Best time to go

Flight duration, time difference, explore the gateway to arabia, home to bustling souks, towering dunes and turtle-paddled shores.

Combining breathtaking natural beauty with a well-preserved cultural heritage, the Sultanate of Oman is one of the least known, yet most exciting tourist destinations in the Middle East. The country perches on the south-east tip of the Arabian Peninsula, overlooking the Arabian Sea, the Gulf of Oman and the Persian Gulf. Within this stretch of land lies an amazing range of scenery, sights and activities. Visit the capital city of Muscat , which offers a glimpse of authentic Arabia with bustling waterfronts, souks and alleyways; explore magnificent forts and palaces, ancient fishing villages and archaeological sites; enjoy 4×4 excursions into the rolling dunes of Sharqiya Sands and the impressive peaks of the Hajar mountains; take a dhow trip and go snorkelling along the coastline of the Musandam Peninsula ; or simply relax in the tropical atmosphere of Salalah .

A small group tour to Oman is the best way of combining breathtaking natural beauty with a well-preserved cultural heritage. Peaceful and tranquil, Oman occupies the south-eastern part of the Arabian Peninsula, where it has long been an important gateway for trade between Africa and Asia. Our group tours and adventure holidays in Oman are one of the best ways to explore what is arguably the Middle East’s most underrated destination.

A land of ancient seafarers and home to the legendary Sinbad, historically Oman was closed off to the outside world and, even today still exudes a captivating aura of myth and mystery. A compelling blend of the old and the new, its impeccably maintained capital, Muscat, combines traditional Arabic and Islamic styles with ancient fortifications and architectural treasures that sets it apart from many other oil-rich modern cities in the Middle East.

Outside the cities, visitors can immerse themselves in Oman’s spectacular desert scenery, riddled with rugged mountains, hidden oases and a coastline of quite staggering beauty. Perhaps surprisingly, Oman is home to the world’s largest population of loggerhead turtles and the endangered green turtle.

Heading north, travellers might be surprised to come across fjord-like enclaves of the Musandam Peninsula, a small area separated from the main body of Oman by the UAE. Towards the east sits the ancient town of Nizwa, once the capital of the Imamate of Oman which grew rich from its position on the nearby trade routes. Nizwa Fort, an impressive 17th-century fortification, dominates the town and is definitely worth a visit.

To the south, beyond the Qara Mountains, lies the city of Salalah, a surprisingly lush Eden, whose waterfalls and frankincense trees benefit from the annual fruits of the monsoon rains. In a country that is 80% desert, Salalah is a real treat and every trip to Oman is completed by the hospitality of its welcoming people, who are visibly proud of their unique country.

Today, Oman enjoys a reputation as a forward-thinking Arabic country with luxury hotels and a stable government, but it still manages to retain much of its old desert traditions and proud history – something we endeavour to showcase on all of our Oman tours or Tailor-Made  Oman holidays

Highlights of oman, best experiences.

Surf the dunes on 4WD at sunset

Surf the dunes on 4WD at sunset

The Empty Quarter offers the iconic rolling dunes you'd expect of the desert. For those who like to get the adrenalin pumping, take your 4WD 'off-road' and surf the sand until you find your own isolated spot to enjoy the setting sun over the dunes.

Seek out dolphins in Muscat Bay

Seek out dolphins in Muscat Bay

You will hopefully see some of the many dolphins that live in and around Muscat Bay during a morning boat tour where it’s possible to see spinner, bottlenose and common dolphins. Then travel to Bandar Khiran bay, one of the best snorkeling spots in Oman.

Enjoy a homecooked meal with locals

Enjoy a homecooked meal with locals

Connect with local Omanis through the most ancient of pastimes, eating! Be welcomed into the home of a Muscat local for a delicious homecooked meal and cultural exchange experience. This supports families who wish to show visitors daily Omani life.

Camp under the stars

Camp under the stars

One of the country’s most isolated desert areas where majestic wind-blown dunes tower above the desert floor and the sun turns them a multitude of ever changing hues. This is a fantastic place to go to camp in the silent beauty of the desert.

Experience Wadi Ghul

Experience Wadi Ghul

Wadi Ghul, located at Jebel Shams, is colloquially known as 'Oman's Grand Canyon' and for very good reason. The 1000m sheer drops are not for the faint of heart, but those okay with heights will be rewarded with breathtaking views and truly memorable walks.

Discover the mysteries of Bahla Fort

Discover the mysteries of Bahla Fort

Believed to be the home of genies, Bahla is steeped in legend and witchcraft. The UNESCO World Heritage Site is set within the oasis town of Bahla, flanked by high mountains, and was built by the Banu Nebhan tribe in the 12th century.

Admire the Hajar Mountains

Admire the Hajar Mountains

Rising over 2000 metres above the surrounding countryside, the Hajar Mountains hide within them a rugged network of wadi channels that have carved an array of dramatic canyons and caves, some of which have cliff dwellings along the canyon rim.

Discover a beautiful desert oasis

Discover a beautiful desert oasis

A short drive from the heart of the desert brings you to Wadi Bani Khalid. A picture perfect oasis located in a canyon, surrounded by date palms and crystal clear natural swimming pools. Have a wander or do some canyonning if you're feeling more adventurous.

Discover the Lost City of Ubar

Discover the Lost City of Ubar

Visit the 'Atlantis of the Desert' that caught the attention of great explorers like Betram, Lawrence and Thesinger. There is not a great deal to see here, but the reality of being able to visit a place so shrouded in mystery makes it quite an exciting visit.

