I've got some great news for those looking for a mini electric kettle for travellers - I've done plenty of research and testing so you don't have to! Read this post to find out what kettles I bought and tested and what I think the best travel kettle is - plus the important things to consider when buying a travel kettle.

If you don't care for a long and uber-detailed post about the pros and cons of travel kettles and just want to me to get to the point, here it is! If you want to get into the nitty gritty details of why it's so good, then keep reading!

I love drinking tea and strongly believe that having a small electric kettle and cups in a hotel room is a basic necessity. Unfortunately, many hotels don't share my view and quite often even those that claim to have tea and coffee making facilities put in a Nespresso-like machine, so if you're lucky enough to get any tea pods at all, I wouldn't actually call the final result tea - it goes more in the direction of something odd with an aftertaste of coffee - yuck! So when I found out that I was going to be spending three weeks in a hotel with no kettle, the dreaded prospect of having to leave the room in the morning without consuming that all-important cuppa first thing took finding the best travel kettle straight to the top of my priority list.

At first I though this would be super easy and went to Boots - all I found there was one rather large and ugly-looking kettle, which I did not want. Online shopping it was then...

So, my fellow tea aficionados, let's start with the key things you need to consider when looking for a kettle for your travels. Reading the below will make it easier to make sense of the stats in the comparison table and understand my choices. If you don't care about any of that and just want me to tell you what travel kettle to buy, scroll down to the next section.

Size/Capacity:

One of the key things that turns a normal electric kettle into a travel kettle is portability - so I suggest you focus your attention on kettles with capacity of 500ml or a bit less, especially if you travel as a couple or alone. 500ml capacity is enough for two people to get a normal-sized cup of tea each, so anything bigger is just wasting precious suitcase space that could be used for something else. If you are absolutely determined to go for a bigger capacity, you might want to consider a collapsible kettle .

Though kettle wattage (a number followed by a 'w', e.g. 600w, 1000w etc.) may seem like a meaningless number at first, there is actually a direct link between this number and the speed with which you can get your cup of tea! Wattage reflects the power of the kettle, so the bigger this number is, the faster the kettle will boil. I tested travel kettles of different wattage and can confirm it does make a difference to boiling time - check my handy key stats table further down in the post for wattage and boil times.

Dual voltage:

If you want your kettle to function worldwide, it will need to have a feature called 'dual voltage', allowing it to work both in countries with 200-240 volts (e.g. European countries) and 100-127 volts (e.g. North American countries). I've thought long and hard about whether to put this in or not. Don't want to be seen as scaremongering, but I personally find this kind of information very important, so here we go. You may or may not have heard of BPA or Bisphenol-A, a chemical contained in plastic. It has generated a lot of controversy around potential negative effects to health and is a candidate for the 'substance of very high concern' list in the European Union due to its endocrine-disrupting properties and being toxic for reproduction. On the other hand, USA Food & Drug administration claims BPA in food plastics is safe at current levels. It's up to you to make the decision on whether you are ok with a plastic kettle or want to choose a material that doesn't contain BPA, like stainless steel.

Though they are called 'travel kettles', just like any other electrical device, they come with a non-interchangeable country-standard plug (e.g. the 3-pin plug in the UK), so if you are buying your kettle in the UK and planning to use it to travel to continental Europe or the US, you will also need to have a travel adaptor to be able to use your kettle. This is a very important piece of advice that I managed to forget myself - arrived at the hotel and wanted to make a cup of tea to discover that I have forgotten the adaptor - oops! The hotel didn't have any I could borrow, but luckily Amazon delivered to Portugal (I did have to wait several days even with the Prime option, so double important to buy your travel adaptor in advance, especially if your trip is a short one). Now that you are aware of what to look out for, let's move on to the main bit of this post - my search for the best travel kettle.

