Georgetown University admits qualified students of any age, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, race, color, disability status, religion, citizenship, immigration status, and national and ethnic origin to all the rights, privileges, programs, and activities generally accorded or made available to students at the school. It does not discriminate on the basis of age, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, race, disability status, color, religion, citizenship, immigration status, or national and ethnic origin in administration of its educational policies, admission policies, scholarship and loan programs, and athletic and other school administered programs.

1. High School Preparation

While the Committee on Admissions is most interested in the quality of a student’s work, general promise, and seriousness of purpose, it is recommended that secondary school preparation include four years of English, a minimum of two years of social studies, modern language, and mathematics and one year of natural science. Students who plan a concentration in mathematics or science should include four years of mathematics and at least three years of science. Candidates for the majors in the School of Nursing and the School of Health should include at least three years of mathematics and must include one year each of biology and chemistry. Students interested in the McDonough School of Business should complete a minimum of three years of mathematics, through advanced algebra and trigonometry, as calculus is required of all students in the program. Two years of natural science are recommended. Students interested in the Faculty of Languages and Linguistics or the Walsh School of Foreign Service are recommended to have a background in a modern foreign language or Latin.

2. Standardized Tests

All applicants are required to take the SAT or the ACT. Both tests are acceptable, and on neither test will a Writing component be utilized in admissions decisions. All tests should be taken by January of the senior year in order to allow time for the results to reach Georgetown by early February. We continue to recommend that students who have A.P. (Advanced Placement) scores submit them to supplement their admissions file.

The University requires that all scores from standardized tests be submitted directly from the testing agency; please indicate Georgetown’s code number when requesting score reports (SAT code 5244; ACT code 0668).

It is important to note that, while objective test results provide important information about candidates, the Committee on Admissions is far more concerned with school record, academic program, and rank in class than with test scores. There are no cut-off scores.

3. Application Procedure

All first-year student applications are due in the Office of Undergraduate Admissions by November 1 for Early Action and January 10 for Regular Decision. These applications should contain the results of three and one half years of high school work. A complete application should include:

  • Georgetown Application for First-Year Admission
  • Georgetown Application Supplement
  • Secondary School Report (including transcript and counselor recommendation)
  • Teacher Recommendation
  • Nonrefundable Application Fee
  • Results of the SAT examination or the ACT sent directly from the testing service
  • No application will be considered until all of the above credentials have been received. A notice of missing credentials will be sent via e-mail, but students should make every effort to ensure credentials are submitted on time.
  • Students seeking financial assistance should submit a copy of the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and the CSS PROFILE (administered by the College Board). Financial need is considered separately from the application for admission.

4. Early Action

The Early Action program is designed to enable superior students to learn of their admission early in their senior year. Students offered admission at Early Action are those whom the Admissions Committee members feel confident would be admitted at Regular Decision. Georgetown’s Early Action program is grounded in the belief that students should be free to choose among colleges until the Candidates Reply Date, May 1. Accordingly, accepted students will have the same reply date (May 1) as all candidates.

In keeping with this principle, students applying under the Early Action program may not apply at the same time to binding Early Decision programs since they would not be free to choose Georgetown if admitted. Students are welcome to apply to other Early Action programs or other Regular Decision programs while at the same time applying to Georgetown’s Early Action program. No candidates are denied admission during the Early Action review. Candidates not accepted under the Early Action program are deferred to the regular review. Deferred Early Action candidates are given the same full and fair consideration as Regular Decision candidates.

Applicants for Early Action must indicate their interest in being considered for this program in the space provided on the application form. The admissions application and all credentials for Early Action must be received at Georgetown by November 1. Please note that the Early Action review is based on information from first, sophomore, and junior years, so it is not necessary to rush SAT Subject Test results to the Office of Undergraduate Admissions. Fall scores will be added to an applicant’s file if the student is deferred to the Regular Decision review. Early Action decisions will be announced December 15.

5. Campus Visits

Students interested in Georgetown are encouraged to visit the University. A  campus visit  will provide prospective students with a clearer understanding of Georgetown’s educational programs, environment, and social setting.

