Where I Find the Best Travel Deals

Surfing the web for travel deals

Finding the best travel deals is a matter of timing.

A lot of people think travel is just expensive, but in reality, there are incredible deals happening all the time. The often don’t last too long, and you have to act quickly. That can sometimes be a problem when a deal requires jumping on a plane tomorrow (how many people can do that?).

Fortunately, most deals are for months in the future, giving you ample time to plan your schedule.

Often I will book a flight and then figure out my plans.

Since you can usually cancel a flight within 24 hours without incurring a fee, I lock in the deal and then figure out if I can make it work. Sometimes I can (like the $1,200 USD business-class flight from LA to Stockholm round-trip); sometimes I can’t (like the $400 USD New Zealand flights I had to cancel).

I am always looking out for deals.

Today, I want to tell you where I go for travel deals, tips, and expert advice. After all, these resources focus solely on this one aspect of travel, so why not use them? I can’t know everything, so I rely on specialists. If travel were a hospital, I would be your general practitioner.

Here’s a quick look at the top companies I use and suggest:

Quick Overview: Best Travel Deals

  • The Flight Deal – This is a great resource for finding cheap flights from the USA. If you’re based in the States, start your research here!
  • Secret Flying – This cheap flight website finds “error fares” (when airlines make pricing mistakes) to and from destinations all around the globe.
  • Holiday Pirates – No matter where you’re based this is a great cheap flight website so be sure to always check here for more deals.
  • Going – Formerly Scott’s Cheap Flights, this is another awesome resource for finding flight deals from the US. They offer free flight alerts, and with a premium membership you get access to even more deals as soon as they find them.

If you’re simply looking to book a flight, check out the search engines below. It’s important to remember that there is no one best online booking website. All the search engine websites have blind spots so it’s important to search a few different places before you book your flight. Generally, the BEST booking sites are the following:

  • Skyscanner – Skyscanner is a very intuitive platform that lets you search for an open-ended trip. If you’re not 100% sure where you want to go (or when) then start your search with Skyscanner.
  • Google Flights – A good all-around flight search website to include in your cheap flight arsenal.

I always start my searches with Skyscanner . They search booking websites and airlines all around the world to ensure that no deal is missed. They cast the widest net and constantly are vetting the sites they search. Start with them!

  • View from the Wing – This is where I go for airline and frequent flier news.
  • The Points Guy – A great resource for credit card and points & miles news and information.
  • One Mile at a Time – This is a great website for credit card, in-flight experiences, and frequent flier news.
  • Skift – The best place for all airline and travel industry news.

For Australia and New Zealand, visit Points Hack .

For Canada, use Prince of Travel .

For the UK, Head for Points .

As a very, very, very avid traveler (and while I have my own special tricks and tips ), when you’re overseas a lot, it’s hard to stay up to date on your own so I use these three sites to keep me in the loop.

In my mind, there is only one cruise deal website worth following: CruiseSheet . This site consistently has some of the lowest rates out there, and its interface is beautiful.

If I don’t find anything on CruiseSheet or want to double-check a price, I go to the second-best website, vacationstogo.com .

  • Booking.com – This is the best website for finding hotels no matter where you are in the world. I usually start my search for hotel rooms here.
  • Agoda.com – While you can use Agoda for finding hotels worldwide, I specifically use Agoda when looking for hotels in Asia. This seems to be where they go above and beyond the competition.
  • Campspace – This app connects you with locals renting out plots of land, RVs, cabins, and camper vans ranging from rustic to glamping.
  • Trusted Housesitters – Helps travelers connect with locals looking for house and pet sitters. Great for slow travelers/long-term travelers.
  • Hostelworld – They are hands-down the best resource for finding budget-friendly hostels around the world. I use them every time I travel and you should too!

  • Devour Food Tours – My go-to food tour company, with tours all around Euopre and the US.

I never travel anywhere without travel insurance. After dealing with injuries and emergencies abroad (and knowing plenty of other travelers who have been injured or robbed on the road) I always make sure I have comprehensive medical and travel insurance before I leave home. Here are my recommended companies for finding the best travel insurance:

  • SafetyWing – This is my go-to travel insurance company. They offer affordable monthly plans with a deductible. Great for digital nomads and frugal travelers!
  • Insure My Trip – If you’re over 70 and looking for insurance, this is the best place to find it!
  • Medjet – Medjet is a good option for people who are going to be far from home and want added evacuation coverage. It’s great for solo travelers and super affordable.