Having looked at quite a lot of different travel kettles on Amazon, I discarded the following;

'noname' brands - they may be cheap, but I wanted something I could trust

kettles with conflicting information (e.g. different data on key stats between description and Q&A sections)

kettles with poor ratings or potentially worrying things mentioned in the reviews

This narrowed my options down to two: a Lakeland travel kettle (stainless steel) and a Kenwood travel kettle (plastic) - both brands I have heard of before and with good reviews.

I bought them both and spent a couple of weeks measuring, testing and comparing to pick the best travel kettle. Though a few weeks isn't a true test of durability, so far both kettles are still operational (which, by the way, is already better than the suspiciously cheap 'noname' sunrise alarm clock I tried, which lasted exactly a week...)

Both kettles come with accessories that can be stacked inside the kettle for transportation, have a covered element and dual voltage. Both also switch off automatically when boiled - an important feature in a travel kettle!

So both will do the job of making you tea, but I do have a winner of my newly established best travel kettle title to share with you. Though Kenwood has scored a few points in its favour, Lakeland is the one I will be taking on my trip.

Update: It's now been a good few months since I wrote this post and I am happy to say that my Lakeland travel kettle has been a reliable hot water provider on several trips already. Everything is still functional, I've made good use of all the accessories and the carry bag is very handy. Still my recommended choice!

Lakeland travel kettle - my recommended best travel kettle

Lakeland is a British kitchenware brand, which was one of the reasons for choosing this kettle - I would rather support a local business than a no-name Chinese manufacturer. The body of the kettle is made from stainless steel, which was my preferred material, not just because of BPA, but also since it feels more durable, so if your suitcase gets knocked around by the baggage handlers at the airport, a stainless steel travel kettle is less likely to get damaged (whereas plastic could crack).

I was a bit concerned that stainless steel would be heavier than plastic (hence getting a plastic kettle too for comparison), but the kettle itself weighs only 20g more than its plastic equivalent from Kenwood, so the difference is negligible. Yes, when all the accessories are stacked inside, it becomes 80g heavier than the Kenwood one, but that's because it's got an extra container for coffee/tea and sugar, which is actually a useful little accessory, so a positive rather than a drawback. Plus with 1000w, its fast boiling time sealed the deal for me, so we have a winner! It might be a bit on the pricier side, but it's worth the money spent.

For people conscious of BPA, the only plastic part that comes in contact with the steam/water is the lid - apart from that, it's all steel on the inside.

Has more accessories than most on the market - carry bag and sugar/tea container included as well as 2 cups and spoons. Carry bag fits well and will definitely be used - don't want to open my suitcase on arrival and find the kettle full of fluff from clothes!

Quick to boil - when filled to capacity at 500ml, it takes 3.5 minutes to boil

I did find a few cons with the Lakeland travel kettle, but they are very minor:

No water window, so have to look inside the kettle to see how full it is.

The 500ml marker inside is set a bit too high - the actual 500ml is a few millimetres below, so make sure you don't fill it right to the marker to avoid the kettle spitting some water out when boiling.

Though the kettle is made of steel, the cups are plastic and there is nothing to say they are BPA-free, so I am considering whether to get a separate BPA-free cup .

Kenwood travel kettle

My experience with Kenwood so far is that it's a reliable brand - have had their food processor in our kitchen for years and so far no issues (*touch wood!*). This trust factor is one of the main reasons I've chose the Kenwood travel kettle over numerous other small plastic kettles available.

It's a nice-looking little kettle, a tiny bit taller than the Lakeland, but not by a lot. A handy feature of the Kenwood travel kettle is a removable spout filter mesh to stop limescale pouring into your cup, which the Lakeland kettle doesn't have. Plus it's easy to see how full the kettle is through the water windows.

However, I was disappointed that the manufacturer managed to err by as much as 50ml when putting the marker in for the max level, and it did take a while to bring the water to the boil. Neither of those issues stop the kettle from functioning, so if they don't bother you, it's a viable alternative to the Lakeland one.

Oh, I love this idea. I already take individual packets of matcha tea and collagen, but often have a hard time making clean hot water (using a used coffee maker is not the vibe).

