What is Open Studios Art Tour?

The San Luis Obispo County Open Studios Art Tour, a program of SLO County Arts Council, takes place over two weekends in October each year. Free to the public, fine artists and crafters open their studios to showcase their art and share their processes. Visitors create their own self-guided tour using the printed and downloadable catalog.

The event takes place on October 8-9, and 15-16 from 10 AM to 5 PM. Studios must be open 10 AM – 5 PM on both days of the weekend if participating in one or both weekends.

What does SLO County Arts provide for OSAT participants?

• Preparation support for marketing and merchandising your work
• Enters you into a juried selection for the Preview Show
• Provides you with discounted admission to the Fundraiser / Kick-Off Event
• Adds you to both the printed *and* online printable catalog

• Open Studios Art Tour advertising and publicity in local and regional publications/media

ELIGIBILITY

Residency: All applicants and participating artists must be permanent residents of San Luis Obispo County with proof of residency provided if requested.

Studio Eligibility: An Open Studios site is defined as the artist’s regular workspace and must retain the atmosphere of art-making, with materials, equipment, works-in-progress, and processes visible (does not apply if you’re being hosted). Retail galleries are not eligible for this event.

Other Eligibility Requirements: We welcome all artists from emerging to professionals. Your body of work should be well developed and demonstrate your competency, proficiency, and skill in your craft.

In order to apply, you will need:

• Complete both the payment ($220 total) *and* the OSAT 2022 Application Form

The Application Form includes the following:

• At least 1 high-resolution, recent, original piece for the application; a minimum of 10 original pieces on hand for the opening day. The photo of your artwork is what brings people to you. It works to your advantage to have similar work available for purchase.

• High-quality photograph of your work (hiring a professional photographer is optimal). Please save as either JPG or JPEG in high quality, at least 300ppi, cropped to a SQUARE format of at least 1500px x 1500px. Please make sure the photo submitted is a recent, original piece and does not include any shadows. Choose pieces that look good in a square format when cropped. • A short description of you and/or your artwork. The description is limited to 70 characters, including letters, spaces, and punctuation. This will be shown under your artwork image in the printed Artist Guide. If an artist fails to comply with 70 characters, a description will not be included.

• CA State Seller’s Permit numbers are required. Temporary permits are available for the month of October and are available closer to the event date. If you don’t have a permit, visit CA BoE Permit and License page: https://www.cdtfa.ca.gov/services/permits-licenses.htm

Applications must be submitted by the deadline to ensure participants receive catalogs and materials on time. The final deadline is June 30th, 2022. Applications will not be accepted after this date.

SLO County artists open studios to public, share works and creative process

The San Luis Obispo County Open Studios Art Tour is a yearly program hosted by the SLO County Arts Council every October. Artists welcome the public to their studios for two weekends in a row to showcase their art and share their creative process.

More than 120 artists countywide are opening their studios to the public this year after the Arts Council held a virtual program in 2020.

30 artists are participating this year for the first time.

Rhys Manning is one of those first-time artists. She's a 14-year-old competitive swimmer, kitten fosterer, painter and jewelry maker. She said she is known for painting very colorful, happy pieces.

Manning says her most popular art is her pet portraits.

“All these — I have lots of examples — they are all someone’s dog. They send me pictures and then I paint them, either on canvas or rock, and they’re all custom,” Manning said.

Many of her pet portraits are memorial artworks for pets who have passed.

Manning said she’s been making art with her mom for years but started investing more time in her craft during the pandemic.

She and her family decided she needed a dedicated space to create. So Manning started taking commissions and selling pieces to raise money to build her own studio in her backyard in Los Osos. She calls it her ‘she-shed.’

“Everything on the interior is all put together from me and my dad. So the flooring is all put in from us, all the walls, everything you see in here,” Manning said. “And it’s all 100 percent funded from my artwork.”

It’s got big windows, craft storage, a desk for work space and a comfy couch on the first level. Up above, there’s a loft with a bed for slumber parties. And outside the entrance doors — a view of the ocean.

Barry Lundgren is another artist participating in the Open Studios Tour. He said he’s been doing the tour for at least 14 years.

Lundgren’s art is in a number of galleries in San Luis Obispo County. He’s been a woodturner for nearly three decades and lives in Atascadero.

