US tourist visa requirements are clear and detailed. US visa application is a multi-step process. The first step of the application process is to fill DS-160 form online. The second step is to schedule the visa interview appointment. This step involves paying the visa fee and picking the location and date of your visa interview.

Visa interview is mandatory so it can be intimidating for some. If you have a genuine reason to visit the US along with relevant data and documentation, the odds of visa approval are high.

Validity of US tourist visa

The validity of US visas depends on the country of passport. US tourist visas are usually issued for 1 year, 5 years or 10 years.

Example: The B1/B2 or B2 visas for Afghanistan passport holders are valid for 1 year only. Whereas, for Bangladesh passport holders, the B1/B2 visas are valid for 5 years. For Indian passport holders, B1/B2 visas are valid for 10 years.

When to apply for US tourist visa

You can apply for US tourist visa as early as you can. Unlike, other country visas, US visa can be applied as early as you. I have seen some readers apply as much as 1 year in advance.

How long can your stay in the US

The US tourist visa allows you to stay up to 180 days in the US. But if you stay that long continuously in the US on a tourist visa, you will have trouble entering the US again. You may be questioned on your purpose of visit.

Unlike other country visas, US visa has no processing time. Meaning, the visa officer will tell your visa result at the end of your interview. You will be able to pick up or receive your passport within 3-10 business days from your interview day.

1. Fill DS-160 form online

The first step in the US visa application process is to fill DS-160 form online . It is a lengthy form, so it can take a few days to complete. You would need to gather and compile a lot of information for the form.

I recommend starting your application process as early as possible.

2. Schedule US visa appointment

The second step in the visa application process is to schedule US visa appointment . This involves paying the visa fee, and selecting the location and date of your interview.

Depending on the country where you would like to attend your visa interview, you would need to schedule one or two appointments. Some countries require an additional appointment for fingerprints and photos.

The website and the procedure to schedule US visa appointment is different in different countries.

If you are attending your US visa interview in Asia, Central America, parts of Europe, Africa and the Middle East, you must schedule your appointment on the US Travel Docs website.

If you plan to attend your US visa interview in North and South America, parts of Europe, Africa and the Middle East, you must schedule your appointment on the US Visa Information and Appointment System .

2.1. Pay US tourist visa fee

The US visa application fee is $160 payable in US dollars or local currency (in Asia only). You can pay your visa fee in various ways, such as cash at a local bank, electronic fund transfer or using a credit card.

2.2. Schedule fingerprints and photo appointment

Certain countries such as Mexico requires an additional appointment for fingerprints and photo. You will be prompted to make this additional appointment as part of your visa interview appointment.

2.3. Schedule visa interview appointment

Available dates and times for your visa type are displayed on the screen. Pick the date and time that works best for you.

3. Attend US visa interview

Attending US visa interview is a feat in itself. The high-security US embassy and the intimidating visa officers can make the entire process daunting and overwhelming.

But if you break the interview process into smaller steps and tackle them individually, it can be less stressful. Let’s look at these steps individually in detail.

3.1. Preparation

• Go over your DS-160 to familiarize yourself with the information you have entered. You may be asked the same questions in the interview. You must not contradict your own answers.
• Go over the top 5 US interview questions and answers. Sit and answer all of those questions. Make a note of them if you have to.
• Write down any other questions on your purpose, industry, etc and prepare them as well.

3.2. Planning

• Gather the documentation that you would need to carry
• Print any documentation that needs to be printed
• Organize your documentation in an easily retrievable format
• Familiarize yourself with directions and transportation options to the embassy
• Wash, iron and have your interview clothes ready

PRO TIP Use a compartment folder to sort and organize your documentation. Label the compartments if you have to it.

PERSONAL EXPERIENCE I was not asked to show any documentation at all during my US B1/B2 visa interview. I did take my bank statements, my payment receipts for the conference I was attending, and my business cards as a blogger and travel writer.

The interview procedure varies slightly from location to location. This 10-step procedure gives you an overall idea of what to expect.

