of which makes a travel-sized bug spray.

The U.S. recycles less than 6% of its plastic , which means most of it is going to waste. Rather than buying drinks in disposable bottles at the gas station, bring along a trusty thermos to keep your café au lait hot or your latte iced. Eco-friendly brands include Hydro Flask and Tree Tribe, but there are many more to choose from. Look for a thermos made primarily of metal or ceramic.

4. hair care products.

Shampoo and conditioner bars aren’t just good for the environment — they also make perfect travel companions. 5. laundry detergent.

Ditch the plastic laundry soap bottle or plastic pods and use powdered detergent instead. It often comes in a recyclable cardboard box. Many major brands — including Tide, Arm & Hammer, and Gain — sell powdered detergent in cardboard boxes. To bring just a small amount with you on vacation, store it in a travel-sized metal, wood, or glass container.

6. sunblock.

There are two main ingredients to avoid when looking for an eco-friendly sunscreen — oxybenzone and octinoxate. These chemicals damage coral reefs , so if you’re headed to the beach, you’ll need to find an environmentally friendly alternative. Stream2Sea sport sunscreen, Badger Clear sport sunscreen, and All Good sport sunscreen are great choices.

7. dental care products.

Traveling Panda sells a kit containing two travel-sized bamboo toothbrushes. The plastic-free package even comes with 10 toothpaste tablets so you don’t have to worry about finding a carry-on-sized tube of toothpaste. That’s one less thing to stress about!

As for floss, most types are made of plastic and come in a plastic box. A great alternative is silk or bamboo charcoal fiber floss. You can even find biodegradable dental flossers to get those hard-to-reach areas.

8. eco-friendly containers.

Whether you want to pack your favorite liquid shampoo, lotion or soap, you can bring it along in eco-friendly containers that don’t contain plastic. Some examples include EcoLuxe bamboo travel bottles, small aluminum toiletry bottles you can easily find on Amazon, and small glass cosmetic jars with screw-on lids.

9. lip balm.

You don’t have to give up convenience to cut ties with plastic. Did you know you can buy lip balm in a cardboard push tube? You can also buy it in small glass or metal tins, which are perfect for traveling. Brands that sell eco-friendly lip balm include Eco Lips and Ethique.

The most eco-friendly product with which to lather up is bar soap in paper or cardboard packaging — or, better yet, no packaging at all. Some plastic soap bottles are recyclable, but the pumps usually aren’t. A bar of soap is also more portable than liquid soap. Look for biodegradable options for the most environmentally friendly product.

11. reusable straw.

A straw lets you easily slurp up the last of your iced matcha without taking off the lid — or ruining your lipstick. It’s also helpful for many people with disabilities who would otherwise have a hard time drinking. If you prefer or need to drink through a straw, bring along your own reusable one. Many restaurants and cafes are phasing out single-use plastic straws for environmental reasons.

12. charger.

Did you know you can power your phone with the sun’s energy? Bring along a solar charger to juice up your devices without fossil fuels. It works especially well if you plan to spend a lot of time outside, but you can also use a solar charger in sunny windowsills.

sustainable travel containers

13. doggie bags.

If you’re bringing along a furry friend, you’ll need to pick up after them. Plastic bags are convenient but bad for the environment. In 2018, the world generated 4,200,000 tons of plastic bags, wraps, and sacks, and recycled just 10% of them. Instead of plastic, use bags made from cornstarch, vegetable oil, or paper to do the deed.

sustainable travel containers

14. diapers.

Are your little ones coming with you? Don’t forget to pack reusable cloth diapers or eco-friendly disposables. While there’s no such thing as a truly biodegradable disposable diaper, there are brands that make less-harmful diapers containing less synthetic material. Some brands include GroVia and Seventh Generation.

Seventh Generation Baby Diapers

15. wet wipes.

If you’re bringing diapers, you probably also need wipes. Did you know there are wet wipe brands that don’t contain plastic?

Eco-friendly products include Terra bamboo wipes, Ecoriginals natural bamboo wipes, Eco by Naty unscented wipes, and Dr. Butler’s organic, chemical-free wet wipes. Aside from changing a baby, wet wipes are also handy for removing makeup and freshening up on a hot day.

16. travel journal.

A journal is a great way to record your adventures, especially if you’re vacationing off the grid. Bring a travel journal made from recycled paper to write about your haunted city walking tour, authentic French breakfast, and camel ride across the desert — smells and all.

sustainable travel containers

PAPERAGE Recycled Lined Journal Notebook

Journeying lightly.

No matter where you’re headed, go sustainably. Every choice you make has an impact on the environment — whether positive or negative — and it’s up to you whether you’ll leave the world a better place. Bringing eco-friendly travel containers, toiletries, and other necessities on your adventures is a great way to ensure future generations can keep enjoying travel.

Introduction to Travel Containers: Why You Need Them

Have you ever opened your luggage after a long flight, only to find your shampoo has leaked all over your clothes? Or maybe you’ve tried squeezing your favorite lotion into a tiny bottle, only to realize half of it is stuck at the bottom? This is where travel size cosmetic packagings come into play.

These nifty little gadgets, especially the best travel containers for toiletries, are a lifesaver for frequent travelers. They ensure your toiletries are stored safely, without any leaks, and are easily accessible when you need them . Whether you’re looking for the best travel bottles for shampoos or leak-proof travel containers for your creams, there’s something out there for everyone.

The Evolution of Travel Containers: A Brief History

Travel containers have come a long way. Back in the day, travelers would use glass bottles or metal tins, which were heavy and prone to breaking.

Then came the era of plastic bottles, which were lightweight but not always leak-proof. Fast forward to today, and we have silicone travel bottles, which combine the best of both worlds: they’re lightweight, durable, and most importantly, leak-proof. Over the years, as travel became more common and airline regulations stricter, the demand for travel-friendly containers grew.

This led to innovations like TSA-approved travel bottles, which are designed to meet airport security standards.

Find out the best travel containers

Types of the Best Travel Containers: From Bottles to Pouches

When you think of travel containers, bottles might be the first thing that comes to mind. But there’s a whole world out there! From silicone travel bottles for your shampoo to travel pods for toiletries, the options are endless. For liquids, you might prefer squeezable silicone bottles, while for creams, small jars or pouches might be more suitable. There are also specialized small containers like travel spray bottles for your perfumes or mists. And if you’re looking for something compact, travel size squeeze bottles or mini travel bottles might be just what you need. The key is to find what works best for your travel needs and the type of products you’re carrying. Let’s delve into the various bottle types and understand their unique features and best uses.

In conclusion, the world of travel containers is vast and varied. Your choice should be based on the type of product you’re carrying, the duration of your trip, and your personal preferences. Whether you’re going on a weekend getaway or a month-long expedition, there’s a travel container tailored to your needs.

Key Factors to Consider When Choosing Your Travel Containers

When it comes to choosing the best travel containers for your needs, several factors come into play.

