Reasons to buy, reasons to avoid.

The “E” in its name stands for Extreme Spec, meaning it’s designed to help average golfers to the extreme. This ultra-premium 460cc driver is also crammed with technology, such as an extreme low-and-rear CG position that produces an extremely high MOI of 5600 g/cm2 – that’s the highest MOI driver Tour Edge has ever made, making it one of the  most forgiving drivers  around.

There are also multiple other technological aspects, like a Flight Tuning System and thin titanium ridgeback spine running from the center of the face through the crown which, in testing, produced an easy to flight trajectory, as well as a solid impact sound and long distance. 

Along with the performance, the E723 has a very long crown from face to rear, with the graphics of the crown, a black stripe down the middle flanked by a weaved dark graphite pattern, framing the ball nicely. Overall, we thought it was pleasing to the eye, especially as the face seems nice and tall and the clubhead felt rather substantial through our swing.

Tour Edge Exotics C723 Driver

Whereas the E in the E723 stands for Extreme Spec, the C in the C723 stands for Competition Spec, meaning this driver is for better players. However, out of the box, we found it to be one of the most adjustable player’s drivers on the market, with this low-spin model loaded with tech. 

Beginning with the aesthetics, which we thought were stealthy and amazing to look at when addressed behind the ball. The darker band down the middle nicely frames the alignment you want to swing through, with the thin titanium ridgeback spine running from the center of the face and crown. 

Performance-wise, we found there to be a lot of adjustability options and, when we swapped the standard 5-gram front and 15-gram rear weights, it resulted in a change of around 300rpm of spin. We could also slide the rear CG weight to one of five positions which influenced a fade or draw up to seven yards. On the course, this driver felt extremely solid with respect to feel and impact sound - a box that all the  best golf drivers  tick.

Tour Edge Exotics E722 Driver

The Tour Edge Exotics E722 driver was designed to offer golfers the ultimate in playability and forgiveness. Keying that performance is a low, deep CG placement that has been made possible by a lightweight carbon fiber crown and a 30-gram fixed weight in the back of the sole. That combination offers incredibly high MOI, which results in more accurate golf shots regardless of strike location.

Do not assume, however, that the E722 driver is a one-trick pony. Certainly, the forgiveness it provides is a standout feature, but this driver also delivers when it comes to ball speed. Tour Edge’s Diamond Face VFT clubface design utilizes 61 diamond-shaped sections that vary in thickness. The diamonds, which Tour Edge says act as mini trampolines, deliver consistent ball speeds from strike locations across the clubface.

Tour Edge also has worked hard to improve the sound and feel of the E722 driver by utilizing an internal ribbing system to diffuse sound at impact. Additionally, while the E722 might be described as a game improvement driver, it also offers the customization that better players want. The E722’s adjustable sleeve features eight settings that allow golfers to adjust loft by +/- 2 degrees and lie angle by 3 degrees to help anyone achieve exactly what they’re looking for in terms of launch, spin, and shot shape.

Tour Edge Exotics C722 Driver

While the Tour Edge E722 driver was built for forgiveness, the Exotics C722 is a different animal, as it was built to give better players the speed and workability that they’re looking for in a driver. The C722 features a compact, 445cc profile and a deep clubface, providing a look that lower-handicap golfers love to see in the playing position.

The C722 also offers tremendous customization. Movable sole weights of five and 20 grams allow players to significantly influence spin and launch. Tour Edge says that putting the heavier weight forward will reduce spin by 300 RPM, while placing the heavier weight back will create higher launch and provide an 11 percent increase in MOI for those who don’t find the middle of the face as often as they’d like. An adjustable loft sleeve with eight settings further allows golfers to achieve exactly what they want in terms of shot shape and trajectory.

In terms of its other key technologies, as is the case with the E722 driver, the C722 also features a Diamond Face VFT clubface design, as 61 diamond-shaped sections that vary in thickness across the face act as mini trampolines to promote faster ball speeds and protect ball speed from the heel and toe. Tour Edge C522 Driver

The Tour Edge C522 driver has been one of our biggest surprises of the year in testing. It's available at an incredibly competitive price point but delivers all of the performance that golfers would expect from more expensive drivers. Most notably in our testing, it proved to be highly forgiving on off-center strikes but also long and consistent in terms of ball flight.

The C522 also looks very good at address, with a profile that inspires confidence without sacrificing the traditional shape that most golfers want to see. Its aesthetics also offer more of a premium look than one might expect at this cost. The C522's impact sound is a bit on the louder side but in an explosive way as opposed to being off putting.

It is worth noting that the C522 does not have an adjustable loft sleeve and it's only offered with one stock shaft option. But for a retail price of $249, that shouldn't come as much of a surprise. That said, while the C522 won't fit everyone for those reasons, it will fit the vast majority of golfers just fine, and at its price it should be a consideration for any golfer who's looking for a solid all-around driver without having to break the bank.

Tour Edge E522 Driver

Tour Edge developed with the E522 driver with slicers in mind. To help those golfers combat that frustrating miss, the E522 has an offset hosel design, a more upright lie angle, and internal weighting that has been moved toward the heel to make it easier for players to square the clubface at impact. In our testing, all of those features combined to effectively do the job, as we found it difficult on the course to move the ball significantly from left to right no matter how hard we tried to hit a slice.

The E522 has other performance attributes as well. It fared especially well in testing from a dispersion standpoint on off-center strikes, and it also offered effortlessly high launch conditions, which will be a bonus for golfers with more moderate swing speeds. The E522 is on the louder, high-pitched side at impact and it doesn't feature an adjustable hosel to utilize for fine-tuning ball flight, but at its highly competitive price point, some sacrifices should be expected.

Best Tour Edge Fairway Woods

Tour Edge Exotics C722 Fairway Wood

Tour Edge has been an industry leader in the fairway wood space for a number of years, and the fairway woods it develops for better players have been especially popular. The Exotics C722 is the latest in a long line of fairways that fit that profile and in our testing it proved to be another gem. Where the C722 stands out is in terms of ball speed. We found it to be extremely long and competitive with anything else on the market.

