4 beautiful Kerala homes that are deeply entwined with nature
By AD Staff
A Riverside Kerala Home Where the Glass Facade Brings Stunning Views Indoors

On the banks of the Chaliyar river, 12km away from Kozhikode in Kerala, is the home of an NRI couple who too parted with the concrete jungle for something closer to the real thing—a lush, 6-acre plot of land. What was meant to be a weekend home turned into a secluded escape for the family in the year of lockdowns and social-distancing.

The 2,220-square-foot glass-and-concrete structure, topped by a wing-shaped inverted roof of lightweight steel and wood, peeks out from this vegetation and quietly puts on a show. “Like a mirror, the structure reflects the sky, river and greenery. Solar-reflective glazing creates a unique ocular experience: a façade that shape-shifts as day morphs into dusk,” the architects explain.

In contrast to the façade, the material palette of concrete, kadappa tiles and wooden slats on the ceiling makes for interiors that are a nod to Kerala’s vernacular architecture and feel cosy and lived-in. In the two bedrooms, on the first floor, the glass façade allows one to simultaneously revel in the feeling of lying outdoors under a canopy of trees and enjoy the creature comforts of a vintage wooden four-poster bed. The view remains the hero even in the powder room, which is fitted with a picture window that overlooks the river.
A Sustainable Family Home in Kerala Built Around a Jackfruit Tree
Photo: Anand Jaju and Syam Sreesylam/The Wallmakers
A jackfruit tree and the need for privacy formed the basis of architect Vinu Daniel’s creative exploration when he was approached by a client to build a family home for eight near Ernakulam, Kerala. The tree in question held court over one corner of the site. “This gave form to the idea of a compound wall that revolves around the tree and twists upwards to join the ferro-cement shell roof of the house seamlessly,” the architect explains. “This in turn created a small intimate space, landscaped like a Japanese zen garden,” he adds. Though located near the entrance of the home, this courtyard has ample shade and privacy for family gatherings and is also easily accessible from the kitchen.

The 2,750 square-foot home is spread across two storeys. The first floor accommodates an open living and dining area, three bedrooms, kitchen, and an outdoor barbecue. A fourth bedroom and reading area are housed on the second floor, alongside an adjoining balcony and terrace. Staying true to the firm’s sustainable design philosophy, the house has been constructed from compressed stabilised earth blocks (CSEB) and rammed earth walls.
The house contains several openings shielded by grills made from discarded pipes from the scrapyard. Photo: Anand Jaju and Syam Sreesylam/The Wallmakers
Across the home, large openings in the walls ensure plenty of natural light, cross-ventilation and views of the surrounding greenery. For both privacy and security, grills were designed by piecing together discarded pipes from the scrapyard. “These pipes then come alive and fold in and out to become chandeliers in all the rooms,” Daniel points out. “This is not only in line with the concept of upcycling but also creates art pieces that cast veristic shadows on the walls throughout the day.”
A Community of Villas Inspired by the Native Architecture of Kerala
Each villa slices the mountain on three distinct levels, blending into the landscape. Photo: Courtesy Earthitects
“Our ever-growing cities bursting at the seams have been the least safe during the pandemic, and with internet connectivity making 'work from anywhere' possible, many have migrated to smaller towns that provide socially-distanced infrastructure in a process of reverse urbanization,” points out George E. Ramapuram, the principal architect at Earthitects, a Bangalore-based design firm.

Pushing the envelope is their latest project called Stone Lodges in Wayanad, a gated community of fifteen villas on thirteen acres of land, inspired by the grammar of mountain lodges, combined with Kerala’s native design aesthetic. “Staying true to our philosophy, the materials used are natural, with wooden flooring, random-rubble walls, cobblestone pathways, and log rafters,” Ramapuram says. Each villa slices the mountain on three distinct levels, blending into the landscape. Given the sprawl, the facility is secured with advanced security systems and other amenities like rainwater harvesting, the upkeep of organic vegetable gardens, beehouses to conserve native bee species, and carefully-selected flower gardens to welcome indigenous butterflies.

The first and second lodge (or level) house the spacious 7,320 square-foot residence built on a 26,500 square-foot plot of land, with one bedroom at the entry level and two below, while the third level has an infinity pool surrounded by lily ponds. Each deck is designed in such a way that it has an endless, unobstructed forest view panorama. Everything including the floors, joinery, switchboards, skirting and furniture are handcrafted with live edge teak wood. Other natural materials used are clay roof tiles, eucalyptus poles in the ceiling, lapotra granite for counters and stone deck floors.
A Spacious Kerala Home that Propagates Courtyard Living
Courtyards have always been an essential part of traditional Indian homes , and even today find relevance. Once such home is this 5BHK bungalow in Palarivattom, Kerala, designed by Athira Prakash and Subi Surendran of Aavishkar Architects.
Indoor plants, such as golden bamboo, dot the home. Photo: Justin Sebastian/Aavishkar Architects
Since the home is sandwiched between houses on all sides, it has been well-planned to bring the views inside and create an introverted space," shares Prakash. The white facade gives the home its identity, pairing well with the terracotta walls. The home is spread across two floors and five bedrooms. The public spaces are planned around a central courtyard and this is where, truly, the heart of the home is.
The living room merges with the dining area, which further opens out into a garden. Photo: Justin Sebastian/Aavishkar Architects
The living room merges into the dining; the table and chairs were customised and manufactured by a local vendor. The space further opens into a garden. "The public spaces are conceived as inward-facing structures enclosing a central landscaped courtyard—which results in a light-filled, spacious, living, breathing abode with striking contemplative open spaces. A seamless flow of spaces is one of the highlights of this home—these open units provide privacy from the outdoors yet allow the dwellers to experience the outdoors," says Prakash.