  • Durability is paramount – you want containers that can withstand the rigors of travel.
  • Leak-proof designs are crucial to prevent any messy accidents.
  • The material, whether it’s food-grade silicone or BPA-free plastic , can affect the longevity and safety of your products.
  • Also, when come to refillable bottles, consider the ease of refilling . Containers with wide openings or those that come with tools like funnels or scoopers can make the process less messy.
  • Lastly, think about the size and how it fits with your travel plans. Are you a carry-on traveler, or do you check in your luggage? Your choice of containers can make a significant difference in your travel experience.

Explore the best travel containers

Material Matters: Plastic vs. Silicone vs. Glass

The material of your travel container can make a huge difference. Plastic bottles are lightweight and cheap, but they might not be the best for the environment. Glass bottles are eco-friendly and great for products that react with plastic, but they’re heavy and can break easily. Enter silicone travel containers . They’re flexible, durable, and can handle both hot and cold temperatures. Plus, they’re easy to clean and, most importantly, they’re leak-proof.

For those who prioritize sustainability, there are also eco-friendly options made of biodegradable materials. When choosing the best travel containers for liquids or creams, consider the material’s durability, weight, and environmental impact.

Size and Portability: Finding the Right Fit for Your Journey

Size does matter, especially when you’re trying to fit all your essentials into a carry-on. Travel size containers are perfect for short trips or for products you use sparingly . For longer journeys, you might want to consider larger travel shampoo bottles or lotion containers. But remember, airlines have strict regulations, especially for carry-ons.

TSA-approved travel bottles ensure you won’t run into any issues during security checks. They’re typically clear bottles, allowing security personnel to easily see the contents, and they adhere to the liquid restrictions set by the TSA. So, whether you’re packing a travel bottle kit for a weekend getaway or need travel size shampoo bottles for a month-long adventure, there’s a container out there that’s just the right size for you.

Travel size toiletries

Leak-Proof Designs: Ensuring Your Belongings Stay Dry

There’s nothing worse than opening your suitcase to find your toiletries have spilled everywhere. That’s why leak-proof travel bottles are a must-have. The best travel containers for liquids come with tight-sealing caps and are made of flexible materials like silicone, which can handle the pressure changes during flights without bursting. Some even have double-sealed designs for added protection. When shopping for the best leakproof travel bottles or travel containers for liquids leak proof, always check reviews to see how they hold up in real-life situations.

Eco-Friendly Options: Sustainable Travel Containers for the Conscious Traveler

With growing awareness about the environment, many travelers are looking for sustainable options. Biodegradable or recyclable travel containers are becoming increasingly popular. Silicone travel bottles, for instance, are not only durable but also eco-friendly. Some brands even offer refill stations for their products, reducing the need for single-use plastic containers. If you’re a conscious traveler, look for the best travel containers for toiletries that align with your values and help reduce your carbon footprint.

Maximizing Space: How to Efficiently Pack with Travel Containers?

Packing is an art, and travel containers are your tools. To maximize space, start by decanting products from bulky packaging into travel size containers. Using clear bottles or toiletry bottles for travel can also help you quickly identify products, saving you time. Stackable containers or travel bottle sets are great for organizing and ensuring everything fits neatly. Remember, it’s not just about fitting everything in, but also about accessing what you need, when you need it. So, think about the layout and how you’ll use the products during your trip.

Specialized Containers: For Cosmetics, Medications, and More

Not all travel containers are created equal. Depending on what you’re packing, you might need specialized containers. For cosmetics, travel makeup containers with compartments can keep your products organized and prevent breakage. If you’re carrying medications, look for containers with tight-sealing caps to ensure they stay fresh and uncontaminated. Fragrances can be stored in travel spray bottles, ensuring they don’t spill and ruin your belongings. And for those precious serums and skincare products, silicone travel containers or glass ones can preserve their efficacy. Remember, the right container can make all the difference in ensuring your products reach your destination in perfect condition.

Top Brands in the Market: Who’s Leading the Pack?

When it comes to travel containers, some brands have made a name for themselves. From offering the best leakproof travel bottles to innovative designs that maximize space, these brands have set the standard. They offer a range of products, from TSA-friendly travel bottles to luxury travel bottles for those who like a touch of elegance. When choosing a brand, consider factors like durability, design, and customer reviews. After all, a travel container is an investment in hassle-free travel.

Customization and Personalization: Making Your Containers Uniquely Yours

Traveling can be chaotic, and the last thing you want is to mix up your containers with someone else’s. Customization can be as simple as choosing travel bottles in different colors for different products. Some brands even offer the option to print your name or a label directly on the bottle. Pouches and travel toiletry sets might come with customizable labels or tags. Not only does this add a personal touch, but it also makes it easier to identify your belongings in a shared bathroom or crowded hostel.

Travel Container Sets: Coordinated Solutions for Organized Packing

Travel container sets are a game-changer for those who love coordinated and organized packing. These sets often include travel bottles, mini jars, and pouches, all designed to fit together seamlessly in your luggage or toiletry bag. They’re especially handy for those who carry a variety of products, from shampoos and lotions to face wash and serums. Many sets also come with accessories like mini funnels or spatulas, making refilling a breeze. Plus, having a matching set can make you feel like a pro traveler, even if you’re just heading out for a weekend getaway.

Safety and Regulations: TSA Guidelines and International Standards

Navigating airport security can be a hassle, but with the right travel containers, it doesn’t have to be. TSA-approved travel bottles are designed to meet the strict liquid restrictions set by airport security. Typically, these are clear bottles that can hold up to 3.4 ounces (or 100 milliliters) of liquid. When packing, it’s essential to place all your liquids in a single, clear plastic bag for easy inspection. While TSA guidelines are standard for U.S. airports, it’s always a good idea to check the regulations of any international airports you’ll be passing through. Being prepared can save you time and the heartbreak of having to throw away your favorite products.

Other to Consider Before Buying Travel Containers

Before you rush out to buy those cute travel bottles or the latest silicone travel containers, take a moment to consider your actual needs. How often do you travel? What products do you absolutely need on every trip? Do you prefer luxury travel bottles or are budget-friendly options more your style? It’s also worth considering the environmental impact. Reusable bottles are a great way to reduce single-use plastics. Also, think about the cleaning and maintenance. Can the containers be easily cleaned, or will they require special care?

How to Maintenance and Care for Your Travel Containers?

Proper maintenance of your travel containers not only ensures their longevity but also guarantees the safety and integrity of the products inside. Here’s a detailed guide on how to care for your travel containers, followed by a step-by-step tutorial.

Why Maintenance Matters:

  • Prevents Contamination : Regular cleaning prevents bacterial and fungal growth, ensuring your products remain safe for use.
  • Extends Lifespan : Proper care can extend the life of your containers, saving you money in the long run.
  • Ensures Functionality : Regular checks can help identify issues like cracks or loose caps before they lead to leaks or spills.

