Flavors as Diverse as its Landscapes

Flavors as Diverse as its Landscapes

Dutch, French, Indian and Malaysian meld to create the Afrikaans-style of cooking. Braai or shisa nyama, which means ‘burn the meat,’ is like western BBQ. For a meaty snack, try Biltong. Served in a brown bag, these spiced strips are akin to jerky. Wondering about Slap Chips? Try these vinegar-doused fries alone or in a Gatsby sandwich. Seafood lovers can rejoice too at Mossel Bay, whose name means bay of mussels. Need a ‘dop’ or drink? A favorite is Amarula, a cream liqueur made from the fruit of the Marula tree. Elephants get drunk eating its fermented fruit.

This Norwegian Cruise sailing takes you on a bucket list adventure: What it's like aboard

cruise african safari

For Kylie Herd, an Australian passenger on Norwegian Dawn’s Feb. 25 southern Africa itinerary, cruising has been the best way to check places off her bucket list.

“I just go with whatever cruise line has the itinerary that I want to do at the time that I’m available. It tends to be Norwegian, and when I saw that Norwegian had all these African cruises, I just thought, ‘I’m going to spend summer in Africa,’ because it’s an amazing itinerary,” she told USA TODAY.

When it comes to cruising, most Americans probably think of bopping around the Caribbean or checking out the wilds of Alaska if they’re feeling especially adventurous, but that’s really just scratching the surface. Cruise lines are increasingly offering diverse itineraries including expedition cruises to remote parts of the globe and introductory sailings to help travelers explore countries and regions they might never visit otherwise.

Madagascar was the real draw for months of consecutive cruises on the Dawn for Herd.

“I’ve been trying to go to Madagascar for years. I always wanted to go there way before the movies ever came out. It’s one of those places that’s really difficult to get to,” she said. “When I saw Madagascar on a cruise itinerary I was like, ‘I have to do it.’ ”

Although the Feb. 25 sailing had to skip Madagascar for logistical reasons after a delay departing Mauritius, Herd said that she was able to visit the country earlier on her trip and that it was a real highlight.

Norwegian’s Africa itineraries had various changes and missed ports throughout the season. Passenger contracts give cruise lines some leeway to alter itineraries on short notice for reasons including weather or conditions on the ground that prevent ships from reaching or being accommodated safely in a scheduled port. Such changes can be especially common in regions prone to political unrest or that lack sophisticated port facilities.

Even so, Herd said she understood why passengers who missed out would be frustrated, but she encouraged her fellow travelers to keep an eye on the positive. “I understand the disappointment. I was disappointed, too, but we’re still having a great time.”

The Feb. 25 cruise still stopped at Reunion, a French island in the Indian Ocean, which has an active volcano, as well as ports in South Africa where travelers could spot local wildlife.

Safari from a cruise

Norwegian Dawn stopped at four ports in South Africa, three of which offered safari experiences as shore excursions.

▶ From Richard’s Bay, passengers could visit the iSimangasilo Wetland Park , home to elephants, rhinoceroses, hippopotamuses, zebras and other classic African big game. The park is about an hour and a half drive from the port, and Norwegian’s shore excursion included two game drives, snorkeling and a traditional South African braai, or barbecue.

Just as cruise itineraries can sometimes be subject to last-minute changes, safaris are at the whim of wild animals. Sightings are not guaranteed, but patience and vigilance are often rewarded.

▶ In Gqeberha (formerly Port Elizabeth), Norwegian Dawn’s passengers could visit Addo Elephant National Park, also about an hour and a half drive from the port.

As the name suggests, Addo is home to a huge and docile population of more than 600 elephants. These animals often congregate around watering holes accessible from well-worn safari tracks.

Even after a strong rainfall the night before the excursion, which allowed elephants to retreat into the bush and temporarily lessen their reliance on overtaxed wells, dozens of the creatures greeted visitors coming from the ship for two-hour game drives.

▶ In Mossel Bay, passengers could also access private game reserves, which often have a higher concentration of wildlife roaming free but can include animals that are not directly indigenous to the area.

Cape Town and the winelands

There’s more to Africa than safaris, and Cape Town is an especially good place to experience metropolitan life and other kinds of outdoor activities on the continent.

South Africa’s legislative capital offers excellent hiking, a great foodie culture, beautiful (if slightly chilly) Atlantic beaches, penguins and more.

For travelers willing to explore beyond the city, South Africa’s wine country is close at hand in Stellenbosch and Franschhoek, and many vineyards offer tastings and meal experiences. One Norwegian excursion took passengers to the Blaauwklippen wine estate in Stellenbosch, which is best known for its Zinfandel.

Is an Africa cruise worth it?

From a financial standpoint, a cruise around Africa can be an excellent way to explore. For American travelers, however, flights to and from the ship are often more expensive than the cruise itself.

For example, a 13-day Norwegian itinerary that begins in Cape Town on Dec. 7 and ends in Mauritius on Dec. 20 has prices that start at $899 per person for an inside stateroom, but flights can be well over $1,000 round trip. The current cheapest itinerary from Detroit, for example, is a 42-hour slog on multiple airlines via Montreal and Dubai to Cape Town. The return trip is a bit shorter, at 31 hours, also via Dubai and Montreal. That routing would cost $1,694 per person in economy as of March 18, according to Google Flights.

Logistically speaking, though, it can be much easier to book a cruise and rely on the line’s shore excursions to expand one's horizons than to coordinate one's own safari.

“With multiple diverse ports of call within one coastal continental area, our Africa voyages provide our guests the opportunity to explore lush rainforests or volcanoes, experience captivating wildlife tours, learn about the rich culture on the South African coastline, indulge in Cape Town’s incredible wine regions, and so much more,” Brian Gilroy, vice president of revenue management and itinerary planning for Norwegian Cruise Line, said in a statement to USA TODAY.

The one thing to keep in mind is that the African cruise market is less mature than the Caribbean – at many ports, there just aren’t comparable facilities to handle big ships. That doesn’t mean the cruises can’t or don’t happen, just that sometimes the operation is a little less fluid than the well-oiled Miami machine.

“Our 11- and 12-day cruises start and end in either Cape Town, South Africa, or Port Louis, Mauritius, and include an overnight stay in one of those magnificent cities, giving our guests the chance to fully explore what these regions offer. The variety of adventures our guests can experience in these destinations are endless, which makes for a truly unforgettable cruise experience," Gilroy said.

Travelers may be more likely to encounter a hiccup on their Africa cruise, but that’s all part of traveling to a new and exciting place. A missed port or an extra sea day can be a great time time to take stock, focus on the highlights, enjoy the experience of unlocking a new destination, and maybe take another sip of the wine your onboard sommelier recommended.

Just take a page out of Herd the Australian’s book. Despite some schedule changes, she said, “I’ve loved every single thing.”

The reporter on this story received access to this sailing from Norwegian. USA TODAY maintains editorial control of content.

Luxury Cruises to Africa

On a luxury Africa cruise, you will gain a unique perspective of this fascinating, multicultural region, whether you’re browsing the markets of Morocco or exploring the antiquities in the Egyptian port of Alexandria.

Celebrity’s itineraries take you to Casablanca, lying on Morocco’s sun-drenched Atlantic coast, Tangiers, gazing across the Straits of Gibraltar to Spain, and Alexandria, Egypt’s historic Mediterranean port. Each is different and every visit helps you to unpeel the layers of history that have shaped this region.

Africa Cruise Highlights

Ancient history.

From the iconic ancient library of Egypt’s Alexandria to the breathtaking and bold structure of the Hassan II mosque in Casablanca, there’s history at every turn. The Mediterranean is considered the cradle of civilization and a cruise is the ideal opportunity to learn about the different cultures that have passed through the region over the millennia. Sip tea in the squares of Tangier, and follow in the footsteps of 19th-century poets and artists. Visit 2,000-year-old holy sites, or shop in a 500-year-old souk for hand-made souvenirs.

Fun in the Sun and Sand

North Africa is rich in natural beauty, from green mountain ranges to leafy oases and the rolling dunes of the desert. Celebrity’s African ports have access to coastal and water activities, desert tours, hiking trails, and urban adventures that blend nature into human achievement and civilization. Make sure to check out a camel tour on the fringes of the Sahara, or explore the beach clubs on the golden sands around Casablanca.