USEFUL INFORMATION

Health and Vaccinations

There are no mandatory immunisations for travellers to Oman though you should be up-to-date with Typhoid, Tetanus, Polio and Hepatitis A. We recommend you seek advice from your local GP or travel centre as to the correct immunisations and preventative treatments.

  Currency

In Oman the official unit of currency is the Omani Rial (OMR).

To check out the latest exchange rate for the places that you are visiting you can go to www.oanda.com .

Cultural Sensitivity

On our tours you will frequently interact with local people, each with their own distinct customs and traditions. We therefore ask you to be considerate and to treat them with respect. Your tour-leaders and guides will always be able to advise you accordingly.

Oman is a Muslim country, and it is important that, as guests of the country, we respect the local customs. When in Muscat we will visit the grand mosque of Sultan Quaboos. While at the mosque, both ladies and gentlemen will need to dress conservatively. Ladies will need to cover their heads with a scarf and wear a loose fitting, long sleeved shirt that covers arms as well as long skirt or trousers. Gentlemen are asked to wear a long-sleeved collared shirt with long trousers.

Language & Religion

Arabic is the official language of Oman, and English and Asian languages such as Hindi, Urdu, and Baluchi are also widely spoken. Swahili is spoken by some, a legacy of Oman´s former East African presence. English is widely used in business.

Islam is the official religion, although other religions are tolerated under the country´s Basic Law. Muslims make up 86 percent of the population. Three-fourths of the Muslims are Ibadis, a minority sect dating from the 8th century. Most of the remainder adhere to Sunni Islam and the rest to Shia Islam. Indian Hindus account for 13 percent of the population. There are also small numbers of non-Omani Christians.

Time

Oman is 4 hours ahead of GMT.

A useful website to check the time zone differences is www.worldtimezone.com .

Food and drink

The food is mainly Arabic, Lebanese, Turkish, and Indian. Many Omanis make a distinction between "Arabic" food and "Omani" food, with the former being the description of the standard dishes found throughout the Arabian Peninsula.

Omani food tends to be less spicy and served in quite large portions - whole fish are not uncommon at lunch in some local restaurants. As benefits of a country with a long coastline, seafood is quite a common dish, particularly shark, which is surprisingly tasty.

Book your 2024/2025 holiday to Oman with Wendy Wu Tours

The Sultanate of Oman sits on the edge of the Middle East region, with a long and glorious coastline on the Arabian Sea. A progressive and future-facing nation, it is often overlooked for its flashier neighbours – all the better for the travellers starting to catch on to Oman’s many wonders, there are less people to share them with!

Here, a modern face thinly veils a thoroughly ancient soul, and many traditional values remain ingrained in the national psyche: the locals pride themselves on their hospitality, so a very warm welcome is guaranteed.

After soaking up the relaxed and friendly vibes of capital Muscat, it’s time to explore Oman’s greatest boon, its nature. From quaint fishing villages perched on dramatic sweeps of coastline from which you can watch old wooden fishing dhows plying turquoise waters, to the rolling sand dunes and towering red cliffs that you pass as you travel between lush oases, there is so much to explore in this undiscovered gem.

Whether you visit for a short stopover on your way further east or can devote an entire two-or three-week holiday to Oman, you are guaranteed to be delighted, surprised and very well looked after. In many ways, Oman is the easiest and most appealing middle eastern state to travel in: It is very safe, the people are laid back and friendly, it has vast swathes of desert, countless picturesque forts, dramatic mountains and an endless coastline with world-class beaches. Throw in some world-class hotels and desert camps and it is not hard to see why we feel Oman is the ultimate romantic Arabian destination.

We know Oman extremely well and take pleasure in creating bespoke itineraries that will take you on a real adventure to unexplored corners of this diverse nation (see our ‘Adventures in Oman itinerary’) but many of our clients prefer an easier paced trip that combines a few days in Muscat with desert, mountains and a beach.

Best Time to Visit OMAN

Your weather guide to pick the best season for your tour..

tours to oman from uk

Season : January and February is “winter” in Oman, and is usually considered the best time to visit. The weather around Muscat can be comfortably crisp and sunny, while the temperatures down south near Salalah are pleasantly warm, with clear skies and calm seas.

Rainfall : Rain is possible in the north these months, but occurs only rarely with less than 1 inch per month and lots of sunny days in between. However, rain is almost unheard of this time of year in the south.

Availability : January and February are peak travel months! Make sure you book a few months in advance to get preferred accommodations.

tours to oman from uk

Season : Apart from Spring Break, March and April are considered a shoulder season as temperatures and humidity begin to slowly climb up, and crowds diminish.

Rainfall : Rain is possible in the north, but unlikely, with just over half an inch per month. Sunny weather can be expected every day in the south.

Availability : Apart from Spring break week (in both Europe and America), this is a wonderful time to see Oman while the weather is comfortable, rooms are at a reduced price, and most sites are uncrowded.

Keep in mind : If you want to observe the rose harvest, and rosewater distillation process in Jebel Akhdar, the last few weeks of April are usually the best time to come.

tours to oman from uk

Season : Oman is mostly desert, so it makes sense that the summers are warm! Up north around Muscat and Musandam, the temperatures soar well-above what most consider comfortable, humidity is high, and crowds disappear. Down south, however, summer is an entirely different experience, as mists from the sea transform the rolling hills into something more akin to Ireland than what most imagine to be Arabia. Expect lush, dripping foliage, a fair amount of mud, and amazing springs and waterfalls. Tourists from many countries come to experience the season which means festivals and other activities abound .

