Walking Time Between Stations

Walking can be quick and easy to get around Metro stations, especially during busy times. This map shows you how much time it takes to walk between some stations.

Doha Metro Walking Time Between Stations

To travel using the Doha Metro, you must buy a travel card. As part of its efforts to promote sustainability and preserve the environment, Doha Metro has suspended the use of paper tickets. Currently there are two different types of travel cards available:

Standard Cards

These are rechargeable cards for travel in Standard Class & Family Class . The card costs QR 10 and needs to be topped up with the journey fare.

In the Standard & Family class, one journey costs QR 2, and the maximum daily charge is QR 6.

Doha Metro Standard Card

Gold Club Cards

These are rechargeable cards for travel in Gold Class which is more luxurious. The card costs QR 100 and needs to be topped up with the journey fare.

In the Gold class, one journey costs QR 10, and the maximum daily charge is QR 30.

Doha Metro Gold Card

You can see a comparison of the two types of cards here:

These cards are valid on both Doha Metro and Lusail Tram . Note that Lusail Tram does not have Gold Class. So Gold Club cards can be used in Standards Class.

30 Day Metro Pass

Doha Metro & Lusail Tram have launched a new 30-day metro pass, offering unlimited rides for QR120 . The pass is valid for 30 consecutive days from the date you first tap the card at the gate.

Standard cards can be purchased at all Metro stations (from vending machines) and some licensed retailers. Gold Club cards can be purchased at Gold Club offices in all Metro stations.

Standard and Gold Club cards can be recharged at station travel card vending machines, the Qatar Rail website, and the mobile app. Gold Club cards can also be recharged at Gold Club offices in Metro stations.

A rechargeable travel card can be used repeatedly as it is valid for five years .

  • If you use a Standard card, the rate per journey is QR 2.
  • If you use a Gold Club card, the rate per journey is QR 10 .

The rate per journey is the same irrespective of the distance . The travel card should be scanned/punched twice during any journey: first while entering the platform and second time while exiting the platform.

Maximum Charge Per Day

If you travel multiple times during one day using Standard or Gold Club cards, there is a daily limit on the amount charged. The maximum is three times the normal journey rate. From the fourth ride onwards, the ride is free of charge.

That means you will pay no more than QR 6 a day (for Standard Card) and QR 30 a day (for Gold Club Card) no matter how many journeys you make in a single day.

NOTE: You don’t need to tap out and in when changing stations. However, there is a 90-minute limit on travel throughout the network. You will be charged after spending 90 minutes on the network. 90 minutes is enough time to travel any possible route on the Doha Metro network and should not be an issue even if you are changing trains at an intersection.

The trains on the Doha Metro network operate every 3 minutes , so you do not have to wait more than 3 minutes for the next train.

Doha Metro Interior

Anyone aged five and above needs a Travel Card to travel on Doha Metro. Children aged four and below do not need a Travel Card and must be accompanied by a fare-paying adult.

  • Adult and child fares are the same for any class.

A child must be nine years old or above to travel alone on the network. Younger kids should be accompanied by someone at least 16 years of age.

Doha Metro Metrolink Bus

Mowasalat is running MetroLink feeder buses providing first and last-mile connectivity to Qatar Rail customers within a 2 to 5 km radius of the Doha Metro stations. Over three years, the MetroLink route network has grown to around 60 routes covering areas around metro stations.

Metrolink Price: The service is offered free of charge.

Metrolink Frequency: The frequency of the bus route is 12 minutes, 15 minutes or 20 minutes.

How To Use: You can download the Karwa Journey Planner App on your mobile phone and get a free QR Code. You need to tap in and tap out this QR code each time when you enter and exit the Metrolink bus. From January 2024, you can also tap in and tap out using the Doha Metro travel card (Standard or Gold). Karwa smart cards are also valid for tap in and tap out.

Metrolink operates at the following times:

  • Sunday to Wednesday: 5:30 am to 11:59 pm
  • Thursday: 5:30 am to 1:00 am
  • Friday: 2:00 pm to 1:00 am
  • Saturday: 6:00 am to 11:59 pm

You can find the MetroLink route maps here .

