The best time to visit Phuket: month-by-month guide

Located on Thailand’s breathtaking Andaman Coast, Phuket is the country’s largest and most popular island. Every year, it welcomes millions of visitors from all over the world, with over 30,000 visitors per day.

Phuket is also considered an ideal honeymoon destination. With countless things to see and do, many say it is Thailand’s best island.

Whether you desire to sunbathe on one of its white-sand beaches, go scuba diving or snorkeling, or simply eat some of the delicious food, Phuket is every traveler’s dream as it has everything you need for an enjoyable trip.

With so much to offer, it is tough to decide when to visit Phuket. While it is possible to visit the island all year round, heavy rainfall sometimes restricts access to certain areas.

Similarly, strong winds occasionally make some beaches too dangerous to access. But don’t you worry, we are here to tell you about the best time to visit Phuket.

The best island tour from Phuket, perfect for all seasons, is still the James Bond island tour

Below you will find our month-by-month guide to this incredible destination which will help you plan your much-awaited trip:

Phuket lies close to the equator so average temperatures don’t vary much, but rainfall varies significantly every month, so this is the main factor to consider when planning your trip.

In terms of rainfall, January is one of the best months to visit the island, as the average expected rainfall is around 35 mm over a just a short five-day period. Also, temperatures do not exceed 32 °C, making the atmosphere dry and warm and therefore suitable for venturing out in Phuket.

January and February have similar average maximum temperatures, with expected highs of 33 °C. However, at 30 mm, the rainfall is considerably lower than the previous month, making February the driest month of the year.

With calm seas, and mostly blue skies, visitors have the opportunity to enjoy their stay without being interrupted by bad weather conditions.

The best time to visit Phuket: month-by-month guide

The average maximum temperature increases to 34 °C in March. However, spiking humidity levels mean the weather gets quite hot, which some visitors find uncomfortable and need to rely on air conditioning to survive the heat.

Although March does not see rain often, any rain comes in the form of short bursts, and the humidity is still high. The days are sunny and somewhat suffocating, so not ideal for tourists.

While April’s temperatures don’t reach more than 34 °C, it is still regarded as one of the hottest and most humid months of the year, and humidity levels continue to increase as the month goes by.

The only difference between March and April is that it rains a lot in April. The average amount of precipitation is 160 mm, which means rain showers are frequent.

But don’t worry, the rain doesn’t last very long, so it is unlikely to ruin your plans. Just remember to carry a light umbrella with you in case of heavy rainfall.

May’s average daytime temperature remains around the same as that of April, but nighttime temperatures drop to 29 °C.

The rainfall level stays at 350 mm, making the days very hot and the nights very wet and uncomfortable. As the month enters its latter half, the island is hit with the prime of the monsoon season and things seem to get stickier and damper. If you are not a big fan of mosquitoes, then possibly avoid visiting in July.

The average temperature in June stays at a high of 32 °C, with lows of around 24 °C. Like May, June also sees many days of rainfall.

What differentiates June from the previous months, however, is the fact that visitors must expect short bursts of heavy rainstorms and thunderstorms instead of light frequent showers.

Between the storms, expect nice sunny skies and cool breezes. However, if stormy rain is not your thing, visiting Phuket during June is not advisable.

July brings increasingly cool winds, making the outside atmosphere rather pleasant and much more comfortable.

Even though both the expected rainfall and the number of rainy days are higher than the previous month, the weather seems to be more bearable because of the winds.

The average maximum temperature lies around 31 °C. Popular activities for this month include swimming and scuba diving.

The average maximum temperature in August remains at around 31 °C, and the precipitation amount is the same as in July.

However, in August, rainy days are limited to ten days only, making it considerably easier for visitors to plan activities.

The rain falls in short bursts like before and is followed by cooling breezes which make both the inside and outside temperatures very pleasant and enjoyable.

The wettest month of the year brings heavy downpour, thunderstorms, and long periods of rain, stretching up to a whopping 19 days. The average temperature in September stays at 30 °C.

The rain is usually followed by intense periods of humidity, where the air moisture level peaks at approximately 90%, making it very uncomfortable to be in Phuket.

The weather seems suffocating and very difficult for the tourists to bear. Visiting the beach is also not the best idea as September’s strong winds make the waves go higher and higher, claiming a few lives each year.

The island starts to see the departure of the monsoons in October. Nevertheless, expect still to see 310 mm of rainfall in this month.

But since the rain stretches over 23 days, thunderstorms and heavy downpours are not expected. In October, you’re more likely to see light showers followed by sunny and humid conditions.

Beaches remain closed as conditions are still too dangerous; however, it is still possible to go fishing. The average maximum temperature remains at 31 °C.

Temperatures still do not reach above 31 °C in this month, but the weather is much more pleasant in terms of humidity levels and rainfall.

The monsoons are redirected and there are only cool breezes, making the overall atmosphere very pleasant.

Whatever remains of the monsoon falls over a duration of 16 days and rainfall does not exceed 190 mm. The oceans are open for tourists to sit by and relax.

The monsoon officially comes to an end in December, allowing those who are not so fond of the rain to come and relax comfortably on the island.

The humidity levels also decrease to about 70- 75%, further improving the climatic conditions, meaning less reliance on air conditioning, and more time strolling around markets and on beaches.

The average daily temperature falls as the month passes by, hitting at a low of 27 °C as December ends. Otherwise, the average is approximately 31 °C.

Conclusion – the best time to visit Phuket:

Deciding which time to go to Phuket honestly depends on what you want to do there. If you are after good beach weather, then December to March is the best time to visit as you’ll experience less rainfall and plenty of sunshine.

Expect blue skies, calm water, sunshine, and rare, yet bearable, rainfall during these months. However, for activities such as diving, visiting Phuket between November and April is recommended.

