THE BOOK OF MORMON features book, music and lyrics by Trey Parker , Robert Lopez and Matt Stone . The Broadway production is directed by Parker and Casey Nicholaw , and choreographed by Nicholaw. The tour is directed and choreographed by Jennifer Werner based on the original Broadway direction and choreography. Set design is by three-time Tony Award winner Scott Pask , costume design is by Tony Award winner Ann Roth , lighting design is by five-time Tony Award winner Brian MacDevitt , sound design is by two-time Tony Award winner Brian Ronan , and hair design is by Josh Marquette . Since opening on March 24, 2011,  THE BOOK OF MORMON  has become one of the most successful shows in Broadway history, breaking the Eugene O’Neill Theatre house record more than 50 times. In addition to nine Tony Awards including Best Musical and the Grammy for Best Musical Theatre Album,  THE BOOK OF MORMON  won five Drama Desk Awards including Best Musical, the NY Drama Critics Circle Award for Best Musical, the Drama League Award for Best Musical and four Outer Critics Circle Awards including Best Musical.

The West End production opened in February 2013, winning four Olivier Awards including Best New Musical, and breaking the record for the highest single day of sales in West End history. The first-ever UK and European tour launched in Manchester in June 2019, winning ‘Best Theatre Show’ at the Manchester Evening News City Life Awards before touring throughout the UK and Europe.

“The Book of Mormon” still shocks and surprises 13 years after its trashily triumphant Broadway debut.

The unabashed and uncompromising satire of Broadway musicals, coming to the Waterbury Palace Theater April 26-28, has become one of the genre’s major mainstream successes.

The show was written by “South Park” creators Matt Stone and Trey Parker with Robert Lopez of “Avenue Q” and “Frozen” fame. Still running in New York, “The Book of Mormon” is currently the 12th longest-running Broadway show of all time and one of the most profitable.

These days, a “Book of Mormon”  tour is greeted by audience members who come in costume, hold up signs and know every line by heart. That throng of devout fans has to co-exist with theatergoers who may be seeing this outrageous show for the first time. “The Book of Mormon” continues to do impressive business at theaters that have already booked it previously.

Neither Thomas Ed Purvis, who plays Mutumbo and is also the tour’s co-dance captain, nor Lamont J. Whitaker, who plays Mafala Hatimbi (the father of the show’s heroine Nabalungi) are old enough to have experienced that wave of amazement that met “The Book of Mormon” when this bad-taste-based musical spectacle exploded upon Broadway in 2011.

“I knew of the show, but it wasn’t one of the ones they taught at school,” said Purvis who attended the Boston Conservatory, a breeding ground for musical theater performers. “I first saw it when it reopened on Broadway after COVID.”

“I didn’t see it until we started rehearsals for this tour in 2022,” said Whitaker. “When I was in college, people would sing ‘I Believe,’ so I always knew what kind of show it was.”

That song, in which the show’s hero, a Mormon missionary named Elder Price, reaffirms his faith in his religion, includes lyrics like “I believe! That God lives on a planet called Kolob! I believe! That Jesus has his own planet as well. And I believe that the Garden of Eden was in Jackson County, Missouri. If you believe, the Lord will reveal it. And you’ll know it’s all true — You’ll just feel it. You’ll be a Mormon!!! And by gosh — Mormon just belieeeeeeeeves!!!!”

Elder Price (played on this tour by Sam McLellan) and his pesky fellow missionary Elder Cunningham (Sam Nackman) attempt to interest Ugandan natives in the Mormon faith and become involved in village disputes with a local warlord.

Purvis is a Norwalk resident who previously sang and danced on tour in Connecticut in the long-running tour of “Rent”. “The Book of Mormon” has visited the same big theaters that “Rent” did, namely The Bushnell, the Shubert and the Waterbury Palace, some of them more than once.

”I dreamed of going to some of these theaters around the country,” Purvis said. He looks forward to playing the Waterbury Palace, partly because family members from Connecticut will be coming to see it. His grandmother has seen the musical 10 times.

Whitaker’s grandmother has been an influence as well. “She was a chief in Ghana. She got crowned. I pay homage to her in the way I carry my character.”

Whitaker’s mother, stepfather and brothers have all seen him play Mafala Hatimbi. He sees some cultural relevance in the show. “There’s been a lot going on in Uganda recently. We’re putting certain things out there.”

When he began with the tour, Purvis was a “swing” (the company member who understudies multiple small roles in the show) and assistant dance captain. His current job as co-dance captain requires him to “set up the show and maintain it on the road.”

Whitaker has performed the role of Mafala Hatimbi around 500 times at this point. He said the character is “very special. He’s a single father who wants his daughter to have the life he’s never had. He really changes by the end of the story.”

That is a sweet, sentimental way of describing a show that is also a riotous, foul-mouthed and violent tale of culture clashes and religious dogma.

“You do try to find the humanity,” Whitaker said.

As for the raucous comedy, “Someone is still feeling that impact for the first time,” Purvis said. “We have to keep it fresh.”

Whitaker notes that the show has been around so long, and this particular tour has lasted so long, that it’s bringing “The Book of Mormon” to areas that haven’t experienced it before.

“We’re reaching cities that have never seen it, that would never get this type of musical. We’re pushing the barriers,” he said.

“The Book of Mormon” runs April 26-28 at the Palace Theater, 100 East Main St., Waterbury. Performances are Friday at 8 p.m., Saturday at 2 and 8 p.m. and Sunday at 1 and 6:30 p.m. $44-$148. palacetheaterct.org/shows-and-events/main-stage/book-mormon .

