10 Bucket-List Fishing Trips in North America

From one end of north america to the other, there's no shortage of great fishing destinations waiting to be experienced by adventure-seeking anglers.

10 Bucket-List Fishing Trips in North America

Every once in a while, I'll stop and daydream about one day taking the fishing trip of a lifetime. Maybe I'll head to Brazil for peacock bass. Or to Christmas Island for a bonefish. Or maybe I'll visit New Zealand to fling a few mouse flies at the legendary trout down under. Or even find my way to Africa to do battle with a tigerfish.

But then reality strikes and remember I don’t have an unlimited supply of cash.

But that's ok, because on the North American continent, there is more than enough exotic adventure awaiting the adventurous angler. Adventure that can be found in spades on one of the following 10 bucket-list fishing excursions.

1. Alaska Salmon, Trout and More: In the eyes of many anglers, there’s no place on earth that can equal the majestic beauty of Alaska, not to mention the sheer variety of fish that anglers can seek to do battle with. From the big king salmon of late spring and early summer to the sockeyes of mid-summer to the silvers of early fall, the world's best salmon fishing is found in the 49th state. Add in 30-inch leopard spotted rainbow trout along with grayling and Arctic char – not to mention some serious northern pike fishing in places – and Alaska gets top billing for any North American bucket list of fishing trips.

2. Montana Trout : The Big Sky State is the hotbed of western trout fishing in the U.S. thanks to its endless miles of quick flowing freestone rivers, a number of epic spring creeks and a world-class tailwater or two. From wild rainbows that inhale dry flies to big browns that like to smash streamers to cutthroats that will devour hopper patterns, there's much to like about this massive Rocky Mountain state. Add in the chance for a bull trout and there's little doubt that Montana is the ultimate Grade-A bucket-list trip for anyone interested in trout.

3. Florida Keys Tarpon: From the mainland south of Homestead to Islamorada and on down U.S. 1 to Key West, the Florida Keys seem like one island and saltwater flat after another. With countless miles of beautiful turquoise water, sandy flats, mangroves, sea grasses and plenty of triple-digit tarpon, this is one of the great saltwater fishing destinations in the world. Especially if you hook up with Megalops atlanticus and spend upwards of an hour bowing to the king of the Atlantic.

4. Texas Bass: Florida has an argument for having the best overall bass fishing in the country. And the action is pretty good in Alabama and New York too. Add in the huge largemouth and spotted bass found in certain fisheries across California and they get a nod. And there’s Mexico, an enchanted land of sunshine and lunker largemouth on beautiful lakes like El Salto. But as good as those waters can be, it's hard to beat the bass fishing action in the state of Texas. From Amistad, Alan Henry and O.H. Ivie in the west to Lake Fork, Toledo Bend and Sam Rayburn in the east, there are dozens of headline-grabbing bass waters in the Lone Star State. And in many of them, there's a real chance to hook up with a double-digit giant, something evidenced by the 566 fish weighing 13 pounds or more – from 66 public water bodies and more than a dozen private lakes, no less – that have been entered into the state's ShareLunker program. But even if you don't hook a ShareLunker, almost every bass lake in the state has plenty of 7-, 8-, 9- and 10-pound lunkers. What's not to like about that?

5. Wisconsin Muskies : They are big. They are mean. They won't quit fighting. And they are hard to catch to the tune one for every 50 hours of fishing for them. But that doesn't mean that muskellunge – or muskies, for short – aren't there because the state fish of Wisconsin are found swimming in good numbers in 660 lakes and 48 rivers, streams and flowages. Difficult or not, if you do hook up with a huge muskie, it's a fight that you'll never forget. Especially if you hook up with a line shredding, lure mauling, rod breaking mega muskie like the current world record from Wisconsin, a 69-pound, 11-ounce behemoth.

6. Beaver Island Carp : If you didn't know any better, you'd probably swear that you're fishing on a remarkably clear tropical saltwater flat somewhere in the Caribbean. But the fleece that you're wearing will quickly remind you that you're wading a flat on the northern end of Lake Michigan near Beaver Island, not somewhere in the Bahamas or Belize. But pay no attention to the shiver you might feel on a cool spring, summer or early autumn day. Because that chill will soon be gone as you cast to, hook and do lengthy battle with a behemoth carp – a golden bonefish as some have dubbed them – that can weigh upwards of 30 pounds or more.

7. Pacific Northwest Steelhead : As one of the top sport fish in North America, steelhead – or anadromous rainbow trout – inspire an almost cult-like following by Pacific Northwest steelheaders looking for another fix of the potion that writer Chris Santella has described as the "tug is the drug." And when those steelhead anglers find it in the form of another smashing take of a huge sea-going chrome rainbow, the experience will leave them shaking with giddiness. And the willingness to be sleep deprived for days, to hike into rugged remote canyons and to wrestle with terrible weather conditions, all on the off-chance that they can experience the wonderful feeling of catching a steelhead all over again.

8. New England Stripers : While Atlantic Ocean striper numbers have dwindled somewhat, there are still a fair number of migrating stripers that move south along the New England coastline each fall. While the migration starts in earnest to the north and continues on down the Eastern seaboard, there may be no better spot in the world to sample the collision of big stripers and vast schools of baitfish than Montauk on the eastern end of Long Island. Catch an early autumn blitz here on a sunny September day – the kind of blitz that causes acres of saltwater to boil with feeding stripers – and you'll go to your grave remembering it all.

9. San Diego Sharks : Shortfin makos might not get the headlines that their great white, hammerhead or bull shark cousins do. But they should. Because they are a great adversary and then some along the Pacific coast near San Diego. Conway Bowman, a longtime World Fishing Network and Sportsman Channel television show personality, actually targets West Coast makos with beefy fly rods. And why not? When you can make a 30- to 40-foot cast, watch a shark eat your fly, see it take off on a mad run of a couple of hundred yards and then catapult wildly into the air, what's not to like about that? Jaws indeed.

Recommended

10. Biloxi Marsh Redfish : How good is the fishing for huge bull redfish – or red drum – that fin in mere inches of the clear wintertime saltwater found in Biloxi Marsh near New Orleans? "This place is insane," said Bowman, mentioned above. Indeed it was since one of Bowman's first experiences in the saltwater marshes near the Big Easy produced multiple fish over 20 pounds and an International Game Fish Association (IGFA) 20-pound-tippet-class world record red that weighed in at more than 41-pounds. "It's the best sight-casting I've pretty much ever done and I guess I've fished for just about everything." With that kind of action – not to mention a steaming bowl of crawfish etouffee waiting in the wings on Bourbon Street in the French Quarter – what are you waiting for?

