Crown Princess Itineraries

Crown princess review, review of crown princess.

The 2006-built Crown Princess is the 7th Grand-class Princess Cruises ship, together with Caribbean , Diamond , Golden (Pacific Adventure) , Grand ,  Emerald , Ruby , Star (Pacific Encounter) and Sapphire .

The vessel (IMO number 9293399) is currently Bermuda- flagged (MMSI 310500000) and registered in Hamilton .

History - construction and ownership

Princess Cruises is a USA-based passenger shipping company headquartered in Beverly Hills CA. A former subsidiary of P&O Princess Cruises (1977-founded), in 2003, the company merged with Carnival Corporation - the world's largest cruise shipowner. Among Princess Cruise Lines Ltd's assets is the Caribbean private island resort Princess Cays (on Bahamas Eleuthera Island's southern end), located approx 80 km (50 mi) from Nassau .

Crown Princess cruise ship

The 3100-passenger ship Crown Princess aims to showcase everything which has come to define the cruise line. This is quintessential Princess with marquee facilities: Movies Under the Stars, a poolside big-screen theater represented on Caribbean Princess cruise ship (and since nicked by just about everyone in the sphere); the bustling, 3-deck Piazza, a combination bakery, Internet cafe, wine/sushi/tapas bar and performance facility; the Sanctuary which is only for adults, a mostly shaded top-vessel retreat with thick, plush loungers, massage cabanas and a spa menu; and Princess' signature duo of specialty dining venues, the Crown Grill (steaks, chops and seafood) and Sabatini's (Italian multi-course repast).

Decks and Cabins

Most Crown Princess staterooms (1531 total, in 33 grades) are 170-ft2 balcony cabins (677). Almost 80% of the ship's outside accommodations have private step-out balconies. Wheelchair-accessible cabins are 31. The largest accommodations are the Balcony Suites (410 ft2 / 38 m2, with terrace sized 180 ft2 / 17 m2).

The boat has 18 decks , of which 15 are passenger-accessible and 9 with cabins.

Shipboard dining options - Food and Drinks

Crown Princess features three dining rooms, all offering tasteful, Caribbean-themed menu. Botticelli is for fixed-seating dining, while Michaelangelo and Da Vinci are for passengers who have chosen "Anytime Dining". Reservations are available but are not required. Da Vinci also welcomes guests for waiter-service breakfast and lunch. Rotating menu options include soups, appetizers, mains and desserts. There are also signature pasta and choices like Caesar salad and salmon. The healthy Lotus Spa selections are low in sodium and fat. Cafe Caribe and Horizon Court look identical and are open all day long. The Horizon section serves as a lido buffet restaurant and features breakfast buffets. Lunch choices may include unusual dishes like peanut butter sandwiches and fried banana.

Follows the complete list of Crown Princess restaurants and food bars.

Crown Princess refurbishment 2018 review

The ship's last drydock was in 2022 (conducted at Vigor Shipyard in Portland OR ). The drydocking project included hull cleaning and coating/repainting, below-waterline hull works (steel, stabilizers, thrusters), plus minor hotel updates.

The ship's 2018 drydock (10-day project, March 24 - April 3) was at Grand Bahama Shipyard (in  Freeport Bahamas ). Following the refurbishment, the liner now offers the following new and enhanced amenities:

  • 4 top-deck dining venues were renovated, enhanced and renamed (Salty Dog Grill, Slice, Coffee and Cones, The Mix).
  • The Salty Dog Grill (former Trident Grill) offers Princess burgers (with 100% all-beef meat and onboard baked buns) and Street Tacos (with roasted sweet potato-green chile or grilled chipotle-lime chicken.
  • Slice (former Prego Pizzeria) offers Neapolitan-style pizzas.
  • Coffee and Cones (former Sundaes Ice Cream Bar) offers complimentary ice cream in cones, gourmet ice-cream sandwiches, fresh-brewed specialty coffee (by the company's new "New Grounds Crafted Coffee" program).
  • Sabatini's restaurant was renamed to "Sabatini's Trattoria".
  • Sun Deck's LED screen (at the outdoor theatre) was replaced with a bigger one.

Crown Princess Review: A Family-Friendly Ship

Crown Princess cruise ship in Vancouver

The Crown Princess cruise ship, launched in 2006, offers itineraries to Alaska, Europe, Hawaii, and Australia. While she isn’t the oldest ship at 17 years old, she requires a refresh. However, she offers diverse journeys for those on a budget.

In this Crown Princess review, discover the vessel’s public spaces, entertainment, overall feel, and what I thought of the service.

The Crown was the fifth vessel launched in the Grand class, owned by the Princess Line. She’s a mid-sized ship amongst the Royal, Grand, and Coral-class vessels with a passenger capacity of 3,000+ and a popular choice with those loyal to Princess.

During my cruise, I sailed solo in an aft balcony stateroom, paying a single supplement. It was my first solo cruise, and I was surprised that Princess assigned me an aft stateroom.