Information sessions, conducted by members of the Admissions staff, offer prospective students and their parents an opportunity to learn more about the academic programs and student life at Georgetown, as well as the admissions process and procedures. Information sessions and tours are held on weekdays and Saturday mornings throughout the year on a variable schedule. Please contact the Office of Undergraduate Admissions at (202) 687-3600.

6. Interviews

Another important part of the selection process at Georgetown is an interview with a member of an Alumni Admissions Program committee which are located in all fifty states and in many foreign countries. As applications are received by the Office of Undergraduate Admissions, each student who lives or attends boarding school within a committee’s jurisdiction is provided with the name of an alumni interviewer and asked to make arrangements for an interview. This interview provides candidates an opportunity to highlight particular aspects of their background and achievements which they would like to call to the attention of the Admissions Committee, as well as to learn more about the University from the point of view of the local alumnus.

7. Deferred Enrollment

Georgetown has a policy of allowing admitted first-year students to defer their enrollment until the following year. Further details can be obtained from the  Office of Undergraduate Admissions . Transfer students may not defer admission.

8. Transfer Students

Georgetown welcomes transfer applications to its undergraduate programs. Transfer applicants should have completed one full-time semester of at least twelve transferable credits, or the equivalent, on the college level; otherwise they should follow the first-year student application procedure. Students who have already earned a bachelor’s degree at another college or university are not eligible for admission to Georgetown’s undergraduate degree programs. Students who have an undergraduate degree are welcome, however, to apply to take courses at the undergraduate level as a special non-degree student either through the School of Continuing Studies or one of the five undergraduate schools according to the relevant policies of the school.

Transfer students admitted for the fall term, may begin studies during the summer term if they wish. Credit toward Georgetown degrees may be given for work done at other accredited institutions subject to the following limitations:

  • Credit for required courses will be given if the course is similar to the one required at Georgetown.
  • Credit for electives will be given if the course is similar to courses offered at Georgetown. Credit for courses not offered at Georgetown will be considered on an individual basis.
  • Grades earned must be at least one level above minimum passing level, e.g., C. Passing grades on a Pass/Fail system are acceptable if defined as C or better.
  • The maximum number of transferable credits is one-half of the total required for the degree. Students must spend a minimum of four full semesters in residence at Georgetown to earn a degree. Summer sessions will not count toward fulfilling the residency requirement.  Work completed on semester study abroad will not count toward fulfilling the academic residency requirement unless completed at one of Georgetown’s Global Living and Learning Communities or at SFS-Qatar. These programs count toward academic residency requirements.

An evaluation of courses accepted for transfer will be sent with or shortly after the notification of acceptance. The following materials should be submitted no later than March 1:

  • Georgetown Transfer Application
  • Georgetown Transfer Application Supplement
  • Secondary School Report, to include high school transcript
  • SAT/ACT results (Waived only for applicants who graduated from high school five or more years prior to intended matriculation at Georgetown)
  • Official college transcripts from current institution and any previously attended institution(s)
  • A list of the courses planned for the term(s) not included in the current transcript
  • Dean’s Report from current college/university
  • Professor’s Report from a professor preferably in major area of study

Applications will be reviewed as soon as possible after these materials have been received and admissions decisions will be sent June 1. In some cases it will be necessary to wait for the final transcript before a decision can be reached. Students who are offered admission by June 1 will be expected to confirm their enrollment by June 15.

9. Transferring Undergraduate School within the University

Since the five undergraduate schools are distinct colleges under the jurisdiction of separate deans, a student wishing to transfer within the University must make an application in writing to the school to which he or she wishes to transfer. Each undergraduate school establishes its own admission standards for students. Students considering a change in program should consult with their undergraduate advising deans to learn about deadlines and procedures. Students who switch programs should expect to complete all of the degree requirements of the undergraduate school to which they transfer.

10. International Students

Georgetown welcomes applications for admission from well-qualified international students. Deadline dates are the same as those established for students applying from within the United States. Please note that the application fee must be in U.S. dollars.

Along with final application forms, students should submit complete, translated, and  official transcripts of all secondary and, when applicable, university credentials along with subjective evaluations from teachers and tutors when obtainable. Similarly, students applying from countries offering Matriculation Examinations must submit results of such examinations as soon as results are available. These credentials will be considered for admission as well as for placement at the proper level when the application file is complete.