For many travelers, Kerala is South India's most serenely beautiful state. This slender coastal strip is defined by its layered landscape: almost 373 miles (600km) of glorious Arabian Sea coast and beaches; a languid network of glistening backwaters; and the spice- and tea-covered hills of the Western Ghats, dotted with fiercely protected wildlife reserves and cool hill stations such as Munnar. Just setting foot on this swathe of soul-soothing, palm-shaded green will slow your subcontinental stride to a blissed-out amble. Kerala is a world away from the hectic action of the rest of India, its long, fascinating backstory illuminated by historically evocative cities like Kochi (Cochin) and Thiruvananthapuram (Trivandrum).

The Best Kerala Itinerary for 7 Days or More
In this post, I’ll share with you the best Kerala itinerary based on my experience of travelling to the state again and again in the last 6 years.
Kerala is a culturally rich, liberal, and breathtakingly beautiful state of southern India. It’s vastly different from the northern side of India both in landscape and cuisine. So, planning what to do here on a limited time can be overwhelming.
I will help with your Kerala trip planning with an itinerary for Kerala for 7 days with ideas to modify it for longer or even shorter durations.
If you already have a basic knowledge about the state, then jump to the Kerala itinerary .
I’ ve tried to cover all bases in the post to help you plan a trip to Kerala . Expand the table of contents below and jump to the relevant section if you want to.
The post contains affiliate links for tours, hotels etc. This means if you make any purchase through the links in the post, I may get a commission without any additional cost to you.
A Quick Outline
Kerala – God’s Own Country
With an area of 38,863 square kilometers, Kerala is one of the smaller states in India. Located in the western coast it has the best of both the worlds – mountains and the sea. And it is steeped in ancient folklore, vibrant dance forms and unique culinary experiences for travelers.
Kerala is a state of contrasts .
It has the hot and humid beaches on one side and the cool and high-altitude hill stations of the other.
It is one of the most culturally rooted places on earth yet also famous for progressive political ideology.
It’s a state that has preserved forests and natural resources like no other yet managed to be economically prosperous.
A state that is highly political, but allures people from everywhere seeking serenity.
A state with a literacy rate of nearly 100% yet also a state that often makes to news for religious dogmatism thriving in some areas.
I could go on about the socio-political paradox of Kerala that continues to intrigue and perplex me. But let’s stick to the more practical details here.
The Best Kerala Itinerary at a glance
While you can tweak as per your liking after reading the full article, this is the plan I recommend for your first vacation in Kerala.
Day 1: Reach Kochi via train or flight and then hire a cab (or rent a self-drive car) for your Kerala trip. Explore Kochi and end the day with a Kathakali performance.
Day 2: Drive to Alleppey or Kumarakom and stay in a houseboat. It’s time to rejuvenate in luxury after the hectic sightseeing at Kochi.
Day 3 & 4: Drive to Munnar on day 3 and explore the exceptional beauty of nature. You will need to stay at-least 2 nights in this resplendent hill station.
Day 5: Drive to Thekkady for wildlife safari and to witness the Kalarypayattu performance.
Day 6: Drive to Kovalam for some luxury experiences, much needed after the hectic sightseeing in the hills
Day 7: Drive to Trivandrum for exploring the historic charms and shopping before you depart.
🚙 🚗 Rent a Zoomcar for self-driving in your Kerala Road Trip 🚔
In a 10-day Kerala itinerary you can include a day-trip to the Athirapally waterfalls from Kochi. From Thekkady you can drive to Varkala – an offbeat coastal paradise.
From Varkala you can easily visit the Jatayu Earth center – a new landmark in Kerala. Then drive to Kovalam the next day and depart from Trivandrum on the 10th day.
You can go slightly off-the-beaten track even in a packed 7-day Kerala tour. Skip the wildlife experience in Thekkady for a day trip to Athirapally waterfall. Or stay near the Varkala beach instead of Kovalam.
First time in Kerala? I recommend booking Kerala tour with Sangine Holidays . You can ask them to customise based on your preferences.
2 Weeks Kerala Itinerary
Most of the tourist destinations and international airports are concentrated in the southern part of Kerala. So, most of the shorter Kerala tours are also designed to explore the south. Entire northern half of Kerala is therefore left out in my 7 and 10-day itinerary above.
If you can plan 2 weeks in Kerala , you could see how the culture and cuisine transform as we move from north Kerala towards the south, even in this rather tiny state.
Northern Kerala towards the Karnataka border has a strong Arabic influence in their culture, architecture and cuisine. Here you’re more likely to get the best type of non-vegetarian dishes like Keralite biryani, chicken curry etc.
As you move towards the south you notice a distinct change. Towards the hills in the south there is a dominant influence of Hinduism. You’ll find a plethora of pure vegetarian restaurants serving Appam-ishtew, idli, iddiyappam etc .
On the coastline, there is a larger European influence in the monuments but also a blend of old Hindu culture as seen in the attire and performances. So, here’s how I’d plan a longer itinerary of Kerala for 2 weeks .
Day 1: Take a train or overnight bus to Kasargod from Bangalore or anywhere else.
Day 2: Explore Bekal Fort , beaches and backwaters of Kasargod
Day 3: Drive (or take a bus) to Sultan Bathery in Wayanad . Take a wildlife safari there
Day 4: Visit Edakkal Caves and Banasura Sagara Dam in Wayanad
Day 5: Trek to Chembra Peak in the morning. Have a brunch and drive to Palakkad
Day 6: Explore Palakkad – Palakkad Fort, Malampuzha Dam and Hanuman Temple
Day 7: Drive to Kochi via Athirapally falls
Day 8: Exploring Kochi
Day 9: Drive 126 km to Alleppey and explore the backwaters, beaches and churches.
Day 10: Scenic drive to Munnar
Day 11: Exploring the best of Munnar and Chinnakanal
Day 12: Skip Thekkady and drive to Varkala
Day 13: Take a memorable day trip to Munroe Island
Day 14: Explore Varkala and drive to Kovalam
Day 15: Drive to Trivandrum for departure