Art and Artisan Gift Shopping

Cruises to North Africa offer an abundance of incredible shopping experiences. Visit labyrinthine bazaars in Egypt for cotton and clothing, or a Moroccan souk for hand-woven rugs and kilims. You can also shop for hand-carved olivewood and jewelry, dates and spices, and leatherware. Even if you prefer to window shop, the colors, scents and sounds of Africa’s markets and bazaars are irresistible.

Africa Cruise Ports

Casablanca, morocco.

The bustling, vibrant city of Casablanca is a feast for the senses, and one of the busiest ports along this coastline. This city boasts the European charm with Moroccan tradition, and is the country’s commercial center and largest population center. Visit the iconic Hassan II mosque as you stroll the scenic Boulevard de la Corniche along the sea. Sip traditional mint tea in the picturesque medina squares. Finish your day shopping for ornate wood carvings, hand-made leather bags, and decorative tea sets at the Exposition Nationale d’Artisanat emporium.

Alexandria, Egypt

The city of Alexandria is brimming with ancient history, museums, mosques, and modern amenities for travelers looking for an adventure. It’s also a gateway to Cairo and the great pyramids of Giza as an overnight trip.

Make sure to visit the famous Bibliotheca Alexandrina, which commemorates the ancient Great Library of Alexandria, and houses over eight million books. Dine on some of the best of Egyptian seafood, sip on local tea, or sample sheesha (traditional flavored tobacco) in the culturally rich area of Anfushi, just west of the Citadel of Qaitbay. Be sure to make a quick visit to the Ras el-Tin palace, a former Sultanic summer home that’s visually stunning from an architectural perspective.

Tangier, Morocco

As a mid-20th century hub for European and American artists, writers, and expats, Tangier developed a reputation as a cultural center for North Africa. Today, it remains an important cultural heritage city and is a popular stop on Africa cruises. While in Tangier, don’t miss the Kasbah Museum, which showcases many of Morocco’s most treasured artifacts from the Roman and Islamic dynasty periods. For a fascinating day trip, head to Asilah, where you can shop and walk through the fortified Portuguese-built old town before heading back to your ship.

Africa Cruise Itineraries

Typical itineraries for African cruises include 10- to 12-night trips that span either the western Mediterranean or the eastern Mediterranean. These itineraries include additional calls in places such as Greece, Israel, Turkey, Spain, and the Canary Islands.

Africa is undoubtedly an exotic destination; in the past, cruisers were mostly limited to the luxury and expedition cruise lines like Cunard, Silversea and Hapag-Lloyd. These days, more mainstream lines including Norwegian Cruise Line, MSC Cruises, Costa and Holland America -- among others -- all sail to ports in Africa. For more: Top Africa Cruise Ships .

The best trip I’ve ever done. Such an incredible experience. Absolutely magical to see these animals in the wild. And the team are amazing. I felt very safe at all times.

Cape Town to the Serengeti: Deserts & Wilderness Tour

Cape Town to the Serengeti: Deserts & Wilderness

Enjoyed the trip, saw lots of different animals, history and culture. Spent a lot of the time driving but the variety of game drives and optional activities created a good balance. The 2 groups I was a part of were great people and good company. The meals however were poor, felt our guide didn't try his best, majority of meals were cheap and our meal allowances were equivalent to $2-3 when given to eat on our long drives. He definitely could of done better with options especially after several comments and suggestions from our group. I didn't feel the food we got was anywhere the price I paid for the trip. Breakfasts consisted of cornflakes, weetabix, fruit and occasional yoghurt which was hidden and rationed along with museli. There were some days closer to the end where we got eggs, sausage and pancakes. Some individuals didn't even eat much overall because there wasn't much selection. Lunches consisted of processed meat sandwiches, apples and bananas for the most part. Dinners were rice, pasta, some vegetables and bread. The meat options were fine and more catered to I found. Unfortunately I felt that our guide wasn't organized with activities either, left everything to the last minute. He became more involved and active on the 2nd half of our journey with the group, for the first half he was a little reserved. Our driver was amazing and very accommodating and friendly. I would definetely do another G trip but would like to have a more outgoing and accommodating guide.

We enjoyed the experience. The only negative place was the lodge in Hwange, totally substandard, we were supposed to be there 2 nights but moved out after the first night. Must mention Mark, Fines, Peace and the other 2 guides that went over and above their duties to satisfy our needs.

Overall this tour was amazing! There are some incredible game drives and fun places to say. A few of the excursions are a bit mediocre and the days on the bus can be very long. It was 100% worth it though. I had a once in a lifetime adventure and will never forget this trip.

12-day Delta, Chobe & Victoria Falls (Accommodated)

Great tour, well organised, very knowledgeable and friendly guide. 2 suggestions: - please add safari pass amount to overall tour fee and make payable upfront. It’s safer not to carry lots of cash. Also guide does not need all this cash as most fees can be paid by credit card. - tipping is expected on most activities. It’s often difficult to figure out the right amount even with the help of the guide. Suggest to make the guide tip on behalf of the group taking the money from the safari pass or ask everybody to pay a small amount upfront (e.g. USD 10) to the guide.

10 Days Uganda's Gorillas Encounter, Wildlife & Kigali City Tour ( Private tour)

Mukisa Safari Tour scheduled an amazing trip and Richard our contact was very quick with responses and helpful but our guide Veronica and our driver Sam were what made the trip all what we could hope it could be. Sam got us from place to place safely, had a good sense of humor, and gave us some tidbits along the way. He also introduced me to the chili oil there which was perfect to add to our food. Veronica was so knowledgable, caring, and you can tell loves her country and job. We met another couple at one of the lodges that said all companies are the same but we have to disagree. This company, the people , and the activities made it a trip of a lifetime. Starting off seeing rhinos the first day was just the beginning. Make sure you get to the top of Murchison Falls because that is breathtaking. The weather was hot but up there with the mist helped cool things off. By the end of day two the only thing we didn't see in the big five was the lion which was fine as you do the lion trekking in Queen Elizabeth's National Park. I would recommend everyone spend the extra money for the lion trekking as we went off the road and got to see things no one else got to see such as lion cubs and a leopard that used the car to get some shade. You go on two river boats but honestly the second one was so much better seeing animals. So many babies, and variety. The chimpanzee and gorilla trekking is why we went but the whole trip was truly noteworthy. The drives are long and bumpy but enjoy the people and the time to reflect. When we had a health issue everyone was helpful and responsive. Veronica was very communicative every step of the way and if things got changed or needed taken care of she was there explaining what and why. Out of all the companies out there I think you will be very happy with Mukisa.

Africa Cruises Highlights

If you want to make your Africa cruise even more special, there are some unforgettable events which you could coincide your voyage with:

Cape Town International Jazz Festival, April- jazz artists from all over the world come together for this annual event held in the centre of Cape Town.

As such a large continent, it's no surprise that Africa has different climates depending on the area you're in. However, from the dry heat of the desert to the humidity of the rainforests in Madagascar, you'll tend to find that temperatures stay high throughout the year. In general, the season for cruises to Africa tends to last from October to May, meaning it's the perfect time to escape the UK for some warm winter sun. If you're set on enjoying a safari during your time in Africa, the best time to travel is between December and February, or June to August if you are in South Africa.

With so much to see and do, you're truly spoilt for choice when it comes to embarking on an Africa cruise. However, there are some highlights which would top anyone's list of activities during their time here:

The ‘must do’ activity when in Africa is a safari and can only truly be experienced in this part of the world. Normally taken out in groups of 8 in a track jeep, you'll get up close and personal with unique wildlife including elephants, giraffes and zebras.

Part of the Table Mountain National Park, the highest part of Africa is home to a wide selection of flora and fauna. Wander around to your heart's content as your senses come alive with the surrounding aromas and awe-inspiring scenery.

Robben Island

An island full of history, this is where influential icons, such as Nelson Mandela, were imprisoned. Today it's full of museums where you can head out on guided tours led by ex-political prisoners.

Experience Africa on a Safari Cruise

Elissa Garay

The prospect of a safari from a cruise ship is intriguing and bewildering. However, luxe cruise line Silversea Cruises has offered South African–centric sailings that it unofficially dubs “safari cruises” for more than 20 years. On these itineraries, guests get the chance to explore the African wilds, setting out in search of the continent's exotic landscapes and legendary wildlife.