• Arrive at the embassy
• Present your appointment confirmation at the gate
• Go through the security
• Deposit your ID proof
• Deposit your cell phone and keys
• Stand in the line for fingerprints and photo
• Give your fingerprints and photo
• Stand in line for the interview

3.5. Dos and Don’ts of the Appointment

• Arrive on Time: The time of your appointment is the time to arrive at the gate of the embassy. It is NOT the time of your actual interview. You must arrive not more than 15 min before your appointment time. Otherwise, you will be sent back and asked to arrive at your appointment time.
• No Electronics: Only a cell phone and keyfob are allowed into the embassy. Any other electronics such as tablets, laptops, etc. are not allowed into the embassy and you will be sent back.
• No Bags: Backpacks and luggage are not allowed into the embassy. The embassy will not store any bags and you will be sent back.
• No Non-permitted Items: Non-permitted items such as cigarettes, lighter, sharp objects, food items, etc are not allowed. You will have to discard them or you will be sent back.
• Carry Documents: You can only carry documents in a see-through folder or plastic bag.

3.6. Dos and Don’ts of the Interview

• Be honest: Visa officers are very well-trained and have years of experience. They see thousands of applicants in their careers. They can easily spot lies and manipulative answers. Be honest in your answers.
• Be confident: Stand straight. Be loud and clear. Ask the visa officer to repeat the question if you did not understand. Don’t change your answers if you are asked to repeat them.
• Don’t show desperation: Don’t show any signs of desperation. Visa officers are very well-trained and have years of experience. They can easily spot desperation.
• Say only what’s needed: Answer only with the information needed. Say what is needed, nothing else. Any extra information can lead to unnecessary questions that you may not have answers for.
• Be fluent in your English: This is a tricky one. Visa officers will not have much time and they can be impatient at times. If your answers are not clear and difficult to understand, it can impact your visa result. Improve your English speaking skills. Get rid of any accent if you have.
• Carry all relevant documentation: Make sure you have all the documentation with you. There should not be a situation where you don’t have a document that you are asked to present.
• Organize your documentation: Organize your documents in a smart way, so you can retrieve them right away when asked. Shuffling through the documents, taking too long to retrieve a document, and mishandling documents can affect your visa result.
• Dress appropriately: Dressing appropriately makes you presentable. It boosts your confidence as well.
• Choose your visa officer: Last but not least. If you have the opportunity to choose your visa officer, go to a visa officer who looks friendly and close to the same age as yours.

3.7. US tourist visa interview questions

During the US B1/B2 visa interview, you will be asked a few questions. These questions can be the same as what you already have in your DS-160 or completely different.

• Why do you want to go to the US?
• How long do you plan to stay in the US?
• Have you been to the US before?
• Have you been to other countries?
• What do you do for a living?

Each above question can lead to many other questions depending on your answers. For example, “What do you do for a living” can lead to questions such as how long you have been working, how much money you make, etc.

3.8. Visa Result

You will be told the result of the visa at the end of the interview. Therefore, at the end of the interview, you will know whether your visa is approved or denied or needs additional information.

If approved, you will be told that your visa is approved. You will be given a sheet of paper with instructions on how to pick up your passport or when to expect the delivery.

If denied, you will be told that your visa is denied. Your passport and documentation will be returned back to you. You will also be given a sheet of paper marking the section under which your visa application was denied.

If the visa officer needs additional information, you will be given a sheet of paper with details and the steps to continue from there.

4. Pick up Passport

If your visa is approved, your passport will be ready for pick up within 3-10 working days. You will be notified via email or SMS that your passport is ready for pickup.

If you have requested for your passport to be delivered, you will be notified via email or SMS when the passport is dispatched. You should receive it in 3-10 working days.

After you pick up or receive your passport, verify your visa for any discrepancies. If you see any discrepancy, contact the consulate/embassy immediately.

What’s next?

Get ready for your US trip. US tourist visas are usually valid for 10 years and multiple entries. You can travel to the US anytime within the validity of your US visa. You can also enter as many times as you want.

Healthcare in the US is quite expensive. Most travel insurance does not cover travel in the US. So make sure to purchase insurance that is specifically meant for US travel.