A quick note on name of the places
Because of the colonial history of India, many popular destinations have an anglicized name that were coined by the European colonizers. The names have been reversed to their original form post indepedence.
However, because of the complex pronunciation, people unofficially refer to them by their anglicized names. So, before you get confused by these names, here is a short lexicon of Kerala’s cities for you.
- Cochin is the anglicized name for Kochi (which is not at all difficult to pronounce)
- Calicut is the anglicized name of Kozhikhode (pronounced as “koh-ree-kode”)
- Trivandrum, the capital of the state of Kerala is the anglicized name of Thiruvananthapuram (a proper tongue-twister challenge for foreigners)
- Alleppey is the anglicized name of Alappuzha , city in the namesake district
One Week in Kerala – The Plan in Details
So, let’s dive deeper into the wilderness of Kerala and take a virtual tour that will make you fall in love with the state.
Day 1 in Kerala – Arrive at the Historic Kochi
Kochi is the unofficial tourism and cultural capital of Kerala. It has a well-connected railway station as well as an international airport. So, this is a great place to start your trip.
As soon as you arrive, bargain the rates for a local cab. Normally the rates start from Rs. 12/km for lower-end 4-seater cars, and the fares would go up for the type of car, number of seats, travel season, night rates etc.
You can check the rates here to have a fair idea of the current rates and avoid being scammed.
Kochi is a bustling modern city haunted by a long, intriguing history. It’s the place believed to be Vasco da Gama’s passage to India .
Then there’s the oldest Jewish quarters in India that you can find in Kochi, the Pardesi Synagogue standing as a tall testimony to the thousand years of religious tolerance in India.
There are the Dutch Palace , Portuguese churches as well as remnants of the Bristish colonialism. And thriving despite centuries of brutal invasions and colonial atrocities are the age-old pagan art forms that you can witness through dance performances, artefacts in the markets and music.
Kochi’s beauty lies not in its architectural grandeur but in the unique stories behind the buildings, the streets and corners.
Kochi Sightseeing Plan
Assuming you reached Kochi at around 10 am, you can drive directly to Mattancherry Palace . The Mattancherry Palace also known as the Dutch Palace was actually a monument gifted by the Portuguese to the Indian raja. It was later extended and renovated by the Dutch in 17th century.
After a tour of the palace, enjoy a walking tour of the Jew Town and visit the Pardesi Synagogue .
Then drive back to Fort Kochi . There are some amazing places here for having a delicious lunch.
I have created a map here for a walking tour of Kochi.
The best way to explore Kochi in one or two days is with a local tour guide. Check our my recommendations below.
🌟A guided walking tour of Fort Kochi and Mattancherry with a local
🌟A private tuktuk tour with hotel pickup. This is suitable for people of all ages and small families
Stay near Fort Kochi , so that you can easily walk to the beach to see the photogenic Chinese fishing nets in the evening during the golden hour. Then return to Fort Kochi for dinner and an enthralling Kathakali dance performance in the Kerala Kathakali Center. It is one of the eight classical dance forms in India and also one of the most difficult dance forms in the world.
Best places to Stay in Kochi
Hotel Marine Inn – A 5-star luxury hotel located at the Marine Drive, in close proximity to Kochi’s highlights Casino Hotel – CGH church – A sustainable 5-star luxury property located midway between Marine Drive and the Dutch Palace. In the mid-range and budget category, Fort Bridge View hotel located in Fort Kochi is the perfect place.
Check out other options and get best prices below.
Day 2 – Relax in the backwaters of Alleppey or Kumarkom
After an exhausting, yet fulfilling day exploring Kochi, it’s time to relax in the backwaters of Kerala. Today we will drive 55km to Alleppey, often touted as the Venice of India .
But before that we can wake up early and walk to the beach to catch a glimpse of the sunrise and explore the morning markets.
After a wholesome breakfast at hotel, we set out for Alleppey or Kumarakom. They are on two sides of the Vembanad lake – the largest natural lake in India.
You can either stay in a houseboat or in a hotel on the banks of Vembanad lake .
A day in Alleppey
Assuming that you started from Kochi at around 10 am you will reach comfortably by 11:30 am. Kochi is a bustling city with heavy traffic, so we need to account for that time.
Take a boat-ride for 3-6 hours to explore the beauty of canals, watch the birds enjoying the sun and the blossoms of the lake, and enjoy the tranquility of nature.
While on your boat or Shikara, visit the Pathiramanal island to say “hi” to the thousands of birds that flock into the magical backwaters during winter.
Stop midway at a village, to relish on sea-food prepared with fresh catch of the day mixed with Kerala’s spices. If you book a houseboat for stay you can have a traditional fish-meal for lunch in the boat itself.
On our trip, we stayed in a lakeside cottage and hired a shikara for maneuvering through the narrow canals and have lunch at one of the villages on the lakeside.
After the soulful trip, take some rest in the afternoon to avoid the scorching sun. Then drive to explore the beaches, churches and temples of Alleppey.
Next visit the Alleppey lighthouse, Alleppey beach and the loveliest Marari beach at sunset.
Once again, a paid trip will help you optimize your short time in Alleppey. These are the best-rated tours.
🌟 A 6-hour private Shikara cruise through the canals and lakes of Alleppey
🌟 There’s a popular 2-day houseboat trip from Kochi to Alleppey to explore the backwaters of Alleppey and then return to Kochi Port.
Best places to Stay in Alleppey