Step-by-Step Tutorial on Cleaning and Maintaining Your Travel Containers:

1. Empty the Container :

Begin by emptying out any remaining product from the container. This ensures a thorough cleaning.

2. Pre-Rinse with Warm Water :

Rinse the container with warm water to remove any surface residue. This makes the cleaning process more effective.

3. Prepare a Soapy Solution :

In a bowl, mix a few drops of mild dish soap with warm water. Avoid using harsh detergents as they can degrade the material of the container.

4. Scrub the Container :

Immerse the container in the soapy solution. Using a soft brush or cloth, gently scrub the inside and outside. For hard-to-reach corners, tools like mini spatulas or brushes can be particularly useful.

5. Rinse Thoroughly :

Rinse the container under running water to remove all soap residues. Ensure that no soap remains, as it can contaminate your products.

6. Dry Completely :

Allow the container to air dry completely. You can place it upside down on a clean towel. Ensure it’s thoroughly dry before storing or refilling to prevent bacterial growth.

7. Regularly Check for Wear and Tear :

Inspect your container for any signs of damage, like cracks or loose caps. If you find any, it might be time to replace the container.

8. Store Properly :

Store your containers in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. Extreme temperatures or prolonged exposure to sunlight can degrade the material.

9. Avoid Mixing Products :

If you decide to switch products, ensure the container is thoroughly cleaned to prevent cross-contamination. Residues from different products can react with each other, leading to potential skin irritations.

10. Periodic Deep Cleaning :

Every few months, consider giving your containers a deep clean. This can be done by soaking them in a solution of equal parts water and white vinegar for an hour, followed by a thorough rinse. This helps in disinfecting the containers.

A little effort goes a long way in maintaining your travel containers. Regular cleaning and checks ensure they serve you well for a long time, making your travels hassle-free and enjoyable.

sustainable travel containers

The first step toward eco-conscious traveling is to pack sustainable travel products so that you won’t leave behind plastic packaging that’s difficult or impossible to recycle.

Packing with sustainable travel products also helps you avoid using those travel-sized, single-use plastic shampoos and soaps that are provided in many hotels or homestays.

Let’s dive in for my top 10 sustainable travel products!

1. My favorite sustainable travel product

This collapsible water bottle is the best sustainable travel product

Collapsible water bottle by Nomader

  • Rolls up and tucks into your bag
  • Tuck it into a pocket
  • Wrap it around a wrist
  • Slip it into a carry-on bag
  • Lightweight and BPA-Free

The Nomader sells for $24.95 on Amazon

Perhaps the single biggest (and easiest!) sustainable travel tip I have up my sleeve is this water bottle that rolls up and tucks into your bag (or literally up your sleeve)!

This water bottle goes with me everywhere. Whether I tuck it into a pocket, wrap it around my wrist, slip it into my carry-on bag, or slide it into my over-the-shoulder holster (see below).

collapsible, reusable eco-friendly water bottle

This water bottle has helped me stay completely free of single-use plastic water bottles for nearly three years – even while traveling full time! The Nomader is a crucial addition to your green packing list.

Check out my 10 tips for ditching plastic water bottles (for good)

2. A collapsible coffee cup makes every morning sustainable

Sustainable travel products holiday advert

Collapsible coffee cup by Stojo

  • Collapses small
  • Comes with heat shield, lid, and straw
  • Good for hot and cold drinks
  • BPA-free, lead-free, phthalate-free, adhesive-free, and chemical-free
  • LFGB-certified

The 16-oz cup sells for $20 from Stojo

There is no doubt that the pandemic has changed so many things about the way that we travel. One of the things that makes me endlessly sad is the increased use of single-use plastic. It’s everywhere.

One of the best ways to avoid single-use plastic is to carry your own cups.

A sustainable coffee cup for road trips

On a recent month-long road trip in a camper van, I used this collapsible coffee cup by Stojo every single day. OK. You got me. I used it multiple times a day. The Stojo cup also doubles as an excellent beer or wine cup.

Stojo products are BPA-free, lead-free, phthalate-free, adhesive-free, and chemical-free. Stojo has also achieved LFGB certification for food-safe silicone products (which is more difficult to earn than FDA certification).

Green Gift Giving Guide for Travel Lovers

I love my Stojo cup, but it’s not the only cup I carry. In fact, I have two other cups that are often in my bag or in a pocket…

3. Perhaps my most used sustainable travel products…

reusable wine glasses are a go-to sustainable travel product

Bendable wine glasses & foldable bowls

  • Wine glasses bend to fit in pocket
  • Bowl and cup collapse flat to fit into bags or back pockets
  • Saves countless plastic cups at festivals or on planes
  • Bring a set of bendalbe wine glasses for group trips

For bendable wine glasses $24 on Amazon

Foldable cup and bowl set $33 from Sea to Summit

I carry a bendable wine glass that folds easily into the front pocket of my carry-on bag. I use it all of the time, but especially on flights.

reusable, collapsible wine cup

I try to use trains as much as possible, but as a full-time traveler, I am on enough planes in any given year to seriously challenge my individual effort at carbon neutrality.

It may seem like a small thing, but can you imagine if we all refused to use the single-use plastic cups that hold our wine, beer, or soda on a plane? Airlines would be forced to make a change.

Sustainable packing list freebie

Flight attendants are usually very surprised when I ask them to fill up my reusable glass, but they often thank me and confide that it’s really hard to throw away so many plastic cups after every single flight.

Because plastic recycling differs in every locality, most of the time it’s only paper products that get recycled after a flight. More often than not the cups that we use for our drink service are going straight into the trash.

This is the set of travel wine glasses that my friends and I have started to bring on every girls’ trip. We pass the cups out to anyone who doesn’t already have one.

I’ve watched this sustainable travel tip save countless single-use plastic cups. Especially on trips to New Orleans and Las Vegas where plastic cocktail glasses are everywhere.

sustainable travel containers

Tip:   The best way to reduce your onboard waste is to carry your trash off the plane and recycle it yourself. If you are drinking soda or beer, ask to drink it straight out of the can. Then save the can and recycle it when you leave. If the wine is in one of those individual bottles, ask for the bottle and recycle it yourself.

A small cup (and bowl) that folds completley flat keeps you plastic free on the road

In the picture below, I am holding my Nomader foldable water bottle along with my travel wine cup, but I have yet a third cup in the pocket of those pants ( the pants are eco-conscious as well! )

It IS possible to travel sustainably with these sustainable travel products

The third cup is for the food that I plan to consume at the festival or at the food truck. This cup folds completely flat and will substitute as a plate or bowl.

foldable cup for sustainable drinking or eating while traveling

When I am carrying a purse or a backpack, I bring along both a cup and a bowl like the foldable set sold from Sea to Summit .

In a circumstance (like a festival) when I can’t carry a bag, this small cup is the perfect sustainable travel solution for plastic-free eating on the go. It takes a little extra work, yes, but I always find a vendor who will fill my cup with food rather than handing me a single-use box or plastic container.

