Estimated time of arrival (ETA) is the time when a vehicle, ship, aircraft, or cargo is expected to arrive at a particular place.

For example, a particular cruise bus may have an ETA calculated based on the expected average speed on a particular road. The travel distance is simply divided by the speed to roughly estimate the arrival time. This method does not consider any unexpected events (such as car accidents on the road or bad weather conditions) that may occur on the way to the driver's destination.

Let's assume we are driving home with friends from a winter vacation in the mountains.

The distance to our home city is 850 km .

We are driving with an average speed of 110 km/h .

We will make three short 15-minute breaks and 1-hour long dinner break, which gives:

Total time of breaks = 3 × 15 min + 1h = 1h 45min

We will start the trip on the 21 February 2018 at 10:00 am.

Now, the most interesting question – when will we be at home? Let's calculate the total drive time:

How do I calculate mileage of my vehicle?

To calculate the mileage of your vehicle, follow these steps:

  • When refueling, note the initial odometer reading and the amount of fuel you're filling.
  • When you stop for fuel again, note the final odometer reading .
  • Subtract the initial odometer reading from the final reading and divide the difference by the amount of fuel used.

Assuming you drive for 8 hours in a day at 60 mph, with 15 min breaks every 2 hours and an hour-long lunch break in between, you can drive 390 miles . To calculate this answer, follow these steps:

How Do I read the Results?

Total actual traveling time.

The total traveling time is the actual amount of time the trip takes from your departure city to your final destination, according to your itinerary. This calculated time takes into account changes in time zones, time spent in transfer cities and daylight saving time (DST).

Clock changes

This indicates the difference in local time between the departure city and the arrival city. If the results are shown with a minus sign (–), you have to set your clock back the given amount of hours. If this result includes a plus sign (+), set your clock forward the indicated number of hours.

Apparent traveling time

The apparent traveling time is the difference in local time between the departure city and the arrival city without taking into account the change of time zone. For example, if you leave Los Angeles at 09:00 (9:00 am) and arrive in New York at 18:00 (6:00 pm), then the apparent traveling time is 9 hours. However, the actual traveling time is only 6 hours, because you subtract the time difference between the cities, which is 3 hours.

Total distance

The calculated total distance is the total distance traveled from departure city to arrival city, which includes all transfer cities. The distance is displayed in kilometers or miles. You can change this in the settings .

Average traveling speed

The average traveling speed is estimated based on the time of departure and arrival given in the travel itinerary. The average traveling speed does not take stop-overs into consideration; it is calculated as if you keep moving continuously.

Current time and weather

This information displays the local time and weather conditions in the departure and arrival cities at the time you calculated the results. As time and weather changes, go to our World Clock to get the current time and weather information, as well as the weather forecast for your departure or arrival city.

Sunrise and sunset

The local times for sunrise and sunset in the departure and arrival cities are based on the time when the upper part of the Sun becomes visible above the horizon, while sunset is when the last part of the Sun is about to disappear below the horizon. Hills or mountains are not taken into consideration.

Length of day

The time table

The time table breaks down the travel itinerary from the start destination to the end destination, including all transfer cities if applicable. The Time since column indicates the accumulated total amount of time spent so far in each part of your itinerary, which totals to the total traveling time. The columns located under Local time in show the local times in all of the selected cities at each step of the itinerary. The times highlighted in bold correspond to the departure and arrival times located in the Event column.

The map shows the shortest possible path between the selected cities, but the actual route is usually longer because flights do not always follow the shortest route. The map projection makes land and oceans much wider near the south and north poles. The heading/course/bearing during a flight varies in most cases.

Estimated Time of Arrival (ETA)

The estimated time of arrival is the time at which any cargo, airplane, ship, or vehicle is predicted to reach a given destination, e.g., a bus company will provide an ETA for its journeys based on the average speed expected for a bus over a specific journey. The distance to travel is divided by the speed and this gives an approximate estimate of the time the bus will arrive. Of course, this does not allow for unpredictable events that may happen during the course of a journey, e.g., accidents, breakdowns, poor weather, etc.

