We’re very excited about our upcoming tour of Canada and we can’t wait to see you. As you may know, many Canadians have been facing food insecurities during the recent pandemic. We want to do something to address this so we’ll be working with a local food bank in each of the upcoming tour cities to collect food for them to distribute to those who most need it. We’d like to ask you each to please bring a non-perishable (e.g. canned) food item to the show. Drop-off areas will be setup outside the venue.

The band will also be making a financial donation to the food banks after every show. Thanks for helping us help others in real need. See you at the show!

Event Information

Canadian rockers BILLY TALENT will begin 2022 on a high note by returning to the stage for an incredible national Canadian tour.  The 10-date tour will consist of two legs; the first brings the band to the West Coast, while the second leg will see the band co-headline a run of 5 dates with fellow punk rockers RISE AGAINST .

The upcoming tour will come on the heels of the release of Billy Talent’s forthcoming album CRISIS OF FAITH .  The ten-track LP was produced entirely by the band’s guitarist and main songwriter, Juno-nominated producer Ian D’Sa, in the band’s Toronto studio and was mixed by the legendary Chris Lord-Alge. The album is set for release on January 21, 2022.   It has been heralded by the #1 hit singles “Reckless Paradise” and “I Beg to Differ (This Will Get Better),” along with the anthemic prog-inspired “Forgiveness I + II.”  Billy Talent’s just-released single, “End of Me,” featuring Rivers Cuomo of Weezer, is the band’s fastest ever entry into the Rock Top 10, arriving there just 10 days after the song’s release.

In addition to being available digitally, on CD and on Vinyl LP, a special limited-edition Deluxe Vinyl Package of the new album is available for pre-order. A multi-channel Dolby Atmos mix of the album will also be available digitally. Pre-order/Pre-Save CRISIS OF FAITH here .

Earlier today, the band dropped a music video for “End of Me (feat. Rivers Cuomo” that was created by UK video artist, Liam Lynch, who played all of the characters in the video.

On Rise Against's new album Nowhere Generation, released June 4th via Loma Vista Recordings, the multi-Gold and Platinum band draw a line in the sand with its blazing and aggressive punk rock and lyrics that shine a spotlight on the social and economical deck that has been stacked against our younger generations’ pursuit of The American Dream. The album debuted at the top of multiple Billboard charts with its first week sales (#1 on Rock, #3 on Top Current Albums, #3 on Vinyl, and the Top 40 of the Top 200), and the title track lead single earned the Chicago-based band their first #1 spot at Rock radio in the U.S. Nowhere Generation has earned praise and acclaim via Revolver, Consequence, LoudWire, Brooklyn Vegan,  Grammy.com , Kerrang!, American Songwriter, The Line of Best Fit, Clash, and more.

Billy Talent are one of Canada’s most successful bands.  They have sold nearly one million albums in Canada alone and nearly 3 million albums internationally.  They have won 7 Juno Awards and have been nominated 23 times, including three nods for their most recent studio album Afraid of Heights (Group of the Year, Rock Album of the Year, and Ian D’Sa for Producer of the Year). They have also been nominated for 32 MMVA Awards – taking home the prize 10 times.  In 2018 the group was honoured with the Legends of Live Special Achievement Award, presented by Canadian Music Week.  Most recently, Billy Talent have launched the Billy Talent Charitable Trust to give more back to the organizations that the band supports.

NOBRO , who  cut their teeth on the road with bands like FIDLAR and PUP, are joining for both legs of the cross Canada tour.

Possibly the only truly relevant Punk Rock band in mainstream music, Rise Against formed in the summer of 1999 and hail from Illinois, USA. Their melodic yet raging punk rock has given them several gold records in their home country and several sold out tours around the world.

The band should stand as living proof to punk rock purists that commercial success is not, and has never been, the same thing as selling out. Yes, the band’s sound is far more accessible today than the visceral hardcore of their early years.

However, if they were to take a cursory listen to the lyrics of any random song of theirs, they would be shocked to find that they are still as intelligent, profound and straight up angry as they ever were and this even stretches to the bands biggest hits.

Take songs like “Help Is on the Way", “Savior”, "Make It Stop (September's Children)" and “Prayer Of The Refugee” for example. These are polarising songs about difficult, yet very topical subjects that don’t shy away from taking a defined stance.

However the combined Youtube hits for those videos are, astonishingly enough, around 86 Million. This is a band that manages to plug the It Gets Better project, PETA and Amnesty International while filling arenas in their home country and large theaters and concert halls around the world.