☑️Organised houseboat tours
A fleet of luxurious houseboats floating in the backwaters of Kerala.
Sterling Lake Palace Alleppey
While I haven’t stayed here, I have always been impressed by the hospitality at Sterling properties in India. They are great options for affordable luxury accommodations .
Day 3 in Kerala trip plan: Drive to Munnar
Munnar is one of my favorite places in India. I think it is the best hill station in south India which despite the hype, manages to leave you awestruck at its raw natural beauty.
Speckled with waterfalls, adorned by lush green tea gardens, and pine forests, and surrounded by lofty hills, Munnar does seem like God’s own country.
While most people stick to places near the Munnar town, the outskirts, especially the Chinnakanal region is breathtaking.
On Day 3, you have to drive about 180 km from Alleppey to reach Munnar. While driving you will bid goodbye to the coastal warmth and move higher towards the hills.
As you enter the serpentine roads of the Western Ghats , turn off the AC and wind down the windows of your car.
The temperature has suddenly dropped, and the scenery has completely changed within a 4-hour drive. Watch out for the scenic viewpoints at every turn.
Try not to stop everywhere you want to, lest you get late, or the driver gets annoyed.
Don’t have a fixed itinerary for the day. Rather just stop and absorb the beauty around you wherever you can.
I highly recommend staying away from the city center and close to some tea garden. Keep an eye for the numerous waterfalls as well while driving to your hotel.
Best places to Stay in Munnar
The beautiful park in Sterling Munnar, covered in green is full of great activities for Children
Sterling Munnar
☑️Family Activities ☑️Best Location
Located in Chinnakanal area right opposite to the Tata Tea Garden, this is where we stayed on our second trip to Munnar. A perfect place to stay on a family vacation, with great activities for kids as well as the elderly.
Elephant Passage Resort
☑️5-star luxury ☑️Great Views
Located 25km from city center, this is the most affordable 5-star luxury you can get in Munnar. There’s jacuzzi rooms, infinity pool and great views of nature.
Day 4 – Exploring Munnar
After a fulfilling brunch at hotel or outside, you can set off for a long exhausting tour of Munnar. One day may not be enough, but here’s an itinerary covering the most memorable places in Munnar.
Drive to Eravikulam National Park right after breakfast. You need to set aside at least 2-3 hours for the trip, because of the long queue for tickets, the safari bus-ride and exploring on foot.
The beauty of this sensitive Nilgiri-biosphere is awe-inspiring. You will lose the idea of time while exploring the waterfalls and spotting the Niligiri tahr (an endangered species of animal found here) while walking in the forest.
After this, head to Kanan Devan hills for a tour of the Tea factory
Then drive to Mattupetty Dam . If it is too crowded (which likely it will be), then drive to Kundala lake for a boat ride.
And then, skip Top Station and save yourself some time for the other spectacles.
Similarly, if you want to watch the elephants, Carmelagiri is a touristy location where you can ride on them. But a more offbeat place for Elephant sighting is the Anayirangal Park (aka the Elephant Abode) in Chinnakanal . For more such tips and detailed guidance on your Munnar trip, check out my Munnar itinerary .
Like any other hill stations, most places close by 5pm. Stop at the Lockhart viewpoint on your way back to the hotel.
Shall I tell you a secret?
Skip the tea factory tours in Munnar and instead head to Kolukkumalai in the early morning.
Technically it’s in Tamil Nadu state, but Chinnakanal is the closest getway to this hidden paradise on earth which also has one of the world’s oldest and higest tea-factory .
Take a tea factory tour here instead after a bumpy jeep-ride.
Day 5 – Thrilling Thekkady
Thekkady is situated only 90 km away from Munnar, but it can take about 2.5 – 3 hours to reach because of the hair-pin belts. It is the home to Periyar National Park, the abode of Royal Bengal tigers among many other stealthy predators.
It’s also significant for religious pilgrims as this is where the trek to the Ayappa Temple of Sabrimala begins.
Make sure you stay close to the Periyar National Park which is the center of all the activities in Thekkady itinerary.
Thekkady Sightseeing Plan
Assuming you started from Munnar at 9-9:30, it will be almost noon by the time your reach Thekkady.
Head to the reception of the Periyar National Park and get the brochure for all activities they offer and their timings
First you can go on a jeep ride through the tea and spice plantations. It will also take you to Ottakathalamedu, a hill-top from where you cans see magnificent panoramic views.
Then, after a quick lunch it will be time for the unmissable Periyar Lake Cruise . You will see a host of migratory birds in the lake, deer and antelopes on the banks, and, if lucky, you have a chance to spot elephants here too.
Spend the evening shopping in Kumily and then head on to Mudra Cultural Centre to witness Kalaripayattu . This is an ancient martial art form which is both brave and beautiful.
If you have the energy, you can also book a thrilling night safari in the forest. Or simply rest at night; you’ve had a long day already.
Best places to Stay in Thekkady
Abad Green Forest Resort ☑️Best Location
Located in the Periyar National Park area, this 4-star property is the best place for luxury jungle experience.
Chrissie’s hotel ☑️Pocket-friendly
This is one of the most popular pocket-friendly property near Periyar National Park. It’s also pet-friendly!
Day 6 – Pamper yourself at Kovalam
Our trip is coming to an end soon. But don’t be sad as it’s time to drive to Kovalam. Located approximately 215 kilometers (134 miles) from Thekkady, it will take around 5-6 hours by road.
While like everywhere else in Kerala there’s a plethora of options available for different budget types, I highly recommend booking a beach-side spa resort in Kovalam.
In most places in Kerala you can easily stay in budget hotels and explore outdoors all day. But Kovalam and the Alappuzha regions are famous for Ayurvedic Spa and medicinal treatment. Why not pamper yourself a bit here?
Kovalam itinerary for the day
Assuming you started from Thekkady at 9 am, it will be almost 3pm by the time you reach Kovalam.
You can stop for lunch on your way to the hotel, or have lunch immediately after checking in.
You can then head off to the three beautiful beaches of Kovalam – the Lighthouse beach , the Hawah beach and the Samudra beach . You can trek to the short cliffs for capturing amazing views.
You can spend the entire evening strolling in the beaches or go for an Ayurvedic spa massage .