Not sure what is the best time to visit Phuket? Generally, the best time to visit Phuket is the between January and March , as these months have the driest, warmest weather.

However, these months are also within peak tourist season, which may not be the right time to visit for those who want a quieter vacation.

After spending time in Phuket during different seasons, have figured out when is the best time to visit Phuket for different types of travelers.

In this guide, we explain what each month brings, so you can make an informed decision about when to visit Thailand’s largest island.

Climate and Weather in Phuket

Phuket has a tropical climate and doesn’t vary in temperature much throughout the year. It’s also consistently humid, with an average humidity rating of 77%.

August is the most humid month at 82% humidity, whereas January is the least humid at 70% humidity.

During the monsoon season from June to September, you can also expect wind speed to increase to highs of 3 meters per second, whereas November is the least windy month with averages at 1 meter per second.

While most of Thailand has a rainy season from June until September, Phuket experiences a longer rainy season because of its coastal position. The rain is likely to begin in May and continue into October and November. In fact, September and October are the wettest months of the year in Phuket.

During the rainy season in Phuket, you can experience dark and gloomy days with lots of cloud cover.

The driest months in Phuket are January and February which receives very little rainfall throughout the months.

Phuket in Summer (June to August)

Bangla Road Patong Beach

The summer months in Phuket are from June until August, which is the wettest time of the year and is well into the rainy Monsoon Season. You can expect a lot of wet weather, strong winds, and even flooding on an almost daily basis.

Those visiting Phuket this time of year should prepare for wet weather and flooding at all times. In fact, flash flooding occurs almost every September, causing widespread devastation throughout the region.

It can also impact flights landing and leaving from Phuket International Airport.

The flooding not only disrupts tourism but also causes problems for the locals, since the rain can bring down power lines, cut off roads and make them impossible to use, and cause power outages.

It’s unsurprising then that this is the quiet season in terms of tourism, and you’ll also find that tours and hotels will close during this time of year, especially when the weather is bad.

Phuket in Fall (September to November)

Phuket Night Market

While September and October continue to see wet weather, it will start to ease off into November. It’s possible to have sunny days come late October and into November, but rain showers may happen sporadically.

From our experience, the rain showers in the Autumn season are far less intense than the summer, and usually only occur in short bursts, allowing you time to get out and enjoy the periods of dry weather. We also noticed rain storms happen more at night.

November is a popular time to visit Thailand, so you will find that from late October and early November, more hotels and tours who closed during the rainy season will open again – often at reduced rates.

That makes November a good time to visit Phuket, since it’s the shoulder season and when you can find cheaper deals after the Monsoon Season. That being said, you do still have to put up with some rainy days.

Autumn is also a good time of year to visit Phuket for the Phuket Vegetarian Festival, which happens on the 9th lunar month of the Chinese calendar.

During this time of year, you’ll find many parades, festivities, and of course, street food markets pop up in Phuket Old Town.

Phuket in Winter (December to March)

Phuket in Winter

Winter is peak tourist season in Thailand, and is so it’s one of the most popular times of year to visit Phuket. You can expect Phuket to be busy with tourists during the months of December until February.

While the weather is hot, it’s not unbearably hot, and these months have very little chance of rain.

It’s also when Chinese New Year happens, which is quite a big deal in Phuket. While Thai people don’t celebrate Chinese New Year , Phuket has a large population of Chinese immigrants and they love to celebrate this annual event.

Phuket in Spring (March to May)

visit phuket in january

Spring is not a great time to visit Phuket because it starts to get rainy again, and it’s also incredibly busy.

This is because March until May is when the Burning Season in Chiang Mai happens, causing the locals and expats to flock to Southern Thailand to escape the pollution – and you can guess where they go!

Phuket is packed with people this time of year and hotels get booked up in advance, not to mention at higher rates.

While March and April are drier months compared to the rest of the year, May brings with it the Monsoon Season.

Best Time to Visit Phuket For Festivals

If you are visiting Phuket to join in with the local festivities, then you’re going to want to visit in September or October when the annual Phuket Vegetarian Festival takes place.

It’s the most famous thing Phuket is known for besides its beaches, and is the most vibrant event of the year.

Phuket Vegetarian Festival

Some other popular festivals that take place in Phuket are Songkran, otherwise known as Thai New Year, which happens all over the country, but the water fights on Bangla Road in Patong Beach are somewhat of a legend.

Another iconic festival is the Lantern Festival, which is usually more famous in Chiang Mai, but is also celebrated all over the country. Sapan Hin Lake in Phuket Old Town, as well as any of the beaches, are a good place to see the releasing of Loy Krathongs.

There are also lantern releases on the main beaches, such as Patong Beach and Karon Beach .

Best Time To Visit Phuket TO Escape The Crowds, Thailand

Storm Clouds in Phuket

If you want to avoid the crowds, then you may want to visit Phuket in late October or November. This is when the rainy season has come to an end but it hasn’t fully opened up for the busy tourist season.

Though these are the quieter months in terms of tourism, it’s worth noting that Phuket is one of the most popular places to visit in Thailand for first timers , which is estimated to receive 14 million visitors by the end of 2023.

Needless to say, there isn’t really a quiet period in Phuket, but you will find it considerably less packed in October and November than in January and February.

Best Month to Visit Phuket, Thailand

Now you know what to expect from visiting Phuket in each season, below is a month-by-month analysis of what you can expect from the weather in Phuket!

Phuket in January

  • Average Temperature: 26°C (79°F) Lows, 30°C (85°F) Highs
  • Rainfall: 56 mm in 6 Days
  • Sunlight hours: 235 hours

January is in the peak tourist season in Phuket because it receives the best weather of the year. It remains hot throughout the days and nights, and has little chance of rain, with an average of just 6 days of rain throughout the month.