ENTERING AND LEAVING THE US

Port of entry in US airports usually has two lines for arriving passengers. One for citizens and permanent residents and the other for visitors. You will go and stand in the visitor’s line. When your turn comes, you will be sent to either an automated kiosk or to an immigration officer.

If you are sent to an automated kiosk, just follow the instructions on the screen. You will scan your visa page and your details will appear on the screen. Review the details. Go through the steps and print your receipt.

Once you print your receipt, proceed toward an immigration officer. Present your passport and receipt.

You may be asked a few questions. Your passport will then be stamped with the appropriate visa type and the date until which you can remain in the US. Your passport and receipt will be returned back to you.

If you are sent to an immigration officer instead of an automated kiosk, just present your passport, boarding pass and completed customs form.

Verify the stamp, visa type and date immediately for any discrepancy.

After you finish your immigration procedure, walk to your baggage claim carousel. Pick up your bags and head to the exit.

Before the exit, you will go through the customs screening. You will have to present the customs form or receipt that you received at the immigration. The customs officer will then indicate whether you can just walk out or scan your baggage.

If you are asked to scan your baggage, continue to the baggage scanning area and put all your baggage on the scanner conveyer belt. Pick up your bags after the scan and walk towards the exit.

Unlike many other countries, the US does not have exit passport control. There will not be any immigration checks while exiting the US.

Passport validity

If you are visiting the USA your passport should be valid for the proposed duration of your stay. You don’t need any additional period of validity on your passport beyond this.

Global Entry programme

The US Customs and Border Protection programme Global Entry allows pre-approved travellers through border control faster at some US airports. If you’re a British citizen, you can register to get a UK background check on GOV.UK . If you pass the background checks, you’ll be invited to apply for Global Entry.

Visa requirements

You will need either an Electronic System for Travel Authorisation (ESTA) visa waiver or a visa to enter or transit the USA as a visitor.

You are not normally eligible for an ESTA visa waiver if you have been in the following countries on or after March 2011:

• North Korea

You cannot apply for an ESTA visa waiver if you have travelled to or been in Cuba on or after 12 January 2021. You must instead apply for a US visa.

You cannot apply for an ESTA visa waiver if you:

• have been arrested (even if the arrest did not result in a criminal conviction)
• have a criminal record
• have been refused admission into, or have been deported from the USA
• have previously overstayed under an ESTA visa waiver

US visa appointments

Visa appointments at the US Embassy in London are limited. Plan your application as far ahead as possible before travel. If you need to travel urgently, you can request an expedited interview through the US Embassy’s appointment service provider.

Children and young people

Under-18s must:

• have a valid visa or ESTA visa waiver on arrival
• be able to provide evidence about the purpose, location and length of their visit if asked by immigration officials
• have written consent from one or both parents if travelling alone, with only one parent, or with someone who is not a parent or legal guardian

The US authorities can stop you entering the country if they have safeguarding concerns about a child. If this happens, the US authorities will take the child into their care. Their return from the USA could take months. The FCDO cannot speed up the return of British nationals who are under 18 from the USA.

Got it! Thanks for the info. Do we know when that can potentially be ratified?

The proposal to postpone the visa requirement is currently dead in the water because there is a fair amount of government opposition to a postponement.

My guess is once the visa requirement goes into effect next Wednesday, the proposal to postpone will most likely be permanently withdrawn.

Let's hope it is postponed until 2025 or beyond or that it never happens at all!

As someone who applied seven weeks ago and is still dealing with this nightmare, if I knew how bad it would be I'd have just planned a trip elsewhere. Some people have zero problems and others have a nightmare on their hands. Our trip is ten days away and we are still without one visa for a family member. Incompetency doesn't come close to describing what is going on with the visa company. I wish they'd at least postpone until the VFS gets it together.