Best places to Stay in Kovalam
🥇 Raviz Kovalam (formerly Leela Kovalam)
☑️Stunning Location ☑️5-star Luxury
Located at the cliff-top the views from this hotel is heavenly. The water looks vanilla-blue from here.
Samudra Leisure beach resort
☑️Pocket-friendly☑️Spa available
At nearly half the rate of Raviz or Taj, you can enjoy luxury at pocket-friendly rate . This also has a wellness center for Ayurvedic spa.
Day 7: Bidding goodbye from Trivandrum
The last day of a vacation always makes your heart heavy. But don’t worry, we still have a lot to do today before we depart from Trivandrum in the evening.
It is located only 19 km away from Kovalam and you can reach easily within 30 minutes through the smooth coastal road. But before that we will take a detour to Poovar, a floating town in the Poovar lake near Kovalam.
After a delectable lunch in the Poovar island you can drive to the airport for final departure.
A guide to Kerala Trip Planning
Now that you have your Kerala trip plan and a detailed 7-day itinerary of Kerala, I want to share some practical information to help you travel. Here are a few travel tips and trivia about Kerala that you need to know before going on this vacation.
How to reach Kerala?
Kerala is well-connected by air, rail, and road. There are three main international airports located in Kochi , Trivandrum , and Calicut respectively. Several railway stations connect Kerala to other parts of India.
All the destinations mentioned here can be covered on the most scenic road trips from Bangalore , the city where I live in.
🚙 🚗 Rent a Zoomcar for self-driving all the way in Kerala 🚔
Going around in Kerala
While I’m all for exploring India solo, I get that it can be a bit overwhelming if you’re not a local. So, your best bet is to rent a cab with an English-speaking driver.
But hey, if you’re up for a little adventure, local transport like KSTDC buses work great for inter-city travel, and tuk-tuks are your go-to for getting around town.
If you’re the kind who likes to take the wheel, you can also book a self-drive car. Just make sure to download the maps and have an online translator app handy.
📲 Getting simcard is difficult in India for foreign nationals. The easiest way to stay connected is with an India e-sim . 🤳
Cuisine and Dining in Kerala
While you have a plethora of “safe” options in most hotels in India, Kerala’s authentic cuisine is a must-try.
Rice is the staple food of Kerala and most of the dishes are just the most innovative, mind-boggling ways you can use rice. These are my favorite Keralite dishes.
- Kerala porotta aka Malabar porota(a white-flour Indian bread) with fish-curry
- Appam-stew ( Appam is a type of pancake made of fermented rice flour and coconut milk which is usually had with a vegetable stew)
- Iddiyappam with curry (looks like idli made of rice noodles)
- Puttu with curry (Putti is a cylindrical shaped steamed rice cake)
- Karimeen Fry
- Bamboo chicken biriyani
Although known for sumptuous sea food and one of the few states in India where beef preparations are mainstream, Kerala is actually a great place for vegans.
Many of the authentic dishes as you can see in my list above use only vegan ingredients sourced locally.
If you have time, and want to do something memorable, take a home cooking class of Kerala cuisine
What is the best time to visit Kerala?
The best time to visit Kerala is between November to January . This is the winter season, when coastal Kerala is still hot but comfortable. Rest of the year is extremely hot and humid, except for the Western Ghats region.
If you want to spend most of the time in the Western Ghats of Kerala, you can visit any time of the year.
In fact, if you want to see the famous boatrace in Alapuzha , you should plan your trip around August . This is the peak monsoon season, so temperatures cool down significantly. It will still be humid in the coastal region, but the hills will look spectacular.
The boat races are held as part of the “Onam” celebrations. It is the harvest festival of Kerala, and one of the most important days in Malaylam Calendar. ( Malaylam is the native language of Kerala, also the native culture).
Just check for the weather reports before embarking on road-trip in the monsoon .
A few more Frequently Asked Questions Answered
How many days are enough for kerala.
You cover the best of Kerala on a tight schedule in 7 days. This is usually the most practical time-frame most people have for spending in one state of India.
If you can extend your stay to 10 days, you will have more time to explore some of the destinations and enjoy some excursions.
If you are on an India tour and can’t afford a week for Kerala , 5 days should be enough to enjoy the unmissable experiences – natural beauty of Munnar, the backwaters of Alleppey or Kumarakom and the pristine beaches of Kovalam along with some cultural performances.
Ofcourse the longer you stay the better.
How to explore Kerala in 5 days?
A Kerala trip plan for 5 days should ideally have 1 day in Kochi for historic sightings, 1-day Alleppey for experiencing the backwaters and some amazing clean beaches and 2 days in Munnar for blissful Western Ghats experience.
On day 5, drive from Munnar to Kochi via Athirapally Falls. That’s what I suggest because I love Munnar. However, you can squeeze in Thekkady on Day 3 and skip Athirapally Falls.
If you are visiting Kerala for the first time and have only 5 days, I highly recommend this packed 5-day Kerala trip by Saffron India Tours .
What souvenirs can I bring back from Kerala?
You can bring the best quality of Indian spices – cardamom, cloves, cinnamon etc. What most people would ask me to bring whenever I travel to Kerala is “ Banana chips “. These thinly slices dried bananas deep-fried in coconut oil is a delicacy that can travel with you back to your home easily.
Besides I highly recommend buying Kerala cotton or Kerala silk sari. You can also buy “ Mundu ” for men in the same material. The white saris or mundu with golden border is a specialty.
Is Kerala safe for solo travelling?
Kerala is one of the safest states in India for tourists. Women usually don’t face lecherous stares or bad behavior in public places in Kerala. You are less likely to be scammed as a tourist. Only thing that scares me is the speed at which people drive in the hills in Kerala.
How expensive is Kerala?
In my experience I have found Kerala more expensive than the other states of south India when it comes to tourism. It is certainly the most famous tourist destination in south, and the tariff for cabs, fun-activities, etcetera is relatively higher.
Having said that it is completely affordable for budget backpackers with good hostels and homestays starting from Rs. 1000/- per day.