That speed comes in large part from a construction that utilizes a carbon fiber crown and titanium body, which combine to create a low, deep CG position that promotes speed, as does the C722’s Diamond Face, which helps maintain ball speed numbers from strike locations across the clubface. And in our testing the C722 proved to be surprisingly forgiving. It will also appeal to better players because its more compact shape, deeper face, and forward weighting will promote low spin and workability, and it also features an adjustable loft sleeve that enables golfers to fine tune trajectory and shot shape.

Best Tour Edge Irons

Tour Edge Exotics E723 Iron

The E723 is an ultra-premium, very sleek-looking,  game-improvement iron  that is loaded with technology. The most notable aspect of technology is Tour Edge's VIBRCOR – which is a TPU that’s strategically injected into the hollow body, deep 360-degree undercut pocket to provide excellent feel. 

In testing, we were extremely impressed with the forgiveness on offer. Regardless of where the ball was struck, the VIBRCOR on the back of the clubhead and the Diamond Face VFT, which comprises 92 diamond shapes of three different thicknesses behind the face, meant it was extremely lively on the expanded sweet spot.

At address, we thought that the look was very confidence-inspiring. Most notably, there’s a slight bulge low and an inviting amount of offset, with a thick topline also giving freedom to swing hard at the ball. In testing, it was super easy to hit and the shots got airborne with distance very well.

Tour Edge Exotics C723 Iron

The C723 also features VIBRCOR technology like we see in the E723, but the C723 is designed for the slightly more confident ball striker, with the most notable differences being the smaller clubhead, thinner top line and shorter blade length.

We found it still had full-face forgiveness and ball speed though, with the Diamond Face VFT also present throughout. Again, in testing, the impact experience was certainly very addictive, with the ball springing off the face with a powerful yet subtle sensation. Importantly, it was not too loud or harsh and we thought it was comparable with the  best compact mid-handicap irons . 

As mentioned, it is slightly smaller at address, but Tour Edge have constructed the C723 out of high-strength, military grade maraging steel. This helps make way for a significantly thinner face, the thinnest in any Exotics iron ever and also helped dramatically increase face flex across a larger surface area of the clubface. This meant we were able to eke out a lot of distance when struck properly.

Tour Edge Exotics E722 Iron

Tour Edge believes its Exotics E722 iron is as good as it gets in the game-improvement category and there is certainly a lot to like about what this iron has to offer. First and foremost, it’s incredibly forgiving. The E722 features extreme toe weighting to create a larger sweet spot and its 360 undercut design allows the face to flex more at impact to not only promote naturally high launch but also protect ball speed on low-face strikes.

The E722 irons also were designed with the Diamond Face VFT face technology that the Exotics 722 driver lineup utilizes so successfully. More specifically, 103 diamond-shaped sections are positioned in varying degrees of thickness across the clubface to promote faster ball speeds from all impact locations. Tour Edge has also utilized TPU in the E722’s cavity to dampen sound and reduce vibration to give golfers acoustics and feel that are softer than might be expected.

It should be noted for those who are interested in the E722 irons that this set features extremely strong lofts. The pitching wedge is 42 degrees and the 7-iron is 27.5 degrees, so golfers who decide on the E722 as their iron of choice will want to make sure they get their gapping right at the top and low end of the bag.

Tour Edge Exotics C722 Irons

Tour Edge’s goal with the C722 was to create an iron that would appeal from a look and feel standpoint to even the most discerning player while still providing incredible speed, launch, and forgiveness. One of the biggest problems you will run into when looking for a complete club set is the fact that they are all made for beginner golfers .

One of the things we love most about this particular Bazooka Golf Club set is that it will work for a beginner golfer all the way to a middle handicapper . 

The Bazooka Tour Edge 470 has a really great set makeup with a mix of fairways and hybrids that will have you set with all the golf clubs you will ever need to excel in this game.

Some may eventually add in a lob wedge , but you are undoubtedly fine to get by without it for a while. 

Shaft Options

The Bazooka Golf Clubs do not have any customizable shafts or shaft options. The woods are going to have graphite shafts, and the irons will have a stainless steel shaft in them. 

Some Bazooka sets do give you the option for graphite in the irons as well, but this will change the price slightly. You will also get a cart bag with the graphite shaft irons, with the steel shafts you get a stand bag. 

The flex is going to be a uniflex shaft that will feel very close to a regular stainless steel golf shaft. 

Look/Sound/Feel

Beginners golf clubs are known for being forgiving and relatively long , but they don’t always have a great feel. This is not the case with the Tour Edge Bazooka. These clubs feel like a traditional cavity back set of irons . If you want to hit a draw or a fade, you can. 

The clubs themselves are easy to hit, but they have a great look to them. Combine that with the styling and design of the stand bag, and you will not just be ready to golf, but you will look like a golfer!

Forgiveness

The sweet spot on the 460 cc driver is quite large. Even if you miss the center of the clubface on the driver, you will get plenty of distance with this golf club. The irons have a very low center of gravity with a wide sole that makes them easy to hit. 

Even the three and five wood have a slightly offset design to help you get the ball headed straight down the middle of the fairway. 

As far as weighting is concerned, the set is a little bit light . If you have a very fast swing speed or are extremely strong, you may want to look into a club set with even more durable stainless steel shafts than these. 

Considering this is a full club set with highly forgiving clubs, including fairway woods and hybrids , the price is pretty incredible.

You will have a hard time finding a better deal than this for the quality that you get with the Tour Edge Bazooka set.

We can’t tell you that the Tour Edge will have anywhere near the technology of something like the new TaylorMade Stealth but you are also going to be looking at two completely different price ranges. 

Overall the technology featured in the Tour Edge Bazooka 470 makes them a very good choice for a large group of golfers. 

Is Tour Edge A Good Golf Brand?

Tour Edge is a good golf brand but it may not be as well known as other golf brands. The Tour Edge company focuses on fairly priced golf equipment for the average player. There is a division of this company that will also work with players who are looking to try and perfect their game and lower scores, but that is a smaller division and those are the Tour Edge Exotics.  

The Tour Edge brand does not advertise nearly as much as other golf manufacturers and that is partly why some golfers wonder if the products are good. If you are not being shown all of the latest releases from a company you may wonder what the reasoning is behind this. 