So far it's up in the air, I think it likely will be postponed (God willing), maybe the reason why their government is dragging their feet at the moment is probably because they don't want to commit just yet, it will be dumb to announce this just to completely withdraw it at the last minute while there's still a certain amount people who are having issues with applying and getting their visas in time for their trips, the e-visa website is glitchy, this inconvenience will just cause a huge drop in the amount of tourists who plan to visit, which means the country will lose money, postponing it to next year would be a no-brainer, their VSF company is just not ready yet, one of the customer service agents who I spoke on the phone with did a horrible job with giving me a direct answer when I called to ask about this, he sounded like he had no experience in CSR, I bet the average person could do his job way better than him, I'm planning to go in August for 2 weeks, me and one of my friends was going to book the trip but he told me about the visa requirement being effective this month, so we're opting to apply for the visa first before booking the trip just to avoid any stress of waiting after booking, but for now we gonna wait and see what happens in a few days before we continue with anything, we all shall found out on April 10th what the outcome will be

U.S. Citizens Will Need to Register and Pay a Fee to Enter Europe in 2024—Here’s What to Know

E ach year, American tourists flock to Europe to glimpse the Eiffel Tower, Big Ben, the Sistine Chapel and thousands of other must-see attractions. With so many landmarks to explore in Western Europe and beyond, it's no surprise the continent is a top destination for U.S. citizens. According to the consumer research company Statista, more than 10 million Americans made the trek to France , Italy , Spain and Germany in 2019 alone. But if you want to travel there after January 2024, you'll have to register and pay a fee. It's all thanks to the newly launched European Travel Information and Authorization System (ETIAS).

The European Union's new system will add an extra step to your travel requirements for 30 European countries. But though it sounds complicated, the process won't be difficult. And we've got everything you need to know before you book your next European vacay.

What is ETIAS?

There's no such thing as an ETIAS visa, and the system isn't a digital nomad visa either. So what is it, then? According to the official website, ETIAS is the "new travel permit for Americans and other visa-exempt non-EU citizens visiting European destinations." It's an electronic travel authorization for visa-free countries, and it has a faster application and processing time than a visa.

In other words, U.S. citizens won't need a visa to continue traveling to Europe—but they must apply for ETIAS.

If you meet the ETIAS requirements, you won't need a visa if you're traveling for up to 90 days in any 180-day period for business, short-term study or tourism. If you currently hold a passport or will soon apply for a passport from one of 59 travel-visa-free countries and are between the ages of 18 and 70, you will need the new travel authorization for European travel within the Schengen area (a travel zone made up of 27 European countries).

Why are these European requirements changing?

The European Union is changing its requirements to include ETIAS to benefit both travelers and the European Union. When traveling overseas to Europe using ETIAS, you'll benefit from a more streamlined border crossing—the new travel authorization will get you through faster.

But the launch of the electronic authorization system aims to keep the European Union safer too. Better border management means officials can keep an eye on security issues at the borders. And because ETIAS links to security databases, it'll be easier to fight terrorism and criminal activity.

When will ETIAS go into effect?

The current launch date for ETIAS in Europe is sometime in January 2024. But that comes after some delays. The European Union initially intended ETIAS to go into effect in January 2021 but later postponed the kickoff to 2023. The quiet pushback of the launch date, following a series of hiccups, has led up to its slated release in 2024, but some sources note that it may take a while for it to go into effect.

Per the ETIAS website, "after the initial launch, there may be a short period of three to six months where ETIAS may not be mandatory for travel. This is to allow the EU to work through any system issues, which may negatively impact travelers due to complications with the initial rollout." Additionally, the site notes that this is "barring any delay in implementation," so it's unclear whether the 2024 launch date is set in stone.

Still, if you're planning a romantic European vacation and want to skip the new system, you'll have to travel soon.

What countries will require authorization?

Gearing up for some European country-hopping ? These 23 European countries in the Schengen area will require ETIAS authorization from American travelers:

• Czech Republic
• Netherlands

You will also need ETIAS for four non-EU member states:

• Liechtenstein
• Switzerland

Additionally, these non-Schengen EU states will require ETIAS:

Finally, these microstates will also require the new travel authorization:

• Vatican City

What's the difference between ETIAS and EES?

The European Union is launching not only ETIAS but also a border-management strategy called the Entry/Exist System (EES). The first thing to know: ETIAS and EES are not the same thing.