Foldable cups and bamboo utensils are sustainable travel products that fit right into a pocket!

4. Bamboo utensils are a go-to sustainable travel product

A bamboo utensil set is a must-have sustainable travel product

Bamboo utensils instead of plastic silverware

  • Easily fits into bags or pockets
  • Includes chopsticks
  • Includes straw
  • Clips onto bag or backpack

To-Go Ware set is $19.99 from REI or Amazon .

Along with the foldable cup and bowl that I carry, I always have my bamboo utensil set so that I never need to use plastic forks and knives. This durable set comes with chopsticks and a straw, and it has a convenient carabiner so you can hang it on your backpack, purse, or over-the-shoulder water bottle holster .

Sustainable packing list opt-in for men

5. A reusuable, collapsible box for leftovers helps reduce waste

this sustainable travel product makes saving leftovers a breeze

Grab-and-Go Box from Stojo

  • Lid snaps on
  • Perfect for leftovers when eating out
  • Great for picnics!

The 24-oz box is $20 from Stojo

Speaking of taking things to-go, the following sustainable travel tip is one of my favorites. Whether I’m at home or on the road, the Stojo Grab-and-Gox box almost always comes with me if I eat at a restaurant so that I can carry out my leftovers without using a single-use container.

All of the same eco-conscious and safety-conscious qualities of the Stojo collapsible coffee cup are true of the grab-and-go box. But did I mention that Stojo products are also dishwasher safe?! The grab-and-go box is just $16 from Stojo .

6. Traveling with your own towels is a savvy sustainable travel move

I learned this valuable lesson while walking a 500-mile pilgrimage across Spain. Bringing your own towels will always ensure you can quickly get clean on the road or take an impromptu dip on a hike. The following towels and wipes are now crucial items both for my Camino de Santiago packing list and for my standard packing list.

There are three types of towels to travel with:

sustainable travel containers

Wilderness Wipes

  • Clean surfaces (or your body) sustainably
  • Compost after using
  • Wipe down planes or trains before settling in
  • Great for an improvised shower while backpacking
  • Perfect for in-between shower days in the van
  • Ideal for early morning flights when you can’t shower

$9.95 for 36 wipes at REI or $10.45 for 12 wipes on Amazon

Note:  Though Wildnerness Wipes are compostable, they should not be left on the ground while hiking. Practice Leave No Trace principles. It’s best to actually compost the wipes rather than throw them away, so I carry my used wipes in a repurposed plastic bag or tin until I find a composting facility or farm. I’ve even carried them all the way home before. Unfortunately, the package is not compostable.

carrying your own wash cloth is a good sustainable travel move

A facial cloth that folds up small

  • Fast-drying towel
  • Doubles as a makeup remover
  • Folds up small

Fast-drying cloth sells for $6.99 on Amazon

a quick-dry microfiber towel is a key sustainable travel solution

Rainleaf microfiber towel

  • Folds into pouch and slides into backpack or bag
  • Keep it in your backpack for imprompt dips while hiking

Sells for $11.99 on Amazon

Tip:  Even when I do opt to use the towels provided by a hotel or hostel, I always opt-out of room service to conserve water.

Eco-Friendly Festival Packing List

Bonus Tip:  To reduce plastic consumption when staying in a hotel, remove the plastic bag from one garbage bin and collect all of your trash in that bin. Take out your own trash and replace the unused plastic bag in the bin before you leave.

7. The foundation to green packing:

Green packing is made easy with sustainable packing cubes

Eco-conscious packing cubes!

  • Durable to last for many trips
  • Organize your suitcase
  • Made from sustainable materials

See options below for pricing

I’m seriously jealous of anyone who has eco-conscious packing cubes, which may just be the foundation of all sustainable travel products packed into your suitcase.

Long before I realized the importance of traveling sustainably, I purchased my packing cubes and, while not made sustainably, they have changed the way I pack. Now my bag is beautifully organized.

Sustainable packing cubes make the foundation to a packing sustainably

But if I could do it over again, I would buy this pack of three packing cubes made from recycled polyester from the sustainable company tentree .

The tentree packing cubes are such a good sustainable travel product at such a good price (just $31 for all three cubes) that they are often sold out.

If that’s the case, try the Patagonia clamshell cubes .

While these are a little more expensive at $29-$49 (depending on size) per cube, they are seriously durable and made from 100 percent recyclable material.

I’m telling you, packing cubes will change the way you pack forever!

8. Solid shampoo, conditioner & lotion bars

Sustainable Products

Replace your liquids with solids

  • Reduce plastic consumption
  • Reduce packaging
  • Just add water to products that are already 90% water!

See below for solid sustainable travel products

Solid lotion bars bars

Sahara Nights Lotion Bar by Blendily

Let’s start with solid lotion bars because this is one of my favorite sustainable toiletry solutions.

I’ve tried a lot of lotion bars, and back when I was testing them all out, my favorite solution was the Moon Valley Organics Herbal lotion bar . It sells for $15.99 on Amazon or $11.99 from the sustainable online marketplace EarthHero .

18 sustainable lotion options , including a recipe to make your own lotion bars

But I mostly make my own lotion bars now! It’s so easy, and you can play with the formula that works best for your skin. Here’s my YouTube video detailing this seriously easy sustainable solution:

The latest on Youtube:

Solid shampoo and conditioner bars.

Going solid with your shampoo and conditioner bars just makes a ton of sense. Shampoos and conditioners are made of more than 90 percent water anyway.

Why not use a chemical-free bar that isn’t contained in a hard-to-recycle plastic container – and then mix it with the water from your shower?

sustainable travel containers

That’s exactly the sentiment that inspired Brianne West to start making shampoo and conditioner bars in her kitchen when she was a college student. Now her business, ethique , is a go-to for sustainable toiletry solutions! She makes my favorite shampoo and conditioner bars, which can be found on Amazon for $22.30 for the hair-care set .

solid shampoo and conditioners bars are the perfect sustainable travel product

9. Sustainable travel products for dental care

Sustainable dental products:.

  • Use toothpaste tablets instead of hard-to-recycle-tubes
  • Opt for plastic-free dental floss
  • Use plastic-free lip balm

See below for prices on these sustainable travel products

Toothpaste tablets

I’m using toothpaste tablets from by Humankind because they make my life a little easier with a subscription program. Every month, I get new toothpaste tablets in the mail in a recyclable envelope. by Humankind offsets the carbon footprint from shipping by investing in forest preservation projects.

The toothpaste is $15 for a two-pack and a mini glass container or you can subscribe for $12 (the container is free with a subscription), and two refill packets will come to you every month.

sustainable dental tablets

Tip:  I travel a lot so I tend to avoid subscriptions because I don’t have an address to send the products. But it’s seriously easy to manage your deliveries through the by Humankind online portal. Plus, I love it when they email me to say that my toothpaste is on the way because they also tell me how much plastic I kept out of the ocean by shopping for their sustainable travel products.

