PASADENA – Tadej Pogacar, the 20-year-old donning the yellow jersey, was the last rider introduced as he made his way to the starting line Saturday in the final stage of the Amgen Tour of California. He gave a quick smile and handshake to Sergio Higuita, over whom he had a 16-second lead after beating Higuita the day before in a thrilling sprint up Mount Baldy.

Then, Pogacar faced forward and focused, as the countdown to the seventh and final stage began. Winning this tour was his main goal for the year, and the Slovenian made history along the way, becoming the youngest rider to win the Tour of California as well as any world tour race.

“I was well prepared,” said Pogacar, who pulled off a masterful tactical win in Stage 6, pouncing when Higuita took a bad line on the final turn.

Pogacar, as siblings do, started cycling because his brother did. After his brother quit, Pogacar kept going, kept pursuing his dream.

And at the ripe age of 20 – too young to pop champagne to celebrate – the Slovenian has already advanced up the echelons of the cycling world, earlier than even he expected.

“I surprised myself a bit that I took the overall win,” Pogacar said.

Pogacar finished 16 seconds ahead of Higuita. Kasper Asgreen, who was 17 seconds behind, took third. It is Pogocar’s second career win – his first came earlier this year in Portugal.

Cees Bol won Stage 7, coming out in front after a dead sprint to the line, just in front of Peter Sagan and Jasper Philpsen, who finished second and third, respectively. It is the second career win for the 23-year-old from the Netherlands, who claimed his first victory earlier this year.

Asgreen, who began the day in third and 20 seconds behind Pogacar, made a dash to take the lead with just over 10 miles remaining and briefly also had the overall lead. According to Asgreen, there weren’t many opportunities to make a move, and this was his chance. But the peloton soon caught up to the race leaders, leading to the ending sprint and allowing Pogacar to finish off the overall win.

Pogacar admitted to feeling nervous when Asgreen made his way to the front, but he had trust in his UAE Arab Emirates teammates.

“I knew my team is good and can count on them,” Pogacar said. “They brought Agreen back and I was calm.”

Asgreen, who held on to the green jersey as the race’s best sprinter, is the oldest of the top three finishers at 24 years old. Higuita, the second place finisher, is 21.

The youth shining was the main point that Kristin Klein, president of the Amgen Tour of California, took from the tour. Klein called the race’s 14th year the “best edition yet.”

“We had the strongest field for both the men and the women. We continue to have a platform that is a launching pad for all of the young talent,” she said. “It’s phenomenal to see it and we’re proud that we continue to be a launching pad for all of the riders.”

In addition to turning young cyclists such as Pogacar, Higuita and Asgreen into cycling’s next stars, Klein said that the tour’s goal is to continue to provide riders with a path to international success.

Asgreen added that the result are less indicative of the course that organizers plotted and more about a youth movement that has swept across cycling. Indeed, 30-year-old Tejay van Garderen, who held the lead from Stage 2 until Friday, faltered on Mount Baldy. And 33-year-old Mark Cavendish, a fan favorite, barely made the time cut on Friday and did not finish on Saturday.

“There’s just a really good young generation coming out now,” Asgreen said. “There’s been a lot of big results from young riders in the past month.”

Italy’s Elisa Balsamo won Stage 3 of the women’s race, which also ended in a dead sprint after Kathrin Hammes’ breakaway attempt was caught in the final kilometer.

Anna van der Breggen claimed the women’s yellow jersey, finishing with the pack and 29 seconds ahead of teammate Katie Hall. She led from start to finish, even easing up in Stage 2 on Friday to allow Hall to win at Mount Baldy.

Stage 3 wasn’t as comfortable as van der Breggen would have liked, however. Her team, Boels Dolmans Cycling, was down to three riders by the end of the race. But she and Hall fended off numerous early attacks and cut breakaway attempts short. In the end, most of the field opted to turn the final meters in a sprint, allowing van der Breggen to maintain her lead.

The riders started at the Westfield Valencia Town Center in Santa Clarita, then wound through the San Gabriel Mountains before finishing in Pasadena, 78 miles in all. The finish line was sprawled across a parking lot adjacent to the historic Rose Bowl. The seven-stage event began Sunday in Sacramento, coming to Southern California on Friday with a 79-mile route from Ontario to Mount Baldy.

