South Korea experiences four distinct seasons. Generally, the best times to visit South Korea are in spring (March to May) for the cherry blossoms and autumn (September to November) for the fall foliage . Both periods have mild temperatures with an average range of around 10–16°C (50–61°F), with more clear days than summer/winter.

South Korea Weather and Climate

South Korea has four distinct seasons:

Spring (March to May): Being one of the best times to visit South Korea, the average temperature ranges from 8–16°C (46–61°F) , providing pleasant weather to enjoy the cherry blossoms and outdoor activities.

Summer (June to August): The sweltering conditions may make it uncomfortable for you to explore sightseeing spots during summer in South Korea. The average daily high during this season is 30°C (86°F) and there is frequent rainfall due to the rainy season. June is a better time to travel compared to July and August as it's cooler and has fewer crowds, with an average daily temperature range of 18–27°C (64–81°F).

Autumn (September to November): This is another one of the best times to visit South Korea. Cooler temperatures and decreased rainfall are the main features of this season. The average night-day temperature range is from 10 to 18°C (50–64°F). Many locals choose to go hiking during fall.

Winter (December to February): It is the coldest and driest time of the year, with temperatures ranging from 3 to 5°C (37–41°F) on a typical day. We don't usually advise visiting South Korea during this period because it is too cold for comfort. However, if you are going for skiing or snowboarding activities, it's a different story. A Japanese skiing/ winter experience is even better though.

The Worst Times to Visit South Korea

The summer months (July to August) in South Korea are the worst time to visit. High temperatures usually reach up 35°C (95°F) on the hottest days, and two-thirds of the annual rainfall occurs during this season, making heavy rainfall common. Therefore, you're recommended to avoid this period if you have a flexible schedule.

The second worst time to visit South Korea is in winter , from December to February. January is the coldest month of the year, with temperatures in Seoul sometimes dropping below -10°C (14°F) and occasionally falling below -15°C (5°F).

Best Times for Pleasant Weather and Fewer Crowds

Late April to May has mild weather in South Korea , with average daily temperatures ranging from 13 to 23°C (55–73°F), and there are more sunny days before the rainy season arrives. The crowds of people viewing the cherry blossoms have disappeared and the summer vacation has not yet started, making it a perfect time to do outdoor activities and go sightseeing.

June is the start of summer and the rainy season in South Korea. The night-day temperature range is about 18–27°C (64–81°F) and rainfall typically consists of steady drizzles, but it doesn't rain every day.

September marks the tail end of the summer crowds and the rainy season. The weather tends to be drier and cooler, with an average daily temperature range of 17–26°C (63–79°F). More crowds arrive in October and November for the colorful autumn scenery. South Korea usually has a 3-day holiday in September for the important Chuseok (Mid-Autumn) festival and some stores may close or open late. Chuseok would not affect your trip and could be a chance to see more of Korea's culture.

The Cheapest Time to Visit South Korea

Winter (December to February) is the cheapest time to visit South Korea, except during Christmas and New Year (usually from December 23rd to January 5th). Not only could you benefit from lower hotel prices and better deals on international flights, but also you would see fewer crowds. However, be prepared for the chilly weather!

January and February in South Korea have the coldest and driest weather of the year, with temperatures dropping as low as -10°C (14°F). It's quite cold and it may not be an ideal time for you to visit the country.

Festivals and events: Seollal, Korean Lunar New Year, is the most important festival in South Korea. During this time, you could immerse yourself in Korean culture at a temple fair to experience traditional Korean performances, sample local cuisines, and pray for the coming year.

March to April: Best Time for Cherry Blossoms

• Average temperature: 5–14°C (41–57°F)
• Average rainfall: 56 mm (2 in)

The cherry blossom season, from March to April, is one of the best times to visit South Korea due to the pleasant weather and increased number of sunny days. The cherry blossoms are usually in full bloom from late March to early April.

Festivals and events: Cherry blossom festivals are held in many cities in South Korea to view the charming pink blossoms, and it's the most popular event in spring.

May: Warm with Clearer Days

• Average temperature: 13–23°C (55–73°F)
• Average rainfall: 106 mm (4 in)

May offers an excellent opportunity for travel in South Korea due to its pleasant climate and sunny days. It's a perfect time to travel, particularly if you have a flexible schedule , as the rainy season and summer vacation crowds have yet to arrive.

June: Coolest Summer Month

• Average temperature: 18–27°C (64–81°F)
• Average rainfall: 133 mm (5 in)

June marks the beginning of summer in South Korea and is considered to be the coolest month to travel during the summer season. However, it is also the start of the rainy season, which typically means a steady drizzle rather than downpours.

June is a better month for families with school-age children (if you can get time off school) compared to July and August because you could enjoy fewer crowds and lower costs.

Festivals and events: South Korea celebrates the Dragon Boat Festival. As well as seeing dragon boat races, you could also eat aizi cake (wormwood rice dumplings) and appreciate captivating traditional performances.

July to August: Hot and Humid

• Average temperature: 22–31°C (72–88°F)
• Average rainfall: 380 mm (15 in)

July and August are the hottest months of the year, and the rainfall is very high and sometimes stormy. However, it does not rain every day. High temperatures could exceed 35°C (95°F), creating an uncomfortable feeling of heat and humidity while doing outdoor sightseeing on some days. There are also the summer vacation crowds. If you are flexible with when you can go, it is suggested that you avoid this period.

September: End of the Rainy Season with Fewer Crowds

• Average temperature: 17–26°C (63–79°F)
• Average rainfall: 169 mm (7 in)

The weather becomes cooler and drier in September. You could expect fewer crowds and cheaper costs when traveling to South Korea during this month.

Festivals and events: The Chuseok festival is another important festival in South Korea where you could appreciate the full moon and enjoy traditional performances, immersing yourself in the festive atmosphere.

October to November: Best Time for Autumn Foliage

• Average temperature: 7–16°C (45–61°F)
• Average rainfall: 52 mm (2 in)

October to November is one of the peak times to travel to South Korea due to the comfortable weather and sunny days. The whole country explodes with colors and you could enjoy the stunning red and yellow fall foliage scenery.

December: Celebrating Christmas

• Average temperature: -3–4°C (27–39°F)
• Average rainfall: 22 mm (1 in)

December is cold and dry in South Korea. Although it's not quite as cold as January, it's too cold for travel without being encumbered by lots of warm clothing. If you want to celebrate Christmas with your family in South Korea, remember to book your Christmas feast in advance.

When Is the Best Time of Year to Visit South Korea?

South Korea’s four seasons each have something special to offer visitors of the country, but depending on what you want out of your Korean experience, some times are better to travel than others. Read on to find out what to expect from each month of the year.

While many prefer to avoid the cold, there is a certain charm about cozying up in a warm coat and wandering through crisp, white snow, which tends to fall most often in January.

Most points of interest are also far less congested, making it a great time to visit, especially for those looking to avoid the crowds of the big cities. The few exceptions are the country’s ski resorts , which are excellent sites to partake in a number of snow activities, such as skiing, snowboarding and sledding. Visitors can also enjoy South Korea’s efficient transportation, which still runs like clockwork despite icy conditions.

Rainfall: 7 days

Temperature: 28°F (-2°C)

The Korean winter is long and cold, extending until late February. Nevertheless, visitors can still enjoy the country’s many indoor facilities such as theme parks, museums, restaurants and jjimjilbangs (Korean spas) – many of which are connected directly to the subway, eliminating the need for walking outside in the frigid weather. Furthermore, shopaholics can take advantage of the huge sales that are held nationwide at mega-malls and department stores throughout this month.

The effects of the Siberian weather system are more pronounced the further north you go, so, for the warmest temperatures, stick to the southern areas, such as the coastal city of Busan or the beautiful Jeju Island.

Rainfall: 6 days

Temperature: 33°F (0°C)

As spring sets in and temperatures begin to warm up, locals head for the mountains, making use of the country’s many national parks, which are canopied in colorful wildflowers. The effects of the change in weather can also be seen in a number of unique festivals such as the Jeju Fire Festival and the Jindo Sea Parting Festival .

Be mindful, however, that during late March, temperatures can unexpectedly drop again, so it’s always a good idea to dress in layers. In fact, Koreans use the poetic expression “Ggot saem chuui” (“The winter is jealous of flowers”) to describe the fickle weather.

Temperature: 42°F (6°C)

Japan’s cherry blossoms may be legendary, but Korea’s blossoms are also a sight to behold. Multiple cherry blossom festivals take place during the first and second week of April as lakes, paths and parks are beautified by seemingly endless canopies of blooms.

The caveat: April is also the time of year when the notorious yellow dust from the Gobi Desert covers the Korean peninsula, creating an unwelcomed haze and dustiness. Avoid this month if you have allergies or be sure to bring a supply of masks.

Rainfall: 8 days

Temperature: 55°F (13°C)

May’s weather is the least likely to be inclement, making it one of the most popular months of the year to visit South Korea. Hotel and plane ticket prices are also very manageable, but it’s advisable to book early, as the country’s numerous springtime visitors can limit your lodging options.

Take advantage of the mostly sunny days to enjoy the great outdoors. There are plenty of events and festivals to experience, with the Damyang Bamboo Festival and Boseong Green Tea Festival in Jeollanam Province being local favorites.