This roving sea-based safari offers a transforming, kaleidoscopic take on the African safari experience that would be difficult to replicate on land. Granted, while some of Africa's most famed safari camps (à la South Africa 's Kruger National Park or Tanzania 's Serengeti National Park ) are set too far inland to be feasibly accessed via any cruise itinerary, the safari cruises instead reward guests with access to lesser-visited but still impressive safari parks and reserves that are within day-trip proximity to coastal ports.

Guests hop aboard a hassle-free cruise in South Africa with logistics arranged in advance (including room and board, transport from port to port, and a roster of well-vetted shore excursions). As the ship skirts Africa's lengthy coastline, port days see safari-primed excursions arranged at local game reserves, which are typically situated within a two-hour motor coach transfer from the port. After a half or full day out on guided safari excursions, guests return to the ship to be pampered with Silversea signatures like butler service and gourmet cuisine paired with wine and cocktails.

Top Picks for You

The cruise itinerary.

Game Reserve

Silversea runs most of its safari cruises round-trip from Cape Town, South Africa , with a handful of itineraries that additionally run between Cape Town and Mombasa, Kenya .

After arriving in sophisticated Cape Town, guests spend the first night at the swanky 329-room Table Bay Hotel , set on the vibrant V&A (Victoria & Alfred) Waterfront . The extra day in town helps to recover from jet lag and alleviate any anxieties about arriving to the ship too late (due to any unforeseen flight delays).

While Cape Town isn't well situated to safari country itself, it’s still a great destination. To make the most of you time here, you'll need to ascend the iconic Table Mountain (via cable car or hike) for sweeping views over mountains, city, and sea; wander around the buzzing V&A Waterfront, lined with restaurants, bars, shops, and boat tours aplenty; and take a bite out of Cape Town's buzzing culinary scene at a hot spot like The Pot Luck Club , where star chef Luke Dale-Roberts delivers a perfect trifecta of delectable small plates, polished service, and trendy atmosphere.

The first stop, following a day at sea, is at Port Elizabeth , or PE, in South Africa's Eastern Cape province . While the city is pleasant enough in its own right, with busy beaches, historic Victorian architecture, and public artworks, the port's raison d'être on the cruise circuit is its proximity to the outstanding 445,000-acre Addo Elephant National Park , about a 45-minute drive from the port. An elephant sanctuary like no other, it's also a proper “Big 5” reserve offering the possibility of seeing lions, leopards, rhinoceroses, and buffalo, in addition to the 600 elephants who reside here.

Next up, following another day at sea, is a half-day port call in Maputo , which lacks safari excursions, but offers an interesting glimpse of an African capital on the rise. A city tour here reveals a uniquely African tapestry of fading Portuguese colonial architecture, fast-rising high-rises, lush vegetation, welcoming sidewalk cafés, colorful marketplaces, small museums, an old fort, a century-old train station, and even an “ Iron House ” designed by Gustave Eiffel (of Eiffel Tower fame).

Elephants

The following overnight stay is in Richards Bay , an industrial port town in South Africa's KwaZulu-Natal province (the heart of the Zulu nation). The port is within striking distance of two superlative game reserves: the tongue-twisting Hluhluwe-Imfolozi Park and iSimangaliso Wetland Park .

Hluhluwe-Imfolozi Park—one of South Africa's best game reserves—offers another chance to come face-to-face with the Big 5. The park is famed for its conservation efforts that have made it one of the best places to see rhinos in the world. You might see zebras, giraffes, antelope, elephants, and wonderfully exotic birds during a 4×4 drive through the scenic park filled with rivers and watering holes.

Back on the coast, the UNESCO-protected iSimangaliso Wetland Park reveals an entirely different side of the African wild, via a two-hour boat trip on Lake St. Lucia. Here, you might see groups of bathing hippos and lurking crocodiles, along with flamingoes and more than 500 types of birds that inhabit these wetlands.

The next stop is Durban , South Africa's second-largest city and busiest port. Cruise guests can opt for some urban exploration, Indian Ocean beach bumming, or a half-day excursion to a game drive at the nearby Tala Private Game Reserve. At Tala, 7,500 acres of grasslands and wetlands provide a home for rhinos, hippos, buffalos, giraffes, antelopes, and more than 300 species of birds.

East London is South Africa's only river port, where guest embark on a half-day 4×4 game drive to Inkwenkwezi Game Reserve, in search of rhino, giraffe, wildebeest, zebra, and birds (including ostriches).

After 10 days at sea, the ship returns to Cape Town.  Depending on the time of your outbound flight, you'll get some additional time there to explore. If you’re feeling adventurous, hire a driver to explore the city's incredibly scenic 30-mile-long Cape Peninsula , much of which is protected within Table Mountain National Park .

THE CRUISE SHIP

Suite

Silversea Cruises is known for its refined service and well-appointed ships, and while the 296-passenger Silver Cloud can certainly be counted as upscale, it's showing some signs of fray. This is in large part because the ship will be refitted as an expedition vessel in the summer of 2017, so no major refurbishments are being done ahead of that. Still, with spacious all-suite accommodations, butler service for every guest, and inclusive rates that factored in free-flowing wine and cocktails, it'd be tough to complain.

The Silver Cloud 's size is small enough to ensure that there are no lines to get on or off the ship or to dine, but isn't so small that it's lacking in onboard amenities. Public spaces include four dining venues, two dedicated bars (plus the pool bar), a small casino, show lounge, cigar bar, library, spa, fitness center, and saltwater pool flanked by two Jacuzzis.

The onboard entertainment lineup shuffles events like movie matinees, trivia, and hosted bridge, as well as live music from a quartet, pianist/singer, and “The Voices of Silversea,” a troupe of six entertainers who put on song-and-dance productions. They also have a standout guest lecturer program.

Guest cabins include the services of butler to perform tasks like making dinner reservations, shining your shoes, or stocking your mini-fridge. All suites have a sitting area with a sofa, table, and two chairs (for in-room dining), a vanity and desk, and walk-in closets; the majority of units come with private balconies, too. Tech trimmings include iPod alarm clocks, TVs with DVD players, and in-room Wi-Fi.

There are two formal nights at sea when guests dress to the nines in cocktail dresses and dark suits. Note that gentlemen are expected to wear jackets to dinner each evening.

Expect to share the experience with a group of well-traveled (and well-to-do) couples, mostly ages 55 and up, with a large mix of Americans and English onboard, and almost no kids (the ship doesn't offer much in the way of special accommodations for children).

Silversea

Silversea Cruises offers a selection of safari cruises each year, between December and February (summertime in South Africa); the 10- to 15-night itineraries sail round-trip from Cape Town, or between Cape Town and Mombasa (longer voyages might include additional stops in spots like Walvis Bay, Namibia , and Mossel Bay, South Africa ). Early-booking rates for 2017 voyages start at $4,005/person, including free Wi-Fi, alcoholic beverages, complimentary shuttles into town in port, and onboard gratuities. Special ultra-inclusive 2016 rates start from a substantially pricier $11,520/person, including all of the above, but lots of big-ticket extras like international flights; pre- or post-cruise, three-night, land-based safaris in South Africa's Kruger National Park ; ground transfers; and select shore excursions. silversea.com

It should be noted that the seasick-prone might want to think twice before booking a sailing in South Africa waters. While the rewards are great, the stormy seas surrounding the notorious Cape of Good Hope can mean rough swells that will have your stomach turning circles.

Africa Cruises: What to Know About the Growing Cruise Destination

W hen most Americans think of cruises, they probably think of island-hopping in the Caribbean or cruising by glaciers in Alaska from afar. That may be appealing for some people, but for others, the idea of being lazy on a ship of thousands of people for a week doesn’t sound like much of a vacation.

But what if instead of doing a major Caribbean cruise, you did something far more adventurous: a major African cruise with wildlife safaris every day?