Crown Princess First Impressions

The ocean medallion, complimentary dining options, other dining options, bars and lounges, pools and hot tubs, crown princess staterooms, self-serve laundry, fitness and spa, entertainment, smoking areas, wi-fi and internet café.

The Crown Princess features a traditional décor similar to other vessels in the Princess Cruises fleet. Public spaces have an abundance of wood and muted hues.

Its Piazza or atrium spans several decks, often the center stage for dance parties, live music, and onboard events such as bean bag toss and giant Jenga. It’s a great spot to enjoy a latte from the International Cafe.

I was happy they had the champagne waterfall event, which Princess had canceled during the pandemic.

Crown Princess Piazza

The Promenade deck circumnavigates the ship, a favorite amongst those who like to walk laps and prefer a sheltered alternative to the Lido area.

Although refreshed in 2018, the vessel doesn’t have the modern look of the  Discovery Princess cruise ship. However, you can still enjoy the classics of ‘Movies under the Stars’ and gain access to your stateroom using the Ocean Medallion.

During my voyage, there was obvious signs that the vessel needed some TLC. A leaky ceiling in the buffet, peeling paint, and I had two drawers in my staterooms that were stuck closed. Although, none of these things affected my experience.

If it’s your first cruise, the Medallion, a wearable disk device, links to your smartphone and offers features unique to Princess Cruises. The Ocean Medallion replaces the traditional cruise card and has many ways to wear it.

Opening your stateroom door might be the most loved feature, but it does much more. Although I cruised alone this time, the app allows you to track members of your traveling party, even if they’re in another stateroom.

Medallion cabin door panel

You can order drinks and food (although there’s now a one-time fee), make dining reservations, and view the daily activities. Also, you can check your cruise account.

You can opt-in to ‘Princess Prizes’ for a chance to win a cruise, onboard credit, specialty dining, and more. Guests with the Princess Premier package are already included. Other passengers can sign up on their stateroom panel door.

On my cruise, the fee was USD 10 per day, allowing me to win a prize each time I unlocked my stateroom door on a sea day. My previous two cruises charged USD 20 a day, and the price may vary depending on the number of sea days. For this cruise, I had one sea day.

The Crown Princess has three main dining rooms to feed the 3,000 guests, all named after famous painters. You’ll find the Michelangelo Restaurant at the aft on deck 5 (Plaza). One deck up, the Da Vinci dining room sits mid-ship, and the Botticelli is at the aft.

Michelangelo main dining room

Due to the location of Da Vinci, it has fewer windows and can only be accessed from one side, mid-ship.

Since the galley lies between the two restaurants on decks 5 and 6, you can’t walk between these dining venues. It’s a nuisance to keep walking up and down a deck to access other areas.

You can enjoy complimentary meals in these venues, make reservations using the app, or show up for dinner.

Breakfast was served between 7:30 am and 9:30 am, and lunch from 12 to 1:30 pm at Botticelli. Da Vinci hosted complimentary afternoon tea with finger sandwiches, pastries, and scones.

It was nice to see the Botticelli Dining Room open for lunch on embarkation day, along with the Horizon Court Buffet.

All three main dining rooms served dinner from 5 pm to 9 pm. Although these venues have slightly different decor, they serve the same food. I have a separate article that covers my  Crown Princess dining experience .

If you prefer to “dine my way,” you’ll have a choice of Da Vinci or Michaelangelo. Those with the same dining time eat at Botticelli. However, since my cruise sailed at 50% capacity, guests could show up at any venue without a reservation.

Horizon Court Buffet

Alternatively, you can choose the Horizon Court buffet restaurant on deck 15 (Lido). For early birds, breakfast begins at 5:30 am and flows into lunch at 11:30 am.

Due to the ship sailing at a low capacity, the picture above shows the size of the buffet that opened on my sailing.

Other complimentary bites include the Slice Pizzeria, Salty Dog Grill, ice cream, and selected items at the International Cafe. USA Today rated Princess Cruises as having the best pizza at sea. After your voyage, you can replicate the recipe at home.

If you choose to forego the main dining room, you can pay a cover charge to eat at one of the specialty restaurants. The Crown Grill offers juicy steaks at a reasonable price. It’s the perfect place to celebrate a special occasion. Alternatively, you can enjoy Italian food at Sabatini’s.

Sabatini's specialty restaurant

The Salty Dog Gastropub and Vines offers a three-course casual meal for a fixed price of USD 14.99. And, of course, you can also order room service.

On Princess Alaska cruises , the Crown offers a pop-up venue in the buffet called the ‘Crab Shack.’ For a nominal fee, you can don a plastic bib and enjoy seafood choices such as snow crab, king crab, prawns, clams, and mussels.

The Crown Princess cruise ship offers a variety of bars and lounges to suit different moods. You’ll find around ten distinct venues on board. The Wheelhouse Bar is nautical-themed and serves a unique “Spinnaker” cocktail.

It offered an exclusive ‘beer tasting’ event, which cost USD 40. It included a welcome drink and three Alaskan beers with a variety of snacks.