Rainfall: 9 days

Temperature: 64°F (18°C)

Like May, June is a great time of the year to avoid the crowds and enjoy the still-mild weather, particularly in Korea’s coastal regions , which tend to become overcrowded with tourists in July. Evenings can be cool, so it’s not a bad idea to carry a light jacket when headed out to dinner or a night out on the town.

Rainfall: 10 days

Temperature: 72°F (22°C)

Summers in Korea can be intolerably hot and muggy, so you might just find yourself hopping from one air-conditioned venue to the next. The country’s monsoon season also begins in late July, and showers can be intense and long, with many lasting all day.

The heat and rain can be a deal-breaker for many, but for those not fussed by weather, July can be a very fun time to visit. Music festivals like Ultra Korea and the Incheon Pentaport Rock Festival, and cultural events like the Boryeong Mud Festival and Sinchon Water Gun Festival, are on just about every weekend and make for a great way to beat the heat.

Rainfall: 16 days

Temperature: 77°F (25°C)

While the scorching heat makes August a great month to hit Korea’s beaches and water parks, it is also summer vacation for most Korean schools, universities and companies. Therefore, restaurants, shopping centers and cultural complexes can be overly crowded. With a growing love for staycations, hotels are also at full occupancy and certain amenities like swimming pools are virtually impossible to access.

South Korea is less vulnerable to typhoons than neighboring countries, but typically one to three typhoons can be expected per year. They usually pass over South Korea in late summer, especially in August and bring torrential rains, so don’t leave home without a sturdy umbrella and a raincoat.

Rainfall: 15 days

Temperature: 78°F (26°C)

September is one of the most unpredictable months of the year. The early days of the month can be some of the hottest of the year while the latter days can be chilly and autumn-like. Consider bringing a few items that can be layered depending on the temperature.

As the country gets ready for fall, events such as the Andong International Mask Dance Festival and Hyoseok Cultural Festival provide plenty of fun activities for families and individuals.

Temperature: 70°F (21°C)

With nearly perfect weather and a wealth of events and festivals such as the Busan International Film Festival and Jinju Lantern Festival, October is without a doubt one of the best months to visit South Korea.

Korea’s mountains erupt in a magnificent array of reds, yellows and oranges, and locals flock to national parks to take in the technicolor landscape of natural beauty. Schedule your trip to enjoy the changing of the leaves, especially enjoyable in the Seoraksan and Bukhansan mountain regions.

T-shirt weather can continue well into October, but you’re likely to need a few extra layers by this month.

Temperature: 59°F (15°C)

Like October, November is known to have mild temperatures, low rainfall and a wealth of unadulterated natural beauty. Enjoy the crisp, cool air as you marvel at the colorful lights at the Seoul Lantern Festival, or try your hand at kimchi making at the Seoul Kimchi Festival.

Temperature: 45°F (7°C)

For those who don’t mind the cold, December is also a fun time to visit. Sure, there’s the cold, which can be excruciating on certain days, but there’s also snow, festive decor and lots of merrymaking.

While businesses shut down for Christmas in many cities worldwide, larger businesses in Seoul boom with festivities throughout December and rarely close for the holidays.

When not to go

Seoul can be a tough place to visit during the dog days of summer or the brutally cold days of winter, depending on where you’re coming from and what you’re used to. In general, late summer (late July to late August) is very hot and muggy, not to mention rainy, which could make sightseeing a hassle. Similarly, late winter (early January to late February) can be very cold and dry, making visiting outdoor destinations uncomfortable for some.

South Korea’s two main holidays, Seollal (Lunar New Year), which usually falls in January or February, and Chuseok , which takes place in September or October, are some of the busiest times for domestic travel since people flock to their hometowns to visit family. This can make travelling around the country nearly impossible if not planned months in advance. Furthermore, many attractions are closed during these days, and Seoul becomes unusually quiet.

One of the essential things you should consider when planning a holiday in South Korea is the weather. When is the best time to visit South Korea, you might be wondering.

Korea has four distinct seasons with significant differences in temperature and humidity. So, you should choose the right time to visit depending on what you would like to do during your holiday. Rest assured, though, there is no wrong time to visit Korea.

Valuable things to know when you visit Korea for the first time

South Korea Visa

Depending on where you are traveling from, you will or won’t need a visa . Check your Visa requirements here!

Currently, South Korea has in place a visa-free online application process for certain eligible countries (you can check the list here ) that you must obtain before your trip.

K-ETA or the Korean Electronic Travel Authorization must be obtained before boarding a flight or ship. Here is some useful information regarding the K-ETA visa:

• The approval process takes more than 72 hours, thus it is useful to apply in advance;
• You will need to have accommodation booked before applying for the K-ETA, the address is one of the required information.
• The validity of the K-ETA visa is of 2 years from the date of approval;
• With the K-ETA you can stay in South Korea for 30 to 90 days;
• However, if you are visiting for travel purposes, and plan to return after your first visit, you will have to come back and update your visa with the new hotel address;
• One person can apply for up to 30 persons and can pay for all at once;
• K-ETA price : 10.000 won (around 9-10 USD)

The best time to visit South Korea (including activities)

Spring in south korea (march-may).

My favorite season, the Korean spring, covers the months from March to May. I believe it is the best time to explore the country’s natural beauty, forested mountains, and nature reserves.

March would be the coldest of the 3 spring months in South Korea, with temperatures between 4 °C  (39 °F ) and 9 °C  (48 °F ). If you are traveling during April, expect a daily average temperature that sits around 17 °C  (63 °F ), while May sees temperatures rise to an average of 24°C (75°F).

We spent most spring weekends traveling outside Seoul , drinking coffee on the banks of Majang Lake in Paju , enjoying a breathtaking mountain panorama in Chunchon , or strolling the pedicured lanes of The Garden of Morning Calm .

It is also a great time to visit one of the tranquil mountain-top temples.

The temple on Naksam Mountain in the country’s east was the first we saw. Apart from the charming architecture and the carefully maintained grounds of the temple complex, I clearly remember our gratitude, gazing at the sparkling sea below us as we stood at the cliff’s edge. After all, we reached the opposite end of the Old World, a moment I had dreamed of since childhood. For a couple of minutes, I imagined myself in the shoes of the great explorers of old, embarking on a journey on that mysterious sea towards wonderous and unchartered lands.

If you happen to be in Seoul during spring , the city’s countless parks return to life after the winter slumber, and everything shines in the bright yellow sun. You can hike up one of Seoul’s mountains and enjoy a majestic view of a sprawling world city.

Or, you can have a picnic on the shores of the Han river, Korean style —you don’t need to pack and carry snacks, you order a basket from your mobile, and they’ll bring it directly to your picnic spot. You only need a local Korean number.

However, if you are in Korea from late March to early April, you are in for a colorful, magical experience— cherry blossom season . Words can’t begin to describe the beauty of it. It is stunning!

But wait, it can get even better. How would you like to be a fairy tale princess or prince for a day?

One weekend during the cherry blossom season, we rented a set of traditional Korean clothes and then walked the storied streets of Seoul’s old city, the Bukchon Hanok .

Unlike my beautiful wife, I am a rather bland, average-looking, middle-aged guy. So, imagine my surprise when I was repeatedly asked by Korean ladies, young and old, to pose for pictures while dressed in hanbok.

Once we left our admirers behind, we arrived at the grounds of one of the main medieval palaces of Seoul. The blossoming cherry trees enhanced the already impressive Gyeongbokgung palace complex with its gardens, pond, and mountainous background. And, as a bonus, wearing a hanbok came with free admittance to all of Seoul’s palaces .

Summer in South Korea (June-August)

Korean summer differs from the sunny and dry European season, although we are at similar latitudes. Korea has a humid climate as a peninsula surrounded by the ocean. While June is still pleasant, July and August are characterized by frequent showers and steamy and hot temperatures. Still, despite the occasional rain, it is the best season to enjoy the seaside.

Average temperatures by month during summer in South Korea:

June – Minimum 18.3 °C ( 65 °F) ; Maximum 27.5 °C ( 82 °F)

July – Minimum 22 °C ( 72 °F) ; Maximum 28.9 °C ( 84 °F)

August – Minimum 22.6 °C (73 °F) ; Maximum 29.9 °C ( 86 °F)

One of our favorite places in South Korea is its second-largest city, Busan . The city’s proximity to Japan made it an ideal staging post for Kubilai Khan’s attempted invasion of Japan and the landing spot of the invading Japanese armies a few centuries later. Moreover, Busan became the temporary South Korean capital and the last bastion of the UN-led troops during the early stages of the Korean War (1950-1953).

Despite its war-ridden past, Busan is a colorful and cosmopolitan metropolis and, in my opinion, the best city to live in Korea. It has several urban beaches, including the famous Haeundae , and countless restaurants and bars overlooking them. Also, its skyscrapers, diverse population, and party vibe reminded us of our earlier home in Hong Kong.

Another good seaside option is the area around the southern city of Yeosu . Although it is a small and tranquil place compared to Seoul and Busan, there are plenty of things to do in the city proper and around it. For example, you can visit the Boseong tea fields . This place should be on anyone’s South Korea bucket list !

Having ridden the train between the green tea plantations of Sri Lanka, our expectations were rather modest when we decided to go to Boseong one summer morning.