Rainfall : There is the chance of rainfall in May in the areas surrounding Muscat, but almost no chance of rain at all in June or July. If you’re traveling south though, expect wet weather from the end of June to about mid August.

Availability : With the sweltering heat, you can pretty much guarantee there will always be space in the hotels up north, and at the best prices you will find all year. However, over half a million travelers (mostly from Oman and  surrounding countries) descend on Salalah Jun-August each year to experience the cooler weather, and green landscape, so book early if you want to come south this season.

Keep in mind : If you choose to take advantage of the summer prices up north, be sure to practice good hydration and sun protection.

tours to oman from uk

Season : September and October are considered a shoulder season as temperatures begin to slowly cool down up north, and the weather dries up down south.

Rainfall : Rain is almost unheard of this time of year across the country.

Availability : This is a wonderful time to see Oman while the weather is comfortable, rooms are at a reduced price, and most sites are uncrowded.

Keep in mind : If you want to see any of the 500 bird species spotted in Oman, October is one of the best times to see many species on migration.

tours to oman from uk

Season : The weather this time of year is comfortably warm, and dry across the country, and nights can get a bit chilly in the desert, and mountains.

Rainfall : Wet weather is very unlikely, though possible, as less than half an inch per month of rain lands on Oman this time of year.

Availability : This can be a busier in time to visit Oman, especially during holidays at the end of November and December. Be sure to book early to ensure you get your preferred accommodations.

You are visiting a land and culture where the people place great stress on modesty, particularly in the way women dress. While they are accustomed to many types of visitors, we would desire that your sensitivity and modesty would result in an enhanced level of acceptance and better communication with the people in whose land you are to be a guest.

For women, we recommend you avoid revealing or sleeveless tops. We also recommend you bring the option of loose, longer-than-the-knee pants or skirts. For men we recommend a few collared shirts and some long pants be included.

The easiest way to get local currency is to bring a bank card and withdraw cash as needed. You will be able to find Banks and ATMs in every major city. Oman is a partly cash-based society. Hotels, larger restaurants, supermarkets, and some more touristy businesses in Oman’s main tourist cities will accept major credit cards, but most smaller stores do not.

We recommend that you keep a ready supply of cash, including small change for taxi fare when desired and miscellaneous tipping on hand during your stay in Oman. If you do pay by credit card, we recommend that you double check the receipt before signing, as working in an unfamiliar currency can allow you to be charged more than you may expect, either intentionally or inadvertently.

There is a difference between a tour guide, and a driver in Oman.  Tour guides are licensed to give historical and cultural tours of Oman while drivers simply get you where you need to go! For our tours, however, your driver will also act as your guide throughout Oman. All our excellent drivers are licensed by the Oman Ministry of Tourism for guiding services. They act as your personal cultural ambassador and are very knowledgeable about the sights and history of the country. All of the drivers that we work with speak English, and will be able to communicate well with you. Please let us know if you need a driver to speak another language, as some options are available.

Coming to Oman during Ramadan will affect your trip. There will be less options for restaurants during lunch, as most restaurants are closed during the day. Alcohol will not be served. Shops will open up later in the day with people sleeping later after staying up to break the fast. While tourists are not expected to fast, eating and drinking in public is illegal in Oman during Ramadan. Non-Muslim guests can enjoy meals in their hotels, in certain restaurants, or out in nature away from the view of local people.  For more about how Ramadan affects your tour, read our post about  travel to Oman during Ramadan.

Oman uses the UK 3-pin electrical sockets (Type G) and outlets are 220–240 volts, so be sure to pack the necessary plug adaptors for your mobile phone, camera, laptop, or any other electronics you may travel with.

PLEASE NOTE: Travel plug adapters do not change the voltage, so the electricity coming through the adapter will still be the same 220-240 volts the socket is supplying. North American sockets supply electricity at between 110 and 120 volts, far lower than in most of the rest of the world. This being the case, North American appliances are generally built for 110-120 volts. That doesn’t mean that your specific appliance isn’t already compatible with the higher voltage or that you won’t be able to use your appliance in Oman…you will just need to make sure that your appliance will be able to facilitate 220-240 volts and that you have the appropriate adapter plug.

Incredible Oman Tour

Incredible Oman

We really enjoyed our tour with GidOman. The city tour with Salim was very interesting but disappointingly was only a half day tour. We then had 3 days with Aziz which were truly unforgettable, Aziz went out of his way to ensure we had a good time. The first day we visited the Bimmah Sinkhole, hiked and swam in Wadi Shab (here Aziz made sure we were safe and helped us over the slippery tricky parts when on the water part of the hike), took us to a fabulous camp in the desert where we went on a dune drive and watched the sunset in the dunes. The second day we visited Nizwa castle, fort and Souk, the ancient village of Al Hamra and finally to our guesthouse in Misfat Al Abriyyin. Aziz took us for a walk through the terraced plantations and explained the Falaj irrigation system. The final day we visited Bahla Fort and Jabreen Castle. Each day we were treated to a delicious local lunch. We are so grateful to have had such a brilliant tour guide who felt like a friend. Thank you Aziz. Our only comment to the organisers at GidOman is that it would have helped to have had better communication about what the schedule was for each day and what we needed to bring, this needs to be sent on confirmation of a place on the tour. For example water or reef shoes would have made the hike in the Wadi easier and information of what is the dress code for the Mosque etc. It would also have been nice to have had some sort of briefing or a written schedule on the first day when we were picked up by the driver and taken to our hotel. Finally please note this is not a 5 day tour as advertised on Tour Radar it is a 3 1/2 day tour.