14 YEARS OF GOLDEN MOMENTS: A LOOK BACK AT THE TOUR OF CALIFORNIA

Taking a sentimental look back at the amgen tour of california.

results of the tour of california

The statement announcing the cancellation of the Tour of California from promoters Anschutz Entertainment Group, while unfortunate, was not terribly surprising. In fact, for some veteran race watchers, it was long overdue. Despite having no shortage of picturesque and historical race venues throughout the state, this was California, after all. And no matter how bright the sheen of the Golden State, regulation and the threat to traffic flow often conspire to the detriment of any outdoor activity that involves the public highways and byways. We are a content and happy lot here, but block off a few roads and make it hard to get to the mall and we see red!

As many relationship-ending notices read, it began with plenty of good things to say about all the players involved and the good times had. But then came the crux of the missive—after 14 years of some dramatic racing, the race had “become more challenging each year to mount the race.” As such, for the year 2020, the Golden State would not be hosting some of the world’s best teams and riders.

SUN, SHOPPING AND EPO

Despite the state’s renown for sunny weather, the race was initially held in February where some frightfully cold and wet stages would rival the misery of Europe’s worst weather. Soon enough, the race was moved to May where it would anchor itself as a proper run-up to the Tour de France. For the top riders, like Tom Boonen and Peter Sagan, a two-week stay in California could not only ensure good training for July but also countless shopping opportunities!

results of the tour of california

Although there were other American races that qualified as a points-collecting stop on the UCI calendar, the Tour of California was the most celebrated, eventually earning WorldTour status. However, even before the first stage started, the race had attained a level of notoriety, owing to the title sponsor Amgen. Remember, these were the days when all things Lance Armstrong and doping still permeated cycling headlines, and the fact that Amgen was a major producer of erythropoietin (aka EPO), which everyone knew was a successful doping agent for athletes as it was a red-blood-cell booster for cancer patients.

While there were some venues that truly brought out the best in the geography, racers and spectators alike (the time trial in Solvang was one of the best!), there were others that took the riders and team cars through truly desolate, Podunk towns. The cost to the towns was also substantial and not always a good investment. I once asked a Santa Rosa city manager what the comparison between the pro race and Levi’s GranFondo was, and she was adamant that there was none. “The Tour gets lots of publicity, but the pro riders come to town, ride and leave. With the GranFondo, we get families that come to town, shop and eat out; the Gran Fondo is much better for the city.”

Now two years on without the race, we thought to look back at some great moments before they were forgotten about entirely. It’s unfortunate that despite the popularity of cycling in America, the rise and demise of the Amgen Tour of California likely marks the last time our shores will host a bike race of such grand proportions. But, it never hurts to keep our fingers crossed!

The Amgen Tour of California route has been confirmed for 2019, with seven stages starting in Sacramento on Sunday, May 12, and finishing in Pasadena on Saturday, May 28.

Run at the same time as the Giro d'Italia , the first American race to be awarded UCI WorldTour status has historically attracted a variety of riders, with a combination of stages tailored to the sprinters, a time trial and a summit finish high in the mountains.

The 2019 edition will run in seven stages over seven days, over a 1251km course.

This year will include 14 sprints and 25 King of the Mountain climbs, the most in the race’s history.

The Tour of California Women’s Race will be run over three stages alongside the men’s, from May 16-18.

Paris-Roubaix 2024: How to Watch a UCI World Tour Cycling Livestream for Free

The world's best riders take on the Queen of the Classics.

results of the tour of california

The UCI World Tour heads to the rugged roads of northern France this weekend for the 2024 edition of the Paris-Roubaix.

Widely regarded as the toughest one-day race on the road cycling calendar, Paris-Roubaix features some of the most grueling cobblestone stretches on any of the Spring Classics. The peloton's ordeal eventually concludes after almost 160 miles in the iconic velodrome in Roubaix.

Last year's event saw Mathieu van der Poel (Alpecin-Deceuninck) claim victory in the men's race while Alison Jackson (EF Education-Cannondale) was the 2023 women's race winner.

Below, we'll outline the best  live TV streaming services  to use to watch the Paris-Roubaix live wherever you are in the world.

Max Walscheid of Germany and Team Cofidis riding along a cobbled stretch, while spectators behind a barrier with flags cheer on from the sides at the 2023 Max Walscheid of Germany and Team Cofidis race.

The 256.6km one-day race is known as "The Hell of the North," and these cobblestones might give you a clue as to why.

Paris-Roubaix 2024: Where and when is it?

The 2024 Paris Roubaix Femmes takes place on Saturday, April 6, at 1:35 p.m. CET local time, making it a 7:35 a.m. ET or 4:35 a.m. PT start in the US . For viewers in the UK it's a 12:35 p.m. BST start , while in Australia the action begins at 9:35 p.m. AEST .