South Korea is not known for its tea, at least not in the West. Well, I am glad to say that we were pleasantly surprised. Not only were the lush green hills breathtaking, but we had the chance to sample the delicious tea-based local cuisine. Green tea ice cream, green tea coffee, green tea cold-noodle soup…you name it. Also, there is a small but beautiful bamboo forest open to the plantation’s visitors.

You can choose to rent a car and drive there from Yeosu or Busan, or you can go on a day trip from Seoul or Busan .

The Boriam Temple complex is a must-do if you are holidaying around Yeosu. Perhaps we were lucky, but during our trip, a thick fog blanketed the mountain complex. As we climbed the footpath to the main temple, the fog suddenly lifted, uncovering centuries-old buildings perched on cliffs’ edges at almost impossible angles. Despite my pragmatic nature, given the location and architecture, I could see the attraction of the spiritual life chosen by the resident monks.

If you prefer surfing or similar water sports, the best option is the Yangyang area on the East coast. Apart from the wavey ocean, there are plenty of things to do in the area. For example, we had one of the best crab dinners ever in the nearby city of Gangneung .

Lastly, you can always choose a mountain camping spot if you are not into the seaside. Just be aware that Korean camping is more like what we call glamping in Europe, meaning that you’ll have almost all the comforts of a hotel even if you stay in a tent or camper van: running water and sanitation, high-speed internet, grocery store, hot showers, barbecue equipment and so on. It is not quite the luxurious glamping experience of Hong Kong, but it is definitely not the wild-nature camping practiced in East Europe.

Autumn in South Korea (September- November)

Autumn is probably the most colorful season in Korea, with nature putting on its Sunday clothes. The temperatures are pleasant, and the humidity is low compared to summer. It is an excellent time to visit if you plan to spend your time outdoors in Seoul or outside the capital.

Average temperatures by month during autumn in South Korea:

September – Minimum 17.2 °C (63 °F) ; Maximum 26.1 °C ( 79 °F)

October – Minimum 9.9 °C (50 °F) ; Maximum 20.1 °C ( 68 °F)

November – Minimum 2.4 °C (37 °F) ; Maximum 11.7 °C ( 53 °F)

Seoul is amazing in autumn!

The warm sunlight and the red, yellow, brown, and green of its countless parks lend the city a painting-like feel. You can explore the city’s high-tech streets and long historical heritage without fearing a sudden shower. Also, it’s a great occasion to enjoy a uniquely Korean experience, the jjimjilbang .

A jjimjilbang is a typical Korean SPA and bathhouse with traditional saunas, hot tubs, and massage tables. The smaller ones are fully segregated by gender, but some of the large ones can be enjoyed by couples with children, except for the hot tub area.

Popular jimjilbangs to try in Seoul:  LK SPA  near Myeongdong and Dongdaemun;  Hwanggeum Sauna  in Myeongdong;  Dragon Hill Spa & Resort  in Yongsan; and Aquafield in Goyaing or Hanam.

If you are traveling to  Busan , you should not miss  Busan SPA Land Centum .

Outside of Seoul , I would recommend a trip to Gyeongju , the ancient capital of one of the iconic Korean kingdoms (The Kingdom of Silla). It is a 2-hour journey from Seoul via the express train , but it is worth it.

The old city area is a UNESCO World Heritage site, and you will understand why once you walk its streets. It is like literally going back into the past.

You can also visit Rich Man Choe’s former residence to get a glimpse of how a wealthy Korean family used to live.

Moreover, you’ll have the chance to admire the earthen Royal tombs of the kings of old, erected in a beautiful natural setting—these guys had good landscaping tastes.

Since you are there, you should definitely dine in one of the traditional restaurants operating in the historic buildings. We had an exquisite 15-course lunch in one of the romantic wood and paper buildings, sitting on the wooden floor—allegedly, this was considered an average meal by the former kings and queens.

A few kilometers from Gyeongju’s old city, you can find another UNESCO site, the Bulguksa temple complex . The temple is a masterpiece of the golden age of Buddhist art in the Silla kingdom. Currently, it serves as the districtual head temple of the Jogye Order of Korean Buddhism.

I already mentioned Busan as a seaside destination, but you can also consider it in the autumn. For instance, I was swimming in the ocean in late September. It was a bit cold but enjoyable.

Since the weather is better, it is the optimal period for a visit to Busan’s Gamcheon Culture village or a trip to the Ahopsan Bamboo Forest .

If you are not in the mood for a relatively long train trip to the South-East, an exciting destination close to Seoul is Suwon . The main tourist attraction is Hwaseong Fortress or Suwon Hwaseong, a UNESCO World Heritage site.

The fortress’ wall surrounds Suwon’s center, and once, it encircled the entire city. Walking around its walls through the wooded areas can take your mind away from the hustle and bustle of the 21 st century.

Today’s visitors can admire the impressive fortress’s several gates and sentry towers. Moreover, Suwon is famous for its local beef dish, the Suwon Galbi. Make sure you try it because it is delicious.

One red flag, though, if you are planning an Autumn vacation. Try to avoid the Korean Thanksgiving celebration, Chuseok . The entire nation is on holiday for circa a week, so everything is crowded, and accommodation prices are higher than usual. Chuesok is usually in September, but the exact dates change yearly based on an archaic formula.

Winter in South Korea (December-February)

Winter is colder than one might expect due to the proximity of the ocean. Temperatures in Seoul can go below -20 degrees Celsius, and given the high humidity, it feels even colder than it actually is. However, due to some meteorological peculiarity that I can’t explain, cold days and warmer days alternate. During the winter we lived there, every bone-chilling day was followed by a few warmer days (around 0 degrees Celsius).

Average temperatures by month during winter in South Korea:

December – Minimum -4.1 °C (25 °F) ; Maximum 4 °C ( 39 °F)

January – Minimum -6.2 °C (21 °F) ; Maximum 2 °C ( 36 °F)

February – Minimum -3.8 °C (25 °F) ; Maximum 5 °C ( 41 °F)

Like any North and East European metropolis, the grey cityscape is brightened by winter-specific decorations and neon lights. There are countless public events and concerts during the cold season, and the enormous Korean department stores are bustling with shoppers.

Surprisingly, although South Korea has a majority Christian population, Christmas is not an official public holiday. However, no self-respecting Korean would forego the chance for a bit of shopping. So, if you are in Seoul in December, you’ll have a veritable Christmas experience with carols echoing in all the major shopping and entertainment areas.

The winter holiday season doesn’t end on 31 st December, though. For those who are looking for a “Christmas” in January and February, South Korea is an excellent place to be. In late January or early February, depending on the year, Koreans celebrate the Lunar New Year . Parties, shopping, spending time with family and friends—basically, it is a re-run of late December, but instead of Mr. Santa Claus, you’ll have firecrackers and dragons.

Due to its mountainous geography and frequent snowing, South Korea is one of the favored ski destinations in the region. Many of our Hong Kong friends prefered to ski in Korea instead of Japan due to the high quality of service at more affordable prices.

South Korea is a year-round destination, offering unique travel and leisure opportunities every season.

We prefer to go there in spring or autumn (or both), but if you don’t mind a bit of hot rain or cold snowfall, summer and winter are also good.

The most important thing is to align your desired activities with the right season. If you are an outdoor person, spring and autumn is the right time. While if you prefer water sports, summer might be a good time to go.

Finally, winter is the appropriate season for shopping, reveling and skiing.

The seasons of Seoul: the best times to visit

With a temperate continental climate, Seoul is known for its biting winters and blistering summers.

In between are the long-awaited but all-too-fleeting pockets of perfectly enjoyable weather, perhaps the best moments to visit. Even so, every season in South Korea ’s capital offers something worth traveling for  – with excitement in the calendar all year long – which might make for a difficult decision when it comes to planning your trip.

Customarily, summer brings the most international visitors to Seoul, further congesting an already packed city. Yet in recent years, spring and fall – with fetching foliage and ideal weather – have caught on as in-demand times to visit, too. 

As you make your own plans, here’s our guide to the best times to visit Seoul.

March to May and September to November are the best times for outdoor attractions

Unquestionably the most agreeable seasons in Seoul, spring and fall are also the best times to soak up the city’s great outdoors, from the natural wonders of its national and city parks to the back-alley treasures of its traditional villages, temples, markets and street-food stalls . A prized spot, the Han River is where visitors can paddle around on swan boats or have a chimaek picnic of fried chicken and beer ( chimaek is a slang portmanteau that combines “chicken” with the Korean word for beer, maekju ).

Every March, the Seoul Marathon  welcomes some 35,000 runners, from expert to amateur. Unlike some other races, anyone who signs up ahead of time is qualified to participate. April arguably presents Seoul’s loveliest face, when spring bursts forth in a palette of pinks and whites and the cherry blossom trees bloom in cotton-candy swirls. Two favorite viewing spots are Yeouido Park and Namsan Park , where spectators stroll down petal-lined paths and picnic beneath flowering canopies.

Fall heralds the arrival of favorite annual traditions. South Korea’s fall harvest holiday, Chuseok, generally takes place in September: get into the harvest spirit by observing the ceremonial ritual of Sajik Daeje, a 50-minute procession that winds its way through the city near Gyeongbokgung station, paying homage to the ancient gods of earth and grain.

The crisp, dry weather continues through November and the temperature drops considerably, making this month a less expensive time to visit than September and October. The most notable happening this month might be the Seoul Lantern Festival, which sets Cheong-gye-cheon ablaze with paper lanterns and LED sculptures.