Most major US cruise lines that offer cruises to Africa make stops around southern Africa, taking advantage of a huge selling point of countries like South Africa, Botswana, Mozambique, and Madagascar: safaris. Africa cruises tend to be longer than those sailing from Miami or Cozumel, but they can be far more exciting, offering the chance to go on a safari drive in Africa almost every day without the need to sleep in the bush, drive long distances, deal with logistics or planning, or even unpack more than once. You’ll visit some of the best countries in the world for safaris without the need to switch hotels or fly between remote destinations.

Here’s what to know about cruises to Africa with the major US cruise lines.

What cruise lines go to Africa?

  • Booking safaris and excursions
  • What to know about third-party excursions
  • Africa cruises vs. tropical cruises
  • How adventurous are Africa cruises?
  • Extra things to consider about cruises to Africa
  • Who will like a safari cruise?

It may be surprising to know that not that many of the major US cruise lines offer dedicated Africa cruises. If you’re keen on a “small ship” cruise or an adventure cruise with a company like Mantis Journeys or Swan Hellenic , you’ll find many more options. But they can be quite pricey, and won’t earn you any points if you’re a member of a major cruise reward program.

Fortunately, a few of the most popular big cruise lines are starting to offer cruises to Africa.

Norwegian Cruise Lines: I went with Norwegian and I’d absolutely do another one, despite some hiccups (more on that below). For the best mix of comfort and price, it’s hard to beat. In 2025, Norwegian has 13 different trips to Africa , leaving primarily from Cape Town, Qatar, and Mauritius. The various trips make stops in places like Seychelles, Mozambique, South Africa, Kenya, Réunion, Tanzania, Senegal, Gambia, Sao Tome and Principe, Madagascar, and more. Prices for 2025 cruises start around $1,900 per person with lots of included perks — but in the weeks before I left for my 12-day southern Africa cruise , I saw rates listed as low at $599 per person . You won’t beat that.

Silver Sea : Silver Sea has 17 Africa cruises in 2025, leaving mostly from Cape Town. It has slightly fewer safari-focused ports of call, but also makes stops in places like Namibia, Seychelles, and Madagascar. Cruises are much smaller than Norwegian’s at around 600-700 guests per cruise, and it tends to be much pricier: the cheapest 2025 Africa cruise is a 15-day round-trip from Cape Town, South Africa , starting at $8,500 per person.

MSC: MSC has a smaller amount of Africa cruises available, and only makes stops at six ports: three in South Africa, as well as Namibia, Mozambique, and Mauritius. The company has seven Africa cruises available in 2025 , the longest of which is only five nights. That makes an MSC cruise a good add-on to a longer trip through South Africa, rather than using it as your entire vacation. The least-expensive is $687 per person for a three-night sail .

Africa cruise excursions

african cruises - elephants in addo safari cruise

A herd of Elephants in Addo Elephant Park, South Africa, as seen via a 4×4 excursion from the Norwegian Dawn. Photo: Suzie Dundas

Without a doubt, the most popular type of shore excursion on an African cruise is the game drive. You’ll find game drives through national parks or private reserves offered at nearly every port of call on a cruise to Africa. That allows guests to go on a safari nearly every day of their cruise if they’d like, though there are a few things to keep in mind.

The excursions may be pricier than you’re used to on other cruises. On my Norwegian cruise, the cost for an activity including transportation from the ship, a two-hour game drive, and transportation back to the ship (no lunch, no other activities) ranged from $179 for the closer safari parks to more than $400 for all-day trips to further away safari parks that included lunch and drinks. That’s to be expected, considering the long bus rides to some of the parks and the fact that the fee includes park fees, gas/fuel, the services of a safari guide, and transportation to the parks/reserves.

My cruise on the Norwegian Dawn was inexpensive, so it made it easier to spend more money on the excursions. But you should plan to spend a higher percentage of your vacation funds on excursions, especially as some ports don’t offer a lot to do within walking distance.

Pro tip: popular excursions on Africa cruises often sell out. Book them in advance; you can always cancel if you change your mind later. Before booking, check out  Matador’s guide to shore excursions and how to figure out if they’re worth the cost .

Africa independent excursions

africa cruises - independent excursions and safaris

Third-party and local companies like “Safari for Six” can be good options for travelers who don’t care to book through the cruise line excursion desk. Photo: Suzie Dundas

You absolutely do not need to book excursions through your cruise company. Booking through local companies (or websites like Viator and GetYourGuide ) can be a lot cheaper and good alternatives if the excursion you want is sold out or not offered through your cruise company. They also put more money directly into the pockets of locals who may not otherwise see much economic gain from cruise traffic. But unlike cruises in Western destinations, you may not be able to just do an online search for “cruise excursions” and book something easily from your phone.

In much of Africa, booking via Facebook or WhatsApp is common, and legitimate companies may not even have websites. So you’ll need to be a bit of a savvy traveler to book them. The downside of booking excursions  not through your ship means the ship will leave without you if you’re late. But it’s very, very rare for companies to get cruisers back to their ships too late — it’s not good for business if online reviewers say “I missed my cruise.” Reputable companies will be happy to answer questions and communicate before you book via email or WhatsApp. Many tourist guides in Africa speak four or five languages, so be sure to ask if your tour will be English-speaking, or a mixed-language group.

You can also find guides through unofficial Facebook pages. Most cruises have an unofficial Facebook page. Just type in the name of your ship on Facebook, and you’ll probably find them. On these pages, it’s common for guides and guiding companies post ads for their services, and for other travelers to make recommendations of companies they’ve used.

I found the company we used in Richards Bay, South Africa (Shout out to Safari for Six ) via a comment on a Facebook page for the Norwegian Dawn ship, and we had a great time. For $170 per person, we got to do a two-hour boat safari, plus a four-hour game drive with lunch.

What’s different about Africa cruises vs. tropical cruises?

africa cruises - pool area

On many Africa cruises, the only pool or lounging time you’ll have is on the ship, as many ports of call are focused on adventures and wildlife, not beaches. Photo: Suzie Dundas

Aside from the obvious (you’ll be visiting cities in Africa, not tropical islands), there are a few things to prepare for if you’re thinking about looking more info Africa cruises.

  • Some ports of call and harbors in Africa are fairly new to welcoming big ships, so they may not have all the kinks worked out. Be flexible and patient, and don’t expect to have tourist-friendly restaurants and stores within walking distance at each port. It’s essential to do some light research to figure out what to expect at each port. For example, when my cruise stopped in Richards Bay, South Africa, people were shocked to learn that the port is also a coal shipping terminal, and that there’s not much to do within walking distance. Had they spent even five minutes researching the port, they could have figure that out and planned accordingly.
  • You may want to get some extra vaccinations and carry preventative medicine. It’s up to you. But depending on where you’re going, you may want to carry malaria pills, or get some basic vaccinations like DPT (diphtheria, pertussis, and tetanus), or a yellow fever vaccine if you’re traveling on the western coast of Africa. Even without vaccines, you’re still unlikely to catch any diseases, but som travelers may find that being vaccinated agains them gives them a little extra peace of mind. You can get most basic international vaccinations at local pharmacies like CVS and Rite-Aid. (In South Africa, most parks are malaria-free.)

How active are cruises to Africa?

africa cruises - cape of good hope

On my trip, a day tour of Cape Town included the opportunity for a quick and steep hike to a lighthouse near the top of the Cape of Good Hope. Photo: Suzie Dundas

On Africa cruises, you’ll likely still have excursion options like beach visits and snorkeling trips, but they’ll likely be fewer and far between. Most excursions won’t be quite as leisurely as those you’d find on Caribbean or South Pacific cruises, though they still cater to older and less-active audiences. But if you’re going on a cruise to relax and put your toes in the sand, you won’t find that at as many ports in Africa as you would in the tropics.

What you will, find, however, are bouncy Jeep rides across dirt roads to go in search of elephants, chances to visit small communities for traditional outdoor BBQs, opportunities to paddle small canoes through birdwatching reserves, and options for visiting botanical gardens or budding wine-tasting regions.Yes, if you want something very active, like a distance hike or rock climbing trip, you’ll probably need to book it on your own. But most cruises to Africa will have a few more soft adventure-type excursions at each port than you’d find with more beach-focused cruises.

For frequent active travelers, it may seem tame. But for people used to more traditional cruises, it’ll likely be a bit more active and adventurous than you’re used to.