Excellent guide Hussein. 60 % of the positive expérience of the tour. In general I was satisfy by the tour. Well organized. Probably too short though to cover well the destination. Fortunately I extend alone 3 more nights in Muscat at the end. The negative points were: 1. too long answers to my questions before my decision to take prt on the program. it made me in the position of booking the flights at the last minute, increasing my costs. 2. The fact that I wasn not informed in advance that I joined a group that have already made the UAE tour before mine only on Oman. 3. The bus used was much too old with no suffisant climation at 35C.

Treasures of Oman 6 Days – Oman Tour Package

We really enjoyed the trip overall. We saw and experienced a lot and could ask the guides anything we wanted. They were very eager and flexible to meet our needs. We had two different guides for each of the three days. With the first one we had to organize and pay for all entrance fees and drinks ourselves. This is contrary to the agreed terms. We have spent so total safe again 55 Rial extra. The program was not really known to both guides and it was sometimes positive and sometimes negative deviated from it. So we had no Dune bashing and had to pay for the Dolphin watching (which was not organized at all) and the Camel ride. The trip was not planned wisely. For example, we arrived at the market in Nizwa when everything was over. The short city tour in Muscat on Saturday did not take place at all. Thus we never saw the big mosque. This would have been one of our highlights, which we really wanted to see! The second guide was much better educated, explained more and could answer our questions precisely. Thus, we learned much more about the country and its people. We learned from this that it is not good to book a trip through two agencies involved. We also advise against changing guides during such a short trip.

This tour is a good way to see Oman beyond Muscat. Lots of time in cars, but some of this, such as driving through the desert and the canyon are part of the experience - it isn't just let's drive from A to B. There was downtime/own exploring time built in which was great as you can take advantage of the beaches or pools at the different locations - very welcome as it was so hot!

If you only have a few days to discover Northern Oman, it is a great choice. You'll see many parts of the country, let it be the 400 years old towns, desert with high dunes, or swimming with sea turtles in their natural habitat. Special thanks to our private guide, Aziz, who was a very nice travel partner for the last days! He knows everything about the country and its culture.
The Highlights of Oman tour was a perfect combination of beautiful landscapes, historic sites and cultural insights. Our tour leader was excellent and very knowledgeable.
I went on this adventure with my best friend in February this year and it was amazing! We absolutely loved it. Our guide, Abdulaziz was beyond knowledgeable and took so much time answering all of our group‘s questions and explaining a lot about the history of Oman. It is such a wonderful adventure because you experience so many different sceneries - From strolling through Muscat city, on to Wadi Shab and sleeping in the desert, Misfat Al abriyeen (a village in the mountains) etc. I honestly can only recommend this adventure to anyone that visits Oman, we would 100% do it again.

15 things to know to get more out of your Oman trip

Natasha Amar

Our list of tips will help any traveler get the most out of their trip to culturally rich and ultra-hospitable Oman © Emily_M_Wilson / Getty Images

In  Oman , visitors find  pristine desert landscapes and nature experiences , all in a modern Gulf country with a vibrant cultural heritage.

This heritage is apparent in the many languages spoken in the country, forts and archeological sites along ancient trading routes, and traditional practices such as rosewater distillation.

Today, warm and welcoming Omanis still live by their classic societal values of humility, kindness and hospitality. They’ll invite visitors to share a meal, or go out of their way to guide a lost traveler.

To make your trip a truly memorable exercise in cultural exchange and mutual respect, here are some things to know before head to to Oman.

Two people swimming in the turqoise waters of Wadi Shab, Oman

1. Dress modestly, even when swimming

Female visitors do not need to wear a hijab in Oman, but dressing generally modestly is recommended. While Omanis will be too polite to say anything, clothes that don’t appear respectful to the culture will certainly affect the quality of your interactions.

Women should wear clothing that covers their shoulders and reaches below the knees (and also covers their arms and ankles, when visiting a mosque). Avoid low-cut tops, short skirts, shorts and dresses, and garment that’s transparent or clings to the body. Women must wear a headscarf (they can bring their own) while visiting a mosque.

Men should avoid tank tops and instead wear shirts or t-shirts with trousers or shorts that are at least knee-length. While visiting mosques, men must wear full-length jeans or pants.

Outside of swimming pools located in international resorts and hotels in Muscat , swimsuits and bikinis are inappropriate. This is true for natural pools located in the wadis (valleys) that you might come across while hiking in places like Wadi Tiwi and on public beaches around fishing villages.

Even the sight of foreigners in skimpy bathing suits h increasingly common to see foreigners in skimpy bathing suits, it’s wise to remember that these places are also frequented by Omanis. You might notice Omani men swimming in t-shirts and shorts – this should give you an idea of how important modesty is in the culture.

While swimming on public beaches visited by Omani families and pools close to villages, women will appear more considerate when they’re wearing a long t-shirt and shorts over their swimsuits.

Merchants in market shops of the old town Mutrah, Muscat, Oman, Middle East

2. English is widely spoken in cities

Oman’s official language is Arabic, and English is widely spoken in the cities and to a good extent in areas that have tourism infrastructure, such as the villages of Jebel Akhdar . Other than Arabic, you might hear such languages such as Kumzari, Baluchi, Swahili and, thanks to a large immigrant population, perhaps Hindi, Malayalam and Urdu, too.

3. A few local greetings will get you far

Omanis are friendly, hospitable and courteous, and these qualities are likely to permeate every interaction that you’ll have as a visitor. In Oman, conversations, however brief, and whether between strangers or friends, always begin with a proper greeting, usually “ as salam alaykum ” which translates to “peace be upon you.”