I purchased the Loutytuo kettle as recommended by another TFG reader. I loved it so much and used it more often than I expected. I even purchased one for my granddaughter who is at university to take with her on long days at the lab and library. She make Ramen as well as hot tea! Go figure! ♥️

And with the dual voltage, you can take it anywhere overseas where the voltage is often different (220V in Europe, 110V in the USA for example. If you take the wrong one in either direction you either end up with a kettle that doesn’t boil, or it blows up! Neither is a great option.

Because this kettle uses a stainless steel container to boil the water, I am also a huge fan. Having owned dozens of kettles over the years, I now only accept and use stainless steel.

You could email the hotel and ask them if they will provide what you want if you request it.

You can buy inexpensive kettles/coffee makers in the many big drugstores - CVS, Duane Reade for example. You can buy ground coffee in nearly every little deli you come across (and there are a ton of them) or in a grocery store. You can do a google search for either of those and then see if one is near your hotel, which I am sure there is -

Are you wanting coffee or tea? It is not common for US hotels to have kettles as we are not as much a tea drinking country as is the UK. Many hotels do have the coffee makes though.

I don't know if you can find a "travel" kettle in too many places here but I do know you can find cheap(ish) coffee makers as that seems to be what you said you wanted in your original post. That you will not have a hard time finding.

Even if your room has a coffee maker, if you want tea you might consider buying a cheap one. You can certainly just heat water in a coffee maker, but after it's been used many, many times to make coffee, you're likely to get hot water with a weak coffee flavor. You might not want this! A new one obviously won't have this issue.

There were common back when I was in college cuz mircowaves were still very expensive and not a dorm room standard like they are now.

If CVS has them, odds are so does Duane Reade--and between the two drug store chains you can't walk more than 2 blocks in any direction without falling over one or both. ( I'd get the kettle, then you can make instant soup and other stuff!)

By the way, as odd as this sounds, when you do go to a restaurant or diner, do not be surprised if you have to tell them how to make a cup of tea (and no, I am not kidding.) If you just ask for a cup of tea, it is highly likely that you will be served a rapidly cooling cup of water with an unopened tea bag on the side. If you ask for tea with milk at a take out counter, do not be surprised if the knucklehead behind the counter puts the milk in first, and then the tea bag, and then pours water over it.

A local’s travel guide to New York City: what to eat, see and do in three days

Top destinations in New York include a ferry ride, shopping for watches in Chinatown and a Brighton Beach bender

I first came to New York City by accident, after a miscommunication with my father led me to believe my (long-deceased) mother had been desperate to visit the city before she died.

Years later I found out that my mum had actually wanted to go to Paris. But I still had a great time in New York, and ended up moving here a couple of years later.

On that first trip I did all the main tourist things which, owing to the miscommunication, I had thought my mother had wanted to do: I went up big buildings, looked at big buildings, drank in bars beneath big buildings.

It was great and everything, but there’s much, much more to do here – especially if you like eating, riding about by subway and ferry, and bargaining for knockoff luxury goods.

Day 1: Boating and brownstones

A lot of people have heard of the Staten Island ferry , and for good reason. It’s free to travel on the big orange boats between the southern tip of Manhattan and Staten Island. The route goes right past the Statue of Liberty, and offers amazing views of lower Manhattan.

As a boat lover, I’d also recommend taking the NYC ferry . It has a flat fare of $4 and operates up and down the East River, passing under bridges and allowing riders to snoop at waterside buildings.

If you’re starting in Manhattan (which you probably are), take the southbound ferry from East 34th Street to the Brooklyn neighborhood of Dumbo, which stands for “down under the Manhattan Bridge overpass”. It’s here where everyone with an Instagram account gets their shots of both the Manhattan Bridge and the (older, better-known) Brooklyn Bridge. Plenty of people will visit this area then turn their back on Brooklyn, but I’d recommend sticking around New York City’s most populous and, depending whom you speak to, trendiest borough.

