Misericordia University unveils twin tour with interactive 3D CampusBird map

misericordia virtual tour

From CampusBird Blog

Misericordia University is courting potential applicants online with a “Walking’ Tour” of campus that replicates its on-site offering. The twin tour links descriptions and photos of university highlights to  Misericordia University’s interactive 3D map  from CampusBird.

“Our admissions department loves that prospective students who visit Misericordia online can make all the same stops and get the same information they would get otherwise while visiting our campus in person,” said Steve Filipiak, Misericordia Web Content Coordinator.

Staff can easily alter the on-screen view of the more than one dozen sites to match any changes in the on-campus version. Departments such as Alumni Relations and Campus Safety can tailor the map and news for short-term special events such as the “Under the Stars” summer concert series and commencement ceremony.

CampusBird is available on computers and mobile devices. The 3D color illustration overlays a Google Street map. Directions to Misericordia are available from most locations nationwide. Pinpoints identifying campus features link to pull-down menus categorized into academics, athletics, housing, dining and more.

Misericordia was founded in 1924 by the Religious Sisters of Mercy with the guiding principles of Mercy, Service, Justice and Hospitality. More than 40 percent of the 3,200-member student body major in the health and medical science programs. A first-year medical-imaging major as well as a professor and student who are conducting cancer research appear in videos accessible through the CampusBird information portal.

Inside panoramic views of McHale Hall, a co-ed, first-year dorm, provide perspective on the 10-foot by17-foot, two-person rooms and the popular fireside lounge. Although there’s nary a wave in sight, sand volleyball players and sunbathers hit the so-named McHale Beach. CampusBird also shares a peek at the five-student suite arrangement in MacDowell Hall, the newest dormitory on the upper campus.

Other CampusBird options include 3D models and 2D overlay renderings and custom street views. Misericordia chose to show off gracious homes that house upper classmen on and off-campus.

“Working with CampusBird really kept things focused, as we launched our campus map in tandem with a complete site-wide redesign,” Filipiak concluded. “As a result, we have a better-informed visitor who can easily tour the university and learn about various aspects of campus.”

CampusBird Maps are currently in place at 125 college preparatory and higher education institutions in the U.S. and Canada.

Misericordia University hosts virtual African American artist tour and ‘Raisin in the Sun’ reading

Misericordia University hosts virtual African American artist tour and ‘Raisin in the Sun’ reading

From a press release :

Misericordia University in Dallas is currently hosting an exhibition titled “The Fine Print,” which highlights the experimental styles of contemporary African American printmakers, in the Pauly Friedman Art Gallery until Sunday, March 14.

Curated in partnership with Curlee Raven Holton of Raven Fine Art Editions in Easton, the exhibition features 23 artists, including Benny Andrews, Robert Blackburn, Elizabeth Catlett, David C. Driskell, and Faith Ringgold.

Holton’s piece titled “Hands Up, Nimbus” is pictured above. Prints can be purchased here .

“The work was created as a tribute to young black men. There is a trace of my own blood at the lower corner of the shirt’s pocket. This denotes the residue of violence seen and unseen. The golden halo represents the honoring of the subject’s value. Before halos were religious symbols, they represented heroism and valor as well as the unique value of each individual. The primary image is done in watercolor, with the hands in gray with white space. This segmentation of the image refers to barriers that perpetuate black vs white encounters,” he said.

Due to the coronavirus pandemic, the Pauly Friedman Art Gallery on campus (301 Lake St., Dallas) is closed to the general public. To schedule a private viewing, visit misericordia.edu or call 570-674-6250.

In lieu of in-person gatherings, the gallery is hosting various virtual events showcasing 29 works that capture excellence and innovation in American art throughout the exhibit in conjunction with Misericordia’s celebrations of Black History Month and Women’s History Month.

On Tuesday, Feb. 23 at 7 p.m., artists from the exhibition will participate in a Virtual Artists Studio Tour. In this live conversation, audiences will have a chance to chat with the artists about their work and about collecting works by African American artists. Feedback and questions asked during the virtual event will be considered as the gallery chooses one of the exhibition’s works to be added to the university’s permanent collection. Registration for this Zoom event can be found here .

On Friday, March 5 at 7 p.m., the gallery will present a virtual table reading of “A Raisin in the Sun” by Lorraine Hansberry , the first African American woman playwright to have her work performed on Broadway in 1959. The 2014 Broadway revival of “A Raisin in the Sun” won three Tony Awards. All are welcome to view this performance via Zoom by registering here .

Set on Chicago’s South Side, the plot revolves around the divergent dreams and conflicts within three generations of the Younger family: son Walter Lee, his wife Ruth, his sister Beneatha, his son Travis, and matriarch Lena. When her deceased husband’s insurance money comes through, Mama Lena dreams of moving to a new home and a better neighborhood in Chicago. Walter Lee, a chauffeur, has other plans – buying a liquor store and being his own man. Beneatha dreams of medical school. The tensions and prejudice they face form this seminal American drama. The Younger family’s heroic struggle to retain dignity in a harsh and changing world is a searing and timeless document of hope and inspiration.

The cast will feature local students and community actors. Misericordia’s own Dr. Richard Hancuff will present a brief introduction on racial equity in housing. This event is being held in partnership with the Misericordia University Players and the Gaslight Theatre Company of Wilkes-Barre.

Visit misericordia.edu or contact gallery director Laine Little at [email protected] for more information.