While I think my site is amazing for your on-the-ground tips, tricks, and advice needs, for when you need travel deals to get you to where you want to go, use the companies above. They’re what I use, and they’ve never steered me wrong! They’ll save you the most money!

Book Your Trip: Logistical Tips and Tricks

Book Your Flight Find a cheap flight by using Skyscanner . It’s my favorite search engine because it searches websites and airlines around the globe so you always know no stone is being left unturned.

Book Your Accommodation You can book your hostel with Hostelworld . If you want to stay somewhere other than a hostel, use Booking.com as it consistently returns the cheapest rates for guesthouses and hotels.

Don’t Forget Travel Insurance Travel insurance will protect you against illness, injury, theft, and cancellations. It’s comprehensive protection in case anything goes wrong. I never go on a trip without it as I’ve had to use it many times in the past. My favorite companies that offer the best service and value are:

  • SafetyWing (best for everyone)
  • Insure My Trip (for those 70 and over)
  • Medjet (for additional evacuation coverage)

This $35 Lounge Set Is the Perfect Spring Travel Outfit for Cold Planes and Warm Destinations

It’s even softer than my $300 version.

Travel + Leisure / Reese Herrington

I have my airport uniform down to a science. And while I’ve historically rotated through the same four lounge sets that admittedly cost me a pretty penny, I was in desperate need of a sweatsuit alternative with shorts. Because I’m always freezing under the blast of plane air conditioning, I needed something that would keep me cozy on flights without causing me to overheat when I finally landed in a warm destination.

Instead of springing for another $300 set, I decided on this $35 version at Walmart for my flight to Miami last weekend. The second I put it on my body, I was blown away by the quality and overall comfort. The matching sweatsuit, which comes in seven different color options, is lined with one of the softest polyester fabrics I’ve ever touched. While I was worried it would feel a little too heavy for Florida, upon trying the style, I was pleasantly surprised that it was more lightweight than it looked.

Naughtyhood Two-Piece Short Set

The set includes a perfectly oversized crewneck sweatshirt with matching drawstring shorts that I wore with my go-to sneakers and a tank top underneath for when I arrived in Miami. The fabric feels breathable and easy to move in, while the mid-thigh length shorts offer a flattering fit.

The elastic waistband on the shorts keeps them in place and hugs my waist without feeling overly constricting, which is especially important to me when flying. Plus, the deep pockets are convenient for stashing small items like lip balm and my hotel key card while I’m on the go. I tossed on the sweatshirt for my three-hour flight to Miami, and upon arrival, I casually draped it around my shoulders.

Shoppers similarly raved over the set that feels much more expensive than it is. One customer said it’s so versatile, they wear both pieces separately, while another added that it’s so soft to the touch and lightweight yet cozy enough to wear year-round.

While the prices vary slightly (my blue-gray version is $35) you can score even better prices on black and green styles for as little as $21. Head over to Walmart to add the cozy set to your online cart or keep scrolling for more styles that are perfect for cold planes to warm destinations.

With the rise of AI in travel booking, how is World Trip Deal differentiating itself from the competition? (Focuses on competition and differentiation)

Mahdi Nourian: Look, there's no denying it – AI is taking the travel booking world by storm. Competition is fierce, and everyone's scrambling to integrate this powerful technology.

But here at World Trip Deal (WTD), we're not just following the pack; we're leading the charge. Here's how we differentiate ourselves:

1. Beyond Basic Recommendations:  Many travel platforms use AI to suggest popular destinations or amazing hotel options . WTD goes a step further. We leverage AI to create a unique profile for each traveler. Imagine a travel agent who analyzes your past trips, interests, and budget to curate an itinerary that feels like it was designed specifically for you. No more cookie-cutter experiences!

2. Luxury on a Budget:  Let's face it, affordability is a major concern for many travelers. However, luxury shouldn't be reserved for the high rollers. WTD's AI technology negotiates exclusive travel deals with travel partners, unlocking hidden gems and securing discounts on luxury hotels and unique experiences.