The good thing about seeing less advertising from a brand is that their marketing expenses are lower and the overall product prices may also be lower.  

Are Tour Edge Clubs Forgiving? 

The Tour Edge golf clubs, especially those in the Bazooka 470 set are very forgiving. The clubs are perimeter weighed cavity back irons. In addition, the fairway woods have large sweet spots and the hybrids have a bit of extra weight to help them pull through the rough to hit a great shot. 

With the shafts in the Tour Edge golf clubs, there is also quite a bit of forgiveness and high launch that golfers will see. If you struggle to get the ball up high enough or have a problem with dispersion, the Tour Edge golf clubs could be a perfect fit for your needs. 

Why Are Tour Edge Golf Clubs Less Expensive? 

Tour Edge golf clubs are less expensive because they have different marketing and business strategies and try to appeal to the golfer that is on a budget. If you are one of these players the Tour Edge brand is good to consider. 

In addition, if you are looking for individual clubs that are not part of the Tour Edge Bazooka set you may be able to get them custom ordered through the Tour Edge website for a very fair price. Many golfers need custom-fit golf clubs and this requires you to purchase something brand new from a top manufacturer. 

Luckily Tour Edge also allows for custom fit golf clubs but the price point is considerably lower. Most golfers can get irons for a little less than $100 an iron which is something that we typically don’t see from custom golf clubs. 

The fact that Tour Edge golf clubs are slightly less expensive should not be something that keeps you from purchasing this brand. The lower price has nothing to do with the overall quality of the product.

These three are the most closely related to the golfer that would be interested in the Tour Edge Bazooka.

Tour Edge Bazooka 370

• Priced lower than the Bazooka 470
• Good set makeup for a beginner

• Shafts are not quite as strong as 470
• Better suited for beginner

The Tour Edge Bazooka 370 is the little brother to the 470. This set will be a bit more forgiving and have a more oversized clubhead design.

If you are a newer golfer and like the complete option that the 470 gives but are not sure you want to spend as much money, the 370 makes a great choice.

These clubs have a very thin face , which will help you get a little more distance than the clubs you are currently playing with. This set includes a Driver , 3 & 5 wood , 4 Hybrid , 5-SW , and a putter .

So the set makeup is similar to the Tour Edge Bazooka 470, except you get one more iron and one less hybrid. It still comes with steel shafts and a lightweight stand bag.

Callaway Strata Tour

• Price is very fair, similar to Tour Edge
• Easy to hit clubs
• Tour model is more for players that have played some golf
• Not for faster swing speeds

Callaway makes quite a few complete club set options. However, the one that is most similar is the Callaway Strata Tour .

The Tour comes in both a stiff and regular golf shaft , so it is geared for the player that a bit more of an idea as to what their game is capable of. 

Just like the Tour Edge Bazooka, the Callaway comes with a 460cc driver and all the clubs necessary to put together a complete easy to hit set.

The Callaway has the name brand behind it, but the player with more experience should look more at the 470 than the Callaway Strata Tour. 

Cobra Speed XL

• Great set for the price
• More expensive than the 470

Last is the Cobra Speed Complete Set . The Cobra is a bit more of a premium option than the Tour Edge Bazooka, and because of that, you will pay a bit more money for it.

The Cobra Speed will have a complete set makeup with two hybrids and two fairways. 

If you are a mid handicap golfer that is looking for a great value with plenty of forgiveness and performance , the Cobra is a great choice. This set will have a better feel than any of the other options in this review.

Tour Edge Exotics Pro 723 irons are the company’s tour-inspired players iron.  It features some forgiving tech but prioritizes workability and feel.

Introduction

Tour Edge is undoubtedly one of the most overlooked OEMs in golf.  Their strategy of focusing on Champions Tour players as brand ambassadors ensures that the company has visibility but not necessarily the sexy brand image cultivated by partnerships with young PGA and LPGA tour stars.  Nevertheless, I’ve found that their equipment is more than worthy of examination and often hangs in the same stratosphere as the bigger names.  Today I’m taking a look at the Exotics Pro 723 irons.

On appearance, everything about the Tour Edge Exotics Pro 723 irons is fairly traditional .  You have a medium-thin topline with minimal offset.  The chrome clubhead has a brushed matte finish on the face to reduce glare at address.  There is modest branding and milling visible on the back of the clubhead.

Of the three irons in the 2023 Exotics lineup, the Pro 723 (above, left) is the most compact , as it is targeted towards the better player.  You can check out my reviews of the C723 (above, middle) HERE and the E723 (above, right) HERE .

Sound & Feel

The Tour Edge Exotics Pro 723 irons deliver on most of what you would hope for from this class of club.  You get a  soft feel from flush contact , with a concise mid-pitch sound.  One might attribute this in part to the small piece of VIBRCOR TPU located inside the cavity behind the sweet spot.

I found balls struck heel or toe felt considerably less soft, giving off more of a boardy feel and a sound that I interpret to mean “practice more, dummy.”  Suffice it to say, the Pro 723 irons offer plenty of feedback regarding mishits and strike location.

Performance

The Tour Edge Exotics Pro 723 irons are tour-inspired cavity backs with minimal forgiving tech.  The performance delivers on the promise of its design.  It is able to produce a variety of flights and shapes, as opposed to the other two irons in the series where the main function is higher, straighter, longer.

This club asks the player to do the vast majority of the heavy lifting, so the question of performance is really more on you than it is the club .  While I wouldn’t say it’s a club that is exclusively for low handicappers, it isn’t going to give you much help if you’re a mid-capper without your A game.

In terms of tech, Tour Edge says that the shape of the clubhead features a “ slightly larger forged cavity design based on tour player feedback.”  This allowed their engineers to push weight lower, adding a bit of forgiveness.  I don’t doubt the veracity of these claims, but I didn’t necessarily notice any added forgiveness relative to other clubs I have tested in this category.

As with the other two models, Tour Edge has really been thoughtful about its stock shaft offerings , providing a number of great options to fit a variety of players.  This one came loaded with a Dynamic Gold 105.