To have a fully-fledged rock band with a message as vital as theirs playing on such a large scale the world over is a blessing that we haven’t had since the days of The Clash. With a tour schedule like theirs, it’s only a matter of time before they play wherever you are, and there are few bands out their more likely to change your life than the one and only Rise Against.

Live reviews

Unable to go to the Foo Fighters concert at the beginning of the year, 2015 was off to a disappointing start for my partner and I when it came to seeing Rise Against. This only continued to worsen throughout the year as we headed Stateside for a month in July, where RA had a number of tour dates across the country and absolutely none of them lined up with our travel plans - we even had plans in Chicago which were FOUR DAYS after they had a hometown gig . Heartbreaking!

So when word dropped that they were doing their own headline show Down Under in December, the only option was to go! For the last 3 months I've been listening to them flat out in anticipation of Wednesday December 2. My partner had seen these guys once before at a festival, but this was to be the popping of my RA cherry and oh my, was it fantastic! The energy and the devotion from the band, atmosphere and the love from the crowd, it was such a stellar night!

The first half of the night took me back to the days of hitting local warehouse punk gigs in the suburbs before the lights and dazzle came in to full effect in the second half of the show. Opening with recent tracks, it was a trip through memory lane for long time fans who got a solid sampler of some of the best punk rock anthems of the last 15 years. The look of sheer awe on my partner's face as the final beats of Prayer of the Refugee rang out was a stand still moment in a room full of so much energy.

A unique and chilling rendition of Redgum's I Was Only 19 kicked off a truly incredible encore as Tim stood solo on the stage, a song choice capitalising on the values and genuine nature of both the band and the fans that filled the room. The fans chorused along to an Australian treasure and goosebumps continued to prickle across the room as Tim moved in to a tale of an old porch swing, before the room swayed and reflected on the words of Swing Life Away.

The rest of the band crashed back out the night was completed with high energy, fast beats, and loud screams of whoa-oh as Rise Against closed the night with Dancing For Rain and Saviour.

The overall atmosphere of the room summarised the band's performance spectacularly, the room having been alive with the promise and delivery of an incredible show by the boys from Chicago.

My only criticism - and no fault of the boys - is that of Margaret Court. With the demise of many of Melbourne's incredible live music venues, more and more shows have taken place in arenas, stadiums, halls, and now Margaret Court. Not the first time in recent months, I have found the sound quality to be disappointing, the riffs muffled, and vocals drowned out. I'm still unsure whether I just got 'used' to the quality, of it there was some improvement through the evening, but there is definitely a lot of room for improvement from the venue itself in regard to supporting bands deliver memorable shows.

I was lucky enough to see rock band Rise Against live at Rock am Ring in 2010. They were loud, heavy, and fun.

They instantly launched into the hardest song that they could find and did not let up for anything until the end of the set. They did not build up, they did not wait, they just played hard, jamming, fast, fun music for everyone that was there to rock. The crowd loved it and cheered and head banged to their intense, hard music as hard as they could. It was an excellent experience.

Everyone loved the music and the band's intense nature, refusing to let up or to slow down. They kept going and going, getting louder and harder until it was impossible to get any louder or any harder. The audience really loved them and so did I. They actively engaged with us and made it a fun, engaging show to be a part of.

They refused to be outdone and rocked as hard as humanly possible, while we the audience tried our best to keep up. It was an amazing show and I highly recommend any one that is interested see a Rise Against show as soon as they can.

They completely messed up the sound mix for the first third of the show. To try and compensate for this, the singer had to try and sing harder and just ended up stuffing up the songs instead.

Luckily once the acoustic set started about a third of the way into the concert they fixed the mix and the rest of the concert was awesome.

I hope next time they play this doesn't happen. To quote one of my friends, he described the first part of the concert as 'terrible' and I would have to agree.

I was hoping they'd sing A Gentlemen's Coup or From Heads Unworthy but it didn't sound like they did, though if they did play it in the first third of the concert, I'm not sure I would have noticed as it really was that terrible you couldn't hear anything.

As usual, Rise Against were a great live act with excellent stage presence. However, they were let down by horrible sound. I'm not sure whether the sound technician was deaf, or had ear plugs AND ear muffs on, because the sound was far too loud. Vocals were drowned out and distorted, let alone the guitar tracks being just full of noise. Even the acoustic songs they played were completely trashed by distortion. If I was Rise Against, I would be terribly angry at their promoter/sound technician.

