WC says summer tourism supported over 9000 jobs
Brendyn lotz.
- 16th April 2024
- 466 469 tourists arrived in Cape Town between December and February supporting as many as 9 329 jobs in the process.
- Tourism is a key part of Western Cape’s job creation plan.
- However, citizens in the province are concerned about the effect that digital nomads have on the cost of rentals and the overall cost of living.
Nearly half a million tourists – 466 469 to be precise – from abroad visited the Western Cape between December 2023 and February 2024 says Provincial Minister of Finance and Economic Opportunities, Mireille Wenger.
These figures are based on the number of international terminal passengers that arrived at Cape Town International Airport throughout the reporting period. This influx of visitors supported 9329 jobs in the province. These jobs include direct, indirect, induced and tourism catalytic employment opportunities in the air transport sector.
“We know, based on calculations by the Western Cape Government’s (WCG) tourism, trade and investment promotion agency, Wesgro, that with the arrival of every 100 international terminal passengers, 2 jobs are supported. This means the total number of jobs supported by arrivals at the international terminal alone, is just over 9 300 jobs,” said Wenger.
“Guided by our economic action plan, ‘Growth for Jobs’, we are not just setting goals; we are laying down a roadmap to achieve a R1 trillion economy marked by inclusivity, resilience, and diversity. Our ambition is to cultivate an environment ripe for ‘breakout economic growth’, ensuring that the Western Cape not only meets but exceeds expectations in terms of job creation and economic development. Tourism is a key part of this plan and one of our key targets under G4J is to double the number of visitors to our province by 2035,” the MEC added.
The Western Cape is a massive tourist attraction. Aside from the natural wonders, the wine farms, the beaches, the restaurants and the food, the weather can be excellent during the holiday season. Of course, the weather can also turn on a dime but a few rainy days are a good trade-off for the warm beach days that follow.
However, we can’t ignore one aspect of tourism that hurts citizens in the Western Cape – the tourists who don’t leave. The Western Cape government has worked hard to attract digital nomads to the province.
These are workers who can and do work from anywhere. They often earn in foreign currency and as such, opt to work in idyllic locations where their money goes further than in the likes of New York or London. The problem here is that because money isn’t an object to most, if not all digital nomads, the cost of living in that city tends to go up.
For citizens in Cape Town, this can make property costs unaffordable and pushes them to the suburbs which adds commute costs and other expenses to the equation. Digital nomads reportedly spend as much as $2 700 during their stay, according to a BBC report but is it a worthwhile trade-off?
The government seems to think so as it pushes forward with its plans to introduce a remote work visa . Western Cape residents aren’t pleased with this and understandably so when rental units start to resemble prison cells but fetch as much as a free-standing home in other provinces.
While tourism may be supporting jobs, we really wish more was being done to protect citizens from predatory pricing especially from landlords looking to attract digital nomads.

Preliminary figures from the first three months (Dec-Feb) of the four-month peak summer tourism season, indicate the arrival of almost half a million (466 469) international terminal passengers at Cape Town International Airport (Source: ACSA) alone, supported just over 9300 (9329) jobs across the Western Cape, which include direct, indirect, induced and tourism catalytic employment opportunities in the air transport sector.
“We know, based on calculations by the Western Cape Government’s (WCG) tourism, trade and investment promotion agency, Wesgro, that with the arrival of every 100 international terminal passengers, 2 jobs are supported. This means the total number of jobs supported by arrivals at the international terminal alone, is just over 9 300 jobs,” said the Provincial Minister of Finance and Economic Opportunities, Mireille Wenger.
The Western Cape is a world-class tourism destination, being home to some of the best brandy, wines, food, and olive oil in the world. We also have the second-best beach globally thanks to our rock-hopper penguin friends at the stunning Boulder’s Beach, and with our home base of Cape Town being voted the best city in the world by the Telegraph Travel Awards.
Tourism is a key part of this plan and one of our key targets under G4J is to double the number of visitors to our province by 2035,” she continued.
“This excellent news strengthens our resolve to make sure the Western Cape works and grows as a choice destination. This means that just as we continue to work with our partners and stakeholders to attract more visitors, we will work equally hard to remove obstacles to this growth, including addressing the increasingly disastrous South African visa regime,” concluded Minister Wenger.