3. Flexibility for the Adventurous Soul:  Travel plans can change, and WTD's AI is built to adapt. Unlike some competitors with rigid AI recommendations, our platform allows travelers to modify their itineraries on the fly .

4. A Seamless User Experience:  AI shouldn't feel like a black box. WTD's user-friendly platform integrates seamlessly with our AI engine.

Travelers can search, compare, and book flights, accommodations, and activities all within a single platform.

No more juggling multiple websites and struggling with complex interfaces. We believe travel planning should be enjoyable, not a chore.

5. Future-Proofing Travel Booking:  AI is constantly evolving, and at WTD, we're committed to staying at the forefront of this technology.

So, sure, the travel booking landscape is brimming with AI, but at WTD, we offer a distinctly personalized and budget-conscious approach to luxury travel . We're not just suggesting destinations; we're crafting unforgettable adventures tailored to your unique desires.

What role do you see AI playing in the future of travel booking, and how is World Trip Deal preparing for it? (Focuses on future trends and WTD's position)

World Trip Deal (WTD) leverages AI to shape the future of travel booking, promising a dynamic, personalized experience.

Envision AI tailoring itineraries based on real-time factors like weather or mood, simplifying processes such as airport check-ins, and offering real-time translation.

WTD invests in continuous AI advancement, ensuring a seamless, intuitive user experience, and revolutionizing travel from planning to discovery.

●      Transparency with AI: "How transparent is World Trip Deal with travellers regarding how AI is used in the booking process? Do they have any control over the AI recommendations?"

Mahdi Nourian emphasizes transparency at World Trip Deal (WTD), clearly outlining AI’s role in the booking process:

1. Clear Communication: WTD provides easy-to-understand explanations where AI impacts recommendations.

2. AI Preferences: Travelers can tailor their AI interactions by setting preferences for travel style, interests, and pace.

3. Curated Transparency: Instead of complex technical details, WTD highlights when recommendations are AI-driven, based on travel trends and user behaviors.

4. Control Through Customization: The platform allows extensive customization, enabling travelers to refine searches and adjust itineraries.

5. Human Expertise: AI is enhanced by human experts who provide insights to balance and personalize the travel experience.

WTD’s approach ensures that travelers understand and control AI’s input, enhancing their booking experience while keeping personal choice paramount.

Future of Travel and WTD:

●      AI and Sustainability: "Is there a role for AI in promoting sustainable travel practices within World Trip Deal's platform?"

Mahdi Nourian: at World Trip Deal we emphasize AI’s role in sustainable travel with eco-friendly suggestions and carbon offset options. WTD prioritizes user experience, innovates continuously, and ensures data transparency.

This approach not only enhances travel but also promotes responsible tourism and builds user trust in AI integration.

Finally, let's explore the broader impact of AI on the travel industry.

Transforming Travel:

●      Hyper-Personalization: AI will personalize travel experiences beyond imagination. Imagine itineraries tailored not just to destinations but to your mood, preferences, and even real-time data. AI will transform travel from a one-size-fits-all experience to a truly personal journey.

●      Streamlined Booking & Management: Travel booking will become effortless. Imagine AI automating tedious tasks like visa applications, travel insurance, and even managing itinerary changes with ease.

●      Accessibility & Inclusivity: AI can break down language barriers and assist travelers with disabilities. Imagine real-time translation tools and AI-powered accessibility recommendations, making travel a more inclusive experience for everyone.

However, AI also comes with challenges:

●      Ethical Considerations: Transparency and data privacy are crucial. AI algorithms need to be free from bias and ensure responsible data usage.

●      Human Interaction: Travel advisors still have a vital role. AI shouldn't replace the human touch. We envision a future where AI complements human expertise, offering a dynamic and personalized travel experience.

So, there you have it. World Trip Deal (WTD) is shaking things up in the travel industry with a potent blend of AI and affordability.

From personalized itineraries to hidden gem recommendations, WTD is making luxury travel accessible for the budget-conscious adventurer.

But WTD's vision extends beyond booking. They're looking to leverage AI throughout your entire journey, offering real-time recommendations, fostering a travel community, and even promoting sustainable practices.