All candidates studying in non-U.S. educational systems whose native language is not English are required to demonstrate a level of competence that would indicate their ability for successful study in English. It is recommended that such students submit results from the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL), including the Test of Written English (TWE), given at test centers throughout the world. International applicants  are required  to take the Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) or the American College Testing Program (ACT) examination. These tests are available in virtually every foreign country, and should be taken prior to January 1 to allow the results to be sent to the Office of Undergraduate Admissions in time for review. Complete information for International Students is available from the Office of Undergraduate Admissions .

11. Visiting Student Program

Due to limitations of space, Georgetown is only able to offer admission to a limited number of students via our Visiting (non-degree) Student Program. Applications must be approved by the dean of the school in which the student wishes to study. Admission for the Visiting Student Program is for one semester.

Application forms may be obtained from the Office of Undergraduate Admissions website. Completed applications (including transcripts and application fee) must be submitted by November 15 for admission in January, and by July 15 for admission in September.  No applications will be accepted after these dates.  Final decisions will be made by August 10 for the fall semester and by December 20 for the spring semester.

Students who are earning degrees at schools other than Georgetown and who wish to attend Georgetown as Visiting Students must include with their application materials a letter from the current dean approving the courses to be taken at Georgetown. Such students are expected to attend full time in the school to which they are applying at Georgetown.

Approval for Visiting Student status does not mean automatic acceptance into the courses requested and approved. Enrollment in specific courses is determined on a space-available basis only. Visiting Students are ineligible for financial aid; campus housing may be available but is not guaranteed.

12. Immunization Requirements

Mandatory immunizations and health screenings are based on District of Columbia Law as well as guidance from the CDC and the American College Health Association. Requirements vary based on a student’s age, history, and course of study. Student specific requirements can be found within their account in the GU Immunization and Health Information Database Portal. Students must submit all required information and documentation electronically through this portal upon matriculation. Required immunization and testing information must be entered into the Georgetown immunization database portal, at https://georgetown.studenthealthportal.com with accompanying verification signed by a health care provider. The deadline for incoming fall semester students to enter this information is September 1 (December 15 for students entering in the spring semester). Failure to meet this deadline may result in a penalty fee and prevent students from registering for classes.  If, after reviewing the immunization requirements, you or your health care provider have questions, please contact the Georgetown Student Health center through a secure message in the immunization database portal or by calling the Student Health Center immunization line at 202-687-3100.

The History of Georgetown Law

Georgetown University Law Center (GULC) began modestly in 1870 when the Directors of Georgetown University recommended the establishment of a separate department to train lawyers. It was the first law school established in the United States by a Jesuit institution of higher learning.

In the fall of 1870, with high expectations and tenuous financial structure, Georgetown’s law school enrolled 25 students from 12 states and Cuba. The course of study required two years of evening classes. Though the law school weathered heavy financial storms and other worrisome problems common to new schools, the vision of its early leaders, the reputation of the law school’s faculty members, and the record of the school’s first graduates enhanced the school’s reputation. In 1890, construction began on a new law school building at 506 E Street, N.W., which had the remarkable capacity of 600 students.

After 80 years in its Victorian quarters on E Street, the Law Center moved to 600 New Jersey Avenue and the original Bernard P. McDonough Hall. The Edward Bennett Williams Law Library was built in 1989. The 1993 dedication of the Bernard S. and Sarah M. Gewirz Student Center added a residential component to the campus, as well as a fitness center and child care center. The expansion of McDonough Hall, dedicated in the spring of 1997, completes the three building Law Center campus.

While once a rudimentary handful of courses embracing the barest fundamentals of legal practice, the curriculum is now as broad and diverse as any offered in the country with over 400 courses and seminars. It includes the nation’s largest clinical program, as well as joint degree programs in law, business, foreign service (international relations), public health, philosophy, government, and a special program for Public Interest Law Scholars. Although the approximately 80 percent of the students study full-time for their J.D. degree, the Law Center has retained the historical evening division with its outstanding reputation for the academic strength of its students and curriculum.

