In Italy there are two companies that run the high speed train from Rome to Florence: Trenitalia and Italo Treno.

Trenitalia is the state-run railway agency and its bullet trains are called “Freccia”, which can be Frecciarossa, Frecciabianca and Frecciargento. Onboard, you have a snack bar, toilets and WiFi. Some Frecciabianca trains don’t have WiFi, usually the old ones. Trenitalia also includes regional and local trains and reaches all the Italian regions also stopping in small stations.

Usually, Trenitalia’s train from Rome to Florence is a Freccia, either Frecciarossa or Frecciargento, and they are the fastest. Sometimes, you can also find an Intercity or a combination of two regional trains with a change in another city. These take from 3 hours and a half to about 5 hours and a half.

Italo Treno is a more recent private company and has a more limited list of destinations. Usually, they stop in the main cities and they are gradually increasing their network.

I tried both and even though I had heard great feedback about Italo Treno, I myself still prefer Trenitalia. I found Trenitalia trains are more comfortable, seats have more legroom, and bathrooms were larger.

Rome To Florence Train: Where To Take It From

You can take the train to Florence from Rome’s main stations such as Roma Termini and Roma Tiburtina. Rome has several other large train stations like Trastevere, Ostiense and San Pietro, so if you are staying close to any of them, to take the train to Florence you will need to get to Roma Termini.

Trenitalia usually leaves from Roma Termini, while Italo Treno leaves from both Termini and Tiburtina stations. Termini is a very big station and to access the platform you need to show your ticket and ID. Get there early enough to see what’s your platform from the big screen of the departures and then in case there is a line at your entrance.

If you are just landing and want to head directly to Florence , two high-speed trains per day go that route.

Train Schedule Rome To Florence

There are several trains departing from Rome to Florence every day. Italo Treno starts as early as 5.40 am from Termini station and stops at 5.50 in Tiburtina before carrying on towards Firenze Santa Maria Novella station. Trenitalia starts at 5.10 am from Termini station with the Frecciarossa bullet train.

The train schedule from Rome to Florence changes depending on the season and the day. During the week, there are more trains than at the weekend. We suggest you check closer to the planned date of your travel from Rome to Florence to see all the timetables.

Rome To Florence Train Cost

If you book a couple of weeks from a month in advance, you will find much cheaper train tickets from Rome to Florence. Trenitalia fares also change depending on the service (Standard, Premium, Silence areas, Executive, Working area, etc) and the offer (Base, Economy, Super Economy, Senior, etc).

Trenitalia has slightly higher prices and also better services and options, but for just an hour and a half train ride, you would probably just opt for the cheapest fares you can find.

A ticket with Trenitalia can cost as little as €12.90 for the first trains of the day to reach 31,90, 34,90 up to €44,90 on the later trains with the Frecciadays fares. Depending on the class and fare you choose (Standard, Premium, Business, Executive), the price will vary. Depending on the time of the day and the class, prices with Trenitalia range between 50€ for the Standard ticket to 145€ for the Executive class.

With Italo Treno prices go from as little as €9.90 for the Smart fare to 120€ for the Salotto Executive Class. The middle fares include Prima and Club Executive and prices range between €55,90 and €75,90.

Train Tickets From Rome To Florence: Where to Book and Where to Buy Them

The easiest way to book your train tickets from Rome to Florence is online. If you check out Omio , you will find prices and schedules for both Trenitalia and Italo Treno. Booking online allows you to purchase your ticket much in advance and find better prices and a wider choice of seats available.

You can also buy your train ride from the ticket office at the station but with the possibility of paying more. However, if you have just decided last-minute to take a day trip from Rome to Florence , go for it, it’s always worth it.

You are not going to find these tickets at the local newsagents scattered around the city, but in each train station, you will either find the ticket offices or vending machines for all tickets all over Italy.