Crooners Bar and Lounge on the Promenade deck is known for its martinis; try the “Classic Martini” for a timeless choice. Although my voyage sailed half full, this proved to be a popular venue onboard.

Crooners Bar

Club Fusion combines dancing and drinks; its signature is the “Fusion Fizz,” a blend of champagne and fruit juices.

Explorers Lounge offers trivia nights and serves a wide range of international beers. Vines Bar specializes in wine and offers excellent tapas pairings. The signature here is a robust “Cabernet Sauvignon.”

Skywalkers Nightclub is your go-to for late-night dancing; their “Cosmic Cosmo” is a must-try.

You’ll find the Skywalker’s Nightclub on deck 18 aft. It was a great location, four floors above guest staterooms. With late-night music from 11:30 pm onwards, the noise was kept away from sleeping guests. To reach the nightclub, you must take the aft elevator.

The Outrigger Bar offers stunning sea views and specializes in tropical cocktails like the “Mai Tai.” The Adagio Bar provides a more subdued atmosphere, hosting singles get-togethers and other casual meet and greet.

You’ll find five swimming pools and seven hot tubs on the Crown. The pools are heated and guests used them during a cold sea day in October. Due to the ship’s age, no water slides or kids’ water parks exist.

Calypso Reef and Pool

Deck 15, or the Lido deck, features the two main pools: Neptune’s and Calypso’s Reef and Pools.

You can also grab a lounge chair and enjoy Movies under the Stars on sea days. With a pizzeria, bar, Salty Dog Grill, and ice cream nearby, you won’t have to give up your lounger when hungry.

The giant outdoor screen showed recent movies and a great selection of concerts. Pity, our weather wasn’t good to sit outside to enjoy. I briefly sat outside on a sunny afternoon in Victoria, British Columbia.

Youths and teenagers have their own space off deck 17. Here, you’ll find a hot tub and a small circular pool that overlooks the Terrace Pool below.

You’ll find the small Terrace Pool one deck down at the aft. Adults can enjoy an exclusive pool and two hot tubs as part of the Lotus Spa. While you access it inside the spa, the pool is actually outdoors.

Crown Princess Terrace Pool

If you prefer a quieter space, you can pay a fee to use the sanctuary at the bow on deck 17. It features the usual padded loungers, fluffy towels, and pampering service. This adult-only area also had two cabanas offering massage treatments.

The sanctuary is a popular space to enjoy scenic itineraries such at  Alaska’s Glacier Bay.

Cruise guests can select from inside cabins at 162 sq. feet to their largest suite measuring 357 sq. feet. You won’t find any colossal suites or those with multiple bedrooms, although you can book a family suite that combines a mini-suite with an interior stateroom.

For my cruise, I chose a balcony guarantee. I was surprised to be assigned an aft balcony cabin on deck 11 (Baja) with a 10 ft. long deck (category B4). While most solo cruisers might opt for a smaller inside, I was thrilled to enjoy the extra space of a larger stateroom to myself.

My Crown Princess balcony cabin

While an aft cabin requires more walking, it ensures a quieter location with less foot traffic in the hallway. I enjoyed the wake views from my huge balcony and found the location peaceful. You can read my full  aft cabin review.

Apart from deck 15, you can find a self-serve laundry room on each deck with staterooms. On the Crown Princess, you can locate the laundry room near the aft on each deck, except deck 2, where it’s near the bow.

The laundry rooms have washers, dryers, an iron and ironing board. You can purchase laundry soap and fabric softeners using your Medallion. The laundry room didn’t have any set hours.

🛳️ Haven’t booked your Crown Princess cruise yet?

Find your perfect cruise with Cruise Direct . It offers mini-cruises to extended itineraries on the Crown.

While I was on a mini-cruise and didn’t use the area, it’s a great feature on lengthened itineraries. Since Princess Cruise Lines offers world cruises, not having to pay a hefty fee for laundry is a nice bonus.

Alternatively, you can opt for paid laundry, which includes same-day or next-day service. Laundry costs were as follows:

  • Evening dresses – USD 11.50
  • 2-Piece Suit – USD 10
  • Pants – USD 5.00
  • Shorts – USD 4.50
  • Shirts/blouses – USD 4.50
  • Underwear or socks – USD 2

Note that same-day laundry incurs an additional 50% express service fee.

The Lotus Spa and Fitness Center is on Deck 16. You can visit the spa from 7:30 am to 9:30 pm. The fitness center opened late at 7 am, but guests could work out until 10 pm.

The spa offers a variety of treatments for every budget. You’ll find massages, facials, and acupuncture on the menu. A hair and beauty salon is also available if you want to put your hair up on formal nights.

Heated tile loungers in the spa's thermal suite

Unique to the spa is the thermal suite, located one deck down. The thermal suite offers a serene atmosphere for relaxation. It features aromatic steam rooms and heated loungers, which I’ve enjoyed on Alaska itineraries.

Since this area is in an interior location, the thermal suite does not have windows to allow for outside views. For my mini-cruise, guests could purchase a thermal suite pass for USD 79.99 (reg. USD 99.99) or a one-day pass for USD 49.99. The pass sells for USD 149.99 for a 7-day itinerary.

