AVENUE Q is the laugh-out-loud musical that follows a bright-eyed college graduate named Princeton. When he arrives in The Big Apple with big dreams and a tiny bank account, he moves into a shabby apartment all the way out on AVENUE Q. Still, the neighbours seem nice. There, he meets Kate (the monster next door), Rod (the Republican), Trekkie (an aficionado of all things internet), and many other (legally distinct from the Muppets) new friends! Together, they struggle to find jobs, dates, and their ever-elusive purpose in life.

Avenue Q to return for a new UK tour

Comedy musical Avenue Q will hit the road again next year when it begins a new tour of UK venues, opening at Portsmouth’s Kings Theatre on 21st January.

Following five years in the West End, sell-out runs worldwide and tours in 2014, 2015 and 2016, the Tony Award-winning musical is created by Jeff Marx and Robert Lopez, co-creator of Book of Mormon and writer of the songs for Disney’s Frozen .

Puppets bring New York to life Avenue Q, made up of a cast of 11 performers and puppets, follows the characters on a downtown New York street, all trying to make sense of life’s burning issues.

Princeton is a bright-eyed graduate who comes to New York City with big dreams and a tiny bank account. Brian is an out-of-work comedian. Nicky is a good-hearted slacker, and Kate Monster is a kindergarten teacher. And audiences will watch as each deal with all of life’s little obstacles, accompanied by some hilarious songs.

Where’s the new tour going?

The 2019 circuit will open in January and run until July. Birmingham, Dartford, Basildon, Derby, Bradford, and Canterbury are amongst those cities due to host the show, as are Cheltenham, Ipswich, Brighton, Wolverhampton, Cardiff, Glasgow and Sheffield.

Further dates are to be announced, as is casting.

Extra information

Avenue Q first opened Off-Broadway at the Vineyard Theatre in 2003, before transferring to Broadway later that year where it won three Tony Awards for Best Musical, Best Score and Best Book.

In 2006 it transferred to the West End where it ran for five years before touring the UK. It has appeared in more than ten countries all over the world.

The musical is produced by Selladoor Worldwide; directed and choreographed by Cressida Carré; and designed by Richard Evans. The puppets are designed by Paul Jomain of Q Puppets with puppet coaching by Nigel Plaskitt.

Who is AVENUE Q appropriate for? Adults love AVENUE Q, but they seem a little, er, fuzzy on whether it's appropriate for kids. We'll try to clear that up. AVENUE Q is great for teenagers because it's about real life. It may not be appropriate for young children because AVENUE Q addresses issues like sex, drinking, and surfing the web for porn. It's hard to say what exact age is right to see AVENUE Q - parents should use their discretion based on the maturity level of their children. But we promise you this - if you DO bring your teenagers to AVENUE Q, they'll think you're really cool.

I'm planning on performing "Purpose" this year at Districts, and hopefully either "I Wish I Could Go Back To College" or "For Now" next year. Can I perform them?