The downsides of Africa cruises

safari cruises - SF to cape town

Depending on where you live, getting to the starting point for your cruise could add days of travel on either end. Photo: Google Maps

While safari cruises are pretty exciting, they have some downsides. The first is usually the cost and time to get to the starting point. Popular departure ports include Cape Town, South Africa; Dubai, UAE; and Doha, Qatar. None of these destinations are particularly close for travelers in the US, nor are they inexpensive to reach. So you’ll need to take travel time and cost into account when planning. Consider also that most cruises to Africa are on the long side (usually at least 10 days).

The second downside is one relevant to most cruises: you don’t get to spend much time in each destination. This can be a bit of a downside on game drives, since most animals tend to me more active at dawn and dusk, as opposed to the middle of the day. Since you’ll arrive around 7 or 8 AM every morning and need to be back on board by about 5 PM each day, your only options for game drives are in the middle of the day. You’ll still see animals, but just that your chances are a little lower of seeing more elusive species, like lions and leopards.

Who should consider an Africa cruise?

group of people on cruise chairs

Africa cruises can be ideal for mixed-generation trips, where some travelers want to take it easy but others want to spend their days on adventures. Photo: Virrage Images /Shutterstock

The honest answer here is that most everyone would enjoy an Africa cruise. But the more dialed in answer is that they’re well-suited to people who have always dreamed of going on safari vacations or seeing far-away villages and landscapes, but who aren’t comfortable navigating foreign countries on their own. Seeing Africa by cruise ship takes away much of the uncertainty and unknowns that can make some travelers hesitant to travel too far out of their comfort zones. It’s also a heck of a lot easier to plan a cruise than it is to put together an entire safari trip.

That makes Africa cruises an obvious choice for older travelers or travelers who are new to international travel. There was a running joke on my shjp that it was “Africa Lite:” a chance to get a taste of the continent, and travelers who wanted to see more could return for dedicated land-based trips after their cruises. I would feel much more comfortable having my retired parents experience a safari via a cruise ship, rather than sending them to navigate traveling through Johannesburg on their own.

The tour wraps up at Thonga Beach Lodge, where you can snorkel or scuba dive near coral reefs in the Indian Ocean. As far as safaris go, this one is an affordable option, starting at about $2,795 per person with all meals included as well as a rental car; for the cheapest price, you will need to drive yourself between the destinations, but it's possible to pay an additional fee for a driver to guide you instead.

Cuckoo Safaris

Explore the savanna and deserts of southwest Africa with Compass Odyssey's eight-day Namibia Wildlife Safari. You'll visit a community-based conservation area in Damaraland – known for its desert-adapted elephants, oryx, giraffes and other wildlife – while staying in the rustic-chic Doro Nawas Camp. You'll also spend two days in Etosha National Park, seeking wildlife at the park's bustling waterholes by day and embarking on an evening game drive as well. Starting at $3,750 per person, the tour includes most meals and all park entry fees, but not flights; the company does allow the tour to be customized on request.

Vaccination and visa requirements for African countries

Some popular safari destinations may require you to have received certain vaccinations in order to enter the country as a tourist. Inoculation requirements can include vaccination against COVID-19 and yellow fever, and you'll need to get these vaccines before departing on your trip. Be sure to bring proof of vaccinations with you. If you are transiting through another country en route to your safari tour, you must check that you also meet immunization requirements for the stopover location.

Note that, outside of what's required, there are a number of other vaccinations that are recommended, so ensure you're up to date and fully protected before you travel. In addition, many safari locations are prone to malaria; you should consult with your doctor to see if you need to bring anti-malaria medication on your trip.

Safari countries have varying visa requirements for travelers from the U.S. – these are detailed below. Depending on your itinerary, you may need a single- or multiple-entry visa, and some visas require you to apply in advance of traveling and/or have a certain number of blank pages in your passport. Regardless of your destination, your passport should be valid for at least six months before you leave for your trip.

Here are the vaccine and visa requirements for major safari destinations as of November 2022:

Botswana: If you have recently visited a country where yellow fever is common, you will need to be vaccinated against this illness. This does not include the U.S. but does include a number of countries in Africa, Central and South America. Consult the World Health Organization's website for a list of countries with risk of yellow fever transmission, including Kenya and Uganda.

U.S. citizens and nationals can stay in Botswana for 90 days without a visa.

Kenya: Travelers to Kenya must have been vaccinated against COVID-19 with the last shot administered more than 14 days before arrival in the country. Unvaccinated visitors can enter with a negative PCR test, conducted no more than 72 hours before departure. Proof of COVID-19 tests or vaccines must be uploaded to an online system called Panabios. Kenya is a country where you'll be at risk of yellow fever transmission; it also requires those traveling from other places with yellow fever or cholera outbreaks to be vaccinated against these illnesses. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends that you protect yourself against yellow fever before your trip here.

Americans need an e-visa to enter Kenya. You should apply online at the eVisa government website no more than eight weeks before your trip, as visas are not available upon arrival in Kenya. See more on the U.S. Department of State's website .

Namibia: Those traveling from a country where yellow fever is common need to be vaccinated against it. No visa is required as long as you're staying for 90 days or less.

Rwanda: If you're coming from a country where yellow fever is endemic, a yellow fever vaccination is required before departure.

U.S. citizens and nationals can be issued a 30-day visitor visa on arrival in Rwanda or through the Rwandan Embassy in Washington, D.C. A single-entry visa costs $50, and it's recommended you bring sufficient cash in U.S. dollars to pay for this (although credit card payment may be accepted at Kigali International Airport). Consult the State Department website for more information.

South Africa: A yellow fever vaccination is required if you're traveling from a country with a risk of transmission. No visa is required for stays of 90 days or less.

Tanzania: Travelers must be able to present proof of COVID-19 vaccination with a QR code to enter Tanzania. Unvaccinated travelers must take a PCR test no more than 72 hours before departure, and the test results should be accessible by QR code. Yellow fever vaccines are mandatory if you're traveling from a location where yellow fever is present – including if you spend more than 12 hours in transit in such a country.

Visas are required for tourism in Tanzania. You can apply for a single-entry, 90-day visa online for $50 – and be sure to print a copy of the approval to bring with you. The processing period takes up to 10 days. You can also obtain a visa on arrival for a $100 fee; it's recommended you bring cash to cover this. Find more Tanzanian visa information on the State Department website .

Uganda: To enter Uganda, you must either be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 or present a negative test taken no more than 72 hours before departure. Like Kenya, Uganda is a country with risk of yellow fever transmission. All visitors must show proof of vaccination against yellow fever to enter Uganda, regardless of where you're traveling from.

American visitors to Uganda must apply online for an electronic visa before departure; arriving in Uganda without completing this process could result in your detainment. Visit the State Department website to learn more.

Zambia: Visitors who are fully vaccinated against COVID-19 must show proof of vaccination but do not need a test to enter Zambia; unvaccinated travelers must undergo a PCR test no more than 72 hours before departure. Yellow fever vaccines are only required if you're coming from an area considered at risk.

Visas are required to visit Zambia, but these can be obtained online before your departure or at a port of entry. Check the State Department website for more details.

Zimbabwe: To enter Zimbabwe, travelers must either be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 or must take a negative PCR test no more than 48 hours before your departure. As with other countries on this list, visitors from countries with yellow fever outbreaks also require a vaccine against this illness.

U.S. visitors can obtain a 30-day, single-entry visa upon arrival in Zimbabwe for $30. If you're taking a tour that requires you to leave and reenter Zimbabwe, be sure to get a double-entry visa for $45. You can learn more from the State Department website .

Occasionally, Cruises Head to West Africa. Here’s What to Expect When They Do.

Hx expeditions (formerly hurtigruten expeditions) recently unveiled a new cruise itinerary to and through the remote islands off the coasts of senegal and guinea-bissau—and we were onboard..

In the elusive Bissagos (also known as Bijagos) archipelago, off the small, less-visited Guinea-Bissau, the wildlife superstars are saltwater hippos. While hiking some six miles on sand and dirt trails, including through grasses as high as my eye, to see them, I nearly ran into a crocodile hiding in the bush.

As startling as it was at the time, I had come on a new four-country HX Expeditions (formerly Hurtigruten Expeditions) cruise in West Africa for intrepid travel. My goal was not so much wildlife but the opportunity to visit remote villages in the Bissagos, where people live a deeply spiritual life connected to nature.