It also has cloudless skies, gracing the island with 235 hours of sunshine throughout the month. This is perfect weather for island hopping, snorkeling, swimming, or just exploring the island’s numerous outdoor attractions.

However, do be sure to wear sun protection and drink plenty of water to remain

Phuket in February

  • Rainfall: 34 mm in 4 Days
  • Sunlight hours: 220 hours

The weather in Phuket in February is much like the weather in January, and receives very little chance of rain, cloudless skies and warm temperatures.

February is still peak tourist season, which sees thousands of visitors across the island throughout the month.

If you plan to visit Phuket in February, although it’s a great time of year in terms of weather, note that hotels often get booked up in advance, and prices for tours and accommodation may also be higher than during the winter months.

February is also when you may start to see locals and expats from Chiang Mai flock to the island to escape the burning season, and is when Chinese New Year takes place.

Phuket in March

  • Average Temperature: 27°C (80°F) Lows, 31°C (87°F) Highs
  • Rainfall: 94 mm in 5 Days
  • Sunlight hours: 210 hours

March continues to see warm, sunny days with cloudless skies and little rain. However, it’s also one of the busiest months in terms of visitors.

Those visiting this time of year may want to book well in advance as it’s likely a lot of places will already be booked by those escaping the burning season in Chiang Mai.

Phuket in April

  • Average Temperature: 27°C (81°F) Lows, 31°C (87°F) Highs
  • Rainfall: 143 mm in 12 Days
  • Sunlight hours: 183 hours

As the Chiang Mai residents start to make their way home, April gets a little quieter, but still maintaining decent weather throughout the month.

It’s possible to see more rainy days towards the end of the month, but these showers tend to be in bursts throughout the day, rather than torrential down pour.

During April, you get to witness the festive Songkran celebrations, with water splashing and events taking place across the island.

Phuket in May

  • Rainfall: 263 mm in 22 Days
  • Sunlight hours: 151 hours

Phuket in May sees the start of the rainy season and it comes in with full force. Witness the clouds roll in, plunging the island into darkness, as it experiences only 151 hours of daylight throughout the month.

With 22 days of rain, you can be sure that it will rain at least a couple of times during your visit.

May is also considered the off season, which means many hotels and tour companies (particularly island tours) will close during this time of year.

If you are visiting Phuket in May, it’s a good idea to check if these tours are still operating before booking.

Phuket in June

  • Average Temperature: 27°C (81°F) Lows, 30°C (85°F) Highs
  • Rainfall: 255 mm in 20 Days
  • Sunlight hours: 150 hours

June is another wet month in the monsoon season and is when you will see temperatures start to drop (although only slightly), and rainy days continue.

In terms of weather, it’s pretty much the same as May, with dark, cloudy days and lots of precipitation on the forecast.

Like May, it’s likely that some hotels will remain closed for the duration of the monsoon season, so do check in advance before visiting.

Phuket in July

  • Rainfall: 243 mm in 20 Days
  • Sunlight hours: 152 hours

July is another wet and miserable month in Phuket, with dark clouds, lots of rain, and is also when the wind speed increases.

Since it’s peak monsoon season with some of the wettest weather, you can expect the island to be quiet in terms of tourism, with many hotels and tour companies closing.

Phuket in August

  • Average Temperature: 26°C (80°F) Lows, 30°C (85°F) Highs
  • Rainfall: 265 mm in 20 Days

August and July are very similar in terms weather. It’s a dark month with only 150 hours of sunlight.

August is the most humid month, with humidity reaching 82% on average. It’s also one of the windiest months, which can make the weather feel cooler than it is.

Those visiting in August may find the weather to be miserable, and the chances of getting out to do some island exploration very slim.

Phuket in September

  • Average Temperature: 26°C (79°F) Lows, 29°C (85°F) Highs
  • Rainfall: 318 mm in 23 Days
  • Sunlight hours: 100 hours

September is the wettest month of the year and flooding is to be expected, since it’s the fifth month of the monsoon season.

September is also the darkest month with only 100 hours of sunlight throughout the month. Temperatures will remain cool, although the strong winds can make it feel cooler still.

Like August, September is also a relatively humid month.

Phuket in October

  • Average Temperature: 26°C (78°F) Lows, 29°C (85°F) Highs
  • Rainfall: 316 mm in 23 Days
  • Sunlight hours: 140 hours

October is also very rainy and can also see flooding continue, especially at the start of the month.

However, from mid-October, you will start to see more hotels and tour companies operating again, as they prepare for the busy tourist season ahead.

From mid-October, it’s possible to have some dry days with sunshine, though squally showers may still happen throughout the days and nights.

The temperatures are warm but not too hot, and is also when the Phuket Vegetarian Festival often takes place.

Compared to September, there will be more tourists in Phuket in October.

Phuket in November

  • Rainfall: 202 mm in 16 Days
  • Sunlight hours: 175 hours

As November rolls in, you can start to kiss goodbye to the rain and the dark days are officially over, with 175 hours of sunlight throughout the month.

While there is still plenty of rain expected, you will find that the showers will be more in bursts than continuous downpours which happen in June to September.

November is when more tourists come to Thailand to escape the cold weather in Europe. It’s the time when all hotels and tours are fully running again and the island gets busy.

Phuket in December

  • Average Temperature: 26°C (79°F) Lows, 30°C (86°F) Highs
  • Rainfall: 92 mm in 9 Days
  • Sunlight hours: 200 hours

December is one of the busiest months in Phuket for tourism as people flock to Thailand to experience a tropical Christmas.

The weather is often warm with very little chance of rain, and there is also minimal cloud cover which means 200 hours of bright and sunny days.

