Update: Wow air has gone out of business.

We’ve put together a general review of WOW air to give you a quick glance at the airline from a customer’s viewpoint.

Since this isn’t an airline you hear about every day, we know lots of folks have questions: Where does WOW air fly? Will I get snacks when I fly on WOW air? How much does WOW air charge for baggage fees? What are people saying about WOW air?

In this post, we’ve outlined some basic company statistics, ticketing/fare options, those pesky extra fees (including  baggage fees ), seat specs, inflight amenities, customer satisfaction rankings, and more.

Airline: WOW air

Alliance:  None

Category: Low-Cost Airline

Frequent Flyer Program: None

Tag Line:  We promise you that WOW feeling!

About/Mission Statement: “WOW air is committed to providing the cheapest flights to and from Iceland and across the Atlantic, while providing a memorable service all the way.” (source)

Daily Flights:  Variable, ~50-55

Fleet: 20 (plans to increase to 24 by the end of 2018)

Main Hub:  Keflavík International Airport, KEF (Greater Reykjavík Area, Iceland)

Destinations:  37 (across Europe, North America, and Asia) – note that from November 2018, US routes are being reduced in frequency or cut entirely due to financial difficulties at the airline

WOW air Route Map

Ticketing Options

Yes, WOW is a budget airline. Yes, fares are appropriated accordingly. Yes, you’ll pay for extras.

However, with options for such ridiculously low fares, it might be worth it!

WOW air Example Airfares

WOW air provides 4 fare options. Depending on which option you select, you might pay extra fees based on selected add-ons like priority boarding, seat selection, etc.

WOW basic:  This fare is exactly what it sounds like: the most basic fare WOW has to offer. WOW “basic” includes your flight ticket and 1 personal item (limited to 42 x 32 x 25cm and 10kg). That’s it!

This means you’ll pay extra for things like a carry-on, checked bag, seat assignment, or snacks (see baggage/fees section below). Additionally, cancellations are not refunded.

WOW plus:  This fare gets you a bit more bang for your buck. WOW “plus” includes your flight ticket, 1 personal item (above size limitations apply), 1 carry-on (limited to 56 x 45 x 25cm and 12kg), 1 checked bag, and a seat reservation (with standard legroom). Again, cancellations are not refunded.

WOW  notes : “WOW Plus will always be cheaper than adding to the WOW Basic fare. That’s guaranteed.”

WOW comfy:  This fare is the 3rd fare option offered by WOW. “Comfy” includes your flight ticket, 1 personal item (above size limitations apply), 1 carry-on (above size limitations apply), 1 checked bag, a seat reservation (best available at the time of booking – either XL or XXL), and cancellation protection.

WOW premium:  This is the most expensive and inclusive ticket option WOW offers. WOW “premium” includes your flight ticket, 1 personal item (above size limitations apply), 1 carry-on (above size limitations apply), 2 (TWO) checked bags, cancellation protection, and guaranteed BigSeat. PLUS, you also get priority check-in at Reykjavik airport (KEF), fast track through security at 4 popular airports (KEF, LGW*, CHP & EDI), priority boarding at all airports, an in-flight meal and no change fees.

As you can imagine, there are minimal (read: fewer) added/extra fees associated with this fare.

Wow Air Fare Breakdown

It’s important to note that WOW Basic and WOW Plus fares cannot  be upgraded after initial booking. So if you want more perks included in your base fare, choose Plus or Biz from the start.

WOW Air, Captain and Flight Attendant in Iceland

If you’re flying between the U.S. and Europe on round-trip flights, WOW air offers a stopover option in Iceland for no additional cost. This is different than a layover in that the stopover can extend for multiple days. Additionally, the stopover may be selected for the outbound or return journey at the customer’s preference.

However, WOW air provides the following disclaimer related to the WOW Stopover:

“There is no additional charge for creating a WOW Stopover in Iceland. However, when booking two separate flight legs instead of a connecting flight with a short layover, each leg can be higher (or lower) priced. It depends on supply and demand for each flight. In some cases the price can therefore be higher, lower or even almost the same. Also note that, when entering a new country, airport taxes for that airport could be different between stopping in Iceland and traveling directly via Iceland over the Atlantic ocean.”

Hot Tip:  The WOW air stopover includes 3 flight legs. This means you will pay for baggage fees times 3 since they’re applicable on EACH leg: A to B, B to C, and C to A.

While WOW air does not have a frequent flyer program at this time, they do have a program called WOW club.

WOW club includes signing up for exclusive deals and special offers to be received before the general public via email. Customers participating in WOW club may also receive information about WOW destinations and special promotions. (WOW states you can unsubscribe at any time.)

Wow Baggage & Other Fees/Add-ons

Since WOW air offers a couple different ticketing options, baggage fees and add-on/extra fees are charged accordingly. Some fees will be charged regardless of which ticketing option you choose, so keep this in mind when you’re planning to fly WOW air.

Baggage Fees:  With WOW air, baggage prices depend on the fare option you choose when purchasing your ticket and the specific route flown.

As we mentioned earlier, with WOW Basic, you’ll pay fees if you bring anything other than a personal item. WOW Plus and WOW Biz fares include a carry-on and a checked bag.

It’s also important to note that baggage fees increase the closer you get to take-off. So try to pre-purchase your desired baggage allowance during your initial booking if you want to save the most money.

The size/weight limitations for WOW air baggage are as follows:

  • Personal item: 17″ x 13″ x 10″
  • Standard carry-on: 22″ x 18″ x 10″ (max weight of 26lbs)
  • Checked bag: max linear dimensions of 62″ (max weight of 44lbs)

The following table displays a range of baggage fees for most WOW air routes   to/from the U.S. to Reykjavík,  per leg. However, for the most accurate baggage fee calculations, please use WOW air’s online baggage calculator tool .

The following table displays a range of baggage fees for most WOW air routes   to/from the U.S. to Europe via Reykjavík,  per leg. Again, for the most accurate baggage fee calculations, please use WOW air’s online baggage calculator tool .

Hot Tip:  Let us reiterate that the above prices are PER LEG. Since all flights have 1 leg outbound and 1 inbound, you should expect your baggage prices to be double what’s listed here. This is pretty normal; any typical airline that charges fees for baggage will charge per flight or leg.

Other Baggage Related Fees:  Here are a few other baggage-related fees WOW air charges.

Carry-on Bag Change Fee: $30 (this applies if your carry-on is overweight/oversize and you choose to change it to a checked bag at the check-in counter; if you do not and you are forced to check it at the gate this will cost you $100)

Overweight Baggage: $20 per kilo, max of 12kg extra per bag

Sporting Equipment/Special Baggage: $76-$116 ( see fee page for specifics)

Service Charge 1:  If you want to save money, book online! Booking through the call center will cost you $28  per guest, per flight leg.  That can add up quickly!

Service Charge 2:  Try to book all your extras like baggage and seating at the same time you book your flight, and do it online. This $18 fee is charged  per guest, per flight leg  if you have to book bags and seats through the call center after your initial booking is made.