Some noncruisers may scoff at the word cruise , envisioning tourists dillydallying in hot tubs, sipping rum drinks. But HX took an expedition-cruise–style approach in creating this 13-night itinerary—and it would be extremely challenging to combine visits to Senegal, the Republic of Cabo Verde (also known as Cape Verde), the Bissagos Islands, and Gambia by any other form of travel. While on the 150-passenger MS Spitsbergen earlier this year, I did indulge in drinks such as a Coco Loco cocktail, a combination of rum and coconut milk served in a coconut, and there were hot tubs, but there was a real sense of adventure as well.

The 108 passengers on board ranged in age from those in their twenties to octogenarians and hailed from countries including the United States, Canada, Australia, and Germany (with translations available for the German contingent). I was traveling with my 23-year-old niece, Sasha. Eight expedition team members—scientists and other experts more versed in the Arctic and Antarctica (places where expedition ships such as this more typically sail) than in West Africa—organized outings like water landings off Zodiac boats in the Bissagos, during which we had to disembark into and trudge through shallow water to get ashore, protecting our ankles with scuba water shoes in case any baby stingrays happened by (they didn’t).

Aerial view of green mountain range in Cabo Verde

Cabo Verde reminded the writer of the Caribbean circa the ‘70s.

The itinerary started with a hotel night in Dakar, the capital of Senegal, and a preboarding visit via ferry to the island of Gorée, once the largest slave-trading center on the African coast. (With added-on excursions, we could visit a total of three sites related to the slave trade on this trip—the others on Santiago Island in Cape Verde and in Gambia—but, sadly, the gravity of these sites needed much more time and in-depth explanations than we were provided.)

After departing Senegal, we cruised some 400 miles west to Cape Verde, which gained independence from Portugal in 1975. While Cape Verde is definitely not undiscovered, it has certainly been less discovered by visitors—you can fly there, but places like the Canary Islands with their fancy resorts are more popular. With its laid-back vibe and stunning mountains, green valleys, and gorgeous ocean scenery, Cape Verde reminded me of the old Caribbean (circa the 1970s).

On three Cape Verde islands in three days, we had a choice of complimentary city tours and scenic drives or for-a-fee tours with extras such as hiking with local guides. A standout was on Fogo, exploring the six-by-four-mile crater where people live in a harsh black-rock landscape that looks like another planet, near a volcano that last erupted in 2014.

From there, it was off to Bissagos for four days, before a day in Gambia and disembarking back in Dakar.

The beauty and complexity of the remote Bissagos

The islands of Bissagos were formed from the ancient delta of two rivers and are subject to drastic changes in wind and tides. In the dry season, at times we had less than 33 feet below the ship and the captain relied on sonar to navigate safely. The 88 islands (only a quarter are occupied) encompass some 5,000 square miles, starting about 35 miles from mainland Guinea-Bissau. You can get to the Bissagos in small wooden boats, but few do—visitor numbers are in the hundreds not thousands.

The archipelago is a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve , recognized for its mangroves, savannas, palm groves, and tropical forests. In addition to the hippos and crocodiles, green turtles come to nest here, and stopping by are such migratory birds as flamingos.

As we approached for a four-day visit, joining the ship was our cultural interpreter, Sonia Marques-Durris, originally from Portugal, with her husband, Laurent, their toddler, and nanny. A well-known French fisherman, Laurent has lived in the Bissagos for 27 years, and Sonia for 13. They own Kere Island, which they purchased from locals and is home to their six-room eco-friendly fishing hotel . In the process of establishing themselves within the community, they were initiated into a village through ritual and ceremonies.

Sonia is among a very small number of trained guides in the region. During shipboard lectures, she did her best to explain a complicated culture, where women play an important role in civic life and ceremonies. The Bissajans believe their islands are inhabited by spirits and that souls can’t reach the afterlife without the help of the living, with women having the power to be possessed.

Some accounts claim the society is matriarchal. Sonia disputed this and on Kere Island, I sat down with Juliette Gomes, 33, a single mother of two who was laundering hotel linens by hand. When I asked through an interpreter if the society is run by women, she scoffed. “Men are in charge,” she declared.

A dancer with large plate balanced on head in the village of Ampincha on Carache Island

A woman takes a break from making palm oil to join an impromptu dance in the village of Ampincha on Carache Island.

The highlight of the cruise for me was the third day when we visited two villages and interacted with locals. The population of the Bissagos is not indigenous but descended from people who fled Male centuries ago. Today, people continue to live a traditional lifestyle in villages made up of adobe huts, most with grass roofs, connected by dirt paths and surrounded by old-growth trees, with a central square for ceremonies—and more isolated areas for initiations involving scarification. There’s no electricity, except for generators or solar panels at schools and, in some villages, a disco. Cooking takes place outside. The elders decide on the use of natural resources once they consult with spirits.

Sonia says villagers interact with the outside world—they can take small wooden boats to the mainland in less than two hours, and some do leave for work or for education—but most choose not to.

With villagers speaking Portuguese Creole, passengers communicated with them mostly nonverbally. Cameras and smartphones were a point of connection. We took photos and they asked to see them. Kids greeted us on the beach on Carache Island, where Sasha also communicated through cartwheels and dancing, which the kids mimicked, everyone giggling.

Cashews are Guinea-Bissau’s main export and we passed cashew trees on the way to Sonia’s initiation village, arriving to the sounds and sight of men rhythmically pounding palm in a metal barrel to make palm oil, which is used for cooking, winemaking, and in ceremonies. Women working over boiling pots, another stage of production, got up and did an impromptu dance, their grass skirts, or bark skirts for elders, covering colorful cotton dresses. Kids followed us around town.

In Anipoco on Caravela Island, young boys fought to hold my hand and girls followed Sasha’s every move, as we toured the village before gathering for a vigorous drumming and dance display, grass-skirted man dancing to mimic cows, which are held sacred. The performance ended abruptly when one dancer passed out. An evil spirit was to blame, we were told. Sonia later reported the man was OK.

Our fourth and final day in Bissagos was spent at Sonia and Laurent’s property, complete with a white-sand beach, open bar, crepes as snacks, and the only opportunity to buy some souvenirs.

In some ways it felt like a cruise line private island experience, but on a markedly more adventurous itinerary in a place much harder to reach.

During our day in Gambia, we opted for a “Roots” shore excursion, inspired by the Alex Haley book, that to my mind raised more questions about the slave trade than answers. But the trip was worth it for the opportunity to cross the Gambia River in a crowded local passenger ferry complete with vendors selling everything from food to electrical cords, men and women in colorful attire, a live goat or two, and some locals who were happy to strike up conversations.

We disembarked back in Dakar, with a least some insight into West Africa and more to study.

A side view of HX Expeditions' MS "Spitsbergen" expedition vessel

A ship that typically sails the world’s polar regions, the MS Spitsbergen recently explored West Africa instead.

Courtesy of Karsten Bidstrup/HX Expeditions

Our nearly two-week itinerary included several sea days, and HX Epeditions’ MS Spitsbergen , a former ferry completely reconfigured into an expedition ship in 2016, proved a very comfortable and delightfully unfussy venue for sailing. You could dress casual for dinner and there was the easy comradery that comes naturally on a small ship with open-seating buffet meals and late nights spent in the den-like Explorer Lounge, conversing over drinks. A highlight one evening was a crew rock band performing on deck, with many guests, and even the captain, inspired to dance.

Joining the 84-person crew for the West Africa route was affable chef Koffi Gassan from Togo, who gave lectures and cooking classes and prepared such West African dishes as Senegalese Chicken Yassa, consisting of chicken and caramelized onions; jollof rice (a one-pot dish with rice, tomatoes, chiles, and meat); and hot pepper soup. “This is my big dream my whole life to show my talents to the whole world,” he told me.

Like the rest of the ship, cabins are done up in appealing Scandinavian furnishings and cleverly designed to make optimum use of space. There are six categories, from tight 96-square-foot inside cabins (without windows) to a two-room, 355-square-foot Owner’s Suite (it sleeps four with a sofa bed) that comes with a balcony. Windowed Arctic Superior cabins are a nice middle ground, but if you suffer from motion sickness you may want to avoid the ones on the upper decks toward the front of the ship, where you may feel more movement.