Thanks a lot Meggie.
I have been to Kerala 23 years ago! I really loved it but I was only there for a very short time. I remember seeing the houseboats on the backwaters and thinking I’d like to come back someday and do that. This is excellent information you have provided. Thanks for sharing!
Thank you so much for reading. Hope you come for another trip.
That’s a long time. I hope you come again to see what has changed and spend a night in the houseboat
I’ve had the opportunity to visit Kerala on four occasions within the past three years, and each visit brings forth a fresh allure. My most recent visit o Kovalam refreshed me for at least the next couple of months.
Thanks for this comprehensive post. Now I know what exactly to look for in my next trip.
Great post! The thing that draws me to Kerala is how lush, green and gorgeous the natural landscape can be. Places like the waterfalls at Munnar are just stunning and it would be fantastic to see all the wildlife. Oh, and then the food! 😀
Thank you so much. I hope you visit soon

What travelers are saying.
- Nadia E 1 contribution 0 5.0 of 5 bubbles Suresh made our day in Munnar special Suresh took us on a wonderful day out from munnar to the elephant village. We walked through a tea plantation town and got to say hello to some workers coming back for their lunch break who were very smiley and friendly. We stopped off at some waterfalls, a tiger cave and had a dip in the most serene river- straight out of The Jungle Book. It had rained that day so the likelihood of seeing elephants became pretty narrow. Suresh stayed with us until the very late evening waiting patiently. He took wonderful photos which he sent to us and we had wonderful chats with him along the way. He was able to offer us his personal insight as he is from a neighbouring village, had many friends along the way and his mother works on the tea plantation. Suresh you made a day in Munnar one to cherish forever. Thank you so much! 🙏🏼 Read more Review of: Wild Elephant Village( Anakulam) life tour ( By Munnar Info) Written April 5, 2024 This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Where to Stay in Kerala – My Favorite Hotels in Kerala (a Mix of Unique, Luxury & Eco-Friendly)
Are you looking for the best places to stay in Kerala?
During my time traveling around Kerala , I visited well over 20 hotels and have seen some quite unique places to stay in this part of India.
What I want to share with you here are my favorite hotels to give you an idea of where to stay in Kerala.
I was fortunate enough to see a very wide range of hotels. From unique to luxury and eco-friendly. So I hope this list offers something for any type of traveler.
Where to Stay in Kerala
1. spice village – thekkady.
I wanted to start my list of best places to stay in Kerala with Spice Village not because it’s the best hotel in Kerala but because it’s the most eco-friendly hotel I have seen in Kerala.
Spice Village is created to look like what the tribal villages of the local Manan tribe looked like. With a lot more luxury and comforts that is, but it creates a great atmosphere and makes this quite a unique place to stay in Kerala .
And what for me gives Spice Village even more value is the fact that it truly is an eco-friendly resort .
For starters, they offer reusable glass bottles and reusable shampoo bottles in the room instead of plastic. But it goes much further than that.
They use reclaimed wood for their furniture and use solar panels for most of their energy. They get most of their fruit, vegetables, and spices from their own organic garden, and their food waste is used as compost.
Plus, Spice Village doesn’t offer air conditioning (but it really isn’t that hot in this part of Kerala) and they even have a paper-making center, where they make paper out of old newspapers and magazines!
Also Read: What is Ecotourism?
The food at Spice Village is delicious, they have a nice swimming pool, an Ayurveda center, and friendly staff.
The cottages you stay in are comfortable and the whole resort has a very peaceful vibe. It’s a great place to relax and get away from it all!
Tip: the hotel is perfectly located if you plan to visit the Periyar Tiger Reserve .
Note: if you want to stay in this area but are looking for a bit more luxury, also check out Kofiland Resort . I did not stay at this resort but several of the people I traveled with did, and they all loved it. Plus the resort has cool-looking bungalows on stilts!
Click here for rates & details of Spice Village.
2. Lake Palace – Thekkady
If you want to get away from it all, Lake Palace might be the place for you!
Lake Palace is one of the former summer palaces of the King of Travancore , located on an island in the middle of the Periyar Lake. With its antique interior, it looks as if not much has changed since the palace was turned into a resort, which gives it that old-world charm.
It takes about 20 minutes by boat to get to this small, 6 room resort. And because it is located inside the Periyar Tiger Reserve , you might just be lucky enough to see a herd of elephants hanging around the lake.
Go on a trek to explore more of the reserve or simply enjoy the peace and quiet on this island.
Because it is such a small and quiet resort on a private island I wouldn’t recommend spending more than a couple of nights here. But it is definitely a unique place to stay in Kerala and you will get a better understanding of how the British rulers used to escape the heat.
3. Vythiri Resort – Wayanad
As I mention in my article about why you should visit Kerala , Kerala’s nature is incredible and that’s one of the main reasons people come to this part of India.
Therefore I think picking hotels or resorts that are surrounded by Kerala’s stunning nature are the best way to enjoy this state . And that’s exactly why Vythiri Resort is one of my favorite resorts in Kerala.
First of all the resort is located in Wayanad, which is one of my favorite parts of Kerala because of its unspoiled nature and slightly cooler climate. On top of that, the resort is set in a lush tropical rainforest with monkeys welcoming you whenever you leave your room!
You can choose to stay in a cute cottage, a villa with a private pool, or in one of their treehouses. Their spa is great, they have a pool, good food, and friendly staff.
This is a perfect place from which to explore the wildlife sanctuaries in the region, go hiking, or check out nearby Pookode Lake. If you would ask me where to stay in Kerala, this is definitely one of the first places that come to mind!