June to August are best for indoor activities

While June can be pleasant, July and August bring unbearable heat and humidity, along with heavy rains that can last all day. Luckily, Seoul has plenty of things to do for keeping dry and cool inside. Go museum or gallery hopping , experience South Korea’s quirky cafe culture or get lost in Asia’s largest underground shopping mall,  COEX , where after you’re through browsing you can enjoy an aquarium, library, movie theater and casino. 

Save money and avoid the crowds from December to February

Despite its cold climate, with dry winds that wreak havoc on the skin and throat, Seoul is wondrous in the winter. The diminished crowds make the city feel smaller and more intimate, drawing into stark relief the sights, sounds and scents of everyday life. Think snow-dusted palaces, shopkeepers sweeping the flakes from their front stoops and roasted chestnuts and sweet potatoes perfuming the air. You can also stretch your budget further, as the cold winter months are the most affordable time to visit.

If you enjoy winter sports, venture out for a day of skiing, snowboarding or ice fishing. Seollal, the Korean New Year based on the lunar calendar, typically falls between late January and mid-February. In the lead-up to the holiday, be on the lookout for special celebrations and traditional performances at folk villages and palaces.

When is the Best Time to Travel to Korea?

South Korea has very distinctive four seasons: Spring, Summer, Autumn (Fall) and Winter. Duh…? Ok, well, the keyword here is “distinctive.” Allow me to explain as this might be an important factor for you to decide when to visit Korea.

Spring in Korea: March through May

I love spring in Korea. I just can’t resist the desire to skip everything and walk outside when the universe is so beautiful. As the weather starts to warm up, it’s pleasant to explore the city and hike in the mountains.

Flowers bloom everywhere. Many international travelers tend to think of Japan as the only destination for cherry blossoms. But Korea also has many cherry blossom festivals in Seoul, Jinhae, and other places. If you are interested in chasing cherry blossoms , your best bet is from late March to early April. I went to a cherry blossom festival in Yeouido, Seoul, and it was breathtakingly beautiful! I would believe it if many couples have their first kisses here because…who wouldn’t fall in love when cherry blossoms rain all over you?

Other Considerations

Wheather : Although March officially marks spring, it still can get chilly even during the day. When I visited Korea this past May, I needed a cardigan at night.

Air pollutions : If you have asthma or allergies, be aware of the occasional dusty air. Yellow dust storm (황사) blows from China and Mongolia, typically in April.

For fruit lovers like me, summer also is a great time to enjoy sweet juicy summer fruits like watermelon, peach, strawberry, Korean melon, and grapes. I think Korean fruits are really juicy and have a perfect balance of sweet and sour profiles. In the U.S., these fruits are available all year round; however, I find them either too sweet or too sour. Unless you taste seasonally produced fruits in Korea, you will never know what I mean. I also highly recommend trying Korean melon; it is hard to find them outside of Korea.

Monsoon : Whenever I visit Korea, I try to avoid June. Mid-June through early July is a monsoon season with a high chance of daily rain. When it rains, it really pours.

Weather : Summer in Korea is hot and humid (but rather short). You won’t be sweating indoors as commercial buildings, hotels, and subway stations all run A/C. But do not expect cold air to blast like in the U.S. as energy saving is highly encouraged by the government. 

Busy season : August also is Korea’s vacation season. This means you will need to plan ahead and book your accommodations accordingly.

If you are lucky enough to visit Korea in Autumn, you will enjoy the colorful foliage covering the entire Korean peninsula.

Autumn in Korea: September through November

Autumn is my favorite time of the year to visit Korea. The entire country turns to a colorful canvas with yellow, red, gold, and green. It is quite a scene! When I recently visited Korea, I just couldn’t stop taking photos. Every corner I turned to and every angle I tried were Instagram-worthy moments.

The weather is so pleasant – not quite hot, yet not quite cold. Oh, that feeling of the breeze caressing my hair!

It’s only natural that many locals enjoy outdoor activities in autumn. Even in the subway, you will see many in hiking gear. It’s a good time to join walking tours. I personally haven’t been, but many of the local friends recommended going to the Seoul International Fireworks Festival in September.

Other Considerations:

Weather : This is the time the weather can be a bit tricky. For those who are familiar, think of the fickle Bay Area weather. Don’t be fooled by midday’s warmth, you will definitely need a jacket in the morning and night. Be prepared, and you will be just fine, though.

Notable Local Holiday: Chuseok is one of the two most important holidays in Korea, which is similar to Thanksgiving in the U.S. Per lunar calendar, dates annually change, which typically falls in September or October. In 2019, dates are Sept. 12-14.

Winter in Korea: December through February

Korea’s winter is no joke. It is cold and dry. My Vietnamese friends told me they would love to visit Korea during the winter because they have never seen snow in their lives. It never occurred to me, but I guess that could be a good reason to make a trip to Korea in winter.

If you are expecting a winter wonderland, let me clarify. The first snowfall of the year might happen in late November or early December, and it carries some significance among lovers. Snowfall happens only once in a while and less frequently sticks to make a gorgeous scene. However, the weather has become more and more unpredictable these days. Who can be so certain? 

On the bright side, this is the time my favorite winter   street foods are available everywhere: baked sweet potato, hotteok (pancake-like dessert filled with the sweet sugar syrup and bits of nuts), Odeng (skewered fish cake in hot broth) and bungeoppang (fish-shaped pastry filled with red bean pastes) to name a few.

Weather : For those who have not experienced extreme cold, Korea’s winter might be cruel. It’s a chill-to-the-bone kind of cold. I have been out of Korea for so long, sometimes I need to remind myself how cold it can be. One time I was waiting for a bus, I had excruciating pain in my ears as if they would fall off. I’d highly recommend being prepared for winter/snow gears when traveling to Korea in winter.

Notable Local Holiday : Unless you have family members to visit, I recommend avoiding traveling during Seollal (Lunar New Year). This is the most important holiday of the year in Korea. During the three-day holiday, Seoul becomes a ghost town, and many attractions and stores will be closed. Traveling to other cities would also be a huge challenge as you will have to fight your way through with millions of locals traveling to and from their hometowns. Like Chuseok, the dates change per lunar calendar but typically falls in January or February. In 2019, Seollal is on February 5 with the holiday observed February 4 through 6. 

The best season to travel can be a subjective matter, and really has to do with personal preference. But I truly believe that each of Korea’s distinctive seasons provides a unique experience for all travelers.

Average temperatures in South Korea vary drastically. Considering humidity, temperatures feel cold for about half of the year and otherwise nice with a low chance of precipitation most of the year. The area is somewhat temperate — in the 45th percentile for pleasant weather — compared to tourist destinations worldwide. Weeks with ideal weather are listed above . If you’re looking for the very warmest time to visit South Korea, the hottest months are August, July, and then June. See average monthly temperatures below. The warmest time of year is generally early August where highs are regularly around 86.8°F (30.4°C) with temperatures rarely dropping below 73.7°F (23.2°C) at night.

By contrast, it’s most likely to rain or snow in early to mid July with an average of 2 days of significant precipitation the week of July 9th.

South Korea has some very humid months, with other moderately humid months on the other side of the year. The least humid month is March (48.3% relative humidity), and the most humid month is July (74.9%).

Wind in South Korea is usually calm . The windiest month is March, followed by April and December. March’s average wind speed of around 5.3 knots (6.1 MPH or 9.9 KPH) is considered “a light breeze.” Maximum sustained winds (the highest speed for the day lasting more than a few moments) are at their highest in early April where average top sustained speeds reach 11.3 knots, which is considered a moderate breeze.

The busiest month for tourism in South Korea is January, followed by May and April. Prices for hotels and flights will be most expensive during these months, though you can save if you purchase well in advance. Tourists are unlikely to visit South Korea in December. Those willing to visit at these times will likely find it the least expensive month.

Humidity and temperatures combine to make this season feel moderately cold. Highs range from 76.6°F (24.8°C) and 47.9°F (8.8°C) with far warmer temperatures in the later months. Rain is rare with 3 to 4 days of significant precipitation per month. Spring is the busiest for tourism, which makes it a good time for those looking for things to do.

Summer (June through August)

The middle-year months have very comfortable weather with high temperatures that are comfortable. These months see the most precipitation with 4 to 6 days of precipitation per month. June – August is fairly slow season for tourism in South Korea, so lodging and other accommodations may cost slightly less.

Fall (September through November)

Fall daily highs range from 79.7°F (26.5°C) and 49.3°F (9.6°C), which will feel comfortable given the humidity and wind. It rains or snows a normal amount: 2 to 4 days per month. Tourism is the slowest during these months due to the weather, so hotels may be affordably priced.

Winter (December through February)

Weather is far too cold this time of year in South Korea to be enjoyable for warm weather travelers. The average high during this season is between 47.9°F (8.8°C) and 36°F (2.2°C). On average, it rains or snows a smalll amount: 2 to 3 times per month. These times of year are the second busiest with tourists.

When is the best time to visit South Korea?

South Korea  is prone to experiencing extreme temperatures and weather conditions in both summer and winter so the best time to visit is during the shoulder seasons of spring and autumn. During this time the weather is moderate with mild conditions (less chance of rain and low humidity levels), making it comfortable enough to spend long periods of time exploring this country’s bustling cities and beautiful landscapes. 