Plastic-free dental floss

Plastic-free dental floss is a must for your eco-friendly toiletries

Most dental floss is made out of nylon, which is, you guessed it plastic. Often floss is coated in a synthetic wax coating that is made from petroleum. And all of that comes packaged in a tiny little plastic container this is nearly impossible to recycle. GAH!

My favorite dental floss is the organic floss made by Radius that comes in a paper holder. Pros: It’s really cost-effective at $12 for a sustainable floss pack of three from Amazon and it is the best floss I’ve ever used in terms of comfort.

Cons: On my most recent order, the floss came wrapped in plastic. You can try to tell the folks at Amazon to stop wrapping your plastic-free items in plastic, but that doesn’t always work.

Tip:  Remove your sustainable floss from the paper packaging when traveling. This makes it super tiny for packing in your toiletry bag or toothbrush container.

For my next floss purchase, I’m going to add this sustainable travel product to my subscription at by Humankind:

Sustainable dental floss is a crucial sustainable travel product

The floss is the same deal as by Humankind’s sustainable toothpaste tablets. The biodegradable, ethically-made floss coated in vegan wax is $12 and the plastic-free container is $3. Or you can get the container for free with a $12 per-order subscription. In this case, the delivery options are every six, eight, or 10 weeks.

Sustainable, plastic-free lip balm

We go through SO MUCH chapstick, right? And we tend to lose the darn plastic containers all over the place, right? So why not purchase chapstick that comes in paper containers?

It’s ethique again for the win on the sustainable chapstick solution! Their new lip balm line contains no plastic. It’s also ethically made. Sells for $8.50 from ethique or $8.99 from Amazon .

plastic-free lip balm is a clutch sustainable travel product

Not so fun fact: More than 200 million plastic chapstick tubes are tossed into the garbage every year.

10. Your sustainable sunscreen solution

sustainable travel containers

Raw Elements Sustainable Sunscreen

  • Plastic-free in a reusable tin can
  • Cruelty-free

The Raw Elements 30-SPF for face and body is $16.99 on Amazon The 30-SPF tinted facial moisturizer is $16.49 on Amazon

This is a crucial sustainable travel product. I use the tinted sunscreen on my face every day, and I carry the larger tin in my carry-on when traveling.

Bonus Tip: Sustainable clothing

Sustainable outfit pictured.

Shirt and Pants

Both the pants and the top pictured are from one of my favorite companies. Sozy donates 10% of profits to survivors of sexual violence and another 10% to charitable and environmental initiatives. This female-founded company is climate-neutral certified, a certified B Corporation, and a member of the 1% for the Planet club.

bamboo sunglasses are a sustainable travel product to love

The sunglasses are made of bamboo from the sustainable brand WearPanda. WearPanda is a member of the 1% club, meaning at least one percent of profits are donated to environmental causes.

Sustainable Shoes made out of water bottles

Rothy’s shoes are amazing. The thread for the shoes is made from plastic water bottles. Algae-based material is used for under the insole. Outsoles are made with 35% natural and renewable materials. Insoles contain 30% plant-based oil and recycled rubber. Rothy’s plans to “close the loop” by making every pair of shoes recyclable!

A great list of things to consider. I had never heard of toothpaste tablets thats a great one. Sustainable travelling is something we are getting better with will use this guide next trip

Great ideas with collapsible products and bamboo utensils. However, I haven’t heard of toothpaste tablets before. I’d give it a go!

I hope you do it try it! Those pesky toothpaste tubes are so hard to recycle! Thanks for reading, Tom.

I can happily say that I use most of these sustainable travel products but what a great idea of the collapsible wine “glass” to use on flights. That would save so much plastic if everyone did that. I’m off to see what I can find! Thank you Jen.

I love that you are using these products, Wendy! You are a travel hero!

Such a great post! I always take along a collapsible water bottle and reusable straws when I travel, but I love the other travel containers you’ve showcased – especially the collapsible ones to save space. Loved your DIY lotion bars video too! No packaging waste, no spills, and customizing the scent all sound great to me 🙂

Yay! I’m so glad you carry your collapsible water bottles and reusable straws, Carrie Ann. And I’m really pleased that my post could help in a small way as you continue your sustainable journey!

One should really love wine to pack wine cups on the trip! :)) Though I easily see myself travelling with collapsible coffee cup!

Well, yes. The wine/beer cup may not be for everyone! But then you can always use your collapsible coffee cup for wine or beer if you have only the occasional beverage, right? Thanks for reading, Elena!

I can see why these are your top 10 sustainable travel products. Collapsible and bendable cups, bowls and water bottles are brilliant ideas especially!

I love anything bendable and collapsible! 😂

I love those wine cups! They’re a great idea to travel with. Sustainable travel products are my favourite thing to purchase.

Same! I’m working on a big old gift guide for sustainable travel products for black (green!) Friday!

I’d have to try the solid shampoo bars. That’s new to me. Also, the dental tabs. Do they work well?

I love dental tabs. They work quite well (once you get used to crunching them and making a paste), and they are a really easy way to make a big difference for the environment since most toothpaste tubes go straight into the landfill. Thanks for reading, Jolayne!

Hi Jen! What a great article on how we can be more sustainable when we travel. People often think it can be hard to be sustainable while traveling, but you’ve proved that it just takes some conscious effort and having the right tools! I’m about to go add some of these to my travel shopping list…

Yay! I’m so glad this list could help you on your sustainable journey, Alaina! Thank you for reading!

i have been trying to travel more sustainably but it can be so difficult! this is super helpful though, i love the idea of bamboo everything.

Oh, I’m so glad this list might help you on your sustainable journey! If you like bamboo, swap your next toothbrush for bamboo, too!

What a great list of sustainable travel products, Jen. I love all the foldable glasses and containers that you listed here. You’ve given me some good ideas.

I’m so glad that this post might help you, Becky. Thank you for reading!

Great list Jen! I use the same dental floss. Bamboo cutlery, straws and reusable cups are my travel staples.

I love this! Thank you, Kasia!

What a great list! I think menstrual cups are an additional sustainable must for the female traveler!

I completely agree! Thank you, Carina!

Very interesting to learn about all the sustainable toiletries Jen. Very new concept for me. Will be checking them out 🙂

Whether you’re at home or heading off on a sustainable travel adventure, these eco-friendly toiletries will help you green your daily routine.

When it comes to bathroom essentials, conventional products can have a significant impact on the planet. We’re talking toxic chemicals, plastic packaging, and single-use items like toothbrushes and razors.

Enter: biodegradable and zero waste toiletries that help you scrub up sustainably without mucking up the planet in the process.

Whether you’re transitioning to a zero waste bathroom or looking for some sustainable suitcase swaps in the form of eco-friendly travel toiletries, our list has you covered.