In addition to a small gym, the MS Spitsbergen has an ocean-view sauna and two outdoor hot tubs. Loungers on the top deck are available for those who want to relax in the sun.

How to cruise in West Africa

After five West Africa sailings, culminating in January, HX will not be back this fall as planned due to concerns over political unrest in areas of West Africa. For now, the cruise line is calling it a “pause,” not quite ready to completely abandon the route. Travelers who are interested in the itinerary should check in with the line in the coming weeks and months to see if the West Africa sailings will start back up. This season’s 13-day West Africa cruises began at about $7,000 per person. French cruise line Ponant and ultra-luxe line Silversea are among the other cruise companies with springtime visits to the Bissagos and Cape Verde slated for this year and next.

The legacy of the Renaissance - a cultural movement borne in 14th-century Italy, which spread throughout Europe shaping intellectual life, art, architecture and the arts can be seen in abundance as you travel through the region’s most extraordinary cities. Discover the mind-blowing art of the Renaissance masters at Scuola Grande di San Rocco in Venice and Rome’s Galleria Borghese, a 17th-century villa which houses art, sculptures and antiquities. See first-hand why Michelangelo’s dreamy ceiling frescoes at the Sistine Chapel, and the famed corridors of Florentine mega-museum The Uffizzi deserve a spot on every art-lover’s bucket list. Just as compelling are Kotor’s Maritime Museum, which reveals the area’s fascinating seafaring history, and Malta’s National Museum of Archeology, which houses masses of prehistoric art and Neolithic pottery. Altogether more contemporary, is Cannes, renowned for its glamorous film festival.

A warm climate, fertile landscapes and teeming waters make for a rather delicious roll call as you sail through the Adriatic and the Western Mediterranean. Corsica’s signature civet de sanglier offers heartiness aplenty, while socca (chickpea pancakes) are a French Rivieran favorite, Marseille’s seafood bouillabaisse packs a liquorice-y kick thanks to fennel and  pastis , while Barcelona excels at seafood paella and crema catalana , a Catalan take on creme brûlée.

Take invigorating dips in Bari’s bays or sun yourself on Torre Sant’Andrea whilst admiring its dramatic sea stacks. Dubrovnik’s an adventure junkie’s dream; try cliff diving, kayaking, or scuba dive to see the Taranto wreck, and its quirky submerged tractors. Insider tips Good to know in every situation

When visiting religious sites such as churches, mosques or synagogues, dress modestly, particularly in the Middle East. Opt for long sleeves, and keep your shoulders, back and legs covered. A lightweight scarf or sarong can come in handy as a makeshift headscarf or coverup, which can be easily thrown on at the last minute if it’s unexpectedly required.

Sprawling ancient marvels and Europe’s cobblestone-lined, often narrow city streets are best explored on foot. To ensure you make the most of things, pack a well-worn-in pair of comfortable shoes, and some trusty blister plasters, just in case.

Temperatures in the Middle East and the Med can really soar, plus there’s plenty of time spent on beaches and in the desert on this segment, so invest in a decent wide-brimmed hat, eco-friendly sunscreen, and keep a refillable bottle of water with you as you explore.

The African safari has long epitomized the kind of quintessential and exotic adventure many travelers only dream of — remarkable untamed wilderness, majestic landscapes and some of the most unforgettable wildlife encounters. A safari heightens the senses and enlivens the spirit, providing the extraordinary opportunity to witness the iconic Big Five (the lion, elephant, leopard, rhinoceros and Cape buffalo) along with other stunning animals such as giraffes, cheetahs, hippos and zebras in their pristine, natural environments. Whether you’re a seasoned traveler to Africa, or this is a dream you’ve long been waiting to realize, we invite you to immerse yourself in an authentic safari experience on one of Oceania Cruises’ thrilling tours. Highlighted below are just a few of our professionally-guided safari tours, available on a range of voyages aside from those listed.

Kapama Private Game Reserve Covering approximately 30,000 acres of prime big game territory, Kapama Private Game Reserve combines exotic wilderness with the comforts of five-star hospitality. The Drakensberg mountain range provides a majestic backdrop for the largest private game lodge in the Greater Kruger National Park region. Nestled along the riverbed, Kapama River Lodge offers luxurious safari accommodations, while the natural environment and lush ecosystem create the perfect opportunity for a close encounter with some or all of the Big Five African animals, or any number of other unique animal species that roam the reserve.

Encounter herds of zebras during a game drive

Chobe and Victoria Falls The Chobe Game Lodge in Botswana sits above the Chobe River, offering panoramic views across miles of islands and flood plains. Chobe National Park is famous for its abundant elephant herds and is home to many other animal species as well. Relax on your private veranda after a day on a safari, or enjoy a Chobe River sundowner cruise for spectacular sunset views. Then, enjoy the fabulous vista of Victoria Falls – in sheer scope, the largest waterfall in the world. Known to locals as the “smoke that thunders,” its roar deafens as the Zambezi River plunges into the chasm below.

Legends of Kruger Established in 1898 to protect the wildlife of the South African savannas, Kruger National Park offers the ultimate safari experience. Morning and afternoon game drives provide multiple opportunities to view the tremendous variety of wildlife that roams this vast reserve. You will likely see not only the Big Five, but also Africa’s unusual flora such as baobabs and fever trees, as well as an astounding array of exotic birds. During the evenings, enjoy the stunning views from the open decks of your luxurious lodge overlooking the Lwakahle River.

Witness the iconic Big Five on a memorable safari

Winelands & Wildlife Explore the bustling harbor city of Cape Town before taking a journey to the famous Cape Winelands, set below the dramatic mountain range Hottentots Holland. Tour the Winelands, home of some of the world’s finest wines and Stellenbosch, the second oldest town in South Africa. During your visit to an estate, have lunch and enjoy a wine tasting. The following day features an extraordinary wildlife experience on a hosted game drive through one of Africa’s pristine wildlife reserves, where you will see some of Africa’s most iconic animals, including the Big Five in their natural habitat.

The family that vacations together, stays together

  • Newsletter sign up Newsletter

People on a Cottar's Safaris truck watch a cheetah sitting on the grass

Multigenerational trips are special. Grandparents and grandchildren connecting over card games on the beach, cousins bonding while horseback riding and adult siblings reminiscing during a late night on the town: These simple activities turn into lasting memories. Here are seven ideas for vacations where hanging out with your family is at the top of the itinerary.

Have the ultimate dude ranch experience at C Lazy U Ranch in Granby, Colorado

A woman rides a horse across a field in Colorado

Horseback riding is one of the activities offered year-round at C Lazy U Ranch.

Giddy up! The all-inclusive C Lazy U lets everyone in the family live out their ranch dreams. Activities change with the seasons. Come in the summer to try cattle pushing and fly fishing, visit during the winter for snow tubing and snowmobiling — with horseback riding offered year-round. Kids and teens have their own special program, with ranch counselors leading them on adventures from sunrise to sunset. This is a luxury dude ranch with fine dining, plush cabins and the group-friendly Midnight Trail Lodge, a 3,600-square-foot space fit for the entire family.

Go on an unforgettable African safari with Cottar's Safaris in Maasai Mara, Kenya

A large family tent at Cottar's Safaris in Kenya

Everyone can spread out comfortably in the family tent at the vintage 1920s Camp

Few experiences can beat an African safari. What is better than being in the heart of the wild, knowing that any moment you might see a giraffe or hear the roar of a distant lion? Cottar's Safaris in Kenya offers educational and authentic adventures for families, with two luxe properties on the private Olderkesi Wildlife Conservancy in the Maasai Mara. The 1920s Camp has 11 canvas tents, including four designed for families, plus the private Bush Villa with five bedrooms, a pool and a dedicated chef and guide. Most activities are included, like wildlife drives, wilderness runs with Maasai warriors, stargazing, a foraging and medicinal walk and educational talks. Cottar's Safaris works with the local Maasai community on sustainability and conservation efforts, and families can get involved by planting seeds and joining rangers on their daily patrols.