The best time to visit Seoul is during the spring season when temperatures are at an average of 60°F and the cherry blossoms are in full bloom. Unsurprisingly, this is also one of the most popular times to visit the buzzing city, so you expect larger crowds at popular sites and increased prices. But there really isn’t a ‘bad’ time to visit Seoul as there’s always so much going on regardless of the season. 

The best time to visit Busan can often be split between April (if you’re after cool to mild weather and cherry blossoms) and June (if you’re looking for warm temperatures and beach time). But generally, the months of May and June will give you the most agreeable weather conditions with little chance of rainfall and moderate humidity levels. 

Best for: snow-based activities and winter festivals 

If you’re traveling to South Korea in January, remember to pack your thermal clothing, a beanie, gloves, thick socks and scarves because the weather will be cold – like freezing cold. January is the coldest month of the year in South Korea which makes sense with average low temperatures sitting at 20°F.

Unfortunately, average high temperatures aren’t much better at 36°F but you will have the larger cities and popular sites largely to yourself which is a silver lining. If you want to make the most of the snow, head to ski resort towns around Pyeongchang or visit various winter festivals around the country such as the Seogwipo Penguin Festival on Jeju Island or Taebaeksan Mountain Snow Festival in Taebaek.  

Best for: hanging out in bathhouses and café hopping 

South Korea’s still well and truly in the middle of winter in February (although it’s technically the last month of the season) with temperatures at a chilly 40°F average (slightly warmer than previous months so there’s light at the end of the snow-covered tunnel). Weather conditions themselves aren’t too bad with clear, sunny mornings (albeit cold ones) that turn into cloudy afternoons, especially as the month goes on. 

Best for: flower festivals, bamboo forests and historical sightseeing 

Frozen landscapes are thawing out in South Korea in March with the first signs of spring right around the corner. While avid snow-seekers can still catch some of the fluffy white stuff at the beginning of the month, temperatures will increase as the month goes on with high averages around 52°F. Daylight hours are also getting longer with an average of 11 hours experienced per day, perfect for exploring historical sites in Gyeongju and wandering around the bamboo forests of Damyang.

Best for: hiking and the cherry blossom festival 

Spring is here in South Korea in April and so are the flowers! One of the most popular months to visit because of the cherry blossoms, April sees plenty of travelers so expect large crowds wherever you go and increased flight prices and accommodation. The mild weather experienced is also favorable for spending long periods of time outside with warmer days of 65°F scattered throughout the month.

To make the most of the nice weather after the long months of winter, hiking through South Korea’s national parks is a popular activity, especially with flowers in full bloom and relatively clear days to take in the magnificent scenery. But most people travel to South Korea in April for the famous Jinhae Gunhangje Cherry Blossom Festival on the country’s south coast for a closer look at the beautiful flowers. 

Best for: tea plantation visits and wandering ancient palaces

May is a fantastic time to visit South Korea as the cherry blossom crowds have largely disappeared but the peak summer crowds haven’t yet arrived, so you won’t be faced with higher prices or low availability. Temperatures are also getting warmer with averages of 68°F but there’s an increased chance of rainfall, especially towards the end of the month.  While the nice weather conditions suit outdoor activities, air quality can be affected by dust storms and soil particles, so be mindful of any allergies you have that may be worsened by the smogginess in larger cities. If you want to stay inside, ancient palaces such as Changgyonggung and Gyeongbokgung. 

Best for: water-based activities and picnic lunches in city gardens

While June might be the start of summer in South Korea, it’s also the beginning of monsoon season with heavy rains and high humidity levels expected. For this reason, large crowds tend to steer clear of traveling during the month so the bigger cities and popular sites should be relatively quiet.

Temperatures can reach a warm 78°F during the month, but humidity also climbs to 70%, which can make it feel hotter than it is. To escape the often oppressive-feeling heat, many travelers flock to the country’s coastal areas in search of golden sand and clear waters. Beachgoing is a popular pastime in June as the beaches are less crowded than in the coming months and resort prices aren’t yet at their peak.

Best for: island hopping, swimming and beach lounging 

Summer is at its peak in July in South Korea but so are the humidity levels which sit at a sweltering 90%. So it makes sense that holiday-makers flock to destinations like Jeju Island in search of ways to cool off (read: lounging on the beach and going for a swim). But be sure to stake out a spot early in the morning before summer holiday crowds descend.

Temperatures rarely dip below 68°F in July, instead averaging around 80°F during the day, so ensure you’re packing lots of lightweight, breathable clothing and sun-protective items such as wide-brimmed hats, sunglasses and sunscreen. 

Best for: dolphin spotting and water sports 

August in South Korea starts off just as hot and humid as July, but weather conditions start to level out as the month draws on until temperatures sit at a more comfortable average of 68°F. But it’s still a popular month to leave the busy cities behind in favor of sandy shores and clear waters, so you can expect large crowds in beachside destinations. You might even spot a bottlenose dolphin or two if you’re heading to Jeju Island. 

Best for: exploring national parks and camping 

Say goodbye to summer and hello to autumn as hot and sticky temperatures give way to cooler conditions. The large crowds of summer have gone and with it, the consistent heavy rainfall (although a few showers here and there can still be expected). Temperatures average around 66°F, which is perfect for exploring the great outdoors, especially when the landscape starts to turn an array of reds, oranges and golden browns. 

Best for: appreciating the autumn scenery and Halloween celebrations 

It might not be as iconic as the cherry blossom season, but the autumn colours that descend upon South Korea in October deserve just as much love and appreciation. Whether it’s exploring a national park, a day trip to Nami Island or a walk through a lively city garden, there’s beautiful autumn foliage to be seen everywhere you go.

The weather’s very comfortable too with conditions staying dry and temperatures averaging a cool 64°F. While you can still do all of the normal ‘touristy’ things like visit the Demilitarised Zone and other historic areas, October sees a whole heap of festive Halloween celebrations including parades, haunted houses and parties. 

Best for: tasting traditional food and museum visits 

While it’s still technically autumn, the oranges, reds and browns of October aren’t as crisp and temperatures are getting colder as the season makes way for winter. If you’re keen to stay out of the 40°F weather, November is a good month for museum wanderings and tasting some of South Korea’s most traditional food – think ddukbokki, bibimbap and kimchi. 

Best for: holiday festivals and Christmas celebrations 

Forget Europe or North America’s east coast, South Korea is where you want to be when December 25th rolls around! Large cities like Seoul and Busan really go all out with their Christmas decorations – think lanterns, colorful fairy lights and festive displays – and there’s nothing like a white Christmas with temperatures of around 37°F and lots of snow predicted during the month.

And just when you think it couldn’t get any more magical, there are plenty of holiday activities to keep you occupied during your visit such as ice skating at the Seoul City Hall or watching the annual Christmas Tree Festival in Busan. You can also head to the slopes outside of the city to participate in various snow sports like skiing and snowboarding.

See the Autumn Leaves

September to November is the best time to visit South Korea to see autumn leaves. The leaves change in colour, with stunning shades of orange and red appearing all over the country. In September, chilly autumnal temperatures can follow some of the hottest days of the year, so it's worth packing a few extra layers. October has nearly perfect weather and is a great time to enjoy the array of reds, oranges and yellows appearing across South Korea. In November, festivals such as the Seoul Lantern Festival and Seoul Kimchi Festival complement mild temperatures and natural beauty.

Winter sports

December to February is South Korea’s winter, which is cold but cosy. This is the best time to visit South Korea if you are looking enjoy some winter sports, such as skiing and snowboarding. Cooler temperatures also mean that points of interest will be far less crowded than usual. If you need to escape the cold for a while, head to one of South Korea’s many jjimjilbangs - traditional Korean spas complete with saunas and thermal baths.

Festivals and culture

As well as being the best time of year for South Korea’s cherry blossom, many exciting festivals take place between March and May. In March, Jeju Fire Festival celebrates the arrival of Spring. Farmers on Jeju Island set their pastures alight to kill old grass and eliminate pests before cattle and horses start grazing again. Daljip, or moon houses, are also burned to help fulfil villagers’ prayers for good fortune. The fascinating Jindo Miracle Sea Road Festival occurs between the end of April and early May. During this time, an incredible natural phenomenon allows festival-goers to walk straight through the middle of the parted Jindo Sea.

In July, rainy season means that the whole of South Korea feels uncomfortably damp and muggy. August brings scorching temperatures alongside torrential rains. It’s also the holiday season for most Korean schools and universities, meaning it can get extremely crowded. South Korea experiences one to three typhoons per year, with most of them passing over the country in August, so this time of year is best avoided.

Seollal (Lunar New Year) and Chuseok

South Korea’s lunar new year, Seollal, is celebrated at some point in either January or February. Chuseok, a Korean harvest festival, falls between September and October. During both festivals, many South Koreans go home to see their families, making travelling around the country quite difficult. Many attractions are also closed during these times, so Seoul becomes quite quiet. As both celebrations depend on the lunar calendar, their dates change slightly each year. It’s a good idea to check whether your planned travel dates coincide with either festival before you book your trip.

I am now planning my trip to Japan (don’t worry, this is still a South Korea travel guide) and pulling out my hair at every turn! It has taken me months of reading hundreds of online blogs and forums to finally settle on a first-timer itinerary for my 15-day trip. And after that, I have spent countless hours trying to figure out the best ways to get to these places!