Grab your bamboo toothbrush and shampoo bars, and get ready for a sustainable shower. Or head down to the bottom to find out how we chose them.

Our Curated List Of The Best Eco-Friendly Toiletries For Hotels, Home, & Beyond

1. body & face wash.

Eco-Friendly Toiletries by Ethique

Ethique’s Eco-Friendly Toiletries

Price Range | $6–$17 | Shop Ethique

Let’s start with the basics—what to clean your face and body with.

For both, we can turn to Ethique, one of our favorite zero waste skincare brands with its range of solid bars for sustainable scrubbing.

The Bliss Bar™ Gentle Solid Face Cleanser removes grime and make-up without any drying effects. Made with wholesome natural ingredients like creamed coconut and kaolin clay, the fragrance-free bar will suit even the most sensitive skin.

For body wash, you’ll find both soap-based bars and soap-free cream bars in various scents and unscented versions.

Freshen up with the Lime & Lemongrass Solid Cream Body Cleanser . The creamy, pH-balanced bar is gentle on dry skin and has a refreshing zingy scent.

Solid bars are ideal zero waste travel toiletries for popping in your sustainable suitcase and they’re TSA-friendly. Ethique’s minis are perfect for traveling lightly (or trying the bars out before buying the large version).

If you’re not a bar fan, Ethique also offers concentrated body wash. Just add water to the powder and then pour the liquid into your own container.

All of Ethique’s plastic-free toiletries are vegan, cruelty-free and palm oil free.

Their equally non-plastic packaging is home compostable, and the Certified B Corp brand plants a tree for every order.

2. Shaving Kit

Eco-Friendly Toiletries by Leaf

Leaf’s Zero Waste Shaving Kit

Price Range | $59–$196 | Shop Leaf

Investing in a plastic-free reusable razor is one of the best sustainable toiletry swaps you can make. It’s better for the planet and your pocket, and it provides a superior shave.

The Leaf Razor is Leaf’s triple-blade razor, available to purchase individually or as part of a shaving kit. Its pivoting head makes it easy to use, and the lowest blade can be removed for sensitive skin.

Get started with The Leaf Kit , containing The Leaf Razor, a stand, 50 blades, and a recycling tin.

Or go all out with the Leaf Everything Bundle with added accessories, including a case, shaving oil, soap, and a shower holder.

Leaf also offers Single Edge Razors (recommended for face shavers) and plenty of zero-waste shaving accessories to make sustainable shaving a breeze.

This year alone, Leaf is helping to keep 8 million single-use plastic razors out of landfill. They’re carbon neutral certified, offer a blade recycling program , and all packaging is plastic-free.

3. Shampoo & Conditioner

Eco-Friendly Toiletries by BRIXY

BRIXY’s Shampoo & Conditioner Bars

Price Range | $14–$25 | Shop BRIXY

Where can you turn for plastic-free ‘poo?

BRIXY’s vegan and Leaping Bunny-certified cruelty-free and zero waste shampoo bars get our vote.

They are committed to making safe products, free from harmful chemicals, so you can lather up with peace of mind.

You won’t find any palm oil, parabens, phthalates, silicones, sulfates, synthetic scents, or colorants. Instead, each shampoo bar contains an array of wholesome, nourishing ingredients, including coconut oil, argan oil, and provitamin B.

Choose between three scents: Citrus, Coconut Vanilla, and Mint Eucalyptus, that are suitable for all hair types. Each shampoo bar comes packaged in a compostable, FSC-certified cardboard box.

BRIXY’s conditioner bars are made with cacao butter and coconut oil to promote sustainably soft, shiny hair and are available in the same scents. You can save money by purchasing both together as a Hair Care Duo .

BRIXY gives back to several organizations, including Environmental Working Group, (EWG), Breast Cancer Fund, Elephant Sanctuary, and Save The Whales. They’ve also created their own environmental non-profit, ECOEVO , to which they donate 1% of profits.

4. Deodorant

Eco-Friendly Toiletries by Meow Meow Tweet

Meow Meow Tweet’s Eco-Friendly Toiletries

Price Range | $14 | Shop Meow Meow Tweet

Looking for sustainable toiletries that don’t stink?

No sweat!

Meow Meow Tweet’s deodorant sticks tick all of our sustainability boxes. They’re plastic-free, palm oil-free, cruelty free, vegan, and made with natural, non-toxic ingredients like coconut oil, cocoa butter, and shea butter.

Some contain baking soda, but there are plenty of baking soda-free options for those with sensitive pits who need to avoid it.

Scents are courtesy of essential oils. Choose between Lavender Bergamot and Eucalyptus Lemon (our favorite) for the deodorant sticks with baking soda. The baking soda-free sticks come in Cedar Spruce, Grapefruit, and Rose Geranium.

MMT also offers a Deodorant Cream made from natural ingredients like arrowroot powder and coconut oil. It’s available in five scents (three are baking soda-free) and an unscented version. Originally packaged in reusable glass jars, they are transitioning over to metal.

The fully vegan Certified B Corp handmakes its products in small batches using ingredients that are mostly certified organic. Some, including the cocoa butter, shea butter, and coconut oil, are Fair Trade certified.

5. Makeup Kit

7. Sunscreen

Eco-Friendly Toiletries by ATTITUDE

ATTITUDE’s Zero Waste Sunscreen

Price Range | $3–$24 | Shop ATTITUDE

We all know that sunscreen is important for our skin health, but most standard sunscreen has a dirty secret. They’re damaging coral reefs with their ingredient lists – specifically, oxybenzone, butylparaben, octinoxate, and 4-methylbenzylidene camphor.

Luckily, you don’t have to forgo your suncream for the sake of the coral with reef-safe products like those from Canadian brand ATTITUDE .

They’re also protecting animals with their PETA cruelty-free certification, and all of their sunscreens are vegan and EWG VERIFIED™.

While not all of their eco toiletries are plastic-free, they offer several mineral sunscreens packaged in FSC-certified, biodegradable cardboard tubes.

These include a Tinted Mineral Sunscreen Face Stick , a Baby & Kids Mineral Sunscreen Stick , and sunscreens specially formulated for sensitive skin. All are SPF 30 and contain nourishing natural ingredients like coconut oil and shea butter. Sun protection is thanks to non-nano zinc oxide.

For the after (sun) party, their Mint & Cucumber After-sun Stick helps soothe skin with calming calendula, chamomile, and cucumber extracts.

A tree is planted for every order via Eden Reforestation and One Tree Planted.

8. Toothbrush

Eco-Friendly Toiletries by Sustainable Tomorrow and SuperBee

Sustainable Tomorrow & SuperBee’s Toothbrushes

Price Range | $17–$100 | Shop Sustainable Tomorrow or Shop SuperBee

With its multiple components and batteries, an electric toothbrush comes second to a manual one in terms of sustainability.

If you do need one, however, we’d recommend Sustainable Tomorrow’s Zen Bamboo Electric Toothbrush .