Your Rome To Florence Train Journey: What To Expect

Onboard, there are snack bars as well as carts that sell food and drinks, but you can also bring your own food.

I rarely buy food and drinks on the train as they do not have much choice (I am a little fussy though, I always want whole-grain, sugar-free, etc.) and prices are high. Usually, I bring my own homemade meal or I buy something at the station rather than on the train. Both Termini and Tiburtina have excellent eateries and restaurants that provide takeaway services.

This being said, the ride is very short, and if you are going to arrive around lunchtime, you should better try one of the traditional restaurants in Florence easy to reach from Santa Maria Novella train station.

Both Trenitalia and Italo trains have room for your luggage, either in the space above your head, which is safe as it closes, between seats if you carry a small trolley, or at the ends of your carriages if you have larger suitcases. These are unsupervised, so you might not want to pack your valuables even though it’s pretty safe. I myself left my luggage there more than once and never lost anything.

You must ensure your luggage is adequately accommodated so as not to pose a risk or damage to objects, people, and animals, and it should not obstruct the train’s entrance and exit, circulation within the carriage, or the onboard service operations.

It states that the company allows passengers to carry luggage and other easily transportable objects free of charge, including strollers, umbrellas, beach chairs, skis, musical instruments, etc., provided they are placed in dedicated spaces within the train.

Luggage exceeding the permitted volume is tolerated as long as it does not cause inconvenience or harm to other passengers, interfere with the train staff’s service activities, or damage the carriages.

The company prohibits the transport of malodorous substances that may disturb other passengers, as well as dangerous or harmful substances. However, materials or equipment that include hazardous accessories in their structure or operation circuit are allowed, provided all measures are taken to prevent any leakage during transport.

Bicycles can be transported free of charge on all trains, provided they are disassembled and stored in a bag or if they are foldable bicycles. The transportation of assembled bicycles is only allowed on certain Intercity trains, and a ticket must be purchased for this purpose.

The ruins of Rome hark back to its days as the then-capital of civilization over 2,000 years ago, while Florence flourished much later as the birthplace of the Renaissance. Both cities boast art, churches, history, and cuisine unlike anywhere else in the world, and a visit to both is standard for most travelers coming to Italy .

Thankfully, Rome and Florence are easily connected by the train and you can reach one from the other in under two hours. The bus takes more than twice as long, but it's the cheapest way to move between them. A car is fun to explore the Tuscan countryside and for day trips, but it's a headache to have in the city. There are also direct flights, but they're pricey and end up taking longer than the train.

What Is the Cheapest Way to Get From Rome to Florence?

Travelers on a budget can use the bus for travel to Florence for dirt cheap prices on FlixBus , sometimes for as low as $10. It takes about two to three hours longer than the train, but it's a viable option when euros are running short, especially for last-minute plans. Trains and buses both go up in price as your travel date gets closer, but if you're flexible with your departure time, you can often find bus tickets for under $20 even for same-day trips.

Less expensive regional trains are also an option, but they take two to four hours and do not have reserved seats.

Trenitalia trains leave from Termini and Tiburtina stations in Rome, while Italo trains depart from Tiburtina and Ostiense stations. If you're staying in Rome near Termini or Ostiense, choose the respective company that serves that station in order to avoid crossing the entire city with all of your luggage.

All trains arrive in Florence Santa Maria Novella Station —sometimes written as "Firenze SMN"—the main station of the Tuscan capital. This accessible city is easily traversed on foot, although taxis are allowed to enter the car-free city center if you need to haul luggage to your hotel.

You won't need a car in Florence, and in fact, you can't even bring your vehicle into the historic city center, so having a car can actually be more of a headache than it's worth. Florence is one of those cities that seems to be always packed with tourists, so the best time to visit is really a question of visiting when the city is busy or very busy . Late spring to early fall is the high season, especially the summer months when it's full of study abroad students and the temperatures are uncomfortably hot. Winter and early spring are when there are fewer tourists but the weather is more likely to be cold and rainy. To balance out crowds with the climate, aim for a trip in March or April, making sure to avoid the week leading up to Easter when most schools are on break.