Winchester Waterfowl Loads

Winchester has been at the forefront of developing high-tech, lead-alternative loads for waterfowl hunters since the non-lead mandate of the late 1980s. That innovation continues today with the company's Blind Side 2 shotshells featuring uniquely shaped Hex Steel Shot, along with its Bismuth loads that have a special buffer to protect the pellets and provide denser patterns. New this year in the Bismuth line is a 3-inch, 28-gauge load with 1 ounce of No. 5 shot at 1,300 fps.

Capt. Scott is a USCG licensed 100 Ton Master Captain and has been fishing and diving the waters out of Ponce Inlet for over 25 years. Capt. Scott has competed in numerous offshore fishing tournaments, winning the Inaugural Fish Stock tournament in 2003 (formally the Striker). My father and grandfather first took me fishing when I was 5 years old. Over the years I have developed a passion and appreciation for the ocean and all the wonders it has to offer. I have caught monster fish, swam with wild dolphins, turtles, sharks and majestic Manta Rays, but most importantly I have experiences and memories that will never be forgotten. Allow me to share my passion with you, your family and friends and help you create the memories that will last a life time. Captain Scott is the owner and operator. Captain Scott is a tournament-winning fisherman, who has been fishing these waters since 1989, and has his 100-ton USCG Captain’s License. Capt. Scott spends several days each week spear fishing, he can see firsthand where the fish are and what various bottom structures actually look like. He also maintains good relationships with other commercial fishermen and captains which provides an excellent opportunity to exchange ideas and notes on recent fishing patterns. If you are serious about fishing or would like to introduce your family to a new experience, please give us a call. We look forward to helping you make the memories of a life time. I started fishing when I was 5 years old. In 1989 I moved to Central Florida to attend Stetson University, became a certified scuba diver, and have been diving and fishing out of Ponce Inlet ever since. Although I have landed plenty of monsters, I now find more enjoyment helping others experience the thrill of landing the fish of a lifetime. Read More

Terms and Conditions

The charter boat SOUTHBOUND is a locally built 40 ft. fiberglass sportfisherman. On all fishing trips, tackle and bait are provided. Anglers need only bring sunscreen, perhaps a camera and whatever you wish to eat or drink. Cooler space and ice are provided.

Your three days of fishing can be any three days of your stay provided I have no prior reservations on that date. You may pick your days when making your reservations.

Generally, I suggest an alternate day schedule, (Mon, Wed, Fri). This allows for a rest day between fishing trips and decreases the chances of consecutive foul weather days.

In case of un-fishable weather a trip is automatically re-booked to the next open day. If there are no open days (due to other bookings) a $350.00 refund will be issued for each trip missed. Un-fishable weather is determined by myself as Captain.

Remember, we are fortunate because we can fish the Atlantic or the Gulf of Mexico. Poor conditions in one usually means protected waters in the other and both provide the opportunity for some quality trophy fishing.

After a day of fishing, the mate will gladly fillet some of the catch for you. Customers are encouraged to enjoy their catch while they are in Key West and are welcome to bring the rest home with them.

Reservations

Reservations may be secured with a credit card or a 50% cash deposit. Cashiers Checks, Money Orders & Travelers’ checks = Cash, however any form of payment that that must be processed by my financial institution must be received no less than 2 weeks prior to arrival.

If a credit card is used, customers must fill out and return the Southbound Reservation form to hold the reservation. The form will be emailed, faxed or mailed upon request.

No personal checks accepted unless received at least 14 days prior to arrival date. In the case of a cancellation, the deposit is refundable with a minimum of 30 days notice.

Accommodations occupancy is for up to 4 people maximum. Check-in is 2 P.M. and check-out is 10 A.M. However, arrival and departure times may be flexible depending upon other bookings. Please call before making your airline reservations. No pets allowed.

Additional days of accommodations or fishing are available barring a conflict with other reservations.

Cash discounts do not apply to Vacation Specials. If a credit card is used as payment, please add 5% service fee.

When Sport Fishing it is customary to tip the mate approximately 15-20% of the charter price. This is not included in the package price.

Fishing Vacations for Anglers

  • By Doug Olander
  • Updated: February 19, 2020

Anytime is a good time to go on a fishing vacation, but certain times are better than others, with various factors in play in the timing decision. For a lot of us, among those factors are costs — costs within our budget to embark on a big adventure for the year, or perhaps costs that allow us to squeeze in a second trip somewhere.

Some fishing operations (resorts and/or charters) offer discounted rates part of the year, most often during what could be termed their “offseason.” You should definitely research the most up-to-date fishing vacation packages available when considering a destination .

All anglers hooked up!

Considering that, I found nine such fishing operations, in prime fishing grounds in the United States and abroad, that do offer bargains part of the year. In some cases, the discount is modest; in others, it’s substantial. Most of the destinations are not necessarily all-inclusive fishing resorts, but some of them are.

Locations of the Nine Fishing Operations Highlighted in this Article

Map of fishing destinations

  • Casa Vieja Lodge, Iztapa, Guatemala
  • Crackerjack Charters, Seward, Alaska
  • Crocodile Bay Resort, Osa Peninsula, Costa Rica
  • Hawks Cay Resort, Duck Key, Florida
  • Keen M International, Isla Mujeres, Mexico
  • Kingfisher Charters and Lodge, Sitka, Alaska
  • No Boundaries Oman, Salalah, Oman
  • Tropic Star Lodge, Piñas Bay, Panama
  • The Zancudo Lodge, Playa Zancudo, Costa Rica

As you might figure, there are reasons for reduced rates, often less-certain weather conditions or the scarcity of some prime game fish species. But in most cases, there are also advantages to visiting in the offseason, some that might surprise trip planners. These are all bucket-list fishing destinations, not cheap fishing vacations. I found that many fishing operations offer no discounted rates, and some feel strongly against that practice. But at the same time, there are a great many more resorts/charters than listed that offer offseason bargains.

The following are listed alphabetically.

1. Casa Vieja Lodge (Iztapa, Guatemala)

Casa Vieja is a premier lodge with nine boats taking anglers out to experience the famed Pacific sailfish fishery here. The nine lodge boats (40-foot sport-fishers and 35-foot Contenders) have recorded days with a year-round average of 15 shots at 80- to 120-pound sails. Blue, black and striped marlin all show up on the grounds as well. Casa Vieja boasts of five-star service and gourmet dining.

Fishing for sailfish off Guatemala

The upsides: Flat seas are typical at this time. Marlin can be excellent and mahi numerous now. The resort is less busy.

The downsides: None, really. Discount is to offset many resort patrons who spend their summer months fishing back home on their own boats. Despite what many assume, the rainy season here doesn’t begin until September, so weather is not an issue. Note: The resort is closed June through October.