Flight Change:  In addition to any fare difference between the flights (if applicable), customers are charged a $91 fee per guest, per flight leg.

Name Change:  $91  per guest, per flight leg;  this service is not available to/from U.S. within 72 hrs of flight departure.

Name Spelling Correction:  $18  per guest, per flight leg.

Cancellation Protection: $25  per guest, per flight leg.

Unaccompanied Minor: $90. Per WOW air: Not available on connecting flights between North America and Europe. A service charge has to be paid for a child traveling unaccompanied for each individual flight. If 2 or more children (siblings) are traveling together without a parent or guardian, only 1 charge will be applied per leg of the journey.

Seat Reservation Fees:  These fees vary significantly based on which flight route is taken and which seat is desired. Customers can choose from:

  • Standard Seat – Back
  • Standard Seat – Front
  • XL extra legroom
  • XXL extra legroom

Please see WOW air’s extra fees page for details on seat reservation pricing.

Priority Boarding:  $10; must be purchased during initial booking.

Refreshments Onboard:  Other than meals included with WOW Biz fares, all other refreshments are available for a fee. Customers should also note that certain meals are not available from certain locations. Sandwiches and light snacks like chips, yogurt, and chocolates are included in the inflight menu.

WOW air, In-Flight Meal Deals as of Aug 2017

Larger food items range from $9.50-$11.00, while meal deals can be purchased for about $15. Snacks vary from $3-$7, and non-alcoholic beverages cost around $3.30. If you’d like an adult beverage, you’re looking at between $8-$14 depending on your preference.

WOW air also gives customers the option to pre-order a meal from a special menu up to 48 hours before their flight (service not available on Chicago, LA, Miami, San Francisco, or Tel Aviv routes). This can be done on the WOW air website via  My Booking.

WOW air, Flight Attendants Onboard

What will my WOW air flight look like? If you’re wondering, here’s all the info you need:

Inflight Amenities:  As we previously mentioned, this depends on which WOW air base fare you choose and which add-ons you purchase. To run a low-cost airline, certain amenities some customers are accustomed to with larger airlines simply aren’t available.

  • WOW air does not provide inflight Wi-Fi, video streaming capabilities, or any onboard entertainment. WOW air encourages customers (especially those with children) to bring something fun to do with them.
  • While the above is true, customers on North American routes have the option to rent an iPad “full of entertainment.” WOW air’s website does not currently list the cost of this rental.
  • There are universal power outlets onboard WOW air’s A321 and A330 aircraft.
  • Unless you’ve picked a WOW Biz ticket, refreshment service is limited to paid beverages and snacks only.

WOW air, Aircraft Interior - better seats

Seat Specs:  Seat specs and seat arrangements vary quite a bit depending on which WOW air flight you’re on. We’ve listed WOW air’s fleet according to plane type, and then documented how many of each size seat is available. Seat widths are not disclosed on the WOW air seating maps .

  • Standard Seats*: 29″-30″ pitch
  • Standard+ Seats*: 29″-30″ pitch
  • XL Seats: 32″-33″ pitch
  • XXL Seats: 35″+ pitch
  • BigSeat: 37″+ pitch

*WOW states the difference in their Standard & Standard+ seats has to do with their location on the plane. Seats in the back of the plane or seats in the middle row are often considered “Standard” while seats in the front of the plane, window seats  or aisle access are considered “Standard+”.

You may have noticed WOW air has some unique registration names for their planes. They state : “We like to keep our registration names fun and a bit different as they represent WOW air in a BIG way.”

WOW air, Aircraft Interior - tray tables

Customer Satisfaction

We hear it all the time…air travel used to be glamorous.

In an age where it seems like there’s a general negativity surrounding airport and airline experiences, passengers regularly wear sweatpants to fly, and aviation branding is lackluster, WOW Air stands out.

The first thing you notice about WOW—whether you’re booking a flight on the website, perusing their facebook page, or flying with the airline itself—is their clean, modern feel. They seem to be promoting air travel in all the right ways and they look damn good doing it. (Are we allowed to say that?)

Plus, the Wow air team looks like they’re having FUN. Imagine that…airline employees having some actual fun!? Just look at them all giggly and smiling!

Wow Airlines Employees Having Fun!

WOW even expands on this as one of their “Promises”: “Everything we do has the WOW factor! Everything from how we make the coffee at the office to how we welcome our guests on board. Simply put – We’re fun, free, and we love smiling, and we hope our guests will smile back and maybe laugh at some of our jokes.”

Why is all this important?  Because it makes you want to fly with them.

But Is It Enough?

WOW air suffers from wildly furious consumer complaints similar to a lot of other low-cost airlines like Spirit. Many complaints revolve around flight delays, tarmac delays, baggage delays, lost baggage, and horrible customer service.

There are even Facebook groups and Twitter handles dedicated to WOW air complaints.

Poor Transparency, Although Honest

A number of other complaints are due to WOW air’s poor transparency—basically, the fact that WOW air charges extra for “everything,” but many customers don’t expect that since it’s not advertised all over their homepage.

It’s certainly difficult to determine the total price of your ticket until you click all the way through to the purchase page. Additionally, it can be tough to find the exact price of some fees on their website.

That being said, WOW is honest in that they clearly state what’s included in your Basic, Plus, and Biz fares. And you can find the extra fees if you look around the website hard enough.

In a sense, if you’re an informed consumer, you already know to expect extra fees before booking. So, while there are a lot of these complaints, we don’t consider them particularly valid.

What are the most common WOW air complaints?

The August 2017 Air Travel Consumer Report filed by Transportation.gov lists the following 264 complaints against WOW air for January 2017 through June 2017.

  • Baggage: 65 / 24.6%
  • Flight Problems (cancellation, delay, or misconnection): 58 / 22%
  • Reservation, Ticketing, Boarding: 52 / 19.7%
  • Refunds: 30 / 11.4%
  • Fares: 24 / 9.1%
  • Customer Service: 16 / 6.1%
  • Other: 7 / 2.7%
  • Over-Sales: 5 / 1.9%
  • Disability : 5 / 1.9%
  • Discrimination: 2 / 0.8%

There are a number of different systems out there when it comes to airline ratings and reviews. We’ve taken a few of the most popular and presented them here.

SkyTrax Ranking:   3  Star Airline (out of 5)

SkyTrax Customer Rating:  4/10 (average from 273 reviews)

AirHelp.com Overall Rating: 6.9/10 (quality of amenities, on-time arrivals, and how well an airline resolves flight delay compensation claims)

AirHelp.com Delay Report:  AirHelp.com reports that WOW air flights are heavily delayed or canceled only 0.53% of the time.