The easiest way to travel from the airport to Florence is via the Volainbus, which shuttles passengers directly to the Florence Train Station. Since only taxis are allowed in the historic center, you'll need to take a cab if you want door-to-door service. The taxi fare from the airport is a set price that varies based on the time of day, but it starts at 22 euros—or about $26—for daytime rides, plus a small supplement for pieces of luggage.

If you’re choosing to fly, be sure to factor in the cost of airport transfers and all the additional transit time that comes with air travel, to be sure it’s best for your trip.

ITA Airways is the main airline with services from Rome to Florence.

Planes depart from the Leonardo da Vinci–Fiumicino Airport (FCO) and arrive at the Florence Airport (FLR) in just 55-minutes . 

Ticket cost

Expect to pay around €75 for a one-way flight from Rome to Florence . If you need to check a bag or have a specific departure time in mind, expect to pay more.

The train is the most popular way to get from Rome to Florence. There are dozens of departures daily so you’ll have lots of flexibility in your timing. 

Railway options

Italiarail, Italo, and Trenitalia are the main railway providers with comfortable and reliable services to Florence. 

These trains depart from Roma Termini, the main train station in Rome’s city center, starting around 5:30 a.m. and arrive at the Santa Maria Novella Station in Florence well into the late evening. 

Amenities, travel times, and departures/arrivals will vary depending on the provider, but they’re pretty comparable in terms of comfortability and cost.

Italo alone has 30 trains daily to Florence, add that to the dozens of routes from Trenitalia and Italiarail, and you have plenty of options to choose from.

High speed trains vs. commuter trains

There are two different types of trains that service the route from Rome to Florence: high-speed and commuter.

The high-speed routes are specifically tailored for tourists to get to Florence as quickly as possible and are direct. These are the preferred services for traveling between Rome and Florence. 

The commuter trains cater to locals, make more frequent stops, take much longer, but are a bit more budget-friendly than the high-speed services. You can expect a ride to take 3 hours and 30 minutes.

Trenitalia and Italiarail offer both high speed and commuter trains. Italo is privately owned and only offers high-speed trains.

The fastest train from Rome to Florence takes 1 hour and 36 minutes .

How to book : You can book train tickets at Roma Termini Station when you arrive or book online, in advance through Italo , Italiarail , or Trenitalia . We recommend booking online as it’s super easy to search routes and book anytime.

Insider Tip: You can use the Trenitalia app to book your train tickets up to immediately before boarding. Just be sure you enter the train station names in Italian. The main station in central Florence is Santa Maria Novella, listed as ‘Firenze S. M. Novella.’ Rome is ‘Roma – Termini.’  

Good to know : Italo high-speed routes must be booked in advance as it’s a privately-owned company.

Prices for the regional/commuter trains start at €21.75 for a one way route. Italo’s high speed trains start at €30 and a ride on Trenitalia’s Frecciarossa (high speed) starts at around €36.

Keep in mind ticket prices depend on departure time, type of route, and type of class, so the prices will fluctuate depending on what you book.

Rome to Florence by bus

Itabus , Flixbus , and Marino Bus are the three main bus companies with services from Rome to Florence. They all have affordable and comparable services, so there’s a ton of flexibility when it comes to grabbing a seat.

While bus travel typically has a bad rep, Italian bus services offer comfortable rides with ample legroom and differing amenities depending on what you book: A/C, Wifi, snacks, reclinable seats, to name a few.

Most buses leave from Roma Tiburtina Station (some Roma Termini) and arrive at the Florence Villa Costanza Bus Station. The journey typically takes 3 hours, 15 minutes with multiple breaks along the way.

Ticket prices range from €5 – 21 ($5.46 – 22.91 USD) depending on the time and carrier you book with. 