Leaping salifish off Guatemala

2. Crackerjack Charters (Seward, Alaska)

Crackerjack Charters has been a mainstay of Seward sport fishing for many years, with a 31-foot Farallon (for up to six anglers) and a 43-foot aluminum boat, custom-built for these waters (for up to 14 anglers). Trips range from half-day salmon fishing in Resurrection Bay to multiday outings in remote waters of the Gulf of Alaska. The silver (coho) salmon, for which Seward is particularly known, are popular targets in July and August. But big halibut, lingcod and rockfish can be caught most of the time.

An aerial view of Seward, Alaska

The upsides: Unlike during peak season, space on short notice is often available. Halibut enthusiasts often find some of the year’s best fishing during this “offseason.” The run to the fishing grounds is often shorter now than during peak season. Finally, Seward is far less crowded than mid-June through August, making it much easier to find reservations for accommodations and restaurants.

The downsides: The weather is certainly more unpredictable in May and, particularly, September. Along with beautiful days are likely to be windy, rough days. Fishing for silver salmon (which aren’t much around in June) and lingcod (closed through June) isn’t available until July. Crackerjack Charters closes from October through mid-April. May is a good month to take advantage of a Crackerjack Charters fishing/hotel combo; during June, you can take part in the annual Seward Halibut Derby

2016 Seward Halibut Derby winner

3. Crocodile Bay Resort (Osa Peninsula, Costa Rica)

A fishing operation and a whole lot more, Crocodile Bay Resort bills itself as a premier sport-fishing and eco-tour resort. Located near the bottom of the Osa Peninsula in the southern part of the country, it’s particularly known for roosterfish , sailfish and blue marlin, plus yellowfin tuna, among other species. The lodge is located on 44 acres of manicured rainforest jungle. For fishing nearshore and offshore, Crocodile Bay offers a fleet of 33- and 35-foot tower express boats and 24- and 25-foot center console Boston Whalers.

The upsides: Summer months are actually the best time, as a rule, for blue marlin and dolphin , and rooster fishing nearshore remains reliable. September is the best month to experience the sensational migration through the Golfo Dulce here of migrating humpback whales, a memorable addition to any fishing day. Temperatures are generally cooler, and more precipitation means the rainforest is at its lush best.

The downsides: Sailfish numbers are down. Also, a flipside of cooler weather now is more rainfall. However, this is not typically all-day rainfall, but late afternoon/evening showers (by which time anglers are often back at the dock). At times, winds can make offshore a bit sporty but still fishable, plus inside the Golfo Dulce calm-water fishing is always available. Crocodile Bay is open all year. Main driver behind discounted rate is the fact that many Croc Bay regulars spend time from late spring into fall fishing north in Alaska or Canada and in general around home. Also, this time of reduced rates is particularly popular with families looking to mix eco-tour activities with fishing.

4. 4. Hawks Cay Resort (Duck Key, Florida)

Situated roughly halfway down the Florida Keys, this large, luxury resort is a gateway to fishing reefs and blue water on the Atlantic or, to the west, vast Florida Bay’s skinny waters. But Hawks Cay offers much more in terms of water-related and other activities. Guests can choose from a variety of rooms, suites and villas.

Hawks Cay Resort in Florida Keys aerial view

The upsides: Less competition for everything in the Keys, including guided/chartered fishing trips; a quieter time, with more couples than families booking late summer and fall; fall is generally an outstanding time to fish these waters, which also tend to be at their clearest in summer and early fall.

The downsides: Late summer can be oppressively humid (if you’re not in the water) and beyond commonplace thunderstorms, there is, into October, a definite risk of tropical-weather systems.

5. Keen M International (Isla Mujeres, Mexico)

One of the best-known charter operations that fishes the fabulous Isla Mujeres sailfishery, Keen M, boasts a fleet of three boats — a 41-foot convertible flybridge and a 36- and 34-foot express. Capt. Anthony Mendillo is widely recognized as an authority on this fishery, and specializes in bluewater fly-fishing.

Isla Mujeres, Mexico, aerial view

The upsides: Summer offers some of the year’s nicest weather and seas to be offshore. Things are less crowded around Cancun, and hotel rates are lower.

The downsides: Mainly that while sailfishing can still be quite productive, it’s definitely slower than in the winter. On the other hand, this is a perfect time for some great reef-fishing action and variety. Summer is also the time to book a trip to snorkel with the whale sharks (or do a full day, with half fishing and half snorkeling). That’s when these waters are home to one of the greatest concentrations of whale sharks and manta rays in the world. Keen M offers fishing year-round, though its three-boat fleet is reduced to one boat during fall.

6. Kingfisher Charters and Lodge (Sitka, Alaska)

This luxury fishing lodge sits atop a hill in Sitka, with balconies offering sweeping views of Sitka Sound. Guest rooms are generous and include full kitchens, though the lodge prides itself on its gourmet meals. Kingfisher Charters anglers fish from 26- to 30-foot Alaska-style cruisers, with enclosed, heated cabins.

Stunning aerial view of Sitka, Alaska

The upsides: May is typically peak time for king salmon , and regulations often allow for more-generous daily limits at this time versus later on. September is prime time for big silver salmon. Both months are great for halibut, lingcod and rockfish — and both months allow skippers to fish for halibut anywhere (Sitka Sound is closed to halibut fishing June through August).

The downsides: One of the few drawbacks is simply that you won’t get the variety of salmon during these months because May is king (chinook) time, but silvers aren’t yet around; by September silvers are thick, but kings are relatively scarce.

7. No Boundaries Oman (Salalah, Oman)

Offering what he calls “the total Omani fishing experience,” Ed Nicholas puts guests in modern lodges and takes them to prime Indian Ocean fishing spots in one of three 33-foot center consoles with twin 200 or 150 Yamahas. The Hallaniyat Islands, 30 miles offshore, remains barely fished and offers some of the biggest giant trevally in the world for No Boundaries Oman anglers.

Deep blue Indian Ocean around southern Oman

The upsides: Perfect weather and flat seas are prevalent. A great time for light-tackle variety fishing with plenty of action.

The downsides: The premier target here — ginormous giant trevally —are available but not in anything like the numbers during peak season. No Boundaries Oman closes May through most of September because that is monsoon season — very wet and very rough — and again in December and January, when currents are too light and winds from offshore (filled with sand) too strong.