For starters, ETIAS is a new entry requirement, while EES is a registration. When traveling visa free, you'll need to apply for ETIAS travel authorization, but you won't need to take any action before your trip for EES registration. Instead, this is done automatically at the external border of any of the 29 European countries using EES, and this registration will take place each time you cross an external border between countries. EES will also replace manual passport stamps.

How much does ETIAS cost?

Luckily, if you're traveling on a budget , the application fee for ETIAS won't break the bank—it's less than $10. Travelers will pay $8 for ETIAS (or €7).

How do you apply for ETIAS?

Applying for ETIAS online is a relatively simple process. You'll fill out the electronic form with personal information, such as your first and last name, nationality, place of birth, address, phone number and email. You'll also need to include your passport information , your travel plans and your history of travel, and you'll have to answer security-based questions. From there, you'll pay the fee and submit your application.

It's important to avoid scam websites pretending to be ETIAS. Make sure you apply on the official site using this application .

Overall, the application process should take about 10 minutes, while approval for your travel authorization will take 96 hours or fewer. You'll know your application has been approved when you receive an official confirmation email.

How long does an ETIAS authorization last?

Once you've received your ETIAS authorization, it will remain valid for three years from the issue date. You may use it to travel multiple times as long as your travel documents have not expired.

How often do you need to renew/reapply?

You will need to reapply for ETIAS when your previous travel permit has expired, which will happen three years after your application date. If your passport expires sooner, you will need to get a new passport and reapply for ETIAS.

Solar eclipse maps show 2024 totality path, peak times and how much of the eclipse people could see across the U.S.

A total solar eclipse  crossed North America Monday with parts of 15 U.S. states within the path of totality. Maps show  where and when astronomy fans could see the big event  as skies darkened in the middle of the day Monday, April 8.

The total eclipse first appeared along Mexico's Pacific Coast at around 11:07 a.m. PDT, then traveled across a swath of the U.S., from Texas to Maine, and into Canada.

About 31.6 million people live in the path of totality , the area where the moon fully blocked out the sun , according to NASA. The path ranged between 108 and 122 miles wide. An additional 150 million people live within 200 miles of the path of totality.

The total solar eclipse started over the Pacific Ocean, and the first location in continental North America that experienced totality was Mexico's Pacific Coast, around 11:07 a.m. PDT, according to NASA. From there, the path continued into Texas, crossing more than a dozen states before the eclipse enters Canada in southern Ontario. The eclipse exited continental North America at around 5:16 p.m. NDT from Newfoundland, Canada.

The path of totality included portions of the following states:

• Pennsylvania
• New Hampshire

Small parts of Tennessee and Michigan also experienced the total solar eclipse.

Several major cities across the U.S. were included in the eclipse's path of totality, while many others saw a partial eclipse. These were some of the best major cities for eclipse viewing — though the weather was a factor :

• San Antonio, Texas (partially under the path)
• Austin, Texas
• Waco, Texas
• Dallas, Texas
• Little Rock, Arkansas
• Indianapolis, Indiana
• Dayton, Ohio
• Cleveland, Ohio
• Buffalo, New York
• Rochester, New York
• Syracuse, New York
• Burlington, Vermont

The eclipse began in the U.S. as a partial eclipse beginning at 12:06 p.m. CDT near Eagle Pass, Texas, before progressing to totality by about 1:27 p.m. CDT and then moving along its path to the northeast over the following few hours.

NASA shared times for several cities in the path of totality across the U.S. People could have also  checked their ZIP code on NASA's map  to see when the eclipse was to reach them if they were on, or near, the path of totality — or if they saw a partial eclipse instead.

How much of the eclipse did people see if they live outside the totality path?

While the April 8 eclipse covered a wide swath of the U.S., outside the path of totality observers may have spotted a partial eclipse, where the moon covers some, but not all, of the sun, according to NASA. The closer they were to the path of totality, the larger the portion of the sun that was hidden.

NASA allowed viewers to input a ZIP code and see how much of the sun was to be covered in their locations.

Could there be cloud cover be during the solar eclipse?