One of the features I enjoy on older vessels is the complimentary saunas and steam rooms. The Crown has these, allowing you to forego the thermal suite pricing.

The Lotus Spa also has a small outdoor pool accessed from the spa area. This adult-only pool makes a quiet alternative to the Neptune Pool when the ship is at capacity.

For those into fitness, there’s a gym with modern equipment. Located at the bow, you can enjoy ocean views and forget you’re at the gym. You can attend fitness classes like yoga, Pilates, or TRX Suspension training.

Crown Princess' Fitness Center

You’ll find the Center Court for basketball and pickleball outside the fitness area on deck 19 aft. Here, you’ll also find the jogging track and Princess Links, a nine-hole mini golf course.

You can enjoy entertainment at several venues, such as the Princess Theater, Explorer’s Lounge, and Club Fusion. You’ll find all these venues on deck 7.

Club Fusion hosted a shopping show, ballroom dance classes, karaoke, and live music. The other locations offered a mix of game shows, production numbers, and comedians.

I especially enjoyed the ‘Sweet Soul Music’ featured on my first evening and the ‘Disco, Blame it on the Boogie’ on the last night.

Dancers from the Disco production show

The singers in the production shows had great voices, and I enjoyed the selection of song choices.

You’ll find the Speakeasy Cigar Lounge on deck 6 by the Gatsby’s Casino for those who smoke. There is a smoking area inside the casino, too. Also:

  • Outside Club Fusion on the starboard side.
  • The Tradewinds Bar, port side.
  • Outside Sabatini’s.

The kids’ clubs are located on deck 17. For my cruise, there were only 1600 guests, of which 88 were children.

The Treehouse catered to ages 3 to 7, with toys, arts and crafts, video games, and a small jungle gym. 8- to 12-year-olds can register at The Lodge. It had foosball, air hockey, skee-ball, ping pong, and a communal space to hang out with kids of a similar age.

Skee-ball in The Lodge Kids' Club

The Beach House was reserved for teenagers from 13 to 17 years. The older kids could design graffiti t-shirts, have a dance competition, or play video games.

The kids’ club offered port day programming for three hours. Events included arts and crafts, card games, video games, and movies.

Located on deck 5, the internet café has computers guests can use 24 hours a day. I purchased Wi-Fi for my entire journey for USD 14.99 per day. You can also buy a one-day pass for USD 19.99.

There were options for four devices should you be traveling with family. I found the Wi-Fi met my needs and only found it lagged when I sometimes used Skype.

Wi-Fi speed test

I completed a speed test, which showed my download speed at 1.99 Mbps, using SpaceX Starlink satellite.

Crown Princess Review Final Thoughts

The Crown Princess provides an excellent choice for those on a budget and not looking for all the bells and whistles of modern-day mega-vessels. The ability to do self-service laundry makes Princess ships more enticing on longer itineraries.

I found the deck plan odd. Some areas are hard to find, and the galley blocking the ability to walk across decks 5 and 6 was a nuisance.

However, I felt the entertainment onboard was fantastic, and so was the cruise director, Gary Golding.

While I only did a mini-cruise, it was a great choice to upgrade my loyalty status. In fact, I met several guests who booked the short itinerary to reach Platinum or Elite.

washers and dryers - self-service - available on most ships / decks  $3 per wash, $3 per dry - free irons and ironing boards provided in the laundry rooms

Thrak

We do our own. We've only sailed as Elite one time so far and didn't have a good experience with the free laundry.  The cleaning service failed to remove the spot on the dress and the regular laundry returned the wrong clothing.

trvlwrld

We are elite and get free laundry........but definitely don’t use it for anything that you really like....it comes back (not necessarily to you) 2 sizes smaller,  spots not removed, and sometimes you even get extra clothes 🥴

Most of my cruises are seven night, and I do not do any laundry (or have it done).  When I do back-to-back, I run one load in the self-service machines and that is enough.  My wife does some hand-washables in the bathroom sink.

Well, I have had some pressing done, when I dressed up for Formal nights.  Cost is comparable to my dry cleaner at home.

Just a note, really never had an issue with the ship's laundry. Don't feel it's an issue, but I would not send expensive delicate items. Also note irons are free in every laundry room. There is a laundry room on every passenger deck of the Crown except on the Lido deck.

caribill

If you are sending out the laundry for Princess to do it, please know that it might take several days to be returned.

As the price form referenced in an above post shows, you can mark it "presto" and pay 50% more to have it back the same day if you turn it in by 9 AM.

Our understanding is that passengers that pay for laundry receive it back the next day or presto depending on which box is checked. Think next day procedure requires you to provide laundry to your cabin steward in the morning of day one to receive it back in the evening of day two. I think this is what you refer to as several days.

You are correct.

I let the elite laundry return time muddle my mind.