8. Tropic Star Lodge (Piñas Bay, Panama)

One of the world’s pre-eminent fishing resorts, legendary Tropic Star , on the southernmost Panama coast, can be reached only by boat or plane. Located at the edge of the Darien jungle, the lodge offers 19 deluxe rooms. It boasts a fleet of 13 classic 31 Bertram sport-fishers equipped with top-notch tackle. While the coast off Piñas Bay is home to all the eastern Pacific’s game fishes, these waters are particularly known for their variety of billfishes. Besides large Pacific sailfish, three species of marlin are commonly caught: stripes, blues and blacks, often over famed Zane Grey Reef. More than 300 IGFA world records have come from Tropic Star/Piñas Bay.

Tropic Star Lodge in Panama

The upside: During these months, nearshore fishing peaks for coastal trophies such as big roosterfish and cubera snapper.

The downside: There are better months for marlin. Sailfishing can be plenty productive. Blue marlin are caught but not as often as during winter and late summer, and blacks are unlikely during this period. The resort says the increase in targeting the nearshore coastal game fish has really increased in recent years. Tropic Star closes each year during October and November.

9. The Zancudo Lodge (Playa Zancudo, Costa Rica)

Billing itself as a boutique fishing lodge, The Zancudo Lodge relies on fast, nimble center consoles, including two state-of-the-art Contender 32s for fishing both nearshore and offshore. The lodge, located just above the Panama border, sits at the edge of a black-sand beach near a remote jungle village. Besides fishing, visitors can surf, paddleboard, hike or zip-line the jungle, and more. Zancudo boasts of being rated among the top 25 hotels in Costa Rica by TripAdvisor.

Fishing out of Zancudo, Costa Rica

The upsides: This can be prime time for big schools of yellowfin, and not just footballs, but triple-digit fish. Blue marlin move in, and some days offshore during this time have produced double-digit marlin raised or released. Pressure is down now in nearshore fishing areas also.

The downsides: Yes, it is rainier during this period. However, that rain tends to take the form of late-afternoon scattered showers, often back at the resort after a day of fishing. The Zancudo Lodge is closed September and October, when rain throughout the day is most likely (though fishing remains outstanding).

Cape Cod Fishing Trips For Your Next Family Vacation

Posted on Published: 06/30/2023

On our last summer vacation to Cape Cod in August, we were looking for some new Cape Cod activities to experience. We’d always gone mini-golfing a few times, explored the shops, and visited several popular Cape Cod beaches. We decided to book a Cape Cod fishing trip – something we had never done as a family before.

There are quite a few options for Cape Cod fishing trips, with many smaller charter companies located throughout the region. These are typically companies with just one or two ships, however. So, you’ll want to try to book as early as possible, especially if you have a strong preference for time and/or date. Here are some of the things to consider when booking a Cape Cod fishing trip.

This post contains affiliate links. A purchase/click through one of these links may result in a commission paid to us at no cost to you.

fish in net over water

You’ll find many different Cape Cod charter fishing boats throughout Cape Cod, including locations in Yarmouth, Chatham, Harwich Port,, West Dennis, Hyannis, and Falmouth. So, unless you have a very specific fishing experience that you want to have, you are likely to find a company located wherever you are staying.

During our trip, we grabbed a few flyers from a local tourist attraction. From there, we looked at reviews online and then booked the option closest to us. You can also do an online search to see which places are most recommended based on the type of fishing and the amount of time you want to go.

Keep in mind that fishing requires patience, and younger kids may quickly get bored. These typically aren’t quick trips, and once you are out you are committed to the trip. They are also pretty expensive, so you’ll want to make sure that everyone will enjoy the trip. Some companies offer kid fishing trips which are shorter and better for younger kids.

What Type of Fishing is Available on Cape Cod

Depending on a number of factors like location, length of charter, and time of year, your charter will probably target certain types of fish. Local fish in the Cape Cod bay area includes haddock, striped bass, bluefin tuna, mahi-mahi, bluefish, flounder, pollock, and cod.

Deep sea fishing and bottom fishing trips are also offered and sometimes take place over one or two days. There are also private fishing excursions, and group trips. The group trips are typically more affordable, but you won’t have as much one-on-one assistance.

When we booked our fishing excursion, we were more concerned about the length of the trip and the available dates, and less concerned about the type of fish. But if you do have a preference, it’s a good idea to review all of the information about the charter before you book.

Check out water shoes for fishing here.

What To Look For in a Fishing Charter on Cape Cod

When you look to book your trip, there are some factors we recommend looking at. As always, we suggest looking at current online reviews before making your decision. Things have changed quite a bit in the last two years, so current reviews are definitely preferred.

You’ll also want to find out some things before you book. Price is a big consideration, as these trips typically aren’t cheap. With rising gas prices, you may find that your fishing charter has raised prices for the current year, or is charging a fuel surcharge. Always check before committing.

You’ll also want to find out what is offered on the boat. For a longer trip, especially with children, it can be helpful to have a restroom onboard (however rudimentary it is). You’ll also want to know what type of fishing equipment is provided. Most families will want everything – bait and rods – included, and most charters do include these things.

Do you want to take your catch home and cook it? Most charters will filet your catch for you right on the ship. If you are staying at a hotel, you won’t want to bring anything home. But, if you are in a vacation home, this can be a great way to enjoy the fruits of your labor.

You’ll also want to find out what is provided for you. Typically, you’ll have to pack your own snacks, beverages, etc, and you’ll want to be prepared.

Check the weather policy before you go. Most trips will go in the rain, but not if there is a marine advisory.

How to Plan For Your Fishing Trip and What to Bring

These are long trips, so you’ll need to prepare in advance so that you have a successful excursion. You may both be hot and cold during the trip (especially one that leaves early in the morning), so pack layers. Sunscreen and a hat are both essential, as are shoes that aren’t slippery. Make sure you apply the sunscreen before you go, and then bring it with you so that you can reapply as necessary.

If you are prone to seasickness, you’ll want to decide whether or not to take medication. Keep in mind that most options have to be taken in advance so you should think about this before you go.

You’ll also want to pack snacks and drinks. It will probably get hot, so be sure to bring water. You may also want to pack a cooler, especially for longer trips. That way, everything will stay cold.

Taking a Cape Cod fishing trip can be such a fun, unique experience for families. With these tips, you should be able to completely enjoy your excursion, and may even get to take some fish back with you!

Frequently Asked Questions

May and June are great months, but we fished in August and still had a great experience. The summer in general is a good time.

I’d recommend checking with your charter company to see what is provided. In general, you’ll want sunscreen, a hat, water, and snacks. Typically, fishing equipment is provided but you’ll need to confirm with the company directly.

Best Locations for Fishing Trips

Taking time out of your hectic schedule now and then to spend a day on the lake doing what you love is a good idea if you enjoy fishing. You should always conduct some research before booking a fishing charter, especially if it is a private one.