No matter when you book, bus tickets are always affordable going to Florence, which is a huge plus. You can book them directly at the bus station or you can guarantee yourself a good seat and departure time by using Bookaway .

Rome to Florence by car

If you don’t want to rely on public transport and get to Florence on your own time, a rental car is a viable option. Especially if you want to make a road trip out of the journey and make stops along the route.

Self-driving routes from Rome to Florence

Rome and Florence are separated by over 270 km (167 miles) and connected by two routes: A1/E35 and the Raccordo Autostradale Firenze. 

Tip: Keep cash or card on you as both routes include tolls.

The most straightforward route is along the A1/E35 . It’s 271 km (168 miles) and takes just over 3 hours in normal traffic. It’s a scenic route as you pass through Orvieto, Arezzo, and many other small towns. 

The other option is the Raccordo Autostradale Firenze. It’s about 305 km (217 miles) and takes 3 hours and 26 minutes to get to Florence. It follows the same route most of the way as the A1, but instead of continuing north near Arezzo, it travels through the main Tuscan wine region.

Good to know: Getting to Florence with your own car rental is straightforward, however it’s important to note that driving in both Rome and Florence is a bit more complicated. And Florence doesn’t allow unauthorized cars in their city center. 

Getting a rental car in Rome

Taking a taxi from Rome to Florence

One of the most expensive ways to get from Rome to Florence is by taxi.

A one-way route will likely run you back roughly a few hundred euro and take about 3 hours in normal traffic. This can be a good option if you’re traveling in a group and can split the cost of a taxi, or if you have room in your budget for a straightforward mode of transport.

You cannot hail a taxi from the street in Rome. You’ll need to go to one of the taxi stands around the city or use an app like FreeNow or ChiamaTaxi to arrange a ride.

Alternative driving options

Lyft does not operate in Rome . Uber is an option, however it’s only Uber Black, Uber Lux, or Uber Van. All of which cost significantly more than using a regular taxi in Rome.

The most straightforward and seamless way to get from Rome to Florence is with a private transfer.

Out of all the transport options, this is the most expensive one, but it can be reasonably priced if you’re in a larger group. By using this service, you have the benefit of being picked up directly from your hotel or airport in Rome and taken straight to your hotel in Florence.

In normal traffic, it will take you nearly 3 hours to get there if there is normal traffic. So while it isn’t the most efficient option, if you have the time to give, it may work for your trip.

The fastest way to get from Rome to Florence is to take the high-speed train. It takes only 1.5 hours to get from the center of Rome to the center of Florence. Any other way of traveling between the cities will take you at least twice as long.High-speed trains run about every 20-30 minutes throughout the day from about 6am to 9pm.There are 2 types of trains between Rome and Florence: high-speed trains and regular trains. High-speed trains cover the distance of 300 km between the cities in 1.5 hours. They do not stop anywhere, stopping only in Rome and Florence. Regular trains, on the other hand, are slower and stop frequently. Because of this, the travel time stretches for 3-4 hours.I always choose only high-speed trains, Since I bought the tickets on the day of the trip, I paid 20€ for the regular train instead of 40€ for the high-speed train. And even though I saved money, the train took twice as long to get there, so I was a bit wrinkled all day. And I won’t talk about the comfort level. So you need to decide what is more important for you – time or money.

Head directly to the heart of the Renaissance after you land in Italy. Learn about taking the train from Rome Fiumicino Airport to Florence.

The largest and busiest airport in Italy, particularly in terms of international traffic, is Rome’s Fiumicino Airport (FCO). The airport is actually 22 miles (35 km) from Rome’s city center, but because it’s such a busy airport it has its own train station.

The FCO station connects frequently with central Rome with a few options, and from Rome, you can get anywhere else in Italy, including Florence. The Rome-to-Florence route is popular, and likely the first train ride you will take from the moment you land in Italy.