In some parts of the country, you might find yourself the subject of much curiosity, apparent from glances in your direction every few minutes or questions about where you’re from. Don’t be alarmed: Omanis take a genuine interest in visitors and want to make them feel welcome.

As such, it’s nice to greet people appropriately. Some useful phrases to know (in addition to the essential  “as salam alaykum” and “walaykum as salam,”  said in reply to the former), are  “sabah al khayr” (good morning), “misa al khayr” (good evening) and “shukran” (thank you).

A man serves qahwa, traditional coffee, from a thermos, Oman, Middle East

4. For a richer experience, don’t hesitate to accept invitations

Omanis are incredibly friendly and welcoming of visitors, and it’s not unusual for visitors to receive a few invitations during their time in the country. Whether it’s an invitation to someone’s home for a chat over qahwa (Arabic coffee) and dates, a group of friends paying for your meal at a restaurant or a meal brought over by a family camping nearby, accepting such generosity will only make your trip more memorable.

Offering a guest coffee is a respect toward them, and accepting indicates that you reciprocate. In Oman, coffee is ground with spices like cardamom and cinnamon, and qahwa is brewed with saffron and rosewater and served alongside dates.

Don’t be surprised if your cup of qahwa continues to be refilled each time you return it to your host. If you’ve had enough, indicate this by tilting your cup gently from side to side before you hand it to them. A bowl of water might be placed before you: dip the fingers of your right hand in it to wash them before you pick a date or begin a meal.

The traditional way of eating is with the fingers of the right hand while seated on the floor. As a guest, wait for the host to begin and then follow their example. Don’t attempt to do this with your left hand – in Omani culture (and much of the world) that is your toileting hand.

If you find yourself visiting an Omani home, take your shoes off before you enter. Any host will deeply appreciate even the smallest of gifts, such as a box of dates, nuts or sweets from the souq (market).

5. Ask permission before you photograph people or their homes

Whether you find yourself captivated by the scene of a vendor selling handmade silver jewelry at the Mutrah Souq , admire a group of Omani men wearing beautiful kumma (traditional patterned or embroidered caps) sipping coffee by the sea or are invited into a traditional village home, resist the urge to point your lens without asking for permission first.

Omanis deeply respect their privacy, and a stranger taking your photo without permission is considered intrusive. A quick, simple greeting in Arabic helps break the ice; local men will generally oblige.

In general, you should refrain from photographing women, especially those wearing an abaya (traditional long black robe). Under absolutely no circumstances should you attempt a photograph without first obtaining explicit permission (this is easier if you’re a woman yourself).

6. Look forward to spending time outdoors

The most enjoyable experiences in Oman take place out of doors, from gentle walks through palm plantations and watching nesting turtles on the beach to scuba diving in thriving marine reserves.

Any visitor to Oman should expect to spend a significant amount of time on road trips to get to historic medieval forts, charming fishing towns, picturesque tidal lagoons and freshwater pools hidden away in the valleys.

Wild camping is allowed, and opportunities to do so abound around the country. Be sure to pack comfortable clothing suitable for the outdoors, a tent and a sleeping bag.

7. Keep an eye on weather warnings

Low-lying valleys, beaches and wadis are prone to flash floods after heavy rainfall. It’s safer to camp on high ground and to check the weather forecast and warnings before you go.

As a result of rising ocean temperatures, tropical cyclones (most originating in the Arabian Sea) are an increasing risk leading to ocean surges, destructive winds, flooding and landfall. Pay close attention to cyclone and storm alerts and check the official website of Oman’s Directorate General of Meteorology.

8. Don’t underestimate hiking routes

If you plan on  hiking independently, weigh the length and difficulty of the trail against your fitness level and experience in the mountains. If you’re inexperienced with harsh environments, do not hike alone. Ensure you are carrying at least three liters of water, and always wear proper hiking shoes and a sun hat.

Trekking guides not only safely guide you around the peaks and valleys, but they can also share information on the geology of an area and the opportunity to interact with communities where English is not widely spoken.

In the peak of summer, the heat can get intense in the Hajar Mountains causing dehydration and fatigue very quickly. We don’t recommend this season for hiking.

9. Be aware of the rules during Ramadan

If you’re visiting Oman during the holy month of Ramadan , when Muslims fast from dawn to sunset, remember that non-Muslim tourists are not allowed to eat, drink, smoke, play loud music or dance in public places during the day.

Once the fast is broken after the prayers at sundown and Muslims sit down for iftar (the evening meal), it’s fine to eat outside. During the month of Ramadan, it’s even more important than usual to dress modestly.

10. When meeting a member of the opposite sex, wait for them to offer their hand

While handshakes among men are common, don’t offer your hand to initiate a handshake when you’re greeting an Omani of the opposite sex. Physical contact between members of the opposite sex does not occur, unless they are related or deeply familiar. To see whether your counterpart is comfortable and want to be greeted that way, wait for them to offer their hand first. You must always shake hands only with your right hand.

11. Steer clear of inappropriate topics of conversation

Oman is a monarchy, and Omanis have deep respect not only for their country and culture but also for the leadership of the sultan. Any politically charged questions or discussions that might even obliquely criticize the ruler or the government are considered inappropriate. In any case, locals are unlikely to share their opinions on such topics with an outsider.

Rumor-mongering is punishable by law and can result in both fines and imprisonment. In the same vein, never say anything that disrespects Islam (or any other religion), or attempts to challenge religious beliefs or practices.