Lake Michigan

Lake Michigan Charter Fishing (one of the fishing charters)

It is also known as “King Salmon” in the case of Chinook salmon. These fish are Great Lake aristocracy, with their great hard-fighting action. However, rainbow trout aren’t the only sea trout that may be found in this wonderful fishery.

To begin with, there are massive Brown Trout /Lake Trout to contend with. On your Great Lakes species bucket list, these feisty fish are more than a worthy opponent.

The salmon species are a great example of how freshwater fish can be just as exciting to catch as their saltwater counterparts.

Chinook and Coho are the two types of salmon that may be found in this lake, and they usually make their first appearance in the spring. On the other hand, you can go fly fishing before the salmon fishing season begins in the early summer.

San Diego, California

H & M Landing (one of the fishing charters)

San Diego is a popular fishing destination in the United States. Take a private fishing charter out on one of the city’s seven ocean piers or go pier fishing on one of its many freshwater and saltwater fishing alternatives.

Fishing for yellowfin tuna, bass, and various gamefish while traveling around San Diego’s picturesque coastline is a terrific charter choice for anglers of all levels of expertise. It is also a famous destination for whale-watching trips from the Baja Peninsula to the Bering Strait.

Pacific Gray Whales are frolicking during one of the world’s longest migrations, and it’s a fantastic opportunity to see these magnificent creatures. There are numerous inshore fishing in the world-famous San Diego.

Key West, Florida

Gulfstream Fishing (one of the fishing charters)

For traveling anglers, Key West is a known east coast fishing location. Hundreds of fish species live on the reefs and shipwrecks in the fishing spots.

Tour and shore fishing getaway is offered for all levels of skill, whether you want to go deep or fly and flat fishing in the seemingly endless shallow “flats.”

Improve your fishing package together with the guidance of the captain and crew on private fishing tours. You get to plan your sailing adventure with Laid Back Key West.

You may do it all with your private charter host, whether you are catching fish, snorkeling, sitting in the sun, or doing all of the above.

Virginia Beach, Virginia

Long Time Comm’n Charters & Sportfishing (one of the fishing charters)

In the Chesapeake Bay, offshore fishing in Virginia Beach, fish are plentiful all year. There are four fishing piers in Virginia Beach and several half-day and full-day fishing cruises.

For a family-friendly day of fishing for sharks, redfish, cobia, and other species, book a charter with Long Time Comm’n Charters & Sportfishing, a world-class fishing group.

Aquaman Sportfishing Excursions, Rudee Tours, and Knot Tell’n Charters are some of the other fishing charters in Virginia Beach that we recommend.

You’ll have an entire album full of images of your catches when you return from your fishing trip.

Plymouth, Cape Cod, Massachusetts

Captain John Boats (one of the fishing charters)

Plymouth, located on the historic and scenic Cape Cod peninsula, is one of the top fishing trips in the U.S. and offers a typical New England landscape to anglers. On one of Plymouth’s many fishing cruises, you can cast your line into the deep sea.

Catch striped bass, tuna, bluefish, and the rare shark in the excellent fishing ocean (Cape Cod is famous for the film “Jaws,” though you’re unlikely to capture anything quite as fierce).

With the help of expert fishing instructors, the crew, and the captain, you’ll find some of the best deep-sea fishing in the area on a charter with Deep Sea Fishing Plymouth.

Waikiki, Hawaii

Waikiki Dive Center (one of the fishing charters)

On the island of Oahu, Waikiki, a suburb deep in the Pacific, is home to some of the world’s most outstanding fishing vacations. A deep-sea fishing charter is available at the Waikiki Diving Center, where you can catch mahi-mahi, onu, tuna, and potentially even a Pacific blue marlin.

An excellent trip on the Waikiki coastlines replete with a 20-minute shark cage dive that will bring you up close and personal with some sharp-toothed beauties, as well as a North Shore Shark Adventure cruise if you’re up for a thrill.

Miami/Miami Beach, Florida

The Charter Agency (one of the fishing charters)

Miami is teeming with sport fish due to its warm current and diversified habitat. You can be sure that fish will bite in the shallow flats or the deep waters offshore.

Catch snapper, marlin, grouper, tuna, sailfish, and other fish. Consider planning an Everglades Airboat Safari if you’re not in a hurry to get back on land after fishing.

Your super-fast airboat will take you through the mangroves while you spot artificial reefs, alligators, sea turtles, deer, and birds, all while being accompanied by an educational guide.

Lake Fork, TX

Lake Fork is located 65 miles east of Dallas in Texas’ Piney Woods region. The only reason you’re coming here is to catch some bass. Throughout your stay, you’ll be able to fish and eat largemouth and white bass.

Bass is the holy grail of freshwater fish, and Lake Fork is a destination for bass fishing enthusiasts. To diversify your trip, it’s a good idea to spend some time in Fort Worth, a city known for its cowboys.

Galveston, Texas

Reel Men Fishing Charters (one of the fishing charters)

In sunny Galveston, you may enjoy one of the best fishing expeditions in the South. Blacktip, bull, red snapper, croaker, drum, stingrays, and other freshwater and saltwater fish can be caught with your reel.

The private Reel Men Fishing Charters, one of several fishing charters in Galveston, allows you to choose between shark fishing or adventures.

After you’ve had your fill of fishing tours in Galveston, you might want to try a new water sport like surfing, windsurfing, or kitesurfing because it’s also home to some of the world’s best surfing.

Ketchikan, Alaska

Alaska King Fishing Charter (one of the fishing charters)

The southernmost point of Alaska’s Inside Passage is Ketchikan. One of the best fishing vacations is the Bering Sea Crab Fishermen’s Tour, made famous by Deadliest Catch.

One of the sites in the country where you can catch fish is near the Mississippi River’s entrance in Venice. Bass, redfish, and speckled trout are examples of freshwater fish. Larger saltwater fish, such as marlin and sailfish, can also be found around Venice.

Venice has one of the country’s most unique cultural and topographical environments. It’s also convenient to New Orleans, which is a plus. You’ll be traveling 90 miles along the west bank of the Mississippi River after landing at Louis Armstrong International Airport.

Lake Champlain, NY, and V.T.

Anglers can capture various fish in this area, including large and smallmouth bass, walleye, northern pike, and landlocked Atlantic salmon. The Lake Champlain Basin Program contains a list of species that reads like a bucket list for avid anglers.

This lake is located between New York’s Northeast and Vermont’s Northwestern borders. You can get to the East from I-87 in New York and the West from I-89 in Vermont.

Outdoor Expeditions USA, Holly Springs

Outdoor Expeditions USA offers fishing trips on some of North Carolina’s best lakes, and the company welcomes anglers of all ages and experience levels. Falls Lake, Jordan Lake, and Shearon Harris Lake are excellent bass fishing destinations.