Some areas along the path of totality had a higher likelihood of cloud cover that could interfere with viewing the eclipse. Here is a map showing the historical trends in cloud cover this time of year.

Where did the solar eclipse reach totality for the longest?

Eclipse viewers near Torreón, Mexico, got to experience totality for the longest. Totality there lasted 4 minutes, 28 seconds, according to NASA. 

Most places along the centerline of the path of totality saw a totality duration of between 3.5 and 4 minutes, according to NASA. Some places in the U.S. came close to the maximum; Kerrville, Texas, had a totality duration of 4 minutes, 24 seconds.

What is the path of totality for the 2044 solar eclipse?

The next total solar eclipse that will be visible from the contiguous U.S. will be on Aug. 23, 2044.

Astronomy fans in the U.S. will have far fewer opportunities to see the 2044 eclipse they had on April 8. NASA has not yet made maps available for the 2044 eclipse but, according to The Planetary Society , the path of totality will only touch three states.

The 2024 eclipse will start in Greenland, pass over Canada and end as the sun sets in Montana, North Dakota and South Dakota, according to the Planetary Society.

The highly anticipated 2024 total solar eclipse will cross North America on Monday , giving millions of sky-gazers the chance to see a rare cosmic event that won't be viewable again for 20 years.

The eclipse's  path of totality  will travel over a portion of northern Mexico before entering the U.S. It then it will cross 13 states  from Texas to Maine, where the spectacle is expected to attract huge crowds.

If you aren't lucky enough to be in the path of totality this time around, you will have another chance - you'll just have to wait until the 2040s.

When is the next total solar eclipse visible from the U.S.?

It will be 20 years before there's a chance to  witness a total solar eclipse  in the United States again.

According to NASA, after Monday's total solar  eclipse , the next one viewable from the contiguous U.S. will be on Aug. 23, 2044.

Unfortunately, the 2044 total  solar eclipse  won't have the broad reach across the U.S. as the 2024 eclipse.

The path of totality during the 2044 eclipse will only touch three states, according to the Planetary Society, a nonprofit involved in research, public outreach, and political space advocacy.

The eclipse will begin in Greenland, sweep through Canada and end around sunset in Montana, North Dakota and South Dakota.

2045 solar eclipse

While the 2044 total eclipse will only touch three states, a 2045 eclipse will have a more robust path across the U.S.

Expected to occur on Saturday, Aug. 12, 2045, this solar eclipse will trace a path of totality over California, Nevada, Utah, Colorado, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Kansas, Texas, Arkansas, Missouri, Mississippi, Louisiana, Alabama, Florida, and Georgia.

A partial solar eclipse will also be viewable in 35 other states, according to National Eclipse.com

What is a total solar eclipse?

Any celestial object like a moon or a planet that passes between two other bodies can create  an eclipse  by obscuring the view of objects like the sun.

In the event of a solar eclipse, the moon comes in between the Earth and the sun, blocking its light from reaching a small part of our planet. Partial eclipses, when some part of the sun remains visible, are the most common, making total eclipses a rare sight to behold.

Total eclipses can lead to a period of darkness lasting for several minutes, during which time nocturnal animals stir while confused birds and insects may fall silent, NASA says.

When a solar eclipse reaches totality, people are able to see the sun’s outer atmosphere called the corona, which is usually obscured by the sun's bright surface. This offers scientists an uncommon opportunity  to study the corona .

Totality also offers spectators a chance to gaze upon the spectacular sight with the naked eye, though  proper  safety  glasses  are still required for the rest of the time.

What states are on the 2024 eclipse path of totality?

Mexico's Pacific coast will be the first location in continental North America to experience totality, which is expected to occur at about 11:07 a.m. PDT,  according to NASA .

As the moon's shadow will northeast, totality in the U.S. will begin in Texas at 1:27 p.m. CDT. The path will then cut diagonally across the country, traveling through Oklahoma, Arkansas, Missouri, Illinois, Kentucky, Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York, Vermont and New Hampshire.

The eclipse's path is expected to end in Maine at 3:35 p.m. EDT before visiting the maritime provinces of Canada, according to estimates.