ETA Calculation Example

Imagine that you've been on vacation at a spot 600 miles from your hometown. You are expecting to keep up an average speed of 60 mph on your journey home, and you have built five 15 minute rest breaks into your schedule, so 75 minutes (1 hour 15 minutes) in total. You plan to set off on August 30, 2020, at 2 PM. With this information, we can find out your ETA by taking total drive time (total distance divided by average speed plus total time spent on stops) and adding it to your time of departure, thus:

600 miles / 60 mph = 10 hours + 1 hour 15 minutes breaks = 11 hours 15 minutes

2 PM + 11 hours 15 minutes = 1:15 AM

How accurate is Google Maps Journey time?

I have been doing quite a bit of work with businesses and government organisations on how to use Google Maps in real time and in particular the predictive Journey times and Estimated time of Arrival (ETA) functionality available through the Google Maps APIs .

One question that always comes up is how accurate the journey times are. So, I decided to put Google Maps to the test to find out just how reliable it is.

6 ways to use location intelligence in your business

Testing the accuracy of Google Maps journey times

Google does not provide much documentation on the actual accuracy of their journey times, so it often comes down to the potential user to test this for themselves. Having used Google Maps for my own in-car navigation for a few years, I believe the predicted journey times are indeed very accurate. I would quite often let the person at the other end of my journey know my ETA and — bingo — arrive at that exact time. However, I had not validated the accuracy of the journey times. This is exactly what I have been doing over the last couple of months.

Over the past two months, I have noted the predicted journey time at the start of any car trip and measured this against the actual time. Having completed the analysis, I can confirm that, as expected, the Google Maps journey times are very accurate. Below is a summary of my findings.

Google Maps journey time analysis and findings

To undertake the analysis, I would enter my route into Google Maps, note down the predicted journey and arrival times and compare these to the actual times. I tried my best to stick to good driving behaviour, speed limit etc. to make sure the results were as representative as possible.

I conducted 56 individual trips with an average distance of 18 miles and journey time of 32 minutes. The trips were mainly from my house in Hampshire to locations in the South of England. I spent an average amount of each journey on motorways, A and B roads, with the odd country lane thrown in for good measure. I also recorded the traffic conditions based on the Google Maps navigation app and if the whole route equaled green, orange or red traffic. The majority of my trips were in green or orange, but I did have some with red traffic for comparison.

Considering the number of journeys I undertook and their average time and distance, I think an average of 1.8 min out of predicted journey time is a very good result. This gives me a lot of confidence about the accuracy of Google Maps journey times. It also gives me a lot of confidence that the technology we are offering to our customers is the best and most accurate there is.

One thing to note is that the journey time accuracy went down based on the amount of traffic on the route and the distance travelled. This is expected as those two variables make predicting journey times much harder. However the accuracy does not fall by a significant amount and my confidence in Google’s journey accuracy stays high even when undertaking long trips in traffic.

One further thing to note is I excluded from the results any trip that had an unpredictable incident such as a car crash, although there was only one such incident over my trips.

How does Google Maps work out journey times?

Google calculates journey time by measuring the distances between your two chosen points, and applying any speed limits that are in place on the route to provide a perceived average speed for the journey. This is then used to compute the forecast arrival time at the destination.

Crucially, however, Google Maps also layers over additional live, real-time data to ensure that these trip times are as accurate as possible. Data is sent anonymously to Google from Apple of Android smartphones that have Google Maps open, or from any Android device that shares location information. This data is then used to provide real-time updates on traffic congestion and incidents, which is then taken into account alongside the distance and typical journey time to provide a more reliable and realistic estimate.