San Francisco

San Francisco Fishing Charters has a good reputation for providing outstanding service and personal attention to every client. The Game Fish, the company’s boating adventure, has everything you’ll need in fishing gear for a day on the water for up to six anglers.

An optimum fishing period for striped bass and sturgeon is between January and March, but you can visit all year round.

Mammoth Lakes, CA

This magnificent area in Central California, surrounded by the spectacular Sierra Nevada Mountains, offers incredible scenery, a variety of activities, and some of the greatest wild trout fishing on the West Coast.

The lakes of Placid are framed by snow-capped peaks. Ice fishing, mountain biking, hiking trails, and skiing are just a few of the activities available in Mammoth Lakes. It’s also a year-round site that’s easy to get to.

A ten-minute drive from downtown Mammoth Lakes, Mammoth Yosemite Airport welcomes commercial flights from LAX all year long (Los Angeles).

Experience Fishing Like No Other

The modern man’s favorite pastime is fishing, which is one of the most underrated. It’s a hobby that can be done in practically any area, requires very little equipment, and requires very little ability.

It’s also a social activity that allows you to go to some of the country’s most isolated and beautiful places, and it’s well-balanced enough for a beginner to progress to more technical hobbies.

We hope our list of the best fishing trips in the US proves useful to you. Whatever your choice is, you’ll surely have a good time!

Easy Tips for Planning a Fishing Trip

fishing trip 06

Choose the perfect moment

Fishing is all about being in the right place at the right time . Any seasoned fisherman will tell you that if you go fishing at the wrong time of the day, you won’t be able to catch anything, no matter how skilled you are. Therefore, the first step is to plan your trip so that you can fish in the early morning and at sunset.

If you arrive at your location in the afternoon, you would have already lost the best time window for fishing. Plus, you won’t have any time to relax, and a fishing trip should also be about enjoying a day outdoors. Make sure you arrive at your location before sunrise, and this way, you will have all the hours of the early morning for fishing.

Pack everything you need for a trip

When you go on a fishing trip, you tend to focus on the fishing part and forget about other essentials that are just as important. One of them is the tent. If you want to make the most out of your fishing trip, you should spend at least one night on location, which will give you more opportunities to fish at the right hours.

Make sure you choose the right kind of tent, especially if you plan to use your truck. For example, if you ride a Tacoma, choose a truck tent that is perfect for Tacomas . If you are planning a family fishing trip, make sure the tent is big enough.

Also, don’t forget about food and water. Always have plenty of snacks at hand; they will help you stay focused for a long time until you actually catch some fish. Think ahead about what kind of refreshments you would like to bring on your trip. Consider the worst-case scenario, where something happens, and you can’t catch anything. You will definitely be needing supplies.

Be prepared for bad weather

No fishing trip can be successful without checking the weather first. Weather affects fish activity , and it can make it a lot harder for you to catch anything. Depending on the season in which you’re planning your fishing trip, always check the weather report and see when it is the best time for fishing.

Also, you want to stay safe at all times. You wouldn’t want to come back home with a giant bass, but with a terrible cold or a back pain. Sunscreen is your friend, not only in the hot summer months but also in the winter. Also, remember to always pack some lightweight layers, in case temperatures drop, or if you want to fish late in the evening.

Know the specifics of your location

There are a lot of differences between boat fishing and shoreline fishing, or between deep-sea fishing and lake fishing. There are also a lot of differences when it comes to various types of fish or fishing seasons. In order to be successful, you need to understand these characteristics and prepare accordingly.

Once you know exactly what location you want to choose and what kind of fish you are expecting to catch, you then need to choose the proper gear. Having the adequate type of reel, bait, and line will increase your chances of success. If you are a beginner, it’s always best to invite a friend or relative who is more experienced on your trip.

Fishing trips are always great fun and a great way to spend quality time with your loved ones, while also enjoying your favorite hobby. In order to have a great fishing trip, make sure to plan time for fishing in the early morning or when the sun is setting. Remember to bring a good truck tent, as well as food and water supplies.

Cabo San Lucas is widely recognized for its marlin population and hosts the largest marlin tournament in the world. Chefs will cook your fresh catch for dinner as well.

The fishing here features two very different and equally impressive rivers.

Tipiliuke Lodge , Patagonia, Argentina

Considered by many to be one of the world’s top fly fishing destinations, Tipiliuke in northern Patagonia is home to more than 17 miles of the world’s finest trout waters. The fishing season here runs from early November through May and features two very different rivers, the Chimehuín and Quilquihue. It is during the last 30 minutes of light that anglers may use a large streamer to coax out one of the monster browns from the Chimehuín. Typical fish average 14-20 inches, but each season guests catch browns approaching 30 inches. The nine-room Tipiliuke Lodge boasts a large wood burning sauna, relaxing massage room, yoga room and hot tub to enhance guests’ stay.

Fishing on a dory drift boat on the Madison River

6 Best Drift-Boat Fishing Trips in the Northeast

Right when you think that a drift boat fishing opportunity is out of your reach, these six places will change your mind.

When it comes to both types of fishing —conventional and fly fishing —we all have our preference, but in truth, drift-boat anglers can have the best of both worlds and not miss a thing. Whether you want to target trout and salmon or just want to find some backwater bass that no one else can reach, getting into a drift boat to do a little float fishing can get you there.

Expert drift-boat guides have all the experience and tackle to get you to fish that other anglers can't reach, keep you on them, and give you angling opportunities you're unlikely to find on your own. And if you've never had a big steelhead, king salmon, or brown trout stripping line off of your reel from the bow of a boat in the current of a river, then you don't know what you're missing.

Now you just need a place to go. In the Northeast, you have your pick of options in Pennsylvania, New York, New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Vermont, and Maine for the opportunity to relax and fish. These waterways offer the six best drift-boat fishing trips in the Northeastern U.S.

1. Salmon River, New York

Back in the 1960s when salmon were introduced into the Great Lakes, the idea was to enhance angling opportunities for state residents while contributing to their economies by luring folks from other states to come and enjoy the great fishing. Ever since the stocking plans added brown trout and steelhead trout, along with supplemental stockings of lake trout and Atlantic salmon, the salmonid fishing in these states has become the stuff of legend.

In the northern part of New York State lies the iconic Salmon River, a 17-mile stretch that empties into Lake Ontario . It looks and plays the part of some of the greatest salmon rivers in North America, and you can fish it thoroughly from a drift boat. You can find yourself drifting down over 12 miles of fishable river with one or two people and enjoying what some call the best cold-water fishery on the east coast.