Cape Town Air Access Celebrates Increased Connectivity with Norse Atlantic Airways’ Direct Flight from London Gatwick
Norse Atlantic Airways will commence a new affordable service between London Gatwick Airport and Cape Town International Airport
- The service will operate seasonally with three weekly flights starting on 28 October 2024.
- The flight will arrive in Cape Town at 09:30 on a Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday before departing for London Gatwick (LGW) at 11:45
- Norse Atlantic Airways will operate the service on a Boeing 787-9
Cape Town Air Access, in association with Norse Atlantic Airways, is thrilled to announce the introduction of a new direct flight route connecting Cape Town International Airport (CPT) to London Gatwick Airport (LGW). Commencing on 28 October 2024, Norse Atlantic Airways will operate three flights per week on this route, significantly enhancing connectivity between Cape Town and the United Kingdom.
This strategic partnership marks a milestone in Cape Town's efforts to bolster its global connectivity, particularly with one of its key source markets for international passengers. The addition of Norse Atlantic Airways' direct flights will increase the weekly international flights between Cape Town and the United Kingdom to 27 flights per week during the upcoming International Air Transport Association (IATA) Winter season for 2024/25 which coincides with the South African Summer Season. This not only offers travellers greater convenience but also boosts the region's economic growth, helping create jobs in the tourism industry. The United Kingdom holds a significant position as Cape Town's top market for international passenger traffic, followed by the United States and Germany. In 2023, the market witnessed an impressive 54% growth in two-way passenger traffic compared to 2022, with more than 360 000 passengers flying between the two destinations.
The addition of another service out of London Gatwick will increase traveller options between London and Cape Town, especially for price-sensitive South African passengers. Traffic between LGW and CPT reached over 43 000 two-way passengers in 2023, underlining the strong demand for connectivity between these two world-class airport destinations. The introduction of Norse Atlantic Airways' direct flights is expected to further stimulate tourism, facilitating seamless connections for both business and leisure travellers.
A recent country report from Wesgro’s Research Unit highlights the United Kingdom's significance beyond tourism, underscoring its pivotal role in Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) within the region. Between January 2010 and November 2023, the UK initiated a total of 105 FDI projects in the Western Cape. These projects have contributed significantly to the region's economic development, generating an estimated capex exceeding R25 billion and creating over 6,600 jobs.
"Cape Town Air Access remains committed to expanding its network and fostering partnerships that enhance connectivity and drive economic development across the region. With the launch of Norse Atlantic Airways' direct flights to London Gatwick, Cape Town and the Western Cape look forward to welcoming even more visitors and strengthening its position as a premier global destination," said Wrenelle Stander, Wesgro CEO and Official Spokesperson for Cape Town Air Access.
“This new direct flight from London highlights our destination’s continued strength and appeal with travellers and investors in the UK and other key source markets. It further shows the value of the Air Access initiative, as supported by the City, and the reach of our campaigns. My team and I will continue to support these efforts to ensure more travel and trade to Cape Town. This includes our efforts to lobby National Government to liberalise measures for a more open air transport market. Where implemented, it has resulted in an increased utilisation of airspace, more competitive fares and more choices for travellers,” said Mayoral Committee Member for Economic Growth at the City of Cape Town, Alderman James Vos.
Provincial Minister for Finance and Economic Opportunities, Mireille Wenger, celebrated this exciting announcement, “We look forward to giving the new Norse Atlantic Airways route and passengers a very warm Western Cape welcome. As a world-class tourism destination, and home to some of the best wines, culinary delights, adventure and leisure options in the world, as well as breath-taking natural beauty, I am certain that this new route will be a great success, offering international visitors the opportunity to enjoy the many and diverse offerings we have across the Western Cape. This is also excellent news for our economy because more tourists mean more jobs in the province. A very big thank you to the amazing Air Access team, powered by Wesgro, for the work they do to land more flights, connecting Cape Town and the Western Cape to key source markets, bringing economic growth and job creation to the Western Cape.”
“Airports Company South Africa (ACSA) celebrates Norse Atlantic’s announcement of its route to Cape Town International Airport. New routes solidify renewed confidence in the City, the region and country's appeal, and contributes to bolstering its economic growth. ACSA is proud to be a partner of Cape Town Air Access which continues to deliver excellent results in enhancing international connectivity to the region. As the primary gateway to the Mother City, we eagerly anticipate servicing Norse Atlantic Airways and welcoming their passengers," said Mark Maclean, Regional General Manager for Cape Town International Airport.
“We are thrilled to introduce our new route between London and Cape Town. Norse Atlantic is committed to delivering exceptional value without compromising on quality and we believe that everyone deserves the opportunity to experience the wonders of the world and our new route between London and Cape Town will allow many more people to visit these amazing destinations,” said Bjorn Tore Larsen, CEO and Founder of Norse Atlantic Airways.

Answer the following question
Three + One
Going for a safari in Cape Town? Pack these essentials
Cape Town , a radiant city at the southernmost point of Africa , is the perfect starting point for a variety of eco-conscious safari adventures. Here, travelers have the unique opportunity to observe the stunning array of African wildlife in their natural settings. These safaris not only offer unforgettable experiences but also emphasize the importance of preserving the intricate balance of these fragile ecosystems.
Sustainable safari attire
Pack for your Cape Town safari with clothing made from natural fibers such as cotton or linen, which are breathable and environmentally friendly. Choose light colors that reflect the sun's heat and blend with the natural landscape. Your safari gear should be durable and comfortable, ensuring you are well-prepared for the adventure that awaits in the wild.
Eco-friendly gear must-haves
Opt for high-quality, eco-friendly gear that withstands numerous safaris. A reusable water bottle is key to stay hydrated without adding to plastic waste. Ethically produced binoculars are essential for wildlife observation. Solar-powered chargers are also vital, allowing you to use the abundant African sun to power your devices. These items are not only practical but also support environmental sustainability on your travels.
Responsible wildlife watching
On your safari, it's vital to watch wildlife from a safe distance and heed your guide's advice. Silent camera shutters are a must to avoid startling the animals. Never feed them or try to touch them. Your actions should be unobtrusive, preserving the animals' natural behaviors and their habitat. This respect ensures a genuine experience while safeguarding the environment you're there to enjoy.
Supporting local conservation efforts
Opt for safari tours run by companies that are deeply involved in local conservation. This choice means you're investing in the protection of Cape Town's diverse wildlife and habitats. Additionally, when buying souvenirs, seek out those crafted by local artisans. Your purchases will aid in promoting sustainable tourism and the economic growth of the community, further supporting the region's unique cultural and natural heritage.
Leave no trace behind
When visiting, it's crucial to adopt the "Leave No Trace" ethos. Carry out all trash, ensuring nothing is left behind. Dispose of waste responsibly once you're beyond the safari bounds. Always use marked trails to reduce your impact on animal homes and vegetation. Heed your tour guide's instructions about conserving the environment to maintain the area's natural beauty and wildlife.