AirHelp.com Most Disrupted Route:  ALC (Alicante) to KEF (Reykjavik) is disrupted 75% of the time

SimpliFlying Awards for Excellence in Social Media, 2017: A Top 3 Airline, Branding

SimpliFlying Awards for Excellence in Social Media, 2017: Best Airline, Launches; Best Airline in Europe, Overall; A “Highly Commended” Airline, Branding

Skytrax World Airline Awards 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017:  7th Best Low-Cost Airline in Europe; did not break World’s Best Low-Cost Airline top 20 list; did not  break World’s Best Airlines Top 100 list.

WOW Air, Try Something New Campaign

If you do your research and know what you’re getting with each ticket option, WOW air may save you some cash to certain destinations. This is especially true if you have an applicable credit card that saves on costs related to added fees like baggage and in-flight purchases.

Keeping in mind that WOW air is a fairly young airline, we expect them to continue to make strides toward improved performance in the future.

So, if you don’t mind a fairly basic flight without a lot of included amenities and you aren’t too bothered by potential delays or baggage issues, WOW air could be a viable option.

Plus, if you’re looking to visit Iceland, doing so on a stopover at little to no extra charge (if you book the right flights) is a great perk!

The Ultimate Guide to Flying with WOW Air!

Let me be the first to tell you.  I LOVE Wow Air, but because they are an ultra low cost carrier, there are some quirks that the first timer needs to understand. There are many reviews online of people complaining about WOW Air, and that’s usually because they were not aware of the quirks and charges for extras, and they didn’t do their due diligence before buying their ticket.  I’m going to break everything down for you here, so you will understand everything you need to know before you book, you’ll know what to look out for, and ultimately get the lowest price possible.  I’ve flown on Wow Air on 6 separate occasions and each time was pleasurable in terms of getting to where I needed to go and most importantly, price!

So here goes.  I’ve tried to be as comprehensive as possible.  I will be updating this page as needed.  In the meantime, if there is anything useful you’d like to know that’s not covered here, leave a comment and I’ll respond ASAP.

Where They Fly

WOW Air, classified as an ULCC (Ultra Low Cost Carrier) has recently broken into North America, and has many great flight deals to/from North America, Iceland, and Europe.

In North America, they currently fly to/out of Boston, Chicago, Cincinnati, Cleveland, Dallas, Detroit, Los Angeles, Miami, Montreal, New York, Pittsburgh, San Francisco, St. Louis, Toronto , and Washington.

Booking on WOW Air

Book on the WOW Air website directly. https://www.wowair.com

It’s important to book directly on the WOW Airlines website, and not to use an OTA or Flight Metasearch Site (the big ones are Expedia, Cheaptickets, Kayak, Google Flights, etc), and it’s important to book directly with WOW Airlines.

  • I’ve never ever seen a better flight price for a WOW Airlines then what is available on their website.
  • WOW Airlines goes through step by step with you throughout the process so you know what you are paying for, and what you are not.  Every step of the way it makes it clear what you can upgrade now, and upgrade later, and what the prices are.  For example, if you book your WOW Air flight with Orbitz, you will not get the chance to upgrade to pick your seat – that can only be done at the time of purchase when purchasing directly from WOW Air.

As with all flight booking sites, with WOW Air, you will chose your origin, destination, and flight dates.

Promo Codes

WOW Air sometimes releases new promo codes via social media, so when DanCanTravel finds great deals with WOW Air promo codes we list them as part of our deal post along with discount pricing information.

WOW Air allows you to book a stop over on their booking site.  This means if you are flying between North America and Europe, you can scam a free stop-over at no extra charge in Iceland.  This is great for someone who wants to get their feet wet on Icelandic soil, and catch the northern lights, spend a Saturday in Reykjavik experiencing their epic night life scene, or exploring the incredible wonders Iceland has to offer.

When you select your dates and itinerary, WOW Air brings up the available flight dates and ticketing/seating options.  It’s very useful to navigate through the dates to see which days offer the cheapest deals.  (This is one technique DanCanTravel uses to find great deals for you)

wow travel online booking

Ticketing Class Explained

There are multiple ticketing levels for each leg of your flight, and each level comes with specific privileges.  Click the ‘What is included?’ link for each ticket option to see the details.

Generally, the following rules apply:

WOW Basic: 1 personal item only – less than standard carry-on size, suitable for a small backpack.

WOW Plus:  Personal item, carry-on bag, and a checked Bag.

WOW Comfy:  Everything in WOW Plus, a seat with extra legroom, and cancellation protection.

WOW Biz: Everything that ol’ comfy gets + priority boarding and an in-flight-meal.

wow travel online booking

Once you have selected your itinerary, you are taken to a screen where you can buy all of your extras.  Now, the prices do fluctuate slightly, but the actual prices will be on the WOW Air site at the time of booking.  You will pay per each flight leg, and you can purchase extras on all legs or specific legs only.

Special Equipment like a golf bag or surf board $72CAD to $130CAD per flight -.  If you are planning a surf or golf trip, you may need to do this, otherwise ignore it.

Baggage (important)

This is the most important option to consider.  $50 to $54 per leg to add a carry-on bag. This is expensive, and if you are planning to travel just to Iceland, you are looking at an extra $100CAD on the total cost of your journey.  If you are travelling to Europe, then you are looking at an extra $200CAD.  That’s expensive!

If you have a WOW Plus ticket or higher, then you already have one carry-on included as well as a personal item.

However, if you are getting the discounted WOW Basic ticket, then you are limited only to a small personal item like a small backpack.

The small personal item carry-on needs to fit the following dimensions –> Maximum  42x32x25cm | 17x13x10in .  This is smaller than a standard carry-on suitcase, but good for a small suitcase or backpack.

The upgrade to one standard carry-on bag gives you the option to bring a standard carry-on item along with your personal item.  Max weight of the standard carry-on is 10kg with max dimensions of  56x45x25cm | 22x18x10i n including all wheels and handles.

Pack Light :   When flying WOW Air, you need to pack light to get the most dollar value out of your ticket.  I’d recommend using a backpack as they are generally softer and can usually squish down in size if they are ever questioned by a gate agent about the size of the backpack.  On a short trip, I’ve been able to bring a small backpack with 4-5 days of clothes pretty easily without needing to upgrade to a standard carry-on.

The Others : You can go ahead and purchase cancellation protection (see the section below about cancellation), an airport transfer, or priority boarding, but personally, it’s probably not worth it.  For cancellation protection, I’d recommend using a credit card which gives you that option automatically.

Seating (important)

After selecting options, you can now choose your seats, and can upgrade from Standard to Standard+, XL, or XXL.  I’ve sat in most of these seats on my various WOW Air flights, and the XL and XXL are pretty comfortable with the extra leg room, however, I am generally adverse to paying extra unless I really need to be comfortable because I’m arriving for a first thing in the morning meeting upon arrival (which to be honest, never happens).  However, on a flight to Reykjavik, I did luck out and buy the XL seat, and got lucky.  Most people didn’t upgrade, so I ended up not only with an XL seat, but a row of three seats to myself to take a nap while the ‘standard’ seat folks were packed like sardines in the back.