Experience Georgetown

Welcome to Georgetown University! Founded in 1789, Georgetown is the nation’s oldest Catholic and Jesuit college. Overlooking the Potomac River and the city of Washington, DC, it is certainly easy to understand why Georgetown’s early students often referred to the University as The Hilltop . Part of experiencing The Hilltop, however, transcends the traditional information session and campus tour . In this vein, our hope is to provide you with a complete campus experience as seen through the eyes of students. Whether navigating the Georgetown neighborhood, sampling the many restaurants in the area, or taking in historical sites, Georgetown University is far more than the world within our front gates.

Getting to The Hilltop

Given the traffic and congestion of the Georgetown area, we strongly encourage visitors to utilize public transportation. For those arriving by car, we recommend several parking garages in the Georgetown neighborhood, as the University itself has very limited parking. Please view Directions to Campus page for more detailed information.

Exploring the Campus

We encourage all prospective students to participate in our information sessions and tours. Information sessions are led by members of the admissions staff and provide ample time for you to learn about the admissions process in detail. Sessions are followed by a student-led tour. Please view Information Sessions and Tours page for more detailed information.

Exploring the Georgetown Neighborhood

georgetown campus tour

The campus is nestled in the Georgetown historic neighborhood of Washington, DC. The experience of a Georgetown students seamlessly merge two worlds: the University campus, and the Georgetown neighborhood. We strongly emphasize that prospective students should explore both the campus and the surrounding neighborhood to better obtain a full understanding of the day-to-day life of a Georgetown student. The charming “village” of Georgetown, twelve square blocks in size, retains the spirit of the colonial town in which the University was founded more than two centuries ago. The immediate neighborhood boasts federal-style townhouses and cobblestone, tree-lined streets leading to the intersection of M St. and Wisconsin Ave., which represent the heart of the Georgetown neighborhood.

Experiencing the Nation’s Capital

No visit to the Hilltop would be complete without exploring the dynamic and bustling city of Washington, D.C. The university rests in close proximity to the White House, Congress, the Supreme Court as well as major theaters, concert halls and museums. In addition to attracting notable guest speakers, Georgetown provides unparalleled access to internship programs across multiple sectors, a wide variety of cultural events, and all that DC has to offer.

While at Georgetown, students develop a more thorough understanding of themselves and of the world around them, not simply a set of professional skills. This is evident in the achievements of distinguished alumni , including many ambassadors, numerous members of Congress, a current Supreme Court justice, and one former U.S. president. To be part of the academic experience at Georgetown is to join a multifaceted dialogue focused on intellectual, personal and spiritual growth.

Below are links to five different categories of activities, all of which will give you a strong picture of the typical experience of a Georgetown student and their favorite places to eat, shop, and explore.

Title: I Interned in Nancy Pelosi’s Office. This is How You Can Land a Hillternship.

This story is a part of the  Student Life Blog , which is primarily produced by the students behind  Georgetown Stories , a series that follows a group of students throughout the academic year at Georgetown as they share their experiences with past, present and future Hoyas.

One of the best things about Georgetown is how close it is to Capitol Hill. The Hill is a 15-minute car ride or a 40-minute metro from campus, a relatively easy commute for students who want an internship on the Hill, called Hillternships!

Interning on the Hill is a must-do because it is an accessible and eye-opening experience to see if a career in government and politics, particularly on the Hill, is the right fit for you. Plus, it is an incredible experience — you will have a lot of fun!

georgetown campus tour

I knew I wanted to do a Hillternship sometime during my four years. I started cluelessly applying for opportunities in my freshman spring, and after consulting upperclassmen, I started getting interviews for internships in the fall. Being in DC means Georgetown students can intern not only in the summer but also during the school year. After a few interviews, I got an offer to intern in the office of Speaker Emerita Nancy Pelosi (H’02) this past fall.

I had an incredible time on the Hill, and it was the best internship I have had because of the people I met and the things I experienced. A few of my highlights included going on the U.S. Capitol dome tour, watching the election of Speaker Mike Johnson and getting breakfast with Speaker Pelosi.

My typical work included answering phone calls, opening and sending out mail, reading and gathering daily news reports, and taking notes on hearings. While the technical skills you learn are not extensive, the experiences and memories were absolutely worth it.

georgetown campus tour

If this sounds like something you are interested in, I have some tips and tricks to help you get a Hillternship!