Pop by Jane’s Carousel , an exquisitely restored 1922 ride which is plonked between the bridges, and then walk south through Brooklyn Bridge Park. You’ll go past several piers – once working docks now transformed into leafy picnic and sport areas. There are magnificent views across to Manhattan. It’s a nice spot to propose to a partner, as my little brother did last year. If you don’t want to do that, but do like to play soccer or basketball or roller-skate, you’re in luck.

After you hit Pier 6, where there’s a pleasant, if expensive, rooftop pizza restaurant called Fornino , walk up Atlantic Avenue for some shopping and coffee at Goose Barnacle , an independent clothing store with a hidden bar in the back. The owner, Dave Alperin, a fourth-generation Brooklynite, is very friendly and knowledgable about the area and can give you tips about everything from where to buy the best sandwich ( Lillo Cucina Italiana – try the Mamma Roma) to the location of a semi-secret basement speakeasy ( Le Boudoir ) nearby.

From there I’d take a bus or cab to Fort Greene, a very pretty neighborhood whose townhouses are the sort of Brooklyn thing you see in the movies, and grab dinner at Olea . If you make it before 6.30pm, there’s a great happy hour.

Day 2: Rude T-shirts and not-quite Rolexes

Manhattan’s Soho neighborhood has all the posh shops, so if you have money, or like looking through windows at expensive clothes and bags, walk east along Prince Street from West Broadway. There are nice buildings to look at around here too – the newly constructed towers that abound in the city are largely absent in this neighborhood. Stop in at Fanelli Cafe , a neighborhood stalwart that has been around since 1847, for a coffee or some food, then head south along Broadway to Chinatown.

There are lots of great dim sum places, including Golden Unicorn , whose large fancy dining hall is located on the second floor of a marble-esque building. From there I’d take a walk along Canal Street, dipping into sidestreets for cheap souvenirs – snow globes, little statues and that sort of thing – and bizarre T-shirts (many of which are very rude).

Chinatown also does a roaring trade in imitation watches and handbags. So if, like me, you will not and cannot spend $30,000 on a watch but have about $100 to spare, you can get (to my eye) a fairly good imitation. The food markets along Canal Street also sell real nice timepieces – they even work – if you fancy sticking it to big watch. You’ll find plenty of “designer” bags too.

Hopefully you’re hungry again, because Great N Y Noodletown is, per its name, great – especially the roast pig on rice.

From there I’d head farther south and stop in at Whiskey Tavern , the friendliest bar I’ve ever been to in my life (and I’ve been to a lot of bars). They print out personalized welcome signs that they will stick to your table or behind the bar, which sounds a bit naff – but isn’t. The real reason to come is to chat to locals and regulars. It’s also one of the closest bars to city hall, which means there’s a regular stream of “Just Married” couples doing shots of whiskey and eating chicken wings.

If you’ve still got energy, and like singing or shouting, go to Up Stairs , a karaoke bar tucked behind a nondescript doorway on Canal Street. Drinks are cheap, and it gets packed with revelers.

Day 3: Seaside shenanigans

If, like me, you’re a fan of once-glamorous seaside attractions that are now in a state of faded glory, then take the F train to Coney Island. People seem to overlook the fact that the city is surrounded by water, and while Coney Island isn’t the nicest beach for bathing (for that, try Fort Tilden or Jacob Riis Park), there’s loads to do.

Kick things off by watching a Brooklyn Cyclones game. The Cyclones are a feeder team to the New York Mets. They play at Maimonides Park, tickets are usually dirt cheap and easy to get, and you’ll be able to enjoy a nice view of the Atlantic Ocean. If you want a snazzy memento, buy a beer in a foot-long plastic baseball bat. Sometimes they let the crowd “run the bases” after the game, which is a lot of fun, especially if you’ve had more than one of the baseball bat beers.