Tip : It’s only about $9CAD to choose your ‘standard seat’ for each leg, and it may be worth it just to get a window seat or isle seat.  The middle seat is always terrible, so depending on your comfort tolerance it may be worth the upgrade.  If you let the airline chose your seat for you, there is a solid chance you’ll get a middle seat for at least part of your journey.

Prices vary for seating, but you’ll pay roughly $50CAD per leg for the XXL and $38CAD per leg for the XL.

Important:   You cannot select your seat during check in, so you have the option to upgrade to do this when buying the ticket, or later online through the WOW Air web site.  It’s a good reason to use the WOW Air website for booking.  You can’t do this at check in, nor at the counter unless you beg and plead with WOW Air, but of which there are no guarantees.

Tip : If you chose to upgrade to select your seat, I’d recommend a window seat if you want to have a chance to see the northern lights at night if flying into Iceland during night.  Otherwise, a window seat leaving Iceland to North America on the right side of the plane gets you a great view as you pass over Greenland (pic below).

Important:  If you are booking for 2 or more people, and it’s important you sit together, then you might want to upgrade to select your seat.  Otherwise, it’s quite probably, otherwise, that the seats you buy will not be seated together.

WOW Air will give you the option to buy tours or rent a car prior to booking.  I generally skip all this, as I’ve never seen something strike me as being a great deal, but I’m sure there are good deals from time to time.  Do the comparison and see if it’s worth it, but I generally never bother and end up booking online on other sites, or once I am on the ground at my destination.

Check In Online

Always check-in online, regardless of if it’s WOW Air or any other airline.   Although most do, some airlines are jerks and don’t let you check-in online, but with WOW Air, it’s easy and do-able.  Check in within 24 hours of your departure and either print your boarding pass at home or, my favourite, add it to your Apple/Google wallet on your iPhone or Android.

Checking in at the ticket counter at the airport is a newbie mistake.  It takes longer, there are big lines, and once you are there you are at the mercy of the airline agent, who will do everything in his or her power  to charge you more.  This means taking the time to weigh your baggage, and forcing you to check it in if necessary (at high fees) to measuring the size of your carry-on to ensure you purchased the adequate carry-on upgrade if required.  If they discover any discrepancies, you are on the hook to pay the outrageous at the airport upgrade prices.  This catches some people by surprise and afterwards they go on about how they will never fly Wow Air again.  However, once you re prepared, you essentially can beat the system and keep your discounted prices!

While you won’t have the option to upgrade or select your seat at check-in time, the other upgrade options as indicated above, will be available, but at much higher prices.

Important : Save the hassle.  Check in online.  Always.  You don’t want surprises at the airport!

Do I really need to pay extra for my carry-on baggage?  Can’t I just slip through?  How would they know?

That’s a good question.  If you pack light, you don’t need to pay for any upgrade.  There are two tiers of carry-on ticketing;  ones who have paid for a carry-on (incl. a personal item) and ones who have paid for a personal item only , you may be wondering how the gate agent know who’s who.  You’ll see people walking on the plane with small backpacks, large ones, and standard carry-ons.  Some of them paid the upgrade, and some didn’t.  The gate agents will know by looking at your ticket.  The ticket, regardless of if it’s an e-ticket or paper ticket will display “Carry-On” if you are allowed the standard carry-on in addition to the personal item.  See below.

wow travel online booking

That being said, of the 6 or so Wow Air flights I’ve been on, I’ve only seen agents at the gate  check someones bag a few times to make sure it fits as per their ticket and as per carry-on requirements.  That’s at the gate.  At the check-in counter, you can bet they will check every-time which is why I repeatedly say , you should always avoid the check in counter at all costs.  Always… Always….

If you are not obviously flaunting an over-sized bag, two large bags, or acting suspicious otherwise, it’s quite probable you could go through unnoticed with a standard carry-on sized bag even though you didn’t buy the carry-on upgrade.  If they catch you at the gate, fees are going to be steep – upwards of $60CAD per leg for that extra carry-on bag, or more if it’s beyond carry-on size and you are forced to check in at the gate (unlikely, but I’ve seen it with other airlines).

Although it’s likely do-able, I don’t condone this behaviour and do it at your own risk.  I’ve paid extra for the carry-on, and other times not.  I’ve used a small backpack that was technically bigger than the allowed personal item size, but it was a soft backpack that could squish inside the metal bag size checking apparatuses they have at the counter.  They never bothered to check.

The maximum size for the personal item is 42x32x25cm | 17x13x10in.  For the standard carry-on item, the max weight is 10kg, and any legal carry-on sized suit case or backpack (56x45x25cm | 22x18x10in) will be fine.

The lines move fast, walk through the line, look confident, and remember the gate agents generally want the line to go smoothly to get the flight off the ground.  They don’t check everyone’s carry-on.

Connections at the Airport in Iceland from Schengen and Non-Schengen Areas

When connecting to/from North America and Europe through Iceland, you will make that connection at the Keflavik International Airport (KEF) in Keflavik.

Important: If you are connecting to a Schengen Area country (ex: Belgium, France, Germany, etc)   from Canada or the United States , you will land at KEF and proceed immediately through customs.  This is the same as those who are entering Iceland from North America or from a non-Schengen country with the plan to stay in Iceland.  It’s important to note that you will do your customs check in Iceland rather than in Europe for Schengen Area destinations. Once you arrive at your European destination you will just get off the plane and get on with it.  No customs or passport control.

If you are connecting to a non-Schengen Area country (ex: The UK, or Israel) from Canada or the United States, you will stay in your arrival terminal, and you will not proceed through customs.    This is because you are not staying in Iceland or going to the Schengen area.  You will go through customs and passport control when you reach your final destination in the UK or Israel (such as Dublin, London, or Tel-Aviv).

If you are connecting  to North America from a   Schengen Area country  (ex: Belgium, France, Germany, etc)   you will go through passport control and customs in Iceland in order to get your exit stamp, and you will then go through passport control and customs again once you hit your final destination in the USA or Canada.

If you are connecting  to North America from a  non- Schengen Area country  (ex: The UK, or Israel)   you will not go through passport control and customs in Iceland in order to get your exit stamp, but you go through passport control and customs again once you hit your final destination in the USA or Canada.  Once you arrive in the terminal in Iceland, stay there.  Don’t leave looking for passport control because you will leave and have to come back.

Important: Watch the monitors to find out your connection information.  When in doubt, find the Wow Air Customer Service terminal after leaving the plane (this is always found in the terminal you arrive in) and ask for help.

Iceland is considered a non-EU state that is part of Schengen area and applies common Schengen area customs and border control.

Icelandic Goods at the Airport

There is a huge marketplace at the airport, after you go through customs, where you can stock up on goods or coffee before your connecting flights.  You will generally be connecting in the early morning from North America or the afternoon from Europe.

Be prepared for sticker shock in Iceland, even at the airport.  Iceland itself is expensive, and the airport is more expensive.

There are several coffee shops where you can buy expensive specialty coffees and deserts, but if you want to try some very specific Icelandic delicacies, I recommend the following which are all available at the airport.