7 Need-to-Know Tips to Land an Internship on Capitol Hill

Research the type of internships available.

There are Senate and House of Representative internships. In both, there are leadership offices, personal member offices and committee staff opportunities. There are also a few support offices that are nonpartisan if you are interested in that. The most common internships are legislative and press internships in personal offices and committees. Legislative interns work on hearing and bill memos while press interns work on daily news clips and social media content creation.

Research who your senators and representatives are

The easiest way to get an internship is to work with your home-state senator or local representative’s office. Offices often have a preference for constituents, so take advantage of that. Additionally, if they serve as the chair or vice chair of a committee, you may also have a higher chance of being hired there! However, don’t limit yourself to only these opportunities — apply for as many offices and committees that interest you. Nothing is impossible!

Sign up for and regularly look at the House and Senate bulletins

The House has a bulletin that announces publicly open internship opportunities through weekly emails. Sign up for the email list to have it delivered to your inbox. While the Senate does not have an email list, the Senate updates its website with opportunities frequently.

Have a high-impact, one-page resume

The Cawley Career Center has a helpful guide to write your resume . Your resume cannot be longer than one page, and you should quantify the impact you made in each of your bullet points. I would also recommend finding an experienced upperclassman you trust to review your resume. If you don’t know anyone, I would go to the Cawley Career Center to have the government industry advisor or a student working in the public sector industry to review your resume.

Network with the offices/committees that you would like to work for

Now that you have an idea of where you can work, what the openings are and how to create a strong resume, you can put your best foot forward by virtually coffee chatting hiring managers. They are usually staff assistants or intern coordinators in personal offices and committees. You can find out who they are by using LinkedIn and searching the office/committee and position. Then send a message on LinkedIn or cold email to schedule a quick 15-minute phone call to talk about their experience. At the end of the conversation, express your interest in the internship and don’t forget to send them a thank you email or message!

Apply 2-4 months before the internship starts

Hillternship applications usually open a few months before the internship starts. However, some offices and committees can open earlier in advance, so it doesn’t hurt to start looking before that.

Practice and prepare for interviews

What I like to do before interviews is to search for and draft questions I think they would ask me and then outline my responses. Offices will only ask you behavioral questions, but come prepared knowing what the office/committee’s priorities are. The key to succeeding in interviews is to be prepared, friendly and genuine. The person interviewing you will likely be who you will work with during your internship, so make sure to give off a good impression!

Whether you are interested in a Hillternship or not, I hope that the suggestions above will help you on your internship search. I have found internships to be eye-opening and helpful in informing my career search, and I would definitely recommend you to seek one out too. Good luck!

McDonough MBA Maintains Top U.S. News Ranking, Places Second for International Business Careers

Samantha Krause

April 9, 2024

Georgetown McDonough’s Full-time and Flex MBA Programs ranked among the nation’s best in the U.S. News & World Report’s annual ranking of graduate business programs, placing 24th and 9th, respectively, with top recognition for advancing careers in international business.

Within the listed categories, McDonough climbed to second for careers in international business and 7th for nonprofits. Georgetown also received recognition as a leading school for real estate.

“The Georgetown MBA has built a reputation as a rigorous and innovative program that prepares students to succeed on the global stage, and we are proud to see these outcomes reflected in the recent U.S. News & World Report ranking,” said Sudipta Dasmohapatra, senior associate dean for MBA programs. “Through our comprehensive curriculum, hands-on experiential learning opportunities, and unrivaled connections here in Washington, D.C., and across the world, we provide an immersive MBA experience in a way that only Georgetown can.”

U.S. News considers assessments by other business school deans in their rankings, from which McDonough maintained a high peer rating for both programs. The ranking also weighs admissions and employment data from 2023.

Fun facts from our Moscow Metro Tours:

From the very first days of its existence, the Moscow Metro was the object of civil defense, used as a bomb shelter, and designed as a defense for a possible attack on the Soviet Union.

At a depth of 50 to 120 meters lies the second, the coded system of Metro-2 of Moscow subway, which is equipped with everything you need, from food storage to the nuclear button.