Frequent Trains from Rome Fiumicino Airport to Florence

Upon arrival at Fiumicino, you can choose either the Leonardo Express , a Regionale FL1 train, or a high-speed Alta Velocità (AV) train. The AV train is ideal if you’re not planning to spend any time in Rome and want to get straight on to Florence from the airport .

The AV trains are Frecciargento , the mid-range of the AV line, which leaves from FCO twice per day, at 11:08 a.m. and 3:08 p.m. They do stop along the way in Rome, but you don’t need to change trains. This trip takes 2 hours and 24 minutes, and ticket prices range from $28-34.

There are many more trains that will get you from FCO to Florence each day, but these require a train change in Rome. The Leonardo Express offers non-stop service all the way to Roma Termini  station. This trip takes 32 minutes, and the trains leave the airport every 15-30 minutes throughout the day. The FL1 trains connect the airport with other stations in Rome, including Tiburtina and Ostiense. These are commuter trains, therefore they make more stops en route, but the trip is still just over 30 minutes. The first trains bound for Rome from FCO leave the airport at 5:57 a.m., the last at 7:57 p.m. Ticket prices from FCO-Rome range from $17-21.

Once in Rome, you can take a direct Trenitalia AV train from Roma Termini to Firenze Santa Maria Novella  (abbreviated to SM Novella). This 143.5 mile (231 km) distance is covered in as little as 1.5 hours. Some of the AV trains also depart from Roma Tiburtina, which cuts ten minutes off the journey time. There are 68 trains on this route from Termini alone per day. The first train leaves Termini for Florence at 6:20 a.m., the last at 8:50 p.m., and ticket prices range from $20-50 on this route.

Italo trains leave from Roma Ostiense for SM Novella. This trip takes about 1 hour and 45 minutes, and there are seven departures per day.

Note that weekends and holidays typically mean less frequent service and sometimes longer travel times.  

Direct Trains from Rome Fiumicino Airport to Florence

As mentioned, there are only two direct trains from Rome’s Fiumicino Airport to Florence each day, and those are Frecciargento trains. These leave the airport at 11:08 a.m. and 3:08 p.m. All other trains will require a change en route at one of the train stations in Rome.  

Train amenities

The typical train for this route are all equipped with air-conditioning and power outlets in your seat for your convenience. There are both 1st-class and 2nd-class cars. First class passengers get a free drink and a choice of newspaper. A cafe car is available to all passengers.

Rome Fiumicino Airport, Rome, and Florence Train Stations

The airport’s train station is called Fiumicino Aeroporto which is located inside the Fiumicino Airport. The station is opposite of Terminal 1, and if you did not land at Terminal 1, there is a free shuttle connecting all the terminals.  There is another station named Fiumicino in a nearby town, so make sure not to get the stations confused!

Rome's Termini is the city's largest station, and also a major transportation hub within Rome. Many bus lines stop right outside the station, and there is a Metro station inside Termini.

Roma Tiburtina and Roma Ostiense are also connected to the city's Metro system, and are both served by a number of city buses.

Florence's Santa Maria Novella , is the city’s main train station. It is close to the historic center, and is a major hub for city and regional buses, making it easy to get to and from the station if you're traveling light.

1. High-speed train

Several train companies offer direct services between the two cities, and the journey takes about 1 hour and a half. 

I recommend you buy tickets online to save time and hassle in the morning, as seats can fill up during peak seasons. You can also grab your tickets at the train station if you forget.

Cost: €15 –  €30 each way for an express train

Duration: 1 hr 30mins one way

Departure: Roma Termini and Roma Tiburtina.

Arrival: Santa Maria Novella Station. 

Several train companies offer direct express services between the two cities, including Trenitalia and Italo. You can take a local train to save a few euros but it will extend your trip to 3-4 hours.