It comes with a year’s supply of biodegradable toothbrush heads made from bamboo and castor bean oil bristles. You can throw them in your compost, where they’ll take around six months to break down.

The battery lasts up to a month between charges, and the brush features five cleaning modes, three speeds, and a two-minute timer.

For a different kind of buzz, SuperBee is one of our favorite zero waste companies for plastic-free swaps, like beeswax wraps, reusable paper towels, reusable facial rounds, and bamboo toothbrushes.

They offer a pack of five biodegradable bamboo toothbrushes. The colorful handles (perfect for families) are 100% compostable, but not the bristles, which will need to be removed before composting.

Superbee also offers an Oral Care Travel Kit containing a bamboo toothbrush, toothbrush tabs, biodegradable dental floss, and a beeswax bag so you can always have biodegradable hotel toiletries on hand when traveling.

9. Toothpaste Tablets

Eco-Friendly Toiletries by Huppy

Huppy’s Toothpaste Tablets

Price Range | $10–$84 | Shop Huppy

Now that you’ve sorted your toothbrush, it’s time to up your eco-friendly toiletries game with toothpaste tablets.

Huppy keeps our pearly whites happy with its plastic-free, cruelty-free, vegan, and non-GMO tablets.

They’re also fluoride-free and instead contain N-HA (nano-hydroxyapatite) to help prevent decay alongside natural ingredients like coconut oil, peppermint oil, tea tree oil, and aloe vera.

However, don’t think no nasties means no foam. Of all the natural toothpastes we’ve tried, we’re so impressed with how foamy these unassuming little tablets get.

All flavors—Peppermint, Watermelon Strawberry, and Charcoal Mint—come with a refillable and recyclable metal tin, and refills come in compostable pouches. Purchase them as a one-off or save 25% by signing up for a subscription.

With responsibly sourced ingredients, sustainable packaging, and a 2% revenue giving model, Huppy gives us plenty to smile about.

Eco-Friendly Toiletries by Georganics

Georganics’ Zero Waste Toiletries UK

Price Range | £5–£7 | Shop Georganics

Toothbrush check. Toothpaste check. What about the floss?

Conventional floss is made from nylon or Teflon, and up until recently, the natural alternative was made of silk (and therefore not vegan).

Fortunately, Georganics offers dental floss that is both zero waste and vegan. It’s made from compostable corn-based PLA that’s coated with vegetable wax and peppermint, orange, or spearmint essential oil, depending on the flavor.

The Charcoal version combines charcoal fibers with the PLA and uses antibacterial peppermint oil. All flavors come packaged in a refillable glass dispenser with a metal lid. The outer packaging is a compostable cardboard box.

Refills come packaged in a NatureFlex compostable bag and outer cardboard box.

As well as helping clean your pearly whites, they are also helping clean up the environment with their Zero To Landfill scheme, which allows customers to send back used toothbrush heads for recycling.

Our Considerations For Choosing These Sustainable Toiletries

So, how did we find the best eco-friendly toiletries?

We used our sustainability criteria as follows.

Certifications:

B Corporation (B Corp), Carbon Neutral , EWG VERIFIED™ , Fair Trade Certified , People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA), Cruelty Free International (Leaping Bunny or Choose Cruelty Free), Vegan Society , Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO)

Ingredients:

We looked for natural toiletries made from non-toxic, clean, and safe ingredients. Many of the brands on this list prioritize organic ingredients and are committed to responsible sourcing. If palm oil is used, it needs to be sustainably and ethically sourced (e.g., RSPO-certified).

Values:

The best eco-friendly toiletries are vegan, cruelty-free, and made by brands that put people and the planet first.

Sustainable packaging means saying goodbye to plastic bottles and opting instead for non-plastic packaging that is refillable, re-usable, compostable, and/or recyclable.

The most sustainable packaging is no packaging, and that’s why shampoo and conditioner bars are some of the best plastic free toiletries . Pop them in reusable tins and you have eco-friendly travel containers that are also TSA-friendly.

Ethical Sourcing:

Full traceability is an important first step for responsible sourcing. We looked for brands that care about how ingredients are grown/harvested and that work within fair trade guidelines.

Many of the sustainable toiletries on our list contain ingredients like coconut oil, cocoa butter, and shea butter, which should ideally have a Fair Trade certification.

The most planet-friendly products are made by brands that take steps to reduce their carbon footprint through small-batch production, carbon offsetting, and using renewable energy.

Paying It Forward:

Supporting big-hearted brands that give back by donating funds and products to worthy causes means we can feel extra good after taking that sustainable shower.

Closing Thoughts On Eco-Friendly Toiletries

Choosing sustainable hygiene products is a great way to reduce your ecological footprint on a daily basis and help curb the growing amount of plastic waste.

The brands on our list help to say goodbye to plastic bottles and toxic chemicals and hello to natural ingredients and plastic-free packaging.

Plus, a waterless zero waste toiletries recipe (like solid shampoo) make for some of the best eco-friendly travel products and eco-friendly hotel toiletries alternatives, helping you thread a little lighter wherever your next adventure takes you—not to mention make your trip through TSA with a carry-on simpler.

Best Travel Size Toiletries

sustainable travel containers

In packing for any trip, there are certain things you can cut back on and leave at home, however devastating it may seem. And while I’m fine cutting back and leaving some things at home, obviously not everything can stay behind. So I’ve been focusing more on finding the best travel containers that are refillable – generic and brand specific.

Here are my favorite things that come in mini refillable containers, as well as a few containers for filling the rest and a few sustainable alternatives that save space! I’m rather big on using the same items and brands of things I use at home on the go, but I understand that has its limitations.

Choosing smaller, refillable containers is just one of my easy sustainable travel tips !

Sustainable Refillable Travel Containers-2

Best Travel Containers

There are so many travel bottles out there, but after too many ‘explosions’ of my shampoo I’m always leery of those “leak-proof” claims.

Hilariously enough, my cowboy boots were assaulted by some explosive shampoo on one return trip. I was initially devastated but now I love that it’s turned into a worn look. And I have a fun story to share when I wear them.

Anyway, since you can’t always count on the trendy distressed look to save you from an explosion gone wrong and because we (i.e. me) are trying to cut back on size and weight of luggage, let’s talk refillable travel containers!

When it comes to refillable travel bottles, I prefer silicone ones – not the hard-sided ones because I find them easier to use and clean.

My most trusted brand is GoToob by Humangear. We got ours from this brand about 10 years ago and still use them.

You can get the 3-pack of the 3.4oz. bottles on Amazon , Target , and from The Container Store . There are also 1.7oz containers .

The packs of 3 usually include three different colors (though you can get all clear and I’ve seen all black). I love these GoToobs for 2 reasons. Well, actually 3!

The FIRST is that they have never, ever exploded or leaked on me. I always put my shampoo and conditioner in them and for at least 10 years, I’ve never had a problem.