Foreigners might be surprised to know that it is also inappropriate for a man to ask an Omani man about the women in his family (even to inquire about his wife or daughters). It’s best to stay broad, by wishing good health to him and his family – and leave it at that.

12. Don’t drink alcohol in public or exhibit drunken behavior

Alcohol should only be consumed in licensed restaurants and bars, most of which are in international hotels. It’s illegal to drink in public (outside of such establishments) – and anyone exhibiting overly drunken behavior or being extremely loud under the influence might face legal action. Oman has zero tolerance for drug use, and possession of even small amounts can result in fines, deportation and even imprisonment.

Men in traditional dress playing pipes, singing and dancing around in a ceremony, Nizwa, Oman

13. Don’t swear or make rude gestures

Swearing loudly and making offensive hand gestures are illegal and can result in legal action should the recipient register a complaint.

14. Don’t photograph government buildings or military checkpoints

In Oman, you’re prohibited from photographing and filming some government buildings, military sites and checkpoints, and military vehicles. Nor may you post photos and videos of these on social media. Doing so can attract fines and even imprisonment. If you’re unsure whether something is covered by this policy, or even unsure of what you might be photographing, err on the side of caution.

15. Make note of emergency numbers

In case of emergencies and the need for rescue, evacuation or urgent medical assistance, contact the Royal Oman Police on 9999.

One of the most enjoyable weekends I have spent and it was not just because of the beauty of Oman´s beaches, dunes and wadi but also because of perfect job...

Oman is well plugged into international air networks, either through the national carrier Oman Air or through other Gulf airlines such as Emirates, Qatar Airways and Etihad , meaning that it’s now possible to reach Muscat from most major air-hubs in Europe, North America and Australasia with only a single change of plane.

Tailor-made trips for   Oman

Overland routes into the country are more limited. Oman shares land borders with the UAE, Saudi Arabia and Yemen, though at the time of writing it was only possible to enter the country via the UAE border posts listed. There are no regular international ferry routes into Oman, although the country is an increasingly popular stop on many cruise itineraries.

Oman Air is currently the only operator offering direct flights from London Heathrow to Muscat. There are numerous one-stop options with other Gulf carriers including Qatar Airways (via Doha), Etihad (via Abu Dhabi), Gulf Air (via Manama) and Emirates (via Dubai), while British Airways also fly via Abu Dhabi. Fares start at around £600; flying time is around 7hr 30min outbound, 8hr on the way back. Oman Air also operates codeshare flights with BMI to Muscat via Heathrow from Manchester, Edinburgh and Aberdeen. Travelling from Ireland , the easiest thing to do is to get yourself to Heathrow and pick up a flight from there. Oman Air and BMI operate codeshare flights from Belfast.

The flight from North America to Oman is a long journey with myriad different route options. It’s possible to get to Muscat with just one change of plane travelling from New York or Toronto (with Emirates or Etihad via Dubai or Abu Dhabi respectively), Washington ( Qatar Airways via Doha), Chicago ( Etihad ), Houston (Emirates and Qatar Airways ), and Los Angeles and San Francisco (both Emirates).

From Canada, you could fly from Toronto, Montreal, Vancouver and other destinations to London with either British Airways or Air Canada, and then pick up a direct flight to Muscat with Oman Air, or go via Abu Dhabi with BA. Flying times from the east coast to Muscat can be as little as sixteen to seventeen hours depending on connections, although other flights can take anything up to 24 hours. From the west coast you’re looking at a minimum flight time of eighteen to twenty hours, possibly quite a bit longer. Fares from both coasts are around US$1300–1400.

There are various one-stop routes from Australia to Oman. One option is to aim for a major Asian air-hub and pick up a direct flight with Oman Air (who currently operate nonstop flights to Muscat from Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, Bangkok, Hong Kong, Colombo, Mumbai and Delhi, among quite a few other places in Asia). Other one-stop routes include travelling via Dubai with Emirates from Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and Perth, or via Abu Dhabi with Etihad from Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane. Fares are around A$2000, with flying times averaging around thirty hours.

From New Zealand , it’s easiest to travel to either Bangkok (with Thai Airways), Singapore (Singapore Airlines) or Kuala Lumpur (Malaysia Airlines) and pick up an Oman Air flight to Muscat from there – or alternatively to follow one of the routes via Australia described above. Fares start at around $2700, with flying times from around 33 hours.

From South Africa , the simplest way of getting to Oman is to catch a direct South African Airways flight from Johannesburg, Cape Town or Durban to Dubai, and pick up a connection there. Alternatively, you could fly to Dar es Salaam, from where Oman Air operates direct flights to Muscat. Fares start from around R8000. Another romantic, if slightly more time-consuming, option is to fly to Dar es Salaam and then make your way over to Zanzibar , from where direct Oman Air flights leave for Muscat, allowing you to combine a visit to Oman and its most important former colony in a single visit.

Oman Air’s “Visit Oman Air Pass” (VOAP) may prove useful if you’re combining a visit to Oman with one to the UAE or other countries in the Gulf. The pass offers discounted airfares (at a fixed $100/flight, or “sector”, as it’s described) from Muscat to various regional cities including Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Al Ain, Ras al Khaimah, Bahrain, Doha, Kuwait City and Damman when bought in conjunction with a flight to Oman from London or other points outside the Gulf. The scheme is also valid for domestic flights to Khasab and Salalah, but at $100 per journey these actually work out more expensive than standard fares – although this may change in future.