How to Qatar: Navigating the Doha Metro

qatar rail plan my journey

Buy a Railcard

Queuing up for single-use tickets is a hassle, especially with kids in tow. Instead, get everyone travel cards for QR 10 each. You will have to add credit to the cards before use. Register cards on the Qatar Rail app, so that even if you or another family member lose one, you can still transfer the remaining balance. You can also top up your travel card via the app with a credit card. Fares are staggeringly cheap at the time of writing, with a flat rate of QR 2 per trip, for both children and adults (kids four and under are free). Children need to be at least nine years old to ride alone, or they may accompany another adult or family member who is at least 16 years of age.

Download the Qatar Rail App

As of late last year, all three metro lines have opened and are fully operational. View the entire metro network and check train schedules via your smartphone by downloading the Qatar Rail app. You can also figure out how to get around Doha on the metro by using their “Plan My Journey” function.

Consider Gold Club

A more comfortable rail experience can be had with the Gold Club travel card. While the card is a pricey QR 100, it virtually guarantees that you’ll have a seat regardless of the time of day. It should be noted that both the regular and Gold Club travel cards expire after five years. Again, like the regular travel card, you need to put additional credit on the card before use.

Pay attention to metro exits

Doha is a city in flux, and as a result, some exits merely lead to a glorified construction pit. Examine the boards inside the station to make sure that you are exiting close to your destination or consult one of the friendly staff.

qatar rail plan my journey

Catch the Metrolink

While the Doha Metro coverage is decent, the network is still relatively limited. However, you can reach a surprising number of places by using Metrolink. This is a free shuttle bus service that gets you from the station to popular destinations that are just that bit too far to walk. Every station has a map outlining Metrolink routes; you can also check the Qatar Rail or Karwa Bus apps for details (Metrolink buses have the letter M on them). They run during the metro’s normal operating hours.

Hop on the MetroExpress

For access to and from West Bay QIC and the DECC, use the MetroExpress. It’s a free service for registered users of the MetroExpress app. The six-seater minivans are comfortable, clean and perfect for families. You order one through the app, much like an Uber. Generally, they arrive quickly, although we’ve waited up to five minutes for pickup. There’s no word on whether the service will expand to other stations, but for now, it’s a helpful service for those based in the West Bay area. For everyone else, there’s the option of a folding bike (we’re only partially joking!).

Hail a Karwa cab

A combination of rail and car can often get you around faster than just driving a car alone and can shorten the amount of time spent sitting in traffic. For trips relatively close to the station, hail a cab using the Karwa app, which offers metro commuters discounted fares for trips to/from the metro (within three kilometres) with the promo code RAIL.

Watch out for deals

If you have family or friends visiting, get them a day pass for QR6 (QR 30 for Gold Club) which nets them unlimited travel on the metro for the entire day. That said, a spare travel card functions much the same, as the daily cap is set at QR6 (QR 30 for Gold Club).

Tourist travels

To promote the services of Doha Metro to the wider community, Qatar Rail often offers free rides to those attending big events in the city, particularly sporting ones. This not only helps users save a small bit of cash but also reduces the amount of traffic on the roads. In any case, you should probably consider this without the free tickets, as no one enjoys being stuck in traffic late at night!

I Think metro cards should be liked with apple wallet so we can use it whenever we want like if i don’t carry the wallet then i have to pay like 6qr just like that and i am sure it happens with others too…………
QATAR RAIL METRO aap is wonderful handling easy way to use and each kindly details are can we easy to see on the app our travel card balance and other’s think we see any time if we have two Qatar rail metro card so easy to see details about each cards but we cannot process to remove cards from the app should who’s using the Qatar rail app should they want easy remove Qatar rail metro card details on the app

Good but can be great

App is very good, functional and well designed but missing a few navigation, with a better easy to use UI, more user can use the app to its full potential. Also should bring Apple Wallet compatibility, where users can use their phone or watch to pass through the gates.