The Men's race meanwhile starts on Sunday, April 7 at 11:10 a.m. CET local time, which is 5:10 a.m. ET or 2:10 a.m. PT in the US, 10:10 a.m. BST in the UK and 7:10 p.m. in Australia.

How to watch the Paris-Roubaix 2024 online from anywhere using a VPN

If you find yourself unable to view the race locally, you may need a different way to watch -- that's where using a VPN can come in handy. A VPN is also the best way to stop your ISP from throttling your speeds by encrypting your traffic, and it's also a great idea if you're traveling and find yourself connected to a Wi-Fi network, and you want to add an extra layer of privacy for your devices and logins.

With a VPN, you're able to virtually change your location on your phone, tablet or laptop to get access to what you want to watch. If your internet provider or mobile carrier has stuck you with an IP address that incorrectly shows your location in a blackout zone, a VPN can correct that problem by giving you an IP address in your correct, non-blackout area. Most VPNs, like our  Editors' Choice, ExpressVPN , make it really easy to do this.

Using a VPN to watch or stream sports is legal in any country where VPNs are legal, including the US, UK and Canada, as long as you have a legitimate subscription to the service you're streaming. You should be sure your VPN is set up correctly to prevent leaks: Even where VPNs are legal, the streaming service may terminate the account of anyone it deems to be circumventing correctly applied blackout restrictions.

Quick tips for streaming Paris-Roubaix 2024 using a VPN

  • With four variables at play -- your ISP, browser, video streaming provider and VPN -- your experience and success when streaming the 2024 Paris-Roubaix live may vary.
  • If you don't see your desired location as a default option for ExpressVPN, try using the "search for city or country" option.
  • If you're having trouble after you've turned on your VPN and set it to the correct viewing area, there are two things you can try for a quick fix. First, log into your streaming service subscription account and make sure the address registered for the account is an address in the correct viewing area. If not, you may need to change the physical address on file with your account. Second, some smart TVs -- like Roku -- don't have VPN apps you can install directly on the device itself. Instead, you'll have to install the VPN on your router or the mobile hotspot you're using (like your phone) so that any device on its Wi-Fi network now appears in the correct viewing location.
  • All of the VPN providers we recommend have helpful instructions on their main site for quickly installing the VPN on your router. In some cases with smart TV services, after you install a cable network's sports app, you'll be asked to verify a numeric code or click a link sent to your email address on file for your smart TV. This is where having a VPN on your router will also help, since both devices will appear to be in the correct location.
  • And remember, browsers can often give away a location despite using a VPN, so be sure you're using a privacy-first browser to log into your services. We normally recommend  Brave .

Nelly Korda rallies to win 3rd straight LPGA Tour start at Ford Championship

Nelly Korda

GILBERT, Ariz. (AP) — Nelly Korda won her hometown event in a playoff after closing eagle-birdie. She withstood brutal wind in Southern California to win in another playoff last week.

The world No. 1 made it three straight by staying steady through a soggy Sunday in the desert.

Korda became the first LPGA Tour player in eight years to win three straight starts, shooting a 7-under 65 to rally for for a two-stroke victory in the Ford Championship.

"It's very hard mentally to be 100% especially after a win, especially playing in tough conditions," Korda said. "So as boring as it sounds I was just taking it shot by shot and seeing where I was going to end up. To get three in a row, that's just a dream come true."

Korda won the Drive On Championship in late January in her hometown of Bradenton, Florida, before sitting out all of the LPGA Tour's Asian swing. She was still sharp after a seven-week break, winning the Fir Hill Seri Pak Championship in a playoff last week outside Los Angeles to move back atop the world ranking.

Korda stayed steady through four days in the desert, entering the final round two shots back through weather that got progressively worse at Seville Golf and Country Club.

Korda nearly holed out her second shot on the short par-4 16th to take the lead and birdied No. 18 to finish at 20-under 268 for her 11th career LPGA victory. She's the first LPGA Tour player to win three straight starts since Ariya Jutanugarn in 2016 and first American since Nancy Lopez won five straight 1978.

"(It) just honestly feels like a blur," Korda said. "Taking it day by day, really trying to stay very present and just played really good golf, solid golf in tough conditions today, which I'm very happy about."

Australian rookie Hira Naveed was in position to tie Korda after hitting her second shot just right of the par-5 18th, but an indifferent chip led to a par. The former Pepperdine player shot 66 to finish second at 18 under in her second career start.

Lexi Thompson briefly shared the lead and was within a shot through 15 holes in her bid to win for the first time since 2019. She hit driver on the 16th and sent it way right into the water, leading to a bogey.