Ahhh... I let the Talisker, the 24k Gold Margarita, and the Chairman of the Board take care of that. 😜

We've used Elite laundry many times (20+ cruises, many long ones). Never lost anything, smaller clothes returned, missed spots, "new" holes, someone else's laundry returned.

You just never know. Maybe we're just lucky    altho' DH hasn't won the lottery yet.

For sure separate cleaning from washing loads. Princess only uses one temp on washing loads. Once had 2 wool sweaters come back half their size. Princess did reimburse me for them

YouTube cruise vloggers went on Crown Princess during their month of cruising in February 2020.

As part of their video they posted just yesterday, they showed buying tokens (with medallion) and using the washer.

It is great to see the Crown in the videos.  They are Diamond (top level on Carnival) and this is their first Princess Cruise.

Crown Princess vs Grand Princess

Princess Cruises Crown Princess cruise ship

The Princess Cruises Crown Princess was built in 2006. It was renovated in 2018. It's 8 years newer than the Grand Princess , which was built in 1998 and renovated in 2019. Grand Princess was the largest and most expansive ship ever to be constructed when it debuted in 1998.

Comparison Overview

  • Bars and Drinks

Ship features and activities, cruise costs, onboard costs.

The Crown Princess is considered a medium size ship. Coming in at 952 feet long and 159 feet wide, it's roughly the length of 2.6 football fields, as wide as 3 tractor-trailers and the same height as a 19-story building. Compared to the Princess Cruises Grand Princess, the Crown Princess is 6% larger in terms of overall tons.

Princess Cruises Crown Princess holds 18% more passengers than the Grand Princess based on double occupancy (two people per room). When you look at the "Space Ratio," or the total tonnage of a ship compared to the number of passengers, the Crown Princess has less space per person compared to the Grand Princess.

Sabatinis on the Princess Cruises Crown Princess

Food is a big part of any cruise, and the ship you choose can make a huge difference in your food experience.

The Crown Princess has 18 different dining options like Sabatini's , International Cafe , and Coffee and Cones . Of those options, 10 are complementary, or included with your cruise fare. The other 5 options have an additional fee.

The Grand Princess has 3 fewer dining venues. Some of its popular venues are Slice , Coffee and Cones , and Alfredo's Pizzeria . 11 of these restaurants are complementary and the other 3 have an additional fee.

If you like having a variety of places to eat, the Crown Princess might be a better choice. It has 20% more dining options than the Grand Princess.

Both ships have a similar number of paid versus included dining options.

Restaurants on Princess Cruises Crown Princess & Grand Princess

In terms of drinks and cocktails, you have a variety of choices. Both ships serve the Coca-cola family of products. That means Coke, Diet Coke, Sprite and Barqs Root Beer, although the selection can vary by ship.

There are also plenty of bars available on these ships. Alcohol is not included in the base price of this cruise ship. To see if you would save money with a drink package, try our Drink Package Calculator.

The main pool on the Crown Princess

Nothing beats relaxing by a pool with a nice drink in hand as you feel the fresh sea breeze pass by you. The problem is that with thousands of people on a ship, there's not always room. If you want to spend all day for 7 days in a pool, a cruise isn't for you. You would have a much better bet choosing a resort with a huge pool complex. That being said, a quick dip in the pool can be nice on a hot day.

The Princess Cruises Crown Princess has a total of 4 pools and 6 hot tubs. Tired of loud kids and splashing? 2 of the pools and 2 of the hot tubs are adults only.

Princess Cruises Grand Princess has more pools than the Crown Princess and more hot tubs. There are more exclusive pools and hot tubs on the Grand Princess. If you don't mind paying for exclusive access to areas in order to have less crowds, this might be a better choice.

Both ships have lots of activities to keep you busy throughout your cruise. Below you'll see a list of some of the major features on these ships. On the Crown Princess, 82% of the activities below are included in the cruise fare. On the Grand Princess, only 75% of the activities are included, meaning you might spend more money while on board.

Princess Cruises is a premium cruise line. Premium cruise lines typically offer upscale food, accommodations, and service. These typically cost about $150 - $400 per person per day.

Cruise pricing is dynamic and varies for each specific sailing based on factors such as departure point, ports of call, and time of year. Typically newer ships cost more, so a cruise on Princess Cruises Crown Princess will likely be more expensive than on Princess Cruises Grand Princess.

Another way to gauge the cost of a cruise is to consider how much you'll spend on board. Even though a lot is included in the base cruise fare, you may still spend money on things like spa treatments, specialty dining, drinks, and excursions. In addition, guests can also have to pay for things like gratuities and tips.

Typically guests can expect to spend about 25 - 40% of the cost of the cruise on onboard expenses. In other words, if the cruise fare is $1,000 per person, you might spend between $250 and $400 on extra expenses.

The table below will help you understand what you might spend onboard a Princess Cruises ship.

Princess Cruises offers two packages to bundle onboard expenses. The Princess Plus package includes daily gratuities, the basic beverage package, 2 fitness classes, 2 casual dining meals, and internet for $60 per day per guest. The Princess Premier package upgrades to the premiere beverage package, wifi for up to 4 devices per guest, two specialty dining meals, unlimited casual dining meals, unlimited fitness classes, and a photo package for $80 per guest per day.