Kleinur – Icelandic doughnut.  This plain twisted Icelandic doughnut is generally served plain and was one of my favourite snacks in Iceland.  Now, on the mainland they are excellent.  I was not happy with the quality at the airport, but maybe you will have better luck then me.  If you see some fresh ones, go for it.

Skyr – Traditional Icelandic Yogurt which is similar yet smoother and milder than traditional greek yogurt.  Multiple brands and flavours  are available at the airport, or even in-flight with Wow Air.  It’s important to note that this is actually a cheese rather than a yogurt, but you wouldn’t know that by tasting it.

Hardfiskur – Icelandic dried fish.  This is pieces of fish that have been dried out to be suitable used as a crunch snack.  It’s delicious and multiple types of fish are available, including, cod, haddock, and wolffish.

The check-out lines move quick.  I unofficially state that the Credit Card / Debit machines used in Iceland are the fastest in the world!  You will notice this at the airport too.

WOW Airlines accepts Visa or Mastercard as payment only.  I do have a beef with Wow Airlines that they do not accept American Express .  My amex gives me a lot of travel benefits which unfortunately will never apply to a Wow Airlines flight until they decide to start accepting Amex as payment.

Rewards Programs and Partners

WOW Air has no reward program, no place to enter a frequent flyer number, and there are no airline reward programs that work with WOW Airlines for award flights.

It has no partner airlines, no partner airline alliances, they don’t do codesharing, or inter-ticketing, and therefore you can’t book a single ticket which has a WOW Air flight connection with a flight from another airline.  Many of their competitors who fly to Iceland will code share, so depending where you live, these airlines are options.

Competition

Icelandic Air is also an Icelandic airline with flights to/from Iceland to other parts of the world including North America and Europe.  It’s good to check competitor airlines for deals – sometimes you get lucky, but Icelandic Air prices are generally much more expensive, and often more than double the price of a WOW Air flight, however they are a regular airline with a standard level of airline service.  That being said, I have seen very expensive prices on WOW Air during busy periods, and I’ve also seen Icelandic Air beat WOW Air on pricing from time to time. Icelandic Air sometimes do have sales and good value, so DanCanTravel makes sure to scout those ticket prices often as well.

From Europe, Wizz, EasyJet, and Transavia are also ULCC’s which can compete with WOW Air on price.

Other airlines that fly to Iceland from North America, include:  Air Canada, Delta, American Airlines, and United Airlines.

Other airlines that fly to Iceland from Europe, include: Austrian Airlines, British Airways, Iberia Express, Lufthansa, and Transavia.

Cancellation Policy

Important:  Any flight purchased, regardless of class or ticket, can be cancelled free of charge within 24 hours of purchase if the ticket departs or arrives in the United States.  This is as per  “U.S. Department of Transportation  Customer Service Plan” regulations (14 CFR Part 259.5).

Flights departing to/from Canada, Europe, are not eligible to the same level of 24 hour cancellation protection, although if you absolutely need to cancel, call their customer service anyway and give it a go.

All other cancellations are available though the purchase of cancellation insurance as per above.  This insurance generally only protects you in cases of sudden illness, death of an immediate family member, or significant damage to your home or business along with a police report.   They will not cover cancellations of any auxiliary items you have purchased from them including rental cars and tours.

Important:  This is why I recommend a credit card which will give you this same level of protection for free.  Providing this cancellation insurance is a gouge by airlines and travel agencies; restrictions are so tight, and there are very few eligible claims.

Change Policy

Name changes can be changed 72 hours prior to departure by calling their customer service number.

Flight date and time changes, connection changes, and destination changes can be made 24 hours a day via their customer service centre by telephone, or online (except for destination changes).

Changes cannot be made once you have checked-in for the flight or beyond 4 hours from the departure time.

Important: You will pay a fixed fee for any changes, as well as any increases in flight tickets based on your new itinerary.  You will not get a discount or refund when changing to a cheaper ticker.

From personal, experience this works well.  I even called Wow Air the day of a return flight from Iceland to Toronto asking to change my flight to leave the next day.  It cost me $100CAD total, but it was worth it for another day in Iceland – I love Iceland!

They have a fee schedule that will vary depending on flight and date, and you will be presented with a link for the fee schedule during the booking process – also available on the WOW Air website.

I will never travel WOW again. And I haven’t even traveled with them yet. They are incredibly restrictive and unaccommodating. You will never see an actual WOW employee at any airport they serve. They are hiding behind contractors who do their dirty work for them. In my case the check-in agents were not at check-in up to the last minute and I, unfortunately, was a last-minute person. Result: I was denied boarding. Further result: they keep my money, will not apply it to the next flight, will do NOTHING — except sell me an extremely more expensive ticket (as it’s a “same day” type situation). The 24 hr “customer service” numbers (thank you Dan) all route to India, where you get to explain everything twice (bad internet-IP telephone connections with India), and they will do NOTHING for you, only say “That is not possible.” I would NEVER suggest traveling on WOW — UNLESS, unless: (1) Your goal is cheap flight from/to US/Europe (maybe w/ stopover in Iceland) *AND* (2) You have at least 24 hours leeway for any onward connection (WOW is late and it’s your problem if you thought to use them and connect to another airline) and (3) You basically have no baggage, just a regular backpack (like for books) that you can stuff 4 days of clothes in. This is a HIGH RISK airline where YOU BARE the risk and … startlingly higher prices if WOW doesn’t do what they’re supposed to (ie: provide qualified and adequate staff and operate on time).

Hi Lindsey,

Thank you for taking the time to comment on this post. I’m glad you could utilize the customer service numbers, but I didn’t have any inkling where the call centre was physically. I did use their customer service once, and it was a same day flight change (I wanted to stay am extra day in Iceland), and they answered right away, updated my flight to the next day, and charged me an extra $100. Not too shabby for me at the time. Sorry to hear about your problems, but if you’ve only flown once, I’d recommend giving them the benefit of the doubt and giving Wow Air another go at it. I’ve flown them many times, and I’ve packed light, and had good experiences.

The service you received does sound terrible. In situations like this, it’s disappointing that airlines won’t step up their game and make this situation right for you.

Unfortunately, WOW was just bought out by its main Icelandic competitor, Iceland Air, which likely means a full WOW Air shut down in the near future. It’s really unfortunate for North American travellers who have limited budget flight options as is.

Best of luck.

Hi: I will be flying on WOW Air from London Gatwick via Iceland to Baltimore/Washington BWI in March. Although I have done many transatlantic trips over the past 30+ yrs, I have never used WOW before, and did so because the cost is low. I booked a carry-on bag with my ticket, but no checked bag. I also booked specific (basic window) seats for each leg of my trip between LGW/BWI. I have a few specific questions: 1. Does the WOW air basic seat have a coat hook on it? By that I mean a hook where I can hang a sports jacket? I have seen this on many airlines, like BA or Iberia, but not sure about low cost carriers like WOW. I am asking because I plan to wear a jacket while travelling as I wont have space in my carry-on luggage to pack it. I suppose I can store the jacket in the overheard bins but I would prefer to hang it if possible. 2. Is there a power outlet or USB port for each passenger seat? 3. How (un)comfortable are the basic seats on the A321s? The longest flight I will be on will take approx 6 hrs (Iceland to BWI). 4. As an experienced WOW user, do you have any recommendations re: the food service on board WOW? I have used EasyJet, Norwegian and Ryanair in the EU and it seems WOW food prices are quite similar.