Yes, Japan has an efficient transportation system but it can be oh-so confusing trying to navigate it as a foreigner planning a trip from outside the country. Should I buy the JR pass or not? Should I book my tickets when I arrive or risk them being sold out? Which trains can get me to the places I need to go? Where should I stay?… The questions, they never stop!

Whenever I start to get overwhelmed, I remember that I felt this exact same way planning my trip to South Korea! And guess what? I did not need to stress that much because everything was so seamless as soon as I figured out my basic itinerary.

I also had questions about whether I needed to buy the Korail Rail pass or not, how to get to Jeonju from the airport, the best places to visit as a first-time traveller, how to get to certain places (like the Boseong tea plantation ) independently and on and on it went!

So I am putting together this South Korea travel guide so you don’t have to stress about all these details! This guide will mainly focus on the places I visited but do feel free to leave your draft itineraries or ask me any questions below. I will be happy to take a look and give you some recommendations – as a “Senior Novice!” haha!

Anyway, let's get into it! In this South Korea travel guide, I will tell you everything you need to know about planning your first trip to South Korea, the apps you should download, whether or not you need a rail or city pass and how far in advance you need to request them.

We will explore some sample itineraries and places worth visiting on your trip.

Before you travel to South Korea, you should figure out these three things:

• Visa: check if you need to apply beforehand. Nigerians do, but several other nationalities either need a K-ETA or are visa-exempt
• Travel Days: How many days do you have to spend in the country? This will determine your itinerary and whether or not to invest in different passes available
• Do you need the Korea Rail Pass or Not? Would it actually save you some money?

South Korea Travel Guide - Do I Need a Visa or K-ETA?

If you are visiting South Korea for the first time, you need to check whether you are visa-exempt or if you need a visa or the Korea Electronic Travel Authorization (K-ETA). Most countries can apply for the K-ETA in minutes, however, if you are Nigerian, you will need to apply for a visa at the embassy or consulate beforehand.

I have written an extensive post on how to apply for a South Korean tourist visa as a Nigerian and you can find that information here . The process is pretty straightforward once you have all the required documents. I recommend applying for your visa at least one month before your trip to give enough buffer for the processing time.

South Korea Travel Guide - How Many Days is Sufficient?

I spent 12 days in South Korea and left feeling like I had spent a sufficient amount of time in the country. My itinerary was not packed, there were many hours of downtime and several places I did not get to visit. Still, I felt satisfied with my itinerary.

Generally, I recommend spending at least one week in the country and limiting your itinerary to two cities at most. If you spend less than a week, then do so in just one city, preferably Seoul .

I spent four days in Seoul and this post has details of what I did in the city. Some traveller-favourite spots, like Nami Island, N Seoul Tower , the DMZ and Itaewon, are missing but the itinerary gives you a good first draft for your Seoul itinerary.

South Korea Travel Guide - Getting to and Around South Korea

Once you've figured out your visa situation and a first draft itinerary, you can then start to plan your travels to and within the country. I will assume that your first port of entry will be Incheon International Airport, Seoul, the country's biggest airport. From here, you can make your way to the city centre or other parts of the country.

There are buses and trains aplenty. Simply download the Naver app and plug in your destination. The app will give you options to get you to where you need to be.

Be aware that Google Maps does not work in South Korea. Naver is your best bet! Also, read my article here to find out two other essential apps to download and 4 nice-to-have apps for your trip!

South Korea Travel Guide - Do I need a Korea Rail Pass or Discover Seoul Pass?

Now, to the question of whether or not you need a Discover Seoul or Korail Pass , the answer depends on your itinerary. The Korea Rail pass, as the name implies, is great if your itinerary involves several train trips. It includes unlimited boarding, within the specified period, for the high-speed KTX and KTX-Sancheon trains, as well as the conventional and tourist trains.

It does not give you access to the SRT (you don't really need this, the KTX trains are fine) and the metro (you can get a card for the metro at a vending machine in all subway stations)

I spent about 12 days in South Korea, with four of those days being in Seoul. It worked out that I did NOT need either of these passes. I used a combination of trains and buses to get around and typically bought my tickets on the day of my travels. The only train I booked in advance was that from Busan to Seoul .

You can book this ticket in advance via the official KTX website or app or through Klook . Several websites come up if you search for train tickets, but some of them have a pretty steep markup.

If you travel during peak seasons (Spring, Autumn and Holidays, especially Chuseok Holidays), then I recommend booking your tickets in advance.

My recommendation is that you tally up your individual train costs, which you can find easily on the Korea Rail website and see if this pass is worth getting. You can get the pass and reserve your seat on the train up to 30 days before your planned travel date.

You will need the Discover Seoul Pass if you plan to visit several places covered by the pass. The pass also doubles as a transit card, so if you do get it, there is no need to get another card like T-Money or Cashbee card.

Now, let's talk about some of the best cities to visit in South Korea as a first-time traveller.

For my trip, I visited Jeonju (for its Hanok Village), Boseong (for its tea plantation), Namwon (quiet countryside, beautiful hanok stay), Busan (for the beach and big city vibe) and Seoul (for everything else!). I thought these were all great places to stop by and each one had its charm.

In addition to these places, you can look up Gwangju, Gyeongju, Andong, Suwon, and Jeju Island and choose your stops based on your preferences.

To wrap up this guide, here are some considerations for the best time to visit.

Spring (Late March to May) and Autumn (Late September to November) are generally considered the best time to visit South Korea. This also means that they are the most popular times to visit. Spring is especially busy because of cherry blossoms blooming. So if you do visit then, be sure to book your flights and accommodations in advance.

When is the best time to visit South Korea?

• Month-by-month

The best time to visit South Korea is between March and May if you want to see the vibrant pink of the cherry blossoms in bloom. If you want to see the landscapes come alive as the leaves change in the cooler weathers, then we’d recommend visiting between September and November. Temperatures during these times are generally pleasant and suitable for outdoor activities.

June, July and August offer the best conditions for hiking, but the weather is hot and humid away from the mountains.

Winters in South Korea are bitterly cold, so we wouldn’t recommend visiting in December, January or February.

It’s important to take local holidays into account when planning your trip. The Korean New Year is the first day of the lunar month, and Chuseok is the 15th day of the eighth lunar month. During these times, many residents head to their rural hometowns to celebrate and many businesses are closed.

Month-by-month guide for travelling in South Korea

Visiting South Korea in January

South Korea typically sees its highest amount of snowfall this month. Tourist sites are less crowded, but it’s too cold to recommend as a good time to visit.

Visiting South Korea in February

Attractions remain less crowded, but snow is still possible in the north until the end of the month. The Korean New Year generally falls in January or February, so it’s best to avoid that time. The temperatures are still too cold to recommend visiting.

Events & Festivals

• Jeju Fire Festival (late February, early March): A giant bonfire, fireworks and K-Pop concerts are held on Jeju Island to celebrate the arrival of spring.

Visiting South Korea in March

Temperatures begin to increase during March, but overall, it’s still chilly. Depending on the weather, the cherry blossoms may begin to bloom near the end of the month.

Visiting South Korea in April

This is one of the best times to visit, when the cherry blossoms are likely to be in full bloom. However, the most popular destinations are busy. Additionally, the yellow dust from the Gobi Desert often covers South Korea at this time — people with allergies may want to avoid visiting in April.

Visiting South Korea in May

This month features warm, pleasant temperatures and plenty of sun. It’s an excellent time to try outdoor activities, such as climbing Mount Hallasan on Jeju Island. Do be aware, however, that the cherry blossom bloom will be completely over by May.

• Yeon Deung Hoe Lotus Lantern Festival in Seoul (beginning of May): Entertainment, a parade and a procession of lanterns light up the Seoul streets.

Visiting South Korea in June

Crowds tend to die down in June, and popular attractions become less crowded. The caveat is that the upcoming monsoon season means rain is very common during this time of year.

Visiting South Korea in July

July is peak monsoon season, so we don’t recommend visiting then. Additionally, the temperatures are very high with lots of humidity. This is one of the worst months to visit.

Visiting South Korea in August

August is very hot and sunny, making it the best time to visit the beaches. However, restaurants, shops and popular sites will be crowded. South Korean schools are on break and there is a surge in domestic travel.

Visiting South Korea in September

The crowds dwindle a little as the schools head back into session. The weather is still very hot, and South Korea can sometimes be hit by typhoons, which deliver rainfall for a couple of days at a time. Chuseok often falls this time of year, so it’s best to avoid that week.

Visiting South Korea in October

This is one of the best months to visit — the weather is comfortably warm, making it pleasant for outdoor activities. Toward the end of the month, mountain ranges in the north start to show signs of autumnal hues as the leaves begin to change.

• Busan Fireworks Festival (October): Fireworks light up the sky and a laser light show dances among the stars at Gwangalli Beach.

Visiting South Korea in November

Temperatures this month are generally pleasant, though they start to get chilly toward the end of the month. It’s the best time to see the bright autumn leaves, particularly at the beginning and middle of the month.

• Seoul Lantern Festival (November): Large, bright lanterns are set in the Cheonggyecheon Stream in Seoul.

Visiting South Korea in December

We wouldn’t recommend December for a visit, as the temperatures can be quite cold. The weather isn’t as icy as January, but Seoul in particular can be frigid later in the month.