The most popular train stations for departures to Florence that are close to most Rome hotels are Roma Termini and Roma Tiburtina . And good news, in Florence, you will arrive at Santa Maria Novella Station which is in the heart of the city. Most places are easily accessible by walking.

• Even with the EuroRail or InterRail pass, you will need to make a reservation, which will cost you $10. You can easily book this on the ItaliaRail booking site

• Be flexible. Things don’t always go according to plan or according to your preferences so it’s important to be flexible when you’re on a guided tour
• Ask questions . If you have any questions, don’t be afraid to ask your tour guide.
• Don’t be late! This goes for pick up and whenever you are allocated some free time for exploring. If you are late back to the bus, you may just lose your ride!

3. Scenic Self-Drive 

Self-driving from Rome to Florence is a great way to see the Italian countryside and have the freedom to explore at your own pace. The drive takes about 3 hours and 15 minutes via the A1 highway, and the scenery is stunning. Expect to pay costs for the rental car, gasoline, and parking.

There are a few things to keep in mind if you’re planning on self-driving from Rome to Florence. 

First, you’ll need to make sure that you have a valid driver’s license and that your travel insurance covers your rental car.

Second, you’ll need to be familiar with the Italian road rules. 

And third, you’ll need to be prepared for traffic, especially during the peak season.

When it comes to parking in Florence, it is pretty limited. There are a few street parking spots available in the city center, but they are metered and have time limits. Some park-and-ride lots are located outside the city center and are great for avoiding the hassle of paying and having to move your car.

• Make sure you fill up! Fill your car with petrol in Rome as it is more expensive in Florence.

How to get from Rome to Florence: The Worst Ways 

Moving onto, in my opinion, the worst ways to get from Rome to Florence for a day trip.

Flying from Rome to Florence for a day trip is possible, but it is NOT recommended. 

The flight time is only about 1 hour from Rome’s Leonardo da Vinci International Airport to Florence’s Amerigo Vespucci Airport, but you will need to factor in the time it takes to get to and from the airports, as well as the security checks. This means that you will only have about 4-5 hours in Florence, which is not enough time to see the city properly.

I will always opt for a train over a plane, and here’s why:

• You can get up and walk around on a train
• A train is much more scenic
• Avoid long lines and security at the airport
• It is often cheaper and faster (flights are typically $120 more or less)

If you are determined to fly from Rome to Florence for a day trip, I recommend you book your flights early. This will help you to get the best prices and the most convenient flight times.

But again I wouldn’t recommend flying for a day trip. 

5. Catch a Taxi

Catching a taxi from Rome to Florence is possible, but it is not the most recommended way to travel between the two cities. 

The taxi fare will be quite pricey (about $400-500 each way), and the journey will take about 2 hours. 

Catching a taxi can be convenient, but it is not the most flexible option. You will be limited to the taxi driver’s schedule.

Essential Taxi Tips

• Book your taxi in advance . This will help you to guarantee a taxi and get a better price.
• Be prepared to pay a high fare . The taxi fare will be very expensive, so be prepared to pay a lot of money.
• Be aware of the traffic . The traffic can be heavy, so be prepared for the journey to take longer than 2 hours.
• Have a backup plan . If you are unable to catch a taxi, you can consider taking the train or the bus.

6. Taking the Bus

Personally, I would recommend you stick with the train, it is worth the extra few euros for a quicker, more comfortable journey that leaves you ample time to explore Florence.

Early Morning Start

Rise and shine it’s time to head to Florence! 

Catch an early morning train from Rome to Florence, aiming to arrive in Florence by mid-morning. Trains depart from Rome’s Termini station usually starting at 5 am or 6 am and arrive at Florence’s Santa Maria Novella station.

Or wait for your tour guide to swing by and pick you up if you choose that route!

1. Visit the Florence Cathedral (Duomo)

Start your day in Florence by heading to the signature Florence Cathedral, also known as the Duomo. Marvel at its stunning architecture and consider climbing to the top of the dome for panoramic views of the city.

