M72 2023 highlights: Metallica break attendance record at SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles
Posted by Zenae Zukowski on August 29, 2023
Metallica made history with their no-repeat weekend shows at Los Angeles’ SoFi Stadium this past weekend. Drawing an astounding total of nearly 80,000 fans, marking the largest crowd recorded at the Los Angeles stadium since its opening in September 2020. Part of the M72 world tour, the first concert on Friday, August 25, was graced by the presence of Hollywood stars and musicians. John Travolta, Jason Momoa, Adria Arjona, and Tom Sandoval from “Vanderpump Rules” were notable attendees on the first of two nights of the M72LA events. The support further charged the atmosphere with Pantera and Mammoth WVH, setting the stage for a momentous evening. Sunday’s show (27) saw Five Finger Death Punch and Ice Nine Kills take up the opening duties.
Backstage action added an extra layer of excitement. Pantera drummer Charlie Benante shared his experience from the previous night, recounting humorous moments with John Travolta and expressing admiration for Jason Momoa’s enthusiastic participation in the mosh pit. Benante also praised the energy of the crowd and the performance itself. However, the weekend did experience a change in the lineup. Five Finger Death Punch’s Ivan Moody, unfortunately, fell ill with a severe flu and couldn’t perform on Sunday night. This unexpected turn led to an impressive lineup shuffle, with Phil Labonte (All That Remains), Howard Jones (ex-Killswitch Engage, Light The Torch), and AJ Channer (Fire From The Gods) stepping in behind the microphones. The band assured fans that Ivan Moody would soon return to the stage. Metallica’s SoFi Stadium concerts are one for the books with special appearances and unexpected twists, highlighting more notorious moments on the North American portion of the M72 World Tour.

Metallica debuts ‘Lux Æterna’ from ’72 Seasons’ album, along with massive world tour

Metallica is gearing up for a very busy two years.
The heavy-metal band on Monday released its first new track in six years — making good on drummer Lars Ulrich’s promise not to make fans wait another eight years to hear new music. The throwback-styled “Lux Æterna” returns to Metallica’s classic thrash-metal sound. It hails from Metallica’s upcoming 12th studio album “72 Seasons,” which drops on April 14.
The band also released the song’s Tim Saccenti-directed music video on Monday, along with details about the album’s accompanying M72 world tour featuring two-night stops in nearly two dozen cities.
After launching in Amsterdam on April 27, the 46-show tour will make its way to Southern California in August for two shows at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood.
The band has dubbed the tour stops “no repeat weekends” and also has shows all over Europe and North America through 2024. Opening acts Pantera and Mammoth WVH will play the Aug. 25 show at SoFi and Five Finger Death Punch and Ice Nine Kills will perform at the Aug. 27 concert. The Architects, Volbeat and Greta Van Fleet have been tapped for other dates on the tour.
“Starting in April of 2023, we’ll be visiting 22 different cities around the world and playing two nights in each city, with each ‘No Repeat Weekend’ show a completely unique experience: Two totally different set lists with two different bands opening the show each night!” the band announced Monday.
“Purchase a two-day ticket, and you won’t see the same song twice for a total of over 30 songs spanning our 40+ years of being lucky enough to make music. Most of the shows (sorry, not all — we tried!) will be on Fridays and Sundays, so we’ll be sure to have lots of extracurricular events for you to hang with fellow Metallica fans at before the shows kick-off and on the Saturday night in between.”
Pre-sales for the tour begin Wednesday.
‘Master of Puppets’ got some ‘Stranger Things’ love. Now Metallica returns the favor
Metallica has a few things to say about ‘Stranger Things’ using ‘Master of Puppets’ in Season 4’s finale. Don’t worry — it’s not the end of the world.
July 5, 2022
Meanwhile, Metallica’s new “72 Seasons” album, which contains 12 tracks, was produced by Ulrich, Greg Fidelman and James Hetfield and got its title from the 72 seasons that comprise the first 18 years of a person’s life, the band said.
“72 seasons. The first 18 years of our lives that form our true or false selves. The concept that we were told ‘who we are’ by our parents. A possible pigeonholing around what kind of personality we are,” guitarist Hetfield explained. I think the most interesting part of this is the continued study of those core beliefs and how it affects our perception of the world today. Much of our adult experience is reenactment or reaction to these childhood experiences. Prisoners of childhood or breaking free of those bondages we carry.”
The new album comes six years after the band’s 2016 outing “ Hardwired … to Self-Destruct ,” which came a long eight years after 2008’s “Death Magnetic.” While Metallica also reissued classics and recorded live albums in that time, the band notably climbed the Billboard songs chart this summer with its 1986 song “Master of Puppets” after it was featured in the Season 4 finale of Netflix’s “Stranger Things.” `
Before launching the tour, Metallica will play a concert benefiting its All Within My Hands Foundation on Dec. 16 in downtown Los Angeles.

July 11, 2019
The third annual “Metallica Presents: The Helping Hands Concert,” hosted by late-night comic Jimmy Kimmel, will take place at Microsoft Theater in downtown.
Guest Greta Van Fleet will open the show and Paramount+ will livestream the event at 5:30 p.m. Pacific time. It will also be simulcast on Pluto TV globally and on YouTube.