Thompson also missed a short par putt on No. 17 before closing with a two-putt birdie on 18 to shoot 68. She finished in a five-way tie for fourth at 17 under.

"It was crazy conditions, but it was almost just like it gets to where it's mental when it comes to these kind of conditions," Thompson said. "You just have to stay positive with it and know that pars are a good score. If you have a good number, take advantage of it; try to shoot for the pin and make some birdies."

Temperatures dropped dramatically and steady rain fell most of the final round, adding a layer of difficulty at a tournament that started with two days of record-setting scores.

The inclement weather did little to slow the leaders down, with four players tied for the lead and 11 within two shots early on the back nine.

Korda had consecutive birdies starting on No. 4 to kick off her final round and added another on the par-4 ninth to turn in 3-under 33. She tied for the lead with a birdie on the par-5 12th and took it outright at 18 under by making a 6-foot birdie putt on 13.

Thompson and Haveed tied her, but Korda went back up with her near holeout on 16, setting up a birdie that gave her a one-shot lead. Korda hit a massive drive on No. 18 and chipped to three feet for a closing birdie.

"Just tried to stay really aggressive and I knew I had to shoot a low one to be in contention," Korda said "Just played really smart golf out there today."

Naveed made the record-low cut of 5 under on the number and raced up the leaderboard with a third-round 65 before the winds picked up. She pulled into a tie for the lead at 18 under with a birdie on the island par-3 17th, but left her chip on 18 about 20 feet short and missed the putt.

"It's just breathing a sigh of relief really and just saying, 'All right, put your head down, there is scoring opportunities out there,'" Naveed said. "Just go out there and try to do the best you can, commit to every shot, and try and hole some putts. So happy to do that on the weekend."

So is Korda after putting herself in position to make it four straight at the T-Mobile Match Play next week in Las Vegas.

Because two candidates finished in an exact tie for second place, three Democrats will advance to the November election in the 16th Congressional District. It’s the first competitive three-way runoff since California adopted the top two system in 2012.

Whoever didn’t vote in a U.S. House primary in Silicon Valley may have helped make history.

Tied for second place in the March 5 primary with exactly 30,249 votes each, Assemblymember Evan Low and Santa Clara County Supervisor Joe Simitian are both advancing to the November general election, joining top vote-getter Sam Liccardo, former mayor of San Jose, according to results certified this afternoon by election officials in Santa Clara and San Mateo counties.

The stage is set for a competitive three-way November runoff — a first since California adopted its top two primary starting in 2012. All three are Democrats.

Low thanked his supporters in a statement this afternoon after the results were certified. “This historically close race shows that every vote really counts,” he said. “I look forward to continuing to share my vision for the future with every voter in the coming months.”

It was the only contest among the state’s 52 congressional districts still undecided into this week. The top two law says that if there’s a tie for second place, both candidates advance. But that provision was rarely looked at until Low and Simitian kept jockeying for second with every vote count.

There was a three-way state Assembly race in November 2016, but two of the candidates were write-ins who tied in the primary with 32 votes each and stood no chance in the general, said Rob Pyers , research director of the California Target Book, the nonpartisan group that tracks election data.

“It’s basically as rare as a four-leaf clover or getting a peanut with three nuts in it,” Democratic strategist Michael Trujillo said.

It also means that California could have its first member of Congress elected without a clear majority in a long time, given how close the primary was among the three frontrunners, he added. Liccardo finished with 21% of the vote, while Low and Simitian each had about 17%.

What could change that dynamic, however, is if one of the candidates requests a recount. California does not have automatic recounts; instead, any registered voter can request one, but must pay for it themselves . In Santa Clara County alone, a recount is estimated to cost $320,000 , the San Jose Spotlight reported.

But neither Low or Simitian have the incentive to do it, Trujillo said. “I think both are just gonna be like, ‘Look, let’s just we’re in the runoff. Let’s move forward.’”

For Liccardo, who now has an additional opponent to worry about, the tie complicates the race, strategists say.

“It makes the calculus of where or who to hit … a lot harder, because there’s no guarantee those votes come back to you,” said Democratic consultant Andrew Acosta.

It could also make it harder for Liccardo to consolidate votes, Trujillo said.

“When you’re in the runoff, your goal is to consolidate the voters that didn’t go with you or your opponent,” he said. “Having a third place candidate still there, with a significant amount of the vote, is annoying.”

Liccardo spokesperson Orrin Evans did not directly address the tie when asked for comment today.