Hi Lawrence.

Good questions. I’ve never seen a coat hook on a WOW Air flight, but I haven’t worn a sport jacket or suit jacket on a Wow Air flight where it was warranted, so I end up shoving my jacket underneath the seat.

My Wow Air flights never had an accessible power outlet, nor is there any inflight entertainment system which could provide a USB port, unfortunately. It’s possible some of their planes have accessible power outlets, but I’ve never seen it.

The seats are some of the most uncomfortable seats you’ll find, but not significantly different than let’s say Ryan Air or Transavia. I’ve upgraded to better seats a few times, and it was well worth the $100 or so I paid. If you need a certain level of rest, I’d upgrade – especially if you anticipate a full flight.

Food service is ok, and prices are competitive with what you’d see on any airline – so that means expensive and of average quality. You can get a few Icelandic specials such as Skyr yogurt or Icelandic chocolate. Think 9 to 11 euros for a sandwich, small pizza, or butter chicken. Here is a sample of the US menu here: https://wowair.us/travel-info/duty-free/ (Check page 48).

Best of luck on your flight. Your questions are good, and I’ll be updating my article in the future to incorporate more details as related to your questions.

Hi I am flying with Wow with my family in Aug. We have picked our seats, but am wondering if they board and un-board from the front AND the back of the plane? We have seats selected in the middle of the plane but if they de-board from the back, then I would pick seats closer to the back door so we can get off faster. thanks!

Hi Joanna, for the Wow flights I’ve been on, boarding and disembarking was always done from the front of the plane. Good luck with your flight. There has been some news recently about Wow Air having some of their planes repossessed and grounding some flights. It really doesn’t look like a good situation for the future of the airline at the moment, but I am hoping they pull through it. Best of luck to you, and I hope you have a great adventure.

They just ceased operations today! Damn. Hopefully I can recover the cost from my credit card!

Yes, it’s really terrible news for North American travellers as we have very limited low cost flights available – especially international! Best of luck in getting the cost recovered from your credit card. Also, I’d also recommend double checking your travel insurance as well. -Dan

Everything to Know Before Booking with Wow Air

Everything You Need to Know Before Booking with Wow Air

Update: Wow Air went out of business in March 2019.

Ryan and i recently got incredibly cheap flights from chicago to amsterdam with wow air – they were only $200 round trip for each of us and we didn’t use any credit card points or airline miles to get them at that price..

The trick to getting those cheap flights was simply being subscribed to the Wow Air  email newsletter .

Wow Air was running a flash sale where all of their flights were 50% off for about 48 hours. All we had to do was apply their promotion code to their already very cheap ($400 round-trip) flights.

Full Refund Within 24 Hours

Ryan and I both work from home, so our schedule is flexible and we were able to make the decision to go pretty quickly. However, when we booked the flights we still weren’t 100% positive we were going. That’s where this bit of knowledge comes super in handy:  US airlines are required by law to allow buyers to cancel flights for a full refund within 24 hours of booking . (Do look into the conditions for any particular airline’s refund policy before booking. Here’s Wow’s 24-hour cancelation policy .) Knowing we had 24 hours to cancel allowed Ryan and I to book the flights first while the sale price was still available, then fully commit to going in the day following.

What’s Included (and Not Included) in Wow Air’s Ticket Price

Wow Air is a budget airline. This means that while their prices are low, there aren’t a whole lot of perks included in the ticket price. They’ll charge you a lot for extras if you aren’t prepared. Ryan and I flew with Wow Air from Chicago to Amsterdam without paying them extra for a single thing beyond the ticket price! You just need to know what to expect.

You can choose to pay different fares for your ticket, depending on what you want to be included. On their site you can read about Wow Fares , including basic, plus, comfy, or biz, to find out what each fare includes.

We are budget travelers and have only bought Wow Air’s basic fare, since it is the least expensive option. My description in the rest of this article will be outlining what is included in Wow’s basic fare.

Baggage Policy

Personal item.

At the time of writing this, according to Wow Air’s site, included in Wow’s ticket prices is one personal item. They call personal items a “small bag/backpack, laptop, or camera bag.” The maximum dimensions for this personal item are 42x32x25cm or 17x13x10in, including handles and wheels. Their weight limit is 10kg or 22lb. Whatever type of bag it is, it must fit underneath the seat in front of you.

You might be wondering, like we were, how strict is Wow Air on personal item restrictions?  In our experience, not very strict.

They asked Ryan to see his bag but didn’t even look at mine as far as I could tell (and mine was bigger). Neither of our bags were measured. Also, neither of us have seen them weigh personal items, and I really don’t think weight is something to be concerned about.

For our two week trip, Ryan and I  only brought personal items so that we wouldn’t have to pay to bring a carry-on or checked bag.

That sounds crazy to a lot of people, but it’s really doable if you are intentional about it. I may do a post in the future on how to pack for a trip in just a medium sized backpack, but I will tell you that having this $20 Coreal Backpack from Amazon to pack in made it a lot easier for me this time around! Here’s an image:

wow travel online booking

This backpack is extremely lightweight, yet durable. The thing I love most about it is that it has a lot of convenient pockets! I could put my water bottle in one side pocket, my snacks in the front pocket, and my inflatable travel pillow in the other side pocket. Then it has a flap on top with an exterior zipper compartment and an interior zipper compartment. These are really handy for things I need to have easy access to, like my wallet, earbuds, and phone.

The only complaint I have about the backpack is that because it’s made to be so lightweight, its straps don’t have much padding. I had my backpack absolutely stuffed and quite heavy, so it did make my shoulders sore after a while.

Carry-On and Checked Bags

At the time of writing this, according to Wow Air’s site, carry-on bags can be a maximum of 56x45x25cm or 22x18x10in in dimensions, including handles and wheels. A carry-on is also not supposed to weigh more than 12 kg or 26 lbs. However, when I brought a carry on traveling from LA to Amsterdam, they did not weigh carry-on bags. The cost to bring a carry-on is least expensive if you pay for it when you book your flight. I think on flights from the US to Europe it usually costs $40-60 one way to bring a carry-on. The price may differ, however, depending on your flight origin and destination. You can check carry-on expenses on their site .

Since I have no experience with checking bags on Wow Air flights, I’ll direct you to their website for information on size restrictions and policies for checked baggage .

Food and Drinks

You will not get free pretzels or peanuts on Wow Air flights. You won’t even get a free cup of water. No food or drinks are free on Wow Air flights. Remember, it’s a budget airline and your ticket will be cheap because you’re not paying for these extras.