The Tour Edge Exotics Pro 723 irons are a solid entry into the tour-inspired cavity back iron category.  The looks, sound & feel, and performance are all very good.  They represent good value relative to other irons on the market and are worth consideration on that factor alone.

#doublesecret Test drove a TE driver many years ago. Won’t share the distance but it was considerable. My swing couldn’t keep it in play but I’ve always remembered the incredible experience. Then why can’t I remember to test the irons when it’s time for new sets? It’s always the big brands and I think I’m branching out if I try Cobra or Srixon. Anyway, the one negative for me on these irons is I’ve never liked the ‘line design’ like these have and the Taylormade P7MCs. Seem like no name clubs you’d find in Target. But I’ll bet they play just fine.

#DoubleSecret I used a mix of several brands of clubs. TM driver and 3W, Cobra 5W and 7W, custom irons, Cleveland wedges and an army of different oitters. Each had a purpose-distance and accuracy or specific feel, etc. but as I’ve aged, so did the usefulness of all those different parameters and brands. Boiling all of those down to my specific stats I went to Tour Edge and had a set built. (They do do custom work to a point). And they are geared to the senior crowd. I now have a bag of E722/C723 for everything except SW, LW, and that army of putters. The entire bag is now consistent for distance and control, feel, and most importantly, confidence and expectations. Took 10 strokes off and I now flirt with the high 70’s. Won’t be long before my score matches my age! Best clubs ever.

What about the average player

Been using TourEdge FW since the XCG5 – Nothing else comes close for me in terms of consistent performance and value. I currently play with CB Proh irons (2016 issue I think), and EX10 woods, and a E722 Driver. Gave the EX10 driver to a friend. Have a set of E722 irons with KBS graphite that I got cheap from a pal and may try them next year. Love the CB Proh and have 2 sets as these forged hollow body irons perform best for me. One set has Nippon Zelos 7 shafts, the other has “made for exotics” graphite design orange shafts, and leather grip master grips. I’ve not tried the Hot Launch series stuff on course but some of the designs remind me of my favorite Adams Tight Lies stuff. I’ve hit TE forged irons in simulator rooms and they are not playable enough for my swing speed – anyway – TE stuff is excellent across the board, made in the US, guaranteed for life, and uses Bo Jackson as a spokesperson (LOL). If you’re not using TE – You don’t know Diddley!!! – What’s not to like?? #DoubleSecret

Tour Edge is a golf equipment company that tends to do a little less advertising and promotion than other brands in the industry.

The result of this is that you may not know as much about these clubs, but their pricing is usually a little bit less. 

I recently tested the Tour Edge Bazooka 370 golf set, and it seemed like a really fair price for all that was included.

Overall, this set offers tremendous value. It is a great golf set for beginners and high handicappers.

Tour Edge Bazooka 370 Review and Benefits

One of the first things that will stand out about the Tour Edge Bazooka 370 is how reasonably priced it is.

In addition to the fair pricing, I really wanted to see how the distance, forgiveness, and overall ease of use stood up against other complete golf sets on the market. 

What’s Included 

The Tour Edge Bazooka 370 Set comes with 12 golf clubs. You really won’t need to add anything additional to the set. In addition, you also get a golf bag and a few headcovers .

Driver and Fairway Woods 

The first thing I like to look for in these complete golf sets is whether or not the driver is a 460cc club head. This is the current USGA max , and you may as well take advantage of the largest and most forgiving golf club head size you can. 

Players will enjoy an optimized center of gravity and a relatively high launch from the driver. The driver’s head is not adjustable, but it is set at 10.5 degrees, making it a fair amount of loft for golfers still new to the game. 

This Tour Edge Bazooka 370 is not the longest club I’ve ever hit, but it was relatively accurate. I can see this as a good choice for those needing the extra forgiveness. 

The set also comes with a 15 and a 19 degree fairway wood. These fairway woods have a low center of gravity and increase total launch. In fact, I loved using them as an alternative to the driver on certain holes.

Out of the rough, the 4 hybrid or the 5 wood are forgiving enough that you won’t be penalized for having your drive land here. 

Hybrid and Irons 

There is only one hybrid included in the Tour Edge 370 Complete Set. Instead of two hybrids, they have put a 5 iron in play. This is really my one major complaint about this set of golf clubs. Sometimes it’s hard to hit the 5 iron if you have a slower swing speed. 

However, these irons were designed to be more heel and toe weighted. The result is a lower center of gravity and a higher overall ball flight. In addition, these are cavity back irons, so you can expect they offer plenty of forgiveness when hit in the center of the face. 

Outside of the 5 iron (which requires a little extra speed), the overall performance of these golf irons was very consistent. 

Wedge and Putter 

There is a sand wedge and a pitching wedge included as part of the Tour Edge set. You may consider adding a lob wedge from another brand with high spin levels.

These wedges are easy to work with and very forgiving, but not necessarily the most impressive when it comes to spin rates. 

The Tour Edge Bazooka 370 set comes with a classic blade-style putter . The putter has an alignment aid to help with visualization, and the overall feel of the clubface is pretty soft. 

You may not keep this putter forever, but it’s a good start. 

Golf Bag 

The Tour Edge Bazooka 370 set comes with either a lightweight stand bag or a cart bag. The cart bag is only available in the senior set. Both of the bags have plenty of storage, and they come with an 8-way divider top to keep the clubs from hitting each other as you play and practice. 

I like the stand bag a bit better than the cart bag, as it is versatile and durable. The cart bag is nice for storage, but it certainly makes it difficult to walk the golf course and carry it with you. 

Tour Edge Bazooka 370 Pros and Cons

The Tour Edge Bazooka 370 has lots of impressive features. Overall I really liked the forgiveness that this set offers.

It may not provide the most impressive distance technology on the market, but if you miss the center of the clubface, you won’t be punished badly for it. Paired with a forgiving golf ball , you’d be in good shape.

The major negative here is the 5 iron. It’s just hard for most average to slow swing speed beginners to hit a 5 iron with ease.

However, if you happen to have a little extra speed in your game, this 5-iron will likely be a club you enjoy.