December is one of the best months to visit Phuket, though you will need to plan your visit early as hotels often get booked up, especially if your planning to spend Christmas in Thailand !

Best Time to Visit

The Best Time to Visit Phuket, Thailand

visit phuket in january

Phuket is arguably Thailand’s best all-around destination, as it’s chock-full of amazing beaches , fun waterparks, natural landscapes, and cultural connections (including some amazing food experiences ). But not all of these attractions will be accessible year-round, as the island’s three seasons impact on what visitors can see and do. The best time to visit is from mid-October to mid-February—the “winter” season that enjoys a cool, dry climate caused by northeast monsoon winds blowing in from Siberia.

Weather in Phuket

Thanks to Southern Thailand’s tropical monsoon climate, Phuket experiences weather effects from two opposing winds, which switch up annually to create three distinct seasons (if you include the sunny transitional period between monsoons).

  • Rainy season: The hot, wet southwest monsoon brings in moisture-saturated air from the Indian Ocean, causing torrential rains from mid-May to mid-October
  • Winter: The cool, dry northeast monsoon blows southward from Siberia, causing cooler, sunny and rain-free days from mid-October to mid-February
  • Summer: A transitional period with hotter days but relatively rain-free weather from mid-February to mid-May

The three seasons determine what you can see (and how much they cost) at the time you visit Phuket. High season in the “winter” months brings you great weather, but plenty of crowds and high prices to boot. Low season during the monsoon season brings low prices, but some attractions are simply inaccessible because of the rain.

For a more detailed look at the local climate from month to month, read our overview of Phuket, Thailand’s weather .

Crowds in Phuket

Phuket tends to be busier during the peak season between November and March, covering the winter months and a few weeks before and after. The crowds peak in December and January, as droves of tourists escape the bitter cold of the wintry northern hemisphere to take in the sun on Phuket’s beaches.

Plan ahead if you intend to take your chances with Phuket’s peak season. Booking hotel rooms, rides and park tickets can be more of a slog in the peak season, as you’ll have plenty of competition from other tourists.

There are two ways to avoid Phuket’s crowds. If you're unavoidably visiting in the peak season, go to your chosen destinations early in the morning. Or simply visit during the low season from May to October, when rains and humidity scare away most of Phuket’s crowds.

Tourist Attraction Availability

Phuket’s beaches tend to be safe and accessible during the peak season, but can be dangerous to swim in when the rainy season hits. High winds in the rainy season create dangerous undercurrents; Karon and Patong beaches are particularly notorious for their dangerous, unpredictable “flash rip” tides in these months. You don't have to be swimming to get caught up. When visiting Phuket's beaches, mind the red flags on the beach that signal dangerous currents; if the flags are flying, don’t go swimming.

The monsoon weather also forces authorities to close the Similan and Surin Islands between May 1 and October 15 every year. Choppy waters make travel to islands, or going diving, an iffy proposition in the rainy months.

Certain Thai holidays may limit access to certain attractions. On the Buddhist festivals of Makha Bucha Day (February) and Awk Phansa (October), for example, bars will not serve alcohol, enforcing (at least for a day) the Buddhist precept against drinking potent liquids.

Prices in Phuket

While Phuket is a year-round destination, travel to the island during high season can get expensive, with resorts, rides, and attractions jacking up prices to compensate for the surge in demand. The absolute peak occurs in January, with prices everywhere rising to an all-year high.

Flight fares to Phuket rise during high season, and also during non-peak high holidays like Loi Krathong and Hungry Ghost Festival. To snag the lowest fares on Phuket flights, most tourists purchase tickets 10 months before the target dates.

Shopping prices drop between July and August during the Amazing Grand Sale , with discounts from 10 to 80 percent on most goods in participating retail outlets.

Rainy Season

During Phuket’s rainy season between mid-May and mid-October, tourism rides out its low season, which officially starts when the Songkran festival ends on April 15.

Rainfall gradually increases, with short showers in April and May evolving to torrential downpours in September and October. Prices for hotels and transportation can hit rock-bottom lows during the rainy season; April and May offer an ideal time to visit if you’re chasing the full Phuket experience at a discount.

The island’s beaches should be avoided during rainy season, because of dangerous riptides. Mosquito-borne diseases like malaria and dengue are also increasing risks during the rainy season, so bring DEET or other anti-mosquito measures.

Events to check out:

  • Por Tor Festival ( Hungry Ghost Festival ) in August , centers around Por Tor Kong Shrine.
  • Phuket Vegetarian Festival in October is a showcase for feats of strength and vegetarian food around Saphan Hin Park.
  • October's Mid-Autumn Festival is a traditional Chinese festival drowning in mooncakes.

Outside of Phuket Old Town, visitors can take part in:

  • The Phuket Gay Pride festival at the end of April
  • The Amazing Grand Sale that brings discounts in participating stores for a month starting in Mid-June

The sunny but cool weather from October to February draws crowds to Phuket, marking the island’s high season. The weather is just perfect in the winter. The climate is marked by brilliant blue skies, with cream sands glittering in high relief against the gently lapping sea.

The tourist peak in December to January brings crowds to Phuket’s most popular beaches and to the neon-lit streets near Patong Beach after dark. Prices everywhere are higher.

  • During Loi Krathong Festival in November, locals build candlelit floats ( krathong ) and release them in honor of the water goddess Phra Mae Khongkha.
  • Phuket King's Cup Regatta is held in December to honor the King.
  • Chinese Lunar New Year in January or February, is a highly important festival date for the Peranakan and Chinese living in Phuket Old Town.

The two monsoon winds begin to switch over between mid-February and mid-May, heralding a transitional period that combines sunny weather with increasing heat and humidity that peaks between March and April.