• Seongsan Sunrise Festival (New Year’s Eve): Concerts, fireworks, campfires and other festivities kick off the celebration as festivalgoers await the first sunrise of the New Year on Jeju Island.

The Best Time to Visit Seoul

The best times to visit Seoul are during the spring (March to May) or fall (September and October). These months are generally considered the high season and for a good reason. With spring comes the delicate blush-colored blooms of the cherry blossom trees, while fall foliage makes the city glow with fiery reds, oranges, and yellows. Winter and summer have their charms but are not for the faint of heart, as temperatures plummet and soar, respectively.

No matter when you choose to visit, use this guide to help you delve into genteel temples, sprawling palaces and historical hanok houses juxtaposed with cutting-edge technology, a renowned food scene , and innovative architecture and design.

The Weather in Seoul

Each of the four seasons is distinct in Seoul. Winter can be bitterly cold, with icy blasts sweeping down from Siberia. Spring temperatures range from 50 to 70 degrees F, perfect for frolicking amid the pink blossoms of the cherry trees. Summer is hot and extremely humid, driving many Koreans into the city’s thousands of air-conditioned coffee shops. Keep in mind that June through September is also typhoon season, with high rainfall and a chance of heavy storms. Fall brings a return to mild weather ranging from 50 to 80 degrees F and makes for an excellent time to explore the many hiking trails within the city limits.  

Peak Season in Seoul

Boasting the most agreeable weather, spring and fall are naturally congested times in Seoul, though school holidays in the summer make it a fierce contender for the city’s busiest season award. However, with the plethora of cafes, museums, and galleries sprinkled near all the major attractions throughout the city, a refuge from the weather is never far away, meaning a visit to Seoul is enjoyable during any season.

The Seoul sprawling metropolitan area has a population of over 26 million.   With that number of people calling the city home, it ensures there’s no real “off” season—most major attractions even remain open during Korea’s national holidays. While outdoors landmarks such as palaces and temples are open year-round, they may occasionally close due to inclement winter weather or summer typhoons.

Though winter can be slightly cheaper, prices in South Korea’s capital remain steady during most of the year except for two main spikes—the national holidays, Seollal, and Chuseok, the dates of which fluctuate annually but generally occur during February and September. During these times, the entire country mobilizes, making train tickets, flights, hotels—you name it—more expensive.

Key Festivals and Events in Seoul

Korea has a deep love of festivals that range from traditional to kooky. Observing everything from history and film to food and music, Seoul is a city that loves a party. No matter what month you visit, you’ll find an event to suit your mood. It's impossible to avoid the citywide festivities and cultural events during the Seollal (the Lunar New Year) and Chuseok (Korean Thanksgiving) holidays.

With Christmas festivities complete and the average temperatures hovering around 25 degrees F, you’d think the crowds would be minimal in January. But this month marks the winter school holidays in South Korea, which adds domestic tourists to the city’s already buzzing population. Seoul can get even more packed and expensive when Seollal falls at the end of January, which it does every few years.

It’s chilly and dry in Seoul in February, but the streets are packed with shoppers and visitors in anticipation of the Lunar New Year, which generally falls this month. Colorful displays in shop windows, performances in city squares, and special holiday menus at restaurants make February a fun time to visit South Korea’s capital.

Events to check out:

• Seollal is Korea’s Lunar New Year celebration, with traditional performances and activities taking place at Seoul’s major royal palaces.

Don’t put your coat away yet! Though spring technically begins this month, Seoul’s northern latitude means temperatures in March linger in the 40s. In recent years, however, warm temperatures have surprised everyone, including the trees, making an early cherry blossom season a real possibility.

• The Seoul International Marathon has taken place since 1931, making it Asia’s oldest marathon. The race begins at Gwanghwamun Palace and finishes across the Han River at the Seoul Olympic Stadium.

April is said to be Seoul’s most beautiful month, a time when cherry blossoms float through the air giving the city a whimsical pink glow. With temperatures mainly in the 50s and 60s Fahrenheit, it’s the ideal time to visit, which also makes it more crowded and expensive. It’s still possible to get good deals, though, since the weather can be fickle, and no one knows exactly when the cherry blossoms will make their highly anticipated appearance.

• Yeongdeunpo Yeouido Spring Flower Festival consists of performances, activities, and exhibitions that take place amidst the cherry trees.
• Held in honor of Buddha’s birthday is the Lotus Lantern Festival (Yeon Deung Hoe) , which has taken place for over 1,300 years, and consists of a vibrant parade that lights up the city center. (Buddha’s birthday is observed on different dates each year, meaning this festival is sometimes held in May.)

May is Seoul’s Goldilocks window when it’s not too hot or too cold, kids are in school, and the rainy season hasn’t yet begun. It’s also a relatively inexpensive time to visit, as there are no major holidays or festivals in the city this month.

• Jongmyo Daeje is a remembrance of Korea’s royal ancestors and includes a parade, costumes, and traditional performances.

June is a weather wildcard, where temperatures can range from the 60s to 80s. It’s also the beginning of typhoon season, meaning rain becomes more of a possibility.

• The Seoul World DJ Festival draws music lovers the world over for a weekend of continuous mixing.
• Though not as widely celebrated as Seollal and Chuseok, Dano is another of Korea’s major holidays and is observed with traditional customs and costumes at the National Folk Museum of Korea.

Let the humidity begin. July is the start of Korea’s hottest and most humid months. If you do plan to visit during the dead of summer, plan outdoor activities in the morning and evening, and schedule indoor visits during the scorching midday heat.

• Cool off by participating in the Sinchon Water Gun Festival—always a crowd-pleasing favorite since July is one of the country’s hottest months.

Korean children have school holidays in August, and you’ll likely find them splashing in one of the city’s multiple fountains and streams. Temperatures peak around 90 degrees F, and August is also one of the rainiest months in the ROK. If the weather doesn’t scare you away, then you should be able to find good deals on flights and accommodation.

• Becoming more popular every year is the Seoul Fringe Festival, bringing both local and international artists and performers to the streets of Seoul.

Chuseok generally occurs in September, making it a bustling month in Seoul. While thousands of people depart the capital to visit their hometowns, thousands more spill in to celebrate the festivities. It’s a crowded and slightly more expensive time to visit, but the fall colors and the festive atmosphere make it worth the trade-off.

• Korea possesses a thriving film industry, with many movies making their debut at the Seoul International Film Festival.
• Traditional Chuseok celebrations are held at the city’s main palaces and temples.

Tourist numbers are relatively low in October, despite it being the time when the leaves begin to show off their brilliant hues. The city’s central focal point, Namsan mountain, is the perfect place for an autumn walk and features panoramic views from N Seoul Tower at its peak.

• The Hanwha Seoul International Fireworks Festival is one of the country’s largest festivals, drawing over one million people to Han River Park to watch the dazzling displays.

Seoul temperatures start to drop in November (think somewhere between 30 to 50 degrees F). Still, this month brings with it fewer crowds, autumn feasts, and the colorful lanterns that make up one of the city’s most anticipated and beautiful festivals.

• Kimchi is omnipresent in Korea, and there’s no better way to get acquainted with the ubiquitous side dish than by making and eating it at the Seoul Kimchi Festival .
• Millions of visitors flock to see the inventive displays at the Seoul Lantern Festival , where colorful lanterns stretch nearly a mile along the human-made Cheonggyecheon Stream winding through central Seoul.

Baby, it’s cold outside. By December, temperatures drop back into the 20s and 30s, which makes a visit to one of the city’s many teahouses or steamy bathhouses a priority. Christmas is widely observed in South Korea, and shops and department stores deck their halls accordingly. Combined with the country’s tax-free shopping program, it’s a busy time of year to visit.

• Korea’s two main theme parks, Lotte World and Everland (just south of Seoul), host Christmas celebrations with decorations, parades, and performances that rival anything produced by Mickey Mouse.

Spring or fall is the best time to visit Seoul. Not only are the days comfortably warm, but the city is covered in spring cherry blossoms or fall foliage, making it one of the most beautiful times to be there.

In a city as big as Seoul, it's always bustling with people. However, the major holidays of Seollal (usually in February) and Chuseok (usually in September) are particularly busy travel times.

The summer months are intense in Seoul. Not only is the weather hot and muggy, but it's also typhoon season. Rainstorms are common throughout July and August, so be prepared to spend the day indoors.

• There is no requirement on the passport’s remainder validity for entry. You may travel to Korea as long as your passport remains valid throughout your stay in Korea.
• From April 1st, 2023, travelers from the USA, Canada, and 21 other countries no longer need to apply for the K-ETA to travel to Korea. This will run at least until 31st December, 2024 and is designed to make it easier to travel to Korea.

• There are large differences in exchange rates so you will need to do some comparing before you exchange a large sum of money. You can exchange USD to KRW easily at banks or money exchange shops in all major tourist areas like central Seoul (Myeongdong and Namdaemun are good places but the Coex Center also offers money exchange. You can also negotiate the exchange rate with the vendor if you think it is too high.
• You can withdraw cash from bank ATMs. Alternatively, use a pre-paid travel card like the one offered by  Wise , which allows ATM withdrawals and payments and works perfectly in Korea.
• Don’t forget to bring a  travel adapter for your electronics and leave plenty of extra space in your suitcase for the many Korean souvenirs and goodies you’ll buy on your tri

The best time to visit South Korea is during the warm spring or fall seasons. The weather is mild and clear, there’s a range of festivals and seasonal activities to enjoy, and you can travel to Korea comfortably.