Oman shares land borders with the UAE, Yemen and Saudi Arabia, although at present it’s only possible to enter the country overland from the UAE , either via Buraimi/Al Ain, Khatmat Milahah or Hatta. There’s also a border between the UAE and the Musandam peninsula at Tibat. Border formalities at all four posts are straightforward, and citzens of most European, North American and Australasian countries can buy a visa on the spot. The whole process shouldn’t usually take more than fifteen to thirty minutes, although you might have to wait considerably longer during weekends and local holidays.

Agents and operators

Signing up for a tour of Oman – either tailor-made in your own car or 4WD, or as part of a larger group – takes the hassle out of organizing transport around the country, and can also get you some good deals on rates at better hotels. On the downside, travelling around in a group inevitably neuters your experience of the country, while the itineraries offered by most agents are boringly predictable – although booking a tailor-made package should at least enable you to customize your itinerary to suit your particular interests. Many foreign operators offer tours of the country while there’s also a decent selection of operators in Oman itself.

If you just want some kind of discounted flight-plus-hotel package deal, Destination Oman ( w www.destoman.com), Dream Oman ( w www.dreamoman.com ) and Travel Oman ( w www.omantravel.co.uk ) all have a decent selection of offers.

Entry requirements

This information is for people travelling on a full ‘British citizen’ passport from the UK. It is based on the UK government’s understanding of the current rules for the most common types of travel.

The authorities in Oman set and enforce entry rules. If you’re not sure how these requirements apply to you, contact the Omani Embassy in the UK .

COVID-19 rules

There are no COVID-19 testing or vaccination requirements for travellers entering Oman.

Passport validity requirements

To enter Oman, your passport must have an ‘expiry date’ at least 6 months after the date you arrive.

Check with your travel provider that your passport and other travel documents meet requirements. Renew your passport if you need to.

You will be denied entry if you do not have a valid travel document or try to use a passport that has been reported lost or stolen.

Dual nationals

Oman does not recognise dual nationality. If you hold both British and Omani passports, the Omani authorities may confiscate one of your passports.

Visa requirements

You can visit Oman for up to 14 days without a visa.

If you overstay or do not extend your visa or residency, the Omani authorities may fine and detain you. Fines can be up to 10 Omani rials a day, with a total maximum fine of 500 rials.

Applying for a visa

To stay longer than 14 days or for work, study or other reasons, you must have a visa. To avoid the risk of refusal, it’s better to apply for a visa online before you travel – you can select the ‘unsponsored visit visa’ option if you’re a tourist.

You can also get a visit visa on arrival at an airport in Oman.

Checks at border control

At Omani border control, you must be able to show:

  • a ticket for return or onward travel
  • proof of your accommodation – for example, a hotel booking
  • proof of your travel health insurance

Vaccine requirements

You must have a certificate to prove you’ve had a yellow fever vaccination if you’re coming from Rwanda, Tanzania or a country listed as a transmission risk .

For full details about medical entry requirements and recommended vaccinations, see TravelHealthPro’s Oman guide .

Customs rules

There are strict rules about goods you can take into or out of Oman . You must declare anything that may be prohibited or subject to tax or duty.

Taking medicines into Oman

Some UK prescription and over-the-counter medicines are illegal in Oman. Carry a copy of your prescription if you’re bringing medicine. Check with Oman’s Ministry of Health well before you travel.

Urgent warning issued against travelling to 16 countries after missile barrage on Israel

TEL AVIV, ISRAEL - APRIL 14: Passengers wait following Israel closed its airspace to all domestic and international flights between 01.00-07.00 a.m. were canceled after Iran launched the attack on Israel, at Ben Gurion airport in Tel Aviv, Israel on April 14, 2024. (Photo by Nir Keidar/Anadolu via Getty Images)

Travel advice for top holiday destinations has changed amid warnings about ‘ uncontrollable regional escalation ’ in the Middle East.

Britain’s Foreign Office warned against travelling to parts of the region after Iran deployed at least  300 missiles and drones  towards Israel overnight on Saturday.

Fears of a wider conflict have been rising since October 7 and Israel’s assault on Palestinians in Gaza, and strikes on Hezbollah strongholds in Lebanon.

RAF jets were used to shoot down the missiles, part of Iran’s retaliation to Israel’s incineration of a consulate building in Syria on April 1, in which some of Iran’s top commanders were killed.

Iranian leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei warned that Israel ‘must be punished and it shall be’, but that the matter can be deemed ‘concluded’. It is yet unclear if Israel is planning to respond with power.

As a result of the rising tensions, the FCDO has updated advice for a number of countries.

Foreign Office issues urgent travel warning on 16 countries after Iran attack

People are being urged to take extra care when travelling to:

Saudi Arabia

  • United Arab Emirates

Scroll down for further information on individual countries on the list.

The Foreign Office said: ‘On April 13, 2024, Iran carried out military action against Israel.

‘Monitor this travel advice and other media as the situation is changing fast.

‘Follow and contact FCDO travel on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram. You can get email notifications when this travel advice is updated.’

It comes as foreign secretary Lord David Cameron said ‘it is right for Israel not to escalate’ after Iran’s unprecedented attack on Israel.

‘Israel has every right to respond as an independent sovereign country being attacked in this way,’ he told Times Radio.

To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video

‘But I think we’re very anxious to avoid escalation and to say to our friends in Israel it’s a time to think with with head as well as heart.

‘And in many ways this is a double defeat for Iran. Not only was their attack an almost total failure, but also the rest of the world can now see what a malign influence they are in the region and understand their true nature.

‘And so I think it is right for Israel not to escalate, but obviously they’re a sovereign, independent country and they’ll make their own decisions.’