Ryan and I usually pack snacks, drink a lot of water in the airport, and refill our water bottles right before boarding. This way we don’t have to purchase any food or drinks on the plane, which can be pricey. You can check out Wow Air’s on board service menus on their website .

Seats, Entertainment, and Comfort In-Flight

At the time of writing this, unless you pay for a more expensive fare, you will not be able to choose your seat without paying for it. The standard seats on Wow’s aircraft are not overly cramped. I would say they are average. You can pay extra for “extra legroom seats” or “BigSeats” if you want to.

The seats do not recline very much at all. They only go back a couple of inches. This can make sleeping on the flight more difficult, especially if you don’t have a window seat.

There is no in-flight entertainment. There are no screens, and there is no in-flight wifi, even if you are willing to pay for it.

Again, Wow Air is a budget airline, and you’re getting what you pay for.

Where Wow Air Flies

The us cities wow air currently flies out of are:.

  • Cincinnati (beginning May, 2018)
  • Cleveland (beginning May, 2018)
  • Dallas (beginning May, 2018)
  • Detroit (beginning April, 2018)
  • Los Angeles
  • San Francisco
  • St. Louis (beginning May, 2018)
  • Washington DC

Wow currently flies to over 20 cities in Europe, as well as some cities in Canada, and to Tel Aviv, Israel. Wow seems to be growing rapidly and is adding cities to their list of airports they fly to very often! For specifics, view the full list of airports Wow flies to .

Optional Stopover in Iceland

As an Icelandic airline, flights between North America and Europe have layovers in Reykjavik Iceland’s airport, Keflavik. When you book your flights, you can choose between three options: round trip, one way, or stopover.

Stopover flights are where you get to basically extend your layover in Iceland to any number of days that you’d like!

It’s good to know, however, that unfortunately their promotional deals like the 50% off promo we used are often not applicable to stopover flights.

Overall, do we recommend Wow Air?

That depends on your travel style. If you’re like us, and you are willing to forgo comforts and conveniences for the sake of taking a trip that you can afford, YES we recommend Wow Air! We’ve both taken two trips we most likely would not have booked if it hadn’t been for Wow Air’s low prices.

If you prefer to spend more money to travel comfortably, Wow Air still might work for you! With their different tiers of fare options, you may be able to find one that’s right for you. I just wouldn’t recommend going with the basic fare if you’re used to comfort and fine dining on board.

What are WOW air’s check-in options?

Online check-in Priority boarding Flying with children Seating for infants and children Unaccompanied children Flying while pregnant Group bookings Disabled access and medical equipment Pets and service animals

Online check-in

Online check-in is available for all WOW air destinations from 24 hours and up to one hour before the flight’s scheduled departure. Online check-in is not available for bookings of more than 9 guests. You can change your flight, edit passenger names or choose a seat assignment up until you complete your web check-in. Once checked in, you can still add any baggage and special equipment you may have, but only through the WCI-portal at the same online price and not through WOW air’s My booking/Manage booking section.

You can print your boarding pass or receive it as an email to download the Wallet app (iPhone) or PassWallet (Android/Windows). You can then either show your boarding pass at security either as a printed copy or on your tablet or smartphone.

Priority boarding

Guests who book the WOW biz option with their ticket can receive priority boarding along with ticket cancellation protection, seating reservation and other extra benefits. More information about the various WOW fares and their associated options can be found here. Before you head to the departure lounge, check our guide to 10 Things to Do Before Your Flight .

Flying with children

If you are planning to fly with your children, there are a few points to note. Infants have a limited baggage allowance of one small bag or item, with a maximum dimension of:

  • 16.5 x 12.5 x 9.8 inches, including handles and wheels.

Strollers may be carried free of charge. Charges apply for any baggage or special equipment you plan to carry that exceeds the one free item allowance. For more information, check out our guide to flying with children .

Seating for infants and children

Either a stroller or a car seat is included free as part of WOW air’s child ticket. If you would like to bring both, you will have to pay for the extra one according to the airline’s list of fees and charges. A current list of fees is accessible here .

Unaccompanied children

WOW air offers a chaperone service for children flying alone. This service is not available on WOW air connecting flights (VIA), and children under the age of 5 are not permitted to travel alone or as unaccompanied minors on any WOW air flights. For direct flights, children aged between 5 and 11 can travel without a parent or a legal guardian. You will need to firstly register your child for the service at the time of booking and fill out a special form at the airport. A copy of the form must be kept safe by the child always. The fee for the service is $89.99 per guest and per flight. Please note the charge is not refunded even if the service is not used.

Children between the ages of 12 and 17 years of age may travel unaccompanied and do not require any special provisions, although you can book the chaperone service if you wish. The cost will be the same as for children aged 5 to 11 years and includes a pre-selected seat reservation. The chaperone service works as follows:

Once you have filled out the form and proven that you are the child’s guardian, a WOW air representative will accompany the child onto the aircraft. You will need to remain at the departure airport until the plane has taken off. The WOW air cabin crew will transfer the child to an airport employee upon arrival. The child will then be accompanied to the arrivals hall, where the airport employee will help the child collect luggage and clear customs. The child will be released to the person stated on the form, and that person must prove their identification with some official ID (such as passport or driving license).

We have a helpful guide for kids flying solo .

Flying while pregnant

Pregnant women may fly without any special medical documentation until the end of week 27 of their pregnancy. Between week 28 and week 35, they will need to present medical certification at check-in, which shows the estimated date of birth and confirms the expectant mother may travel on specified dates with WOW air. The certificate must be issued within 72 hours prior to the commencement of travel and cannot be older than 3 days. Flying after week 36 is not permitted.

Check out Cheapflights.com’s guide to flying while pregnant .

Group bookings

WOW air can create group offers for 12 or more guests. Please note that an infant is not included in this number. To apply for a group booking, click here . You will need to include your destination, travel dates and specify how many guests will be traveling as part of your group. The airline’s group department will then follow up with an offer that will be created upon approval. From that point on, the representative for the group department will be your direct contact. Online check-in for groups is not possible.

Disabled access & medical equipment

You can select to have wheelchair assistance at the time of your booking by choosing ‘Wheelchair Assistance’ in step 2 of the online booking process. Once you have completed your booking, you will need to send the airline staff an email at [email protected] to confirm your request for wheelchair assistance. You are required to give at least 48 hours’ notification prior to departure regarding your request for wheelchair assistance. The airline uses a code system to enable you to specify which kind of assistance you need:

  • WCHS – Wheelchair (steps) : Select this option if you are unable to ascend or descend steps but can move to and from the aircraft door to your seat on-board the aircraft. Here wheelchair assistance is provided through the terminal to and from the aircraft door and up/down the aircraft steps.
  • WCHR – Wheelchair (ramp) : Select this option if you are unable to ascend/descend steps and can move to/from the aircraft to your seat on-board but may have difficulty walking long distances.
  • WCHC – Wheelchair (seat) : This form of assistance if for passengers who require a wheelchair through the terminal and to/from your seat on the aircraft. A companion may be necessary in this case.