Tip: if you are looking for even more luxury, check out Vythiri Village , a five-star luxury resort in the same area.
Click here for rates and details of Vythiri Resort
4. Go Camping
Camping in Kerala was one of my favorite experiences. Sitting around a campfire at night and waking up to the sounds of nature in the morning… Perfect!
There are many river camps and mountain camps to choose from, and many will combine it with a trek through nature. We stayed at Kalypso Camp (see the map at the end of this article), but there are many different camping options in Kerala.
Camping can range from very simple tents to glamping in luxury . Whatever fits your needs and budget!
Booking.com offers a good selection of options.
5. Stay on a Houseboat on Kerala’s Backwaters
When you visit Kerala you really can’t miss the beautiful backwaters.
Picture a vast network of canals, lakes, and rivers surrounded by lush greenery with local houses dotted along the riverbeds. Spending the night on a houseboat in these backwaters has become one of the most popular things to do in Kerala .
Large kettuvallams (traditional boats, originally used to transport fish, rice and spices) have been converted into houseboats ranging from relatively simple to very luxurious.
I stayed on one of Rainbow Cruises’ houseboats. We boarded the boat in the afternoon, cruised around the area for a few hours until we docked for the night and were served a delicious meal on the boat.
It’s a very relaxing experience and a great way to see a part of the backwaters.
If you are short on time you can opt for just a day cruise or you can stay on board for several days to cover more distance.
Houseboats are available at Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Kottayam, Allappuzha, Ernakulam, Thrissur, and Kasaragod. And these days there are more than 1500 houseboats to choose from in Kerala!
Note: I loved exploring the backwaters on a houseboat. Unfortunately, shortly after my trip, I learned about some of the negative effects this type of tourism is having.
Many locals depend on the marine environment for their livelihoods and well-being. They fish, they use the water for rice farming, to wash their clothes, to cook, and to bathe.
The polluting diesel engines on these houseboats and the growing number of them, have polluted the water in many places. Depleted fish stocks and boatmen who discharge human and other waste directly into the lake rather than pay to dispose of it properly, are causing big issues for the local population.
So as long as there are no solar-powered houseboats, this can’t be called sustainable tourism .
If you visit Kerala’s backwaters and decide not to stay on these houseboats, I would recommend staying in a nearby hotel or homestay (see below for options) and renting a non-motorized boat or bicycle to explore the area (we went kayaking, which was great fun!).
6. Grand Hyatt Kochi Bolgatty – Kochi
The Grand Hyatt Kochi Bolgatty is the place to be if you are looking for a luxury hotel in Kerala’s second-largest city, Kochi.
It’s a luxurious, modern, waterfront resort with 264 spacious rooms, an indoor and outdoor pool, and all the facilities you expect from a Grand Hyatt.
Some of the best food I have had in Kerala was at this resort and I loved the friendly staff.
Yes, it might be splurging a bit, but I can highly recommend this resort as one of the best luxury resorts in Kerala!
If you are flying in and out of Kerala you are very likely to either arrive in Kochi or leave from Kochi. The Grand Hyatt then is a great choice for a luxurious start and/or end of your trip to Kerala .
Click here for rates and details of the Grand Hyatt Kochi Bolgatty
7. The Raviz Resort & Spa Ashtamudi – Kollam
If you are looking for a resort to relax at that is close to a city, beaches, and Kerala’s famous backwaters, then the Leela Ashtamudi is a great choice.
The resort is located just outside of Kollam, which for me was perfect: it’s a short taxi or rickshaw ride into the city, but far enough away to not feel as if you are staying in a busy Indian city.
The resort is set on the Ashtamudi Lake and offers rooms with great views, a beautiful pool, and a great spa. It’s a popular place to stay in Kerala for honeymooners and offers good value for money.
Tip: the first week of November the Ashtamudi Lake transforms into a venue for a traditional snake boat race – the President’s Trophy Boat Race, with the resort as a backdrop.
Click here for rates and details of the Raviz Resort & Spa Leela Ashtamudi
8. The Leela Kovalam
Are you planning a luxury trip to Kerala? Then definitely check out the Leela Kovalam .
This 5-star beach resort is located in a cute coastal town with a very laid-back feel. The resort has a beautiful infinity pool and a great sky bar.
Tip: if you are flying into or out of Trivandrum Airport and don’t feel like staying in Trivandrum, this is a good high-end hotel option. It’s located only about a 30 minutes drive from the airport.
Click here for rates and details of the Leela Kovalam
Homestays in Kerala – An Alternative to Hotels in Kerala
In all honesty, I wish I knew more about homestays in Kerala.
One of the reasons why I was looking forward to traveling to Kerala was because I had heard great things about Kerala’s sustainable tourism efforts.
And as much as I enjoyed staying at a range of Kerala’s luxury hotels, most were either owned by rich Indian families or part of international chains, which makes me wonder how much money actually ends up with the local community.
I was hoping for that same homestay experience in Kerala. Unfortunately, the few homestays I came to know in Kerala all seemed to be owned by much wealthier Indians and felt more like B&Bs or boutique hotels than the homestay experience I was hoping for.
That being said, I only saw a few homestays in Kerala, so there might be different options.
And even though the ones I visited were different from what I hoped, the B&B or boutique hotel experience is still a great one. And your money is more likely to end up staying in the community than if you choose to stay in an international hotel.
In short, I would definitely recommend trying a homestay in Kerala. I would choose smaller places and read reviews from other travelers to see if it’s the type of homestay you would enjoy.
Booking.com offers a good range of homestays with reviews. The Kerala tourism board offers a list of homestays in Kerala here .