As AI continues to reshape the travel landscape, WTD is poised to be a leader in this exciting transformation.

So, the next time you're dreaming of an escape, ditch the outdated guidebooks and endless price comparisons.

Head over to World Trip Deal and let AI craft the perfect adventure for you. After all, travel should be an unforgettable experience, not a logistical nightmare. And with WTD, it can be just that.

All of My Friends Have These Trompe l’oeil Sweatpant Jeans

Portrait of Brenley Goertzen

A few months ago, my friend Danielle wore a pair of wide-leg jeans to a fundraiser we attended with our significant others. I immediately noticed the pants — I loved the wash and drape — but as I looked more closely, I realized that her jeans weren’t actually jeans at all.

The pockets, belt loops, seams, and rivets were all meticulously printed onto a material that was smooth, almost like a pair of sweatpants. Even the wash — medium with faded thighs — was printed on. It was like a trompe l’oeil painting …. except they were jeans. Or not jeans , since they were technically sweats. The illusion was starting to make my head spin when Danielle told me the pants were from Rag & Bone’s Miramar collection — a line that is made to look like denim but is cut from a cotton-terry that feels as soft as a pair of leggings. It turned out that Danielle owns six other Miramar styles too, including joggers in three different washes, the same wide-legs but in a lighter wash, plus two Sofie wide-legs (which have real buttons). As we were talking about the pants, another friend overheard our conversation and told us that she’d just placed an order for the same ones.

Rag & Bone Miramar Wide-Leg Trompe L'oeil Cotton Pant

Within a matter of days, my FYP page exploded with more stylish people — one being L.A.-based content creator Sydney Silverman — wearing the so-called “sweatpant jeans” (and as I scrolled, I also saw them here , here , and here again). They genuinely looked like other sturdy (and pricey) pairs of full-length denim. Across the board, the people who were posting said they wore the pants in more professional settings, like their offices , which, I thought, implied that the jean print was as believable in person as it appeared on my phone.

@sydneysilverman_ Jean sweatpant is the life hack ♬ original sound - Sydney Silverman

I’m fully remote and struggle to wear anything other than athleisure most days, so I knew I had to try the Miramar pants for myself. I ordered them, and when they arrived, I was immediately impressed with the fabric: It is soft, lightweight, moves fluidly, and never clings to my body. It is basically the ideal silhouette I look for in a pair of slouchy jeans but that’s practically impossible to find in a denim pair. The wide leg makes them versatile and easy to pair with sneakers or dressier footwear like kitten heels or ankle boots, and the comfort level is unparalleled. I’ve worn them out to dinner, for Zoom calls at home, and to run errands around my neighborhood — I truly never want to take them off — and the friends who’ve seen them have been floored by how “real” they look.

I recently wore them on an early-morning flight , and they felt just as comfortable as my favorite worn-in pajama bottoms. They didn’t wrinkle, the ultrastretchy waistband never felt too tight or too loose, and they kept me warm despite a chilly airplane draft. And, it turns out, I’m not the only one who swears by them for flying . I spotted them on fashion influencer Morgan Riddle , who wore hers on a 17-hour flight; meanwhile, my colleague, senior editor Winnie Yang, wore the Miramar pants on a total of four flights this past week.

“They’re so comfortable, but I don’t feel like a total schlub wearing them,” Yang told me. She appreciates that they keep their shape, plus the elastic waistband doesn’t dig in or sag, even after sitting on a cross-country flight. The side pockets might be the only true giveaway that they’re not jeans, but Yang says they’re deep enough to hold her phone, a crucial feature for travel. (Yang’s sister and sister-in-law were also impressed with the “verisimilitude of the print and construction,” and said the pants reminded them of the trompe l’oeil denim snowboard pants that Team USA wore at the Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympics.)

I am by no means a jeans hater, but these Miramar pants add to my closet in a way no real pair of jeans could. And after trying them myself, I can understand why my friend has now accumulated seven pairs. Our friends who’ve not yet joined the sisterhood of the faux- denim jeans have told me that the pants are next on their list. I’ll be wearing mine straight into summer — and maybe I’ll even try the sweatpant jeans shorts .

You can still find affordable flights to Europe this summer

Airfare prices to amsterdam, brussels, prague and reykjavik are way down from last year.