Anyway, the show itself was great. Tim had a great command of the audience, and stirred a positive buzz. Its hard to say much else about the show when the sound was so screwed - considering the music is mainly what you go to a gig for!

Being the last show on the national tour, by the time the boys hit Brisbane Tim’s voice was shot. We initially thought it was the sound system but sadly no. Despite this he busted his arse belting out a great mix of new and old.

The drumming , usually the glue of the Band was off tempo and tired with the usual frenetic double beats replaced by a more subdued almost offbeat rhythm.

Lead guitar lacked usual punch and often found himself mid stage nowhere near a mic when it was his turn to vocally support Tim requiring a quick sprint into position. Stayed for the acoustic set which showcased Tim wonderfully then off to the Ship Inn to lament an off night for a usually brilliant act

Such a fun night!

Nearly got caught in the mosh pit TWICE, bearing in mind I'm 5'2 and don't have a death wish we moved the heck away from there but the whole atmosphere was so amusing and bubbly. Even Tim (lead singer) said that he likes how this crowd can even crowd surf to their slow acoustic songs :D

The band was fantastic! The opening acts were so much better than I anticipated. The fans were hilarious and kind, the really tall guys would let us in front, two guys who didn't even know eachother wound up climbing on eachother's backs - if you're looking for a concert with great fans, atmosphere and music, go to a Rise Against concert you will not be disappointed!

First gig I've ever walked out on during the headliner. Being used to metal shows, where all the metalheads look out for eachother & mosh in the centre but leave the rest alone, this is not like that. I was in the 3rd from front row, when the band came on the front 7 rows became a crunch of people all pushing the people at the front into the fence, you had no choice but to be squashed into a pulp of people & couldn't see anything but bodies even when 6ft tall right at the front. Worst experience I've ever had at a concert, having been to 3 heavy metal concerts the same week. Stay further back or don't go atall, my experience really put me off & wasted my money.

Rise against was phenomenal live. This was the first concert I've gone to, where I left feeling completely satisfied. I didn't need anything else for the rest of the night. I had a smile on my face for the entire show. And it was so clear the band was happy to be there. There was one time where he paused his song when the words "all because of you" we're sang. He said something to the tone of "we are here, all because of you. Come on repeat it" and the entire venue was singing "all because of you." It was pretty magical. Great concert, one of the best I've seen in a while.

This was a first time Rise Against gig for me. I have been in Prague for 10 months and needed to get a Rock fix. Rise Against delivered.

The support acts were forgettable other than the novelty of Japanese band wearing wolf heads.

If you like your mainstream/skater punk hybrid with a tinge of politicism then Rise Against are for you. The sound is loud, the vocals in tune and the band are tight. They played with passion and energy and certainly made for an enjoyable night.

tom-millinchip’s profile image

A very fun and exciting show. Saw them in The Fillmore Silver Spring and given how small the venue was, it was very packed and hot, but the energy was insanely high and was a great show the entire time.

The other two bands that played, letlive. and Killswitch Engage, made the night for me. I did not expect much of from those two groups, but the exceeded expectations and were very high energy as well.

Also, my favorite song was played early in the set which made me ecstatic.

Designs For Life: Celebrating The Art Of Punk

Back to the basement: 10 diy music venues and the scenes they launched, the greatest debut 45 records in history.

Nowhere Generation arrived on June 4 via Loma Vista Recordings. The record finds Rise Against blurring the line between blazing and aggressive punk rock and lyrics that shine a spotlight on the social and economical climate that younger generations find themselves navigating in the pursuit of The American Dream.

Last month, Rise Against shared the Nowhere Sessions EP , a six-track live expansion of the album that captures and celebrates the anthemic intensity of the band’s renowned performances. Singles from the EP included “Talking to Ourselves (Nowhere Sessions)” and a cover of Creedence Clearwater Revival ’s “Fortunate Son.”

The upcoming tour will come on the heels of the release of Billy Talent’s forthcoming album  CRISIS OF FAITH .  The ten track LP was produced entirely by the band’s guitarist and main songwriter, Juno-nominated producer Ian D’Sa, in the band’s Toronto studio and was mixed by the legendary Chris Lord-Alge.   The album is set for release on  January 21, 2022 .