“We welcome the opportunity to continue to talk to voters about the issues facing our communities, including the high cost of living, utility rates and housing and Sam’s long record of fighting on behalf of residents,” he said in a statement.

Simitian also said that “every vote counts” and that he looked forward to the fall campaign.

“Sometimes it takes a while for democracy to work,” he said in a statement. “This has been one of those times. Call it a cliffhanger, a rollercoaster, a wild ride — but it has absolutely been worth the wait!”

The three candidates will seek support from Democratic voters who didn’t participate in the primary or backed others, plus Republican voters and those not affiliated with a major party, strategists say.

All three Democrats are current or former elected officials with similar stances on issues, so they will try to “get out ahead and try to shine brighter” to distinguish themselves from others, Acosta said.

“All these campaigns have to be as efficient as possible to figure out who they go spend time talking to,” he said.

And the race will only get more expensive. It is already one of the most expensive House races in California, with candidates spending a collective $5.3 million, according to data analyzed by OpenSecrets. The safe Democratic district, represented by Rep. Anna Eshoo who is retiring from Congress, is one of the wealthiest in California and in the country.

Congressional primary tie in California points to three-way race in November

vote ballot processing

A congressional race in California could look very different from the rest as two candidates are poised to tie for second place in a state where typically only the top two finishers advance to the general election.

Democrats Evan Low and Joe Simitian each garnered 16.6% of the vote with 30,249 votes each, according to unofficial state results on the California Secretary of State’s website for the 16th Congressional District.

They'll both have their names on the ballot, along with fellow Democrat and first place finisher Sam Liccardo, unless a voter requests a recount.

NBC News has projected that Liccardo, with 21.1% of the vote, will advance to the general election.

San Mateo and Santa Clara counties both released their official results on Thursday, starting the clock for a five-day period when voters can call for a recount.

The candidates are vying to fill the seat being vacated by Democratic Rep. Anna Eshoo, who announced in November that she would not seek re-election after serving in Congress since 1993 .

In California primaries, the two candidates who receive the most votes move on to the general election, regardless of their political party. But a tie in the top two spots means those candidates advance.

"It's the kind of thing that is very low probability of ever happening, but they foresaw it in the law and created this rule that they go into the runoff together," said Paul Mitchell, the vice president of voter data vendor Political Data Inc.

Any voter can request a recount, but in doing so they have to front the associated costs. Mitchell estimated that a recount could cost as much as $325,000.

politics political politician

Low or Simitian could also request a recount.

"I think that you're only going to want to request a recount if you're pretty sure you're going to win it," said Justin Levitt, a law professor at Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles.

"You need an awful lot of confidence to make sure that you win by one rather than losing by one at this point," he added.

Low is a California assembly member, and Simitian is a Santa Clara county supervisor.

"This historically close race shows that every vote really counts," Low said in a statement. "I could not have made it this far without every one of you, and I hope to earn your support once again in November."

In his statement, Simitian said "this is what a functioning democracy looks like."

"Sometimes it takes a while for democracy to work," he said. "This has been one of those times. Call it a cliffhanger, a rollercoaster, a wild ride — but it has absolutely been worth the wait!”

Neither campaign directly responded to questions about whether they would request a recount.

Liccardo could also call for a recount if he wants to try to avoid being in a three-way race.

But, Mitchell said, “it’d be kind of weird” for him to do that.

Liccardo, the former mayor of San José, did not immediately respond to a request for comment Thursday night.

Balsamo wins final stage of tour of california while van der breggen takes overall title.

results of the tour of california

Italy's Elisa Balsamo ( Valcar-Cylance Cycling ) sprinted to victory on the third and final stage of the Tour of California Women's Race , which was won overall by world road race champion Anna van der Breggen ahead of her Boels Dolmans teammate and 2018 race winner Katie Hall , with CCC-Liv 's Ashleigh Moolman-Pasio in third place.

Balsamo had finished second on the race's opening stage in Ventura, almost 20 seconds behind lone stage winner Van der Breggen, and was therefore thrilled to sprint home to the win on stage 3, getting the better of Astana's Arlenis Sierra and Leigh Ann Ganzar (Hagens Berman-Supermint).

Van der Breggen dominated the race to take her second overall title in California, having also won the race in 2017. The Dutchwoman won stage 1, and then was happy to see her teammate Hall win the second stage on to Mount Baldy, where Van der Breggen took second place, just behind the American, putting significant time into their rivals.

The third and final stage from Santa Clarita to Pasadena was still tough enough not to be considered a formality, and Van der Breggen was active throughout the day before it all came down to the bunch sprint that went in Balsamo's favour.