The 8 best Hawaii cruises in 2024 and 2025

C ruising the Hawaiian Islands offers U.S. travelers an immersive South Pacific escape with all the comforts of home. In fact, the Aloha State is in many ways an ideal cruise destination. It has year-round sunny weather, four main islands featuring varied topographies — including sandy beaches, cascading waterfalls, volcanic mountains and vibrant green valleys — and a wide array of land- and water-based activities.

The main caveat? Hawaii cruise options are somewhat limited — just a fraction of what's available in the Caribbean — and many itineraries involve multiday crossings from the West Coast. Only one cruise line offers Hawaii itineraries throughout the year; most others visit during specific months or when repositioning ships in spring and fall.

For more cruise news, reviews and tips, sign up for TPG's cruise newsletter .

Looking for the Hawaiian Islands sailing that's right for you? Here's a look at the eight best Hawaii cruises for every type of traveler.

Norwegian Cruise Line's 7-night Inter-island Hawaii

For travelers who want more aloha time than the typical eight-hour port call allows, Norwegian Cruise Line has a solution. Its 2,186-passenger Pride of America lets vacationers sample four Hawaiian islands over seven days, with overnights in Maui and Kauai, plus port calls on both Hilo and Kona on the island of Hawaii. In total, this itinerary offers nearly 100 hours of shore time.

Pride of America sails round-trip from Honolulu every Saturday year-round. As a U.S.-flagged ship, it's the only large vessel permitted to sail this way. Not only do you skip the long Pacific crossing that most cruise ships do to reach Hawaii, but passports are not required for U.S. citizens, and you can tack on pre- or post-cruise stays on Oahu.

The overnights on Maui and Kauai also mean it's possible to try several of Hawaii's signature experiences that most port calls don't allow. Passengers can catch dusk or dawn from atop Maui's massive 10,023-foot dormant volcano with sunrise and sunset excursions to the Haleakala Crater. And with the ship in port all night on Kauai, guests who want to enjoy traditional Hawaiian cuisine, music and hula performances can book the Luau Kalamaku for a fun evening out.

Pride of America, which has been cruising Hawaii since 2005, doesn't have the onboard thrills (race track, virtual-reality gaming, waterslides) of Norwegian's newer ships , but that's okay because the islands, not the ship, are your main destination. Its American-themed decor celebrates U.S. cities in a vibrant, and at times, kitschy way, but a 2021 refurbishment left its cabins and public spaces feeling refreshed.

Many of Norwegian's specialty dining venues (which incur a surcharge) are on board, including Cagney's Steakhouse, Le Bistro (here, it's Jefferson's Bistro), Moderno Churrascaria and Teppanyaki.

Who should go: Anyone seeking a convenient way to island-hop — and see a lot of Hawaii — by making the most of the generous shore time with a combination of independent exploration and shore excursions. Most sailings attract couples ages 50 and older, although summer and holiday sailings have plenty of families on board.

UnCruise Adventures' 7-night Hawaiian Seascapes

Cruisers seeking a less traditional, more carefree Hawaii experience can have it from November to April aboard UnCruise Adventures ' 36-passenger Safari Explorer. The seven-night Hawaiian Seascapes itinerary, which begins either on Molokai or the island of Hawaii, is an unconventional one designed for those who enjoy going off the beaten path in an intimate and more authentic setting. U.S. passports aren't required to sail.

UnCruise visits four islands — Maui and Lanai plus Molokai and Hawaii — and focuses on not only their striking landscapes and underwater beauty but also the cultural traditions, cuisine and music of the Hawaiian people. On Molokai, where there's not a single traffic light and the lifestyle is slow-paced, passengers get a chance to "talk story" with locals and enjoy a pa'ina (feast) and evening jam session. Lanai activities range from snorkel, paddleboard and kayak excursions to off-road adventures exploring the privately owned island's dramatic sea cliffs, red rock formations and vast fields once filled with Dole pineapples.

Most UnCruise sailings are during Maui's humpback whale season, so sightings while cruising off the coast of Maui are possible. You might also catch glimpses of dolphins and sea turtles. A "Captain's Choice" day is a wild card determined by the weather, marine life in the area and other factors, while the final two days are spent exploring the Big Island of Hawaii — including a hike up Hualalai volcano and a skiff ride along the rugged coast.

Constructed in 1998, Safari Explorer was designed with adventure itineraries in mind (in summer the U.S.-flagged ship repositions to Alaska). Its size allows it to navigate areas larger ships can't reach, which in Hawaii means bays and coves ideal for snorkeling or watersports.

With such a small number of passengers aboard, guests get to know each other — and Safari Explorer's friendly and knowledgeable crew — quite well. Passengers come together over meals featuring locally sourced ingredients, and as all UnCruise fares include unlimited wines, spirits and microbrews, shipmates can raise a glass without worrying who's buying a round. It all lends itself to an exclusive yet utterly relaxed week of cruising.