On Rise Against’s new album Nowhere Generation, released June 4th via Loma Vista Recordings, the multi-Gold and Platinum band draw a line in the sand with its blazing and aggressive punk rock and lyrics that shine a spotlight on the social and economical deck that has been stacked against our younger generations’ pursuit of The American Dream. The album debuted at the top of multiple Billboard charts with its first week sales (#1 on Rock, #3 on Top Current Albums, #3 on Vinyl, and the Top 40 of the Top 200) and the title track lead single earned the Chicago-based band their first #1 spot at Rock radio in the U.S.

Each of PUP’s three albums (their self-titled debut in 2013, 2016’s  The Dream Is Over , and 2019’s  Morbid Stuff ), has been a meticulously curated work that has taken its respective toll on the band. “We’ve all individually and collectively lost our minds in the undertaking that is our creative process,” says guitarist Steve Sladkowski. “I’m not trying to make it sound like it’s some Herculean thing, but the way in which we work is such that it involves a lot of stress.” And their hard work has paid off, landing them on Best of the Year lists from outlets like Pitchfork  and  Rolling Stone . For  This Place Sucks Ass , however, they say it was relieving to let loose and put something into the world that values pleasure over perfection.

NOBRO , who cut their teeth on the road with bands like FIDLAR and PUP, are joining for both legs of the cross Canada tour.

Rise Against and Deftones on Summer Tour Setlist

rise against tour toronto

“We are the wolves at the wall. We break in like a waterfall, yeah” – Rise Against,’Wolves’.

Rise Against are currently on the road for their 2017 North American summer tour in support of the band’s brand new release ‘Wolves’. The 21-city run with fellow rockers Deftones and Thrice kicked off in Chicago on June 9th and will wrap up in Phoenix on July 9th at the Ak-Chin Pavilion.

Deftones kicked off their set at the Toronto stop of the ‘Wolves’ tour with ‘Heads’ and ‘My Own Summer (Shove It)’ and ‘Lhabia’ from their 1997 release ‘Around the Fur’. The California natives wrapped up their 14-song set with ‘Rock Skates’ from their 2010 release ‘Diamond Eyes’.

Rise Against opened their set at Toronto’s Budweiser stage with their 2006 single ‘Ready to Fall’ from their fourth studio album ‘The Sufferer & the Witness’. Their 12-song set list included ‘The Good Left Undone’, ‘Re-Education (Through Labor)’, ‘Satellite’ and brand new tracks from ‘Wolves’, including ‘The Violence’, ‘Welcome to the Breakdown’, and the self titled single. The night was concluded with an encore of ‘Savior’, from the rock band’s fifth studio album ‘Appeal to Reason’.

Rise Against is nearing their 17 year anniversary as a band and are still going strong. Their latest studio album ‘Wolves’ was released on the current summer tour’s kick-off date, June 9th. Rise Against frontman Tim McIlrath commented on the current tour to NME recently, “Every time we play with Deftones, we play better; they’re just such a good band. And so when we play with them we walk out there challenged by them, they throw down the gauntlet and say, ‘What have you got?’. Whether we go on before or after them, it’ll always be this kind of challenge, and they’re just one of those inspiring bands that do that. And so it’s going to be Rise Against at the top of our game.”

2024 global box office projection revised upwards by analysts on eve of cinemacon, breaking news.

As The Box Office Battles Back, Is No. 1 Circuit AMC About To Buckle? Don’t Bet Against Adam Aron … At Least Not Yet – CinemaCon

By Jill Goldsmith , Anthony D'Alessandro , Nancy Tartaglione

AMC Entertainment CEO Adam Aron

With hits like Dune: Part Two, Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire and Kung Fu Panda 4, the domestic box office may finally be shaking off the ashes from the double strikes, now counting close to $1.8 billion, with moviegoing gaining momentum.

We told you quite early — at last year’s CinemaCon — that the strike clouds were bound to send a monsoon across the business, and indeed they did.

NATO Chief Michael O’Leary & MPA Boss Charlie Rivkin Talk An Industry “Sorting Out” As CinemaCon Kicks Off

Global Box Office projections 2024

Not so — or not anytime soon

To riff off Mark Twain, the reports of AMC’s death have been greatly exaggerated. Alamo Drafthouse is shopping itself and has been for some months, and for a high price, Deadline hears. But no major exhibitors are expected to fold — at least just yet. Studios bosses were expecting shoes to drop by this point in time as circuits do not have the Covid bailout money to account for losses from the strikes.

From what we hear, there aren’t any exhibitors behind in rental payments to major studios.