Drift boating the Salmon River generally costs about $400 to $450 for two anglers, or about $600 for three fishermen (for a full day) depending on the guide service.

2. Allegheny River, Pennsylvania

Taking a float fishing trip on the Allegheny affords the serious and the novice angler alike a chance to access areas that are difficult at best to reach by foot but also to fish from a mobile casting platform. Or you can stop, get out, and put your waders to use by sneaking up stealthily on trout resting in pools that get little to no fishing pressure.

Guide rates differ, but you can expect to pay about $500 to $600 for eight hours of fishing, or about half of that amount for a half-day's excursion.

3. Androscoggin River, Maine

With all the possibilities for a drift-fishing excursion in Vacationland, you may need to reserve more than one trip per season. But if you choose the "Andro" for your drift trip, you won't be disappointed. Even with the immense fly fishing prospects that can be done in Maine, the Androscoggin River has a warm-water fishery for float fishing that is second to none.

You can target small and largemouth bass, northern pike, black crappie, and even pickerel, whether your preference is fly fishing or traditional fishing. As with most drift-boat excursions, you can expect to have all the fishing gear you need provided for you and even a shore lunch for a day on the water.

The cost of drift boating the Androscoggin will run you about $475 for a full day with two people, and the minimum age is 12 years old.

4. Winooski River, Vermont

Anglers on the Winooski can find themselves hooked up with everything from landlocked salmon, brown and rainbow trout, to pike, smallmouths, and walleye, just to name a few. For float fishermen, you'll typically target trout and bass in May and June or September and October while water levels support the best fishing and keep both the anglers and the fishery safe.

There may be no way better to fish in Vermont than on a drift boat, especially in the fall. The float alone is worth taking the trip to see the beautiful scenery that the Green Mountain State has to offer.

Rates for fishing on the Winooski River run in the neighborhood of about $375 for one angler fishing for a half-day—$425 for two anglers and about $500 for two fishermen to fish for a full day.

5. Connecticut River, New Hampshire

The Connecticut River is the longest river in New England and is widely known for its diverse fishery, including everything from trout and salmon to sturgeon and stripers, but float fishing anglers mainly look to target trout.

Even with that in mind, the strong currents of this fishery can hold smallmouth bass, walleye, and some big northern pike. For those who love the New Hampshire scenery as much as the fishing, you may have a chance to see bald eagles, moose, black bears, and dozens of species of waterfowl.

Guides' rates on the Connecticut River vary in the range of $400 to $450 for one angler to have a full day of fishing.

6. Penobscot River, Maine

Maine has such a plethora of drift boating, wading, and other guided boat trips—both freshwater and saltwater—that it would take a lifetime to try them all.

One of Maine's greatest attributes when it comes to angling opportunities is the fact that it not only supports an amazing trout fishery, it's still one of the best places in North America to catch and release Atlantic landlocked salmon . The west branch of the Penobscot River in particular has everything those coveted fish need to live a full and thriving life due to the smelt runs and the abundance of aquatic insect life.

The cost for a day on the Penobscot is around $600 for two anglers to have a full day of salmon fishing and the time of their lives.

Surviving Seasickness on Your Charter Fishing Trip

James Swan    06.13.13

Surviving Seasickness on Your Charter Fishing Trip

“Should we take some sea-sick medicine for tomorrow’s trip?” one of my companions asked the charter boat operator the night before we were to spend a day fishing for halibut in Kachemak Bay out of Homer, Alaska.

“If you spend this much money, it would be a shame to spend your trip puking,” the man replied with a wry smile, as he slipped the credit card receipt across the counter with a pen.

A hundred and seventy-five bucks a head to spend a day rocking and rolling on rough seas, even if you come home with a couple of barn door-size halibut, is no picnic for many people. My companions bought some Bonine. I declined, deciding to try a different approach.

I grew up on Lake Erie and spent a lot of time bouncing around on the waves. I never had any problems with motion sickness, but then again swells on Lake Erie usually don’t get bigger than three feet. Larger than that, and small craft warnings go up.

Then I moved to the west coast and the blue Pacific, where the waves were definitely bigger. No problem with seasickness in Puget Sound or Oregon waters. Then I moved to the San Francisco Bay area.

What charter boat captains who run out of the Golden Gate refer to as “light chop” can be six- to eight- foot swells with four- to six-foot waves cresting on top of them. Under such conditions, nearly every time that I ventured into the Pacific out of the Golden Gate in pursuit of salmon, where the outgoing fresh waters of the Sacramento River collide with the briny Pacific swells pushed in the opposite direction by prevailing westerlies, I ended up at the rail losing my breakfast and finding heaven turn into hell. Those experiences got me into researching motion sickness.

Stress, sea legs, and conventional methods

Motion sickness or seasickness (on boats) is caused by movement that affects the sense of balance, which is perceived in the inner ear and your eyes. Dizziness, fatigue, nausea, and vomiting are common symptoms; it can also happen in cars, trains, boats, and planes. Children are more likely to get it than adults, especially older adults.

Like riding a bicycle, you learn to “get your sea legs” if you go out enough, but if you only venture out to sea infrequently, your inner ears don’t seem to remember much from previous bad experiences.

Motion sickness is ultimately a physical reaction to perceptual stress. Your resistance to succumbing to getting green is also influenced by hangovers, other illnesses that weaken you, lack of fresh air, and a lack of sleep. Fear also increases the chances of getting sick. In short, the more fatigued that you are, the greater your chances are to get sick on a rocking boat.

One cause of motion sickness is the lack of a solid orienting reference point, which is always present on land. The loss of such an anchoring point may trigger a panic reaction that reduces your ability to cope with an unusual situation. If you’re on rocking boat and can see the shore, gazing on a specific point on land will give some relief that will help you get your bearings.

Seasickness is a physical reaction to perceptual stress. Alternative medicinal methods may be able to help.

Stay outside the cabin of the boat in cool, fresh air, and toward the stern of the boat . The bow rises and falls a lot farther on most swells. One man on our fishing trip got sick every time he went to the bow. Wear windbreakers and warm clothes so you can stay outside in the fresh air.

Over-the-counter motion sickness medications like Dramamine and Bonine, which are antihistamines, help many people, but they can have side effects. Read the side of the package where it cautions people with heart disease, urinary problems, etc. developing complications, plus drowsiness, etc. Scopalamine patches, a prescription remedy that’s worn behind the ear, is effective for many, but has similar, or worse, side effects. If these work for you, great.

An alternative approach

Personally, as a writer who spends too much time sitting on his derriere in front of a screen I decided that on this trip I would seek out an alternative that would not make me drowsy or worry about side effects.