Who should go: The ship's laid-back onboard vibe paired with its land- and water-based activities make the Hawaiian Seascapes itinerary ideal for active travelers seeking a nature-focused itinerary — although cruise fares (which start around $5,900 per person) are among the priciest for a Hawaii cruise.

Holland America's 17-night Circle Hawaii

Travelers who have more than two weeks to spare and who prefer to arrive in Hawaii via ship rather than an airplane can do so on Holland America 's 17-night Circle Hawaii itinerary. They'd better also love sea days because crossing the Pacific from San Diego or Vancouver to Honolulu and back requires 10 days.

That means passengers enjoy five or six days in Hawaii on Kauai, Oahu, Maui and the island of Hawaii. Some itineraries stay in select ports overnight. Cruises departing from San Diego also call on Ensenada, Mexico. With either departure port, passports will be required.

The itinerary is offered in 2024 and 2025 on the 2,650-passenger Koningsdam and 1,432-passenger Zaandam.

Travelers with more time on their hands can also visit Hawaii as part of longer Pacific island cruises with Holland America. Koningsdam will sail a 35-night Hawaii, Tahiti & Marquesas itinerary in 2025 that combines visits to four Hawaiian islands with calls on five islands in French Polynesia and Fanning Island, Kiribati (and 20 sea days).

Related: Holland America unveils epic cruise to Hawaii and Alaska for 2025

Zaandam will also sail 51- to 56-night Tales of the South Pacific itineraries that visit multiple islands in Hawaii and French Polynesia along with ports in the Cook Islands, American Samoa and Fiji.

Holland America is popular with cruisers ages 60 and older, many of them retired, who have time to enjoy longer itineraries on ships that offer good value with a focus on culinary and musical enjoyment. Two of Koningsdam's most popular venues are its live entertainment area with three venues — B.B. King's Blues Club (for Memphis-style rhythm and blues), Billboard Onboard (for chart-topping hits played by a live pianist) and Rolling Stone Rock Room (for a live band playing classic rock), and World Stage, a theater with a 270-degree screen used for both special BBC Earth in Concert and theatrical productions.

Onboard specialty dining options (at an added cost) include Pinnacle Grill for steaks and seafood, Tamarind for Pan-Asian cuisine and Rudi's Sel de Mer for French Brasserie specialties and seafood.

Who should go: Mature travelers who prefer not to fly and who enjoy a more traditional cruise experience. They should also love sea days as much (or even more so) than port exploration.

Princess Cruises' 15- or 16-night Hawaiian Islands

Princess Cruises is also a good option for longer sailings. The cruise line offers numerous round-trip itineraries to Hawaii from Los Angeles, San Francisco and San Diego in the fall and winter.

The majority of sailings are aboard the 3,080-passenger Crown Princess and Ruby Princess from San Francisco, and the 2,600-passenger Grand Princess and 3,080-passenger Emerald Princess from Los Angeles.

Ships are in port for nine to 11 hours in Hawaii (Hilo), Kauai and Maui and for 16 hours in Oahu. Itineraries include a stop in Ensenada, Mexico (so passports are required), plus nine or 10 sea days.

The ships feature many of Princess' popular dining venues, including Alfredo's Pizzeria (a sit-down venue serving personal-size pizzas), Crown Grill for steaks and Sabatini's Italian Trattoria. There's plenty of outdoor space for soaking up the sun — including an adults-only sun deck — and a dazzling Piazza for enjoying cocktails, gelato and pop-up street performers.

Fans of Princess' Movies Under the Stars poolside screenings (with free popcorn) and Discovery at SEA enrichment programming will have ample time to enjoy these perks on a Hawaii sailing.

Who should go: These sailings will appeal to couples or groups of friends who prefer to have a wide choice of sailing dates, can take the time to enjoy a leisurely Pacific crossing and appreciate Princess' focus on quality cuisine and a sun deck designed for relaxation rather than thrills.

Celebrity's 9- to 12-night Hawaii Cruise

Travelers seeking modern interior decor on a ship designed with couples in mind can visit Hawaii aboard Celebrity Cruises ' 2,852-passenger Celebrity Solstice or 2,918-passenger Celebrity Edge on itineraries ranging from nine to 13 nights — but only if the timing is right. That's because the line offers only two sailings per ship each year (in spring and fall) as the ships reposition between Alaska and destinations in the Pacific. The itineraries are one-way (Vancouver to Honolulu or vice versa) with passports required.

These cruises call on three ports on two islands: Honolulu (Oahu) and Hilo and Kona (Hawaii), with one or two overnights in port and 10 hours ashore on one-day visits. All include five days in a row at sea. Since the itineraries either begin or end in Honolulu, there's also a chance for some pre- or post-cruise exploration.

Sea days offer opportunities to enjoy the chic, grown-up ambience and amenities aboard these ships. Each vessel offers multiple complimentary and extra-fee specialty restaurants. Celebrity Solstice features Tuscan Grille for Italian specialties and steak and Murano for modern French cuisine, while Celebrity Edge offers the whimsical Le Petit Chef and the international Eden Restaurant.