Save unforeseen events, and assuming the release schedule truly revives and the box office cooperates, the industry could emerge on the other side. Again, this not Covid, which pushed Regal parent Cineworld into bankruptcy in the fall of 2022. It re-emerged last year a private company, having shed most of its debt and a number of theaters.

“Can you imagine if AMC filed for bankruptcy to do a reorganization of its theaters? The retail investors would riot,” exclaimed one Wall Street insider.

Many retail shareholders whose stakes gets diluted each time more stock is issued remain disgruntled, so that honeymoon has been over for a while despite many of them holding the stock. There’s enough agia that Aron felt he needed to justify his newly reported pay package in post on X on Friday, something other entertainment CEOs never do.

“Our draft proxy shows I was awarded AMC stock in 2023 (that I can not sell any time soon) valued using SEC required methodology at $17.9 million. At yesterday’s closing share price, it is actually worth $1,345,000. So my compensation — valued presently — was $16.5 million less,” he wrote.

Sources generally noted the benefits of bankruptcy to any circuit since it allows them to close underperforming theaters and drop lousy leases. Distribution insiders say AMC could afford to shed 100-150 theaters and it would only help the bottom line. Of course, but there’s a big cost to bankruptcy — a lot of people get hurt, shareholders are wiped out — and Aron has proved himself “able to pull rabbits out of hats,” a few people noted.

The looming issue for AMC debt-wise is the $2-plus billion that comes due in 2026. The exhibitor will need to renegotiate with lenders, and likely push out the maturity. It has lenders who have been supportive of the company in the past.

“The major point worth making on AMC is that they are hyper-aware of the debt they have coming due. They need to prepare for that. And they have done an exemplary job re-negotiating the terms of a lot of their debt payments,” says Alicia Reese of Wedbush Securities.

Any upside in the box office would benefit AMC disproportionately since it has the largest Imax footprint and much of moviegoing is gravitating to premium formats. Like other exhibitors, it’s seeing higher concession revenue and exploring alternative content. It pushed into distribution last year with concert films. Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour delivered a punch to the global box office (a majority of that stateside) to a starved theatrical schedule last fall. The exhibitor, which also released Renaissance: A Film by Beyoncé , has said it hopes to do more.

So studios bosses might be looking at AMC cockeyed, but Wall Street is more sanguine. “It can certainly “limp along for a while,” says Roth MKM analyst Eric Handler, who has a sell rating on the stock. Ratings agencies Moody’s and S&P both seems to agree, though they also both called the debt capital structure untenable in the long term.

AMC reduced the principal balance of its debt by $448 million last year. Free cash flow was negative $149 million for the fourth quarter. After equity raises last year, the company ended 2023 with a $885 million in cash. Plus another $250 million-worth, if it gets it, AMC can pull through to the fourth quarter when strong tentpoles like Joker: Folie à Deux, Venom: The Last Dance, Red One, Gladiator 2 , Moana 2, Sonic the Hedgehog 3 and Mufasa arrive. The recent stock sale announcement spooked the market a bit, but Aron has said on numerous earnings calls that in a volatile industry it’s crucial to be prudent and have cash on hand.

Ratings agency Moody’s, in a report on AMC earlier this year, called North America over-screened with the current 40,000-45,00 screens probably needing to shrink to 20,000-30,000, saying “the industry will eventually have to shrink to bring supply into equilibrium with moviegoing demand.” AMC has reduced its theater count to 904, from 1,000 back in 2019, it said.

“Most of the industry’s reduction will likely occur in smaller metropolitan markets or among mid- to lower-tier cinema operators as weaker players exit or get acquired by larger operators that consolidate and restructure the industry,” Moody’s wrote. “As leases on theater properties come up for renewal, we expect exhibitors will exit underperforming locations.”

AMC’s ancillary businesses include branded popcorn sold in retail stores, and its own branded candy. It invested in a silver mine a few years ago. It continues to get a licensing fee from Sauda Arabia movie theaters it sold in early 2023. These won’t really move the needle. The company’s debt, like Cineworld’s, was swelled by a string of acquisitions. That’s had some wondering if an asset sale might be an option to pay down out a big chunk — maybe Odeon Cinemas in the UK. Others say yes, there are occasional theater sales, but prices are very low. No one wants to sell at the bottom.

In regards to more concert movies, the question remains how profitable they were for AMC. Sources figure a 4% rental on both Eras Tour and Renaissance , the latter of which underdelivered at the domestic box office with a final $39M domestic take despite a notable $21.8M opening.