The evolution of Google Maps journey time predictions

Google Maps journey time predictions have evolved to the point where they can now give highly accurate real and predictive journey times, even over long distances and in rush hour traffic conditions. These journey times have a wide range of uses, not only in the consumer world to help people navigate and understand when they will arrive at their destination but also in business and government to help improve customer service and plan new infrastructure.

I believe the journey times provided by Google Maps are the most accurate available in the UK and Europe, and most probably in the world. This information can help businesses and government services improve the services they provide and do so in a much more cost effective manner. I will be exploring some of these use cases and how Google predicts its journey times in subsequent posts.

'Coordinated Lunar Time': NASA asked to give the moon its own time zone

The White House wants the moon to have its own time zone.

On Tuesday, Arati Prabhakar, the head of the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy (OSTP), asked NASA to establish a unified standard time for the moon and other celestial bodies.

Prabhakar asked the space agency to coordinate with other government agencies to come up with a plan to create a Coordinated Lunar Time (LTC) by the end of 2026.

Time moves quicker on the moon

Time moves quicker (by 58.7 microseconds) every day on the moon relative to Earth because of the different gravitational field strength on the moon, the memo said.

"The same clock that we have on Earth would move at a different rate on the moon," Kevin Coggins, NASA's space communications and navigation chief, said in an interview with Reut ers .

The LTC would provide a time-keeping benchmark for lunar spacecraft and satellites that require extreme precision for their missions.

"Think of the atomic clocks at the U.S. Naval Observatory (in Washington). They're the heartbeat of the nation, synchronizing everything. You're going to want a heartbeat on the moon," Coggins said.

Synchronized time and lunar missions

In 2017, NASA formed the Artemis  program, to re-establish crewed lunar missions. The space agency aims to establish a scientific lunar base that could help set the stage for future missions to Mars. Dozens of companies, spacecraft and countries are involved in the effort.

An OSTP official told Reuters that without a unified lunar time standard it would be challenging to ensure that data transfers between spacecraft are secure and that communications between Earth, lunar satellites, bases and astronauts are synchronized.

Discrepancies in time also could lead to errors in mapping and locating positions on or orbiting the moon, the official said.

"Imagine if the world wasn't syncing their clocks to the same time - how disruptive that might be and how challenging everyday things become," the official said.

King Charles III opens parts of Buckingham Palace, Balmoral Castle for 1st time

The room off Buckingham Palace's balcony will now be accessible to the public.

King Charles III is giving the public a never-before-seen glimpse into two of the most iconic royal residences, Buckingham Palace and Balmoral Castle .

Starting this summer, members of the public will be able to tour the East Wing of Buckingham Palace for the first time, according to an announcement Wednesday from the Royal Collection Trust.

The tour will include a stop in the room that members of Britain's royal family gather in before stepping out on the palace's famous balcony, where they wave to the public after major events like coronations , jubilees and the annual Trooping the Colour .

The tour, which will run daily in July and August, comes after five years of renovations to the East Wing to "upgrade the historic building's infrastructure, improve access and preserve it for future generations," according to the Royal Collection Trust.

Also opening this summer for the first time is Balmoral Castle, the royal family's estate in Scotland.

Balmoral Castle was particularly beloved by the late Queen Elizabeth II , who spent the final months of her life there in 2022.

Starting on July 1, guided tours of the interior of the castle will begin for the first time ever, according to the castle's website .

The tours will run through Aug. 4, and are only open to 10 people at a time. Tickets for the Castle Interior Tour start at just over $120 per person, according to the website. Tickets for the Castle Interior Tour with Afternoon Tea, which is offered to adults only, will cost around $190 per person.

"You will learn about the origins of the Castle and how it has been loved by generations of the Royal family," the description for the tour reads. "Travel through time from the purchase of the Balmoral by Queen Victoria and Prince Albert, through to present day, where you can see how rooms within the Castle are used today by their Majesty's The King and Queen and other members of the Royal Family."

Starting in early May, the castle's gardens, exhibitions and grounds will also be open to the public on a daily basis through mid-August, as they are each summer, according to the castle's website .