He had a great desire to play professionally and realized this dream playing pro-level golf for a short time at the Village Links Gold Club, Illinois .

It was during this stint as a professional golfer that Glod came to the realization that premium brands were dominating the market and the needs of the average recreational golfer on a limited budget were neglected.

Glod’s vision for the company was to create technologically advanced golf products for recreational golfers that want game improvement clubs at an affordable price without sacrificing durability and quality.

Having built the brand into a recognizable brand during the initial 13 years by sticking to its core values of building quality clubs for recreational golfers at an affordable price point, Glod decided to venture into the competitive professional golfer market in 1999.

Venturing into the professional arena was risky as can be attested to by many other companies that tried this before since the club requirements between professional golfers and recreational golfers are vastly different.

The first club to be introduced into the professional market during the 1999/2000 season was the Tour Edge hybrid which was universally accepted by professionals and recreational golfers alike.

Tour Edge was able to bridge the gap as they were already in the market producing high-quality clubs and Glod had experience gained during his time as a professional golfer on what professional golfers require.

After the initial venture into the professional golfer market, requests from professional golfers grew and Tour Edge soon began producing golf clubs for PGA players.

The success achieved by providing golf clubs to professional golfers pushed Tour Edge to start manufacturing custom-built golf clubs by introducing its Hot Launch project.

It’s generally accepted that nine out of every 10 drivers sold come from Callaway, TaylorMade, PING, Titleist and Cobra – the so-called Big Five. It’s a ratio that hasn’t moved much, if at all, this century. Sure, there have been individual clubs that have stood out for a season or two but, by and large, the status quo remains unthreatened.

The Big Five’s domination is so complete that there’s precious little room at the table for the “challenger brands.” Companies such as Wilson, Cleveland-Srixon, Mizuno, PXG and every other company that makes drivers are fighting and scrapping for just a sliver of that last 10 percent of the driver market.

As far as the Big Five are concerned, the challenger brands are more of an annoyance than anything else.

Against that backdrop, Tour Edge’s five straight years of record sales and 33 straight years of turning a profit are, on the face of it, remarkable. At the very least, it’s worth a deeper dive to find out why.

Tour Edge: A Little Background

David Glod started Tour Edge in his garage outside of Chicago in the mid-1980s. A college teammate of Lee Janzen and Rocco Mediate, Glod was equal parts golf pro and entrepreneur. Like any good entrepreneur, he found a large gaping hole in a lucrative market: high-quality, low-cost clubs for the average recreational golfer. By 2000, Glod decided to expand into premium equipment aimed at the better player and in 2005 introduced the ultra-premium Exotics line.

“When Exotics started out, David wanted something high-priced,” says Tour Edge Marketing VP Jon Claffey. “He had the only $400 fairway wood on the market and he did that to get attention. From there, guys like Kuchar and Snedeker and JB Holmes and Brian Gay and a few others chose to play our 3-woods and sometimes our hybrids for no compensation.”

Exotics chalked up 10 PGA TOUR victories over the first 10 years but the last few years have been a bit of a redirect for the company. The value-priced, super game improvement Hot Launch line is still alive and kicking but Exotics has been completely rebranded as a value-priced, premium performance line.

At the same time, Tour Edge has embarked on a Golf Channel ad campaign and has established a major presence on the PGA TOUR Champions.

“We have four Champions Tour guys on staff,” says Claffey. “And we have 100 guys who’ve played us over the last three years for no compensation because our clubs work for them.”

Tour Edge and the PGA TOUR Champions: Filling Another Void

Luck, it has been said, is the residue of design. In 2018, Tour Edge stepped in a heaping pile of good luck when it decided to be a player on the Champions Tour.

“There had been a big void on the Champions Tour ever since Adams left,” says Claffey. “And the very first day we went out there, TaylorMade pulled its Champions Tour program. It was literally the first day we went out there.”

So, with Callaway as the only other OEM presence, Tour Edge decided to plant its flag with the Champions and make it their Tour home.

“Within three weeks, we picked up a dozen players,” says Claffey. “Contractually, there’s a lot more room in their bags for different clubs. At first, it was fairway woods, hybrids and utility irons but that grew into drivers this year. We had 20 different guys try our driver and put it into play and not one of them was under contract to do so.”

In 15 events this year, Tour Edge had more than 500 clubs in play with 45 different golfers. It was the Exotics EXS 220 and EXS Pro drivers, however, that made the needle move.

“You know how hard it is to get a pro to switch drivers,” says Claffey. “A player would come by our trailer on the range and say, ‘yeah, I’ll try this out.’ We’d get them on TrackMan and put our driver up against their gamer. To gain 20 different guys playing our drivers over 15 events? That was eye-opening.

“That’s the whole point for us being out there – that we can go toe to toe with anybody. They were looking only at performance and we won a lot of those battles. And they all stayed in play.”

What About the Big Five?

You’d think maybe – maybe – five straight years of record-setting sales, a growing PGA TOUR Champions presence and 33 straight years of profitability would worry the Big Five.

The status quo is one stubborn mistress. It doesn’t want to budge. What’s more, we golfers really don’t want it to move. And the reason won’t make you happy.

It’s marketing. More precisely, advertising.

The Big Five spend big bucks every year across every media platform you can imagine telling you about their new products. Sure, it’s to entice you with the latest and greatest. But even if you try to ignore it, advertising has an effect. Psychologists call it the mere exposure effect – the more you see something, the more likely you are to have a subconscious positive feeling towards it.

So, yes, in a micro sense advertising is transactional. But in a macro sense, it’s attitudinal. Big Five advertising does want to sell you stuff but more importantly, it’s to remind you they are, in fact, the Big Five. They have the R&D juice, the innovation, the materials and the wherewithal to provide you with the best-performing golf gear on the planet. They tell you that every year until at some point it becomes a baseline fact of life. Callaway and TaylorMade make long drivers. PING makes forgiving drivers. Cobra makes innovative drivers and Titleist makes the drivers more players on Tour use.

Mizuno, Srixon-Cleveland and Wilson? Just watching.