In terms of the AMC experiment with The Eras Tour release into cinemas, one exhibition exec says, “It’s important to stress that our business is movies, not Taylor Swift concerts. They’re great to have but it did a fraction of what Dune would have done had it stayed on the weekend.”

“ Barbie was the biggest Warner Bros movie in 100 years — how much evidence do people need to show that our customers are desperate for movies?”

As more tentpoles arrive on marquees, the anticipation is that theatrical will boom again.

“The hope is that January and February were the slowest months of the year,” says Reese. March popped a bit. April depends on Civil War , which is eyeing a $20M opening. “The rest of the tentpole films throughout the year look really strong. The fourth quarter will be much better, and sail into a really strong 2025.”

Splashed Wells Fargo in a recent note upgrading the third-largest circuit Cinemark to buy from sell: “Movies Are Back.”

MLB insiders “pretty worried” by rise in arm injuries to top young starting pitchers

PITTSBURGH, PA - AUGUST 07: Spencer Strider #99 of the Atlanta Braves reacts in the third inning after being pulled after giving up 6 runs on 5 hits against the Pittsburgh Pirates during the game at PNC Park on August 7, 2023 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. (Photo by Justin K. Aller/Getty Images)

Matt Blake texted Cleveland Guardians pitcher Shane Bieber a conciliatory message over the weekend. As a member of the Cleveland player-development system in the 2010s, Blake aided Bieber’s rise from college walk-on to unanimous American League Cy Young Award winner in 2020. For a time, Bieber represented the modern model for the manufacturing of a big-league ace, a player who added strength to his frame, velocity to his fastball and spin to his offspeed pitches as he ascended the ranks.

By the time Blake sent his text, though, Bieber had become part of a growing, more troubling demographic: talented young pitchers who will spend this season as spectators. Two days after the Miami Marlins announced 20-year-old phenom Eury PĂ©rez would undergo Tommy John surgery, the Guardians disclosed Bieber, 28, would need the same procedure. A recent examination of 25-year-old Atlanta Braves starter Spencer Strider revealed damage to his elbow’s ulnar collateral ligament, which could result in his second Tommy John surgery. In New York, where Blake is now the Yankees pitching coach, the team has lost its ace, Gerrit Cole , until June with elbow inflammation and one of its top relievers, Jonathan Loaisiga , to year-ending elbow surgery.

“As a pitching coach trying to get through nine innings worth of pitching every night over 162 games,” Blake said, “I’m pretty worried.”

Pitching has always been hazardous for its practitioners. There is reason to believe it is only getting more challenging to keep them healthy. The opening days of the 2024 season have demonstrated the inherent fragility of the position. A recent story by The Ringer cited research from former MLB trainer Stan Conte that tallied 263 UCL surgeries in 2023, a steady uptick from 111 procedures performed in 2011. Of the 166 players who began the season on the injured list, as the New York Post reported , 132 were pitchers. If these trends continue, 2024 will be another banner year for arm injuries — and cause for alarm around the game.

The subject prompted sniping between Major League Baseball and the MLBPA on Saturday, as the two sides argued through press releases about the effect of the pitch clock, which was introduced in 2023 and shortened for 2024. MLBPA chief Tony Clark painted the league’s insistence on cutting time off the clock before the 2024 season against the wishes of players as “an unprecedented threat to our game.” MLB countered by citing unpublished analysis from Johns Hopkins University that found no link between the introduction of the clock and the surge of injuries.

The clock, however, was just one area of concern among players, coaches and managers surveyed by The Athletic this weekend. Those conversations presented a tapestry of additional reasons for the injury problem, including the industry’s relentless push for optimization, the encouragement of players to chase maximum velocity and spin, and the usage of training methods that encourage year-round, full-throttle workouts. To some, the explanations are interwoven and intractable. Untangling the knot may require years of research and re-evaluation.

“To protect these guys’ arms is paramount,” Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said. “And clearly we haven’t nailed it.”

This season began with baseball’s most heralded pitchers on the shelf. Los Angeles Dodgers starter Clayton Kershaw underwent shoulder surgery last October. Texas Rangers pitcher Max Scherzer is recovering from back surgery, while his teammate Jacob deGrom is rehabbing from a second Tommy John surgery. Houston Astros ace Justin Verlander experienced shoulder soreness in spring training. All those pitchers are 35 and older, the sort of age where the body no longer cooperates with the rigors of the big-league schedule.