Prices will start to come down from their peak, letting travelers enjoy a sunny Phuket vacation without the high winter prices. The overall Phuket experience (from beaches to nightlife) remains just as fun as in peak season, but with noticeably fewer tourists to share it with.

  • Makha Bucha in February is celebrated in Phuket with candlelit processions to major Buddhist temples—head over to the Phuket Big Buddha or Wat Chalong to see these unfold.
  • Songkran from April 13 to 15 is Thailand’s biggest festival. The Thai New Year is renowned for its good-natured water battles on the street (and the more respectful washing of elders' hands in homes and temples).

The best time to visit Phuket is in the mild "winter" months of mid-October to March when the temperatures are comfortable and days are dry. To avoid the worst of the crowds, visit at the very beginning or very end of the winter season.

The rainy monsoon season begins in April and gets progressively worse throughout the summer, with September and October being the wettest months of the year. This is the low season for tourism, but keep in mind that some attractions may be inaccessible if the rain is too intense.

The mild winter months are the most popular time to visit Phuket, especially for tourists who live in cold areas and want to escape to the warm Phuket beaches. November to March are busy, but the peak crowds arrive in December and January.

With picturesque beaches, beautiful architecture, highly-acclaimed cuisine and charming culture, there are many reasons Phuket is one of the most popular and fastest-growing cities in Thailand at the moment.

You can spend your holidays in Phuket relaxing on Karon Beach, enjoying a night out in Patong, scuba diving at the Similan Islands, or self-guided sightseeing in Phuket Town. But before packing a suitcase, make your dream island holidays easier with this monthly guide to the best time to visit Phuket.

January Welcome to the month of sunny skies and gentle breezes. You will experience the best weather on the island in January. The sea is calm and clear, making it perfect to enjoy leisurely swimming, snorkeling, water activities and island hopping. However, travelling Phuket during the high season can mean crowded beaches and higher prices for flight, accommodation, transportation and shopping.

February Remember to always bring a hat and sunglasses because this month is getting warmer with dazzling sunshine on a cloudless sky. If swimming with whale sharks, manta rays or sea turtles in the Andaman is on your travel bucket list, February is the best time to go diving. There are remarkable scuba diving locations around Phuket within reach of a day trip. This month is also the high season, expect the higher prices and more people.

March March in Phuket is typically hot and dry outside. Most days can be gloriously sunny with clear sky, which you might be tempted to join one of the music-filled beach parties. Weather conditions are still great for hanging out on the beach. Expect less crowds at the nightlife and entertainment venues than January and February. The tourist crowds are starting to disappear and some hotels are already offering discounted rates.

April April marks the hottest time of the year in Phuket with a high chance of consistent warm sunshine all month long. This month, the celebration of Songkran Festival takes place in Patong, where you can join in the island’s biggest water fights. Also, don’t miss your last chance to visit the Similan Islands before its annual closure from May to October. Prices for flights and accommodation in April are slightly lower than the peak tourist season.

May The green or rainy season starts from the middle of May, but there are still plenty of sunny days. Popular activities on the island during this time of the year include hiking and exploring waterfalls and large green spaces with exotic wildlife. You’re likely to find fewer crowds at tourist spots. Whilst most hotels offer low-season rates on accommodation.

June Although the rainfall generally increases, June provides more than enough sunshine and warmth. A change in season is an excellent time to be creative about your travel plan and try something other than spending time on the beach. Make sure you don’t miss on the exciting outdoor such as whitewater rafting, zip lining and ATV ride. You’ll almost always get cheaper accommodation rates and more personalized service when visiting in June.

July The island is wet and windy for most of July when monsoon rains peak. Skip long boat rides or scuba diving in rough water, and take a whole different kind of trip in Phuket town. There’s no better rainy day activity than visiting museums and treating yourself with a warm ‘Kopi’ in one of Phuket Old Town’s trendy coffee shops. You’re most likely to find low fares when visiting Phuket during this month.

August Rainfall occurs throughout most of the island during this month. Beaches are still not suitable for most activities. Whilst Phuket’s nightlife scene is much more relaxed with thinner crowds. You can often find cheaper flights, cheaper accommodations, and a good chance to enjoy some of the most popular tourist destinations in a less frenetic time of year.

September There is still a lot of rainfall in all corners of the island this month. However, visiting Phuket during low season in September can be advantages for those who wanting to save money and avoid crowds. Off-season travel will give you a more intimate experience, more contact with the locals, and much cheaper flights and accommodations.

October October marks the end of low season in Phuket with more sunshine and fewer cloudy skies than last month. National park islands like the Similans and Maya Bay on Phi Phi are re-open again this month. Also, the celebration of Phuket’s Vegetarian Festival in Phuket Town might be unlike anything you have experienced in Thailand. Prices for flights and accommodation, as well as tourist numbers still remain low.

November The long-awaited day of blue skies and sunshine is finally here. Rainfall amounts usually drop off significantly by early November in Phuket, showing the clear signs of the sunny high season beginning. The weather conditions are suitable to enjoy beach activities, scuba diving and islands hopping. Tourist numbers start to increase, as well as accommodation and flight rates.

December The weather and diving conditions in December are likely predictable – bright blue sky, no winds, hardly any waves and excellent visibility. Phuket’s nightlife is back in full swing with a lively and friendly ambiance. The attractions on the island can get quite crowded with rising tourist numbers. It’s December in Phuket and that mean prices of flight and accommodation are at their peak.

Best Time to Visit Phuket, When Is the Rainy Season?

The weather in Phuket basically varies between warm and dry (November to February), hot (March to April), and rainy (May to October). The peak season in Phuket is from October to March.