To create my strategy, I consulted an acupuncturist. Why go there? There’s considerable research that documents the effectiveness of acupuncture for a wide variety of ailments. Also, I used to teach the course on psycho-somatics for psychologists at the University of Oregon, which included acupuncture. To prepare for that, I studied Oriental Medicine for almost a year. This included acupressure, but I dropped out before going through the needles training for acupuncture.

I like the Oriental Medicine approach as it stresses prevention, and my family and I personally have benefited a great deal from the herbs, needles, and various physical exercises used in Oriental medicine.

One acupuncturist I contacted was Dr. Xiao “Rocky” Wang , who was an E.R. trauma physician in Beijing, once worked with the Chinese Olympic team, and currently teaches at the American College of Traditional Chinese Medicine in San Francisco. He recommended “ All Natural Chinese Herbal Tea Tablets ” (Huo Xiang Zheng Qi Wan) made in China and distributed by Krown International Trading Company in Hayward, California.

He and I agreed that motion sickness elastic wristbands, which are worn on each wrist like watches, also would be worth trying. They have a small button that applies pressure to an acupuncture point on the wrist that is three fingers down from the wrist crease that stabilizes the stomach. Yes, I know it doesn’t make sense to a Western mind that the wrist and the stomach have anything to do with each other, let alone a point on the body three fingers down the wrist from the wrist crease effecting your head and stomach, but results is what I’m interested in and there is research that supports the effectiveness of wrist bands. For example, a 1995 study published in the journal Aviation, Space, and Environmental Medicine reported that using your thumb to press your inner arm three finger widths (about two inches) down from your wrist crease relieves motion sickness . The elastic wrist band with a plastic button does exactly that.

I brought along some ginger candy as part of my test to help calm my stomach.

As a final touch, I brought along some sweet ginger candy to munch on during the trip for an energy burst and to calm the stomach. Research reported by the University of Wisconsin Medical Center, confirms that ginger root may be as effective for motion sickness as over-the-counter medicines like Dramamine or Bonine. This is also a Chinese herbal remedy.

The morning of the trip, I ate a roll and drank some Chinese herbal tea before departing. You need to eat something; otherwise you will have less energy, which will make you more prone to seasickness. Carbs are great. Avoid greasy foods. On the trip out, I took a seat outside the cabin toward the stern of the boat on the two hour trip to the fishing grounds. Watching the whales and sea otters was a treat. If you are in sight of land, keeping a focus on a fixed point on shore while you are in a rocking boat can ease vertigo.

We anchored in eight-foot swells, with two- to three-foot waves cresting on top. Not quite a “perfect storm” sea, but no millpond. Soon you could hear a combination of people whooping at the strike of a big halibut, and people standing next to them whooping their breakfast over the side.

Let’s face it, getting seasick is no fun, and it’s dangerous in a lurching boat. I’ve been on boats where it becomes the macho thing to stay out regardless of the swell, despite lots of people getting seasick. There ain’t no taxi back early, folks. Not my cup of tea.

It’s always good to test out a method more than once. On this trip, I used this strategy for motion sickness prevention twice. During the day, while in the swells, I sipped on herbal hot tea and ate pieces of ginger root candy. I also ate some crackers. On the ride back in, when we hit the sheltered waters, I gobbled up my sandwiches with gusto.

I repeated the same procedure a second time and it worked just fine. There were no side effects, and no drowsiness. I felt calm and energized. And I did not get sick.

Would it work every time? Time will tell. Would the same approach apply to women with morning sickness, air sickness or people on chemotherapy who get nauseated? Consult your doctor, and/or a good acupuncturist. If you cannot get the Chinese herbal tea I used, ginger tea may also work just as well .

If you’re planning a trip out onto water that may rock and roll, why spend the day feeding your breakfast to the fish? Traditional Oriental remedies for seasickness may be unconventional, but at least for this landlubber, they work.

'Fish on!': Lake Erie fishing charter hosts trip of a lifetime thanks to hungry fish and total eclipse

T he men from Stars and Stripes Plumbing got to the docks along the Black River early on April 8. The weather was perfect for a great day on Lake Erie.

"We're going to go get some fish during the eclipse," Captain Gary Carpenter says. "Get some walleye out there."

Carpenter has run SARA J Fishing Charters for more than 30 years, and he booked a special group for a special day.

It's a tight-knit group that has fished together many times before.

"One electrician, a carpenter, and then two of my guys that work for me, we're all plumbers," Dan Richmond, who booked the trip for his guys, told us.

They traded their tools for rod, reel, and sun.

As Captain Gary and First Mate Julie got the SARA J headed upriver towards the lake, you could feel the excitement grow.

"It should be a good time," Dan noted. "They say it will be a once-in-a-lifetime event."

Some of his charter mates seemed more excited about the fishing trip than the once-in-a-lifetime event they were about to be immersed in.

Once clear of the river, it was throttle up, and Gary's boat made its way to the fishing grounds. Recent rains had made the waters close to shore very muddy, so it was a hunt for clean water.

Seven miles later, things started with a bang.

"Fish on!" Gary exclaimed. It was a cry that would be heard over and as fish after fish was caught. The guys were bragging the whole time.

"Now that's how you do it, Pat!" yelled the electrician, as a nice five-pound walleye was netted and brought aboard. But things were about to change.

Around 2 p.m., faces turned skyward, with protected eyes, of course. The eclipse had arrived and things were changing fast.

"That is kind of weird," Carpenter admitted, as the skies slowly darkened.

It was getting eerie out on Lake Erie; the fish didn't seem to mind as light levels dropped. With about five minutes until totality, multiple rods doubled as the walleye hit.

"Fish on! Oh, I can't see it with the glasses on," Gary said while handing the bouncing rods to the anglers. There were three more walleye in the box, but it was here: eclipse totality.

The sight stopped everyone in their tracks.

"Now it's out. It's gone," Dan remarked as he looked toward the heavens. "Check that out!"

The men quit looking for fish and instead craned their necks and watched as the moon's shadow blotted out the sun. Their excitement turned to silence as everyone took in the cosmic event of a lifetime. It was an awe-inspiring three minutes as the youngest member of the team yelled out, "That's really cool!"

It was cool, about 10 degrees cooler than it was before totality. The winds died out, as well, leaving our great lake as smooth as glass.

As brightness returned, the guys took one last look, a cherished memory shared on the water. Captain Gary tries to make every trip a great one for his clients, but on this trip, he had a whole lot of help from above.

"It's something none of us here — except for the youngster, about 20 — are never going to see again, you know?" he said "Very exciting. Very exciting."

A cosmic event of a lifetime, along with 26 walleye harvested. A great trip, any way you look at it, even through dark glasses.