Christina Saull and her husband have waited five years to take a 10-day cruise through the Norwegian fjords. The first time they planned the trip, it was postponed for a medical emergency. The second time, there was a family wedding. Now, finally, they were getting ready to go in July.

Only they needed plane tickets.

“It’s interesting to see how expensive fares have been and how they’ve fluctuated,” said Saull, a public relations executive who lives in Alexandria, Va.

The couple watched prices go from as little as $900 round trip to as much as $2,500 for flights from Washington to Edinburgh, Scotland, and back from Copenhagen . They finally settled on premium economy seats for $2,000 each on Delta Air Lines and its partner Air France.

“I don’t think it’s unreasonable for summer Europe travel,” Saull said of what they paid.

Not unreasonable is a good way to describe transatlantic air travel this summer. Even with strong travel demand, tickets are cheaper on average than they were last year.

“Airfare to Europe is less expensive than last year by 10 percent,” said Hayley Berg, the lead economist at flight-booking app Hopper . The average round trip ticket before any extra fees costs $882, according to the data.

The highest fares are in June, July and August, Berg added. Traveling in shoulder months — for example, September and October — could save travelers as much as 30 percent.

Schedule data from aviation analytics firm Cirium Diio shows airlines will offer 8 percent more seats on U.S.-Europe routes from May through September than last year.

Philadelphia is gaining new nonstops to Copenhagen, Naples , and Nice, France, on American Airlines. Phoenix gets its first nonstop to Paris on Air France. Washington, a new flight to Zurich on Swiss International Air Lines. And many other routes additional flights or options on larger planes.

“In the transatlantic, we are looking forward to another strong summer,” said Glen Hauenstein, president of Delta Air Lines, referring to bookings earlier in April. He added the airline sees “healthy demand” for seats to Europe.

Paris has flight deals, but hotels are pricey

The Paris 2024 Summer Olympics are a bump in the finely tuned machine that is summer air travel to Europe. The Games run from July 26 through Aug. 11, and the French capital is expected to host some 15 million visitors during the event and the following Paralympic Games. Last summer, the city saw more than 6.2 million visitors in July and August.

“Paris will be like an Olympic village in July and August,” said Christine Ourmières-Widener, CEO of the French airline French Bee . All those visitors still need a way to get to the city. French Bee , which caters to leisure travelers like those going to the Games, has added flights from Los Angeles, New York and San Francisco to meet the demand.

Flight deals to Paris can still be found. Booking website Expedia recommends travelers buy tickets at least 21 days before their trip and, for international travel, look at departing on a Monday to find the best airfares.

Finding an affordable hotel in Paris during the Games is another matter. Expedia said it has seen a “massive surge” in searches for accommodations there this summer and recommends travelers look at nearby cities for more reasonably priced options.

Consider Nice, Prague and Reykjavik

Finn Vigeland, a transit planner who lives in Washington, was “quite surprised” last month when he found a good deal on flights to Nice, France, in July.

Prices on American Airlines’ new nonstop to Nice from Philadelphia were only $700 to $800 round trip, he said. That was affordable enough to make a trip to France with friends possible, and he booked the flight (with points, not cash).

Average fares to Nice from the United States are down a quarter to $907 compared to last summer, Hopper’s data shows. The city also has the distinction of being one of the few European destinations with lower airfares this summer than in 2019, 11 percent lower to be exact. That drop is, in part, thanks to a plethora of new flights on American, Delta, and United.

Amsterdam, Brussels, Prague , and Reykjavik , Iceland, are other European cities where ticket prices from the United States are down more than 20 percent from last year, according to Hopper.

Airfares are not down double-digits in all markets though. Fares to cities like Berlin and Glasgow, Scotland, are on par with last year.

Traveler after traveler said they felt like they could find reasonably priced plane tickets for trips between the United States and Europe this summer. Those who said they could not often lacked flexibility to adjust their trips to when and where fares are the cheapest.

“I felt like this was doable. It made sense,” Alexander Giess said of his plan to take his 10-year-old daughter on a three-week trip to France this summer.

After a lengthy search, in March the marketing executive paid about $1,000 each for two round-trip tickets to Nice from San Francisco on his preferred airline, Delta.