The musical tells the story of two Salt Lake City Mormons sent as missionaries to Uganda, hoping for a few baptisms and a couple of conversions. Instead, they are welcomed by some very harsh realities and a particularly unpleasant warlord.

A new national tour of  The Book of Mormon , the winner of nine Tony Awards ® including Best Musical, will launch this September and visit over 50 cities across the U.S., including 29 where the show has never played before.

THE BOOK OF MORMON to return to Sydney in 2025

Australia, the Mormons are back! The Tony®, Olivier® and Grammy®award-winning production THE BOOK OF MORMON will return to Sydney from July 2025.

Winner of nine Tony Awards ® including Best Musical and the Grammy ® for Best Musical Theatre album , The Book of Mormon follows a pair of mismatched Mormon boys sent on a mission to a place that’s about as far from Salt Lake City as you can get. It will premiere at the Capitol Theatre in Sydney from July 2025.

THE BOOK OF MORMON made its world premiere in March 2011 at Broadway’s Eugene O’Neil Theatre. The London production opened in February 2013 at the Prince of Wales Theatre, winning four Olivier Awards ®, including Best New Musical .

The show has set house records at 27 theatres across the US and broke theatre sales records at New York’s Eugene O’Neill Theater more than 50 times. The London production broke box office records for the highest single day of sales in West End history.

The Australian premiere season in Melbourne in 2015 broke the record for the highest selling on-sale period of any production in Melbourne’s Princess Theatre’s 159-year history and also won the Helpmann Award for Best Musical.

THE BOOK OF MORMON  features book, music and lyrics by  Trey Parker , Robert Lopez and  Matt Stone . The production is co-directed by Casey Nicholaw and Parker and choreographed by  Nicholaw .

Trey Parker and Matt Stone are the creators of the Emmy and Peabody Award-winning television show, South Park , now in its 27th season, and the feature films  South Park: Bigger, Longer & Uncut  and  Team America: World Police .

Robert Lopez co-created the Broadway musical  Avenue Q  and co-wrote the songs for Disney’s  Frozen  and  Coco . He is the first person ever to achieve a double ‘EGOT,’ winning at least two each of the four major entertainment awards: Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony Awards.

THE BOOK OF MORMON  is co-directed and choreographed by the Tony, Olivier, Drama Desk and Outer Critics Circle Award-winning Casey Nicholaw. His Broadway and West End credits include Disney’s  Aladdin ,  Dreamgirls ,  Mean Girls , Monty Python’s  Spamalot ,  The Prom  and  The Drowsy Chaperone .

Set design for THE BOOK OF MORMON is by three-time Tony Award winner  Scott Pask , costume design is by two-time Tony Award winner  Ann Roth , lighting design is by five-time Tony Award winner  Brian MacDevitt  and sound design is by two-time Tony Award winner  Brian Ronan . Orchestrations are by Tony Award winner  Larry Hochman and two-time Tony Award winner  Stephen Oremus . Music direction and vocal arrangements are by Oremus.

'The Book Of Mormon' Is Returning To Australia In 2025

Opening in Sydney in July 2025, the production will be housed in Capitol Theatre.

The Tony, Olivier, and Grammy award-winning production, The Book Of Mormon , is gracing our shores once again to provide immaculate storytelling, gorgeous singing, and comedy sure to bring belly laughs. 

Created by the minds behind South Park , the musical follows two Mormon missionaries as they try to preach to the inhabitants of a remote Ugandan village - and chaos ensues. 

The show has won numerous awards, including nine Tony awards, four Olivier Awards, and a Grammy for the Best Musical Theatre album. The accolades don’t stop there. During their 2015 premier season in Australia, they broke the record for the highest-selling on-sale period of any production in Melbourne’s Princess Theatre’s 159-year history.

The team is just as impressive. The Book Of Mormon is co-directed and choreographed by the Tony, Olivier, Drama Desk and Outer Critics Circle Award-winning Casey Nicholaw , set design is by three-time Tony Award winner Scott Pask , costume design is by two-time Tony Award winner Ann Roth , lighting design is by five-time Tony Award winner Brian MacDevitt, and sound design is by two-time Tony Award winner Brian Ronan .

Speaking with The Music ahead of The Book Of Mormon ’s Perth run in 2019, star Nyk Bielak (Elder Cunningham) said: “It’s the show for people who don’t like musicals and it’s also a perfect musical at the same time... It’s a love letter to musical theatre, and also gives it the finger; it’s telling Broadway to go fuck itself, but you can tell that [Stone and Parker] love musicals.”

The Book of Mormon musical to return to Australia in 2025

Hello! It has been confirmed that Tony and Grammy Award-winning production, The Book of Mormon, will return to Australia in 2025.

After first premiering in 2011 on Broadway at the Eugene O’Neil Theatre (and still running there today) the musical first premiered in Melbourne in 2015, where it broke the record for the highest selling on-sale period of any production in Melbourne’s Princess Theatre’s 159-year history and also won the Helpmann Award for Best Musical.

It then went on to stints in Sydney, Brisbane, Adelaide and Perth.

However it has been announced that The Book of Mormon will now return to Sydney’s Capitol Theatre from July next year.

Created by South Park masterminds, Trey Parker and Matt Stone, and Avenue Q co-creator Robert Lopez, The Book of Mormon stunned Broadway fans when it made its debut in 2011 and went on to win nine Tony Awards, including Best Musical, and the Grammy for Best Musical Theatre album.

The waitlist for tickets to the Sydney production is open now.

The news comes just months after it was announced that another Tony-award winning production, MJ The Musical – which centres around the making of the late pop star’s 1992 Dangerous world tour and looks back on his controversial childhood and life – will premiere at Sydney’s Lyric Theatre in February 2025.