According to some sources, the total length of Metro-2 reaches over 150 kilometers.

The Museum was opened on Sportivnaya metro station on November 6, 1967. It features the most interesting models of trains and stations.

Coffee Ring

The first scheme of Moscow Metro looked like a bunch of separate lines. Listen to a myth about Joseph Stalin and the main brown line of Moscow Metro.

Zodiac Metro

According to some astrologers, each of the 12 stops of the Moscow Ring Line corresponds to a particular sign of the zodiac and divides the city into astrological sector.

Astrologers believe that being in a particular zadiac sector of Moscow for a long time, you attract certain energy and events into your life.

Paleontological finds

Red marble walls of some of the Metro stations hide in themselves petrified inhabitants of ancient seas. Try and find some!

  • Every day each car in  Moscow metro passes  more than 600 km, which is the distance from Moscow to St. Petersburg.
  • Moscow subway system is the  5th in the intensity  of use (after the subways of Beijing, Tokyo, Seoul and Shanghai).
  • The interval in the movement of trains in rush hour is  90 seconds .

Moscow Metro

The Moscow Metro Tour is included in most guided tours’ itineraries. Opened in 1935, under Stalin’s regime, the metro was not only meant to solve transport problems, but also was hailed as “a people’s palace”. Every station you will see during your Moscow metro tour looks like a palace room. There are bright paintings, mosaics, stained glass, bronze statues… Our Moscow metro tour includes the most impressive stations best architects and designers worked at - Ploshchad Revolutsii, Mayakovskaya, Komsomolskaya, Kievskaya, Novoslobodskaya and some others.

What is the kremlin in russia?

The guide will not only help you navigate the metro, but will also provide you with fascinating background tales for the images you see and a history of each station.

And there some stories to be told during the Moscow metro tour! The deepest station - Park Pobedy - is 84 metres under the ground with the world longest escalator of 140 meters. Parts of the so-called Metro-2, a secret strategic system of underground tunnels, was used for its construction.

During the Second World War the metro itself became a strategic asset: it was turned into the city's biggest bomb-shelter and one of the stations even became a library. 217 children were born here in 1941-1942! The metro is the most effective means of transport in the capital.

There are almost 200 stations 196 at the moment and trains run every 90 seconds! The guide of your Moscow metro tour can explain to you how to buy tickets and find your way if you plan to get around by yourself.

Title: ‘A Time for Community’ – Georgetown Muslim Couple Reflects on Ramadan and Eid

Abrar Omeish and Umar Shareef met at Georgetown University during Ramadan in 2022. Omeish completed the dual degree Master in Public Policy/Juris Doctor program, offered in partnership by the McCourt School of Public Policy and Georgetown University Law Center, in December 2023, and Shareef is a doctoral student in the Arabic & Islamic Studies program in the Graduate School and serves as a teaching associate.

Abrar Omeish (left) and Umar Shareef (right) dressed in wedding clothes, smile as they hold up their wedding certificate

Two years later, they are married and excited to celebrate Ramadan as a couple. They met at the Yarrow Mamout Masjid , which is the result of decades of advocacy by students and staff on campus. In the late 1980s, Omeish’s father, a double Hoya, co-founded the Muslim Student Association and first Muslim prayer space on campus, which was in the basement of Copley Hall.

The couple met when Shareef was a leader for a series of night prayers called taraweeh . The two would pray and later meet up near Old North Hall to chat and get to know each other. “We are ultimately grateful and indebted to Georgetown for facilitating spaces of faith and community that helped us nurture our hearts alongside our souls and minds,” said Omeish.

Explore this couple’s individual experiences of Ramadan and how they celebrated Eid Al-Fitr growing up.

Building a Faith Community

Omeish: “Ramadan is not a festival or holiday, nor is it merely a time for community, iftars or feasts. People spend all day and night worshiping – it is normal to find Muslims in the mosque at 11 p.m. or awake at 5 a.m. During the last ten days, people begin praying in the mosque as early as 3 a.m. through sunrise: some even live in the mosque and worship every hour.