We like to think we’re immune to it but we’re not. Advertising’s subtle and long-lasting impact influences our attitudes and behavior without us even realizing it and it’s why the Big Five sell nine out of every 10 drivers.

And this is what a company such as Tour Edge – and the other challengers – are up against.

A Math Exercise

In MyGolfSpy’s 2020 Most Wanted Driver testing, the Tour Edge EXS 220 was named Best Value with an original price of $349.99 (it’s currently $249.99). It finished fifth overall in carry distance behind the PING G410 LST, TaylorMade SIM, TaylorMade SIM Max D and Callaway Mavrik Sub Zero – all priced between $500 and $550. Overall, the EXS 220 finished sixth in strokes gained, 0.027 strokes behind the winning PING G410 LST. That’s $150 for 3/100s of a stroke gained.

The original Tour Edge EXS driver was named Best Value in 2019 . Out of 24 drivers tested, it was ninth in overall distance and 10 th in carry distance. If your price-value matrix includes dollars-per-yard, consider this:

• The longest drivers ran anywhere from $2 to $2.49 per yard.
• The EXS was $1.26 per yard .

The longest driver in the test, the Callaway Epic Flash, was a shade over 3.5 yards – 10.5 feet – longer than the EXS. At launch, it was $230 more than the EXS. That’s nearly a $66-per-yard premium.

Several other value-priced drivers – the Wilson D7, Sub70 839D, Tommy Armour Atomic and Cleveland Launcher HB Turbo – were all within nine yards and 4/100ths of a stroke gained of the leaders. You’d think with performance that often outperformed Big Five drivers – and with much more attractive pricing – the challenger brands might start crashing the Big Five’s party.

Obviously, that hasn’t happened. The reasons are many. First, if a golfer doesn’t consider a challenger brand when shopping, it never gets to the hitting bay. Second, if a custom fitter doesn’t offer a challenger brand, it never gets to the hitting bay. And third, the retailer has to want to sell a challenger brand or it never gets to the hitting bay.

The Tour Edge Retail Gambit

“Retailers have to understand we’re not cannibalizing their $500 drivers,” insists Claffey. “They worry a guy testing this $250 Tour Edge against a $500 TaylorMade will walk out with the $250 club. They want to sell the $500 club.”

With EXS, Tour Edge is targeting golfers who want performance but have price limitations . Those golfers typically wait for end-of-life-cycle closeouts but Claffey says Tour Edge appeals to golfers who aren’t – in his words – “brand snobs.”

“A huge percentage of golfers out there are discerning customers and care about new technology,” he says. “But they’re not going to pay $600 for a new driver. It’s not in their wheelhouse.”

Those golfers, however, are right in the Tour Edge wheelhouse.

“In our focus groups, we find there are more discerning golfers on a budget than most realize,” says Claffey. “We cater to the anti-brand guys. As many people who play Pro V1, there are as many who don’t because they’re Titleist. We’re the company that’s going to meet you in the middle. Not only do we have something that’s good, it’s half the price.”

Retailers, however, thrive on a common consumer mindset: if something costs more it must be better. The brain simply can’t process the notion that something way less expensive can be just as good. Call it brandwashing, call it marketing run amok or call it just plain dumb if you want but it afflicts the consumer in all of us at some point.

Think you’re immune? Ask yourself if, while reading the previous section of this article, you thought to yourself, “I’ll just wait a year and buy the Callaway/TaylorMade/PING when it goes on sale instead.” Then ask yourself why you thought that. After all, the Tour Edge or equivalent is most likely on sale, too.

How Do You Fight the Big Five?

That’s a million-dollar question right there. You can’t really outspend them and you can’t copy them. If you’re Wilson or Cleveland and try to act like Callaway or TaylorMade, you’ll just look silly.

You can take the PXG approach and charge a premium price and make money on what you sell. You may not move a lot of units but you will make money. Then there’s the Mizuno approach, where you claim the high ground in one specific category and ride that horse for all it’s worth. Or there’s the Wilson-Srixon-Cleveland approach, where you position yourself as premium but offer value in the biggest-selling categories. You get your share and make some money but growth is incremental.

In each case, you’re never going to turn the Big Five into the Big Six or Big Seven – it just doesn’t work that way. You grow a little, you make money for your ownership and then you grow a little more.

Tour Edge is taking a different approach with its EXS and the new Hot Launch 521 series. Trim some margin, offer value at a low price and target your niche.

“There are always going to be people who want to support smaller companies,” says Claffey. “That’s what we’ve been harping on the past few years with our marketing. We assemble in the U.S., we’re a Midwest company going against the industry’s behemoths. We’re tiny compared to these companies but we’re getting market share.”

Units Versus Dollars

Depending on how you keep score, Tour Edge is making market share noise. This past July, when the golf industry set a record for monthly sales, Tour Edge scored a 12-percent market share in metalwoods sold off-course. That’s tied with Cobra, well ahead of Titleist and behind only TaylorMade, Callaway and PING.

That share, however, is units, not dollars. While it’s nice to sell a lot of units, how you sell them and for how much matters. Much of Tour Edge’s July sales came in the form of boxed sets for beginners so the average selling price for those metalwoods was very low.

But still, volume is volume and it can be profitable if you play the game right.

“We’ve never not made money,” says Claffey. “We run this business like a business and we need to make a profit every year. We’re all about getting more units out there. We definitely pay really close attention to where everything is priced and we always want to provide more performance and more technology per dollar than anyone else does.”

At the end of the day, the obstacle that challenger brands face isn’t to take on the Big Five. They know they can’t. Instead, it’s about making money and growing enough to make it a worthwhile enterprise.

“We’re kind of on an island by ourselves with this price-point game we’re playing,” says Claffey. “We sacrificed margin with the original EXS driver so we could get units going and get word of mouth going and have that grassroots marketing take hold.

“People like to talk about how good their products perform and they love a deal. When someone gains performance and they get it for half the price, they start spreading the word. That’s how we make our hay.”

Tour Edge makes exceptional equipment. The EXS Pro driver, 3 and 5 woods are in the northern bag, and the CBX 119 3 and 5 wood with a CBX hybrid is in the southern bag. . I played in college, now scratch in my 30’s. Put me in the camp that would rather support a smaller privately owned business. I have always loved the way their 3-wood looks, but just bought one this Christmas. I probably wouldn’t have bought one if it wasn’t being played on the Champions Tours. It’s just reassuring knowing those trying to make a living are using this club.