Celebrity's signature Martini Bar and many other onboard watering holes keep the grown-up vibe going day and night. Choose cruise fares that include alcohol and Wi-Fi, or pay a lower rate and pay for your drinks as you go.

Who should go: The slightly shorter one-way sailings and the ships' contemporary ambience make these itineraries ideal for couples and groups of friends seeking a relaxing escape — especially Gen Xers in their 40s and 50s, who are Celebrity's target market.

Carnival's 14- or 15-night Hawaii from Los Angeles

If fun is your cruise mantra, the "Fun Ship" brand Carnival Cruise Line offers a handful of round-trip sailings to Hawaii from Los Angeles (Long Beach) aboard the 2,984-passenger Carnival Radiance. Like other roundtrips from the West Coast, these itineraries spend just five days in Hawaii, offering eight to 14 hours of shore time in ports on four islands: Maui, Kauai, Oahu and Hawaii. Along with enjoying eight sea days, guests will also call on Ensenada, Mexico, so passports are required.

Carnival Radiance first sailed under that name in 2021, but it's not a new ship. Before an epic makeover, it sailed for the cruise line as Carnival Victory. Ship features include many of Carnival's signature complimentary and extra-fee dining venues, including Guy's Burger Joint and Pig & Anchor Bar-B-Que Smokehouse, BlueIguana Cantina, Fahrenheit 555 Steakhouse and Bonsai Sushi Express.

Additional guest favorite destinations on board include the RedFrog Pub, Alchemy Bar and WaterWorks aquapark. Expect high-voltage theater shows from Playlist Productions at night and poolside interactive contests by day.

Who should go: Socially inclined cruisers who love Carnival's emphasis on onboard fun and can appreciate a colorful ship with a lively ambience and lots of day and evening activities.

Royal Caribbean's 9- to 13-night Hawaii Cruises

A megaship cruise experience to Hawaii is available, too — with pricing that's quite affordable. Royal Caribbean cruises there on two vessels in one of its newer classes of ships: the 4,180-passenger Quantum of the Seas and Ovation of the Seas.

All are one-way cruises just before or after the Alaska cruise season (so late April or early October) between Oahu and Vancouver (or vice versa). The ships call on two Hawaiian islands and spend four or five days in a row at sea. Passports are required since these itineraries begin or end in Vancouver.

Ovation of the Seas and Quantum of the Seas feature a mix of thrills for all ages. These include RipCord by iFly simulated sky diving, FlowRider simulated surfing, bumper car racing in the SeaPlex indoor activity complex and the North Star sightseeing capsule, which ascends 300 feet above the top deck for 360-degree views.

Both ships also offer 14 dining venues, including the innovative Wonderland, Jamie's Italian by Jamie Oliver and kid-favorite Dog House, as well as bar options that include Schooner Bar for by-request piano tunes, Boleros for mojitos and merengue and Bionic Bar for drinks poured by robotic bartenders. Entertainment includes live cover bands in the Music Hall and multimedia music and dance performances in Two70.

Who should go: Cruisers who love a big ship with a wide array of dining choices, all kinds of evening entertainment and plenty of exciting activities to pass the time on sea days. Quantum-class ships are great for families, but the sail dates might not work for those with school-age kids.

Viking's 16-night Hawaiian Islands Sojourn

For a guaranteed adults-only sailing in a relaxed, boutique-style setting, upscale cruise line Viking also offers round-trip Hawaii cruises from Los Angeles in late 2024 and early 2025 on its 930-passenger Viking Neptune.

What sets Viking apart from most of the other lines offering Hawaii cruises is that it includes a free shore excursion in every port. These include a highlights tour of Honolulu and Pearl Harbor on Oahu and a visit to a scenic waterfall and the Kilohana sugar plantation on Kauai. Additional excursions can be booked at an extra charge.

The 16-night Hawaiian Islands Sojourn sailings visit four islands — Hawaii (Hilo), Oahu, Kauai and Maui — and like other round-trip sailings from the West Coast include 10 sea days and a call on Ensenada, Mexico, so passports are required.

Viking Neptune will also do 32-night Grand Hawaii and Polynesia sailings round-trip from Los Angeles in late 2024 and early 2025 that visit four islands in Hawaii and four in French Polynesia.

The ship, which debuted in 2022, features sleek Scandinavian-inspired decor, a soothing spa with a complimentary thermal area, an aft infinity pool and hot tub, a panoramic Explorer's Lounge and five onboard restaurants. Specialty restaurant Manfredi's serves an extensive menu of Italian specialties, while The Chef's Table offers rotating five-course themed menus, including Asian, French and California-inspired.

In addition to the free shore excursions, pricing includes complimentary wine or beer with lunch and dinner, specialty dining at no extra charge, crew gratuities and transfers.

Who should go: Couples who prefer the quieter ambience of a ship that doesn't allow anyone under 18 onboard, doesn't have a casino and offers presentations by regional experts that enhance immersion into local culture. Viking cruisers are generally over age 55.