After the exhilaration of taking in second-tier baseball, walk east towards the Cyclone , one of the oldest and, as far as I can tell, rickety-est rollercoasters in the US. The wooden ride – described as “pretty extreme” by Coaster Critic – will celebrate its 100th birthday in 2027, and it sounds and looks its age. Buyer beware.

Once you’ve stumbled off the ride, go for a settling drink at Ruby’s , the oldest bar on the boardwalk. You can take in the black-and-white shots of Coney Island in its 1930s glory, and if you’re feeling brave, buy a cardboard box full of clams.

Every Friday night from late June to September there is a fireworks show on the beach, which draws a large crowd. You could take it in while eating borscht and sipping coffee or vodka at Tatiana’s , a Russian restaurant-cum-nightclub a 10-minute walk along the boardwalk from the Cyclone.

Side note: you don’t need to wait until summer to visit. I went a day after it had snowed, and it was brilliant.

You can watch the solar eclipse from One World Observatory in NYC: How to get tickets

A total solar eclipse will pass through parts of the United States on Monday, April 8, meaning the shadow of the moon will plunge a narrow strip of land into darkness in the middle of the day.

Some tourist destinations, such as Niagara Falls , are going big for the eclipse. The state park is offering "free and open-to-the-public programming" leading up to April 8, the park said in a news release.

Another tourist destination offering a unique place to watch the eclipse is One World Observatory . Located on top of One World Trade Center in New York City, the observatory is offering the public a chance to witness the eclipse from the "highest observation deck in all the Western Hemisphere," according to a news release.

Tickets are $94 for adults, $92 for seniors and $88 for children ages 6 to 12. Children five years old and younger can enter for free. Tickets are on sale now on One World Observatory's website .

A ticket gets you entry to the observatory, one pair of solar eclipse viewing glasses, a voucher for one complimentary beverage of your choice, a commemorative One World Observatory pint glass, a commemorative souvenir photo and 10% off at the retail shop, according to the news release.

What is the path of totality for the total solar eclipse?

Before entering the U.S., the eclipse's path of totality will travel over a portion of northern Mexico. It will pass into Texas around 1:30 p.m. local time. It will then cover portions of the Midwest and East Coast and touch southeast Canada before it moves out to sea, according to  NASA .

Several major cities will be in its  direct line of darkness , including Dallas; Little Rock, Arkansas; Indianapolis; Cleveland; Buffalo, New York; and Burlington Vermont. This animated map shows the path and local time the total eclipse will pass across the nation.

How do I watch the 2024 solar eclipse?

There's a few ways of watching the eclipse:

• Get the full experience in person : If you're in a narrow band of U.S. land that spans from Texas to Maine, you will see the moon block the sun and its shadow cast a night-like darkness over Earth for a few minutes. You'll be able to look up without eye protection and see the outline of the moon.
• Watch from outside the path of totality : Much of the U.S. will get a partial view of the eclipse that isn't nearly as impressive as being in the path of totality. Earth won't be plunged into darkness and you'll have to wear protective eyewear to see the moon partially block the sun.
• Watch a livestream : Check back on April 8 for a video feed from the path of totality. It's not the same as being there in person, but hey,  at least you won't have to sit in traffic .

Best less expensive CC cream

E.l.f.’s Camo CC Cream is less than a third of the IT Cosmetics’ price and was also praised by four makeup artists I spoke to. Like the above, it offers full coverage with a natural finish. The main difference is that it’s made with a lower SPF content (so you may want to wear sunscreen with this formula), and its benefits are focused on extra skin hydration. Its active ingredients are vitamin B5, tremella mushroom, and hyaluronic acid. For the price, though, this is still an excellent natural-looking, moisturizing formula. It comes in an even wider range of 60 shades.