2. Explore Piazza della Signoria

Rome to Venice via tuscany

Now I do understand the ZLT zones are to be avoided, so I have a couple of questions:-

1) What would be the best most practical place to hire the car in Rome, we would be staying near city center?

2) What would be the most practical place to drop off the car in/around Venice? (We have an international flight from Venice so coming back to Rome or going else where is not much of an option)

3) Recommendation on the scenic route and where can we spend two nights in the Tuscany region

Why driving in tunnels at 80 kmph when there is an high speed train that runs under the same mountains at 200 kmph?

Once you have enjoyed the Tuscan countryside driving along the famous SS222 "Chiantigiana" road, what's the benefit of wastin' your vacation time in a car ?

The first would be the Val d'Orcia , which includes the main towns of Montepulciano , Montalcino , and Pienza . Anyone of these towns would be a good choice to visit this area for the beautiful towns, landscape, and wines.

The other would be the Chianti Classico, which extends from Siena to Florence . As suggested above the famous Wine Road, SR222 offers a look at a number of lovely hilltowns and wineries. Some towns to consider for staying would be: Greve, Panzano, Castellina, Radda, Siena.

If you decide to drive to Venice after this visit, then arrange to drop off your rental car at Piazzale Roma in Venice. From there, you can walk or water taxi to many accommodations in Venice.

'Expensive in every way': What travelers should expect this summer

Summer travel in 2024 will be "expensive in every way," said Katharine Nohr. And she should know.

She's planning a two-week adventure to Europe in June, which starts with a marathon flight from Honolulu to Zurich, where she'll speak at a conference. Then, she's hopscotching across Europe – to Vienna, then on to the Olympics. Nohr made plans to be in Nantes, France, to watch a soccer game, in Lille for basketball, and in Paris for gymnastics, boxing, and swimming.

All told, it'll set her back five figures despite her best efforts, which include flying economy class and staying in the lowest-priced hotels. 

"The trip is pricey, even with my efforts to economize," said Nohr, an attorney from Honolulu. "But it's a once-in-my-life adventure."

Summer travelers are pursuing exciting, expensive vacations

Nohr is part of a wave of travelers who are making big plans for this summer. The itineraries are exciting – and expensive. 

Pretty much every barometer of travel intent is up for the summer travel season. Inflation and unemployment are low, and consumer sentiment and curiosity are high, fueling an unprecedented interest in travel during the summer of 2024. 

"Bookings are rising," said Susan Sherren, who runs Couture Trips , a travel agency. "Unfortunately, hotel, tour, and air prices are not falling. So, if you plan on hitting the road this summer, make sure you are willing to splash some cash."

Travel companies say they're overwhelmed with summer reservations.

"The travel economy is booming," said Joe Ialacci, owner of Yacht Hampton Boating Club , a company that rents yachts in Sag Harbor, New York. He's seeing a 40% increase in rentals this summer compared to last year as Americans shift some of their vacation dollars to domestic destinations.

Prices aren't the only thing trending higher. People's expectations for their summer vacation are also higher than at any time since the pandemic, said Sangeeta Sadarangani, CEO of Crossing , a multinational travel agency headquartered in London. 

"They're embracing the unknown," she said.

And one of the great unknowns is travel prices. How much higher will they be?

What will prices be like this summer?

It depends on where you're going. There's good news if you're traveling within the U.S.: flights and hotels are a little less expensive than last summer . But they're rising elsewhere. Here's the breakdown:

• Airfares are mixed. Domestic roundtrip airfares for summer will peak at $315 per ticket, according to the travel platform Hopper . Flights to Europe are cheaper, too. They've fallen 10% from last year to $882. But flights to South America are up 2% and flights to Canada have risen 7%. You'll pay an average of $708 to fly south of the border and $419 to head north.
• U.S. hotel rates are down. Domestically, they're about the same as last year at an average of $206 per night.
• Car rental prices are rising. Average domestic car rental rates are only up 3% this summer to $42 per day on a four-day rental, according to Hopper. 