For MLB, the more pressing concern is the fleet of arms breaking down soon after reaching prominence. Miami Marlins starter Sandy AlcĂĄntara , the unanimous winner of the 2022 National League Cy Young Award, underwent elbow reconstruction last season. So did Tampa Bay Rays pitcher Shane McClanahan , a little more than a year after starting the All-Star Game. Milwaukee Brewers pitcher Brandon Woodruff will miss this season because of shoulder surgery. Same story for Kansas City Royals pitcher Kyle Wright , a 21-game winner for Atlanta in 2022.

“Our sport deserves our best pitchers to be on the mound,” Detroit Tigers manager A.J. Hinch said. “Regardless of the era you’re in, the starting pitcher matchup is the first thing you look at every day. You want the big boys out there. You want the guys that are elite, and more and more are getting hurt.”

To research the problem, MLB commissioned a study last October, which has sprawled to include conversations with 100 people around the game, including medical officials. When the study is completed, the league intends to create a task force and provide recommendations to clubs about how to keep pitchers healthy.

The sport has grappled with the problem since its inception.   In another era, pitchers were believed to get hurt by overuse. Teams altered how they used pitchers in hopes of preserving them. Gone are the days of the exhausted starter, pushed to the brink at 125 pitches or more, trying to finish the seventh or eighth inning. The new archetype asks the pitcher not to ease into outings but explode at the outset. Go as hard as you can for as long as you can , is the new mantra. An influx of data about the shape and movement of pitches offered teams granular ways to make pitchers better. The data did not, however, offer an answer for how to keep them healthier.

“I’ve heard through my years managing that we ask less out of starting pitchers because we don’t leave them in the game long enough and they don’t throw 100 pitches as much anymore,” Hinch said. “Yet we ask them for max velo, max shape, max everything, and virtually train year-round.”

Hinch pointed to Tarik Skubal , a 27-year-old Tigers lefty who underwent Tommy John surgery in college and flexor tendon surgery in 2022. Skubal trained this past winter so that when he arrived at spring training, he touched 99 mph in his first session of live batting practice. “Go to Tarik Skubal and tell him, ‘Hey, ease it off and throw 92 mph,’ and see how that works out for you,” Hinch said. “No. Because we’re asking our athletes to compete at the highest level.”

To some retired players, the quest for elevated velocity and spin has put pitchers at risk. Dan Haren, a 13-year veteran who now works as a pitching strategist for the Arizona Diamondbacks , posted on X about his Instagram feed providing footage of “guys throwing weighted balls at max effort against a wall, with a crow hop, with his bros cheering him on.” Added Roberts, “The body is designed, in my opinion, to only take so much force and velocity before it gives way.”

rise against tour toronto

Some, like Chicago Cubs manager Craig Counsell, suggested pitchers will always try to throw harder. “I don’t think the pursuit of velocity is ever going to end,” Counsell said. “Because it’s something that makes pitchers better. I don’t think we should demonize the pursuit of velocity.”

Yet the industry has championed this trend by shortening the outings of starting pitchers and encouraging them to maximize their output. Not only do pitchers throw their fastballs as hard as possible, they throw offspeed pitches with utmost force, in hopes of generating unique movement and missing bats. “The types of deliveries that create the outlier shapes are probably more stressful in some ways,” Blake said. “I think the maximization of force to create the shapes probably doesn’t help. When you’re chasing 20 inches of break or 20 inches of ride or the high velo, I think there is some level of physical cost.”

Despite protestations from MLB officials, players will continue to complain about the clock. The innovation trimmed 24 minutes off the average game last season. The timer in 2023 granted pitchers 15 seconds to act with the bases empty and 20 with runners aboard. MLB’s 11-man competition committee voted to shave two seconds off the 20-second clock for 2024 despite objections from the players.

Los Angeles Angels pitcher Tyler Anderson suggested pitchers might place more stress on their arm rather than their legs because of the clock. But he doubted any study could show a correlation between decreased time between pitches and increased injuries. The act of pitching was already unhealthy enough. “Rob Manfred knows it’s really hard to prove, would be my guess,” Anderson said.

The union sees the clock as a bogeyman. The commissioner’s office sees their complaint as a straw man. For coaches like Blake, who must navigate the season as injuries continue, the clock is only part of the problem, along with the perilous chase of velocity and spin.

“I don’t think any of them are the most responsible,” Blake said. “But the cocktail of them all is hard to get by.”