  • The best season to visit Phuket (weatherwise) is from November to February — the warm/dry season.
  • The absolute best times for comfortable weather are in December/January.
  • The best times for diving in Phuket are from November to April.
  • The best times for surfing in Phuket are from May to November.
  • The best times for enjoying the sun and beaches are from December to March.

Phuket Weather Facts

  • Phuket is a tropical island with year-round summery weather and no winter.
  • The temperature typically varies from 24°C (75°F) to 33°C (92°F).
  • April is the hottest month, and December the coolest, but there is not much difference.
  • The wettest month is September, with 12 times the rainfall of the driest month — February.
  • It rains almost every day in the rainy season, but it doesn't last all day — just half an hour to 2 hours.

Discover real reviews of Highlights Travel Family 's best-rated service across trusted platforms.

Phuket Average Temperatures by Month

Dry season in phuket (november to february).

  • November to February is the high season in Phuket, which sees the best weather of the year. Temperatures are at their most comfortable.
  • December is the coolest month of the year, and humidity drops to its lowest in February.
  • You'll get 7–9 hours of sun per day, and that means you can do more activities.
  • The busiest period in Phuket is from December to January as these months have the very best weather of all.
  • The most expensive time is the fortnight that covers the Christmas and New Year holidays, so make sure you book your hotel well in advance then.

The sea is calm and its temperature is warm, so this season is ideal for swimming, or for diving and ocean sports.

If you prefer not to participate in sports, and like lounging on the sand or attending a cooking class or a spa treatment, there are always plenty of alternative options. You could also join in the sand-sculpting festival that takes place on Karon Beach in December.

Apart from enjoying sports or relaxing on the beach, you could explore and experience the Patong Carnival and Seafood Festival. This annual week-long festival in December is one of the most celebrated in Phuket.

Increasing Crowds

Crowds start to increase steadily from December, as Christmas and New Year's Eve approach, but are still lower than the peak months to come. January is the peak of the high season.

The month of November, just after the rainy season and before the peak season, is a good time to enjoy good weather with smaller crowds.

Bang Tao Beach, Karon Beach, and Kata Beach are less-crowded beaches that are recommended for stays during the peak season. >>> Phuket Beach Guide

Rainy Season in Phuket (May to October)

  • In the rainiest months (August, September, and October), it rains for 1–2 hours in the afternoon.
  • In May, June, July, and October, there are mostly shorter downpours, usually lasting for half an hour.
  • After a brief shower, the rest of the day remains mostly clear. Your trip won't be affected too much by rain.
  • Rain has its advantages, as it will bring the temperature down a bit, and it means the rainy season has quieter beaches and better prices.
  • It won't rain every day in the rainy season. It's still possible to have some calm sunny days, and even the rainy days are mostly dry, though cloudy.

The monsoon winds make the sea turbulent and wavy. It is not a good season for scuba diving. However, it is a good season for surfing! The waves whipped up by the wind are necessary for surfing. But the thing to keep in mind is not surfing in stormy weather. The best beaches for surfing include Naiharn, Kata, Patong, Kalim, Kamala, Surin, and Naiyang.

You may be able to experience Visakha Bucha in May/June, a day for celebrating the Buddha's birth, enlightenment, and passing. You'll find worshippers forming candle-lit processions at dusk in the temples. Visitors are more than welcome to participate.

You can also find grand sales in this season, taking place across the country starting in mid-June. It's an ideal time for shoppers to take advantage of amazing deals on a variety of goods and services.

Hot Season in Phuket (March to April)

Though the dry season technically ends in March, days are generally still sunny with blue skies, and rainfall doesn't reach moderate levels until April.

April is the hottest month in Phuket. It could be scorching. April begins to be gradually affected by the monsoon and humidity rises.

It is still a good time for water activities such as diving and swimming.

There's also Thai New Year ( Songkran Festival ) from April 13 to 15, when you could celebrate with the locals and enjoy being splashed with water.

Jessie was amazing ! Everything from her level of English to her understanding of what we valued .

We had a good time exploring the city with Selinda!

Our guide lele is a wealth of information, Lele is very professional and very attentive to our needs. Lele is amazing. Lele got everything spot on. It probably helps that Guilin is a brilliant place to visit so Lele has great material to work with but that doesn't take anything away from how much Lele helped make it a great trip.

Our guide for Beijing was super knowledgeable and experienced and able to help us to achieve as much as we wanted within the time given. We had a fun time guided by him as he is also super humorous and you can see how he interacts with the vendors and people whom he comes by. Thank you for a very enjoyable time in Beijing and accommodating to all our needs!

Our China Highlight guide. Michael, was attentive, thoughtful and knowledgeable. He narrated many interesting historical events about Chengdu while touring around the city and having afternoon tea with us. He was thoughtful to provide us with snacks during long hikes at Leshan or walks around the city.

She was very flexible and added extra time when we needed it and we felt extremely well taken care of. She also chose the best restaurants for us,

Our tour guide Helen, was excellent, she was very kind, professional and passionate for her work and she also loves Pandas! She will take you to take the best panda photos and to know more about Chengdu city. Our tour was great, she took us to all our destinations always with the best spots: Temples, pagodas, famous streets, theaters, pandas...you name it! Everything was great.

He picked up our pre-booked boat/other excursions tickets so we were able to avoid all the long lines and chaos. He is knowledgeable of the places we visited, courteous, fun to travel with and well-versed in Chinese classics.

Tom is the guide that will take you to where no other guide will. We pushed for the experience and Tom and the team delivered more than what we could have ever asked for. His English speaking ability and his Chinese history knowledge is second to none.