But you can avoid the high prices with a little strategic planning, experts say.

What to avoid this summer

American travelers are becoming more predictable in their summer vacation choices, said John Lovell, president of Travel Leaders Group . Immediately after the pandemic, they embarked on "revenge" vacations to far-flung locations. Now they're returning to more conventional vacations.

"We continue to see U.S. travelers heading back to the more traditional locations across Europe this year, like London, Rome, Athens and Munich," he said.

There are places that will be exceptionally busy – and exceptionally pricey – this summer.

• Paris during the Olympics. The Olympic Games are taking place in Paris this summer. Rooms are more than double the normal rates . which is typical of the Olympics. Paris is already crowded with tourists during the summer, so you can probably imagine what it will be like with the Olympics. Zut, alors!
• Taylor Swift is touring Europe this summer. Prices will be higher and the crowds will be denser. "If you aren't planning to attend one of her concerts, I recommend planning around those European cities when she's there," said Betsy Ball, co-founder of Euro Travel Coach . • Other big summer events. Even if you steer clear of Taylor and the Olympics, you're still not out of the woods. There's the UEFA Euro 2024 football tournament in Germany in June. There's the Tour de France in July, which begins in Florence and finishes in Nice. France is also hosting the Paralympic Games in August and September, which will take place in Paris, Nice, Marseille and Bordeaux.

When is the best time to book a 2024 summer vacation?

Since this is going to be a busy one, the sooner you book, the better. Hopper recommends buying your airfare two to three months before your departure for domestic flights, and for international – well, it's probably too late to get that rock-bottom fare. If you're reading this in April, you can still find something for late August or early September, according to its airfare experts.

As always, you can save money by booking a flight for midweek instead of on the weekend – and, of course, by keeping far, far away from the big travel holidays like Memorial Day, the Fourth of July and Labor Day. 

Also, if you're going overseas, remember their holiday calendar is different. For example, half of Europe shuts down during August for summer vacation. It's worth a look-up, otherwise, you could face some real disappointments.

Strategies for traveling better during the summer

One tactic that consistently works is splitting your getaway into two sections. Take that required summer vacation with your family somewhere less expensive during the high season. Then, wait until shoulder season for the big trip. 

That's what Ross Copas, a retired electrician from Tweed, Canada, is doing during the summer of 2024. It's a road trip across the northern U.S. by motorcycle – New York to Washington State, and then back east through Canada. 

Then he's heading to Amsterdam in September for a 23-day European river cruise. He said the late summer getaway will be costly, but he doubts fares will fall anytime soon. "So price be damned," he added.

Actually, that's pretty smart. I took the same cruise he's planning on Viking River Cruises many years ago, and it was worth every penny.

With hotel rates rising in some places this summer, this is the right time to consider alternatives. Monica Fish, a writer from Glen Rock, N.J., is headed to Ireland to catch one of Taylor Swift's performances. She said hotel rooms in Dublin are overpriced if they're even available. But Fish found an affordable vacation rental. 

"We just had to book it farther in advance than we normally would," she said. 

Go ahead, follow the crowds this summer

I think it's fine to follow the crowds this summer. I'll be doing it. I'm planning to rent an apartment for a month in Switzerland with Blueground, a long-term apartment rental company. Then I'm crashing on a friend's sofa in Spain, then heading to Sweden to see other friends and visiting my brother in Finland. Yes, travel writers know people everywhere . 

But don't follow the crowds off a cliff. There are places even I won't go. I might take the four-hour train trip from Zurich to Paris in June to check out my favorite patisseries, but I wouldn't go anywhere near the City of Lights during the summer games in July unless I made a reservation a long time ago.

And Taylor Swift? Puh-leeze. I'm more of a jazz guy.