As others have said, the proliferation of Trackman like devices should help the companies with smaller marketing budgets, as numbers don’t lie. Additionally as manufacturing/technology improves, but the legal limits on clubs stay the same, hopefully it will become cheaper and cheaper for consumers to buy clubs that reach those legal limits.

I have several Tour Edge clubs, all purchased this year and they are fantastic value and performance is at least on par with the big 5. Currently in my bag is the EXS Pro Driver, which I’ve hit my longest drives EVER, and it is pretty forgiving as well. I also have the EXS Pro 3-wood, which is as reliable and long as any 3-wood I’ve owned. Love the titanium sound and feel of it too.

My favourite club of ALL TIME though (truly) is the third Tour Edge in my bag – the EXS Pro 18° hybrid. It is the longest and straightest hybrid I’ve ever used and I’ve tried quite a few. It regularly gets me out of trouble and I’ve been able to reach several par 5’s in two since owning it and now regularly have either an eagle putt or short birdie putt on par 5’s. If I hit every club like I hit this hybrid, I would be shooting under par every single round.

Tour Edge is definitely worth trying, especially their high-end clubs. Their value line are certainly good too, but probably not that much better than Cleveland or Wilson.

Would say give them a try…I have bought several of their clubs and the service and clubs are well done….sure I have found some not for me and they refunded without a hint of a problem….they are very fast with things like custom lengths and lies also…..I would put Tour Edge 2 stars up on Ben Hogan 5 versus 3 you can trust both of them for great clubs, and Tour Edge has the edge in customer service.

They definitely make good clubs but they will never, repeat never crack the top 5 or so. And I think they’re good with that. Their sales are rising and they’re profitable. It would be foolish to start incurring huge expenses by paying fickle pros to play their clubs. It’s hard to get in person fittings for that clubs, the major golf stores & fitters obviously want to push the big 5. And I’m certainly not doing some online survey & then buying a club based on that. So they’ll continue to be a profitable smaller company, I see nothing wrong with that.

Best 3 wood I’ve ever had. A challenge getting hold of the clubs in South Africa, though. I’d consider buying a driver and fairway woods, most definitely. What about a putter?

I started with Tour Edge 3 years ago. It was a package deal with stand bag. I was fitted for these clubs and have played great golf with them. Now, it is the Exotics Line in the bag, from the Exotics 220 driver down through the hybrids. I will be working this winter in a simulator and towards the end of winter will get fitted for a set of forged irons. On another note, I agree with the above when stated their Customer Service is top notch.

In my bag now are three Tour Edge clubs. The EX 10 4 wood, The XCG7 7 wood and the XCG7 28 degree hybrid. I added the 7 wood and 28 hybrid this year. Both were brand new old stock purchases with new head covers bought at discount prices and each has the Fujikura Fuel stiff shaft.

These clubs have really filled the gap I was having at the upper end of my bag. I have gained carry distance and height with each club, while also reducing my tendency to hook the ball with my long irons. I took out a Titleist TMB 4 iron, Titleist 818 H1 21 degree hybrid and my Titleist AP3 5 & 6 Irons to make room. Also added a Titleist 818H1 25 degree hybrid with the Mitsubishi Tensei Red shaft.

On the other side of the bag I added another wedge.

My goal at the beginning of the year was to reduce my handicap to below 5.

These changes were made to improve my performance. By the way I was fitted for all the clubs that were taken out of my bag.

My GHIN as of this morning is 4.2. I’ve had my best rounds of my life this year, five rounds under par. Three 71s and broke 70 for the first time ever with a 68 & 69.

I am fortunate to have the financial wherewithal and would gladly pay more for performance if needed.

The reason that I’m playing Tour Edge clubs, including two clubs that were introduced 7 years ago, is that they work better for me than anything else I’ve tried.

The Champions Tour guys are better players than me and are good enough to play with probably anything. They are playing for a lot more money than I am too. The fact that many of them are using Tour Edge clubs with no compensation reinforces to me that these clubs work for them and have the performance to keep up with anything on the market.

They could be very good, but their marketing isn’t. Their website does a poor job of explaining the story. They look like high-capper budget stuff. If they want to crack the top-5, they need to continue that line, but also create something like sub-70 where they are making products that are less expensive, but also are more than just high-cap stuff.

In fact, if Sub-70 and TEE hooked up, you’d have a very complete story in the budget category.

I can assure you that Tour Edge’s Exotics line is definitely not “high cap stuff”. There is as much technology built into TE Exotics as any manufacturer out there. I added a full club and a half per iron, with smoother feel, higher trajectory, and straighter flight; moving from Mizuno w/ Fuji Vista Pro graphite to the Exotics EXS irons w/ Mitsubishi Tensei CK Blue shafts (the REAL Tensei, not a “made for” bullsh*t shaft so many OEMs do these days….another TE positive).

Much more to Tour Edge than value pricing and “high cap stuff” (btw, that was a very golf-snob thing to say).

Great writeup John, I hav3 had several dealings with their customer service and have never had any issues. They are super. In my bag, EXS Driver, CBX119 Hybrid.

Good luck getting a response. I had a club that showed damage (my fault) and reached out to TE multiple times via the “Contact Us” on their website. 3 months and no reply. Lost me as a customer.

I had a similar experience with them in that getting in touch with customer service was a huge challenge. This was before Covid had even started.

My several experiences with TE have been the exact opposite of yours.

I can only suggest you CALL them and tell them of your dissatisfaction. I am 100% confident they will respond to your situation in a way that will surprise you, and possibly make you a customer for life.

Bought a full set of Exotics this past summer. Best woods and hybrids I have ever had and the irons are at least equal to anything I have ever gamed. Performance wise there is no doubt in my mind that they are equal to the big five. If a big name ever pushes them, watch out!