To help British passengers, Metro.co.uk has collated all the major warnings for the region by the FCDO.

The FCDO advises against all travel to

  • the Chaambi Mountains National Park and the designated military operations zones of Mount Salloum, Mount Sammamma and Mount Mghila
  • the militarised zone south of the towns of El Borma and Dhehiba
  • within 20km of the rest of the Libya border area north of Dhehiba
  • the town of Ben Guerdane and immediate surrounding area

In addition and for security reasons, the FCDO advises against all but essential travel to:

  • within 75km of the Libyan border, including Remada, El Borma and the town of Zarzis
  • the governorate of Kasserine, including the town of Sbeitla
  • within 10km of the border with Algeria south of Kasserine governorate
  • within 30km of the border in El Kef and Jendouba governorates south of the town of Jendouba, including the archaeological site of Chemtou
  • areas north and west of the town of Ghardimaou in Jendouba governorate, including El Feidja National Park
  • within 10km of Mount Mghila
  • Mount Orbata

The FCDO advises against all travel to Lebanon. All British citizens currently in the country are encouraged to leave now while commercial options remain available.

It added: ‘The situation has potential to deteriorate quickly and with no warning.

‘Commercial routes out of Lebanon could be severely disrupted or cancelled at short notice and roads across the country could be closed.’

The FCDO advises against all travel to parts of Saudi Arabia. This includes all travel to within 10km of the border with Yemen and all but essential travel to areas between 10km and 80km from the border with Yemen.

All but essential travel to Abha International Airport in Asir province is advised against.

The FCDO advises against all travel to Jordan, within 3km of the border with Syria.

The FCDO advises against all travel to parts of Egypt.

Egypt-Libya border – within 20km of the Egypt-Libya border, except for the town of El Salloum (where we advise against all but essential travel).

North Sinai – against all travel to the Governorate of North Sinai.

Northern part of South Sinai – against all but essential travel to the northern part of the Governorate of South Sinai, beyond the St Catherine-Nuweibaa road, except for the coastal areas along the west and east of the peninsula.

The eastern part of Ismailiyah Governorate – against all but essential travel to the Ismailiyah Governorate east of the Suez Canal.

Western Desert – against all but essential travel to the area west of the Nile Valley and Nile Delta regions, except for:

  • Luxor, Qina, Aswan, Abu Simbel and the Valley of the Kings
  • the Governorate of Faiyum
  • the coastal areas between the Nile Delta and Marsa Matruh
  • the Marsa Matruh-Siwa Road
  • the oasis town of Siwa
  • the Giza Governorate north-east of the Bahariya Oasis
  • the road between Giza and Farafra (but we advise against all but essential travel on the road between Bahariya and Siwa)
  • Bahariya Oasis, Farafra, the White Desert and Black Desert

Hala’ib Triangle and Bir Tawil Trapezoid

FCDO advises against all but essential travel to the Hala’ib Triangle and the Bir Tawil Trapezoid.

The FCDO advises against all travel to areas within

  • 30km of the borders with Libya, Mauritania, Mali and Niger
  • 30km of the border with Tunisia in the provinces of Illizi and Ouargla and in the Chaambi mountains area

Foreign Office travel advice Dubai: Is it safe to travel to Dubai and Egypt - latest guidance to UK holidaymakers as Middle East tensions rise

The Foreign Office has updated its travel advice for UK tourists heading to Egypt and Dubai as tensions between Israel and Iran escalate

The UK Foreign Office has updated its travel advice for UK tourists who are heading to Egypt and Dubai as tensions between Israel and Iran rise. The Foreign Office update warns: "There is rising tension between Iran and Israel. Any military action could escalate quickly and could pose risks for the wider region. If you are in the region, or considering travel to the region, monitor news updates and continue to check FCDO travel advice for updates."

It comes as Iran launched hundreds of missiles and drones on Israel last night (Saturday 13 April) in a retaliatory attack. .It is Iran’s first direct attack on Israeli territory, setting off air rad cities across Israel including Tel Aviv and West Jerusalem last night (Saturday 13 April).

The attack wounded a seven-year-old girl and caused minor damage at an Israeli military facility. Explosions were heard as air defences intercepted the projectiles.

The Israeli military said the Iranian salvo consisted of more than 300 “killer drones, ballistic missiles and cruise missiles”, but that 99 percent were intercepted with help from forces from France, the United Kingdom and the United States. British RAF Typhoons are understood to have been involved in shooting down Iranian drones over Syria and Iraq overnight, defence sources have indicated, with confirmation expected in a statement from the Ministry of Defence later.

The Foreign Office updated its warning for Egypt creating a new section ‘Iranian military activity against Israel’. It says: “On 13 April 2024 Iran carried out military action against Israel. Monitor this travel advice and other media as the situation is changing fast. Follow and contact FCDO travel on  Twitter ,  Facebook  and  Instagram . You can also  get email notifications  when this travel advice is updated.”

The UK Foreign Office has warned Brits heading abroad about travel to 18 destinations - including Egypt and the United Arab Emirates (UAE). Dubai, Morocco, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Algeria, and Tunisia. The warning also extends to Bahrain, Kuwait, Libya, Yemen, Qatar, Iran, Iraq, Syria, Jordan, Oman, and Lebanon are all affected by the fresh update from the UK Foreign Office.

The government added that there is also a “high threat of a terrorist attack” and UK holidaymakers should “remain vigilant at all times”. It added: "UK Counter Terrorism Policing has information and advice on staying safe abroad and what to do in the event of a terrorist attack. Find out how to reduce your risk from terrorism while abroad."