Best for oily skin and acne-prone skin

Dermablend’s oil-free CC cream is a favorite of beauty writer and consultant Kristina Rodulfo , who has acne-prone skin and has never broken out from wearing this formula. It’s full coverage, so you only need a little bit to cover dark spots , redness, or unevenness, but it never feels cakey. It contains antioxidants like baicalin, niacinamide, vitamin E, and caffeine to defend against free radical damage and aging. Similar to the It Cosmetics formula, this has SPF 50, but it only comes in 13 shades.

Best CC cream for mature skin

For mature skin , celebrity makeup artist Jamie Greenberg recommends Thrive Causemetics’ CC cream. He likes its patented Blur Effect technology for smoothing out fine lines and wrinkles. It’s also formulated with SPF 40 for UV protection and vitamin C for evening out skin tone over time, and it comes in 28 shade options.

Best radiant finish CC cream

Celebrity makeup artist T. Cooper likes Toty’s CC cream because it’s made with the patented PLE FernBoost Technology, green tea, and vitamin E, which all help to prevent photoaging. The buildable medium-coverage formula has a radiant finish versus the more natural finishes you’ll find with most of the CC creams listed. It’s formulated with SPF 50 and available in 15 shades.

Instead, the formula offers moisturizing and full coverage. Air Licium and lentil-seed extract work to blur, reduce shine, and minimize pores, while hyaluronic acid hydrates and prevents dry patches. It’s made with SPF 40 (slightly less than the best overall pick from IT Cosmetics) and comes in a wide range of 30 shades.

Mark Grant has been calling  San Diego Padres  games since 1996. Before that, he was a pitcher in the major leagues for eight seasons. So he’s no stranger to baseball road trips. And yet, Grant remains in awe of the fact that you can just hop on an airplane and go play a baseball game in some faraway place. 

In the eighth inning of the Padres’ game against the  Los Angeles Dodgers  in Seoul, South Korea, on Thursday, Grant went off on a tangent, telling broadcast partner Don Orsillo just how fascinated he is with the fact that they’ll be back home in San Diego in no time. 

“Isn’t it amazing, Donny? [Sideline reporter] Mariluz [Cook] was just in San Diego. We saw Petco Park,” Grant said after the broadcast aired Cook’s report from back home. “We are on the other side of the planet. And after this game, we’re gonna get in a big metal tube and fly for 11 hours and be in San Diego. Isn’t that incredible when you get down to think about it?”

Orsillo’s response was gold: “Yeah, it’s far away!”

The Padres won the game to split the two-game overseas series. They’ll return home and resume regular season games on March 28. Their first road trip of the season is to San Francisco. Grant should have an easier time wrapping his head around that one.

Following Measles Outbreaks, Officials Grow Wary of Renewed Threat

Cases this year have already topped the total in 2023. Unvaccinated travelers account for most infections.

Measles, a highly contagious but preventable disease, is resurging in pockets of the United States, a warning of the dangers of the strengthening anti-vaccine movement.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has recorded more cases this year than the 58 tallied in all of 2023, although the agency is not expected to release exact numbers until Friday. On Monday, the agency advised health care providers to ensure that unvaccinated patients, especially those traveling internationally, stay updated on their immunizations.

The number of cases is likely to keep rising because of a sharp spike in measles worldwide, along with spring travel to some regions with outbreaks, including Britain, said Dr. Manisha Patel, chief medical officer at the C.D.C.’s respiratory disease division.

Nearly all the cases in the United States so far are related to unvaccinated travelers. “We’re not going to see widespread measles cases going throughout the country,” Dr. Patel said. “But we do expect additional cases and outbreaks to happen.”

Measles is among the most contagious of diseases; each infected person can spread the virus to as many as 18 others. The virus is airborne and can stay aloft up to two hours after an infected person has left the room, spreading rapidly through homes, schools and child care facilities.

In Chicago, one case of measles at a migrant shelter has grown to 13 , prompting the C.D.C. to send a team to help contain the outbreak. (Two additional cases in the city appear to be unrelated.)

In Florida, seven students at an elementary school contracted measles even as the state’s surgeon general, Dr. Joseph Ladapo, left it to parents to decide whether unvaccinated children should attend school.