The best months to visit are April, May, September, and October. These months are all during the Korean school semester, so there won’t be as many local travelers around during the weekdays. However, expect the weekends to be busy as people leave the cities to travel within Korea.

Large public holidays, including  Chuseok (mid-autumn festival) in September / October) and Buddha’s Birthday (May), provides travelers with the opportunity to experience Korean culture and celebrations. These holidays change each year based on the lunar calendar.

Korean Weather & Climate

South Korea is a country that experiences four very distinct seasons, with temperatures ranging from 100 Fahrenheit in the summer to below 0 Fahrenheit in the winter. Each of South Korea’s seasons brings opportunities to see unique natural views and enjoy the different climates in Korea.

Spring has some of the gentlest weather, with light rain and a quick jump in temperature to the 60s and 70s by late March. Summer begins with the rainy season in late June and becomes extremely humid and hot throughout July and August before cooling again in September.

Fall has the best weather in Korea, with many warm, sunny days. Cold winter weather appears very quickly in mid-November and the first snow usually appears by late November. Winter is dry and sunny with the lowest chance of rainfall but is also very cold. Snow isn’t constant, but can fall for several weeks on and off during winter.

Visiting in spring offers the chance to see beautiful cherry blossoms stretch across the country, as well as many other spring flowers that brighten up Korea after a cold winter.

Spring starts in late March with the awakening of the cherry blossoms and ends in early June with the start of the rainy season. South Korea is a country with a close connection to nature, which can be witnessed in the many spring festivals and celebrations that happen throughout the year.

Use the subway and buses to get around the big cities and trains to travel further around Korea without breaking the bank. You can even splash out on a taxi and pay only a few dollars per person when traveling as a group for a few dollars extra.

Hostels and guesthouses can be found for under $50 per night and are perfect for somewhere to rest and recharge. If that’s all you need, save money here and spend it elsewhere.

Do I need a visa to travel to South Korea?

US citizens and tourists from 111 other countries, including Canada and Mexico, don’t need a visa to travel to South Korea. The US government and South Korea have a visa-free travel arrangement and tourists can stay for up to 90 days.

What happens when I arrive in South Korea?

From September 2022 onwards it is no longer necessary to provide any vaccination status or take any PCR or RAT tests. A mandatory health check will be required, but this is only a simple form you can fill in on arrival.

What happens if I get a positive PCR result?

If you test positive for COVID-19 while in Korea, you will need to quarantine for 7 days at government facilities. Travelers who break the quarantine rules are subject to deportation or fines.

Can I travel to Korea if I'm unvaccinated?

Yes, you can still travel to South Korea if you’re unvaccinated. South Korea no longer restricts travel based on vaccination status (as of October 2022).

These 2024 solar eclipse maps will help you make the best decision about where and how to watch the total solar eclipse on Monday (April 8).

It's finally here: Today, (April 8) a total solar eclipse will pass across the skies North America, giving more than 33 million people living in 15 U.S. states a rare view of the totally-obstructed sun, and — weather permitting — a taste of some seriously strange eclipse phenomena .

If you’re wondering where the total and partial phases of the eclipse will be visible, the good news is that almost everyone in the contiguous U.S. will be able to see the celestial spectacle to some extent. But for a more detailed view of the eclipse’s path, take a look at these handy eclipse maps, courtesy of GreatAmericanEclipse.com.

Totality is the moment that every eclipse-chaser lives for: The moment when the moon completely covers the sun’s face, resulting in a brief but eerie darkness in the daytime. The path of totality , shown in the map above, is the path of the moon’s shadow across Earth’s surface. 

On Monday (April 8), totality will begin in Sinaloa, Mexico, then move northeast up to Texas, ultimately crossing 15 states before moving on to Canada. The states where totality will be visible are: Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Missouri, Kentucky, Tennessee, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, Michigan, Pennsylvania, New York, Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine — although Tennessee and Michigan will only be glanced by the moon's shadow.

Viewers MUST be within the path of totality to witness the total phase of the eclipse; if you are off the path by even a mile, you will only see a partial eclipse, and miss out on the spooky daytime darkness. Furthermore, the closer you are to the center of the path of totality, the longer totality will last for you — up to a maximum duration of 4 minutes, 27 seconds in Torreón, Mexico.

Note: Totality is the ONLY TIME when it is safe to view the sun without protective eyewear like certified solar eclipse glasses . You must protect your eyes during the entire partial phase of the eclipse, no matter where you are.

If you live in the U.S. and can’t make it to the path of totality, a partial eclipse still awaits you on April 8. The entire contiguous U.S. will have some view of the partial eclipse, ranging from 99% coverage of the sun just off the path of totality to about 15% coverage far to the northwest of the path.

The map above shows how much of the sun’s disk will be blocked from your location. Watching the partial phases of the eclipse — which last about an hour and 20 minutes before and after totality — means wearing protective eyewear at all times. Failure to do so could result in permanent eye damage, according to NASA .

If you want to experience the celestial spectacle but don’t have a pair of eclipse glasses handy, there are many other ways to safely enjoy the partial eclipse . These include making a homemade pinhole projector , using a pasta strainer to project the shadow of the moon onto the ground or watching one of the various eclipse live streams available.

Meanwhile, the map below shows the most populated cities within the path of totality — many of which are expected to be flooded with millions of eclipse tourists on April 8.

The biggest cities within the path of totality include: San Antonio, Dallas, Austin and Fort Worth in Texas; Indianapolis, Indiana; Hamilton and Montreal in Canada; and Torreón and Mazatlan in Mexico.

Solar eclipse maps show 2024 totality path, peak times and how much of the eclipse you can see across the U.S. today

A total solar eclipse  crosses North America today, with parts of 15 U.S. states within the path of totality. Maps show where and when astronomy fans can see the big event  as skies darken in the middle of the day on Monday, April 8.

The total eclipse will first appear along Mexico's Pacific Coast at around 11:07 a.m. PDT, then travel across a swath of the U.S., from Texas to Maine, and into Canada.

About 31.6 million people live in the path of totality , the area where the moon will fully block out the sun , according to NASA. The path will range between 108 and 122 miles wide. An additional 150 million people live within 200 miles of the path of totality.

Solar eclipse path of totality map for 2024

The total solar eclipse will start over the Pacific Ocean, and the first location in continental North America that will experience totality is Mexico's Pacific Coast, around 11:07 a.m. PDT on April 8, according to NASA. From there, the path will continue into Texas, crossing more than a dozen states before the eclipse enters Canada in southern Ontario. The eclipse will exit continental North America around 5:16 p.m. NDT from Newfoundland, Canada.

The path of totality includes portions of the following states:

• Pennsylvania
• New Hampshire

Small parts of Tennessee and Michigan will also experience the total solar eclipse.

Several major cities across the U.S. are included in the eclipse's path of totality, while many others will see a partial eclipse. Here are some of the best major cities for eclipse viewing — if the weather cooperates :

• San Antonio, Texas (partially under the path)
• Austin, Texas
• Waco, Texas
• Dallas, Texas
• Little Rock, Arkansas
• Indianapolis, Indiana
• Dayton, Ohio
• Cleveland, Ohio
• Buffalo, New York
• Rochester, New York
• Syracuse, New York
• Burlington, Vermont

The eclipse will begin in the U.S. as a partial eclipse beginning at 12:06 p.m. CDT near Eagle Pass, Texas, before progressing to totality by about 1:27 p.m. CDT and then moving along its path to the northeast over the next few hours.

NASA shared times for several cities in the path of totality across the U.S. You can also  check your ZIP code on NASA's map  to see when the eclipse will reach you if you're on, or near, the path of totality — or if you'll see a partial eclipse instead.

How much of the eclipse will you see if you live outside of the totality path?

While the April 8 eclipse will cover a wide swath of the U.S., outside the path of totality observers may spot a partial eclipse, where the moon covers some, but not all, of the sun, according to NASA. The closer you are to the path of totality, the larger the portion of the sun that will be hidden.

NASA allows viewers to input a ZIP code and see how much of the sun will be covered in their location.

Could there be cloud cover be during the solar eclipse?

Some areas along the path of totality have a higher likelihood of cloud cover that could interfere with viewing the eclipse. Here is a map showing the historical trends in cloud cover this time of year.

Where will the solar eclipse reach totality for the longest?

Eclipse viewers near Torreón, Mexico, will get to experience totality for the longest. Totality there will last 4 minutes, 28 seconds, according to NASA. 

Most places along the centerline of the path of totality will see a totality duration between 3.5 and 4 minutes long, according to NASA. Some places in the U.S. come close to the maximum; Kerrville, Texas, will have a totality duration of 4 minutes, 24 seconds.

What is the path of totality for the 2044 solar eclipse?

After the April 8 eclipse, the next total solar eclipse that will be visible from the contiguous U.S. will be on Aug. 23, 2044.

Astronomy fans in the U.S. will have far fewer opportunities to see the 2044 eclipse than the upcoming one on April 8. NASA has not yet made maps available for the 2044 eclipse, but, according to The Planetary Society , the path of totality will only touch three states.

The 2024 eclipse will start in Greenland, pass over Canada and end as the sun sets in Montana, North Dakota and South Dakota, according to the Planetary Society.