Hit the beach at Grand Velas in Los Cabos, Mexico

An aerial view of the turquoise water and sandy beach in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico

The Grand Velas is right on the beach in Los Cabos

At the all-inclusive Grand Velas , you never hear the dreaded words "I'm bored." Something is always going on. A typical day starts with morning yoga sessions, followed by Spanish lessons, cooking classes, poolside bingo, soccer games, ping pong tournaments and tequila tastings. Kids and teens can hang out in their own spaces for karaoke, gaming and arts and crafts (piñatas are great souvenirs). Families looking for a less structured vacation can hit the beach, lounge by one of the resort's infinity pools or relax in their suite — every suite boasts an ocean view and outdoor terrace.

Explore the rugged White Mountains in Lincoln, New Hampshire

The welcome to White Mountain National Forest sign in Lincoln, New Hampshire

You know you made it to Lincoln when you see this sign

Tucked in the White Mountains of New Hampshire is Lincoln, a town filled with natural wonders like the 800-foot-long Flume Gorge and peaceful Franconia Falls. This area attracts outdoorsy families that like to start and end a day with a hike and skiing in between. The boutique Launchpoint Lodge is a good home base. Designed for guests 12 and older, this six-suite hotel is for families with older kids. There are several common spaces, including the fully-stocked coffee lounge, sitting room and sunroom. If you have a big enough group, rent out the entire property and make yourself fully at home.

Take a cruise to Alaska with Princess

The Margerie Glacier in Alaska's Glacier Bay National Park

Most Alaskan cruises glide by the Margerie Glacier, an icon of Glacier Bay National Park

On a multigenerational trip, not everyone will have the same endurance levels or mobility. An Alaskan cruise levels the playing field, allowing families to gather together on one ship for the same experience, but with itineraries that work with individual needs. That might mean the whole crew gathers in the grandparents' room when the ship glides by Glacier Bay National Park, but only the parents and grandkids get off the boat to explore Ketchikan, with everyone regrouping at dinner. Princess cruise ships offer a good balance of family-friendly onboard activities and entertainment and experiences solely for adults, like the Sanctuary retreat.

The resort resembles a frontier town, with colorful buildings, a general store and a saloon slinging burgers, shakes and spirits. Guests can reserve a comfortable, pet-friendly room, stay in a vintage Airstream trailer or hook up their RV in a pull-through or back in-site close to shower and laundry facilities. Families looking for an adventure can explore the nearby Anza-Borrego Desert State Park or walk by more than 130 massive metal sculptures scattered across Galleta Meadows . At night, look up. Borrego Springs is an International Dark Sky community , making stargazing a must.

Have an immersive experience at Colonial Williamsburg, Virginia

A colonial house where visitors to Colonial Williamsburg can stay

In Colonial Williamsburg, visitors can stay where 18th century residents once lived

Take a trip back in time with the whole family. Colonial Williamsburg is a living museum with dozens of original 18th-century buildings, from a courthouse to the Wythe House where Thomas Jefferson studied law. Visitors can stay in the Colonial Houses , accommodations where Williamsburg residents once lived. There are modern amenities too, like indoor and outdoor pools and daily fitness classes. Walking around Williamsburg, you might come across a carpenter using an old tool to show a traditional woodworking technique or a milliner working on her latest hat. Changes are afoot, with the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation announcing it will introduce or expand on the stories told about Black, Indigenous and LGBTQ history.

10 Best African Countries for Safari

Posted: December 19, 2023 | Last updated: December 19, 2023

#1 Botswana

Recommended Tours:

Thus, poachers are seen as enemies of the people. As a result, Botswana has come into view as Africa's most sought-after ecotourism destination. Starting from the Chobe National Park to the Moremi Nature Reserve, you'll be able to witness numerous gems all around the country.

Back in 2014, Botswana widely banned the hunting of wild animals and implemented strict laws which are still in practice. The country resumes its zero-tolerance for poaching and their very own environmental minister, Tshekedi Khama, has even launched a shoot-to-kill policy for poachers.

Botswana, with its wildlife conservation and natural parks, is a haven for nature lovers. It is currently in the top 5, as its approach to the protection and conservation of wildlife is worth the praise. As a country, it is very forward-thinking, some may even call it aggressively forward-thinking when it comes to its preservation and anti-poaching laws.

<p><strong>Recommended Tours:</strong></p> <p>Its fertile land provides a safe and comforting home to around 200 <a class="wpil_keyword_link" href="https://www.animalsaroundtheglobe.com/mammals/" title="mammal">mammal</a> species. This includes elephants, hippos, monkeys and so much more. Along with 650 bird species and 5,500 plants. Even though the country is still underdeveloped and most of the population live in rural households, its national parks, and sight-seeing destinations are on the top 10 of our lists.</p> <p>Even though many would face some difficulties in locating Malawi on a map, given how tiny it is, the country is home to the world-renowned Lake Malawi National Park. This is practically one-third of the country and is the most biodiverse lake in the world.</p>

Most of the land in Namibia is occupied by the Kalahari and Namib Deserts. Along with that, the country also has 12 national parks and many other areas which are protected. So, if you go there for a safari, you'll have many rich areas to see and explore.

When it comes to countries with the least amount of population, Namibia is one of them. Which proves to be a good thing for nature. This is because most of the land in Namibia is still unspoiled by human filth or any sort of development, giving nature a chance to breathe.

cruise african safari

In the country's Volcanoes National Park, you'll find 10 habituated gorilla families. Groups of 8 trekkers can visit them for one hour per day. But that's enough to get the best African safari experience. And as a nature lover, you'll enjoy the experience to the max.

If you've been around for some time, you'll be familiar with Rwanda's mountain gorillas. They were famously broadcasted and their fight for survival was shown on  National Geographic . This was all thanks to the late  Dian Fossey  back in the 1970s who advocated for the rights of these mountain gorillas throughout her life.

Considering the tragic history surrounding the mass genocide of the people of Rwanda back in 1994, it's truly a blessing what the country has achieved in the past 25 years. There have been countless investments in infrastructure. This has resulted in the country being a very fast-growing destination for ecotourism.

cruise african safari

#6 South Africa

But given all the advantages, it's safe to conclude that South Africa also suffers from over-tourism. I mean, if you have so many great attractions, people will flock towards it. Chances are that you'll find yourself in the middle of dozens of unruly visitors who are not too keen on obeying the rules. This occurs mostly during the peak seasons.

Annually, the country has one million visitors. Its biggest attraction is the Kruger National Park with its enrichment in biodiversity. Visitors there also have the liberty to self-drive, thus, getting a first-person private but superb experience.

For some time now, South Africa has been climbing the charts to become one of the most popular destinations for African safaris. Given its location, South Africa is a very convenient and cheap destination for people from the United States. Besides that, the country also boasts a well-developed infrastructure which makes it perfect for luxury travelers as well.

cruise african safari

#7 Tanzania

One of the most popular locations would be the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. The country is also a haven for 1100 different bird species. It's no wonder that Tanzania gets this much rep. Especially when the country boasts so many wonders.

We talked about Kenya being the top destination for Safari. Now Tanzania here takes second place in being the continent's most popular safari destination. And why shouldn't it? The country has 16 national parks and an extraordinary amount of wealth and wildlife wonders for the people to witness.

cruise african safari

Some of its natural attractions include housing the highest mountain range in Africa. It also has the world's largest free-standing volcano and the second-largest freshwater lake. With its 30 national parks and other wildlife reserves, Uganda boasts many more sanctuaries which are worth the visit. Especially if you're a lover of nature and wildlife.

Often called "The Pearl of Africa", Uganda is certainly a great pick for an African safari. Its reputation as being one of the best ecotourism destinations comes from the country's natural attractions and wildlife.

<p><strong>Recommended Tours:</strong></p> <p>Out of its 20 national parks, the Mosi-oa-Tunya National Park is home to many wildlife animals such as African elephants, Angolan giraffes, Cape buffalo, etc. Other than that, there are many private ownerships of National parks, notably the Kasanka National Park which is near the basin of Lake Bangweulu. It's a safe place where visitors can see 400 different avian species.</p> <p>Zambia may be a bit far down the list of popular destinations for your African safari, but many consider it to be a destination for diversified and immersive safari experiences, and making a notable feature on our 10 Best African Countries for Safari guide. The country is steadily focusing on conservation as their president has shown a keen interest and is working on building the nation's economy as well as the infrastructure.</p>