SECOND, there is an identifier on the cap with sham, cond, sun, lotion, and soap in addition to a blank space. Just twist it to the right product. You’ll never accidentally put sunscreen in your hair again!

THIRD, the bottles are squishy, so it’s far easier to get all the product out. This is crucial when you’re on the last days of a long trip. So many travel size bottles are hard-sided so you end up pulling a muscle trying to force it down to the opening!

The squishy factor (clearly a technical term!), is also great because that means the containers will be able to bend more and take up less space as you use more product!

The same brand also sells GoTubbs which are little container perfect for pills, jewelry, and anything little you like. They aren’t leak proof, but it’s a good way to store some essentials!

Target sells a similar travel containers for kids with adorable penguins ! I’d use these too as an adult and they even have the identifiers.

I recently stumbled on these refillable travel containers that have airless pumps and are made of recycled plastic. I obviously can’t vouch for them, but I love the idea for hair care and beauty products!

Sustainable Refillable Travel Containers-Hair Products

Refillable Haircare for Travel

I have a long list of reasons I love Innersense hair care , but on that list is that they have refillable, miniature bottles of most of their line – not just shampoo and conditioner. And if that weren’t enough, these 2 oz. hair care bottles are also made of recycled plastic !

For this upcoming trip, I purchased (because I use them the most) the following hair styling refillable containers.

  • Hair Love Prep Spray – a heat protectant spray
  • Quiet Calm Curl Control
  • I Create Finish (hair spray)

Use discount code LUCI15 for 15% off your first Innersense purchase

Now, while Innersense offers travel sizes of the shampoo and conditioner I use, and I could even just use one of the refillable travel containers above, I’m actually planning to take small shampoo and conditioner bars !

refillable skincare containers

Refillable Skincare for Travel

Many companies are starting to come out with miniature sizes of their product,s but the key is finding ones that are refillable (and easily refillable at that). Anything with a screw-on lid is great as it lets you refill easily. Further if the full size option can dispense easily without changing the formula or consistency, you’re golden!

My current skincare options are almost completely refillable, which more than a little freakin’ fabulous!

Check out my Beautycounter product review here and you’ll see just how much I love my Beautycounter skincare regimen. They often sell a carryon set of their countertime regimen . Each of the items comes in a completely refillable container (with Beautycounter or any other product). The collection includes a cleansing oil, toning water, serum, face cream, and an overnight cream containers – totally fine for any brand.

I also recently tried the Activist skincare , a completely refillable, clean skincare line. Their trial kit comes with refillable, travel sizes, and I’m excited to take the serum and face oil in these small containers with droppers. I’ve traveled with them, and they don’t leak, so I’m quite happy.

If you’re thinking of traveling without your without your skincare regimen, I’d encourage you to think again. Read these benefits of facial serum and why it’s always a must-have.

Use code LUCISMORSELS for 15% off your Activist order. Check out their trial kit for travel sizes!

A few other favorite products of mine that come in small, refillable containers:

And check out this post on refill pouches and what personal care brands offer refill pouches!

Refillable Travel Perfume Bottle

I actually don’t wear perfume, but I know a lot of people do and have a need for this! And since a big glass bottle is heavy and breakable, not to mention the weight of all the liquid – this is a great place to cut back.

You want to look for a mini spray bottle or atomizer. I’ve found quite a few selection on Etsy from glass to aluminum and bamboo casings. This bamboo perfume spray bottle is attractive because it isn’t breakable and has a sleek cover for the spray button!

daybird skincare reviews

Travel Size Makeup?

Some makeup brands offer mini sizes of their products, but they usually aren’t refillable at all. I do support the downsizing of your suitcase, but at the cost of even more beauty empties to make sure you recycle properly …I don’t think it’s worth it.

So rather than makeup minis, I’d use refillable containers as much as you can (think foundation in a small tub or container) and think about just downsizing the amount of makeup you’ll be taking on a trip. See my complete clean makeup routine here .

For my upcoming trip to Scotland , I’m taking the following items:

  • Tinted SPF to moisturizer (see my daybird skincare review w. discount)
  • Cream Blush Stick
  • Gel Eyeliner
  • Brow Pencil
  • Lash Lengthening Mascara
  • highlighting balm

Additionally, I have luck saving the items from the “gifts with purchase” for my remaining travel size toiletry needs. And when you really strike out with the above options, get some sealed containers and make your own mini size.

Check out these refillable makeup products , refillable skincare products , and refillable deodorants brands !

Where to get Travel Size Beauty Products

For those things you can’t live without, check out Sephora’s extensive minis section . IT’S HUGE!!! They have just about everything and a long list of clean beauty brands via Sephora online and in store .

The options for travel size toiletries, cosmetics, and shampoo bottles are actually quite numerous. You just might need to do a little research. Remember that you can only take up to 3.4 oz. of any one item through TSA. Most makeup items are actually much smaller. And remember you can always use the GoToobs and GoTubbs to downsize for your trip!

Looking to downsize more? Check out what I take in my travel wallet and tips for how to avoid overpacking .

Sustainable travel means being mindful of our environmental impact while experiencing new cultures and destinations. This guide delves into the best practices for eco-friendly travel, ensuring your adventures contribute positively to the planet and local communities.

Choose Eco-Friendly Transportation

When planning your travels, opting for transportation methods that minimize carbon emissions is crucial in sustainable travel. For shorter distances, trains and buses are significantly more eco-friendly than airplanes, emitting far less carbon per passenger. This choice reduces your environmental impact and often provides a more scenic and immersive travel experience.

If air travel is unavoidable, particularly for longer distances, look for airlines that offer carbon offset programs. By making these conscious choices in your mode of transportation, you play a direct role in reducing the carbon footprint of your travels, contributing to the broader effort of environmental conservation.

Insider’s Tip: Rent electric or hybrid vehicles for road trips to reduce your carbon footprint.

<p><span>Engaging with local economies is a key aspect of sustainable travel and a practice that directly benefits the communities you visit. Support Local Businesses

Engaging with local economies is a key aspect of sustainable travel and a practice that directly benefits the communities you visit. By choosing locally-owned accommodations, dining at local restaurants, and selecting local tour operators, you’re not only immersing yourself in the authentic culture of the destination but also ensuring that your spending contributes directly to the local economy. This approach supports small businesses and helps to distribute tourism dollars more evenly, fostering community development.

Moreover, local establishments often have a smaller carbon footprint than larger international chains. They’re more likely to use local resources, employ residents, and preserve traditional practices. By making these choices, you help sustain the local culture and environment while reducing the overall emissions associated with your travel. This way, your journey becomes more meaningful, both for you and for the people whose home you’re visiting.

Insider’s Tip: Seek out accommodations that are known for their sustainable practices and community involvement.

<p><span>Packing light is an effective way to contribute to more sustainable travel. By reducing the weight of your luggage, you indirectly help lower the fuel consumption of flights, decreasing the carbon emissions associated with air travel.