In southwest Washington, officials identified measles in six unvaccinated adult members of a family living in two counties. And in Arizona, an international traveler infected with measles dined at a restaurant and transmitted the virus to at least two others .

Measles was eliminated in the United States in 2000, and American children generally must be immunized to attend school. Yet sporadic cases lead to larger outbreaks every few years. But now a drop in vaccination rates, exacerbated by the coronavirus pandemic, has experts worried about a resurgence.

When vaccinations lag, “the first disease to appear is measles, because it’s highly infectious,” said Dr. Saad Omer, dean of the O’Donnell School of Public Health at U.T. Southwestern in Dallas.

Nine of 10 unvaccinated people in close contact with a measles patient will become infected, according to the C.D.C.

Measles is far less deadly in countries with high immunization rates and good medical care. Fewer than three of every 1,000 American children with measles will die as a result of severe complications like pneumonia or encephalitis, the swelling of the brain.

Still, about one in five people with measles may end up in a hospital.

Because widespread measles outbreaks have been rare, most Americans, including doctors, may not recognize the vibrant red rash that accompanies respiratory symptoms in a measles infection. They may have forgotten the impact of the disease on individuals and communities.

“Most of our local health department folks have never seen a measles outbreak,” said Dr. Christine Hahn, state epidemiologist of Idaho, which contained a small cluster of cases last year.

“It’s going to be a big challenge to us to respond if and when we get our next outbreak,” she said.

Before the first measles vaccine was introduced in the 1960s, the disease killed an estimated 2.6 million people worldwide each year. But its full impact may have been much greater.

Measles cripples the immune system, allowing other pathogens easier entry into the body. A 2015 study estimated that measles may have accounted for as many as half of all infectious disease deaths in children.

For about a month after the acute illness, measles can stun the body’s first response to other bacteria and viruses, said Dr. Michael Mina, chief science officer of the digital health company eMed and formerly an epidemiologist at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health.

That leaves patients “massively susceptible to bacterial pneumonias and other things,” said Dr. Mina, who was the lead author on the 2015 study.

“It’s very risky for people in those first few weeks post measles,” he added.

The virus also induces a sort of immune-system amnesia. Normally the body “remembers” the bacteria and viruses it has fought before. Dr. Mina and his colleagues showed in 2019 that people who have measles lose between 11 and 73 percent of their hard-won immune repertoire, a loss that can last for years.

That does not mean the body no longer recognizes those pathogens at all, but it does shrink the arsenal of weapons available to fight them.

“People should be aware that if they’re choosing not to vaccinate, that’s the position they’re putting themselves and their family in,” Dr. Mina said.

The C.D.C. recommends receiving the first dose of the measles vaccine after 12 months of age, and a second between ages 4 and 6. Even a single dose of the vaccine is 93 percent effective. Measles vaccination averted 56 million deaths between 2000 and 2021, according to the World Health Organization.

Vaccination rates in the United States have shown a distinct, if small, dip to 93 percent in the 2022-23 school year from 95 percent in 2019-20 — the level required to protect everyone in the community. Rates of vaccination exemptions increased in 40 states and the District of Columbia.

In a survey last year , just over half of Republicans said that public schools should require measles vaccinations, compared with about 80 percent before the pandemic. (Support for vaccines among Democrats held steady.)

While national or state-level vaccination rates may be high, there may be pockets of low immunization that provide tinder for the measles virus, Dr. Omer said.

If there are enough unvaccinated cases to sustain an outbreak, even those who are vaccinated but whose immunity may have waned are vulnerable, he said.

In Idaho, 12 percent of kindergarten-age children do not have a record of vaccination. Some of the gap results from parents unable or unwilling to share records with the schools, and not because their children are not immunized, Dr. Hahn said.

Still, online schools, which proliferated through the pandemic and remain popular in the state, have some of the highest rates of vaccine exemptions, she said.