Thanks Sanne for this excellent write up on staying in Kerala. I can totally relate to this as my family and I recently did some village tourism in Kerala. Especially in this new age where workations are being popular. It is so relaxing to be staying in a village in Kerala, being able to walk near paddy fields, to swim in waterfalls and local rivers. I recently traveled from Australia and stayed with my family of four at Kerala Village Heritage Homestay. We had such a nice experience there seeing Vilangad Waterfalls and also taking a drive to Urithooki mala to see the western ghats. Highly recommend this place for those on a workation or visiting Kerala to see its villages.

Luxury Kerala 10 Days Holidays
A Heaven Called "Kerala"
Bout India is a young dynamic travel company that specializes in personal planned trips to India. We recently used them based on recommendations from friends for our three week trip in north west India and we were not disappointed. The pre- trip planning through emails was convenient and they were very prompt in their responses. They were able to adapt and change plans as we continued to shape our trip. They made recommendations so our trip would be smooth and hassle free. All the domestic flights we flew were booked ahead of time and they took care of any changes in the flight schedules due to changes by the airlines. We were confident that when we arrived in India, our trip including hotels, guides, drivers and flights would be set up for us. While in India, we were in constant touch with the company and felt that they were making sure that our trip went according to plan. Everything was excellent and we had a fantastic trip!

A Weekend in A Luxury Houseboat and A Backwater Resort of Kerala (From Delhi with flights)
6 Night / 7 Day Kerala Tour Package
I booked for this “small group tour” 4 or 5 days before its starting date. In 24 hours, my booking was confirmed. On my first day of the tour, it was revealed that because no one else has signed up for these days, I was the only member of the tour, the driver will be my mate for the entire trip. I called the driver a driver, not a guide, because you would expect storytelling, experience sharing, maybe some form of entertainment by the guide. But he speaks rather basic English, with heavy accent. Our conversation’s limited almost exclusively to driving and eating arrangements. A few times we went through phone calls with a friend of his who speaks decent English. The driver made stops at friends’ herbal medicine garden, antique shop, Jeep safari, ... etc. The friends are usually friendly and respectful, so as long as you feel comfortable haggling, you will likely enjoyed the experience. A few things about the four hotels I spent nights at. Only one of them had a working WiFi that I could use. One of them had water turning cold a few minutes into a shower, and occasional power outages. But otherwise they are good hotels. Most of places listed on the itinerary require separate entrance tickets. So be prepared. Overall, the experience has been interesting for me. I learned quite a bit about the places, the local people, the tourism industry. If you consider yourself somewhat adventurous, and have a little flexibility with budget, this could be a good experience.