“I went to art school as a photographer and I really didn’t like the generic metal frames you put your pictures in,” Lundgren said. “So, I started making them out of wood.”

Over time, he said that turned into furniture making. One day he was at a trade show buying some equipment and he sat in on a demonstration by a man turning a natural edge wood bowl.

“He had it done in an hour and a lightbulb went off,” Lundgren said. “I bought a lathe and started turning, pretty much self-taught. And it’s just way more instant and for me gratifying to watch the shavings fly. And 25, 27 years later, this is what I do.”

Lundgren said people call him all the time to give him wood to work with. He said that makes his art more personal.

“Some of the woods that I have here were in friends’ firewood piles. Or I’ve got stuff from city tree guys that work on the Chippit,” Lundgren said. “There’s always a story behind every piece of wood.”

He makes artistic statement pieces and usable things like bowls and urns. He said sometimes they can take a year or even two to dry — and they can last generations.

Lundgren said his work doesn’t come without risk. He said the bigger the piece he is working with, the more beat up he gets. Sometimes he wears a helmet.

“I used to turn quite a few big pieces. Now it’s more of these smaller ones. They’re just not as hard on my shoulders,” Lundgren said. “Especially some of these natural edge burrells, this maple burrell. That’s got spikes and if that came off the lathe at a high speed, you’re just kinda done.”

Lundgren said woodturning is a labor of love. He said the risk is worth it for the art, especially when he gets to meet people who enjoy his work.

The San Luis Obispo County Open Studios Art Tour continues October 16-17. It’s free to the public and visitors can create their own self-guided tour using a downloadable catalog of all the participating artists and their studios.

SLO County Arts Open Studios Tours 2022  

Celebrating 24 years.

The San Luis Obispo County Open Studios Art Tour, a program of SLO County Arts Council, takes place over two weekends in October each year. Free to the public, visitors create their own self-guided tour using the catalog. This year, SLO County Arts Council is thrilled to offer the 24th annual Open Studios Art Tour to San Luis Obispo County and beyond. For the past twenty-four years, we’ve proudly supported artists in the sharing of their talents and expertise with our extended community. Artists from a wide variety of disciplines will open their working studios to showcase their creative processes and creations. Across San Luis Obispo County, we’ll visit artists of varied mediums, including glass works, woodcarving, jewelry design, sculpture, and painting.

You’re invited to experience creativity through the eyes of participating artists who reflect our beautiful beaches, cliffs, and valleys through their art. Explore the views and influences that surround their unique studios.

Visit the studios and artists that interest you the most and be sure to attend the additional events happening throughout the week!

The SLO County Arts Council is happy to announce the 25th Annual Open Studios Art Tour in 2023, with over 100 artists participating! This event will take place on October 14-15 and October 21-22 throughout San Luis Obispo County.

Join us for the “Kickoff Celebration” of the Tour, taking place on the Friday before the Tour begins, on October 13th from 6-9 PM at The Bunker SLO. We will have live DJ set to enjoy from Peaking Lights; food from Baguette About It and Big Wave Sushi Bowls available for purchase; and opportunities to network and mingle with local artists and art patrons. The works of several artists participating in the Tour will be on display as a part of this year’s Preview Show.

First Weekend – October 14-15, 2023

Second Weekend – October 21-22, 2023

A Kick-Off Celebration will be held on Friday, October 13th from 6 to 9 PM. The celebration will also inaugurate the SLO County Arts Council’s new office location at The Bunker (810 Orcutt Road, SLO). There will be food from Big Wave Sushi and Baguette About for sale along with beer/wine. DJ Peaking Lights will perform and inside there will be a gallery exhibition with artwork by local artists participating in the Open Studios Art Tour. Purchase a ticket to show your support.

NEW to the 25th Annual Open Studios Art Tour are planned routes ! If you’re new to navigating the catalog or just want a themed or location-based route already made for you, check out our twenty-four different planned routes across the county. Each map will have options to view all registered 2023 OSAT artists as well as the planned routes for each region. When going on a planned route, pick up a card at your first stop and get it signed by each artist on your route to enjoy a reward at a sponsoring local business!

Throughout the tour weekends, several artists plan to host workshops, talks, and demonstrations of their work and process. Find out which artists are offering scheduled events and consider adding one into your tour plans. This is a great way to get a deeper experience at some of the studios you might be planning to visit, expect to walk away inspired!