Infographic with a blue background and an iceberg (centered) with text comparing what people think Ramadan is about (top) versus what Ramadan is actually about (bottom)

Fasting is a pillar of our faith, and our worship throughout the nights and days of the holy month serves as practice for self-discipline toward what is good for us, rather than what our whims or desires draw us toward. Ramadan is an annual spiritual detox where we reconnect with divine guidance to ensure we are devoted to what matters in our lives, and that our actions reflect those intentions. It is an opportunity to set goals, rectify our wrongs and reorient ourselves toward God in all that we say and do for the 11 months to come.

I’m proud to be part of a faith that I share with nearly 1/4 of the global population and can be found in nearly every country around the globe. Being Muslim gives me a coherent pursuit of truth that carries meaning because it is rooted in our Creator, and that informs a productive path for me as a member of a broader community seeking to establish justice in our society. Islam balances rationality and love to inspire justice and dignity for all people.”

Shareef: “Ramadan is so much more than just fasting: it is also the month of the Quran. I memorized the Quran in undergrad and have always felt a profound connection to it during this holy month.

Although the community fasts during the month together, it is the daily recitations of the complete Quran as a community during the optional night congregational prayer that resonate most deeply for me. It is a time for introspection, a journey that is not just about discipline but about reconnecting with the unchanging wisdom of the divine word.

This rediscovery of core values and purpose is what makes Ramadan so transformative. I emerge feeling not only spiritually enriched but with a renewed sense of direction.”

Ramadan is an annual spiritual detox where we reconnect with divine guidance to ensure we are devoted to what matters in our lives, and that our actions reflect those intentions. – Abrar Omeish

Enjoying Eid, the End of Ramadan

Omeish: “We typically celebrate Eid by waking up early to get ready: we shower, put on new clothes, greet one another warmly, eat a date to start the day and repeat “ takbeerat” – expressing gratitude and praise to God, stating clearly that we answer his call – throughout the morning and during the rest of the day. After taking a family picture and exchanging gifts, we go to Eid prayer. There are usually hundreds of people there: it is a special prayer performed only on Eid. Congregants repeat the “ takbeerat ” sentences together and are then led in a short prayer followed by a khutba (or sermon).

Eid prayers are usually early (sometimes 6 a.m.), and they run every hour through the early afternoon, depending on the mosque that is hosting. After prayers, many families go out for brunch. Afterward, we would visit or call our friends and families, both near and far, to say “Eid Mubarak,” which means “Have a Blessed Eid.”

Abrar Omeish (left) and Umar Shareef (right) sit on a bench with a colorful archway around them looking out at a desertscape

In the evening, we have a large family dinner. My family was lucky because my dad’s side were all local to Northern Virginia, so we reserved a restaurant or party venue and enjoyed each other’s company in our nice new clothes and took a huge family photo (100+ people!).

For those who don’t have family nearby, the mosque community normally has an Eid festival or celebratory function. If not done on that same day, families typically do something that weekend and mosques will almost always have festive programming as well, including a toy drive in advance of Eid to donate gifts for children.

Notably, Eid Al-Fitr, meaning the celebration (Eid) of breaking fast, marks the end of Ramadan – all the fasting, worship, prayer, devotion and giving – that people partake in, so it’s an exhausting month full of sacrifices. Eid is also the celebration of all that we accomplished. This is different from Eid Al-Adha which comes after the pilgrimage.”

Shareef: “ Growing up, Eid meant joyous mornings in Maine with my family. We would rise before sunrise, and, after showering and dressing, would chant a chorus of pre-dawn prayers.

Dressed in our finest, sometimes new for the occasion, we would head to the mosque for the morning Eid prayer at 8 a.m. More than once, my dad would deliver the Eid sermon. After the service, we greeted people within the community and hugged one another. Everyone would be united in celebration. The mosque itself transforms into a vibrant community center where families share sweets and breakfast, and there would be a colorful spread laid out on the floor.

As we ate and drank tea, some of us would recount our Ramadan experiences. The rest of the day would then be spent in delicious feasts – sometimes devouring donuts at the local, nationally renowned donut shop (Holy Donuts), and other times barbecuing with family by the ocean.

Eid is, and always will be, a joyous occasion, a time to reconnect with loved ones and forge new bonds within the community.”