Tickets for tours of the grounds, gardens and exhibitions at Balmoral can be purchased online, with prices ranging depending on group size, age and tour experience.

Credit Card Swipe Fees Are Going Down. Are Points Going With Them?

A new agreement by Visa and Mastercard to reduce fees charged to merchants may drain the lucrative rewards that grant free travel to many credit card users.

On Tuesday, the largest credit card companies in the United States reached an agreement with merchants to reduce the so-called swipe fees retailers pay for accepting credit card payments, potentially saving the retailers $30 billion.

These fees also help fund the credit card rewards programs that many travelers redeem for things like free flights and hotel stays, leading points hawks to wonder: Are loyalty programs at risk?

Here’s what we know so far about the changes.

What are the terms of the deal?

Last year, credit card payments generated an estimated $72 billion in fees paid by merchants, which are generally passed along to customers in the form of higher prices. For nearly 20 years, merchants have been seeking reductions in the fees they pay Visa and Mastercard for handling transactions where the cards are used.

The proposed settlement , awaiting approval in a federal court, reduces and caps those fees for five years. It would also allow merchants to potentially charge consumers more based on the card they pay with. For example, a person paying with a premium card like the Chase Sapphire Reserve, which costs $550 a year, could be charged more than someone paying with the more basic Chase Sapphire Preferred card, with an annual fee of $95.

Why does it matter?

The majority of the fees collected go back to the banks that issue the credit cards. Those banks have used the funds to push premium credit cards that offer loyalty points, which can be redeemed for free travel and other perks. The cards with the biggest benefits tend to be those that charge higher swipe fees.

While the reduction in the fees collected sounds small — averaging at least .07 percent — they represent an estimated $30 billion over the five-year term of the deal, which banks could try to make up by reducing points perks.

“It’s reasonable to think that,” said Brian Kelly, the founder of the Points Guy , a news site devoted to maximizing credit card points.

While he speculated that banks will be able to “find other ways to make up the difference,” he acknowledged that a points squeeze could emerge.

“Opportunities to earn probably aren’t going to flourish,” he said.

The idea that merchants could charge more to the holders of premium, perks-rich cards, which are expensive, might also deter consumers from using them. Some experts question the viability of the practice given the potential for consumer backlash.

Is the new agreement related to the Credit Card Competition Act?

The legal actions that led to the new credit card agreement date back to 2005. But the newer Credit Card Competition Act , proposed in 2023, aims to introduce more competition in the credit card payment system. By creating a cheaper alternative pipeline for processing payments, the proposed legislation is seen as a greater threat to rewards programs.

Responding to the just-announced agreement between the credit card companies and retailers, Senator Dick Durbin, Democrat of Illinois, and the lead sponsor of the Credit Card Competition Act, released a statement urging the act’s passage.

“I fear that this deal only provides temporary concessions negotiated by a few lawyers behind closed doors,” he said in the statement.

Other experts said the agreement may ease the pressure on Congress to pass the act.

“I think it’s a way for Visa and Mastercard to show that they are making a good-faith effort to help out merchants by lowering the fees they’ve been complaining about for 20 years, and hopefully enough to let senators know they’re doing their part,” said Chris Hassan, the social media and brand manager for Upgraded Points , a website that tracks credit card benefits.

Separately, the proposed merger between Capital One and Discover, which is pending federal approval, could introduce more competition among credit cards and potentially improve rewards for holders of those cards.

What should I do now?

The points and payments systems won’t change until the agreement is approved, which is expected in late 2024 or early 2025, according to a news release from Mastercard.

But the topic should remind travelers of the reality of playing with points: The rules always change. Values tend to fall as redemption levels rise, which companies issuing these currencies are free to adjust at will.

If you have points, spend them, say experts like Sara Rathner, a travel and credit card specialist at the financial website NerdWallet . “They’re not a trophy to dust and admire.”