Metallica Brings 72 Seasons To The Stage: Photos + Recap
by Alex Kluft
Over the last 40 years, Metallica have become one of the best selling metal bands in the world, garnering an impressive amount of ticket sales for each tour. With their 2023 album, 72 Seasons , the California group has cemented their status as not just a legacy act, but a band still capable of honing and expanding their sound. For their ongoing “M72” tour , Metallica stopped at Sofi Stadium in Inglewood, California on August 25th and August 27th. For the first night, Mammoth WVH and Pantera opened, and on the second night it was Ice Nine Kills and Five Finger Death Punch.
72 Seasons was the band’s first album since 2016’s Hardwired…To Self Destruct , and was well represented in both of the band’s sets. With the stage being in the round but also containing a standing pit in the middle, there were microphones placed all around the stadium; Drummer Lars Ulrich , who is no stranger to innovative stage setups, had four rotating drum kits that were air-lifted throughout the show.
For the second night, Metallica’s set kicked off with “Whiplash,” following with “For Whom the Bell Tolls” and “Ride the Lightning.” Ulrich executed his usual leap during the raucous opening moments of “For Whom the Bell Tolls,” and brought full force on “Lux Aeterna.” For this performance, Metallica spread out their older hits in the beginning and ending phases of the show, including “Wherever I May Roam,” “Moth Into Flame,” “Fight Fire With Fire,” “Whiskey in the Jar,” “One,” and “Enter Sandman.”
See photos of both Metallica shows at SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles, California on August 25th and 27th.

Music | live map: where it’s raining in the bay area, subscriber only, music | review: metallica’s james hetfield says he ‘couldn’t have dreamt this’, metallica wows fans during night 1 at sofi stadium.
James Hetfield stood before nearly 80,000 fans surrounding him on all sides at SoFi Stadium, and seemed utterly in awe of the situation.
“I couldn’t have dreamt this,” the Metallica vocalist-guitarist remarked.
The triumphant scene Friday was indeed the stuff of dreams, both for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame act and the legions of fans who filled the mammoth Los Angeles venue to capacity for the first of two sold-out Metallica shows. The group returns to SoFi on Sunday to complete the SoCal stand of Metallica’s M72 World Tour, which supports the group’s 11th studio outing, this year’s “72 Seasons.”
The concert was a homecoming show of sorts for the band, which formed back in 1981 in Los Angeles. Of course, Metallica is mostly — and correctly — thought of as being a Bay Area act, since it has spent most of its career living and working in the shadow of the Golden Gate Bridge.
Unfortunately, Metallica — for reasons that absolutely perplex most Northern California fans — doesn’t currently have a Bay Area date on its lengthy two-year tour itinerary. (Although, I think that will change and we will see Metallica rocking some local dates in 2024.)
A healthy contingent of Bay Area fans did journey down to SoFi, getting the chance to enjoy the band’s two-hour, 17-song performance on Night 1 with other supporters who had traveled both near and far.
The legendary metal quartet — which also includes drummer Lars Ulrich, guitarist Kirk Hammett and bassist Robert Trujillo — kicked off the evening with an utterly ferocious version of “Creeping Death,” one that proved beyond a shadow of a doubt that, 40-plus years into the game, Metallica is as mighty as ever.
The muscular, full-throttle opener was one of the two biggest highlights of the night. The other also hailed from Metallica’s second album, 1984’s genre-defining “Ride the Lightning,” as the group roared through a regal version of “Fade to Black” that once again illustrated why Hammett deserves to be ranked among the greatest rock guitarists of all time.
In between those two towering achievements Friday, Metallica mixed older and newer cuts, going from longtime fan favorites “Harvester of Sorrow” and “The Memory Remains” to a pair of “72 Seasons” cuts, “Lux Æterna” and “Too Far Gone?”
“You guys better look out because Metallica is in a really good mood,” Hetfield told the crowd early in the night. “We came here to kick your (expletive).”
The group pursued that endeavor with gusto, rampaging its way through such metal gems as “Sad but True” and “Hardwired” as fans moshed about on the stadium floor and chanted along to the lyrics from all around this amazing venue.
The band worked its magic from a huge stage erected in the middle of the stadium’s floor. The relatively low-frills stage was hollow in the middle — except for the fans that filled in the hole to get incredibly close-up views — and really resembled a kind of circular catwalk. The musicians, including Ulrich and his kit, moved about the stage throughout the evening, allowing for ticketholders in different spots of the stadium to get better looks at what was going on. There were eight towers, topped with circular video screens, which were especially useful to those seated in the upper reaches of the venue.
Metallica was really firing on all cylinders as it reached the homestretch, powering through three of its all-time greatest tunes — “Fuel,” “Seek and Destroy” and, finally, “Master of Puppets” — to close the concert.
Fans will be back on Sunday, expecting to hear a completely different setlist on Night 2 of the SoFi stand.
Pantera and Mammoth WVH served as the opening acts on Friday, while Five Finger Death Punch and Ice Nine Kills set the table on Sunday.
Setlist: 1. “Creeping Death” 2. “Harvester of Sorrow” 3. “Leper Messiah” 4. “The Memory Remains” 5. “Lux Æterna” 6. “Too Far Gone?” 7. “Rose Avenue” 8. “Fade to Black” 9. “Shadows Follow” 10. “Orion” 11. “Nothing Else Matters” 12. “Sad but True” 13. “The Day That Never Comes” 14. “Hardwired” 15. “Fuel” 16. “Seek & Destroy” 17. “Master of Puppets”