The Athletic’s Fabian Ardaya, Sam Blum, Patrick Mooney, Cody Stavenhagen contributed reporting.

US small-caps suffer worst run against larger stocks in over 20 years

US small-cap stocks are suffering their worst run of performance relative to large companies in more than 20 years, highlighting the extent to which investors have chased megacap technology stocks while smaller groups are weighed down by high interest rates.

The Russell 2000 index has risen 24 per cent since the beginning of 2020, lagging behind the S&P 500’s more than 60 per cent gain over the same period. The gap in performance shakes up a long-term historical norm in which fast-growing small-caps have tended to deliver punchier returns for investors who can stomach the higher volatility.

The unusually wide spread between the two closely watched indices has opened up in recent years as small-cap stocks with relatively weak balance sheets and modest pricing power have been especially hurt by high inflation and a steep rise in borrowing costs, according to analysts, putting off many investors.

“I’ve been investing in small-caps for almost 30 years and you haven’t seen big money moving into the space since 2016 or 2017,” said Greg Tuorto, a small-cap portfolio manager at Goldman Sachs Asset Management.

“You need a little greed, you need some of those animal spirits, maybe a pick-up in M&A [mergers and acquisitions] or a booming IPO market, for small-caps to really take off,” he added.

The S&P has climbed steadily since early November, with strong earnings and investor excitement about the artificial intelligence boom driving huge gains for the likes of Nvidia and Meta.

In contrast, the small-cap rally that gathered pace in the final months of 2023 has petered out this year, expanding an already wide gap in performance. Utilities and telecoms groups such as broadband company Gogo, Vertex Energy and Middlesex Water are among stocks that have been hit.

Column chart of Russel 2000 - S&P 500 (annual percentage change) showing Small-caps endure worst run relative to large-caps since the late 1990s

Aside from a brief period of outperformance in 2020 during the early stages of the coronavirus pandemic, small-cap stocks have lagged behind their larger peers since 2016.

In the 2000s, before global interest rates sank to close to zero following the financial crisis, thinly traded and under-analysed stocks had on average outperformed the biggest companies. Analysts attribute this pattern to a combination of market inefficiency and the explosive growth potential of tomorrow’s market leaders.

“When you get small-caps right, you’re not right by 20 per cent more than the Street, your earnings and revenue estimates could be double where the consensus is . . . That leads to a more significant price gain,” said Tuorto, whose portfolio is dominated by stocks including Shake Shack and Wingstop, as well as retailers.

Although there are signs that the equity market rally is beginning to broaden out beyond the biggest tech stocks, stubborn inflation and a resilient jobs market have recently contributed to an acceptance among traders that interest rates may stay higher for longer than they had anticipated just a few months ago.

In a worst-case scenario where the Federal Reserve is forced to keep rates on hold for months to come or even raise them, smaller companies are likely to be the hardest hit. Roughly 40 per cent of debt on Russell 2000 balance sheets is short-term or floating rate, compared with about 9 per cent for S&P companies.

Fourth-quarter earnings for Russell 2000 companies, about 30 per cent of which are unprofitable, fell 17.6 per cent year on year, according to LSEG data. Earnings for S&P companies, in contrast, rose by about 4 per cent, although a large portion of the gain was driven by the so-called Magnificent Seven tech stocks.

Line chart of Index price performance (rebased) showing Small-caps have lagged large-caps

However, barring a recession, small-cap profits are expected to improve as rates start to come down. Fed chair Jay Powell last week left rates unchanged and signalled a preference to cut by three-quarters of a percentage point this year, pushing the Russell 2000 up by a percentage point more than the S&P on the day.

“If [small-cap] earnings pick up, people will buy the stocks,” said David Lefkowitz, head of US equities in UBS’s chief investment office. “And earnings should pick up.”

Analysts on average expect 14 per cent earnings growth for Russell 2000 companies this year.

“Access to capital is improving, financial conditions have eased, the high-yield markets are wide open and equity issuance is really picking up,” Lefkowitz said.

For Jill Carey Hall, US equity strategist and head of US small and mid-cap strategy at Bank of America, the lower valuations of small-caps bode well for returns. The sector has historically traded at similar multiples to the S&P 500, but thanks to the surge in large-caps in recent months is now trading at a near-record discount.

“The only other time you’ve seen relative multiples this cheap was during 1999 and 2000, and that ended up being a great decade for small-caps,” she said.