I agree with Kansas King that it’s difficult for most of us to fully appreciate how differences in strokes gained affects us amateurs. But we can absolutely trust that the strokes gained numbers published by MGS are far more applicable to us than those of any manufacturer or even the PGA because of the wide variety of skill levels utilized in the Most Wanted testing (and then the further breakdown by swing speed). And because of the more realistic applicable numbers, MGS has demonstrated that overall, there is VERY little difference in performance between high quality products. But that doesn’t mean that there will be little difference in performance for YOU (or me) between models. The only way to tell which one is best is to get fit. Just don’t let a low-price sway you into thinking that a driver is inferior, it’s not! It just may not fit you.

I buy purely on performance. Twice I went to the golf shop looking to buy a 3 wood and a 5 hybrid. I had my mind on a couple of clubs, but I tested a lot of different clubs. I walked out the door with two tour edge exotics because I just literally hit them better and it wasn’t even really all that close. It was shocking. I even bought a proper bucket of balls going back and forth between clubs for a while. It’s no fluke. TE makes good clubs. It’s just a bonus that they’re affordable.

I have limited experience with Tour Edge, but I have generally been satisfied. One caution is that don’t get too excited about them if you are lefthanded. In the Exotics line there is one driver loft option, one fairway wood option and nothing else. The Hot Launch line has more options, but is still limited.. It is mostly geared to the 18+ handicapper. As a lefthanded hooker I only have the option of an offset driver and offset fairway wood (which will only help going farther right). I currently play the HL 4 irons even though I am a 7 handicap. . Being over 70 I wanted more forgiveness and graphite shafts. I can say these are good irons. My only quibble is that the short irons are too chunky.

Nicely written article! I think MGS is one of the few equalizing forces in the world of golf marketing. Numbers are numbers and it’s hard to argue with them. The only thing I think MGS could maybe do a better job of in the future is explaining how big the differences are between clubs. What does 3/100s of stroke gained difference mean on the golf course for a 15 or 25 handicap golfer? The gains in equipment performance really are incredibly small if not nonexistent every year. I think more importantly in some categories it shouldn’t be called gains but changes. Changing the loft isn’t a gain but getting more yards from the same specs is.

I would probably think differently about big OEMs if they used exclusive factories but most don’t with many of the clubs coming from a group of Chinese/Taiwanese foundries. I think golf, while not alone, is one of the most manufacturer centric sports in the world in regards to marketing and influence. I’ve never had an issue with Tour Edge products and hope they continue to do well because they really are about the only quality alternative to the big OEMs in golf shops. I’m a huge proponent of Maltby and DTC clubs but those will generally be only for the golf enthusiast market. I don’t want to take anything away from the big OEMs either because they do make good products that generally do push the bleeding edge of tolerances more than many of the lower cost options. The gains may all be slim if not almost immeasurable but I don’t think they should be ignored if they do exist.

I expect the big OEMs to continue to do big business because of marketing and also the fact golfers can only have so much time to test so many products. Golf shops can’t carry 15 brands of clubs. In reality, spending $500+ on a new driver isn’t a heavy lift for many golfers. Tour Edge will likely be the only budget offering available in golf shops for the next decade.

Tour Edge Hot Launch C524 Iron Review

I had never struck a Tour Edge golf club before the Hot Launch C524 Irons arrived on my doorstep, so I was keen to see if they could perform as well as some of the best irons on the market for a fraction of the price.

Retailing for just $79.99/£65.00 per iron, the price tag certainly caught my eye as many irons in this category sell for far more than double that price. On first inspection out of the box, there were no signs of why that may be from an aesthetic point of view. Each iron was beautifully finished and looked great when I put them down in the playing position. A generous blade length and ample offset let me know that these were irons designed with playability in mind, but overall the dimensions and proportions were excellent and framed the ball nicely.

From a shelf appeal point of view, it is a case of nearly but not quite for me. I am generally someone who appreciates a minimalist approach to looks when it comes to golf equipment and the C524 irons are just a touch fussy for my tastes from the back. I don’t mind a subtle accent color but the bright blue badge just wasn’t for me, although that is just personal preference and some players may love it. I just feel that leaving that black or grey would have given the iron a slightly more premium look and feel.

In terms of the tech, there is quite a lot going on. At first glance, you could be forgiven for thinking that these were a hollow-body construction iron as there is no visual cavity, however, this is somewhat of an optical illusion. The cavity has simply been filled with Tour Edge’s VIBRCOR, which is a high-grade TPU designed to improve sound and feel. 

Additional toe weighting has been added to the set with the intention of stabilizing impact and providing additional ball speed on off-center strikes.

I tested the Tour Edge Hot Launch C524 irons at Saunton Golf Club , using my FullSwing KIT launch monitor and TaylorMade TP5 golf balls, both on the practice ground and out on the course.

Before I get into the launch monitor data, I wanted to give a special mention to the feel attributes of these irons. Impact provided a pleasant lively sensation but there was also a real depth to the strike that isn’t always present in the game-improvement iron category. For me, the Mizuno JPX 923 Hot Metal is still the gold standard in terms of feel in this genre, but quite honestly, when coupled with some excellent turf interaction, the C524 iron is not a million miles behind.

Launch monitor data was pretty strong across the board, with ball speed and distance competitive with just about anything else. With the 7-iron coming in at 29˚ it sits within the higher end of its peers loft-wise but still managed to produce a ball speed of 129.3mph for me with a mid-low launch and spin of 15.5˚ and 5412rpm respectively, which culminated in a healthy carry number of 188 yards. 

I did notice a slight right tendency in flight compared to some other game improvement irons which tend to feature more of a draw bias if anything, and I wonder whether that has anything to do with the additional toe weighting. It wasn't too severe, however, just something to note.

The Hot Launch C524 irons come with a stock steel option of the True Temper Elevate MPH95 shaft in R or S flex, and there are more weight and flex options with the Aldila Ascent PL stock graphite option. There are also three sizes of Lamkin grips to choose from.

Overall, I was very pleased with the performance and feel of the Tour Edge Hot Launch C524 irons, and when you factor in the price tag, I think there is some exceptional value for money to be had. In terms of raw performance data, I would feel comfortable putting them up against anything else in the game improvement category and be very confident they would hold their own.