You may also bring your own wheelchair, which is included as part of your checked-in baggage allowance, at no extra charge. You will need to check it in. At this point, you will be provided with another chair and escorted through the airport. More information is available at WOW’s Special Needs section .

Here are our guides to flying with disabilities and flying with medication .

Pets & service animals

Pets are not permitted on any WOW air flights except for specially trained dogs to help blind, deaf and otherwise disabled guests. No special charges, weight restrictions or cage requirements apply in this case. Please note the following:

  • The service dog may not occupy a seat or the walkway.
  • If possible, please use a muzzle and/or leash for your service dog when boarding the aircraft.
  • WOW air does not accept liability if a service dog is denied entry to the destination country. It is your responsibility to ensure that your service animal can enter the EU. Further about this can be found here .
  • If you plan to travel with your service dog, you will need to book them in at least 48 hours prior to departure via the airline’s Customer Service Center.

Young U.S. Travelers Ditch Online Travel Agents for Bank Booking Sites: Skift Research

Sean O'Neill , Skift

April 1st, 2024 at 1:20 PM EDT

Young Americans are shunning online travel giants like Expedia and Booking.com in favor of credit card travel portals, such as Chase Travel and Capital One Travel, a Skift Research survey found.

Sean O'Neill

Would you book your next vacation through the reservation platform of your bank credit card, such as Chase Travel or Capital One? Would you turn instead to online travel agencies like Expedia and Booking.com? Or would you book directly with airlines and hotels?

If you’re an American under 35, the likely answer is that you favor your bank credit card’s travel portal, according to Skift Research .

A Skift Research survey found that roughly a third of U.S. Gen-Zs and Millennials book airline and hotel reservations through credit card platforms, while only a quarter use online travel agencies.

This behavior is the opposite for older travelers, who are much likelier to use online travel agencies than credit card portals.

wow travel online booking

A Rising Generation Opts for Next-Gen Travel Players

Skift Research surveyed 1,001 U.S. travel credit card holders who had taken at least one long-distance, overnight trip in late 2023. The survey was fielded online by a trusted third-party consumer panel provider.

The survey found that between 32% and 36% of travelers between the ages of 18 and 34 booked trips through credit card reservation portals, using their credit cards to either pay or redeem rewards. Between 24% and 25% booked trips through online travel agencies.

The preference for credit card portals was reversed for older travelers. People over the age of 55 booked through online travel agencies about 27% of the time, but they used credit card platforms only about 11% to 12% of the time.

Between 40% and 60% of travelers of all ages said they booked directly.

wow travel online booking

Online Travel Companies Still Benefit

The bank-led programs have grown quickly. JPMorgan Chase & Co. began pushing its Chase Travel portal to its U.S. customers in earnest in 2022. Last year, Chase Travel processed roughly $10 billion in transactions , making it roughly comparable in volume to established players like American Express Travel. Capital One Travel has similarly grown by leaps and bounds since its 2021 relaunch .

However the credit card travel booking portals source most of their inventory through business-to-business contracts with online travel giants. So companies like Expedia, Booking Holdings, and Hopper still make commissions by providing white-labeled plane tickets and hotel reservations to these banking partners.

It could be a perilous game for online travel giants to let upstart banking players create customer loyalty and habits among young travelers. Agencies’ commissions from powering the bank portals behind the scenes are typically less — and often 50% less — than when customers book at agencies themselves.

If a generational shift in booking patterns holds long-term, it could eventually undermine the margins of online travel companies.

Chase Travel Exec On How In-House Agency and Tech Provide an Edge

Chase Travel Exec On How In-House Agency and Tech Provide an Edge

Chase Travel and American Express Travel are among the top handful of leisure travel sellers in the U.S. That’s mostly good news for online travel agency partners, as well.

Frequently asked questions, are we insured during the excursion.

Your safety and protection during the excursion are our top priorities. Firstly, your travel insurance is valid throughout Egypt, and it also covers our excursions when booked with our tour guides. Secondly, we carry full insurance liability for passengers on all types of transportation, including transfers and yachts. We obtain necessary permits and adhere to strict tourism regulations in Egypt for conducting our tour activities.

Therefore, you will have complete insurance coverage and assurance of safety during our excursions.

Do I need to wait or adjust to the excursion schedule?

After booking the excursion, we will inform you of the exact time when you will be picked up from your hotel. Due to a high volume of bookings, most excursions are organized daily or according to the schedule indicated in the description of each program. You may join a group of tourists from your hotel who have purchased the same excursion from their hotel guide.

The difference is that our prices are lower by 40% - 60%.

How can I retrieve a forgotten item after the excursion?

It is important to understand that if you have forgotten or lost something during the excursion, retrieving the item can be challenging. We always remind our tourists about the importance of not forgetting their belongings and checking them before disembarking from the bus or yacht at the end of the excursion. Unfortunately, once the transportation undergoes cleaning, it becomes difficult to recover lost items. We strive to assist our tourists in locating their belongings, but we cannot guarantee full retrieval.

Therefore, please be attentive and take care of your belongings during the excursion.

Can a low price indicate poor service quality?

Our company offers some of the lowest prices on the market, but that does not mean we provide poor service. We operate as an online excursion booking platform for major organizers in Egypt and can offer competitive prices due to the high volume of tourists we serve.

By purchasing our services, you receive quality service without overpaying intermediaries.

How can I make payment for the excursion?

We offer flexible payment options. You can pay for the excursion upon boarding the transfer in either cash (US dollars or Russian rubles) or by transferring funds to our Sberbank card in Russia. It's important to note that prepayment is only required for certain individual excursions where advance purchase of plane tickets or document processing is necessary. Most of the group programs can be paid during the transfer.

Our goal is to make the payment process as convenient as possible for you.

What type of transportation is used for transfers?

Depending on the number of people and the type of excursion, transfers are conducted using cars, minibusses, and large comfortable buses equipped with air conditioning. Buses with onboard toilets are used for longer group excursions. All vehicles undergo regular technical and sanitary maintenance.

Prior to each trip, the necessary permits are obtained from the police, and drivers undergo inspections.

Are you operating under a tourism license?

Egypt is a country with a well-established legal system, especially in the tourism sector. To go on a tour by car or yacht, it is necessary to obtain permission from the police and the military. Permissions are granted only to licensed tourism companies. That is why for some excursions, we may request voucher information and passport photos. However, for most excursions, permissions are obtained based on the number of participants, and passport details are not required.

In other words, we operate under a tourism license.

How can I obtain photos from the photographer who was on the tour?

The individuals who engage in photography and videography during tours are employees of separate companies that are not affiliated with the organizer. Different companies may have different photographers and different reviews from our tourists. All arrangements with photographers are within your responsibility zone.

If you do not plan to purchase photos or simply do not enjoy being photographed, we recommend informing the photographer about this at the beginning of the tour.