We want to go to Phuket in January. Never been there, but only heard good ones. Let’s surprise

Weather Rating: 5 stars – Excellent

Avatar Preview

We were on Phuket last year in October until November and it was wonderful. At night there were a few thunderstorms and on the day of departure there was a heavy shower. But it’s not that bad. It stopped after half an hour and it was sunny again. I think you can always have bad luck with the weather. Just like this year in Germany, unfortunately you can’t book the weather, so be brave and try. 🙂

Avatar Preview

Just sun, no rain. Pleasant temperatures at night and perfect bathing weather during the day.

Avatar Preview

I was in Thailand for four weeks from mid-October to mid-November and on 2 November I reached the Phuket region for the remaining two weeks of my trip. Unfortunately the sea was still quite restless and it often rained. The rain was only quite short, but strong and shortly after it became more friendly again, but the humidity was very high. Would therefore recommend November only conditionally as travel time for Phuket

Weather Rating: 3 stars – Mixed

Avatar Preview

Simply perfect! It was not too hot, but still pleasantly warm and great for bathing. No rain, humidity not too high, lots of sun – ideal!

Avatar Preview

we had fantastic weather in 3 weeks. blue sky, clean clear water and always some wind which was very pleasant at over 30 degrees.

Always top sun and super warm, easy to recommend. Was at Kamala Beach, and very happy

Was very nice weather always sunshine and almost no clouds a dream

Weather and climate in December definitely milder, more pleasant and drier than Koh Samui

Why Go To Phuket

Pure white sands, aquamarine waters and limestone cliffs await travelers who visit Thailand's southwestern island of Phuket. Surrounded by the Andaman Sea and about an hour by plane from Bangkok , this island is a little piece of paradise, which comes with a relatively low price tag for everything from its accommodations to spa treatments and boat tours . But along with its tropical appeal, Phuket beckons to travelers wanting to experience its flavorful cuisine (think: lemongrass, lime leaves, chillies) and its rich culture, heavily influenced by its reigning religion: Buddhism.

And although the island's beaches and tourism operators have bounced back from the 2004 tsunami, which hammered its western coast and tragically claimed thousands of lives, it remembers the past with memorials and a better warning system, should the area once again come under threat.

Phuket Travel Tips

Best months to visit.

The best time to visit Phuket is between November and April when weather conditions are ideal for beach activities, such as swimming and boating . The six months between May and October are monsoon season, and although accommodation prices are much lower this time of year, the water conditions can be dangerous.

What You Need to Know

Learn the beach flags There are drownings every year in Phuket – not to mention daily rescues – so pay attention to the flags posted in the waters. Red means "no swimming," yellow means "be careful," and a pair of half-red half-yellow flags denote that you should swim in between the two flags.

Barter with the tuk-tuks Make sure you agree upon the price of your tuk-tuk ride before you get in to avoid being overcharged when you reach your destination.

Avoid the tap water Buying and drinking bottled water will help you avoid any water-induced stomach woes.

How to Save Money in Phuket

Book your hotel in advance You'll pay a premium if you're booking your hotel on arrival, especially during the peak season months of December and January.

Find the best exchange rate Skip the airport when you want to exchange your U.S. dollars for Thai baht. The off-brand kiosks in the main streets of popular beach towns usually offer the best rates.

Check the hotel perks Some hotels offer a complimentary shuttle service to and from the airport, as well as between popular beaches, so check out the property's perks before shelling out your baht for other modes of transport.

Culture & Customs

Thai is the official language of Thailand and its island Phuket, but you'll find that most tourist operators speak proficient English. Still, you might want to carry along a Thai phrasebook just to be safe. Some phrases you might want to memorize include: "hello," sa wat dee ; "how are you?," sa baai dee reu ; and "thank you," kòp kun mâak . When you're communicating with various taxi or tuk-tuk drivers, you might want to show them the address of your destination in Thai, especially if you're traveling to places that are off the beaten track.

Thailand's currency is the baht. One U.S. dollar is equal to about 33 Thai baht, but the exchange rate fluctuates, so be sure to check it before you go . Travelers can exchange their money at the airport, but moneychangers in various cities on Phuket offer the best exchange rates.

Buddhism is the official religion in Thailand, and the island hosts many attractions, such as Big Buddha and Wat Chalong , which reflect its predominant religion. When visiting these places, it's important that visitors respect the dress code, including wearing shorts or skirts that come to the knee and shirts that cover shoulders and midriffs.

What to Eat

Phuket's cuisine is an extension of the culinary delights found on the mainland. Tom yum goong (a soup with shrimp), som tam (a papaya salad) and green curry are all mainstays on the menus in Phuket. For an upscale Thai experience, visitors should book a table at Thong Dee The Kathu Brasserie , which earns high marks among recent travelers for its friendly and accommodating staff and consistently delicious meals. For a cheap but nonetheless delicious experience, travelers should head to O-Oh Farm Ta-Eiad in Phuket Town.

To get a deeper understanding of the local cuisine, travelers may want to book a cooking class, many of which are taught in English. The Kata Thai Cooking Class by Sally , located in Kata Beach, and Phuket Town's Phuket Thai Cookery School are both traveler-approved. At classes like these, chefs coach travelers on how to make traditional Thai foods, such as prawn soup and green curry, among other dishes. These cooking classes charge the equivalent of about $60 to $90 per person.

One of the biggest safety concerns you'll run into on a Phuket vacation are the dangerous rip tides and undertows at the beach, especially during monsoon season, which stretches from June to October. Make sure to pay attention to lifeguard warnings and all of the posted beach flags. For instance, a red flag means "no swimming," a yellow flag means "be careful," and a pair of half-red half-yellow flags signal that you should swim in between the two flags.

Because of the threat of the Zika virus, the Centers for Disease Control & Protection recommends that pregnant women and couples – or those hoping to become pregnant –

refrain from traveling to Thailand. All travelers can ward against mosquito bites by wearing bug repellant and skin-protective clothing, such as high-tech fitness wear.