In September, a young Idaho man brought measles back after international travel and became ill enough to be hospitalized . Along the way, he exposed fellow passengers on two flights, dozens of health care workers and patients, and nine unvaccinated family members. All nine developed measles.

Idaho got “very lucky” with the outbreak because the family lived in a remote area, Dr. Hahn said. But there are most likely many other areas in the state where an outbreak would be difficult to contain.

“We’ve got plenty of tinder, if you will,” she added.

Some large outbreaks in recent years exploded among huge clusters of unvaccinated people, including the Amish in Ohio and the Orthodox Jewish community in New York City.

In September 2018, one unvaccinated child returned to New York City from Israel, ferrying measles virus picked up during an outbreak in that country.

Even though the city maintains high vaccination rates, that single case set off an outbreak that raged for nearly 10 months, the largest in the country in decades. The city declared a public health emergency for the first time in more than 100 years.

“We had more than 100 chains of transmission,” said Dr. Oxiris Barbot, the city’s health commissioner at the time, and now the president and chief executive of United Hospital Fund.

“Keeping all of that straight was a challenge,” she recalled. “And to have to investigate over 20,000 exposures like that, that was huge.”

Working with community leaders, city officials hurriedly administered about 200,000 doses of vaccine. More than 550 city staff members were involved in the response, and the final cost to the city’s health department topped $8 million.

The C.D.C. is working with state and local health departments to identify pockets of low vaccination and prepare them for outbreaks, Dr. Patel said. The agency is also training health care providers to recognize measles symptoms, particularly in patients with a history of international travel.

Measles is a slippery adversary, but public health is intimately familiar with the tools needed to contain it: screening, tracing contacts and vaccinating the susceptible.

“We’re not helpless bystanders,” Dr. Omer said. “The focus needs to be on meat-and-potatoes public health.”

The Federal Aviation Administration is warning travelers and pilots the total solar eclipse in April could snarl air traffic, especially at airports located in what is known as the path of totality.

The FAA posted what it called “special air traffic procedures” on its website Thursday that listed the possible impacts on the industry and what airports could be subject to operational changes.

Hundreds of airports are either located in the path totality or are close enough in proximity to service aviators interested in the phenomenon.

The bulletin includes major airports such as Dallas-Fort Worth International, Indianapolis International and Cleveland International.

Starting before noon on April 8, the Moon will completely block the Sun for several minutes, leading to temporary darkness that will begin over Texas and travel over 15 states.

All of the Lower 48 will be subject to a partial event, but communities that are under what space experts call the umbra will have prime viewing of the narrow path of totality.

More than 30 million Americans are estimated to live in the path, with millions more expected to travel to states such as Texas, Ohio and New York to see the spectacle.

The event is similar to an eclipse that happened back in 2017, when the Sun was temporarily shielded by the Moon from coast to coast.

The National Air Traffic Controllers Association reported air traffic during the previous event increased 20-40% at control centers that were in range of the path of totality.

The association said Indianapolis Center saw a 36% increase, its Seattle Center reported an uptick of 33% and Kansas City saw a 35% jump when compared to typical workday traffic.

While commercial traffic stays within a manageable range, air traffic controllers said the addition of civilian aircraft causes numbers to exceed holiday traffic volumes.

The combination of any type of weather systems on top of the increased traffic can lead to significant delays, like what happened to Chicago’s main airports during the event nearly seven years ago.

The FAA warns pilots that special restrictions may also be issued three to five days ahead of the event.

Neither the FAA nor the Transportation Security Administration have released specific guidance for passengers ahead of the eclipse, but as a general recommendation, airlines always suggest arriving at the airport at least two hours before departure.

Some airlines, such as Delta and Southwest, have offered special flights designated to view the path of totality from around 30,000 feet, but deals lasted only a few hours before selling out.

One of the last communities in the continental US to see the path of totality will be Houlton, Maine, where the entire event will be over by 5 p.m. EDT.