There are some areas of Phuket that are known as hotbeds for sex trafficking, prostitution and drugs. For instance, Patong, which is known for its wild nightlife, is a center for such activity. Take care to be aware of your surroundings, especially in the evenings in areas like Patong.

Getting Around Phuket

The best way to get around Phuket is by tuk-tuk, though occasionally you might have to rely on another mode of travel, such as a taxi or rental car, if you want to travel beyond the town in which you're basing your vacation. Not only is a tuk-tuk (a small yellow or red truck) the most atmospheric of all transportation options, it's also one of the most convenient – they're absolutely everywhere. Still, they can be expensive for trips outside of town, and a metered taxi, songthaew or rental car might be a better option.

To reach Phuket, most travelers fly into Phuket International Airport (HKT), which is located at the island's northern end. Most of the accommodations are congregated in the south around Patong, Kata, Karon and Phuket Town. Travelers should check if their hotel offers an airport shuttle, and if not, they can hop in an airport bus, which takes travelers to Phuket Town. A taxi is probably the easiest and most efficient way to traverse the distance between the airport and accommodations. Although there are vans and minibus operators that offer rides from the airport to these southern locations, it can be hard to decipher which ones are reputable. If your hotel does not offer a shuttle service, ask if the concierge can recommend any reputable van or minibus operators.

Phuket is a riot of colors, from its aquamarine waters to its vegetation-covered rock formations.

Phuket is a Thai island, considered one of the wonders of the Asian continent . There you will find as many activities to do as there are kinds of travelers. Therefore, during your stay in January you will not have to worry, as fun is guaranteed.

During this month, weather conditions are quite favorable: little rain, lots of sunshine and low humidity . Undoubtedly, one of the best times to visit the island and discover the best things to do in Phuket . For example, celebrate the Chinese New Year, buy seasonal products at the traditional market, visit the Monkey Cave and much more.

1. Celebrate Chinese New Year in Phuket Island

If your trip to Phuket coincides with the second half of January, then you can enjoy the Chinese New Year celebration on the island . Be part of an ancient tradition and enjoy a series of colorful cultural performances.

This celebration is very popular on the island, due to the large number of Chinese inhabitants living there. Therefore, to enjoy the traditional events that Chinese New Year entails, you will just have to approach the different streets, markets and local temples.

For example, some destinations are the following:

  • Jui Tui Shrine Temple , a 14th century Buddhist compound belonging to the Chinese community. There, you can watch the Dragon Dance, light some incense sticks to purify yourself, read your fortune for the year ahead and eat some snacks.
  • Phuket Old Town and Bangla Street. You will see musical performances by street performers, witness some parades with traditional dragons and lions, a big fireworks show and much more.

In addition, you can go to the local markets around the Wat-Chalong Temple . These are usually one of the must-visit destinations on any food tour of Phuket and New Year's celebration. You can try some traditional dishes such as rice balls, spring rolls, longevity noodles, among others.

If you are a photography enthusiast or simply want to immortalize good memories of your visit, you should know that the clear skies and moderate temperature of January in Phuket are favorable conditions to take amazing pictures . All you have to do is create a route with the different tourist destinations on the island, grab your camera and set off.

Some of the most photogenic places on the island that you can visit are the following:

  • Phuket's old town, which stands out for its Sino-Portuguese architecture , present in buildings, palaces and stores. A picturesque and lively scene, frequented by dozens of locals.
  • The temple complex of Wat Chalong, which houses gardens, Buddha paintings, golden statues and many more relics. It is one of the most important Buddhist temples on the island.
  • The Great Buddha Maravija , whose marble structure totally dominates the island's landscape.
  • The viewpoint of Cape Promthep, a large rocky hill located approximately 60 meters above sea level.

After this photographic adventure on the island, you can continue with other activities on your itinerary. For example, buy tickets for a show at Simon Cabaret in Phuket, the latter being a good option to incorporate among the things to do in Phuket at night.

The island of Phuket in January offers a sunset with wonderful contrasts, which you won't want to miss. Join a boat ride along the island's coastline and stop at Promthep Cape to see a dozen warm colors tint the sky, thanks to the season's low rain and cloud cover .

Just connect with a cruise service for this scenic adventure, which usually starts at the marina in Ao Chalong Bay . There, you will set sail for Koh Hey, also called Coral Island, where you will get a privileged panoramic view: clear waters surrounded by white sand and lush vegetation.

You will also stroll along Promthep Cape, where you will stop to watch the sunset. This is a cape with a picturesque natural scene, where you will be about 60 meters above sea level and enjoy a magical view of the ocean and the sun setting on the horizon as it covers the sea with its last rays.

Whether you plan to stay 1 to 5 days in Phuket or even longer, this scenic adventure along the coast of the island is a must-see activity during the month of January. After docking at the harbor, you can continue the fun with activities such as a Phuket pub c rawl.

This is one of the best day trips from Phuket , allowing you to get away from the hustle and bustle of the island. You will travel by car with a driver-guide to Phang Nga province (about 70 minutes). You'll also enjoy the picturesque scenery, led by limestone cliffs.

You'll arrive at Wat Tham Suwan Khuha Cave Temple , whose stalactite-lined interior houses a number of Buddhist artifacts and sculptures, including a 15-meter-long reclining golden Buddha . And, if you're lucky, you might even catch a monk meditating.

Next, you'll head to Mueang Phang-nga, to jump into the water for a thrilling 5-kilometer whitewater rafting experience. Afterwards, you will jump on a 150-meter-long zip line. To end this monkey cave, rafting and zip line tour from Phuket, you will head to Sa Nang Manora Forest Park for an open-air walk and view of a reservoir pond.
